With summer temperatures sizzling at the time of writing, it looks like we may be in for a long hot summer to rival ‘76. How perfect this will be for the school holidays! There are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from, and we’ve highlighted a few options on our what’s on pages, paying particular attention to free or low-cost events at local country parks and museums. Take your little ones to enjoy activities such as bug hunts, den building, camouflage, moth trapping or archery. On the weekends look out for fun events such as the Royston Kite Festival in early August, the Ashwell Show, the Fenland Fair and Benington Chilli Festival. Why not enjoy outdoor theatre, courtesy of the Mikado visiting Fowlmere, Taming of the Shrew at Corpus Christi or Romeo and Juliet at Wimpole Hall. Whatever your preference, it is worth reading our article on sun safety on page 23. Looking after our skin is essential throughout the year but especially so during the high intensity rays in the summer months. Learn what changes you can make to help protect your children and teen’s delicate skin for their later years.

FROM PLANET TO PLANT!

The great and woefully under-rated John Otway once sang, “Beware of the flowers, ‘cos I’m sure they’re gonna get you…”, adding, by way of emphasis, “Yeah!” His lyric could well stand as a strapline for this year’s contribution by local drama group CADS to the Royston Arts Festival in September. “Little Shop of Horrors” follows the sell-out success of last year’s “Return to the Forbidden Planet” and features a cool mixture of B-movie kitsch, rock’n’roll, and carnivorous vegetation! The story opens in New York where Seymour Krelborn, a young orphan with poor prospects, and Audrey, a pretty blonde with poorer fashion sense, find themselves working together in the somewhat rundown Mushnik’s Florists. One night, while Seymour is browsing the wholesale flower district, there is a sudden total eclipse of the sun, and when the light returns, a small, mysterious plant has appeared. Seymour, who is secretly in love with Audrey, names the plant Audrey II in her honour. But the mystery plant has a secret which will affect the lives of everyone who comes within range of its tendrils... The CADS show is something of family affair, with David Atkins directing, and Louise Atkins as Musical Director. Louise says, “Forbidden Planet proved that CADS could, after all, do musicals and do them pretty well. It was so well received that we really wanted to do another one for this year’s festival and felt that this was its natural successor. The music in Little Shop is an upbeat blend of girl-group harmonies and Motown-inspired pop and we’ve got together a great cast that should really make it go with a swing.” “Little Shop” is due to be performed on 25th, 26th and 27th September at Meridian School, with evening performances at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 (£5 for students) and go on sale on 2nd September. You can book via the CADS website at www. cadsroyston.org.uk or in the traditional way by ringing the CADS Box Office on 07925 674967.

Cash mob happy

In the last 3 months, a new spending spree has been taking Royston by surprise or, more accurately, has been giving a pleasant surprise to local retailers. More than 100 people have demonstrated their support for local businesses by each spending £5 at three cash mobs – the first in Hertfordshire. The cash mob idea is new to the UK - it started in the USA in August 2011 as a practical way to shine a spotlight on local shops, particularly in difficult times. It brings local people together to do something positive and spontaneous – the shop to be mobbed is only decided minutes before the fivers are spent. Ladds and the Stationery Cupboard in the High Street were delighted to be cash mobbed in April and May. In early July, the market stalls outside Mica Hardware were the focus for the third spending spree by young and old. The contribution of young people has been important. Brother and sister Jonathan and Katherine Swarbrick have joined in all three cash mobs with their mother Clare, who says: “I think we need to encourage our children to use local shops from the earliest age otherwise, when they’re my age, there won’t be any.” Organiser Chris Lee has been delighted with the success of the cash mobs. “It’s about much more than just spending our money locally – it can lead to further community involvement, create new friendships, and it shows others how each one of us can make a big difference in small ways.” If you’re interested in organising the next cash mob, e-mail Chris at leeinroyston@aol.com. photography exhibition

Photographer Anna Marriage is exhibiting at Curwens Gallery until 2nd September. In her career, Anna focuses on social photography but in her spare time she enjoys experimenting with different aspects of photography such as landscapes, portraits and high speed flash photography. Anna explains, “I love the challenge and find that just because I have been a photographer for over 20 years it doesn’t mean that different types of photography come naturally, some have to be worked at. “I have some work up at Curwens which will be displayed now until September 2nd – I have priced to sell my work at only £60 for a 12x16 framed photograph ready to hang, they make great presents and come in a range of subject matter.”

