The Pasque flower, Anemone pulsatilla is one of the most Thursday 11th spectacular of the flowers you will April find on the Heath. Around Eastertime the best surviving concentration of this plant in Britain can be seen flowering on Church Hill, accessed via Fox Covert on Therfield Heath. They are currently out in bloom, and they provided the inspiration for our front covers this month from local photographer Bex Iles.

Day Trips & Special Events DAY TRIPS FROM ROYSTON

April also marks the start of marathon season and we’re proud to share details of many of our local inspirational runners who are running - including our very own Sharon who is undertaking her second London marathon in aid of GOSH. Our #TLMs focus on the great outdoors and Springtime pursuits, as the weather is getting nicer and the evenings getting longer we hope that you too are able to find the time to enjoy all that our local area has to offer. Keep an eye out for out team mentions and let us know how you’ll be making the most of your Spring.

As we are heading into Spring and the weather is starting to look brighter our #TLM’s this month are focusing on Spring Activites. We are sharing some of our favourite ways to spend time outdoors and making the most of the Spring season.

Spending just a little time outdoors is great for the mind. Even if you feel like you haven’t got the time, which sometimes is hard to do in our busy lives, stepping away for a while is hugely benefical. There are plenty of parks around Royston and the Villages, these are perfect for even just an hour outdoors. Priory Memorial Gardens in Royston gives you the option to bring the children and have fun in the park or sit on the grass just to relax. With the splash park due to open in the Summer it makes for a perfect (free!) day out.

Wimpole Estate is another gorgeous outdoor space just down the road from us. You can walk the grounds for free, or the gardens are well worth a visit, and for the energetic people amongst us, join in with the Park Runs taking place at the weekends. Of course we couldn’t go without mentioning the beautiful outdoor space we have in Therfield Heath, and with the blooming of the Pasque Flowers in April it is a must visit in the Spring, whether you go on the walk, use the Heath for outdoor sports or walking your little furry friends. If you are finding it hard to step away make use of your own garden. From gardening to sitting outside with a drink, all is beneficial to the mind and soul.

Look out for our team mentions throughout the magazine.

Royston Cave reopens for summer Royston Cave is reopening for a brand new season! In the company of our expert guides, take an unmissable tour and explore this unique, world famous heritage site. Learn about the cave’s secret past and delve into the mysterious world of the Templars. Royston Cave is an enigma. No records of its age or purpose exist. Some theories suggest it was used by the Knights Templar, others by King James I and the Freemasons. Discovered by accident in 1742, Royston Cave has continued to baffle visitors for centuries. Man-made and beehive shaped; the cave is cut 25ft into the chalk that underlies Royston’s ancient crossroad, Ermine Street and Icknield Way. Some suggest it is also the site where two ley-lines meet. It is believed that the ley-lines are a powerful source of healing energy and that the cave has been a sacred site for thousands of years.

The cave contains an extensive range of wall carvings representing the Crucifixion, the Holy Family and several saints including St Katherine, St Laurence and St Christopher. Elsewhere are figures of a horse and an Earth Goddess, believed to be Pagan symbols for fertility. Beside the carvings, the cave was found containing a human skull and fragments of a drinking vessel. 20th April - 28th September Open every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday (including Wednesdays in August). Out & About... Coombes Community Centre Royston’s only community centre in Burns Road has recently had some major improvements. Inside the building a platform lift has been installed which means there is access to all areas of the centre for everyone. In particular, the upstairs conference and meeting rooms and office can now be reached easily by anyone with a wheelchair, pushchair or difficulty climbing the stairs. All the toilets have been refurbished and the Rainbow Playgroup has a new floor and kitchen units as well. The free car park for users of the centre is vastly expanded and will now hold 3 times the number of cars than before. There will be bike racks, spaces for disabled drivers and motorbikes. The infrastructure is in place for an electric car charging point if the demand arises in the near future. New LED and energy saving lights have been fitted in and outside the centre. The large grass play area at the back will now be fenced so it will be a safe area for parties to use in the summer, and will also enhance the facilities for the playgroup. The improvements have been largely funded by grants from North Hertfordshire District Council and the Brian Racher Trust. But to cover the day-to-day costs of running the centre the only income is from hiring rooms. So the centre must continue

to be used by the community to remain a benefit for the area. At the moment it is gloriously busy, but there is always room for more groups and more improvements. The centre is run by voluntary Trustees who operate the centre for the benefit of the local community of Royston and the surrounding area. Many people have a fixed idea of what a community centre might be like inside but Coombes Community Centre is bright, light, clean and modern with free wi-fi and rooms of all sizes and prices. It is run by the Royston Community Association (RCA), a registered charity, which can offer encouragement and practical assistance to anyone wishing to start up new activities for the community. There are exciting plans for the near future with all the window frames being replaced this coming financial year and the following year a new hall floor. An ambitious expansion plan has always been part of the centre’s future and this could still come

