Welcome

December Deadline Tuesday 12th November

This November we’re showcasing everything from firework displays to an 80’s themed disco night. We shine our spotlight on East Anglia’s Children Hospices, dive into the life of Therfield First School Headteacher, Tara McGovern, and of course take a few moments to reflect on the sacrifices made by men and women for Remembrance Sunday. As always, we give recognition to some of the great businesses and charities that bolster our community and look to give back to those who give us so much. Last but not least, we tell you about some of the fantastic upcoming markets, Royston & District Annual Model Railway Exhibition and the newly introduced Royston Book Hunt.

In November we’re also offering children aged 4-10 the opportunity to showcase their talents to the town and thus we present The Listing’s December Cover Competition. For further details on how to enter, turn to page 25.

NEWS FROM OUR CLUBS & SOCIETIES... Royston and the surrounding villages are a hive of activity. We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of clubs and societies within our town and villages, covering a wide range of interests - from arts to sports, adventure to support.

Royston u3A

Since its launch in 2005, The Listing has been proud to support the very many clubs and societies. We maintain and publish a comprehensive list of all the organisations, clubs and societies on our website: www.bit.ly/ClubsDirectory

Dark corridors, metal gates that clank shut and jangling keys - that’s the general impression we get of life behind bars. But former prison officer Pauline Martindale took us behind closed doors and revealed what it was like working in places like Holloway and Wormwood Scrubs. She gave a fascinating insight into her roles over more than 20 years, including managing the psychiatric unit and working with women on remand right through to those serving life sentences. The Buckden Handbell Ringers will be getting us into the Christmas spirit at our monthly meeting on November 26th at 2pm in Royston Town Hall. If you are interested in joining U3A log onto www.u3asites.org.uk/royston or contact Jackie Gellert at jackieroystonu3a@gmail.com or 01763 248097

Positive Movement

Our unique and hugely successful Positive Movement classes are available throughout Hertfordshire. The classes are for: older people, anyone who is frail and/or at risk of falls, those who experience mobility issues or a physical disability, as well as people living with a limiting long-term illness. The programme is effective and fun, with participants reporting that they are less anxious, more confident, can move with greater ease and experience fewer aches and pains as a result. An 81 year old has said “My flexibility has greatly improved – however the best bit for me was watching everybody improve week by week!” Another participant reported “These classes have made a massive difference to my life and health.” Each session, costing £4, consists of an hour of gentle exercise and movement followed by time to socialise over tea and biscuits. For details and to reserve a place telephone 01462 678804 or email positivemovement@letchworthcentre.org

Our first meeting of the new season was, Archaeological Excavation at Wimpole, by Paddy Lambert. Paddy was an archaeologist on the dig at Wimpole which was done in advance of a new car park being constructed. Our packed audience were keen to hear about the Roman finds and was not disappointed. Paddy’s enthusiasm was infectious and before long he held the audience in his hand as he told of the wealth of finds, including Roman coins, manicure implements, a spearhead, jewellery and the most exciting was a 5 cm figurine thought to represent Cernunnos the Celtic God of fertility. This is now at the British Museum for cleaning.

Our next meeting will be on November 7th at 8pm, on the subject of “The Seven Deadly Sins (and a few lively virtues) admission is £2, everyone welcome. Meetings are held in The Heritage Hall, Town Hall on the first Thursday of the month.

WI PM

Ladies, if you are looking for an enjoyable way to spend the second Thursday afternoon of the month, plus the opportunity to make new friends, consider checking out our sociable group. We normally meet in Fellowship Hall (next to the Picture Palace) from around 1.45pm but our December meeting will be held at the Heath cafe. Visitors are most welcome so please come along and join us for some pre-Christmas fun and get to meet some other members over a cuppa in a friendly atmosphere. Our various interests include ukulele, discussing books, walking our local footpaths, having lunch together, working on crafts, visiting places of interest and theatre trips. We have plenty of diverse and interesting talks arranged for future meetings plus a variety of things planned to keep us occupied over the Winter months; please come and enjoy them with us. For more information please contact: Eunice: 01763 231658 or Jean: 01763 245958

At Royston & District Mencap we welcome all disabilities and ages and membership is £15.00 per year; giving you access to outings and events more locally throughout the year. If you’re interested, why not attend our AGM on Monday 9th December 2019 at the Heath Social Club from 7pm where you can meet other members and speak to Committee members about any concerns you may have. This will also be a bit of a festive occasion – complete with photo booth - leading up to Christmas. It is also the time when membership will be renewed for 2020. We have had a number of successful outings and events this year and are already exploring several possibilities for next year and hope to come up with something different to that we have done previously. For more information on what we do and our memberships, please call Linda on 07767 847796, Kyra 07780 843296 or visit www.roystonmencap.co.uk

