Monday 14th October
We are delighted to welcome our new team of young people to The Listing, who join us for the coming months in between their studying commitments, working across various disciplines in the business. As a community business, we take great pride in developing the careers of self-starting young people who are interested in marketing, publishing, design or journalism, and are always keen to hear from other enthusiastic students for future opportunities. You can find out more about The Listing team on our website. This October is jam-packed full of events for all the family, ranging from Halloween festivities to school open days. We shine our spotlight on Cam Sight, dive into the life of Lee Jauncey and ponder the patterns of procrastination. As always, we give recognition to some of the great businesses and charities that bolster our community and look to give back to those who give so much and last but not least, we embrace Black History month and we showcase some exciting upcoming events.

A ‘Mobile Exhibit’ is how younger volunteers at IWM Duxford describe John Kelshall.
While guiding school parties of 250 pupils each day through the permanent Battle of Britain display, John regales them with stories of his childhood growing up during the WWII years in Enfield. Boyhood games included scrumping fruit, collecting shrapnel from machine gun casings for “swapsies”, and old newspapers for recycling to earn a Salvage badge. Reminiscences of Anderson and Morrison shelters, queuing at the butchers for nonrationed rabbit, always carrying his Mickey Mouse gas masks. A question John likes to ask his audience is ‘Who had the first onesie?’ To the childrens astonishment, he claims Sir Winston Churchill often dressed in a Siren suit, establishing the fashion. October will be a busy month for Rotarians. You can read more about our Swimathon elsewhere in this issue, but continuing the physical exercise theme, we’re also looking forward to our walking weekend near Fakenham, where many of us, with partners, will enjoy a healthy weekend meandering around some picturesque parts of Norfolk. Apart from getting our boots muddy, there will also be an opportunity for a BBQ and some silly games. Our Memory Café will again be welcoming people with memory issues and their carers - on 14th October and 11th November we’ll be at the Town Hall (in Room 11) while the Old Barn is being redecorated. www.roystonrotary.com

Royston Rotary Swimathon Dig out those Speedos! It’s Swimathon time! We all know that swimming is a super form of exercise, and something you can enjoy whether you’re seven or seventy. But swimming is also a great way to raise funds for your favourite cause – as Royston’s Rotarians know as they gear up for the club’s annual Swimathon. The event, which the club has been running for more than fifteen years, has raised many tens of thousands of pounds, all of it for good causes. The event, at the Leisure Centre, challenges sponsored teams of up to six swimmers to complete as many lengths of the pool as they can in the space of an hour. It’s a fun evening for everyone, and it generates some serious charitable funds – more than £4,000 last year. Every penny raised goes to charity. Sponsorship money is shared 50:50 between each team’s selected cause and the Rotary’s charitable choice – this year it will be Royston’s Parish Church Refurbishment Fund plus other charitable projects at home and abroad. The evening attracts teams of swimmers from all age groups – Rainbows and Brownies at the young end of the scale, with Rotarians themselves at the senior end! In between, many local churches, schools and charities all recruit teams, all ready to get wet for their pet charitable project.
Howard Peacock’s the man in charge, and he’s hopeful that the event will equal or beat last year’s tally of 12 teams, 60 swimmers,1206 lengths swum, and £4,000 raised. He’s keen to welcome established and new teams of swimmers. “It’s easy and free to enter,” he says, “and everyone always enjoys the challenge of swimming those few extra lengths – it’s not a race, but there’s a definite element of competition, whether against the clock or the previous year’s record. Plus the satisfaction of knowing you’re doing a lot of good in the process.” This year’s Swimathon is set for 6-10pm on Sunday 13th October at Royston Leisure Centre – Entry forms can be download online: www.swimathon@roystonrotary.com, or call Rtn. MUSEUM MUSINGS: 4000 Years Ago In Royston
Bronze is a metal made using tin and copper. People in Eastern Europe started making bronze about 5000 years ago and they shared their knowledge and technology for this as they travelled across Europe and to the UK. As a general guide, this time period is called the (you’ve guessed it) Bronze Age. During the Bronze Age, groups of people started to settle down in one place to farm the land instead of hunting and gathering. As the idea of farming spread, there was less need for people to move great
distances in order to follow their food.
A final resting place on the Heath could have been really important to a lot of people.
How often have you walked along Baldock Road and www.roystonmuseum.org.uk Melbourn Street? This is part of an ancient route called the Icknield Way and it’s highly likely that Bronze Age people walked this route. We’re walking in their footsteps. Take a walk around Therfield Heath and again, you’re following in the footsteps of these people. And the importance of the Heath is realised when you take a closer look at the lumps and bumps. This was used as a burial site and excavations in the 1800s uncovered Bronze Age artefacts. Today, the view from the Heath is amazing and so it most likely was 4000 years ago.

