WELCOME To the January issue of The Listing
Our 101st cover depicts Royston’s magnificent triple commemorative sculpture at the head of the Coombes Hole underpass beside the junction of Melbourn Road and Green Street. Sustrans, the leading UK charity that enables people to travel by foot, bike or public transport, contributed to funding for the town’s Coombes Hole underpass and upgrade of the cycle lane network. As part of this investment, three life-size steel sculptures of local characters were created. The display features a town crier, King James I and classical BRIT award-winner Alison Balsom, making a memorable sight in any weather, but particularly so in the exceptional snow-like hoar frost that carpeted the town one day last winter. sogifted.co.uk Inspirational gifts for every occasion...
Our January issue is full of healthy tips to keep you active this month, from our packed health and beauty pages with tips on staying motivated with your new exercise regime and news of a wide range of fitness activities on offer in the Royston area. Dance, fitness, bootcamps, gym, pilates, personal training, kickboxing, zumba and jazzercise all feature so no excuses... get active this January! Read the articles from three of our vital organisations: Royston Time Bank, the Volunteer Centre and Home-Start. Each one can help you in a variety of ways, offering voluntary work or social opportunities, all designed to keep you feeling connected and cared for in our increasingly isolated society. Not only does volunteering give you a sense of well-being as you give something back to society but it connects you with others, meaning you can make new friends, develop new relationships and keep active. The Time Bank is an organised skills-swap with a social side, allowing you to share your skills and abilties with an appreciative group. Giving works wonders for your mind and body, so make this year your time to get involved in your local community. January wouldn’t be complete without mentioning food.... I have over-indulged throughout December and as everyone who knows me will testify, food is a very important part of my life! Look out for money-off vouchers from local restaurants and our healthy mocktail recipe. February’s issue features our wedding special - please get in touch if this is of interest. Wishing all of our readers a Very Happy New Year

ROYSTON TIME BANK
HEALTH & wELLbEing
When Audrey and her husband first moved from Therfield to Royston ten years ago, she was working and leading quite an independent life. Unfortunately she was made redundant and shortly after she developed AMD, a condition that affects people’s eye sight. Due to this Audrey was no longer able to drive and had to rely on her husband to get around. She also knew very few people in Royston. Because of these factors, Audrey started to feel quite isolated. She felt as if she had lost her independence and wasn’t really able to get out and about to meet new people. She wanted something to keep her occupied and also give her the chance to get to know others in the community. She read an article about the Royston Time Bank and felt that the scheme was just what she was looking for. Time Bank, a project managed by NHCVS, is a vibrant community skills exchange which enables people to share their abilities and knowledge with others in the community whilst earning time credits. They can then use those credits to get help with something they need or learn a new skill. People can offer specific skills such as sewing, DIY, fixing computers or it could just be the ability to befriend, walk a dog or drive someone to the doctors. After joining Time Bank Audrey became part of the Time Bank Knitting group which knits goods to donate to charities and also started to attend the monthly Time Bank Cafe’s which give members the opportunity to get together, share their skills and have a bit of fun. The activities that have taken place range from quizzes to science themed cafes to cake decorating. Audrey said “Time Bank has given me the chance to get to make new friends, become part of the community and feel useful. It has allowed me to carry on using my skills and do the things I enjoy. Before, I didn’t really get to use my baking skills as I didn’t see the point in baking for just me and my husband but since joining this scheme my baking skills have been in high demand and I always make treats for the monthly cafes.” She added “I have enjoyed helping others by doing simple jobs for them such as shopping, and it has also been beneficial for me as I have been able to get help with my computer. I feel that so many people could not only benefit from Time Bank but also get a great deal of enjoyment out of it.” Savita the Time Bank administrator said “The Time Bank is open to everyone and values all skills equally. Time Bank currently operates across North Herts, Stevenage, Royston, Buntingford and the surrounding villages.” She also said “We would like to thank Councillor Tony Hunter and Herts County Council for the support they have given to Royston Time Bank.”
If you would like to find out more or join the Time Bank please visit the royston time www.mytimebank.org.uk bank cafe or contact us on 01462 689405 or at timebank@nhcvs.org.uk.