OUT & ABOUT Royston Rotary Club

royston kite festival Thousands of people are expected to attend this year’s Rotary Club of Royston’s Charity Kite Festival on Therfield Heath on 4th August. During the past 10 years the event has raised more than £45,000 for both local and national charities. Organiser Karin Weston said: “The kite festival has always been a spectacular event as well as raising so much for charity. “Even after 10 years we are still as excited as ever over organising an event which has become part of the tapestry of Royston.” She added: “We aim to make it an entertaining occasion, but we are also raising money for our President’s charity of the year.” This year President Ray Munden’s charity receiving support from the event will be the Garden House Hospice in Letchworth, which will be given all the proceeds from the gate receipts. BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Andie Harper will be opening the event. Displays will include many difference aspects of kite-flying. About 60 stalls – most of which will be run by local community groups – will be holding activities around the main arena. “All we need is a good crowd and, obviously, kite-flying weather,” added Karin. AUGUST 13 • ISSUE 96 Quarter page ad:Layout 1

Want to brighten up your home this summer?

Kieran Butler, manager of local renovations business, Ashton Renovations, looks at helpful decorating solutions to common problems. Cracks keep appearing? Do you find that no matter how many times you run over that small crack with your filling knife and filler, when you stand back and admire your handy work... the crack has appeared yet again?! Solution- Try scratching down the crack with a sharp tool like a flat screwdriver, creating a deeper cavity and then re filling. This will eradicate the problem from below the surface. Paint Peeling? Do you find that in some areas of your property the paint keeps peeling for no apparent reason. Solution- Try mixing your first coat of paint with 50% water then applying two further top coats. Fresh plaster absorbs the water out of undiluted paint leaving a dry paint covering which is unable to stick to the wall and will in time flake and peel. Where to start? Unsure whether to start by painting the woodwork or the walls first? Solution- Always paint the ceiling and walls first as the water based emulsion can easily be removed from the woodwork with warm water or sandpaper. It can even be left on, as emulsion is a natural undercoat and won’t harm the wood. However it’s not so easy to remove an oil based paint as it’s thicker and requires a propriety cleaner such as white spirit. Struggling to cut in neatly? No matter how many times you cut in those tricky angles are you finding your end product is not improving? Solution- Try mixing down your emulsion paint with 10% water. The added water will reduce resistance, creating an easier surface to glide the brush over and resulting in a nice, neat finish. No need for masking tape! Let us do the job for you! Alternatively you can switch the kettle on, put your feet up and let the Ashton Renovations team do it all for you: rest assured you will delighted by the outcome! Ashton Renovations deliver a full range of interior services. We are based locally on Melbourn High Street and we’re always pleased to give out free friendly advice so if you have any queries regarding decorating or any other improvements you wish to make to your home, please don’t hesitate to contact us today on 01763 290335 or alternatively check us out online at www.ashtonrenovations.co.uk. Since moving to Ashwell with her young family, vintage fabric has kept her design passion alive. Much of her stock is Heals fabrics from the 1960s and 1970s, with many able to claim their place in textile history. Lucy has customers all over the world who are searching for unique pieces, but also many local customers who are looking for something original and beautiful to enhance their home. Lucy’s fabrics make great blinds and curtains, and she offers a top quality making service. With her large stock you can generally find something to suit, so please have a look at her website where you can see examples of cushions, wall hangings and fabric or contact her to arrange a time to come and look. Lucy can also visit your home to give advice on soft furnishing styles, measure windows or to choose fabrics on site. Palazzo’s Picnic Pesto Penne Pasta Heading out for a picnic this summer? Try this lovely refreshing Pesto Pasta dish to complement your basket.

