COMMUNITY

WELCOME To the December issue of The Listing Our Christmas issue is my favourite of the whole year - and this year it’s a double whammy as it’s also our 100th issue! Who would have thought, back in 2005, that The Listing would still be going strong 100 issues later.... It is thanks to all of you, our readers, advertisers, organisations and community (and undoubtedly a supportive family...) that The Listing is what it is today so THANK YOU for your continued support. It is a pleasure to publish and serve our community and we plan to be around for at least a hundred issues more.... keep your eyes peeled for exciting new developments in the coming year. Our front covers have always been a talking point and we are sure that you’ll enjoy looking back on all of our past covers. Why not take a look at our website for a closer look! The December issue is jam-packed full of events and activites for the Christmas season. Our pick this month is the ice rink at the Old Bull, as part of the Christmas Fayre on Saturday 7th December. And of course, our annual favourite “Shop in Royston” feature. Like town centres up and down the country, our own faces challenges as the retail landscape adapts to online shopping and the convenience of one-stop-shop stores. However, if you value singularity and believe in local retail as part of our community, please choose to shop locally for at least some of your Christmas shopping - there are hidden gems to be found!

DISNEYLAND PARIS

Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year

OUT & ABOUT Royston Town Centre

christmas fayre Small Business Saturday is an initiative designed to support, celebrate and champion the nation’s small businesses, on both a national and local level. Initially introduced three years ago in the USA by American Express, the UK’s inaugural Small Business Saturday takes place on 7th December. Events are taking place throughout the UK, including in Royston so come along and support local businesses during the Christmas Fayre.

Royston Means Business are proud to announce this year’s Christmas Fayre, which takes place on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December. The Ice Rink will be open in The Old Bull car park on Saturday 11am – 7pm and Sunday 9am – 5pm. Tickets are £4 each and can be purchased in advance from M-Viron (Phone Shop) in Royston High You can find out more and connect on social media Street. Pre-booking is advised due to high at www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com demand, but you can turn up on the day to purchase tickets for both days. Santa will be waiting for visitors in his grotto People often ask why Royston Cave has such limited opening hours on Saturday in the High Street between 1 and 4pm. Every child will particularly as it is such a unique place. receive a lovely gift from Santa, handpicked from Mia Caro (for babies The answer is quite simple. The Cave is made entirely of chalk and as to children up to 11 years - £3 per child) such it is very sensitive to water. Water can cause the chalk to expand Market stalls will line the High Street on Saturday afternoon selling and when it dries out the resulting contraction can cause cracks in the gifts and goodies for Christmas and the grand Christmas Lights Switch carvings. Of course this doesn’t happen overnight but it is important to keep the atmosphere in the Cave as constant as possible. Large on will take place at 4.30pm at The Cross. numbers of visitors also contribute to the humidity problem as all of us There will be music and other activities throughout the day to add to exhale water with each breath we take. the festive fun so come and join in! To help preserve the Cave, we limit the number of visitors and amount Royston Means Business would like to thank it’s sponsors : Royston of times the Cave is open and during the winter months the Cave is put First, Curwens, Linda Turner Interiors, Putterills, Redrow, Hitchin to bed until the Easter of the following year. However, we do appreciate that people want to see the Cave and so Property Trust for generously letting us have the use of their property for the grotto. Also Meldreth Plan and Landscapes for the loan of every Christmas we open up for a candlelight viewing. equipment, and Abbot Travel for the marquee. To coincide with the Royston Christmas Fayre Royston Cave will

Q QUALITY TOWN COUNCIL

ISSUE NO.28

DECEMBER 2013

Keeping Royston residents in touch with their local council

Royston’s Mayor, Cllr Bob Smith and Royston Town JUNE 2013 Council would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Royston residents a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

ISSUE NO.26

The Royston Town Mayor’s Community Trust Fund Awards

On Sunday 15 September over 100 plucky Royston residents, including Cubs and Beavers groups, spent the day giving our town centre area a good clean up and dust down! Organised by the Town Council’s Royston in Bloom group, everyone got stuck into litter picking, scrubbing and de-weeding streets and alleyways. They had made a huge impression on the area by the end of the day. We would like to thank all these community minded folk who worked so hard for their town and showed such dedication and commitment. Several ongoing issues were identified which Royston Town Council will be taking forward to other agencies for further action. It is sincerely hoped that we can do this again next year, not only in the Town centre, but also other areas of the town, which may need some much needed TLC. It is very encouraging to know that so many local residents care about Royston in this way and take such great pride in helping our wonderful town to look as good as it possibly can.