Community Hub Launches Garden House Hospice Care and the Compassionate Neighbours Project have launched a new community hub in Royston following the success of the Stevenage Hub set up last autumn. The Hub is an opportunity for local people to pop in for a cup of tea and a chat, meet some of the Hospice team and find out more about the therapies and support services that are available throughout Garden House Hospice Care. We are looking for new volunteers. Compassionate Neighbours are trained volunteers offering friendship and a listening ear to people in their community who are lonely or socially isolated. They visit them once a week or get involved at one of our social hubs.

Chunky Chocolate and Orange Cookies
Hello my fellow foodies...
And welcome to October’s bright and shiny edition of The Listing. This month I would like to share with you possibly the quickest recipe for chocolate chip cookies ever! These cookies are the soft and slightly “gooey” type style bordering on a brownie like texture... just the thing to go with a cup of tea on a cold, damp, autumnal afternoon, or to share around at Halloween! Chunky Chocolate and Orange Cookies Makes approximately 12 cookies > 150g butter (I like to use the salted variety) > 60g soft brown sugar > 100g granulated white sugar > Seeds scraped from 1/2 a vanilla pod > Finely grated zest of one orange > 1 egg from a happy and healthy free running hen > 220g plain white flour > 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda > 225g orange flavoured chocolate - this time I used milk chocolate but usually I like the richer darker taste of plain chocolate - the higher the cocoa solids percentage the better for me! > Pop the oven on to pre heat at 180° Let’s begin by creaming the butter and both sugars until the mixture looks lighter in colour and takes on a creamier texture. Next stir in the vanilla seeds, orange zest and then gradually add the beaten egg making sure you beat the mixture well to incorporate all the egg between each addition or you may well have a curdled mix to deal with. Next, stir in the sifted flour and bicarbonate of soda and finally stir in the chunks of chocolate. As you can see from the picture I have used large chunks but
it is up to you how large or small your chunks are, some may even prefer the uniformity of chocolate chips, the choice, as always dear reader, is up to you! Now all that remains to do is to spoon the mixture directly onto a greased baking sheet. I used an ice-cream scoop to ensure all my cookies were the same size and I left the mixture in a little “heap” allowing plenty of space between the mounds as they do spread as they cook. Next, pop the trays into the pre heated oven and cook for approximately 10 minutes, but keep an eye on them as they can burn very quickly. Once they are cooked, firm and golden brown in colour, remove from the oven but let them cool for a few minutes before moving them to a cool rack to cool completely. Now all that remains to do is to pop the kettle on, invite a friend over and enjoy a cookie, or two, in good company! Until next time dear reader...

My Local Life lee jauncey Lee Martin Jauncey is founder of LMJ Plumbing, a heating and plumbing business based in Litlington, where he has lived for the past nine years. The Listing caught up with Lee to ask him some questions and find out more about the person behind the business. Tell us about your work. I worked with my father for many years as part of his building and plumbing business, and when he decided to retire I went on my own and formed LMJ Plumbing. What do you love about your work? I enjoy my job as I get to meet people from all walks of life. What’s your favourite local place to eat? When going out to eat we like to visit Yuva as you can always rely on the food being good. We also like to visit country pubs that have a nice garden when the weather is good. What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? At the weekends my favourite pastime is to take our caravan and visit different places in the South East. What are you looking forward to most this month? One good thing about October is that I should be able to put the mower away for the winter as I have spent a lot of my time mowing paddocks for our ponies (although I am not looking forward to the winter mud!) What is your proudest moment? One of my proudest moments was when my granddaughter was born and she’s a joy.
What is your favourite film? My favourite film at the moment is Bohemian Rhapsody as I am a life long fan of Freddie Mercury and Queen and it was good to see how they began. But give me a good Bond movie any day. What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? The most valuable life lesson I have learnt is “Happy wife, easy life!” How do you relax? To unwind at the end of the week I look forward to sitting in my garden with a nice bottle of red wine. What inspirational quote sums you up? I like to think honesty is the best policy.