Ingredients

• 500g of your favorite pasta (preferably Penne, Fusilli or Orecchiette) • 1/4 cup walnuts • 1/4 cup pine nuts • 3 tablespoons chopped garlic (9 cloves) • 5 cups fresh basil leaves • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1 1/2 cups good olive oil • 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan

Method

1. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and cook the pasta as per the instructions on the packet, then drain and cool by spreading the pasta out in a shallow dish. 2. Next make the Pesto by placing the walnuts, pine nuts, and garlic into a food processor fitted with a steel blade and process for 15 seconds. 3. Add the basil leaves, salt, and pepper. 4. Next with the processor running, slowly pour the olive oil into the bowl through the feed tube and process until the pesto is thoroughly pureed, then add the Parmesan and puree for another minute. 5. Once the pasta has cooled to room temperature add the Pesto sauce and stir through, then place into a seal-able container and refrigerate until required. Keep this for no longer than three days. For a fantastic variation add some cooked garden peas at the end, or cherry tomatoes and mozarella. We would also like to congratulate Ad Hoc on their first birthday... Well done!! Bon Appetito!!

New Business Launch

Sat 24th, Sun 25th & Mon 26th August

Something-totreasure has been operating as a mobile pottery painting business for just under a year, offering unique, personalised pottery and silver charms. The business is based in Buntingford, but as of September will also be operating from a unit at Hyde Hall Farm in Buckland, just down the A10. Karen Evans has worked as a foundation stage teacher for 12 years, specialising in special needs, but has always wanted her own business. She attended a course in making silver finger print and hand/foot print charms and began making them for friends. She went on to do a pottery course and invested in her own kiln. Something to Treasure offers pottery painting and printing to individuals and groups such as toddlers, Brownies and birthday parties. Expect to find a wide variety of products to paint ranging from plates, mugs, animals, tiles, vases, clocks and seasonal goods. Being mobile means that Karen can bring pottery to the customer in their own home or venue to paint, take it away to glaze and fire, and return it finished and wrapped. The new premises in Buckland mean Karen can also offer parties on site. There will also be other crafts available such as decoupage and the silver charms. Something to Treasure will be open during some evenings to give adults the chance to paint, as well as after school and weekends to cater for older children. During the week there will also be craft sessions for preschool children to come and enjoy being creative with paint and glue. So for some creative fun or a unique present, get in touch with Karen at Something to Treasure on 07425 134363 or Karen@Something-to-treasure.com www.something-to-treasure.com facebook.com/SomethingToTreasure

At last summer is here! At the start of July we went on our Mystery Trip, the coach taking us down the A10 to Hoddesdon and Broxbourne where we boarded a boat on the River Lea for a lovely evening cruise. The weather was perfect and the boat company provided us with a very tasty ploughman’s supper. At our next meeting Margaret Rogers came to speak about ‘A Nice Cup of Tea’. Her research had traced the origins of tea back to China, from where it spread to Japan and onto Europe and it is now one of the most popular drinks in the world. Besides being a very enjoyable beverage it also has many health benefits. We ended the Summer Programme with our Summer Social celebrating with a royal theme the Queen’s Coronation 60th Anniversary and the birth of her third great grandchild, third in line to the throne. We all took part in a Royal Quiz and at the end enjoyed a fish and chip supper. New members are always welcome. Why not join us at our first meeting of the Autumn Term on Monday 9 September. We meet in the Town Hall on Monday evenings starting at 8pm. Speaker meetings end at 10pm and Social Evenings end at 9.30pm. For further details about our club please contact: Wendy Pearce on 01763 231381 or Mavis Ingle on 01763 222524 or email: roysia10@ yahoo.co.uk.