Don’t forget to apply for an award from the Mayor’s Community Trust Fund if your community organisation needs help for either the setting up of a new project, event, or capital scheme, which will be beneficial to the people of Royston. Applications for grants will open on Tuesday 2 January 2014. The closing date for applications is Thursday 13 February 2014. Grants will be awarded at the Town Meeting on Thursday 13 March 2014. Application forms can be obtained either from the Town Hall office or downloaded from our website www.roystontowncouncil.gov.uk. We look forward to helping our many excellent local groups and organisations again in 2014.

Thank you again, to all those who took part in this venture.

Royston Community Forum

www.thelisting.info • 01763 248447 • 10

Thirty eight Royston community groups and organisations came together in Royston Town Hall on 24 October to attend the first of what it is hoped will be an annual event, organised by Royston Town Council, as a legacy from ‘Royston 2012 A Year of Celebrations’. Three keynote speakers gave a lot of help and advice on issues and challenges currently facing voluntary groups and time was also set aside for everyone to discuss and share best practice. The evening was much enjoyed by all who attended and postmeeting evaluation showed that another Community Forum held next year would be well received. Our thanks go to all those who joined us that night and also to Royston Town Council for giving their support to our local voluntary community in this way.

Royston & District Museum and Art Gallery Celebrating the past, present and future of Royston and its district Sarah Russell, our new Museum Curator, has big plans for the museum, which will hopefully provide an exciting long-term future for this excellent local asset. Sarah, who joined us last April, was born in Rutland and has lived in the area for the last 3 years. Sarah qualified with a Masters degree in Museology and previously worked as Exhibitions Officer at IWM Duxford for 2½ years and at the Folk Museum in Cambridge. She therefore has a wealth of experience and knowledge to bring to her new role as our Curator. Sarah has a love of history and passion for bringing it alive for visitors. This is clear in her enthusiasm, not only for using innovation and modern technology to bring the museum to an even higher standard, but also in her determination to cement the museum within Royston and ensure that it offers something for everyone in the community. Sarah’s six main aims for the Museum are: to be considered as one of the premier local history museums in the country; to be resilient; to be a thriving centre of learning; to be at the centre of the community in Royston and also a thriving and renowned centre of volunteering; and finally to have a fully documented and maintained collection. Judging by the determination and vision Sarah is already showing since she arrived, we think she is well on her way to achieving those aims.

Royston in Bloom Railway Station Project

First Capital Connect station staff, and other community volunteers, planting up the area around the ‘Welcome to Royston’ banner on the station platform. Thanks go to First Capital Connect for their funding of this project and all the community volunteers who helped on the morning of 5 October 2013.

Royston Town Council bids farewell to a long-standing staff member Mrs Pam Robinson, who has been our administration officer for 18 years and who has been a familiar and friendly face to many residents for all that time, retired from her post in October and will be greatly missed by all. We would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all those years of dedicated service to Royston Town Council and wish her all the very best for the future and a well deserved rest from all her labours!

With thanks to our sponsors

NEW!! FAMILY FIT

Show your kids fitness can be fun – by doing it together! Get your kids off their computers, away from the TV and having some fun in the great outdoors – with YOU! What’s more you get to spend some quality time with your children in the great outdoors. Then you can kick back and relax for the rest of the weekend, knowing you’ve all done your fitness! So what’s it all about? The sessions are just 45 minutes and involve games and exercises with some races and competitive sports (such as tug of war and space hopper races), thrown in for good measure! Parkfit say it doesn’t matter how fit or unfit you are, because you do as much as you want to – whatever you do, it’s more than you would be doing sat on the sofa at home! Paul Harrison (aka ‘Harry’) is the Creator and Managing Director of leading outdoor fitness company Parkfit. With 23 years’ experience training both military personnel and professional sports people, plus heading up the frontline at Parkfit, Harry leads the way in bringing unique and diverse training sessions that no other fitness company provide. Harry has masterminded Family Fit sessions in an effort to encourage families to adopt healthier lifestyles and show kids fitness can be fun. Parkfit run adult outdoor fitness classes across Hertfordshire, Cambridge & Kent, as well as Kids Bootcamps (Parkfit Juniors) and even Kids Bootcamp Parties. But even with all this available, Harry still felt there was something missing. “All too often I hear the same reason adults can’t join in – childcare. I have so much experience in adult fitness and fitness for kids that I decided to combine the two

