WELCOME

CONTENTS

To the July issue of The Listing

The most exciting news this month is the launch of the new community cinema in Royston. The Royston Picture Palace incorporates digital state of the art technology into the 19th Century town hall, creating an exciting cinema experience right here in the town centre. The films are a mix of big box office successes and well-regarded recent releases, and are showing on Friday and Saturday evenings from the end of June. You can book tickets online at www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk or buy from Royston Library. There has been a lot of curiousity and excitement in the town with regards the cinema so we are sure the people of Royston and beyond will support their community cinema wholeheartedly in the weeks, months and years to come. Find out more on page 5. Also this month, retail group Royston Means Business have organised a Royston Summer Rocks event in the town centre on Saturday 6th July. Expect fun for all the family and also look out for the Summer Soul event that afternoon, organised by Ad Hoc Bar and Kitchen, with soulful grooves and funky beats to entertain you into the evening. Our pages bring you news of much much more going on in the local area, plus local businesses, organisations and sports. There is no excuse to stay at home this summer!

“Our Big Gig”

Kitchens Bathrooms Tiles Carpets & Flooring

The Arts Council is funding musical events in England between 11th and 14th July this year, under the banner of “Our Big Gig”. These events are to promote and inspire music in the community as well as increase participation in music and promote social cohesion. Over 300 live musical performances are taking place, including one here in Royston. The Big Band Extravaganza takes place on on Sunday 14th July at The Old Bull Hotel commencing at 12 noon. Participating groups will be:

The Opus 17 Swing Band

Our own Royston based 17 piece big band formed 15 years ago. The main repertoire is traditional big band music from the 40’s. Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and others of the era. The band boasts several current and retired professional musicians together with enthusiastic amateurs. The band often plays at 1940’s events and has authentic “Sun Tan” uniforms as worn by The Glenn Miller Orchestra.

“A personal service to local retail and trade customers”

The Bedford Contemporary Big Band

Is led by Paul Carter, son of the trumpeter Nigel, who played lead trumpet with the BBC Big Band for nearly 40 years. As their name suggests they draw more on modern big band repertoire. On 14th July they will also be fronting two vocalists with the band.

The Big Band of Presdales School, Ware

The girls of Presdales School Big band under the direction of their music tutor Miss Jo Cheetham will open the proceedings on 14th July. They play a mix of modern and traditional big band charts.

Footlights Quartet

A foursome of fabulous ladies who sing your favourite songs in four part harmony harmony. They are all members of the well-respected Phoenix Chorus from Potton. Theirs is guaranteed to be a varied and entertailing performance. Admission to this event is free. Refreshments will be available to purchase from the barbecue. See The Listing what’s on guide for a snapshot of “Our Big Gig” events locally.

COMMUNITY

OUT & ABOUT Royston Picture Palace

© Black Pig

bringing cinema back to royston We are delighted to announce that the Royston Picture Palace opened its doors at the end of June as Royston’s own community cinema. The cinema is located in Royston Town Hall, which has undergone a complete refurbishment courtesy of Royston Town Council, in preparation for its new role. Staffed by volunteers from Royston and the surrounding villages, the cinema features state-of-the-art technology. The Royston Picture Palace is open Fridays and Saturdays, with doors opening at 6.45pm and movies starting at 7.30pm sharp (currently with no advert or trailers). Tickets cost £6.50 for adults and £5.50 for concessions.

So what is ‘community cinema’?

It is cinema run for the community, by the community. What that means in practice is that the cinema is staffed by unpaid volunteers and all the proceeds are ploughed back into the cinema (with any ‘profits’ donated to local good causes). This means that all prices are kept as low as possible whilst continuing to book mainstream films.

The cinema experience

Expect the full cinema experience, complete with popcorn and ice cream! Pretty much the entire Town Hall has been refurbished by Royston Town Council, giving a smart feel to the 19th Century building. This includes a lift for the disabled, double-glazed windows and an air cooling system in the upper hall, new toilets and repainting throughout. Inside, Royston First, funded by Royston’s businesses, has installed custom-built seating, a 7 metre wide retractable screen and a state-ofthe-art digital projection and 17 speaker sound system.

