raised end up within the Charity. The main aim of the Charity is to raise money and awareness for good causes by having a good time and by bringing the local community together to achieve it. There are a number of events coming up in May, including a Ball and The OLD SCHOOL HOSTS THE BOOK CAFE a Family Fun Day - details can be found on the charities website. For the more crafty residents of the village, Mummy Duck Designs offers regular Craft evenings and sewing lessons and the excellent Village College hosts a number of evening classes and workshops throughout the year. The village also hosts it’s very own half marathon - this will take place in July and details can be found on the Fit 4 the Challenge website. History is kept alive and our debt to our armed services is remembered at the Tower Museum which is is housed in the original control tower that dates back to the 1930’s when the airbase was constructed. One of the first museum’s in the country to be housed in an original control tower, the Museum opened in 1974; its aim to educate visitors in the history of this world famous base when the RAF and the USAAF were stationed here. Visit the website for details of opening times.

The 4,000 plus residents of Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth are lucky enough to live in a vibrant village community set in the stunning South Cambridgeshire countryside with a well documented history dating back to before the Norman Conquest. The High Street boasts a bakery, village store, Hatties - a coffee shop & sandwich bar , a hairdressing salon, a garage, a pharmacy and the Hoops pub. In the wider area there is a specialist dress shop, a fine Indo Nepalese restaurant and the recently renovated Belle pub. The village showed its community spirit when the village library was had been closed by Cambridgeshire County Council in 2003. The Old School in the High Street has been home to The Book Cafe since which, with support from the Cambridgeshire Library Service, has between 5,000 and 6,000 books to lend, with the latest popular fiction, a large children’s section, a local history reference section and the ability to order almost any book from the Library Service. It is open three days a week, and is a great meeting place with a Café and two computers providing fast Internet access to the community. The Book Café is staffed and managed by 35 volunteers and now has over 300 people who regularly use its facilities. Details of opening hours (including a Story Time session for young children) can be found on the village website. The community also knows how to have a good time whilst raising money for charities. Bassingbourn Charities was originally founded to raise money to send volunteers to work in orphanages in Belarus. It has subsequently been extended to help clubs, societies and any other worthwhile causes within the local area. These have included the Youth Club, both Football and Cricket Clubs, over sixties, ABF the Soldier’s Charity, Garden House Hospice, and many more. The Charity’s income is raised by staging high quality entertainment events for the local community, with all of the profit’s going back into the Charity fund and then being donated to good causes. All personnel involved in the Charity do it solely on a voluntary basis so that all funds

HUNT FOR HEROES & VILLIANS! Did you know that Royston has its own Heroes & Villains Trail around the town? Creative Royston worked with the Royston & District History Society and Museum to identify local heroes and villains from the Town’s past and present. These characters are depicted on tiles which were designed by artist Liz Beardwell and painted by pupils from Roysia, Meridian and Greneway schools at Glazed Creations. The fantastic artwork is featured on our cover this month. So, why not go on a hunt to find all fifteen of Royston’s Heroes and Villains? You can pick up a leaflet with the map and some of the history about the characters, at the Royston Library, Museum or Town Hall. Or download it from: www.roystonartsfestival.org/heroesandvillains To highlight the trail, Creative Royston has teamed up with the Royston & District Museum to present an activity day with a Heroes & Villains theme*. The event is free so go along to get creative! There will be a themed treasure hunt, craft activities and story-telling by the Yarnsmith of Norwich, who will be telling his tales of the Heroes & Villains from Tudor times at 11am, 12.15pm, 2.30pm and 3.45pm To add to the fun, why not come dressed as your own favourite hero or villain?! *Suitable for all ages, but stories are aimed at children over 5 years. Children under 14 should be accompanied by an adult. No booking required, but arrive early to secure your spot, entry is subject to capacity.
