get on yer bike.... in royston! WOMEN’S CYCLING IS A BREEZE
Cycling has long been seen as the preserve of the MAMIL (middle-aged-manin-lycra) but this is no longer the case. Women’s cycling is seeing a real growth spurt at the moment and hopefully with the inaugural Women’s Tour of Britain this year and the Tour de France on our doorstep we will see more women taking to the saddle. “When I started cycling a few years ago it was very rare to pass another female cyclist on my training rides, these days it’s rare not to pass several and they’re often seen riding amongst the male dominated groups and keeping up with the men and sometimes, overtaking them.” says Alice Barnes. Cycling is an amazing sport for keeping fit, it’s low impact and accessible to all. So why have women stayed off their bikes until now? One of the most common reasons cited by women is feeling unsafe in traffic or lacking confidence in tackling busy roads and junctions. To help deal with these aspects British Cycling and SkyRide created Breeze bike rides. Breeze offers free local rides (around the country) run by women for women. Some are on-road, some off-road but all are aimed at making women feel safe and confident on their bikes. In Royston we have two Breeze champions (ride leaders): Alice Barnes from Great Fit and Gemma Burge from Royston Leisure Centre. Several others ladies have recently trained as assistant leaders, so Royston Breeze is hoping to enable more rides to happen with the increase in leader availability. All the leaders are volunteers and give up their time to run and administrate the rides. As well as the Breeze rides there are now women-only sportives around the country, the most popular of which is the Cycletta which is championed by Victoria Pendleton. The Cycletta rides are well supported and marshaled with activities for the children and dads while the mums can go and ride. So what are you waiting for – get on yer bike!
INSPIRED BY THE TOUR - HAVE A GO YOURSELF!
Back in the depths of last winter, a group of keen local cyclists got together over a curry to discuss the possibility of meeting regularly to ride and so the idea of Royston Cycling Club was born. After an inaugural meeting to share ideas a committee was elected to get things properly set up. Club rides have been taking place on the roads around Royston every Sunday since the beginning of the year, usually split between 2 groups of different abilities. The aim is to ride for about 2 hours covering 25 miles for the steadier riders and more for those who are speedier on two wheels! If you like statistics, average speeds are roughly 13 and 15 miles-an-hour respectively, although faster riders are going out too, which is great; they are sent off separately so everyone is accommodated. The club meets from 8.45am on Sundays outside Mica hardware on the Market Square and leaves promptly at 9am. The ethos of the Club is to encourage adults to get out and ride – it’s not competitive. If you’d like to know more, check out the club’s website - www.roystoncc.co.uk . There you’ll find some Ride Guidelines which cover the way they approach riding or if you have specific questions send them an email: roystoncc@hotmail.com . The club also has a Facebook page (search for Royston Cycling Club). Anyone interested is welcome to go for a ride with them before deciding whether to join.