0330 123 9221

and provide something the whole family can enjoy together.” Being a dad himself, Harry is only too aware of the importance of daily exercise for kids especially in a world where child obesity is on the increase. “Good habits formed in childhood will guarantee healthier lifestyles in adulthood. If your child sees you doing it, they are going to follow and soon it will become a way of life for them. It’s one of the best things you can do for your kids.” Parkfit say they have been overwhelmed by the response to Family Fit sessions with new families joining each week. One mum reflects “This idea is genius! I have been trying to get my kids to exercise for ages but they love the fact that I come with them and we all motivate each other! It’s an amazing feeling knowing you’ve had such a good and healthy start to the weekend!”

Classes take place every Saturday morning at the Heath at 9.30am – 10.15am.

#RoystonConnects 3 Saving money, saving the planet

This third and final article in the ‘Royston Connects’ series on how online communication tools can help build local communities, shines a light on two Royston initiatives that keep items in use and out of landfill. At a time when household budgets are being squeezed and our ‘throwaway society’ is under attack, Royston Freecycle and Royston Classified address both issues by using social media to match people with ‘offers’ and ‘wants’. The Royston Freecycle Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/roystonrecycle/info) celebrates its 9th birthday this December and is run entirely by volunteers who have overseen 30,000 items changing hands for free. Membership is free and open to all, and the group has just signed up its 5,000th member. At a time when some say people know the price of everything and the value of nothing, it’s heartening to know that so many people are willing to give away their pre-loved possessions without expecting payment in return. For some there’s economic necessity in selling, rather than donating, items, which is where Royston Classified comes in. This online facility is all about keeping trade local; a convenient way for residents, businesses and organisations to trade old and new items, keeping them in use while helping to make Christmas more affordable. It’s free to register at http://roystonclassified.co.uk/index.php New for 2014 To mark the start of its 10th anniversary year, Royston Freecycle Group is launching the Royston Repair Cafe. In early 2014, this free event will invite people to bring broken items (tools, toys, bikes, small pieces of furniture, clothes and jewellery, and electrical items including IT hardware) for assessment and, where possible, repair. To find out more and to keep up to date as plans develop, go to www.facebook.com/RoystonRepairCafe You can continue the RoystonConnects discussion online by going to www.twitter.com/#roystonconnects and www.streetlife.com

Beauty by Erica is run by fully trained beauty therapist Erica Mansfield at her home in Melbourn. Since leaving school, Erica trained at Cambridge Regional College for two years, before going on to work at Lizzie’s health and beauty salon in Saffron Walden where she stayed for nine happy years, gaining lots of experience and leaving only when she had her first son and moved to Melbourn from Saffron Walden. This month I’m not sure if it’s the thought of the party season or people looking to improving their smile for 2014 - either way lots of questions on Teeth Whitening and Teeth Straightening…

Is Teeth Whitening Safe? Can Beauticians Do It? How Long Will My Teeth Stay White?

Teeth Whitening is perfectly safe for you AND your teeth IF YOU are tested and treated by a qualified DENTIST! European Law states ONLY dentists are legally allowed to provide any Teeth Whitening service or product using between 0.1% & 6% peroxide, as in the wrong hands you could damage your teeth or gums. The products found in beauty salons, whitening Kiosk’s and the home products

legally must be BELOW 0.1% - so with a low ingredient they’re not effective. Also I have found when a high level of peroxide is used for an ‘in-chair’ (one sitting) service the teeth will discolour quicker in 3-9 months. The whitening system I offer gives a steady and safe bleaching over a few weeks, which you can continue at home. You can order more product and ‘maintain’ the desired colour yourself over the next few years.

Fundraising ... with Facial Hair

The men of local chartered accountancy firm, UHY-WKH Partnership, have been facing a fundraising challenge head on. Quite literally. Throughout November and now into December, they are joining together to change the face of men’s health. Starting with Movember, four of their finest took part to raise funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health. Now, putting away their shaving kits, six soon-to-be beardy accountants are taking part in Decembeard in order to raise money to fight against the second highest cancer killer – bowel cancer. You can see how the Motastic Accountants got on with the initial challenge of Movember at moteam.co/motasticaccountants. They will be keeping us all updated on their fundraising efforts for Decembeard via justgiving.com/ beardyaccountants. Any donations will be warmly received.