black history month - roger britten In 1856, the Royston Institute hosted a grand exhibition showcasing novelties and the latest technological advances. A reporter noted that one such novelty was ‘an intelligent looking African... printing off copies of a handbill.’ Roger Britten had been born in the British colony of Demerara (now Guyana) 16 years earlier. His was the first generation born into freedom and, when he was just 5 years old, a non-conformist minister Reverend William Garland Barrett arrived. He believed a Christian education was vital to the advancement of the children of ex-slaves but his mission was cut short when he fell seriously ill. He returned to England in 1848, taking Roger with him as his adopted son.
Soon after Reverend Barret’s death, Roger adopted the middle name Mark. He married Royston girl Fanny Clarke, a white, Anglican 24-year-old dressmaker. Unfortunately, by age 43, Roger was unwell. He had contracted bronchopneumonia and died at his home on 1st June 1883. Unusually, the Royston Crow ran a lengthy obituary. ‘Many will remember the little black boy... who...through his good temper and amiability, won the affections of those around him wherever he went.’
As part of Black History Month find out more about Roger Britten at Royston Museum on 2pm on Saturday 5th October (with special guests, King James Academy Royston’s The family settled in Upper King Street, Boys Choir who will be performing a song Royston, where Barrett took up the pastorship they have written about Roger Britten). of John Street Congregational Chapel. Think Garden, Think Richard
Home & Garden
Materials For A Purpose... Garden Building by Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott This month I want to investigate garden buildings and how to use them in the garden. The garden is a great place of refuge from our busy lives, somewhere to relax in peace and quiet or simply enjoy spending time with friends and family. Garden buildings can be a good way of making space that helps us with this down time. Sheds are an integral part of the garden and on a basic level are storage facilities for the garden stuff we don’t want on show. I have lost count of the number of garden sheds I have seen rammed full of stuff. For a functional shed it is often better to conceal them out of the main sight line. This can be done with climber clad trellis or well positioned larger shrubs. For a serious gardener, the shed is a key component of tending the garden and raising plants; with tools standing to attention and a potting table for raising plants, perhaps close to a green house. The position then needs careful thought to make the most of the growing area in relation to sun light and prevailing wind. Garden offices are a very popular way of increasing useable work space into the garden. It is important to position them well in the design of your outdoor space. The subtle feeling of leaving the family space and journeying to the work space can often be represented by a path from the house up the garden. The transition from one area in a design to the next is a good way to make sense of space especially if the garden is larger. I like to design gardens that reveal themselves so why not have the office space nestled in transparent planting with stimulating views. We all crave an inspiring view to stimulate our brains. Having a relaxing space to work allows for greater productivity. Gyms and games rooms are a good way to exercise and socialise at home in the garden. We recently designed a garden with a pretty cedar clad gym positioned overlooking the garden. The building was anchored into the space with planting and provided a work out space for the whole family. It looked good from the house too, with a path leading through planting. Gardens can look very disjointed if components such as buildings feel like they have been helicoptered in without any thought
for their relationship with the rest of the space. Summerhouses provide a traditional feeling of a space to sit, relax and entertain; perhaps with a veranda and fairy lights. Again, it always comes back to designing space carefully. If the garden building is decorative then it needs to be positioned carefully in the design. Views back from your garden building need to be given a thought too. We often fix on the view from the house but we forget that the views back across the garden are just as important. Playhouses are a great way to engage children with the outdoors and stimulate their imagination. Having somewhere to role-play with friends and having picnics develops their social awareness and interpersonal skills too. Learning through play without the influence of screens is a key component of early years teaching. Just look at the explosion of forest school activities being offered now days. I grew up playing in the garden, climbing trees and role playing in a tree house with my brother and I loved it. Think back to your best childhood memories and see how many of them were outside!

News from the conservators Conservation Work
During September, the Conservators met on the Heath to plan our winter work. Problems with dogs and vandalism at the eastern end of the site has made grazing very difficult. As a result, scrub and saplings are encroaching. Some areas will be cut over the winter - it may appear dramatic at first, but if this work is not done the scrub will encroach on the open grassland and the species for which the site is recognised will slowly be lost.
Footpaths
With autumn comes the likelihood that some paths will become muddy and slippery. Please try and avoid damage and erosion to the site by making use of alternative routes. Height Barriers