to fruition with sufficient funding. The centre could offer a huge hall suitable for large gatherings of 500 people, rooms for a possible community radio station or maybe even a ten pin bowling alley with café and games room. The RCA Trustees are pushing forward the developments to take advantage of the increased population of Royston and to make the centre a credit to the town as well as being useful to as many of the residents as possible. A new website is on the way, but while that is in progress the latest information is available on Facebook and you can follow the centre on Twitter. So why not come and see for yourself what we have to offer. Contact Gillian Morland or Carol Fossick in the office on 01763 248081 or email coombescentre@gmail.com

Spotlight On... Arthur Rank Hospice charity Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is inviting walkers to dust off their crimpers, grab their leg warmers and give their Saturday night the disco fever, at their annual memory walk. Star Shine Night Walk will go retro with a 1980s theme on Saturday 18th May. This year’s fun-filled walk will start at 8pm. Walkers take on a 6.5 or 10 mile route taking in Cambridge’s most historical streets and countryside, which starts and finishes at the Shelford Rugby Club. Emma Thong from Cambridge took part with 8 others last year as part of ‘Team Louise’ in memory of her sister-in-law. Collectively the family-team raised over £1000 for the Hospice. She said: “Going through the finish line at the end was tearful. It was kind of like an end. But it was good: the feeling and the ambiance and everything. At one point some people behind us were singing cheery songs. We were saying after about how nice it was that people were happy and I think that everyone felt the same way. We’d all been kind of there and knew what it’s like and we were just all supporting each other.” The popular annual event is one

Our speaker this month was Frances Benton who spoke about “A Passion for Pearls”. Her love of pearls began in childhood when she was given her grandma’s necklace. After retiring Frances started a business producing jewellery. Frances lives in France for 6 months of the year and for the rest tours the UK giving talks. We learnt that there are three types of pearls. These are natural pearls, which are rare and expensive. Cultured pearls, which are, produced on farms, are real pearls but reasonably priced. Simulated pearls are much cheaper.Frances had a display of necklaces, earrings and brooches for sale. She donated all profits to charities and has raised over £55,000.

We all love cheese, so a cheese tasting session to round off our monthly meeting proved extremely popular! International cheese judge John Pearson gave an entertaining account of his career in the food industry plus his top tips about which cheese to buy and how to store it. It came as no surprise that despite the wide variety on offer Cheddar is still the firm favourite. Why not venture out for a walk this Easter to see the Pasque Flowers. This route was printed with kind permission of Great Shelford Parish Council (shelford.lucidata.com/walks/walk44.htm)

News from the conservators It was great to host over 70 pupils from Greneway School on March 12th, in what can best be described as awful weather. They walked across much of the eastern side of the site, visiting an assortment of historic monuments (including the oldest one in Hertfordshire) while hearing about subjects as diverse as what we are trying to do to protect ground nesting birds and the fascinating relationship between ants and chalkhill blue butterflies. Please remember that keeping yourself and your dog on pathways at all times will help the ground nesting birds be successful. We ask dogs to be on leads in certain areas because they are the areas where dogs tend to cause the most problems. Please help us look after these declining bird species across the nature reserve while they are trying to breed.

you may inadvertently step on buds that are waiting to open. The public meeting is now planned for 23rd May to open up discussion on car parking, dog walking and the Byelaws which have not been updated since 1989. We have created a new dog exercise area between the Golf & Sports Club to encourage the exercise of dogs here instead of on the Rugby pitches were the constant issue of dog faeces has been causing a great deal of concern and extra work, so we hope people will use it.

The first pasqueflowers have been out since the start of March. Please remember to enjoy their beauty and avoid trampling the area because

Spring is in the air, and it’s already feeling like summer is on its way with the lighter mornings and evenings! For me April is very outdoorsy full of fitness, preparing myself for London Marathon and our covers this month have inspired me to take lots of walks over the Heath to see the stunning Pasque flowers which, the majority of the time will involve a circular walk via The Heath Café and Fox and Duck pub, It’s too hard to resist this time of year! And the Heath does have one of the best beer gardens around with amazing views of the sunsets and sunrises!