The History of Royston Town Football Club 1875 -2012

On Thursday 5th December at 8pm in the Old Bull Hotel, Royston Town’s current President, Alan Barlow will be launching a brand new book charting the history of the club over a period of 138 years. When the Listing caught up with Alan earlier in the week he told us ‘ I first set out in the ALAN BARLOW summer of 2008 to start writing the book and naively believed I’d have it finished inside 18 months. How wrong I was and it has taken me over five and half years to finish it and bring to publication. ‘The book is my legacy to the club and reflects my passion for non league football in general and Royston Town in particular. I first got involved in the club as a player in 1975 and my involvement has continued unbroken in one form or another for 38 years.’ The book has been produced as quality hardback containing over 360 pages and 300 images and it is quite clear that a tremendous amount of research has gone into producing it. This is a fascinating insight into one of Royston’s oldest sporting organisation and reveals for the first time many previously unreported facts about the Club and the people who have been involved in it over the decades. Even for those who are not avid football fans the book provides many interesting perspectives on the social history of the town and many well known Royston personalities and families. ‘I doubt it will ever become a best seller but a lot of people have expressed interest in buying a copy and prelaunch orders have been very healthy’ commented Alan. Copies of the book can be purchased at a discounted price of £24.99 on the Launch night but if you want a quick preview then visit Alan’s website www.alanvbarlow.com which also has an on-line buying facility.

How’s It Hanging?

Students at Meridian School were given the opportunity to think and use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) as the Engineering giant Isambard Kingdom Brunel did in the 19th century. On 21st October 2013, two centuries later students were introduced to new technology, rotating top hats and bridge design. Mr Peter Ransom (President of the Maths Association) can be seen dressed up as Isambard Kingdom Brunel!

STUDENTS FROM MERIDIAN WORK WITH RENOWNED DESIGNER AT THE V&A

Art students worked with inspirational fashion and textile designer Juliana Sessions at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Juliana is well known for her innovative pattern cutting and knitwear designs and after setting up her own fashion outlet ‘Call me Madam’ in 1982, she went on to work for Alexander McQueen and presently lectures at Brighton and Nottingham Universities. Students were encouraged to use the V&A’s rich historical collection to inspire a range of fashion garments made from different weights and textures of paper. Students drew ispiration from unusual sources such as the Medieval and Renaissance tapestry collections. Students collaborated in groups of two and three to translate their ideas into innovative and contemporary designs. Students are now using this experience to further their ideas for their current coursework unit; Adorn, Decorate and Embellish. The day has left many enthused to pursue a career in the Arts with students commenting “Juliana was really down to earth, very inspirational and helped me with my future career decisions”.

Whole School Science Trail

In October Icknield Walk’s Science subject leader organised a Science trail around the school grounds. The children looked carefully at natural objects, thought about how their bodies work and generally enjoyed learning outdoors. The children completed the trail during the school day and then took their parents around at the end of the school day so the children could show their parents how much they had learned and experience the fun activities again. The children in the picture are finding out about what happens to their pulse rate when they exercise. Other activities included timing leaves to see which fell the fastest, bouncing balls to see which bounced the highest and looking in leaf litter for mini-beasts. Great fun was had by all!

WE ARE record Breakers!

Children from Roysia Middle School have been celebrating this week after becoming Guinness World Records™ title holders! 32 children from Year 5 took part in the Barnardo’s Young Supporters’ Concert at the Royal Albert Hall on 5th November 2013 and participated with 3,081 players to form the largest ocarina ensemble in the world, smashing the previous record of 831 set in China three years ago. Their performance of Ode to a Joyful New Star was arranged and conducted by Douglas Coombes MBE and was achieved after weeks of ocarina practice in their weekly music lesson. An audience of parents, friends and ocarina fans supported the children by learning to play together during the concert. The children also participated by learning a number of different songs for the concert, including many written by Douglas Coombes, a tribute to the Beatles, a selection of sea themed songs and many more. The school was particularly proud to support their rising star, Leonie Smith who had been chosen from over 1200 of the children taking part to sing a solo in the Barry Manilow hit, One Voice. Music Subject Leader, Mrs Amanda Mitchell said “We have some incredibly talented children in our school who worked extremely hard to prepare for the concert and world record attempt. I am so proud of what they have achieved”. News of the World Record has already gone on to achieve national recognition after being featured on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Radio 2 and Classic FM. Headteacher, Miss Zoe Linington said “The pupils were so excited - I was so very proud of them all!” The evening was hosted by TV presenter Andy Akinwolere and over £40,000 was raised for Barnardo’s from ticket sales.