ROCKETING TO SUCCESS
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club was formed over 30 years ago to promote the sport of BMX Racing in the area around Royston. Over the years, the Club has attracted members from across East Anglia and is widely recognised as one of the friendliest clubs in the country. The clubs race track is in Burns Road, Royston, which is easily accessible from the A505 Royston bypass. The club has a proud history of developing top riders and many of the current membership will be battling it out this year at all levels including the World Championships in Holland at the end of July. The clubs track was completely rebuilt in early 2013 with funding from the Sport England Inspire Fund and North Herts District Council so that it meets the current standards set down by British Cycling, the sport’s governing body, and now always provides close racing, whatever the weather. The Royston Rockets have qualified to be part of British Cycling’s Go-Ride Club Development Programme aimed at improving both young riders and clubs and focuses on volunteers and young members – improving coaching standards and increasing the number of young riders with access to coaching activities. Every Tuesday throughout the summer months (late April to early MISSING September) the Rockets run practice evenings and during the summer Our little black and white cat, Kara, holidays a full race series which is based more on a riders ability rather went missing from Elbourn Way, than their age. This is an ideal opportunity for new riders to learn more about the sport of BMX racing and for the more experienced riders to Bassingbourn on Saturday 3rd May practice their skills—and pass them onto new members. HEROES AND VILLAINS - CERAMIC PLAQUES TRAIL
A UNIQUE town trail of heroes and villains is to be created for this year’s Royston Arts Festival, organised by Creative Royston. The trail will see ceramic plaques depicting some of Royston’s historic characters placed on selected buildings around the town. Creative Royston chairman Graham Palmer said: “The art trail will capture this year’s theme of Heroes and Villains and will cover a range of people from witches to war heroes.” There will be about 15 ceramic plaques on buildings around the town which will include the Town Hall, Market Hill Rooms and the Royston Methodist Church. Each plaque has been designed by artist Liz Beardwell after research by members of the Royston Local History Society and the Royston & District Museum. Students from Royston schools have then taken the designs and interpreted them in their own way. The tiles will be produced by Royston company, Glazed Creations.
EARLY BIRD TICKETS FOR ROYSTON ARTS FESTIVAL
Around 50 events and exhibitions taking place during this year’s arts festival, running from Friday 19 September to Sunday 28 September. Another highlight will be the return to Royston of its most famous musical hero, the world-renowned trumpet player Alison Balsom, who be taking part in a one-off ‘conversation-with’ event (supported by Curwen’s). She will talk about her rise to classical stardom, ranging from her roots playing trumpet while attending Greneway and Meridian Schools to becoming the 2013 Gramophone Artist of the Year and her flourishing international career. Indeed, one of her last concerts before attending the Arts Festival event will be at the Hollywood Bowl. As part of the event, Alison will take a student from the Royston Music School THE THEME FOR THIS through a short masterclass. Alison is president of Creative Royston and patron of YEAR’S ARTS FESTIVAL Brass for Africa, and all profits from the event will be donated to the charity which is IS HEROES AND VILLAINS supporting a life-changing music programme for disadvantaged children. Her appearance at the Arts Festival comes just before she begins a nation-wide tour to promote the release of her new album Alison Balsom: The Trumpet Sings. WORLD-RENOWNED TRUMPET PLAYER ALISON BALSOM MAKES A WELCOME RETURN TO THE SEPTEMBER FESTIVAL
The event will be taking place at Greneway School on Saturday 27 September at 3pm.
Other highlights will include a Comedy Night at the Picture Palace featuring Scotland’s funniest newcomer Iain Stirling, described by GQ as “one of the best joke writers on the circuit”, and Letchworth’s own HowardRead. As part of the festival Creative Royston has asked Meridian School performing arts students to create a storytelling show for children. The students will explore the lives of Royston’s heroes and villains using the skills learned from attending a workshop at the National Theatre given by those who created the puppetry for War Horse. The storytelling will be taking place at Tannery Drift School on Saturday 20 September at 2pm and 4pm. Meanwhile, the first schools in Royston have been creating highly individual strings of bunting which will be displayed around the town and the middle schools will have artwork on display at the museum. Over recent years more than 40 local organisations including schools, churches and clubs have contributed to the festival. This year’s drama is provided by the Royston-based Corvus Amateur With the holiday season fast approaching, let us take the stresses, Drama Society (Cads) with an ambitious production of The Fosdyke Saga. strains and tiredness out of your trip to the airport.

AUDIO VISUAL SERVICES MADE SIMPLE
T-AV Services is a new Audio Visual Company for 2014 set up by Tommy Verleg who lives in Reed; he is looking forward to becoming a part of the community of the very industrious and creative small businesses that are so much a feature of this area. Many people are a bit confused about what “AV” actually is – Tommy’s wife calls it “wires and stuff” – but Tommy can deal with something as simple as fitting a TV screen in a Doctors surgery, providing a PA system for a wedding or special event, installing a projector and screen into a classroom or even advising on, supplying and installing video /audio conferencing systems into your boardroom. He’d love to design and build a music studio as music is his passion! Recently he travelled to Belgium to support a local band with their on stage sound. Tommy also offer various packages for maintenance and advice - so like one of his now regular clients - you may already have a sound or AV system but need somebody to come in and iron out the bugs and then keep an eye on it to make sure things stay in good shape and working for when your clients need them. Tommy is an experienced AV Engineer who has worked in some of the most prestigious situations globally including embassies and top hotels and can count famous clothes designers, TV personalities and even Sheiks as clients. He worked freelance in Dubai on large concerts and was engineering manager at the Grand Hyatt during its opening years. In the UK Tommy worked for a Hertford company but he is now a father and decided that running his own business made sense as it allows him to structure his time around family life. He knows AV can be daunting and his aim is to make your life easier by offering you a polite and T-AV-SERVICES professional service with a friendly “can do” attitude and good technical know-how. He wants to develop strong and lasting relationships with clients who trust him and so far his repeat business ratio LIVE EVENTS is impressive. One of his latest clients says: Thanks so much for sorting that all out for us. We are SUPPLY really pleased that it is all working again and glad to have found someone like you that we can call on INSTALLATION in the future!! THANK YOU FOR GREAT DAFFODIL APPEAL SUPPORT
Thank you – that’s the message from Royston Lions Club following an amazing response to this year’s Great Daffodil Appeal. In partnership with Marie Curie Cancer Care, members of the Lions Club collected at Tesco in March to help provide free local nursing care to terminally ill patients in their own homes and Marie Curie hospices. Lions Club president, Keith Collard says: “Thanks to the generosity of local people we collected £825. Every penny collected by Lions Clubs goes direct to good causes as our membership fees cover any administration costs. This means our Daffodil collection will help fund over 40 hours of hands-on nursing care within our area. We are proud to be at the heart of the community, and our partnership with Marie Curie demonstrates how Lions Clubs offer vital support for local people”. The Great Daffodil Appeal has huge public support and has raised more than £70 million since 1986. Marie Curie Cancer Care chose Lions Clubs in Britain & Ireland to be its first official partner for the Great Daffodil Appeal last year to help raise an additional £1 million.