Royston Hockey
Hockey was first played on Therfield Heath in 1957 and although Royston Hockey club currently play home games in Cambridge we have moved our clubhouse base to Royston Golf club and continue to thrive with five senior teams. Three Men’s and two Ladies teams play competitive Hockey in the East Leagues. The big plan is still to build or play on a suitable Astroturf surface in Royston. After the huge fright in 2012 when the MOD announced the closure of Bassingbourn Barracks the senior teams have played at St. Edmund’s College near Puckeridge, St. Ernulf School in St. Neots some 19 miles away and, for the last four years, St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge. Maybe there is another Saint out there who can help us build in Royston!
be playing against other clubs at all age groups to keep the momentum going as we continue our focus on youth development. It was only in 2014 after the 2012 Olympic success that as a club we decided to expand and focus on Junior Development yet we still look to recruit new players from both senior and junior levels. We started discussions with parents and helpers to run a separate junior committee and it is now a self financed club within Royston Hockey Club and is a credit to the managing team. We have a great team behind the scenes who work tirelessly to keep us going and moving forward. They know who they are and I thank them, it makes my life easy due to their commitment.
Junior Hockey currently runs on Sundays at the times below: 10-11am - U8s (Year 2/3) and U10 Girls (Year 4/5) With a thriving and growing junior section of 150, 11-12noon - U10 Boys (Year 4/5) and U12s (Year and over 75 adult players coupled with active 6/7) 12noon -1pm - U14s ( Year 8/9) and U16s Vice Presidents and Supporters we have nearly (Year 10/11) 300 members. Looking after you Don’t forget to Breathe… This can seem like a silly statement at first, of course you wouldn’t forget. It’s one of the main components of being alive, right? But really and truly how often do you breathe properly? In yoga classes we really focus on feeling that connection to your inhalations and exhalations, however, you don’t need to be on a yoga mat to enhance your breathing practice. I say practice because at first when you begin to truly feel your breath it can feel awkward and unnatural but controlling your breath patterns can give you unlimiting benefits. Boosting your energy, relieving symptoms or stress, tension and anxiety, enhanced immunity giving us clearer and calmer thinking are all but a few powerful reasons to give this simple task a try. Here are a couple of breathing techniques to help you begin. Box Breathing: Sit comfortably and gently close your eyes. Allow your breath to firstly be natural and once settled begin to draw a box within your mind. As you draw the left side of the box you inhale. To draw the top of the box you hold the breath.
Psst... Model Railway Exhibition Coming SOon
Royston District Model Railway Club will be hosting their 8th exhibition on Saturday 16th November, with 20+ layouts and a selection of demonstrators and trade stands. www.roystondmrc.co.uk
Right side of the box to exhale. And hold at the bottom of the box. This will begin to calm your nervous system and reduce signs of stress. Continue the drawing of the box several times until you are ready to return to natural breathing. Counting Breath: This is simply counting whilst breathing. Begin counting to 4 as you inhale and the count also to 4 as you exhale you can begin to lengthen the count to 5 or 6 as your practice deepens, allowing your full breath to fill your lungs as you inhale and empty all the breath out as your exhale. If you wish to bring in a holding of the breath after the inhale for the same count this will help deepen your practice and improve the benefits. So, the next time you need a little chill or find yourself gritting your teeth, take a few very easy moments to connect to your body and breath. As without it nothing else really matters.

be green, cut carbon! Small and medium sized businesses in North Herts and Cambs are being offered free, independent professional advice, delivered by some of the best energy efficiency consultants in the country, to enhance their green credentials and identify cost and carbon savings this Autumn. The Business Energy Efficiency (BEE) programme is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The reviews will look at your company’s energy usage and the potential cost and carbon savings available from switching to alternative technologies such as LED lighting, heating and insulation, or solar PV, allowing you to make well-informed business decisions. If you wish to undertake any of the recommendations, the team at BEE can help identify potential funding sources.

Professional Which Time Waster Are You? I’ve talked about procrastination before; putting things off until later. It’s one of the deadly sins of time management. Many people don’t realise they do it, so here are 10 different procrastinators – how many do you recognise? 1. The Cleaner: ‘Before I start, I’ll put on some laundry and then I might tidy my desk so I have room to work…’ 2. The List Maker: ‘Right! To work! First things first, write another list..!’ 3. The Napper: ‘Just 5 more minutes… Zzzzz…’ 4. The Sidetracker: ‘I know I need to finish that thing that is due tomorrow, but I’ve just had a great idea for the other thing that is due next month…’ 5. The Sharer: ‘[Posts] “Here’s a picture of me about to start work!” *smiley face*’ 6. The Researcher: ‘I love researching... OMG that video is sooo funny – I wonder if
there are more on YouTube?’ 7. The Snacker: ‘Brain work uses energy too – maybe I should have a snack before I start… And maybe a coffee… Anyone want to come for a coffee with me?’ 8. The Gamer: ‘I’ll start after I take care of some things in my town and, ooh, I wonder if I can get that loot box?’ 9. The Viewer: ‘I’m clearly thinking about that programme I missed last night, so I’ll just watch it now on catch-up and then I’ll start work.’ 10. The Perpetuator: I was going to start 30 minutes ago, but now it’s getting a little late… So best if I start tomorrow when I am more refreshed.’ Do any of those ring a bell with you? If in doubt – just do it! (Is it shameful to admit that I’m sitting here typing this, and so not doing something I don’t want to do?) julian@julianberry.co.uk