recycle in 2014
Since North Herts District Council (NHDC) introduced new waste and recycling collections earlier this year, initial results indicate the amount of waste being recycled has increased from below 50% to over 56%. If this trend continues, it would mean 1000 tonnes less going to landfill from North Herts every month. It currently costs Council taxpayers over £100 for every tonne of waste sent to landfill, so NHDC’s new collection service could lead to savings of over £1 million every year on the cost of sending waste to landfill.
Christmas Tree Recycling
Around 250 tonnes of real Christmas trees are thrown out after Christmas in the UK - please remember to recycle yours. Ensure all decorations, nettings, pots and stands are removed - these items do not compost so your tree will not be collected if these items remain on it.
If you live in North Herts District Council areas:
Place your real Christmas tree next to your brown bin for collection. In partnership with local garden centres, we will also be collecting real Christmas trees until 17 January 2014 from • Bickerdikes Garden Centre Norton Road, Letchworth • Tapps Garden Centre Wallington Road, Baldock • Wyevale Garden Centre Cambridge Road, Hitchin
If you live in South Cambridgeshire District Council areas: Real Christmas trees can be cut up into small pieces and put in your green bin or taken to local household recycling centres at Milton and Thriplow for composting.
Boost your immune system to keep colds and flu at bay
By Alison Runham
Try these foods and supplements that claim to help boost your immune system this January. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid):There is no evidence that it prevents colds; but a regular daily dose may reduce how long your infection lasts and its severity. Zinc: Zinc appears to lessen symptoms and speed up recovery, if taken from the start. Sources: wheat germ, eggs, seafood. Garlic: Only one study has shown it prevents a cold or flu; once you’re infected, there’s no proof garlic helps. Leave for 20 minutes after peeling and chopping to activate its immune boosting enzymes. Echinacea: A variety of preparations have been trialled with differing results. Some trials show that Echinacea takers are 30% less likely to develop a cold but there’s little evidence it helps once you’re ill. Glutathione and bioflavonoid: These help to maintain a healthy immune system, although there’s no cold or flu fighting evidence yet. Glutathione sources: watermelon, broccoli, cabbage. Bioflavonoid sources: cherries, green peppers, red onions. Selenium: Low levels of selenium have been linked to developing more severe flu, so maintain healthy levels. Sources: fish, nuts, mushrooms. Saline (salt water): Saline drops and sprays can reduce congestion and remove virus and bacteria particles. HEALTH & wELLbEing

OUT & ABOUT CADS Presents...
robin hood and the babes in the wood If you go down to the woods today... You’d better watch out for the vicious bunnies! Once again CADS are gearing up to present annual family pantomime. Following September’s much acclaimed Little Shop of Horrors, this year’s production is Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood, with all the fun and silliness that goes with panto.
Royston’s
And family pantomime is a very apt description as there are at least nine family links within cast and crew: parent and child, sisters, and husband and wife teams are all represented and even more will be helping come the actual performances. There are both familiar and new faces on and off stage and several people are stepping into roles that they have not experienced before. Once again parents of autistic children are welcome to come along to the dress rehearsal on 19th Jan, to familiarize the children with the unusual noises and sights of the show before coming to the actual performance, and at the performance there will be helpful booklets available. After the last performance there will be the presentation of the Fred Sillence and Lizzie Houghton awards. The former is for outstanding contribution to the performing arts over the past 12 months and the latter is open to those 18 and under who have made an outstanding contribution to youth theatre over the same period. Both are open to anyone from Royston or the surrounding villages. Nominations, with reasons, are welcome and should reach CADS’ secretary, Tamsin Cowley by Friday 17th Jan. Details for nominations can be found on the CADS website. Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood will be performed at Meridian School on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th, Friday 31st January and Sat 1st February. Evening performances are at 7.30pm, with matinees on the Saturdays at 2pm. Tickets are £10 for adults and £7 for children, students and over-60s. Tickets can be booked free online with credit or debit card via the CADS website, www.cadsroyston.org.uk, or by calling 07925 674 967.