At the June meeting Keith Baldwin entertained us with tales of the ageing process. He had noticed that Doctors, Policemen, Nurses etc. were getting younger. He had been a soldier and a Policeman, ending his career as a Superintendent. He said you must keep your brain going, and don’t always say no. He told some very funny stories which had most of us laughing. We had some Shakespeare and a poem by Pam Ayres. He finished by telling us that “The first half of your life you are told what to do and the second what you should have done”! The first prize in The Raffle was won by Anne Harrison and the competition by Gladys Pearson. Our next meeting is on July 10th which is a do it yourself evening, when we entertain ourselves.
We meet on the Ground floor of the Heritage Hall at 1.45pm until 4pm. If you would like more information about our institute contact our President Helen Barrett on 01763 849122. Preventative Dentistry

FIVE ON-LINE MARKETING TIPS
This month I’d like to share five brilliant nuggets of information, that I recently learnt at a conference, on how to make your online marketing really effective. Content is king All the delegates I spoke to agreed that content is king – whether you are talking about a website, a blog entry, an advert or even a simple tweet, the words matter! What are you doing? One speaker suggested that online marketing (and websites in particular) should only do one of four different things: entertain, inspire, educate or convince. Thinking about it, that makes complete sense – which one will your website do? What’s in it for me? Another speaker said that before you start to write, you should think about your OVP – your Online Value Proposition. This is a specific explanation of what your audience wants from you – what question they need answering, what problem they need solving, what need they want satisfying – and how it will be answered/solved/satisfied with your website/blogs/tweets. Which ones might be appropriate for your customers and your business? Deliver value Once you have a clear idea of what your audience wants, work out how deliver that answer with real value – everything you do needs to have high relevance to your audience and high differentiation from your competitors. Does your online marketing grab your audience’s attention with something attractive enough to stop them moving on to something else? Spread the word Finally, whatever you put out online, give your audience a reason to care and a reason to share. Because if they care, they’ll read it and want more, and if they share with their friends or their followers, even more people will read it and want more of what you can offer. Work on these five during July and then in August’s The Listing, I’ll show you how to pull it all together. Good luck! #killerautumncampaign

ROYSIA WOMEN’S CLUB
Our June meetings started with an afternoon Mystery Trip to Jordan’s Mill near Biggleswade. We had a guided tour of the old working flour mill, the lovely wild flower and vegetable gardens along the banks of the Rriver Ivel. We ended the tour in the Mill Store and Riverside café with a wonderful afternoon tea. A much enjoyed visit! We then had three speaker meetings: “A Year in the Life of a Celebrity” by Eve Regelous; “After the Yarn” by the Spinning Lady, Celia Gwynn. Her last talk was about the spinning process and on this visit she explained what happens to the yarn after spinning. Our last speaker was Keith Truman who recounted his “Experiences as an Olympic Games Maker”, a fascinating insight into his part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. In July we will be organising a Tombola at one of our Social evenings, a Coffee Morning at a member’s house and a Sponsored Walk round Royston in aid of our charity. This year we are fund raising for Headway in Cambridge, a charity providing specialist services and support to people with an acquired brain injury and their families in Cambridgeshire. New members are always welcome. Why not join one of our meetings held in the Town Hall on Monday evenings which start at 8pm. Speaker meetings end at 10pm and Social Evenings at 9.30pm. For further details about Roysia Women’s Club please contact Wendy Pearce 01763-231381 or Mavis Ingle 01763-222524 or email: roysia10@yahoo.co.uk.

