Welcome
January Deadline Monday 9th December
We begin by congratulating 7-year old Sofia Snowdon and 6-year old Harley Krypczyk for their winning Christmas cover images for our December magazines. The Listing judges were particularly impressed with Sofia’s colourful Christmas scene and of course, the Royston Crow which tops the Christmas Tree. Harley’s winning creation graces the cover of our sister title, The Listing Villages, and as you can see below is bright, bold and incredibly Christmassy! This is the first time we’ve held our Design a Cover competition and we’ve been overwhelmed with the standard of the entries - well done and thank you to all of our entrants, please do come back again next year.
Travel from Royston

NEWS FROM OUR CLUBS & SOCIETIES... Royston and the surrounding villages are a hive of activity. We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of clubs and societies within our town and villages, covering a wide range of interests - from arts to sports, adventure to support.
Royston u3A Royston U3A’s membership has soared past the 500 mark - making the group a real record breaker. Chairman Jackie Gellert said: “Numbers are growing all the time, we have more than 30 interest groups and it’s impressive that this has been achieved in four and a half years. What makes U3A unique is that the groups are run by members who share their expertise and enthusiasm and I’d like to thank them and all our members for their wholehearted support.” Magician Ian Keable, speaker at a packed October meeting, revealed that Charles Dickens is renowned as a literary genius, but few know he was also an amateur conjurer. Ian recreated some of Dickens’ tricks and mystified us performing the leaping card wonder and pyramid box wonder. There will be no monthly meeting in December and the next meeting will be on January 28th with a talk by Mike Levy on the life of W S Gilbert. Meetings start at 2pm in the Town Hall. If you are interested in joining log onto www.u3asites.org.uk/royston or contact Jackie Gellert at jackieroystonu3a@gmail.com or call 01763 248097
Since its launch in 2005, The Listing has been proud to support the very many clubs and societies. We maintain and publish a comprehensive list of all the organisations, clubs and societies on our website: www.bit.ly/ClubsDirectory
Royston Mencap
Royston & District Mencap welcome all disabilities and ages, membership is £15.00 per annum which gives access to outings and events more locally throughout the year. If you would like to join us in becoming a member, why don’t you and your parent/carer attend our A.G.M on Monday 9th December 2019 at the Heath Social Club from 7pm where you can meet other members and speak to Committee members about any concerns you may have. This will also be a bit of a festive occasion – complete with photo booth - leading up to Christmas. It is also the time when membership will be renewed for 2020 and where new members can formally take out membership. In the meantime, why not have a look at our website to get more of an insight into what we offer. We are at www.roystonmencap.co.uk Should you require any further information about membership you can also contact: : Linda on 07767 847796 or Kyra on 07780 843296
Royston TWG Nick Burr, accompanied by a sighted assistant and guide dog Amber, spoke of the local charity Cam Sight - one of the earliest support groups for people with low vision and blindness. Founded in 1915 by two ladies in Cambridge the charity now helps 1,800/2,000 people each year offering a wide variety of assistance from emotional counselling to encouraging participation in various sports. When not fund raising, giving promotional talks or running Goalball taster sessions Nick, a former chef teaches cooking using assistive and accessible technology. Our first meeting of the new year will be on the subject of The Vikings. For more information on the 2020 programme, please contact Pauline 01763 221314