All the money raised from the appeal will help the charity provide more free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes. With planning for the 2014 campaign already underway, the local Marie Curie fundraising team are looking to set up a new fundraising group in Royston and have an information meeting on Wednesday 22 January at 10am at Palazzo where you will be able to meet the fundraising team and find out more about the new group. £3000 community fund windfall
The Listing is delighted to announce that Royston and District Community Transport were successful in their bid to secure funding from the Lloyds Bank Community Fund, with a staggering 45% of the total votes in North Hertfordshire. Sincere thanks go to all those who voted and helped this worthwhile organisation, which offers door-to-door transport for people living in Royston and the surrounding villages of North & East Hertfordshire and South Cambridgeshire who are unable to use conventional public transport and do not have the use of a car. The £3000 funds received will go towards a new minibus. Thanks are also extended to Alan Tobin of the British Queen in Meldreth, who kindly made a £245 donation with the proceeds from their carol-singing evening held on December 9th.

royston ladies circle
Royston Ladies Circle has been running for over two years having rechartered in March 2011. It is currently going from strength to strength with 13 members enjoying meeting twice a month. Whilst numbers are strong, there is always room for more. Any lady aged between 18-45 years is invited to come along and get involved. Ladies Circle has had a super year of fun, friendship and laughter, carrying out activities such as a bread making class, a theatre trip, a dance class, a recipe swap evening, a Christmas decoration making class, a visit to a chilli farm, a pamper evening and much more. Future events include a belly dancing class, bowling, bike ride and Segway driving to name a few! There is also the fundraising element. This year we have assisted the Round Table with the Santa sleigh, including running the Melbourn sleigh evening and running the new Litlington evening run. Ladies Circle also ran a quiz night at Meldreth village hall, attracting over 90 people and raising over £900. Requests have been made for funding which we have supported, including donating some money to the Friends of Chernobyl charity so that children visiting Melbourn from Belarus could buy a pair of shoes to take home with them, Home Start and other local causes. Whilst the name is Royston Ladies Circle, the group has attracted members from many surrounding villages such as Bassingbourn, Melbourn, Arrington, Harston and Litlington. We meet every second and third Thursday evening of the month. If you would be interested in getting involved with Ladies Circle, or believe we might be able to help with a fund raising project that you are involved in, then please contact the current Chair, Hannah Paradis on 01763220967.

The Life List: Lessons Learned With age, so they say, comes wisdom. However, there are sometimes lessons you wish you hadn’t learned. 1. When you pull an ugly face, it doesn’t stay with you as the wind changes. Age is going deliver that fate to you anyway. 2. Ailing animals don’t really go to a lovely farm in the country. Goldfish couldn’t live that long either, or change colour while you were at school. 3. Your uncle Bob - the one you really look like - wasn’t really your uncle after all... 4. Pickled onions won’t put hair on your chest, no matter how many you
eat. Similarly, eating crusts won’t give you curly hair. 5. Grandparents weren’t always in dire need of soap and hankies when it came to presents. 6. Grown-ups got scared & sad too. 7. Even teachers didn’t know the answer to everything. 8. There was never a situation where long division or trignometry saved your life. 9. No one would ever love you as unconditionally as your mum and dad. 10. However hard you try, you can’t make weekends, summer holidays, or childhood itself last forever.

Red Onion Soup with Melting Gruyere Croutons Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes
EATS & DRINKS
Kick Start Your New Year at Palazzo We hope you had a lovely Christmas and look forward to welcoming you this January
Ingredients:
After the indulgence and expense of Christmas and 15g butter 650g small red onions, peeled the New Year, this hearty soup is the perfect antidote. and thinly sliced 2 tsp brown sugar Ideal for a warming winter 1 tbsp flour lunch or supper it’s simple 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard to make, tastes delicious 1.2litres beef or vegetable and doesn’t cost a fortune.
• 2 tbsp olive oil • • • • • •
stock
• Few sprigs fresh thyme, plus extra to garnish • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 8 thin slices day old French bread • 75g Gruyere cheese, grated
Tip
If you use stock made up from stock cubes taste the soup before adding any seasoning as some can be quite highly seasoned.
Heat the oil and butter in a large, deep heavy-based saucepan until the butter is sizzling. Add all the sliced onions and cook very gently over a low heat for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Sprinkle over the sugar and cover and cook for a further 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are very soft and golden. Stir in the flour and half the mustard and cook for 1 minute, then gradually stir in the stock. Add the thyme sprigs, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper (see Tip) and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 35-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust the seasoning to taste. Lightly toast the slices of French bread on one side. Spread the untoasted sides with the rest of the mustard and top with the grated Gruyere cheese. Pop under a hot grill for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling. Ladle the soup into warmed bowls and top each with two hot Gruyere croutons. Serve immediately garnished with thyme sprigs.
FREE bottle of house wine

