WELCOME To the March issue of The Listing Out and about this month, we recommend enjoying a spring walk and Sunday lunch out at one of our many great local pubs. Our Sunday Roast feature on page 16 gives you some great ideas of where to try, with carveries, roasts of the day, meats from local butchers and even a picnic option! We hope this will give you inspiration to eat local, share Sundays with friends, and all in good time for Mother’s Day at the end of March. Shopping-wise, we have been talking to the businesses on Angel Pavement in Royston, and are pleased to showcase what this small yet busy area of Royston has to offer. The Melbourn Hub opened its doors in February offering a public facility for the village. There is a bright and lively café, meeting rooms, library, the Parish Council Office, public access computers and free wi-fi. We wish this valuable resource every success and are sure it will be an asset to the community. Finally, read about two excellent organisations that find homes for unwanted pets. We have highlighted two gorgeous dogs who are looking for a new home - perhaps you can help? With best wishes

The Moon Man (U) Family/Animation
Starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth as Eric Lomax and the brilliant Jeremy Irvine as the younger Lomax. As one of thousands of Allied prisoners of war forced to work on the construction of the Thai/Burma railway during WW2, Lomax is left traumatised and shut off from the world. Years later, he meets a beautiful woman on a train and falls in love. She determines determined to rid Eric of his demons. Another chance to see this Award winning animation. Fearless optimist Anna teams up with Kristoff in an epic journey, under Everest-like conditions. Our heroes team with an hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter in this latest Disney masterpiece. An extremely powerful movie to commemorate International Woman’s Day. The Patience Stone is based on an old Persian fable about a stone to which one can confide all one’s problems and worries. In this instance the ‘stone’ is actually an Afghan man, reduced to a vegetative state by the war. His wife uses his inability to comprehend and talk back to tell him things that she would not dare to say otherwise. From acclaimed Director Steve McQueen, this multi award winning masterpiece is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity.
Llewyn Davis is an intimate, well-executed, and honest slice of life. It features a humanistic, heartfelt performance by Oscar Isaac as folk singer Llewyn Davis, arresting cinematography, and a sharp, tight-fisted script by the Coen brothers, who also directed. The setting is Greenwich Village in the early sixties, Llewyn has no home, drifting from gig to gig and crashing on couch after couch as a matter of design. Also starring are Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake. Perhaps the best Coen work since Fargo? Directed by Martin Scorcese and starring crowd favourite Leonardo DiCaprio with Jonah Hill in perhaps his best role to date, The Wolf of Wall Street is offbeat and based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, following his rise to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. A clever, clever film and a ‘must see’.
A stunning look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. From the powerful play written by Tracy Letts - which won the Pulitzer Prize. The acting throughout is quite magnificent - in particular Merryl Streep and Julia Roberts are at their very best.

Based on Tom Clancey’s best-selling books, Chris Pine is the latest to take the lead as Jack Ryan. It’s an old fashioned action thriller with a good cast and lots of great moments. Directed and starring Sir Kenneth Branagh it also features Keira Knightley and Kevin Costner giving a performance that makes you recall why he has always been a fascinating actor.

Shop Built around 1960, Angel Pavement is a pedestrianised shopping area between the High Street and Market Hill in Royston, which nowadays is home to a number of vibrant businesses in the town. To enable the development to proceed, two of the town’s ancient hostelries had been demolished. One of them at the Market Hill end was the Red Lion and the other, which had been located on the High Street frontage was the Angel, a haunt very popular with the American airmen who were stationed around Royston during the 1939-45 conflict. Sitting on the committee, Councillor F. John Smith remembered a novel by J.B. Priestley called “Angel Pavement”, a story about a similar street in the City of London. He was surprised and pleased when his suggestion was adopted.