Roysia Women’s club

In October we had two great speakers:

Debbie Brady gave an illustrated talk on what life was like as ‘A Female in Fleet Street’. She had been a journalist working for the national press and covered some of the biggest stories of the late 80’s and 90’s. The following week Johnathan Fryer amused us by reflecting on ‘The Humorous Side of being an Actor’ and had been involved with many of the famous TV comedy programs shown during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. We also had a social at the start of October and ended the month with a fund raising auction in aid of Royston Parish Church where Members picked up some wonderful bargains! We are a thriving club enjoying speaker meetings, fund raising events, socials and day trips. New members are always welcome and we meet in the Town Hall on Monday evenings from 8-9.45pm. Poppy Appeal Volunteers Needed

Megson

To keep the Poppy Appeal going in Royston we are in desperate need of volunteers to help organise the appeal and help with manning the supermarkets.

Pupils and staff at Icknield Walk First School were lucky enough to have a visit from Megson. Megson are a local Folk duo and have been nominated four times for the BBC Radio Two Folk Award.

We usually work on a rota basis and do 2 hour time slots to help cover them everyday over the appeal. From Monday 28th October until the 11th November. If anyone would like to help out or learn more about what we do, please get in touch. Call: 01763 220981 Email: roystonpoppyteam@gmail.com Facebook: Royston Poppy Appeal

Out & About... Remembrance Sunday Remembrance Sunday 2019 will fall on Sunday 10th of November with Armistice day following on Monday 11th November. This year marks several anniversary’s relating to the Second World War including 80 years since the Second World War began, 75 years since the D-Day Landings, the battles of Arnhem, Monty Casino, Kohima and Imphal In Royston, as across the Nation we will come together to remember and honour the sacrifice of all those of our Armed and Civilian forces who in two World Wars and later conflicts, have given their lives in defence of our freedom. During the Second World War the areas surrounding Royston were home to many service personnel from many different Nations; for example RAF Bassingbourn would become station 121 of the 8th United States Army Air Force and would be home between October 1942 and June of 1945 to the 91st Bombardment Group Heavy. By the wars end this Bomb Group would have suffered the highest casualty rate of any group in the 8th USAAF with 920 airmen killed, 123 missing in action and 959 captured; we will remember the sacrifice made by all our allies in securing our freedom.

We should also remember all those veterans and families still living, whose lives have been forever changed through their service; for many, every day is remembrance day.

The Orangutan Who Sang

This month we’ve reviewed a new children’s book, The Orangutan Who Sang, written by Jay Vincent. The first part of a multipart series aimed at 3-8-year olds, Jay explores difficult themes such as shyness, bullying and friendship allowing parents to engage with their young ones in a way they perhaps haven’t before. Avid singer Olly is a shy but funky Orangutan who struggles to express his talents when his nerves stop him from getting any words out. After an embarrassing fall from a tree, Olly leaves his

Tannery Drift First School It has been a great start to the new school year at Tannery Drift First School and our Early Years classes have settled brilliantly into their new environments and have been exploring the opportunities available to them through play. Many of our activities offer a hands-on and practical approach so children can learn new skills and develop these independently. By allowing them to be creative and explore a variety of media and materials our children are able to be imaginative and test out their own ideas through mark making, painting, modelling and designing. Spotlight On... East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices Could you Help at Home? East Anglian families need you!

EACH thrives on the generous support of our volunteers across all areas of the charity. This Autumn, we’re recruiting enthusiastic volunteers for our Help at Home programme. The families who receive support from EACH would often also benefit from practical support at home. For them, spending time together and making the most of every moment is more important than getting the ironing done or painting the garden fence. And that’s where you come in. The families need volunteers ready to step into their homes and gardens and relieve some of the burden by taking on these household tasks!

Here East Anglia’s Children’s Hopsices care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk, and Suffolk as well as supporting their families. We offer families flexibility and control over where they receive their care and support, including where their child dies - at home, in hospital or at one of three hospices at Milton (Cambridge), Quidenham (Norfolk) and The Treehouse (Ipswich). We’re recognised as world leaders in our field, with a reputation for excellence and commitment to pioneering development and innovation.

reach more families who need simple practical support to make their day-to-day lives that little bit easier.” The only thing you need to get involved is time to give! You can get more information by contacting Charlotte at charlotte.redmond@each.org. uk or on 07889 251385. There are plenty of volunteering opportunities at EACH. You can visit the website www.each.org.uk to find out how you can support us.