news from our schools

Greneway celebrates Ofsted report Greneway was recently praised by an Ofsted inspection team with pupils’ learning behaviour and safety seen as outstanding. The inspection team noted that the school is calm and wellordered where staff and pupils exemplify the highest standards of conduct at all times. The levels of care and support for all pupils are key strengths of the school’s practice. Pupils are very positive about the school and their learning. Their attitudes to learning demonstrate a developing love of learning. The inspectors also stated that the pupils make good progress and standards of attainment at the end of Year 8 are above the expected levels for their age. Teaching is good overall, with outstanding practice in a wide range of subjects where teachers have high expectations of pupils and develop good working relationships in the classroom. They also recognised that the pupils feel safe and that they behave very well and work well together. Another identified strength was that the school values each individual and offers a wide range of broad and balanced subjects and activities that appeal to all pupils’ interests and ambitions. Head teacher Mrs Rawlings said staff were delighted that their continued hard work with the pupils was recognised and that the Ofsted Team were impressed by the children and staff. She added “This new framework for inspection is even more rigorous and challenging and I am extremely pleased that the Inspectors recognised the many strengths of our school and that we are a good school with outstanding features.”

Fabulous Baker Boy!

Roysia pupil Alexandre Turlais took part in one of a lifetime great baking experience in August 2013. He was very lucky to be one of 40 children selected to take part in Junior Bake Off 2013 seeing off competition from about 3000 children between 8 to 12 years old. He was able to take part in the quarter finals and met his baking idols Mary Berry and James Martin. However competition was fierce and Alexandre had to stop his journey then. Alexandre said.”I had the most fabulous time it was great fun, intense and very interesting. Everyone at the BBC was kind, helpful and friendly, I met some really nice children. I would recommend everyone to apply if they feel like it, it is a great confidence boosting” Alexandre was on CBBC on 11th November 2013 at 4.30 but you can catch him again on BBC iplayer.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is

misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn

up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just

the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

the garden... December christmas trees from royston heath InWinter is a great time to see the structure of your Premium Grade needle retaining Nordman Fir Christmas Trees will again be sold from the Royston Heath this year. The small team draw on over 20 years experience of buying and selling Christmas trees to provide the very best quality from sustainably managed plantations at half the price of the Garden Centres. They will be selling the the ever popular Nordman Fir with its soft needles that are will not fall when taken into a centrally heated house. Trees are 6-7 feet tall, the ideal height for the average home. The price remains the same as the last two years £35, however, this year for the first weekend of 30th November/1st December all trees will be £30. Royston Heath has proved to be an excellent site to select your tree with ample room to have a good look at the trees and plenty of space to park your vehicle. The Heath Sports Club always has excellent homemade soups and fresh bread if you need to warm up. Trees will only be available at weekends on the following dates: 30th November, 1st, 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, 21st & 22nd December. Once you have selected your tree it will be netted and ready for collection or carried to your car.

Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ would be in my top ten of winter specimens. It is an upright, deciduous shrub that is grown for its lovely clusters of small, fragrant, white and pink flowers. Plant it in an Cornus alba open position where you can enjoy the scent, in well ‘Sibirica’ drained, fertile soil. Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ (Dogwood) is grown for its beautiful coloured stems. It likes a well drained, fertile soil in an open position. Ideally it should be planted in groups to get maximum impact as shown in the photograph. Another pretty cornus is Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ just visible in the background of the photo. Euonymus fortune ‘Emerald and Gold’ is a good foliage plant for winter with green and gold variegation in the leaves. It is a low growing evergreen shrub that contrasts well with coloured stems. I have also seen it trained up walls and fences too. Buxus sempervirens (Box) is a classic garden evergreen and the main plant used for topiary. It is very versatile, evergreen shrub that is happy in well drained, fertile soil, in sun or shade. I love to use it as low hedging to delineate space in my garden designs and as mound forms to contrast with more upright plants such as Cornus. Saracococca hookeriana var. digyna is a lovely small, fragrant, evergreen shrub. It is charmingly also known as the Christmas box due to it looking like box and being in flower at Christmas time. It likes moist, fertile soil in sun or shade. I like to use it on the edge of paths where its scent can be enjoyed as you walk past. Mahonia x media ‘Charity’ is an upright, fragrant, evergreen shrub. It is a medium sized shrub with architectural foliage and gnarly stems. It is grown for its beautiful, large racemes of fragrant lemon-yellow flowers. It likes well drained, fertile soil, in sun or shade. It is best used in a mixed shrub border.