Book Review: 101 uses for a Poo bag I read this book with a wry smile on my face; as every dog owner knows, these things get everywhere. Whichever coat I pick up, whichever handbag, I can be sure to reach in and find a bunch of twisted up plastic bags. This little book contains some hugely sensible, practical tips – I have never thought of using the bag as a temporary water bowl or for carrying a wet tennis ball – alongside

the, quite frankly, bonkers suggestions of wearing it as a hat or using it as emergency gift wrap. Sally’s tongue-firmly-in-cheek book is the perfect gift for dog owners everywhere. To buy the book visit: www.dog-and-bone.co.uk/ books/101-uses-for-a-poo-bag

My Local Life Sally stone

Sally Stone is the proud owner of Homemade @ The Barn in Bassingbourn. The Barn has over 35 unique sellers selling a huge variety of beautiful upcycled, vintage, retro, and handmade items which make for glorious gifts and presents, stunning home accessories or even just treats for yourself. Find out a bit more about Sally and the lady behind the business: Where do you live? I have lived in Wrestlingworth village for nine years and love the community and my friends. Tell us about your business? I setup Homemade @ The Barn on 23rd June 2018, I rent space to 37 people who either hand craft items from felt key bowls to wooden clocks and knitted hats or some people sell vintage, retro or just simply second time around.

by beautiful things created by talented people! Best thing that has happened to you recently? There are many amazing things that have happened in my life, jumping free fall out of a plane from 15,000 feet, travelling round India and Australia, diving with sharks, to name but a few but working for myself hits the top spot as its been a dream for so long. Also, getting my son on the school bus by himself, thats such a big step for him, I feel it deserves a mention What are you looking forward to most this month? I’m really looking forward to Easter. I love everything it represents, the giving of new life, new beginnings, spring and babies and not forgetting family and food.

Having my own business is bloomin’ awesome! I cannot describe how I feel, knowing that I have created this beautiful space. What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? My most valuable lessons learnt are to be patient, only worry about the things you can change, if it’s out of your control, just let it go. Don’t forget, everyone has the right to be who they want to be, to express themselves and their opinion, and to dress as they wish!

What do you love about your work?

What is your proudest moment?

My love is upcycling furniture, I love taking on new commissions. I sometimes use decoupage too, I find it very therapeutic. I love my job so much and I i cannot class it as work - it’s my passion, my hobby, and I’m surrounded

My proudest moment would be giving birth to my son - with no pain relief! He 07730 496225 or 07387 100455 makes me happy everyday. Life is hard as homemadeatthebarn@gmail.com he is autistic, but we muddle through one www.homemadeatthebarn.co.uk day at a time.

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Lemon Polenta Cake Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing. This month I would like to share with you a fresh and zingy lemon cake it is the perfect antidote to all those Chocolate Easter Eggs - if it is indeed possible to have too much chocolate? Coincidentally, this cake happens to be gluten free so happily it is safe for celiacs although it is made with almonds so to be avoided by people with nut allergies.

Preheat the oven to 170° and grease and line either 1 x 20 cms loose bottomed round cake tin or 2 x loaf tins and we are good to start cooking. Lemon Polenta Cake • 200g ground almonds • 100g polenta, dried • 200g butter, room temperature • 200g caster sugar • 3 eggs, from health and happy free running hens

45 minutes to an hour until the mixture has risen slightly and is golden brown in colour. While the cake is cooking zest 2 of the lemons and juice the remaining 3 and half lemons. Add this to the 80g of caster sugar and heat enough only to dissolve the sugar. When you remove the cake from the oven prick the surface all over the cake and pour the lemon juice mixture all over the cake and let it soak in, there may seem to be too much liquid but, trust me, it will soak in! Leave to cool in the tin then store in an airtight container until it is needed.

If you are serving at a dinner party I would suggest polite sized wedges from a round tin with lashing of whipped cream or crème • 1 tsp baking powder fraîche and a few fresh raspberries or blueberries, but if it is something a little • 80g caster sugar less formal you are looking for then a little Begin by creaming the butter and sugar square served with a cup of tea is always together until it becomes pale in colour and well received! I am sorry but I have no idea light and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs, how long this beauty will keep as once it is do not worry if the mixture curdles slightly discovered in our house it disappears! simply add a spoon of the ground almonds and continue to beat the mixture. Then add Until next time dear reader... the remaining almonds, the Polenta and baking powder. Next stir in the grated zest of one lemon and the juice of half a lemon. Pour the mixture into the tin and place in the center of the oven for approximately • 4 lemons