We are confident that Royston will welcome cinema back into the town centre. Having seen first-hand the excellent and dedicated work from our Town Manager, Geraint Burnell, that has gone in behind the scenes for the past three years to bring cinema back into the heart of Royston, it’s exciting to see the Royston Picture Palace ready to open its doors. The town’s excellent eating and drinking establishments are within easy walking distance meaning that you can make a night of it.

Initial Film Schedule Keep up to date at www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk Fri 28th June The Hobbit Sat 29th June Mud Fri 5th July The Great Gatsby Sat 6th July (tbc) Fri 12th July Side Effects Sat 13th July Fast and Furious 6 Sat 19th July Skyfall Sat 20th July Behind the Candelabra Sat 26th & 27th July Man of Steel

Films

Expect to see a broad range of films … especially initially when the organisers are trialling different genres to determine what Roystonians want to see. The films are potentially the same as those screened in the commercial cinema chains, but on average 6-8 weeks behind the general of ‘first’ release. The initial schedule includes the films with the highest attendance figures elsewhere in the UK such as Iron Man 3 and Fast & Furious 6 … whilst at the same time including one or two of the bigger hits from the recent past (such as Skyfall and The Hobbit). These are mixed in with highly regarded releases such as Side Effects and The Place Beyond the Pines.

How to book

Tickets are competitively priced at £6.50 for adults and £5.50 for concessions. The free parking and the fact that many people will walk to the cinema, ensure that a night at Royston Picture Palace is excellent value!

Book online at www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk or pop into Royston Library to buy tickets. You may be able to buy tickets on the door but booking is recommended to avoid disappointment!

How to volunteer

Anyone who wants to help with the cinema should visit the ‘volunteers’ section of the website www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk

WI AM

At this month’s meeting our new president Monica Gray had the unfortunate task of informing the members that our speaker was unable to attend at very short notice. Fortunately a quiz which had been kept in reserve for such an occasion was found and used. Working in groups the members had an enjoyable time discussing and puzzling over the questions which were clues about flower names. At our next month’s meeting we welcome Damien O’Dell to speak about “Adventures of a Ghost Hunter in Herts”. WIAM meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Market Hill Rooms, Royston. Coffee/tea is served from 10.00am with the speaker following on. Visitors are always welcome, call Irene on 01763 249455 for more information.

At our June meeting we were entertained by Paula Dolan who spoke about the many mishaps she had encountered abroad. It all started when she went to Ibiza with her husband, mother and young sons. They went to a shop which was in a house, each room had different things in them and she was nearly accused of shoplifting because she took a large ham into another room. She had many other mishaps on her journeys. Helen Barrett thanked her for a most informative talk and we retired for our Tea and Biscuits. The Competition for a single Rose in a vase was won by Beryl Elliott and the Raffle by Jean Emes. The next meeting is on 11th June when Pamela Sanderson will talk on “The Old Bailey”.This is in the Heritage Hall at 1.45. If you would like to know more about our Institute please contact the President Helen Barrett on 01763 849122.

The star of the television comedy show The Kumars at No 42, best-selling writer, comedian, singer, journalist, producer and actress will talk about her diverse career in The Small World of Meera Syal at Greneway School on Saturday 28 September. The evening will include a question and answer session and book signing. These are just two of around 50 events and exhibitions taking place during this year’s arts festival under the theme A Small World, running from Saturday 21 September to Sunday 29 September. The arts festival theme will be captured at a Small World dropin event at Greneway School (Saturday 28 September) which will include sculptor Paul Bainbridge, music and poetry from Fensong, Bollywood dance workshops and short films from Paul Vernon. Other highlights include a recital by the acclaimed pianist Clare Hammond and a workshop on Routes into the Theatre by Colin Blumenau, who appeared in 150 episodes of The Bill and was artistic director at the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds and currently works as a freelance director and writer. This year’s event will end with the traditional Last Night of the Promsstyle concert with performances from Royston schools, the Royston Youth Choir and the Hertfordshire Music Service’s Senior Windband @ Stevenage on Sunday 29 September. Over the last few years over 40 local organisations including schools, churches and clubs have contributed to the festival. To give everyone the opportunity to benefit from reduced prices, discounted early bird tickets will be available for the main events this year from 1 July to 31 August.