How do you buy your sports shoes? Online, in a discount sports store or because they ‘look good’? If so, then you might be wearing the wrong shoe. We specialise in putting you in the right shoe for your foot and leg type. HEALTH & BEAUTY January 14 • ISSUE 101 EMBRACE IT? OR DISGRACE IT?
Burn up to 600 Calories in each 60 minute total body workout!
January, the time of year when hundreds of us choose to have a fresh fitness and lifestyle regime. New fitness trends, DVDs, classes, gym memberships and New Year resolutions will see us Going for Gold in January and slipping away by Spring! So, in 2014, will you EMBRACE IT? or DISGRACE IT? Let’s face it many of us want to be able to feel great, look healthier, drop a dress size, de-stress, improve our fitness levels, have a greater sense of wellbeing or just look fit! I believe that everyone can enhance their lifestyle through fitness and wellbeing which is why I want YOU to think about whether you are going to embrace it or disgrace it this year.
week £5 FirstFirst week FREE with this ad with this Ad
EMBRACE IT • Finding what keeps you motivated to stay active is key • Try everything you see! The more you enjoy your chosen fitness activity, the higher your chance of keeping going • Go with friends, not only social but you’ll feel commited to a new class or club as you’ll never want to let your friends down! • Whether or not you already have a fitness/well being routine, always take on a fresh challenge with an end goal, great for motivation and refreshing for your mind • Keep it varied for an overall sense of fitness and well being. DISGRACE IT • Don’t over commit, trying to go from zero to hero in a week will just leave you feeling exhausted not exhilarated. • Dreading going to the gym or for a run or whatever activity you’ve chosen will see you giving up before March. Choose your fitness activity wisely • Boredom is not a great motivator. Change one thing about your fitness /activity routine every couple of months to keep you evolving and stopping the rot setting in. This doesn’t have to mean skip your favourite class as any good instructor will change the format regularly - perhaps go outside on your bike instead of in the gym, just a simple change • Everytime you think you don’t want to do your fitness / activity routine, just think how good you always feel after - focus on the result not the process. Use EMBRACE IT or DISGRACE IT rules to keep motivated and to stick with your fitness / lifestyle changes for 2014. Royston has everything on offer from pilates, yoga and dance, to team sports, gym challenges and much much more, there really is no excuse! Diary for Royston
What if your local school decides to have its annual fete on a particular date, only to discover too late that there is a rival event scheduled for the same date? How annoying, but unavoidable because there is currently no easy way for Roystonians to have a calendar view a year or more in advance. This was the observation raised by a number of attendees at a recent Community Breakfast meeting at The Bull Inn. Tony Briar of the Rotary Club of Royston undertook to investigate what could be achieved and, at the following Community Breakfast meeting, demonstrated a workable solution based upon an electronic diary. All present agreed that the system showed great potential. Try it for yourselves at www.roystondiary.info. The idea is that the diary can also be embedded into a club or society’s own website and tailored to suit. For example, the Royston Football Club website could show a version of the diary but with only football fixtures and training sessions included, and yet have this same information available more widely across the rest of the community. These are early days but Tony is keen to drive this idea forward if there is enough interest. Initially the Royston Diary will be co-ordinated and run under the auspices of Royston Rotary Club with a view to handing it on elsewhere once it is running smoothly. If you think that your club, society, church or any other organisation would benefit from this free community diary please email your interest (via The Listing) to info@townhousepublishing. co.uk.