The Help at Home programme at EACH is such a valuable part of the support service we offer. Charlotte Redmond, EACH Volunteer Coordinator, says: “I only started working at EACH a couple of months ago and already I’m seeing what an amazing effect the Help at Home programme can have on the lives of families. Royston Book Hunt by Kip McGrath Over the last two weeks, Kip McGrath has hidden over 50 books around Royston in the hope that children will hunt them, read them and re-hide them for someone else to read.

Having been successful in other towns, the idea of the book hunt is to encourage children to get out and get reading, earning it support from both teachers and parents. The idea is that any finds are shared on the Facebook group Royston Book Hunt and clues are left as to where they have been re-hidden. The plan is to hide more books over the coming weeks and hope to get lots more children and parents involved. For more information, search Royston Book Hunt on Facebook or call Lisa on 07515 350919

My Local Life Tara McGovern - Therfield School Headteacher Tara McGovern started at Therfield First School based in Therfield, as Headteacher in September 2015. This month The Listing caught up with Tara to find out more about the person behind the headmistress. What’s your name? Tara McGovern Where do you live? I live in Stevenage but am the Head of Therfield First School and practically live there! What do you love about your work? Being able to make a positive impact on the lives of young children. To give them the confidence and self esteem to embrace all that school and life has to offer them. The school’s motto of Bringing Learning to Life sums up all that I love about being the Head of a school. What is the most challenging aspect of your position? The amount of paperwork and scrutiny that comes with running a school. What’s your favourite local place to eat? The Fox and Duck pub in Therfield. It’s the hub of our local community and the food is always scrummy. What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? When I am not working, I like to go shopping and eat nice food. But my favourite thing of all is to relax with my dog Bruno! What are you looking forward to most this month? On the 28th November we have the whole school Decorations Day where we make all the decorations to turn the school into a winter

wonderland. We have lots of parents helping us with this and the day has a really jolly vibe. What is your proudest moment? Becoming a mum and becoming Head of Therfield First School. What is your favourite film? Les Misérables – although my most favourite thing is to watch it at the theatre. What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? That not everything comes easy. Hard work and perseverance pays off. You get back what you put in! How do you relax? Watching TV with my very big dog Bruno.

What inspirational quote sums you up? If at first you don’t succeed – try, try and try again. This totally encompasses the growth mindset ethos of staff and pupils at Therfield First School. Therfield First School. The Causeway, Therfield, SG8 9PP 01763 287284 www.therfield.herts.sch.uk

News from the conservators

Friends of Therfield Heath

A big thank you goes to the team from AstraZeneca who came on Friday October 4th to help clear up the entrance to the Heath; removing ivy and painting the entrance sign. Some of the Conservators got their hands dirty too, clearing out a couple of the drainage ditches in the car park.

We are privileged to live close to a beautiful natural resource, Therfield Heath, with rarities such as the Pasque flower and the Chalkhill Blue butterfly.

popular Easter Egg hunt and erected 30 bird and bat boxes. Everyone is welcome to join events and members enjoy discounts.

The chances are that you have enjoyed this wonderful Heath by eating at the Heath Café, playing sport, wildlife spotting, attending an event such as the Kite Festival or simply by running or walking on it. Are you aware that there is no public funding for the Heath? The Conservators look after the Heath but need more finance and resource to keep it at its best. The Friends of Therfield Heath, which is independent of the Conservators, was formed with the objective to support them as best we can both financially and also by undertaking various tasks, such as the recent litter picking day. But we also want to help you enjoy the Heath as much as possible, so we aim to provide enjoyable and informative events for your benefit.

Membership fees are set low so that all are able to join, the minimum being £12/year for individuals, £16 for a family, but voluntary extra donations are very welcome.

Now some frustrating news: Two motor-cyclists drove onto the Heath and tore up three of the greens. The Golf Club has offered a reward for any information that might lead to a prosecution.

open grassland areas is the Mistle Thrush. They are larger than the others and paler in colour. They have a rattling call in flight. With November comes Bonfire Night and we respectfully ask that no fires are lit nor fireworks or sparklers let loose on Therfield Heath as there is a fire risk and the ash causes damage to the ground and it is against the Bye Laws. If you are interested in volunteering on Therfield Heath, please contact Cynthia. c.combe@therfieldheath.org.uk www.therfieldheath.org.uk

We started a campaign to buy three tree poppers and are pleased to thank the Friends of Enquiries maybe directed to Therfield Heath & The Rotary Club clerk@therfieldheath.org.uk for pledging to help us achieve our target. As we move into the winter months, look out for Stonechats on the Heath, Golden Plovers above or nearby and if you are lucky, perhaps a Short-eared Owl. Easy to spot and hear will be the flocks of Redwings and Fieldfares calling from the marginal trees and feeding on the open grassland. Another thrush that will usually be seen in small flocks feeding in the

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Traditional Parkin

Hello my fellow foodies...