At the start of June Philip Wright entertained us with his lively talk on designing and making hats. His family have been milliners in Luton since 1889 but can probably be traced back much earlier. He brought along a large selection of hats for us to see and also try on! It was a wonderful insight into the millinery world. Our second talk was about ‘Kitchenalia’ by Keith Goodwin, a really interesting history going back hundreds of years on gadgets, cutlery and equipment used in the kitchen. He illustrated his talk with many photos and ‘kitchenalia’ which he collects. At the end of June Stephen Poyser spoke about ‘Beekeeping and the Gardener’. Much of our wildlife is disappearing and he showed us how Tickets and the programme of events will be we can entice bees and other insects into our gardens by the plants we available on the website at grow and thus helping to prevent their decline. www.roystonartsfestival.org from 1st July 2013. decoration, colour & design for your home

New Business Launch

The Ladies Driving Challenge

My name is Linda Jest and I am a female painter and decorator based in Melbourn - something that the Melbourn area definitely has a shortage of! Over the past few years, my husband and I have worked together developing our own properties, and I have had responsibilty for designing the interiors. I have a natural flair for interior decoration and, along with the knowledge I’ve gained over the past number of years, decided to pursue this passion as a career. I attended a specialist training course where I learnt the latest technologies in painting and wallpapering plus the basics in running my own business and am now pleased to offer my interior painting and decorating, combined with my colour and design service, in the local area. I have a great eye for colour and accessories and “how to dress a room”, and can help advise you on your chosen colour schemes and themes. I take great pride in my work, paying a great deal of attention to the detail and the overall effect of the room, and the finished results speak for themselves. My natural flair for interior decoration, together with my experience as a painter/decorator, makes me an ideal choice in the local area for the following decorating services: • All interior decorating • Wallpapering • Painting – ceilings, walls, woodwork – all finishes • Advice on colour schemes • Colour and design advice • Stencil work So for your next decorating project please give me a call at home on 01763 261042 or mobile 0784 645 7797 or if you prefer e-mail me Lindajest@virginmedia.com I offer free competitive quotes.

Welcome to the town centre...

a taste of italy in the town

Una Salumeria Italiana, or Italian Delicatessen, is proud to open its doors on Royston High Street. Avellino’s launched on 1st June and is already proving to be a hit with the people of Royston. Avellino’s is named after a town in Southern Italy, not far from Naples. You may have heard of it in The Sopranos as it’s where the Alfonso, Sabino and Giuseppina fictional character Tony Soprano is from, yet more importantly it’s Russo at Avellino’s where owners Sabino and Giuseppina Russo originate from. The brother and sister team are joined by their father Alfonso Russo who works in the shop during the week. Alfonso has been in catering for decades, and before him, his uncle in Italy had a salumeria in his home village of Prata di Principato Ultra, so fine italian food is in the family! The Russo family have always wanted to open a delicatessen and when they came to live in Royston four years ago, discussed the possibility of doing something in the town. It was just an idea at first but this year the opportunity to enter a vacant shop arose and they decided to take the plunge. Sabino explains: “We have grown to really love this town since moving here from London. We really hope the business has brightened the High Street, as we really feel it deserves a better reputation than it sometimes seems to have. We hope that our story will encourage others to be brave and open new businesses in the town centre that we all love so dearly. We all need to support small businesses!” Sabino knows that in today’s world people are a lot more savvy when it comes to food and believes that the people of Royston deserve and want high quality Italian products as opposed to some of the mediocre tasting mass produced supermarket items. This family business sells only imported items from Italy, some of which the Russo family have sourced ourselves. So far so good, and introducing Royston to new Italian tastes is a success. Sabino extends his thanks to everyone who’s supported Avellino’s so far, and looks forward to welcoming more people over the coming weeks. “Royston appears to have taken to us, so thank you Royston!” Avellino’s, 26a High Street, Royston

Townswomen’s Guild

The Wonderful World of Willow” was presented to us at our June meeting by Sandra Barker, who is a Yeoman Basket maker and Freeman of the City of London. She talked about the fascinating the history of reed and willow and its use in ancient times to make houses, boats and everyday items. Sandra brought along an assortment of examples of her work, including items such as an eel trap, a duck nest as well as many baskets for different applications. Following a demonstration of her craft, Sandra invited us to try for ourselves. It was a very informative and entertaining evening, thoroughly enjoyed by all. Royston Townswomen’s Guild meet on the first Friday of each month and if you would like to know more about our friendly welcoming group do please contact our Chairman, Elizabeth Hollamby on 01763 246347.