During December members attended the NAWC Christmas Carol Service in Oxford Street, London and the regional Christmas lunch in Welwyn Garden City. We also celebrated the last meeting of 2013 with our Christmas Dinner at the Heath Sports Club where we had a wonderful Christmas meal and disco music to follow. This was a much enjoyed evening to end the year. We are looking forward to 2014 when we celebrate our 40th anniversary. Our first meeting for the year will be on 6 January with a social. Speaker meetings during January will include John Procter will be taking us on a journey to remote Northern Norway to hear about the Sami people; and Janet Bevan will be coming from the Cambridgeshire branch of “Headway” to speak about this charity which aims to improve life for patients after brain injury. New members are always welcome. Why not join one of our meetings held in the Town Hall on Monday evenings which start at 8pm. Thank you for the amazing support from Calling all Runners visitors and volunteers at Royston Tesco recently for funds raised in support of those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The Disasters Emergency Committee (of which the British Red Cross is a member) launched an Emergency Appeal with Tescos nationwide allowing its stores to be used for an emergency collection And Roystonians can feel proud of themselves - Tesco Royston raised over £3000 in one weekend - the highest total in Hertfordshire. Just £6 of the donations collected could buy a 10 litre jerry can people to in crisis Refusing to ignore collect and store clean drinking water; £10 in a bucket can buy a tarpaulin There are lots of ways you can support to make a temporary shelter for those who have been leftthe homeless; and British Red Cross: £20 could buy two hygiene kits for those who lost everything, to prevent the spread of disease. business award for my lingerie
Local lingerie retailer My Lingerie from Buntingford are thrilled to win the Best Newcomer Award at the recent Underlines Best Shop awards. The well-respected industry awards evaluate different types of lingerie businesses jo and paula from throughout the UK such as in lingerie my online and mail order, as well as buntingford traditional retail. Partner Jo Dawson said “It’s a huge compliment to know that the industry has recognised our contribution and the potential of MyLingerie. MyLingerie is a beautiful shop and we take great pride in giving our customers a friendly but professional service and an all round enjoyable shopping experience. The shopping experience and special ambience felt when in the shop were specifically referred to by the judges. Jo went on to say, “We had lots of fun at the awards presentation and with no prior knowledge of the results, it was a fantastic surprise when MyLingerie came out of the winner’s envelope. We are deeply touched by all of the lovely comments and good wishes we have received from everybody since it was announced. Congratulations from all of us at The Listing! Happy New Year!
I hope you all enjoyed ‘the festive season’ and were able to spend some time relaxing with your family and friends. Many self-employed people and small business owners don’t take enough time off to recharge their batteries, so it’s really important to take the opportunity when you can. Christmas and New Year is also a perfect time for reviewing the julian berry past and looking forwards to the future so, with that in mind, here are three business New Year’s Resolutions you may wish to consider:
Look after your customers
Put something in place to make sure you remember to contact all your customers regularly. Don’t know what to say? At the very least, offer them free, useful information, or ask their opinion on how you could serve them even better, every two to three months.
Look after your money
As a learned business expert once told me, “The three most important things in every business are cash, cash and cash. Without cash, even the biggest businesses can’t survive, so have an up-to-date cash flow forecast, spend your money wisely and keep on top of invoicing, ruthlessly chasing bad debts.
Look after yourself
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy claims the old proverb, but it’s worse than that. All work and no play can harm your health, ruin your relationships and drain your determination. Review your work-life balance and remember why you started the business in the first place. Stay focused on your dream, and you might stop it turning into a nightmare! The final word goes to an Area Director of one of our local banks, he asks, “Do you have a trusted advisor with whom you can share ideas and who can share ideas with you? If not, find one! Business can be lonely. Well said – Julian Berry at your service!
Best wishes for a happy and profitable 2014!

Science in action
The children from St Mary RC School in Royston visited Johnson Matthey as part of the Children Challenging Industry Project, a programme aimed at encouraging children’s interest in science and improving their perceptions of the chemical industry. The children were able to see science in the workplace. Says Deborah McGarrity, Royston Site & Community Co-ordinator at Johnson Matthey, “The difficulties of attracting young people into careers in science have been well documented in recent years. From this perspective, I think it is important that schools in our area understand what Johnson Matthey actually does, and how exciting and varied a career in science can be.” Robert Dunbar, Headteacher and St Mary’s was most appreciative of Johnson Matthey support.

