Welcome
December Booking Deadline
This November we’re showcasing everything from firework displays to an 80’s themed disco night. We shine our spotlight on East Anglia’s Children Tuesday 12th November Hospices, dive into the life of Therfield First School Headteacher, Tara McGovern, and of course take a few moments to reflect on the sacrifices made by men and women for Remembrance Sunday. As always, we give recognition to some of the great businesses and charities that bolster our community and look to give back to those who give us so much. Last but not least, we tell you about some of the fantastic upcoming markets, Royston & District Annual Model Railway Exhibition and the newly introduced Royston Book Hunt. In November we’re also offering children aged 4-10 the opportunity to showcase their talents to the town and thus we present The Listing’s December Cover Competition. For further details on how to enter, turn to page 25. We’re grateful for the continued support from our readers, contributors and the community as a whole. The deadline for submissions for our Christmas magazines is 12th November.

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices Could you Help at Home? East Anglian families need you!
Here East Anglia’s Children’s Hopsices care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk, and Suffolk as well as supporting their families. We offer families flexibility and control over where they receive their care and support, including where their child dies - at home, in hospital or at one of three hospices at Milton (Cambridge), Quidenham (Norfolk) and The Treehouse (Ipswich). We’re recognised as world leaders in our field, with a reputation for excellence and commitment to pioneering development and innovation. For funding, we rely on voluntary donations and income from our shops - as well as the championing support from our royal patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge and similarly we rely on volunteers to help improve the lives of those we wish to help.
Charlotte Redmond, EACH Volunteer Coordinator, says: “I only started working at EACH a couple of months ago and already I’m seeing what an amazing effect the Help at Home programme can have on the lives of families. I’ve no doubt we should be expanding the programme to reach more families who need simple practical support to make their day-today lives that little bit easier.” The only thing you need to get involved is time to give! You can get more information by contacting Charlotte at 07889 251385 or email charlotte.redmond@each.org.uk There are plenty of volunteering opportunities at EACH. You can visit the website www.each.org.uk to find out how you can support us. For more information about EACH, including forthcoming events and how you can help raise funds, visit www.each.org.uk or call the Cambridgeshire fundraising office on 01223 204916
EACH thrives on the generous support of our volunteers across all areas of the charity. This Autumn, we’re recruiting enthusiastic volunteers for our Help at Home programme. The families who receive support from EACH would often also benefit from practical support at home. For them, spending time together and making the most of every moment is more important than getting the ironing done or painting the garden fence. And that’s where you come in. The families need volunteers ready to step into their homes and gardens and relieve some of the burden by taking on these household tasks! The Help at Home programme at EACH is such a valuable part of the support service we offer. www.thelistingmagazine.co.uk | 01763 248447 1911 The Listing Villages.indd 7

NEWS FROM OUR CLUBS & SOCIETIES... Since its launch in 2005, The Listing has been proud to support the very many clubs and societies. We maintain and publish a comprehensive list of all the organisations, clubs and societies on our website: www.bit.ly/ClubsDirectory
Positive Movement
Our unique and hugely successful Positive Movement classes are available throughout Hertfordshire. The classes are for: older people, anyone who is frail and/or at risk of falls, those who experience mobility issues or a physical disability, as well as people living with a limiting long-term illness. The programme is effective and fun, with participants reporting that they are less anxious, more confident, can move with greater ease and experience fewer aches and pains as a result. An 81 year old has said “My flexibility has greatly improved – however the best bit for me was watching everybody improve week by week!” Another participant reported “These classes have made a massive difference to my life and health.” Each session, costing £4, consists of an hour of gentle exercise and movement followed by time to socialise over tea and biscuits. For details and to reserve a place telephone 01462 678804 or email positivemovement@letchworthcentre.org

spotting picnic, an extremely popular Easter Egg hunt and erected 30 bird and bat boxes. Everyone is welcome to join events and members enjoy discounts.
The chances are that you have enjoyed this wonderful Heath by eating at the Heath Café, playing sport, wildlife spotting, attending an event such as the Kite Festival or simply by running or walking on it. Are you aware that there is no public funding for the Heath? The Conservators look after the Heath but need more finance and resource to keep it at its best. The Friends of Therfield Heath, which is independent of the Conservators, was formed with the objective to support them as best we can both financially and also by undertaking various tasks, such as the recent litter picking day. But we also want to help you enjoy the Heath as much as possible, so we aim to provide enjoyable and informative events for your benefit.
Membership fees are set low so that all are able to join, the minimum being £12/year for individuals, £16 for a family, but voluntary extra donations are very welcome. If everyone in Royston and local villages joined then the Heath’s future would be secured, so please do join us via our website www.friendsoftherfieldheath.org.uk
We have already successfully organised a photography course, guided walks, a cloud