Ashwell’s Fight Against Cancer (A.F.A.C) Hampers and Champers Revue

Ashwell’s Fight Against Cancer has been set up by Christine Scholfield to support the lesser known forms of cancer treatment that do not receive the levels of fundraising support available to those with a higher profile. Both events are raising funds in support of developments at Addenbrooke’s Hospital into cancers of the liver and the upper GI tract. Following the success of a ‘Diamond Revue’ in 2010 that raised £2,800, Christine and a group of friends from Ashwell are staging a ‘Hampers and Champers’ Revue on Saturday 20th July at 8pm. This action-packed revue features local artistes performing a series of music, sketches and comedy at Ashwell Village Hall. This entertaining event includes supper and the added attraction of the chance to ‘win a diamond’ by purchasing a glass of champagne – one of which will contain a diamond with a retail value of more than £1000! Dress code? Henley! Striped shirts/jackets/bow tie/boaters/summer dresses. Tickets are £20 per person. For more information and to pre-book, contact Christinescholfield@ hotmail.com or 01462 742136. All profits will go to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in support of the cause.

how to Make an Exhibition of Yourself!

Last week, I went to two very different exhibitions. The first was Royston Open Secrets; the popular annual fun day, with about a hundred local organisations and businesses spread over 5 acres of the Heath – what a great day! And then yesterday I was at Cereals 2013, an agricultural event near Lincoln with almost julian berry 500 exhibitors covering a 150 acre site. Here are a few tips for having a successful show – based on what most Open Secrets exhibitors did very well and many of the international corporations failed to do. The main purpose of any stand is to attract passers-by and engage with them, particularly those who are likely to benefit from whatever it is you are ‘selling’. So know who you’re there to meet, and know what memory you want them to walk way with. Make sure everyone knows the objectives of the day – collecting contact details, handing out leaflets, making sales or booking of future appointments and so on. Then, make sure your stand looks professional and uncluttered, with your benefits message clearly visible from a distance. In your literature and graphics, I recommend you avoid meaningless marketing-speak like ‘solutions provider’, ‘for all your needs’, ‘your expert partner’, ‘independent specialist’ and other phrases designed to make you feel good but that do nothing for your audience. And finally the people. Many stands at Cereals had huddles of chatting salesmen, or were populated by staff drinking coffee, eating sandwiches or checking emails. How does that make the prospect feel? The best stands had no eating, drinking or phoning going on (they did that elsewhere) and simply had well-informed staff who cared about their subject and wanted to share the information – they were happily busy all day. Booking has started for Open Secrets 2014, and if you’d like my full ‘Exhibiting Success’ guide, just email me and I’ll happily send you a copy. www.julianberry.co.uk www.open-secrets.co.uk

Royston Open Secrets 2013

From the moment Andie Harper of BBC Radio Cambridgeshire opened the event with an impassioned speech about the many delights that Royston has to offer, until the final visitors left, the day buzzed with energy and enthusiasm. With a fantastic mix of businesses, community organisations and displays by local dance groups, in addition to a fun dog show and the popular historic vehicle show, Royston Open Secrets 2013 was a huge success with around 2000 people visiting the event over the course of the day. The annual event organised by a committee of local volunteers chaired by Linda Turner is now in its fifth year and getting bigger and better each year. The feedback from visitors and exhibitors has been great. In fact eleven businesses have already signed up for next year! If you run an SG8 Businesses and would like to take advantage of an early-bird booking offer and get a 20% discount off the normal price of ÂŁ100 then get in touch with Linda Turner on Royston 01763 223216. Free advice for rural businesses