Family Roast Dinner for Mother’s Day
Selection of meats available. Served with duck fat roasted potatoes, root vegetables, yorkshire pudding and homemade gravy
EASY LAMB ROGAN DHANSAK Serves 4-6
Ingredients:
• 800g diced leg of lamb or lamb steaks • 3 whole peppers, red, green, yellow, sliced. • 1 chopped and diced onion • 2 carrots peeled and finely diced • 2 sticks of celery chopped and finely diced • 2 jars of Rogan Josh sauce (recommend Loyd Grosman) • Half a teacup of dried red lentils • 2 – 4 whole red chillies sliced • Bunch of fresh coriander • Olive oil
Ready in 4 hours Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas Mark 2. Add a splash of olive oil to a frying pan and cook the onions, carrot and celery until they take on a bit of colour, then put these into a large casserole pot. In the same pan put about half the diced lamb and fry until sealed, then put into casserole pot, repeat with the rest of the lamb. Fry the peppers for a couple of minutes, then put them into casserole pot with a pinch of salt and a good grind of pepper. Add the chillies to taste – 4 chillies will give a medium heat but use fewer chillies and remove the seeds if you don’t like it too hot. Pour in the two jars of Rogan Josh, then add a bit of water to the jars, put the lid back on and shake. Chop half the coriander and add to the pot with the liquid from the jars and stir thoroughly. You need the casserole pot filled to near the top, so add water if necessary. Don’t worry if it looks a bit watery, the lentils at the end will thicken it all up. Put into the oven, giving it a stir after about 2 hours. After 3.5 hours sprinkle over lentils and stir
• Salt and pepper • For serving, naan bread and sour cream
6 in. Put back into the oven for another 40 minutes.
Just before serving sprinkle the rest of the
7 fresh coriander on top and then serve with naan bread, and sour cream.

The Perfect Sunday Roast The GREAT British Sunday Roast: A tradition explained. The Sunday Roast is a traditional British main meal, consisting of roasted meat together with accompaniments. Other names for this meal are Sunday dinner, Sunday lunch, Roast dinner, and Sunday joint. The traditional Sunday roast has been traced back to its roots in Yorkshire, during the Industrial Revolution. It is believed this tradition arose because the meat could be left in the oven to cook before church on a Sunday morning, and it would be ready when the family arrived home at lunchtime. Typical meats used for a Sunday roast are beef, chicken, lamb or pork, although seasonally duck, goose, gammon, turkey or other game may be used. Recently, vegetarian alternatives such as Quorn or Nut Roast have also become available. These are some of the common traditional accompaniments to various meats (although many people combine different types of accompaniments, or mix and match foods): Roast Beef — served with Yorkshire pudding, horseradish mustard as relishes. In Yorkshire rings of fresh onion in vinegar are also served. In Scotland Neaps & Tatties are served (potatoes and turnips) and also Skirled, which is an oat based accompaniment. Roast Pork — served with crackling and sage and onion stuffing; apple sauce or baked apples and English Mustard as relishes. Roast Lamb - is traditional with mint sauce or redcurrant jelly. Although more recently the trend for garlic and rosemary has also become a staple. Roast Chicken - served with pigs in blankets (chipolata sausages wrapped in bacon), bread sauce and redcurrant jelly.
Roasts have been given many fresh and new make-overs by recent Chefs/ Cook books, but the basics are still the same. They are normally served with a range of boiled and roast seasonal and regional vegetables. The Sunday Roast is perhaps one of the last meals where this tradition survives. Also, we must not forget the gravy, made from stock, wine, vegetable waters and left over juices from the meat. Sometimes, the left-over meat was used to make Shepherd’s Pie (Lamb) or Cottage Pie (Beef), or if there are vegetables left, then a bubble and squeak with cold cuts, would make many a Monday night supper. Sunday Roast in pubs and restaurants Many pubs in Britain serving food have a special “Sunday menu” that features a Sunday Roast, usually with a variety of meats available, and this is often cheaper than the normal menu. We all have our memories of the perfect Sunday Lunch and our firm family favourites. So this Spring, whether it’s at home or in a local pub/restaurant, why not combine a good Sunday walk with a roast dinner, surely a great tradition to be enjoyed by adults and children