DANCING AT WORK IS OFFICIALLY “WOW!

Townswomen’s Guild

With much anticipation we welcomed Damien O’Dell to our July meeting. Damien came to talk to us about his adventures as a ghost hunter in Hertfordshire. He told us of how his interest started when he saw a ghost as a child in West London and then went on to tell us about haunted buildings in Royston. These were ‘Hendricks’ in Fish Hill where several strange occurrences were reported, including children’s voices and objects moving. An old lady was believed to have been seen in the Old Police Station and the ghosts of an highwayman and the Reverend Banyer at The Banyers Hotel. He also talked about other places in Hertfordshire that he had investigated. Our next meeting will be in September when we will be having a Members Meeting and Macmillan Coffee morning. There will be a picture quiz and a bring and buy sale. Royston WI AM meets in Market Hill rooms, Royston at 10.30 on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Mousetraps and Happy Holidays

Ralph Waldo Emerson is often quoted as saying, “Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.” It’s a widely-used mantra for innovation, but it overlooks a vital fact: the world needs to know julian berry about the mousetrap first! Just as there are some great innovators and skilled craftspeople out there, there are also specialist marketers and communicators and can I suggest your business needs both. Your customers need to receive and understand your message if you are to be successful. Attendees at my July workshop on ‘Planning an effective email campaign’ were amazed to discover the person receiving your emails only spends about 3 seconds reading your subject line and deciding if they’re going to open it now, later or not at all. Write a weak subject line and all the effort that goes into crafting your campaign is wasted. So where could you learn these vital secrets? Well, you could try and self-teach yourself these skills using books or the internet, but will that a good use of your time? What resources are wasted while you go through the process of trial and error? Just how long is your learning curve going to be? If it’s a task that will be frequently repeated, I recommend you get an expert to teach you (or a member of your team) quickly. And if it’s a one-off task, let the expert do it for you. So whilst we all enjoy learning new things and being ‘independent’, I strongly advise all my coaching clients not to try and be a ‘Jack-of-all-Trades’. Instead, be Master-of-one: the thing that only you can deliver; the running of a successful business. Have a great summer – I hope you get a relaxing break. (If you worry about time away from your business, let’s talk - I have client slots coming available this autumn.) www.julianberry.co.uk

Tannery pupils embrace nature The Nature Rangers Club has been involved in some wonderful activities this term. The club have continue to enjoy the wildlife and flora of our lovely school environment and the children have been involved in projects to improve our Wildlife Area. As well as regularly topping up the bird feeders and bird baths they are keep their eyes open for any general maintenance such as litter picking, clearing overgrown areas and planting. The children also nurtured the tadpoles until they changed into frogs and made several nesting stations, with wool, straw, tumble dryer fluff, feathers and twigs for birds to collect items when building their nests. They also made some lovely art with natural materials that we found in the Wildlife Area!

Meanwhile, in Gardening Club the children planted three variety of beans – Runner, Broad and French – alongside beetroot, onions, sweetcorn, carrots and potatoes. Salad seeds planted included lettuce, tomato, radish, and peppers. Despite our efforts to deter the pigeons our pea and cabbage plants were eaten shortly after planting! The FTDS kindly donated £50 towards the cost of compost and other materials. Children brought in packets of flower seeds from home and alongside our home collected marigold seeds, these have grown well and are making a colourful display. The club applied to Tesco to donate any “passed their best” bedding plants that were due to be thrown out and successfully revived many with a lot of water and some TLC. We were pleased to host a visit by Year 10 children and staff from Meridian school who sought our advice on planning a garden allotment. Tannery Young Gardeners proved to be very knowledgeable about their topic! Don’t forget the free outdoor play sessions for 4-11 year olds throughout the summer holidays. Play Ranger Sessions take place in Priory Memorial Gardens and Serby Avenue Play area in Royston, Ashwell, Therfield, Barkway and Sandon between Mon 29th July - Thurs 22nd August. For full details of when sessions take place, see the What’s On pages.