Our November Lecture was Seven Deadly Sins (and a few Virtues) by Dr. Lynne Boughton, when a packed audience were enthralled by her pictures of carvings and statues from Churches near and far, shown on the screen with stories to accompany them.
Our group meets on the second Thursday of the month and we warmly welcome visitors. We are a group varied in ages and interests, enjoying the friendship, entertainment and education that our membership offers.
The worst is considered Pride. Sin is something that you may do once or twice, but Pride endures. Seven is an important number. As well as there being seven sins, there are also seven virtues, seven corporal words of mercy and seven sacraments. However, we have five senses and Lynne finished by saying: “Keep well 10 and flee from 7. Spend well 5 and come to heaven. Of course, 10 relates to the Ten Commandments. Our next meeting will be on 5th December entitled, “Live Forever! The Mystery and Magic of Egyptian Hieroglyphics.” Held in the Royston Town Hall at 8pm, everyone welcome. For more information, call David Allard on 01763 242677 Royston Town Hall, Royston, SG8 7DA
We had three very entertaining speakers during November. Catherine Walker came to tell us about Hertford Museum which was founded by the Andrews brothers in 1903 to house their huge diverse collection. They later gifted the museum to the town of Hertford. Geoff Hales recalled ‘Letters Home – the Story of Gertrude Bell’ an English writer, traveller, political officer, administrator and archaeologist during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. And Mel Rees made a return visit to amuse us with his ‘Christmas Tale – or Two’, a light hearted look at life with a seasonal flavour.
We normally meet in Fellowship Hall next to the Royston Picture Palace but in December our meeting is a Christmassy get together, and we are holding it at The Heath Café so come along and find out more about us. For more information please contact: Eunice 01763 231658 or Jean 01763 245958
Our two meetings in December will be our social when we draw the raffle for our wonderful Christmas Hampers and our Christmas Lunch at the Heath Sports Club, our festive way to end a lovely year of fun and friendship. For further details of our club contact Wendy Pearce on 01763 231381

Hanukkah
This December, The Listing has taken some time to learn and understand the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, running from 22-30th December. Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev, the month in the lunar Jewish calender that straddles both November and December, and commemerates the rededication in the second century BC where according to legend, Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt.
Audley End House & Gardens, Saffron Walden, CB11 4JF
To mark the festival, a special candle called the shammash is used to light eight other candles - one on each night - which are displayed in front windows to remind others of the story of Hanukkah. Moreover, Hanukkah is a time for giving and receiving presents, reflecting with families and friends and dining on delicious fried treats such as potato pancakes and jam-filled deep fried doughnuts. Hidden Royston Johnson Matthey After Dark Security at the Johnson Matthey site on the Orchard Road Industrial Estate in Royston is like Fort Knox. The comparison is not as ridiculous as it sounds; when I first arrived in Royston more than two decades ago, legend has it there was more gold at Johnson Matthey than in the Bank of England.
So it was that one night in October we (I visited with a photographer) were given a two-hour guided tour around the catalyst manufacturing division, where the now veryvaluable metal palladium 25 years on, the gold has gone plays an important part. Winter Tips For Your Pets
With winter comes considerably colder temperatures and darker evenings, so to keep your pet warm, consider a sweater/coat for them - especially if they are old/ elderly or have short hair. If walking your dog in the dark, fit them with a high-vis vest or LED collar to ensure they do not go astray. For cats, consider a reflective collar that can be easily opened if it gets caught somewhere. Moreover, frosted pavements and salt can be irritable for their paws so check them regularly for any cuts/sores. Finally, antifreeze liquid is generally sweet and thus appeals to pets. Unfortunately, it can be very toxic to them so make sure to wipe up any spills right away. Then, alas, Christmas. Try your best to keep your pet away from the tree as they could ingest pieces of decorations - leading to intestinal obstruction or perforation. Also, keep the festive food in a safe place: raisins, chocolate, grapes and sweets containing xylitol can be extremely toxic to cats and dogs and so if ingested, seek veterinary advice right away. Try to be as precise as you can. The vet will ask you the weight of your pet and the amount and type of toxic food ingested (especially chocolate). If the amount of toxic food is risky, then it’s safe to induce vomiting. For more information, visit www.bit.ly/RoystonVet
The winter solstice on 22nd December marks the day when the North Pole is tilted furthest away from the sun. The term ‘solstice’ derives from the Latin word ‘solstitium’, meaning ‘Sun standing still’. On this day the Sun seems to stand still at the Tropic of Capricorn. For us living in the Northern hemisphere, that means it’s the shortest day of the year, just 7 hours, 49 minutes and 41 seconds long. From then onwards, we’ll be seeing more
daylight every day until the June Solstice; the longest day of the year. The winter solstice has played a significant role in the lives of many civilisations dating back over 5000 years. Famously, Stonehenge is carefully aligned on a sight-line that points to winter solstice sunset and signified the moment when animals would be slaughtered and wine and beer were fermented.