ROYSTON FOOD BANK
The Royston Food Bank team have been hard at work preparing to get their Food Bank project underway. The Group, made up of members of Royston Churches and the local Community generally, are working in conjunction with the Trussell Trust, a nationwide charity who have helped groups set up Food Banks across the UK for the last 12 years. Extensive local research had proved that there was a need for Food Bank help for some struggling families and individuals in Royston who were finding it difficult at times to afford to feed themselves and their children. This was often because of low wages not keeping up with the rising cost of living or people going through a crisis of one kind or another in their lives. The Food Bank team were extremely pleased and grateful to receive the free use of a food storage room from Homestore in South Close and also “The House,” Youth Drop in Centre in Market Hill as the Distribution Centre. Generous funding from North Herts District Council Royston Area Committee and the Brian Racher Trust has also enabled them to equip their food storage room and cover some other start up costs. However more funding is always needed to progress and sustain the project further. The Food Bank aims to open its doors twice a week (days and times to be confirmed) as soon as soon as everything is in place to do so, but there is a great deal of work to be done beforehand. All Food Bank users will be referred on a strictly controlled voucher basis only, from registered Referral agencies such as GP’s, Home-Start, the Royston Children’s Centre, Schools etc. and help will be offered to enable people to move on from their problems when they come to the Distribution Centre for their 3 days supply of food. Any member of the local community who would like to help either through volunteering for or giving donations of food or money can contact the team through : info@royston.foodbank.org. uk or visitwww.royston.foodbank.org.uk
GLOWING REPORT
A leading home care provider, Bluebird Care has been recognised for the high standards and quality services they provide to people in North Hertfordshire. Bluebird Care received an unannounced inspection from the Care Quality Commission recently reporting on all aspects of the service. An extract of the report says: “We spoke with six people who received a service from the agency, and with two relatives. They all spoke highly of the service they or their family member received. People we spoke with told us that staff understood their care and support needs and were polite and helpful. One person we spoke with told us the service was: ‘Brilliant and carers understand what I want’. Providing care in the community throughout the whole of North Hertfordshire, Bluebird Care’s personal, tailor-made approach has proved to be a big hit with customers. The franchise is owned and operated by Dr Sarbjit Singh, who is passionate about providing high quality care for local people. With the local office based in Letchworth Garden City, care is provided in Stevenage and North Hertfordshire, and from Knebworth to Royston including Hitchin, and Baldock and all the surrounding villages. Bluebird Care provides professional care staff who visit older and disabled people in their own homes. Care visits can last for as half an hour or an hour at a time up to full time live in care. The unique and combined talents of a group of jewellery makers, together with two local artists, will be on show in an exhibition at Curwens Solicitors in Royston High Street during March and April. Budding Beaders is a locally-based group whose members design and create jewellery using various techniques, styles and materials, including wirework, glass, resin and clay. A wide variety of items will be on display at Curwens. Member Jane Skinner, who is organising the Budding Beaders’ display said: “This is an excellent opportunity for members to show the breadth of their amazing skills and talents. Every member of Budding Beaders has her own style and the pieces are unique. They make some beautiful, high quality jewellery and some even make their own beads out of glass, clay, resin and other materials. We hope the exhibition may inspire some visitors to join our group as we always welcome new members.” Joining them in the exhibition will be artists Mike Dobson and Nursel Darroux. Mike draws and paints and Nursel is a painter and ceramic artist. Mike lives in Royston and paints various subjects, particularly portraits. He is currently exhibiting paintings in an exhibition at Royston Museum. Mike studied at Barnsley School of Art, followed by a course in industrial design at Leicester College of Art and Design, and he worked for many years designing school furniture. He said: “I did not really plan for retirement, however drawing and painting were always at the back of my mind even after 45 years of total neglect. So I decided to pick up my brushes, blow off the very thick cobwebs and try painting. I have hardly stopped since.” Nursel was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University in 1998. In addition to being a painter and ceramic artist, she has worked as a jewellery and fashion designer. She describes her work as being “all about creating fantastic worlds and stories” which are playful and full of colour.