news from our schools
A Phantastic Show!
Meridian School’s annual musical production last week was voted a spectacular success by all of the sold-out audiences of the three night run. “What an impressive production; the school should be so proud of the staff and pupils who have taken part.” “Phantom was just the most spectacular production imaginable” “The singing and acting was outstanding and I thought it was great to have the live band, such talent in one school!” Over a quarter of Meridian students threw themselves into the show, taking part in the cast, crew and band; rising to the challenge of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera.” They pulled together in rehearsals and planning over four months that resulted in, amongst many aspects, an illuminated Chandelier that fell and rose from the school hall ceiling with great drama, enchanting scenery, professional props, a highly accomplished band playing actual West End scores, an elegant and refined corps de ballet and a cast that drew the emotions of the audience with them in each and every note. Each and every student gave something of their musical soul to ensure that their performances were of the highest quality, and the audience and students’ experiences were testament to the dedication and talent found at Meridian. They go from strength to strength in their skills over the years, and in their expectations of what they can achieve. Meridian’s Phantom has proved, yet again, that anything is possible on the Meridian stage! ‘’An unforgettable experience which presented real challenges that were met by the enthusiasm of the team. Everyone was proud to have been part of such an awesome production.” Alice Atkins, year 13 “Being in Phantom has been an amazing experience. Everyone involved has worked SO hard and created an incredible show. I already miss it and am still singing the songs. I am so glad my last production was so fantastic!” Chloe Smith, year 13

pizza making lessons
In September and November two year 6 classes at Roysia Middle School received an offer they could not refuse! They were invited by the staff at Palazzo restaurant to receive training on how to make their own pizza. Not only did they get expert advice from the chef on how to handle the bread dough but they also had the opportunity to assemble a pizza matched to their own personal tastes. At the end of the afternoon everyone was bubbling with excitement and loaded down with huge pizzas, balloons and quizzes – not even the miserable weather could dampen their good spirits. All the pupils had the most wonderful time and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Palazzo. Their kindness, generosity and professionalism were overwhelming. The pupils learned so much from the staff. It was a fantastic afternoon and the pizzas were delicious.
EPIC Awards & Royston Arts Festival
Back in September Royston Arts Festival 2013 saw thousands of people visiting sixty events, workshops and exhibitions all round the town. Hertfordshire Life called it ‘an artistic bonanza’ and the Mayor said he’d never seen the town so busy. Because of the tremendously positive response from everyone involved, the organisers decided to enter the festival for the 2014 EPIC AWARDS (England) and more than twenty Royston community groups have already written in backing the festival’s entry. The competition recognises the most innovative and inspiring voluntary arts groups in the UK and Ireland and is run by Voluntary Arts, the national development agency for arts participation. Their top award Tannery - Open Day Advert 25/9/13 09:37 Page 2 is issued to one group in each of the participating nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The shortlist will be announced by the beginning of January and, if the festival reaches the shortlist it will also be entered for the People’s Choice Award, voted for online by members of the public. If you’d like to celebrate the town’s artistic First School community, please visit the festival’s website to see ROYSTON HERTFORDSHIRE if it has reached the shortlist and (if it has!) vote for Royston’s very own community event by clicking on the EPIC AWARDS link: RoystonArtsFestival. In the garden... January
Winter is a fantastic time to appreciate berries in the garden. There are many shrubs that offer a great display of berries during the winter months and also an important source of food for our birds to feast on. Here are just a few of my favourites. Cotoneaster lacteus would be in my top ten. It is a large evergreen shrub with arching branches of matt, dark green, oval leaves. The large clusters of orange- red berries give a fantastic show. Plant it in Variegated Holly Bush an open position, in well drained, fertile soil. I use it in shelterbelt plantings or as an informal hedging plant. Ilex aquifolium ‘Argentea Marginata’ is a variegated female holly. The foliage has a pretty golden margin to the leaf and clusters of red berries. Like all female berrying hollies it will need a male plant close by for pollination. It is great as a specimen plant or as part of a mixed shrub planting scheme in well drained, fertile soil, in an open position. Pyracantha ‘Orange Glow’ as the name suggests produces clusters of orange berries, much loved by the birds. It is a vigorous evergreen shrub with spiny branches. It is useful as security plant on boundary fences and can be trained effectively onto wires. Plant in well drained, fertile soil and the black birds will be for ever grateful. Malus ‘Red Sentinel’ is one of my favourite fruiting crab apples. It is grown for its clusters of glossy, cherry like fruits that mature to bright red and last well into winter. Like all crab apples it produces white blossom in the spring, but its main season is the winter. It is a great specimen tree for the smaller garden. Malus ‘John Downie’ is another very pretty crab apple with a more orange red, elongated fruit. Viburnum rhytidophyllum is a much underrated large, leathery leaved evergreen shrub. It produces small, white tubular flowers in late spring followed by clusters of pretty red berries which persist into the winter ripening to black. It is a bit different and well worth considering for a mixed shrub border. Why not get out this winter and embrace the changing of the seasons?! The University Botanic Garden Cambridge and Anglesey Abbey both have good winter gardens and coffee shops to warm up in afterwards. So wrap up and get out into the garden!