Free advice is available in a new scheme to help businesses based in rural areas or those looking to move out of the towns in North and East Hertfordshire. A specialist advisor is now on hand to businesses with fewer than six employees who want to move their business forward or diversify. Help is also available to people considering starting a business or in the process of setting one up. The scheme, set up by North Herts District Council (NHDC) and East Herts District Council (EHDC), is aimed at small businesses seeking help with the specific issues affecting companies based outof-town, or those looking to move into rural areas. Cllr Tom Brindley, NHDC’s portfolio holder for planning, transport and enterprise, said: “The vitality of local businesses is important to everyone who lives and works in North Herts, not just those companies based in our four main towns but throughout the area. I would encourage everyone who owns a small rural business to get in touch and see what advice is available. Paul Phillips, EHC’s Executive member for economic development, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the council to be able to support the various companies that exist throughout the rural areas of our district. We hope to see as many of our rural businesses as possible making full use of this free advice which is particularly welcome in difficult economic times.

To make an appointment to meet with the Rural Business Advisor, Richard Hardiman, call him now on 07711 385220 or email richard.hardiman@eastherts.gov.uk. Meetings can be held at a location to suit.

OFSTED AT ROMAN WAY

Roman Way First School has done it again, impressing the Ofsted inspectors and achieving a very positive report. They were awarded an overall grade of ‘good’, of which they are very proud in view of the more challenging Ofsted criteria. The report acknowledges the staff for their professionalism and dedication in achieving good academic success and the school’s drive and ambition, and also gives due credit to the governors and parents for their strong cooperation and determination in making Roman Way School the school that it is. Emma Edwards, the Head Teacher said, “We are particularly pleased that the inspectors commented that one of our strengths in lessons is that we allow children to think deeply about their learning and that all groups make equally good progress. We are very proud of our children, and the inspectors noted their good understanding of right and wrong which is reflected in their good behaviour and positive attitudes to learning and to each other. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, governors and parents for their invaluable support and the part they have played in achieving this success. It is due to their efforts that our pupils achieve well and enjoy learning, which is reflected in our increasing pupil population.”

meridian BUSINESS TRIP TO MUNICH

Earlier this year, Meridian students travelled with the Business Studies Department to Munich, Germany to explore the international dimension of their AS/A2 studies. The trip was hugely successful with students taking in the culture of a huge European economy and gaining an insight into how major multinational brands and businesses operate. The students visited a major InBev Brewery, responsible for the production and distribution of millions of litres of beer per year – delivered to the UK and all around Europe. Whilst there, the students learnt from a Master Brewer about the beer making process and managed to fit 6 students and three quarters of Mr Humphris in a very, very large beer barrel. The second day of touring took the students around a guided tour of the BMW manufacturing plant. Students took in with awe the amazing automatic production line, with precision robotics producing 1000 5,6 and 7 series BMWs a week, as well as hand crafting 300 Rolls Royce Phantoms per year. The students were truly amazed by the robotic production, watching open mouthed as the robots whizzed around and with laser-guided precision, welded car parts and moved them along to the next station. Very few human beings are actually involved in the production of the “ultimate driving machine” and students felt like they were on set for the Will Smith blockbuster film “I, Robot”… After this wonder-filled morning, we took a guided tour of Dachau Concentration Camp. Students learnt of the shocking conditions and actions that occurred at the oldest German camp, seeing first-hand the chilling “Shower block” where hundreds of thousands of Jewish people were killed during the Nazi regime. Lessons were learned on that bitter cold and snowy day in Germany and many of our students took to heart the sobering reminders of the Nazi legacy. I for one will always remember the horror of watching the video of the Allied Forces entering the camp at the end of the war and discovering the atrocities committed there. Overall, students had a thoroughly enjoyable time, with many hours spent walking through picturesque Munich.