Royston Flower Power
Royston Flower Power was set up by a mum on a mission to bring some happiness to Royston Town. Through word-of-mouth, more of the local creative community have contributed flowers which have been left around the town with positive quotes attached; designed to allow whoever finds them to take them home. Every flower is numbered and so far we have placed 90 within the town centre with plans to expand to local villages. By combining craft and community our aim is to brighten up the neighbourhood one flower at a time. Find out where and when the flower fairies are about by visiting our Facebook page, Royston Flower Power.

Spotlight On... Army Cadet Force
where you will meet cadets from other detachments in your county. You may even get to go on expeditions to amazing places in the UK and sometimes even abroad.
All of the opportunities on offer will help you to develop new skills, build confidence and most importantly, have fun.
Become an Army Cadet and you’ll be spending your spare time taking part in adventurous activities like rock climbing, mountain biking, archery and abseiling. There will also be plenty of chance to play all your favorite sports because the ACF has competitions for both boys and girls at county, regional and national level.
The Army Proficiency Certificate (APC) training syllabus will teach you leadership skills, discipline and give you self-confidence you never thought possible. You will learn a wide range of transferable skills such as: the ability to command tasks; make decisions under pressure; plan and organise tasks and work as an effective team player as well as independently. These skills will equip you for life and add an extra string to your bow at times when competition for college places and employment is fierce.
Royston ACF will be hosting their next Open evening on Wednesday 15th January 2020 6.30 to 9.30pm. Don’t miss out on your chance to join us as spaces are filling up fast.
OK, so you might end up a little wet and muddy, but wouldn’t you rather be having the time of your life with some great new mates, instead of just sitting in front of a TV or computer alone in your room?
Through your cadet training you can also gain valuable qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, BTEC First Diploma in Public Services or Music or the ILM Certificate in Team Leading.
Becoming an Army Cadet has heaps of benefits. The most obvious being that you get to take part in loads of exciting and challenging activities such as fieldcraft, adventure training, first aid, music, sports and shooting, to name but a few.
Joining the Army Cadets will give you access to a wide range of exciting activities. From adventurous training (AT) such as kayaking, mountain biking and abseiling to military-themed activities including shooting, fieldcraft and skill at arms, as well as training in first aid, you’ll get the chance to discover lots of new experiences.
The Army Cadet Force (ACF) has nearly 40,000 cadets in more than 1,600 detachments all over the country and is one of the biggest and best clubs around. When it comes to fun, friendship, action and adventure, it’s hard to find anything that beats the Army Cadets.
When you join as a cadet you will make lots of new friends and get the opportunity to go on annual camp

Snippets From Our Family Tree Research This month’s fabulous photo is of a wedding on Christmas Day 1917.
It is the wedding of my paternal Grandfather and Grandmother and was taken in the back garden of the groom’s father’s house in Paddington, West London. This was the house they were to spend much of their married life, and where their children were born, and indeed where their son Alan (my father) was also to start his married life. It brings home my recommendation that you should always write on the back of photographs (lightly in pencil if possible) to explain who is in the picture.
We can see that some of the men are in military uniform (presumably on leave) but who are they…and are they related to the bride or the groom? There are also six children present, but we have no clear idea of who they are. We have asked the eldest members of our family, with some success, but a simple list would have been so informative and interesting. News from your Town Council – December 2019 Seasons Greetings!
Royston’s Mayor, Cllr Robert Inwood, and Royston Town Council would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Royston residents a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Royston Cinema The Town Council is delighted to have secured the future of Royston Picture Palace by moving the management of the cinema over to Saffron Screen, a ‘not-for-profit’ management company with many years of experience. It was from their successful facility in Saffron Walden that the inspiration for our cinema originally came and it was set up as a joint venture between Royston First BID and the Town Council. We hope that this will enable the cinema to increase the opening hours and to screen more films. Films are shown in a transformed town hall on high-tech digital equipment every Friday and Saturday nights with additional matinees also taking place. The cinema has been very successful and is staffed by a hard working team of volunteers from the local community. The Town Photo: Jo Council would like to thank Geraint Burnell for his hard work in running the cinema over the last six years Royston Cinema and for finalising these negotiations. We would also like to takeTown this opportunity to thank the volunteers, without The Council whom this venture would not have been possible. is delighted to
Honorary Freeman Award for Royston At the full council meeting of Royston Town Council, on Monday 30 September 2019, it was agreed to introduce an Honorary Freeman of Royston award. This is the highest honour that a Town Council can grant and will be awarded to people who have rendered eminent service to Royston. The details of nomination criteria are yet to be decided upon but it was agreed that individuals could be nominated by anyone in the town and that those chosen would be noticeable by their extraordinary achievements. This award is in addition to the Mayors Award, which is awarded annually to worthy volunteers. The recipient of this honorary title will be an Honorary Freeman of Royston for life. They will be invited to be present at the Annual Meeting of the Town Council, civic events and functions and will be entitled to take part in any civic procession with the Town Councillors. A commemorative certificate will be given to the award recipient.