To begin, pour the oats, flour, and spices into a large heat proof bowl and stir together. and welcome to November’s edition of The Listing. Meanwhile, in a heavy bottomed This month I would like to share with you a traditional recipe for sauce pan, add the brown sugar, Parkin. Traditionally made of the first Sunday of November and black treacle, golden syrup, enjoyed mainly through the winter months - such is the warming butter and lard and heat gently effect of the fiery ginger! There is one thing to note before you until the butter and lard are embark on a Parkin baking adventure; the cake, once made, melted, the sugar has dissolved benefits greatly from being left for five days to develop in texture and all ingredients are combined together but take care NOT to and flavour, so please remember to allow for the extra days let the mixture boil. Now leave this to cool for five minutes. when making it! One note of interest, this is the traditional recipe Next pour the liquid mixture onto the dried ingredients and stir for Yorkshire Parkin. Lancashire Parkin is all Golden syrup and consequently is lighter in colour and sweeter in flavour... Which well to insure there are no pockets of flour remaining. Now stir in your crystallised ginger, the beaten egg and the milk until is best? That is yours to decide! you have a liquid sticky mixture. Pour into the lined baking tin You will need 1 x 20cm square deep-sided tin, lined with and pop into the oven for around an hour. Because of the dark greased baking parchment colour of this cake you will need to be careful not to over cook it. A cocktail stick or skewer will be clean when inserted into a Parkin cooked cake and the top will be springy to the touch - although firmer than a traditional sponge. When you are happy the cake 220g oats, blitzed in blender to a medium course consistency is cooked, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool in the 100g self raising flour tin. Once cool, turn the cake upside down, remove the baking 2 tsp ground ginger parchment and cut into portions then turn the correct way up 1tsp mixed spice and leave in an airtight tin for five days to allow the flavours to 1/2 tsp ground mace mature and the ‘stickiness’ to develop. This cake is best enjoyed 200g black treacle around a roaring bonfire with good friends but stay safe dear 60g golden syrup readers, and always practice good bonfire etiquette. Remember 130g brown sugar to check for nesting hedgehogs before you light up! 100g butter 25g lard Until next time dear reader.. 50g finely diced crystallised Ginger 1 egg from happy and free running hens 2 tbsp milk .

Royston & District Model Railway Annual Exhibition Our 2019 exhibition will again be held at the excellent venue of Bassingbourn Village College, on Saturday 16th November from 10am-4pm. As with previous years we will provide a free hourly heritage bus service from Royston Bus and Train stations. This year will be the 33rd exhibition we have organised and are keeping our fingers crossed for the sun to again shine on us all day. 25+ layouts of different scales, 7 demonstrations, 5 Railway societies and 14 Traders offering new & second hand items have been invited from East Anglia, the Midlands, London area, Kent, Berkshire and Gloucestershire. Our local Royston & District Model Engineers will again be running a steam/diesel ride-on service and other surprises (subject to weather conditions). We have a wide variety of model layout sizes and scales attending, including the very popular ‘OO’, ‘N’, OO9, HO (American & continental gauge trains) and ‘O’ gauge, with some layouts featuring DCC control and sound. I am pleased to have obtained a new layout ‘NON SUCH’ created by the ‘WENDSLEYDALE’ team with its Tudor Mice. It explores

3 Baldock Street Royston, SG8 5SY

the question, ‘What if the Tudors invented railways? Several layouts have appeared in Railway Modelling press articles. Aimed to give children (Parents too) the opportunity to drive trains, ‘THOMAS in ‘G’ plus friends’ will be attending. Many other exhibitors welcome careful drivers, including children, to have a try on their layouts and answer questions about how they built them. Please just ask them. A good selection of food and drinks will be available to purchase all day. Children go in for free with paying adults (£5 per adult) as we believe it is very important to encourage the young to take an interest in modelling as a hobby. Perhaps they have watched the Great Model Railway challenge program on TV? Saturday 16th November, 10am-4pm, Bassingbourn Village College, SG8 5NJ. More information can be found on our web site www.roystondmrc. co.uk, leaflets obtainable at the Museum, Royston Library or Posters around town. A bus timetable on the day will be at the Bus & Railway Stations.