MYTHICAL MAZE
WARRIOR TRAINING
Icknield Walk pupils Cameron and Jessica (year 3) have written about their trip to Celtic Harmony... “Year 3 have been learning about the Celts. We went on a trip to Celtic Harmony. It is a camp in the woods with round houses and special plants, like herbs. We all wore shawls and robes to make us look like Celts. We walked through the gates and pretended to be in a time tunnel to take us through to Celtic times. First we had our faces painted with blue face paint, the Celts used the Woad to make blue face paint to make them look scary for war. Next we used string and yellow and red dye to make coloured bracelets. We did weaving, grinding wheat to make flour, making dough, visiting the herb spiral. We saw all sorts of herbs and they smelt beautiful. We went to the Celtic trading post and used Celtic money to buy things. One of the best bits was the warrior training. We followed the three commands, forward, halt and charge. We pretended to fight the Romans. This was a really good trip and we would recommend a visit to Celtic Harmony because it was good fun and we learned a lot.”
“On 12th July, Royston Library will be hosting the countywide launch of the Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme is “Mythical Maze”. Storytelling and craft activities will be taking place in the library between 11am and 3pm and children of all ages will have the opportunity to sign up for the challenge and will be entered into a prize draw to win tickets for Willows Farm or Royston Cave. “
MERIDIAN’S ATHLETES DOMINATE
Meridian’s athletes have come away with three out of four league titles in the Stevenage and North Herts Athletics league. The athletes are now focused on preparing for the District Championships which will be held at Ridlins Athletics Stadium, Stevenage on the 25th June when Meridian and Greneway schools combine for the Grand Prix Trophy.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is
misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn
up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just
the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. HOMES & GARDENS
HOME & INTERIORS: DOUBLE-UP YOUR SPACE
When you have run out of space and it’s not possible to extend, the time has come to think creatively. With the right approach, you may even be able to make two rooms out of one. Had a new baby? Children growing up? Started working from home? Every year it seems like there’s more pressure on our living space. And while it’s not always possible to move up the property ladder to a ten-bedroom mansion, there is always a way to make your current property work better for you. It’s called doublingup – and it’s all about giving your home a new lease of life with some thoughtful rearrangements and careful additions, resulting in multifunctional rooms that are entirely practical and yet also utterly stylish. Take a long, hard look at every room in your home and, even in the smallest of apartments, it will soon be possible to see which spaces can be modified so as to serve more than one purpose. We’re not talking about expensive extensions or complex loft conversions, but simply about making the most of what you’ve already got. Like adding a dining area to a kitchen, a home office in a bedroom or a hideaway guest bed in a living room.
The trick is to forget your preconceptions about where you live and be creative with the space. To get the most out of every inch (vital when you need to double up on what you have), foldaway furniture is a great option to start with, whether it’s a bed, a desk or a dining table and chairs. Next, make the most of any free wall. Peg rails and hanging rails, hooks and shelves – from high above your head to fitted across an alcove, this can be incredibly useful storage. Think high: a raised child’s bed with space beneath for a desk, sofa or play area, for example. Or could you even build a mezzanine sleeping or working space? And think low: slide a truckle bed under a permanent one, or tuck stools under a small table and magically create an intimate dining area. It’s a lateral-thinking approach that’s quick, easy and inexpensive, and that will make your home as functional and as good-looking as you could ever want, no matter what changes come your way in the future.

No room to sit down and eat? Turn a small kitchen into a kitchen/diner with a foldaway table and chairs. The table is attached to a wall with dowels, while the chairs can be hung on a wall hook, nicely out of the way.
Calligaris Quadro white lacquered bar table, £111; Calligaris Olivia solid wood folding chairs in wenge or beech, £80 each; all Lime Modern Living, 01892 512611; www.limemodernliving.co.uk.
By raising a child’s bed you create two rooms: one for sleeping, and one below for playing, studying, relaxing or for sleepovers. The same goes with an adult bedroom – if you have high enough ceilings, consider building a mezzanine sleeping space, leaving room underneath to use however you wish.