Bus services to Royston Gateway The chair and deputy chair of the General Purposes and Highways committee regularly attend meetings of the North Herts Bus Users Group to keep up to date with services and issues affecting public transport users in North Herts. The group represents the interests of bus and public transport users and liaises with local services. Information about this can be found on nhbug.org.uk. An extended bus service for the number 16 circular route, run by Richmond Coaches, commenced on 11 November, providing a regular service every 45 minutes to M&S and Aldi on the Royston Gateway development. The frequency of this service had to be reduced from the previous 30 minutes schedule to accommodate the extra provision. We understand that this is not ideal but it was the only way, at present, to provide buses to the new supermarkets. For travel information across Hertfordshire go to: intalink.org.uk/timetables.
Royston Town Council Grants The Mayor's Community Trust Fund - Community organisations are invited to apply for funds towards activities which will benefit the local community. This could be help for the setting up of a new project, event, or capital scheme. Applications for grants will open in January 2020, forms can be obtained from the Town Hall office or downloaded from our website, roystontowncouncil.gov.uk. We look forward to again helping our worthy local groups and organisations again in 2020.
Naturally Royston at the Arts Festival The theme of this year’s Royston Arts Festival “Our Planet” could not have been a better fit for Naturally Royston. The team gave away hundreds of daffodil bulbs to brighten up Royston and provide food for local pollinators. Children and adults alike were invited to help build “Buggingham Palace”, a super-deluxe bug home that has since been relocated to Icknield Walk school to provide accommodation for bugs there. This year Naturally Royston teamed up with local author and hedgehog enthusiast Kathryn Newey to provide hedgehog-themed activities for children. The Arts Festival stall also marked the announcement of a new initiative by Naturally Royston. The public were asked to make pledges to give up items of single-use plastic to get them thinking about how we might achieve a Plastic Free Royston. Letchworth has already completed this scheme, which is certified by Surfers Against Sewage, and become officially a “plastic free town”, and other North Herts towns are following suit – we think Royston can achieve this too. If you are interested in getting involved with Plastic Free Royston or any other aspect of Naturally Royston’s activities, please email admin@roystontowncouncil.org.uk or look on the Naturally Royston Twitter (@naturallyroys).
The Leete Charity Trust - The trust provides grants towards further education for students who are under the age of 25 and live in or attend school in Royston. The grants made are not large but would be suitable for help towards purchasing textbooks, travel, etc. It is suggested that as much information is given in the application in order that the Trustees may make a speedy decision. Again, application forms can be obtained from the Town Council office or downloaded from the website. ROYSTON TOWN COUNCILLORS