free trees in Royston
Members of Royston in Bloom are pleased to announce that they have been awarded a free community tree pack from the Woodland Trust. Over recent months Royston in Bloom Members have undertaken enhancements on the Royston Town Council owned plantations at Stile Plantation. Volunteers have planted another 30 tree saplings consisting of silver birch, rowan and wild cherry. The trees, all native broadleaved WOODLAND TRUST PLANTING ON species, will grow into flourishing young STILE PLANTATION, ROYSTON trees in as little as 10 years. Royston in Bloom applied for the tree pack from the Woodland Trust to enhance their neighbourhood and enrich the local environment while creating new homes for wildlife. By teaming up with communities the Woodland Trust is working to double our native woodland cover in the UK. Royston in Bloom Members have taken this opportunity to enhance the local environment and help sustain the wealth of wildlife which has taken up occupation in the plantations. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is
misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn
up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just
the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

HOMES & GARDENS
Sowing Time
Now that January is here it’s a perfect time to start sowing seeds in trays and pots. But how do you make sure that yours germinate and produce seedlings and then plants which thrive and grow well? If you buy seed and cuttings compost it’s rarely necessary to sieve it as it has a very fine and even texture. However, if you’re using multi-purpose compost, you’ll need to either break up any lumps carefully with your hands or sieve it. Depending on the types of seeds you have chosen, you will need to sow them at different depths. Some seeds are tiny and are best scattered over the surface. Other seeds are best sown in drills. Once they are in place, in most cases you need to cover them with compost to the required depth. However others germinate best if allowed access to daylight and should be sown on the surface. With these it’s advisable to cover the surface of the tray with cling film to stop it drying out too rapidly. I like to put the seeds in place and then moisten the compost. Place the seed trays in a sink or tray containing about 1cm of water and allow the compost to soak up the water. Once the compost is just moist you should stand the trays in a position where any excess water can drain off. Then, if necessary, put the trays in a heated propagator. When it comes to watering the seeds, use
mains water as water butts may harbour some of the disease-causing organisms which cause damping off, the fatal condition where the seedlings appear to suddenly flop and keel over. Always watch the seed trays carefully and check them regularly to ensure that the compost is adequately moist. Once the majority of the seedlings have appeared, it’s usually not long before you need to prick them out. Generally this is carried out when the first true leaves appear. When the seedling first comes above ground you will see the ‘seed leaves’ which are relatively sturdy looking and rounded in shape. Then above this come the first true leaves which are typical of that particular plant. When pricking out, handle the seedlings very carefully, never by their stems or true leaves, but always by the seed leaves. Before you start to ease them out, make sure that the compost is adequately moist, so that the roots move readily without damage and that you have already prepared pots for transfer. To avoid rotting, always transplant seedlings so that they are at the same depth as they were in the seed tray.
If you find that your seedlings have become rather leggy and drawn, this is usually because they’re not receiving enough natural light; move the trays onto a south or west facing windowsill. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening items including ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’. Choose the veg you’d like to grow and they’re sent to you ready to plant, accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa.
A shopping list for first time sowers: • Good quality seed and cuttings compost. • Some seed half-trays, which are about 5” x 8”. • A heated propagator, a clear propagator lid to go over the trays or a small unheated propagator. • A dibber to make it easy to transplant the seedlings into a new home. • Some small pots into which you can transplant the seedlings.