Remembrance Sunday Remembrance Sunday 2019 will fall on
Sunday 10th of November with Armistice day following on Monday 11th November. This year marks several anniversary’s relating to the Second World War including 80 years since the Second World War began, 75 years since the D-Day Landings, the battles of Arnhem, Monty Casino, Kohima and Imphal In Royston, as across the Nation we will come together to remember and honour the sacrifice of all those of our Armed and Civilian forces who in two World Wars and later conflicts, have given their lives in defence of our freedom. During the Second World War the areas surrounding Royston were home to many service personnel from many different Nations; for example RAF Bassingbourn would become station 121 of the 8th United States Army Air Force and would be home between October 1942 and June of 1945 to the 91st Bombardment Group Heavy. By the wars end this Bomb Group would have suffered the highest casualty rate of any group in the 8th USAAF with 920 airmen killed, 123 missing in action and 959 captured; we will remember the sacrifice made by all our allies in securing our freedom.
Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service Sunday 10th November Parade forms up in Queens Road, Royston - please arrive no later than 10.00am. The parade steps off at 10.25am and arrives at Melbourn Street War Memorial 10.35am. The service of Remembrance starts 10.45am All are welcome to participate in the parade. Monday 11th November 10.50am at Royston War Memorial, Melbourn Street, followed by a service in the Priory Memorial Gardens at the Memorial to the 91st Bombardment Group (Heavy) USAAF.
We should also remember all those veterans and families still living, whose lives have been forever changed through their service; for many, every day is remembrance day. This year will see the return to the War Memorial of the Memorial Display Panels, honouring all those named on the towns War Memorial, which were displayed for the first time last year in collaboration with the group “What Royston Did”. The panels will be on display from Monday 4th November until Monday 18th November LEST WE FORGET Chris Murphy Chairman Royal British Legion Royston Branch www.thelistingmagazine.co.uk | 01763 248447 1911 The Listing Villages.indd 11

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Traditional Parkin Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to November’s edition of The Listing.
12:00:54
To begin, pour the oats, flour, and spices into a large heat proof bowl and stir together. Meanwhile, in a heavy bottomed saucepan, add the brown sugar, black treacle, golden syrup, butter and lard and heat gently until the butter and lard are melted, the sugar has dissolved and all ingredients are combined together but take care NOT to let the mixture boil. Now leave this to cool for five minutes.
This month I would like to share with you a traditional recipe for Parkin. Traditionally made of the first Sunday of November and enjoyed mainly through the winter months - such is the warming effect of the fiery ginger! There is one thing to note before you embark on a Parkin baking adventure; the cake, once made, benefits greatly from being left for five days to develop in texture and flavour, so please remember to allow for the extra days when making it! One note of interest, this is the traditional recipe for Yorkshire Parkin. Lancashire Parkin is all golden syrup and consequently is lighter in colour Next pour the liquid mixture onto the dried and sweeter in flavour... Which is best? ingredients and stir well to ensure there That is yours to decide! are no pockets of flour remaining. Now You will need 1 x 20cm square deepstir in your crystallised ginger, the beaten sided tin, lined with greased baking egg and the milk until you have a liquid parchment sticky mixture. Pour into the lined baking tin and pop into the oven for around an Parkin hour. Because of the dark colour of this 220g oats, blitzed in blender to a medium cake you will need to be careful not to course consistency over cook it. A cocktail stick or skewer will be clean when inserted into a cooked 100g self raising flour cake and the top will be springy to the 2 tsp ground ginger touch - although firmer than a traditional sponge. When you are happy the cake 1tsp mixed spice is cooked, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool in the tin. Once cool, turn 1/2 tsp ground mace the cake upside down, remove the baking 200g black treacle parchment and cut into portions then turn the correct way up and leave in an airtight 60g golden syrup tin for five days to allow the flavours to 130g brown sugar mature and the ‘stickiness’ to develop. This cake is best enjoyed around a 100g butter roaring bonfire with good friends but stay 25g lard safe dear readers, and always practice good bonfire etiquette. Remember to 50g finely diced crystallised ginger check for nesting hedgehogs before you light up! 1 egg from happy and free running hens 2 tbsp milk
Until next time dear reader...