Hidden in the chalk hills up a tree lined avenue just off of Newmarket Road is a hidden gem Burloes Hall, many Roystonians pass by the entrance every day and see the sign but unless you have attended a wedding or event there in recent years, I doubt you know of its existence. The house itself has been in the same family since 1923 and is a thriving farm estate, family home, and now also boasts one of the best wedding venues in East Anglia. Each April until September a huge pole marquee is erected with the option on balmy summer days to open up the side panels on the marquee to reveal rolling countryside with grazing cattle the views are idyllic plus the stunning house is the perfect backdrop for photographs and drinks on the lawns or stroll through hidden gardens. The venue has a capacity to seat 250 guests and allow you exclusive use for your wedding. Think Garden, Think Richard Materials For A Purpose... Path Products Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Continuing my series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose I am going to be discussing how best to choose the right materials for your desired purpose and how they best fit into the design of a space. I want to get you thinking about the options you have and how the right selection can give you a cohesive, timeless solution rather than a predictable, uninspiring result. This month I want to investigate path products. Journey through a space is a classic reason for creating a path. There can be numerous reasons for needing a path from access to the garden shed, to traveling to the compost heap at the bottom of the garden. Some journeys are very functional while others are less obvious about their purpose. In a small garden a paved path from a sandstone patio along a rectilinear path of the same material to the garden shed makes perfect sense. The line of the path and the continuity of materials define the purpose. When a patio area finishes and there is more garden to engage with, but no obvious path, then the journey

becomes less obvious. The shape of the flower beds can then be used to manipulate the journey. A well-positioned larger plant will encourage you to want to look beyond it and experience what is round the corner. The position of borders are helping to indicate the journey on the lawn and through the space. Perhaps the top of a pergola can be seen beyond the planting or the sound of water is pulling you along to find out. If the path is very obvious then the experience of working out the journey is quite different. Atmosphere can be created by the clever use of paths in a garden design. I recently designed a garden using red brick pavers that meandered around the edge of a lawn on one side and a deep border on the other. The path material not only tied in with the old property in style and colour, but the atmosphere of rustic and informal curves helped bring the design together. The journey under foot may have been firm but the feeling was gentle and relaxed. Had I designed a straight line from one entertaining patio to another at the top of the garden with sawn edged granite planks the effect would have created a very different atmosphere. It is important to consider the style you aspire to when designing a garden as the material selection can be used to develop the theme. Very contemporary material are in conflict with the design style of rural rustic charm. Whereas large square porcelain pieces laid to continue the outside-inside living style create a very contemporary look.

Anticipation is an important part of the experience of a garden space. The idea of creating different rooms in the garden has been around for years but the linking factor is always a path. Paths come in all different material shapes and sizes but how they are positioned in the space helps to give the sense of journey. Hard landscaping certainly has its place in the garden but a simple grass path cut through a wild flower meadow has a lovely charm about it especially if the end point is not obvious. I do like a focal point at the end of a path but trying to cultivate a feeling of experiencing the garden and allowing the spaces to reveal themselves is a concept I like to develop with clients. Transition points using paths help mark movement from one space to the next. A change of material on the path helps to reinforce the change and can be gentle or abrupt depending on the reason for the transition. For example if you moved from a paved entertaining space toward a shady shrub walk you may choose to transition to bark pieces as a path material. Gentle transition can be achieved by gradually petering out a paving material through gravel or grass to becoming a stepping stone path that gently ends. For more in depth advice or garden design

As an early intervention service, we help families ‘get back on track’, thus often preventing or reducing the need for statutory services or for a child to go into care. We estimate it costs £1500 a year to provide a Volunteer, whereas it costs around £3,000 a week, or £156,000 year, to fund a child in residential care. Good governance is key to providing this essential service and we provide a comprehensive induction programme for new trustees. Seven networking openers

Business contacts are important – networking should be a key part of any SME’s marketing. If like me you find it hard to begin conversations in a room of strangers, here are some useful opening lines I’ve gathered.

“Have you been here before?” • Useful at regular weekly/ monthly meetings – if they haven’t, you can share the newbie experience and if they have, they’re usually very happy to give you the lowdown. “So, what brings you to a ????? meeting?” • It’s a reasonable question to ask – we’re all there for a reason. And if you are asked, answer truthfully! “Breakfast smells good!” • Commenting about food is always a win – although I find that saying nice things about it is much better received than being negative! “So, how was your journey here?” • The classic Cambridge question – or any city where transport is tricky. There’s bound to be a story about it. “Hi, I’m Julian.” • So simple, yet sometimes

so difficult. But plenty of people start conversations with me like this. Don’t overthink it, just offer a hand to shake and say the words (then shut up and listen)! “How’s business?” • Great in business circles – we all like talking about ourselves. My tip is to answer positively and truthfully – and never invent success stories, they have a habit of finding you out “Crumbs! I hate networking.” • This is how I started! I’d see someone else standing miserably in the corner, so I’d walk up and start a conversation about our mutual lack of desire to chat to strangers. It often led to all sorts of interesting introductions! And once you begin a conversation, ask more questions than you answer. It’s ironic, but people find you much more interesting if you let them talk about themselves! Let me know how you get on!
