Royston Through the Eyes of a Child © Royston Arts Festival, 2008. Compiled from contributions from the children, aged 4 to 9 years old, from the Royston area’s First Schools. Printed with sponsorship from Johnson Matthey plc Designed by Black Pig Edited by The Listing
A word from our sponsors It has been a pleasure to sponsor such an enjoyable and rewarding project. The children’s perspective on the town and the environment in which they live is so refreshing and positive. I would like to thank the Arts Festival Committee for all of their hard work in putting this together. John Gourd, Johnson Matthey plc Black Pig certainly enjoyed being a part of the Royston Through the Eyes of a Child project and we had great fun designing the booklet. As a creative agency we greatly admire the hard work put in by these young people and it was fascinating to get a chance to read all their contributions whilst we were designing it. I do hope the booklet will remain a valuable keepsake for years to come. David Higgins, Managing Director Black Pig Royston Through the Eyes of a Child has been a fabulous project to work on. It has been so heartening to see so many schools, and so many pupils from each school, keen to take part and share with us their enthusiastic views on what they like about Royston. Editing the contributions has been such a difficult process - we would have dearly loved to include every one of the 500 or more contributions we received - and do hope you enjoy reading the selection we have chosen here. The idea for Royston Through the Eyes of a Child was born in January 2008 when plans began for the Royston Arts Festival 2008. Wouldn’t it be lovely to celebrate Royston by asking the children that live and go to school here what it is that they like about the town? And why not publish a selection of those quotations so that we all can share in their enthusiasm? We are so grateful to all the children for their hard work and wonderful contributions. Postive, heartwarming and observant, they give a wonderful insight into a child’s view of growing up in Royston. The Heath, Town Centre, Markets, Houses, Countryside, Shops, Sports, Events, Activities and so much more all receive a mention. We would also like to extend our thanks to the Teachers and Headteachers from the First Schools who so obviously shared their passion and inspiration with their children. We have thoroughly enjoyed compiling Royston Through the Eyes of a Child and hope that you too enjoy sharing the children’s words. Royston so very obviously holds a special place in our children’s hearts, and all of us who live and work in the town should be justly proud of this.