a Summer’s Evening

Since their first collaboration in 2009, musicians James Risdon and Trevor Hughes have established an exciting duo partnership that has seen them perform in venues as diverse as the Handel House Museum, Anglesey Abbey and St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Their repertoire spans the Baroque to the 21st century including several of their own transcriptions. This month, they perform at an evening concert at Royston Methodist Church. JAMES is a recorder player with a growing reputation for virtuosic performances and innovative programmes. In 2011 James was runner-up in the world competition for blind musicians held at the Jan Dale Conservatoire in Prague. His first solo CD is due out later this year. TREVOR has a long experience in the field of church music with his performances on the organs taking in such prestigious venues as Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and the cathedral organs in St. Asaph, Ely, Norwich, and Canterbury. Equally at home in a wide range of musical styles, Trevor has conducted many musicals in the theatre, and played keyboards in a number of West End shows. The Royston Methodist Church is proud to have the opportunity to present Risdon and Hughes’ programme of “Music for a Summers Evening” on Friday evening July 12th at 7.30pm. PURPLE BINS!

New purple bins have appeared in Royston as new improved waste and recycling collections are unveiled. The new service sees more recyclable materials, including plastics, cartons and textiles collected from our homes and is expected to be cost neutral. In fact, depending on the amount by which recycling increases, the improvements could end up saving Council taxpayers thousand of pounds a year. Cllr Peter Burt, NHDC’s portfolio for waste, recycling and environment, explains: “We had to make some changes to our waste and recycling service due to new rules which prevent cardboard going in the brown bins for composting. “We have used this as an opportunity to make a number of other improvements to the service which make it even easier for people to recycle more. By doing this we will end up sending less to landfill, controlling the growing cost of waste disposal and protecting the environment.” The new bins have been delivered by North Herts District Council (NHDC) to houses over the past month six weeks. • The PURPLE bin will be the one to use for general waste. • The GREY/BLACK bin will become a recycling bin. Plastic food and drink packaging (not plastic bags), cartons, glass, tins, cans, cardboard and textiles. Textiles placed at the very top of the grey recycling bin in a plastic bag will also be collected. Plastic bags are not otherwise suitable for this bin. • The BLUE box takes paper • The BROWN bin will continue to be used for garden waste and food waste (but no longer cardboard) Managing food waste will also be much easier with new kitchen caddies. NHDC provides each home with compostable liners for the caddies so that taking food waste to the brown bin will be more straightforward. Your collection day and collection week is not changing. Recycling and Rubbish will still be collected on the usual alternate weeks The NHDC website is at www.north-herts.gov.uk. Anyone who has further queries about the new service can email service@north-herts.gov.uk ask via Twitter using #NHDCbins, or call 01462 474000. People living in flats will see a new recycling service introduced later in the year.

RHAG attends Open Secrets

It’s no secret that Royston Hospital Action Group (RHAG) is campaigning for a community hospital facility as part of a vision for whole community health and social care using the hospital site. At our stand at Royston’s Open Secrets event on the Heath last Sunday we listened to the views of visitors. What we have learned over more than a year now from the people of Royston and area is that they highly value local health services like outpatients, physiotherapy and NHS nursed beds as well as a care home. The hospital site can provide all this. With creativity on the part of the NHS, these and other services can be sited together with GPs and community services. Thanks to the efforts of RHAG, the Friends of Royston Hospital and the thousands of local people who support the hospital, the NHS is now pausing to consider plans for the town Hospital site and we are very encouraged by this news. It was also recently announced that NHS Property Services (Propco) intended to meet us soon and we welcome this. We will convey to them the strength of local feeling for whole community health and social care using the hospital site. The community spirit of Royston and district is no longer an “open secret” going back more than a hundred and fifty years: it is time that it is fully recognised! We will be posting updates and seeking feedback from everyone on our website www.saveroystonhospital.co.uk