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Christmas Muffins
Hello my fellow foodies and welcome to this very festive edition of The Listing. This month I would like to share with you a recipe for Christmas Muffins. They have all the flavours of Christmas cake yet take a fraction of the time to make and if I am honest, they seem to be welcomed at the tea table as soon as earliest hints of Autumn are upon us. Perhaps it’s the promise of all that is to look forward to as we move towards winter. Christmas Muffins You will need a deep muffin tray and 12 large size paper muffin cases, pop the oven on to pre-heat at 220°C 200g plain flour * 50g ground almonds * 1tsp baking powder * 1tsp bicarbonate of soda * 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon * Finely grated zest of one orange * 100g caster sugar * 25g pistachios chopped * 50g toasted flaked almonds * 25g sultanas * 50g dried sour cherries * 50g dried cranberries * 50g dried, chopped apricots* 4 tbsp brandy (optional) 2 eggs from happy, healthy free running hens 100g melted butter 125ml full fat natural yoghurt 1/2 tsp almond extract 120g marzipan 2tbsp icing sugar* Your choice of sprinkles
If you are going to use the brandy it should be used to soak the dried fruit overnight. If so, pop all the dried fruit in a bowl and pour over the brandy, cover with a clean tea towel and allow to soak at room temperature over approximately a 24-hour period - stirring occasionally. If you choose not to use the brandy, begin at the next step. Divide the marzipan into 12 equal sized portions, then roll each portion into a ball and put aside for later. Next, into a large bowl combine all the ingredients marked with a ‘*’. In a separate bowl beat the eggs, then mix in the melted butter, yoghurt and almond extract. Quickly add this to the first bowl and mix the ingredients together until they are all incorporated but take care not to over mix. Now half fill 12 deep muffin paper cases with the mixture and into each lightly press one ball of marzipan then top with the remaining muffin mix and pop into the oven at 220° C for five minutes then turn down the temperature to 180° and cook for a further 15 minutes until risen and golden brown. Allow to cool before removing from the tray. When the muffins are completely cold, pop the icing sugar into a cup or small bowl and add water drop by drop and then stir until you have a consistency that will drizzle and hold its shape. At this point you may choose to add flavour to your icing by adding something such as almond or lemon. Then spoon, pour, splatter (whatever is your preferred method) the icing over the muffins and throw on your chosen sprinkles while the icing is still wet as this will help to stick them in place. All that is left to do now is to enjoy the muffins with good company and glass of mulled wine! Until next time dear reader...

Welcome
Since opening their doors some seven months ago, they really are becoming a Royston asset. Market shoppers had their ears blessed with a number or two from a West End musical when Royston Market had the inspired idea of inviting them to perform there on a Saturday after hearing a couple of their very talented singers rehearsing, in addition Limitless will be performing at the Royston Market on the 14th December, don’t miss it!. They then popped up at Royston Picture Palace, with an award winning performance of John Godber’s “Teechers”, which showed for just one night before heading off to the all England Winners Drama Festival Finals, and walking off with three trophies including best
production. Then, lo and behold, Royston Arts Festival has a stage, and who should be performing and delighting the crowd with, among other songs, a preview of their production of “Oliver”? Yes, Limitless. “Royston’s Got Talent”, it certainly has and among the many talents, we saw them there too. It seems they are able to deliver for their students, including adults, opportunities that are genuinely limitless, “Oliver!” all but sold out at Hertford theatre. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Chicken Ballantine £13.50kg
Whole Boned Chicken except drumsticks with sausage meat stuffing, ½ boned duckling, pheasant breast, then trussed to look like an oven ready bird. Cooking is the same as Turkey Ballantine but for only 3-3.5 hours. Best to also cook the day before and carve from cold. You then can use the stock for gravy and fat your roasties. Approx weight 4.5-6kg
Turkey Ballantine £14.95kg
This is a whole boned free range Turkey with only the Drumsticks not boned. We then bone a free range duckling which has a cranberry and orange stuffing inside along with 4 free range pheasant breasts. The pork Sausage meat and the stuffed duck are then placed between the breast crown of the turkey and trussed to still look an oven ready Turkey. These are not small but generally if we start with a 6kg Turkey the finished boned weight is 6.5-7kg This is the smallest we can do. COOKING is recommended the day before in a deep roasting dish at a temp of 150 gas mark 3 covered in tin foil with an added half cup of stock or water. The duck will slowly cook inside the turkey basting from the inside. Cook for approx. 5-6 hours. Then remove Tin Foil for the last 30 minutes and Keep Basting. You will end up with a fantastic stock, which when set you will be able to skim the fat of and use to crisp your roast potatoes the next day. When you have removed the bird from the oven cover in tin foil to rest, place in fridge overnight. The Cold Ballantine with all inside birds and stuffing’s will set and are much easier to carve in complete slices. Once sliced you can reheat in the gravy made from the stock or simply place on plates and cover with cling film and microwave for succulent moist Turkey Approx weight 5.5-7.5kg