Markets in November

Orwell Pannier Market

Behind bars Did you know that Royston used to have two police stations? Until 1896, half of Royston was in Cambridgeshire - north of the old county boundary which ran along the route of Icknield Way through the town centre along Baldock Road to Newmarket Road and beyond. When modern police forces were introduced in the 19th century, Royston needed two police stations – one for Cambridgeshire, the other for Hertfordshire. The Cambridgeshire Police Station in Kneesworth Street became a private house after the 1896 boundary change. The Hertfordshire Police Station (and Magistrates’ Court) on the corner of Market Hill and Priory Lane was built in 1883 and was used by the police until 1991 when they relocated to the new police station in Melbourn Street. That ‘new’ police station remains in use but, since August 2013, it has been closed to the public. Interested to know what went on behind its closed doors –

Saffron Screen Take Over royston Picture Palace Uttlesford’s popular community cinema will work with the excellent and highly proficient team of volunteers at Royston, who will continue to deliver a varied programme of films supported by the management team at Saffron Screen.

A spokesman for Royston First said: “We see moving to management by Saffron Screen, over the next few months, as key to our strategy of re-introducing and maintaining a cinema in Royston. Moving management of the Picture Palace to an experienced, not-for-profit film management company staffed by film professionals and enthusiasts is clearly a step in the right direction. With this agreement we are hoping to secure the future of Royston’s cinema for many years to come. Over the past 6 years, the Royston Picture Palace has established itself as a vital resource for Royston, encouraging in visitors from the outlying villages as well as the town itself who are looking for a great evening’s entertainment”. www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk

Knitted Stocking Appeal

Yasmeen Farooqui at Melbourn Hub

Do you know someone who is a whizz with wool and nifty with knitting needles? Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is on a mission to spread the festive cheer and needs your help!

After spending many years creating title animations and graphics for a wide range of programmes for the BBC, and other television companies, Yasmeen ventured into illustration, printmaking and painting. Yasmeen found the botanical forms and landscapes that she was surrounded by, here in Cambridgeshire, very beautiful and arresting and tried to capture this through use of traditional forms of printmaking and collage. But now she’s beginning to use the experience she gained from producing artwork digitally for use in television programmes, and is transferring it to her personal work. She has started using computer manipulation in conjunction with traditional techniques to produce images which are turned into giclee prints. These are limited editions, printed on to archival quality paper with light-fast inks, that somehow manage to give the images a three dimensional quality. The files are destroyed after the allocated numbers are produced. It’s quite a radical departure from the norm, but she hopes the results are visually exciting.

The Hospice is asking the local community to make as many little knitted stockings as possible. And if you’re not a dab hand at knitting, you can still help - because they also need small ’fun size’ chocolate bars to pop inside the stockings. The stockings and chocolate bars will then be sold together as little festive treats across the Christmas period, raising funds for the Charity! If you would like to help, you can either drop knitted stockings or chocolates to the reception team at the Shelford Bottom based Hospice or get in touch with the community fundraising team by calling 01223 675888 or email: fundraising@arhc.org.uk

“Painting with Pixels” will run 1st-27th November at Melbourn Hub, SG8 6DZ

The service has been run completely by a dedicated team of volunteers, and the foodbank has been able to help many local families who have found themselves in difficulty. Being a fairly small foodbank in an amazingly generous community has meant that it has been possible to take time to help with more than just food needs.”

None of us likes to lose, but I’m going to suggest that to set yourself the personal goal of winning every time is counter-productive and an irrational way of thinking. I say this is because the chance of you winning is affected by lots of external factors; many of them outside your control – not least, the performance of your colleagues. In a football team, the coach gives everyone a different role and each player needs to try and carry out that role perfectly. For example, the defender’s goal is not to score the winning goal, instead they should focus on tackle rate, or successful tackles, or accuracy of long balls up to the forwards. All these things are much more in their direct control

The players trust the coach to choose the right strategy, and know that if they focus on delivering their part, the team should do well. As the boss of a business, you are the coach, so you need to set the ‘goals’ because you can’t manage what you don’t measure. You need to know what the business needs, and how to measure it (key performance indicators) as well as what each of your team players needs to focus on. It’s up to you to write the strategy and give the staff their targets. Setting the wrong ones can be counterproductive (and have cost many a football manager their job), but set the right ones and you should have happy motivated staff who can, in turn, deliver team glory. julian@julianberry.co.uk