news from our schools

Young Scientists

The annual science day organised by parents and governors of the school took place on Friday 7th June. The children and the staff had a great time investigating and discovering new things. Some children had a ‘passport’ and travelled around the hall carrying out different experiments. Including finding out how sun cream works by looking at skin and seeing the uv rays being blocked by the sun cream. Medimmune brought a big model nose with them. The children used the nose to select different strains of the flu virus to show how scientists predict what the next strain of flu is likely to be. Then they had a go at making a model antibody and flu virus. In nursery and reception the children had a go at picking up jelly and looked at magic water bottles that sometimes didn’t let the water out! This fantastic day was planned and led by a team of parents and governors. The staff are very grateful to all those who helped and we are pleased to have such a supportive team of parents and governors in our school. We are looking to recruit a new community governor, if you want to find out more about the role please contact the school office.

Roysia rocks!

During hot weather, indoor school concerts can become a bit stuffy - but Roysia Middle School’s end of year concert was a fantastic al fresco affair. With three days to go, the school decided to move the concert outside. With parents, staff and the PTA all pulling together, a stage was built on the sports field, PA system borrowed and children rehearsed in their new ‘venue’. 250 parents, friends and family, many with picnics, were treated to a rousing evening of music performed by many of the pupils, with singing and instrumental performances, solo and group routines. “I’ve never heard of anything like this happening in Royston,” commented one parent “There were so many enthusiastic children taking part, it was a wonderful, relaxed, fun evening”

‘DRACULA SPECTACULA’

Pupils from Greneway School have been busy rehearsing after school and at weekends for their production of ‘Dracula Spectacula’. With over 90 pupils participating and a team of 20 more behind the scenes, it promised to be a show-stopping event by the 9-13 year olds. An ambitious script and musical score was brought to life with colourful costumes and dramatic scenery. Leader of Music, Shaunaid Crosby said “I am really excited by the talented cast we have; their energy and enthusiasm during rehearsals has been fantastic. This is a complex story, based on the theme of Count Dracula, with challenging songs and choreography. Everyone gave 100% over the past few months and the performances were amazing.”

In the garden... August

Horticulturalist Richard Arnott recommends seasonal plants for your garden. Richard lives in Melbourn with his family where he runs his garden design and build company, Garden Design Solutions.

The garden is really alive with flowers and foliage in this glorious summer weather we are having. The summer months are when the herbaceous perennials become the stars of the garden. There are many plants to choose from, so try to narrow it down to a specific colour range or flower form as a starting point. Generally speaking a well drained, fertile soil in sun is a good garden position. I love to mix perennials and grasses in the borders I create and choose plants that can hold their structure into the autumn and beyond. Heleniums look great drifting through a border of perennials, they have tall stems and daisy shaped flowers. Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’, pictured below, produces lovely rich orange-red rays that fade to dark ochre and is a magnet for bees. If you are creating a warm colour border Helenium ‘Pipsqueak’ and Helenium ‘The Bishop’ offer golden flowers. It is worth remembering that they are good cut flowers too. Achillea ‘Cerise Queen’ has a good flat flower form that contrasts well with upright flower shapes such as spires and daisies, it is dark pink in flower and should be used in the front or middle of the border. A good partner for Achillea is Salvia ‘Mainacht’ that produces spires of blue flowers. This looks great drifting through the border. Remember if you have the space plant in groups to get the best results. Grasses work really well mixed with herbaceous perennials, try Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, Stipa tennuissima or Miscanthus ‘Marlepartus’. For inspiration why not look at this planting style in one of the many good gardens to visit at this time of year. I recommend RHS Wisley Surrey, Pensthorpe Nature reserve Norfolk and National Trust Sissinghurst Castle garden Kent to name but a few. Make a day of it and pack a camera and a picnic. www.thinkgardenthinkrichard.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is

We make sure we turn