My Local Life
Leisure
Tara McGovern - Therfield First School Headteacher Tara McGovern started at Therfield First School based in Therfield, as Headteacher in September 2015. This month The Listing caught up with Tara to find out more about the person behind the headmistress.
What’s your name? Tara McGovern
Where do you live?
I live in Stevenage but am the Head of Therfield First School and practically live there!
What do you love about your work?
Being able to make a positive impact on the lives of young children. To give them the confidence and self esteem to embrace all that school and life has to offer them. The school’s motto of Bringing Learning to Life sums up all that I love about being the Head of a school.
What is the most challenging aspect of your position? The amount of paperwork and scrutiny that comes with running a school.
What’s your favourite local place to eat?
The Fox and Duck pub in Therfield. It’s the hub of our local community and the food is always scrummy.
What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday?
When I am not working, I like to go shopping and eat nice food. But my favourite thing of all is to relax with my dog Bruno!
wonderland. We have lots of parents helping us with this and the day has a really jolly vibe.
What is your proudest moment? Becoming a mum and becoming Head of Therfield First School
What is your favourite film?
Les Misérables – although my most favourite thing is to watch it at the theatre.
What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? That not everything comes easy. Hard work and perseverance pays off. You get back what you put in!
How do you relax?
Watching TV with my very big dog Bruno.
What inspirational quote sums you up?
If at first you don’t succeed – try, try and try again. This totalling encompasses the growth mindset ethos of staff and pupils at Therfield First School. Therfield First School. The Causeway, Therfield, SG8 9PP 01763 287284 www.therfield.herts.sch.uk
What are you looking forward to most this month? On the 28th November we have the whole school Decorations Day where we make all the decorations to turn the school into a winter
Royston Book Hunt
Over the last two weeks, Kip McGrath has hidden over 50 books around Royston in the hope that children will hunt them, read them and re-hide them for someone else to read. Having been successful in other towns, the idea of the book hunt is to encourage children to get out and get reading, earning it support from both teachers and parents. The idea is that any finds are shared on the Facebook group Royston Book Hunt and clues are left as to where they have been re-hidden. The plan is to hide more books over the coming weeks and hope to get lots more children and parents involved.
For more information, search Royston Book Hunt on Facebook or call Lisa on 07515 350919

Royston & District Model Railway Exhibition Our 2019 exhibition will again be held at the excellent venue of Bassingbourn Village College, on Saturday 16th November from 10am-4pm. As with previous years we will provide a free hourly heritage bus service from Royston Bus and Train stations.
This year will be the 33rd exhibition we have organised and are keeping our fingers crossed for the sun to again shine on us all day. 25+ layouts of different scales, 7 demonstrations, 5 Railway societies and 14 Traders offering new & second hand items have been invited from East Anglia, the Midlands, London area, Kent, Berkshire and Gloucestershire. Our local Royston & District Model Engineers will again be running a steam/diesel ride-on service and other surprises (subject to weather conditions). We have a wide variety of model layout sizes and scales attending, including the very popular ‘OO’, ‘N’, OO9, HO (American & continental gauge trains) and ‘O’ gauge, with some layouts featuring DCC control and sound. I am pleased to have obtained a new layout ‘NON SUCH’ created by the ‘WENDSLEYDALE’ team with its Tudor Mice. It explores the question, ‘What if the Tudors invented railways?
24
Several layouts have appeared in Railway Modelling press articles.
Aimed to give children (Parents too) the opportunity to drive trains, ‘THOMAS in ‘G’ plus friends’ will be attending. Many other exhibitors welcome careful drivers, including children, to have a try on their layouts and answer questions about how they built them. Please just ask them. A good selection of food and drinks will be available to purchase all day. Children go in for free with paying adults (£5 per adult) as we believe it is very important to encourage the young to take an interest in modelling as a hobby. Perhaps they have watched the Great Model Railway challenge program on TV?
Saturday 16th November, 10am-4pm, Bassingbourn Village College, SG8 5NJ. More information can be found on our web site www.roystondmrc.co.uk, leaflets obtainable at the Museum, Royston Library or Posters around town. A bus timetable on the day will be at the Bus & Railway Stations.

If you cannot move the hutches or aviaries cover them with thick blankets or even an old duvet to help block out the flashes from the fireworks and it will also deaden the sound of the bangs, but do make sure there is enough ventilation.

November is Youth Speaks, when our young schoolchildren are invited to impress us with their presentational skills. They do this by presenting on a topic of their choice to an audience of their fellow pupils, school teachers, parents and Rotarians. This allows them to build on their skills and confidence in public speaking. The memory cafe will run on 11th November but will be in the Town Hall rather than the Barn as the latter is undergoing renovations.