Business Profile
Why buy a real over an artificial tree ?
That Christmas authenticity: The tradition of picking your own tree with family can’t be beaten and they provide a wonderful fragrance in the home. For some a real Christmas tree is the only way to go!
no manufacturing process, only growing, and are 100% recyclable. Once Christmas is over rather than ending up in landfill sites they can be mulched for landscaping and gardening, or turned into woodchip.
Environmentally friendly: Taking into consideration greenhouse gas emissions, use of resources, fertilisers, pesticides and human health impacts, studies show that an artificial tree would have to be reused for 20 years to be greener than buying a fresh-cut tree once a year. A Christmas tree field is, relative to other agriculture, a very stable, diverse, sheltering and non-toxic habitat and not being a crop for eating can make use of “recycled” land (eg landfill, brownfield). The Forestry Commission states that real trees use about 10 times fewer materials and five times less energy than artificial trees. Also trees grown a few hundred miles away and not manufactured in a factory thousands of miles away allow for a much smaller associated carbon footprint.
Why a Nordman Fir? The Nordman Fir is the UK’s favourite Christmas tree with its shiny, fragrant, mid green, soft to touch needles that will not fall when taken into a centrally heated house. Thew Nordman has a dense symmetrical habit.
Wildlife habitat: A nine year harvest cycle creates a stable habitat providing a wonderful haven for a wide variety of wildlife, especially birds.

How to best care for your real Christmas tree: When you get the tree home cut an inch off of the bottom of the base (the same as you’d take a bit off the end of cut flowers). Place the tree in a bucket of water for an hour or so while you get the decorations out of the loft, bring in only when you’re ready to decorate the tree. Mount the tree in a water retaining tree stand and place away from direct heat. Keep the stand topped up with water every day.

YArn Bombing To Hit Barley in December Last year, if you were walking or driving around Barley during December you may have been surprised to see that the six post boxes in the village had been yarn bombed with a Christmas theme.
kellyscakekitchen.co.uk/childrens-baking-parties
tAKE tO tHE hILLS tHIS cHRISTMAS Therfield and Kelshall welcome visitors to their Christmas Services; particularly worshipers in Royston who may be missing their lovely church building.
This year the yarn bombers are also going further afield to include the post boxes in Barkway and Great Chishill. The Barley Knitting group who meet on the second and fourth Wednesday evening each month in the Chequers pub in Barley, wanted to use their knitting skills to help others. They have set up a Just giving page to raise funds for a local charity. So if the Yarn bombed post boxes make you smile or even laugh out loud please donate via the Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Knitbarley
St Mary’s Therfield start the festival with a Carol Service of Nine Carols and Readings on 22nd December at 6pm. Our choir is a combined one with Kelshall and will be joining you in singing all your favourites. On Christmas Eve 24th December bring your children to our Christingle service at 4pm at St Faiths Kelshall. A bit of a free for all but always popular with our young families! Finally, our Christmas Day service is Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) with Carols at St Faiths, Kelshall at 10am. St Mary’s Church, Therfield, SG8 9QD

We’ll be having our Christmas dinner, but to get in shape for that, we’re having our monthly walk on the 8th, and we’ll also be out with Santa and his sleigh when he visits Royston closer to the big day! Our Memory Café for people with memory issues and their carers will be on 9th December, when we’ll be back in our usual venue,
the Old Barn in Upper King Street, from 10am-12pm. No need to make an appointment - just turn up and you’ll be made welcome. The first big event of 2020 will be our Quiz on 11th January. You can find more details on our website and navigate to forthcoming Events and follow the quiz link. Royston Rotarians wish you a Merry Christmas!