In the garden... July

Horticulturalist Richard Arnott recommends seasonal plants for your garden. Richard lives in Melbourn with his family where he runs his garden design and build company, Garden Design Solutions. The garden is really alive with activity now and summer is well and truly here. Spring trees, shrubs and perennials have begun to fade and now is the time for the summer plants to give a good performance. There is so much to enjoy. Climbing roses come into their own as summer progresses. The key thing with climbing plants is to give them a structure to grow on and keep tying the new growth in. I like to use galvanised wire and vine eyes for training on a house. Rosa ‘Madame Alfred Carriere’ is a beautiful classic climbing rose bred around 1879. Its white flowers emerge from pale pink buds to give good scent and continuous blooms. I have it trained over my cottage door and it is now filling the space nicely. Another favourite climbing rose is Rosa ‘Madame Gregoire Staechelin’. It has long pointed pink buds that open to give ruffled deep pearl pink flowers. The flowers are large and the scent is sweet. It makes a great table decoration for summer parties. Rosa ‘Iceberg’ is another sweetly scented white climber that is vigorous and will fill a space quickly. Most climbing roses have thorns but for something different why not try Rosa ‘Zephirine Drouhin’. It has pink semi-double, very fragrant flowers that keep coming with a little dead heading of course. It is very unusual for a climbing rose to be thornless so makes it ideal for a pergola or arch in a child-friendly garden. All roses like fertile soil and will benefit from a feed of bone meal and well rotted manure in the spring. I like to dead head the roses mentioned above to encourage repeat flowers and you can spray for black spot and aphids too. As climbing plants they want to grow up and this can leave bare legs lower down. Why not try growing a clematis up the legs such as white flowering Clematis ‘Henryi’ or the lovely pink www.thinkgardenthinkrichard.co.uk Clematis ‘Comtasse de Bouchard’.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is

misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn

up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just

the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Home Grown Herbs

HOMES & GARDENS

by Pippa Greenwood

There’s a really reliable, easy, low-cost and low-effort way to add some zing to your meals; home-grown herbs. Many herbs are simple to raise from seed and if you start sowing now you should be able to have a plentiful supply of fresh, tasty herbs to add to salads, sandwiches, stews and stir-fries for months to come. All you need is a sunny window sill or balcony, or a well-drained, sunny spot in your garden, so why not sow a few pots and brighten up your cooking? First, find some good quality multi-purpose compost, your chosen herb seeds and some pots. Good-quality compost is well worth the little bit extra you need to pay. The style of pot is up to you – you may want to choose a classic Mediterranean feel with terracotta, or a stylish modern look, or perhaps a good-looking plastic planter for longevity and light-weight characteristics that make it better for a balcony and easier to move about too. Whatever style you choose, bear in mind that plenty of drainage is essential, and that the smaller herbs do not need a deep root run, so there is no need for a very tall planter or pot. It is best to grow each type of herb in its own individual pot, so buy a selection of pots with a minimum diameter of 8cm. Once you have your pot to hand, put a broken flower pot or other drainage material in the base and then fill with good quality compost to within 1cm of the rim of the pot and firm it down, not too aggressively, but enough to ensure that there’s no subsidence later on. With large seeds such as coriander, position the seeds evenly on the compost surface. Sprinkle smaller seed thinly. The seeds need to be covered with compost so use your finger or a dibber (an old ballpoint pen or pencil will do) to gently press the seed in to the very surface of the compost and then drizzle more compost on top to the depth stated on the packet of seed. Water the compost thoroughly either carefully from above using a watering can with rose attached, or by standing the pot in a saucer of water for a few minutes until the compost surface is just moist. The advantage of watering from below is that you are less likely to disturb the seeds.

The seeds generally germinate quite quickly and often within just a week or two you’ll have lots of tiny herbs. For shorterlived herbs, such as coriander and basil its worth sowing in succession. All this means is that you need to use a small pot full of seed every few weeks, rather than sowing the whole packet in one go. This will give you a near constant supply of herbs and if you look at the number of seeds per packet you will soon see what amazing value they are. Once the herbs are up and growing strongly you can start to harvest them. Use sharp scissors or a sharp knife to cut off what you need; this way you’ll minimise damage to the growing plants and so help to keep them cropping for longer. As long as you keep the pots adequately watered, ideally by watering from the base, they should last for several weeks or months but make sure that the compost is not too wet or else your herb pots won’t last long. These plants are mostly of Mediterranean origin and hate wet feet. If at any stage you find that you’re not eating them fast enough and have an excess of herby foliage, store some for later use. Ice cubes give you a really great fresh-herb taste off-season. Just half fill the sections in an ice-cube tray with water. Add chopped fresh herbs to each section and top up with water. Label the tray as chopped herbs in ice can be difficult to identify. The attractive herb-filled ice cubes can then simply be popped whole in to stews and casseroles as and when you need them.