Think Garden, Think Richard
Home & Garden
Materials For A Purpose... Garden Seating by Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott
This month I want to investigate garden seating and how to use it in the garden. The garden is a great place of refuge from our busy lives, somewhere to relax in peace and quiet or simply enjoy spending times with friends and family. Garden seating can be a good way of making us stop and rest for a moment and enjoy our outdoor space.
opportunity to lead you through a space and show where relevant features are. Wider walls can offer the option of sitting both sides and when entertaining the more options for sitting the better. Integrating subtle lighting into the brick work is another way of suggesting that sitting on the top could be an option. In our ever-decreasing outdoor space provision we need to think carefully how to get the most from Tree seats are a good way of making a focal point out of a specimen tree in the garden. They a space. can be full circles around a tree or even half Areas for sitting help provide the space to circles look good too. Often made of wood they spend time, but often they are too small for can range from very ornate, intricate designs to comfortable use. It is important when planning simpler, rustic ones. Digging into the ground you could easily make a fire pit with seating around the outside. We have been drawn to fire for thousands of years and this could provide a great meeting point in the garden for parties in the autumn and winter months.

A statement bench is a classic garden feature. The Lutyens bench is a classic piece of simplicity and form in a bench and looks great as a focal point too, but a feature can take many different forms. The Victorians loved a statement piece and this is why the Lutyens bench is still a thing in larger garden settings. The classic simple park bench is still an invitation to sit and take time out. Think carefully about position of a bench as you want to capture good views back across your garden or out toward the wider landscape beyond your plot. Some of us may have particularly pretty houses that we want to look back at and often views looking back over the garden can be forgotten with the emphasis on looking out from the house into the garden.
GARDEN DESIGN & BUILD
Walls with dual purpose have become very popular in garden design and build. The small garden wall is a standard feature of many modern gardens, but why not cap the top with a piece of stone to provide an invitation to sit. Walling bricks and paving stone offer a good

Looking after you The Benefits of Massage Massage was once considered a luxury but now is looked upon as a vital part of healthy wellbeing. With everyday stresses and strains it is more important than ever to give your body and mind some ease. Massage treatments have such powerful benefits which can help support a stress free healthy life. A massage reduces stress levels in most people and may also help manage or reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. It can relieve pain and stiffness in the body according to Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals and full body massage may release endorphins, which act as a pain reliever. Receiving a full body massage can increase your immune system’s functionality by stimulating the lymphatic
34
system, which assists the immune system to protect the body. And whilst all of these are already amazing benefits the stimulated blood flow benefits the appearance and health of the skin. The massage can also encourage tissue regeneration, which may help reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. With all these benefits and with lots of different options for massage locally it’s the perfect excuse to give yourself some care.

News from the conservators A big thank you goes to the team from AstraZeneca who came on Friday October 4th to help clear up the entrance to the Heath; removing ivy and painting the entrance sign. Some of the Conservators got their hands dirty too, clearing out a couple of the drainage ditches in the car park. Now some frustrating news: Two motor-cyclists drove onto the Heath and tore up three of the greens. The Golf Club has offered a reward for any information that might lead to a prosecution.

Men’s health is in crisis. Men are dying on average six years earlier than women, and for largely preventable causes. It needs to change, and we can make a difference. Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world. challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men. Grow a Mo: The men’s health crisis calls for big minds, and big solutions. But there’s a smaller,

Pics of old Herts Constabulary sign, Kneesworth Street blue plaque, and Lee J in front of Royston Police Station Did you know that Royston used to have two police stations? Until 1896, half of Royston was in Cambridgeshire - north of the old county boundary which ran along the route of Icknield Way through the town centre along Baldock Road to Newmarket Road and beyond. When modern police forces were introduced in the 19th century, Royston needed two police stations – one for Cambridgeshire, the other for Hertfordshire.
That ‘new’ police station remains in use but, since August 2013, it has been closed to the public. Interested to know what went on behind its closed doors – I’d heard all sort of rumours - I got in touch and was pleased to be welcomed inside by Lee Jessup to find out more. You can find out what happens at Royston Police Station by going to www.bit.ly/HiddenRoyston Written by Chris Lee leeinroyston@aol.com
The Cambridgeshire Police Station in Kneesworth Street became a private house after the 1896 boundary change. The Hertfordshire Police Station (and Magistrates’ Court) on the corner of Market Hill and Priory Lane was built in 1883 and was used by the police until 1991 when they relocated to the new police station in Melbourn Street.

Thanksgiving A typically American holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, Thanksgiving originated as a harvest festival and has been celebrated on and off since 1789. Nowadays, Thanksgiving offers American families a chance to come together and celebrate what they are grateful for, generally around a turkey dinner. Despite this, the celebration of the day is still mired in controversy with many considering it a national day of mourning due to its connotations with the mistreatment of Native Americans. Regardless of your political views on the matter, it’s hard to argue that the coming together of families for Thanksgiving is an inherently bad thing. So why not have your own ‘Thanksgiving’ dinner this month?