Following a period of apparent inactivity, arising from the need to determine the soundness of the floor, internal scaffolding has finally been erected throughout the nave and inspections carried out by structural engineers to assess the damage to the roof caused by the fire. As a result a Schedule of Works has been drawn up and tenders sought for the next stage of the restoration works.

Artist Marcus Coates is working with Kettle’s Yard to develop a new work inspired by Royston Cave.
Coates’ project will aim to give this historic space a new civic function for 21st century Royston. Responding to the emerging need for radically different approaches to decision-making in society, Coates will form a new group of local residents to use Royston Cave as a place to approach problem solving in imaginative ways
Look out for question boxes around Royston where you can submit questions for the group to answer, and keep an eye out for a range of exciting upcoming workshops and events. If you are interested in being part of the problem-solving group or if you are part of a local group that has a question that we could help to answer please email Ellen: ellen@kettlesyard.cam.ac.uk.

Looking After you 12 Days of Wellbeing at Christmas 1. Letting Go I’m letting go of the ‘perfect Christmas’ myth. I’m going to work on enjoying the festive season with all its imperfections and chaos. 2. Asking For Help I don’t have to ‘do it all’ this Christmas and then feel overwhelmed and resentful. 3. No More Pleasing I give up on trying to please everyone this Christmas. 4. Body Acceptance Every day I’m working on showing acceptance and gratitude for the body I have. 5. Magic I’m going to pause to embrace the fun and wonder of Christmas. 6. Connection I’ll be proactive and reach out to friends, neighbours, family. 7. Humour I’m working to see the funny side of things. 8. No Dieting I am not depriving myself or
labelling foods as ‘forbidden’ this Christmas. 9. Time Out I’m taking some time out for myself when things get hectic. 10. Drink Awareness I’m choosing how much alcohol I drink, showing awareness for its affects on my mood. 11. Valuing Time I am not feeling pressurised to buy loads of stuff that we don’t need and then worrying about paying for it. I know that spending time with friends and family, whilst creating memories is more important. 12. Happiness I am embracing the Christmas spirit and allowing myself to enjoy this time of year without passing judgment.

Richard’s Monthly Tip
Many exercise fanatics find it difficult to take a break…even when ill. Exercise is a temporary stress on the body and immune system, which may prolong illness. A reasonable guide is its OK to exercise lightly through a head cold, but as soon as you feel anything below the neck, a day or two of rest is doctors orders. A short break won’t affect your performance.

Julian’s Business Tips:
How Well Do You Manage Your Time? In order to be in control of what you achieve, you must manage your time. For many people however, it seems that there’s just never enough time in the day. How many of the following 15 statements resonate with you? 1. The tasks I work on are the ones with the highest priority 2. I find myself completing tasks at the last minute, or asking for extensions 3. I set aside time for planning and scheduling 4. I know how much time I spend on each of the various tasks I do 5. I find myself dealing with interruptions 6. I use goal setting to decide what tasks and activities I should work on 7. I leave contingency time in my schedule to deal with the unexpected 8. I know whether the tasks I am working on are high, medium, or low value 9. When I am given a new assignment, I analyse it for importance and prioritise it accordingly
10. I am stressed about deadlines and commitments 11. Distractions keep me from working on critical tasks 12. I have to take work home in order to get it done 13. I prioritise my ‘To Do’ list 14. I confirm my priorities with my boss 15. Before I take on a task, I check that the results will be worth the time put in We would all love to have an extra couple of hours in every day. Seeing as that is impossible, we need to work smarter on things that have the highest priority, and then creating a schedule that reflects our work and personal priorities. With this in place, we can work in a focused and effective way, and really start achieving those goals, dreams and ambitions we care so much about. Julian@julianberry.co.uk