BUSINESS
IS YOUR GLASS HALF-FULL OR HALF-EMPTY?
How would you answer that old question? Are you the optimist who thinks it is half-full, or the pessimist who knows its half-empty? Traditionally, this question would only be answered in two ways, although a recruitment advert for the Royal Society of Engineering from a few years ago offered a third answer; ‘An engineer will tell you that the glass was constructed twice as big as it needed to be.’ In a departure from my usual pieces for ‘The Listing’, here are a few more alternative answers to amuse you all: • The hassled mum says, ‘Sweetheart it’s whatever you want it to be, just please let mummy have five minutes peace and quiet.’ • The actor says, ‘Whatever the director wants it to be - or not to be...’ • The politician says, ‘Under the last government the glass was half-empty, and becoming emptier, but thanks to our party’s new leadership, the glass is definitely now half-full, and becoming fuller.’ • The physicist says that the glass is not empty at all - it is half-filled with water and half-filled with air - hence, fully filled on the whole! • The call-centre operator asks if you’d mind holding while she asks her manager. • The IT support person asks if you’ve tried emptying the glass and then refilling it again? I was at a business seminar in Cambridge recently where an eminent entrepreneur told us that a business-person needs to be able to spot opportunities when they arise, and then take advantage of them. ‘Be prepared,’ he said, ‘and be ready to act!’ So if I asked you to think where you fit in with this ‘half full/half empty’ debate, I hope the clever ones will simply take the glass and drink it, because in life, as in business, actions speak louder than words! Cheers! www.julianberry.co.uk

CHARITY READATHON
ROYSIA PERFORMS MIDSUMMER MAGIC
Melbourn Principal Simon Holmes said: “We are always looking to encourage a love of reading in our students; there is strong evidence to link reading for pleasure and literacy to academic success as well as personal happiness. Readathon enables us to have a focus on reading whilst also supporting great causes at the same time.”
Roysia School pupils were treading the boards last week when 41 year 8 pupils put on a production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The play was put together in 4 days with the help of Shakespeare tutor Anthony Glen. The workshop culminated in a performance for parents last Friday evening. Despite nerves and unexpected musical gremlins the show was a stunning success! All pupils in year 8 stepped up to the mark and performed brilliantly, and a number of individual performances were outstanding. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 2014 was a huge success thanks to a very special group of year 8 pupils and the magic of Anthony Glen.
ROTARY TECHNOLOGY TOURNAMENT
INTERNATIONAL DAY AT ICKNIELD WALK
Students in Years 7-9 at Melbourn Village College embarked on a marathon 3 week reading challenge to raise money for CLIC Sargent, Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity and Readwell which provides new books and storytellers for children in Hospital. The charity has recently provided a £30,000 grant to fund Addenbrooke’s Children’s Ward for three years through the Barbara Ward Children’s Foundation.
16 Mridian students took part in the Rotary technology tournament 2014 at the Cambridge motel. Several schools from the local area took part in the problem solving challenge organised by the Rotary. Students were asked to design and develop a device that would pick up a meteorite (tennis ball) from a safe distance of 1.5m and placed on a target. Pupils in Year 9 were very successful ( 1st , joint 3rd and 10th. ) The Senior team made up of a mixture of Year 12 and 13 pupils had a slightly tougher challengebut they came first for the 3rd year running! The winning Year 9 team was Ben Crawford, Daniel Dawes & Eryn Symonds and the Senior team was Aaron Paul, Connor Sullivan, Samuel Curtis & Philippa Martin.
At Icknield Walk we have been learning about different countries around the world. We started with a drumming workshop led by an African musician; we really enjoyed all playing the drums together (although it did make our hands sore). Then we all had a chance to learn a Zumba routine, it was really hard work! As we travelled round the school we learned about a different country in each room. We made art work from some countries, such as aboriginal style paintings of kangaroos and pictures of France in the style of Monet. Some parents came in to tell us about the different countries they have lived in. I really liked it when the students who are learning Spanish at Meridian school came into see us. They helped us to read some books in Spanish, then we listened to them talking to each other in Spanish and we could work out what they were saying! It was a really good day! By Abi Lee (year 4)

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is
misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn
up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just
the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

In the garden... March
Royston Choral Society presents Choral Classics at All Saints Church, Melbourn on 29th March. This mixed programme includes Howard Goodall’s The Lord is my Shepherd, the familiar theme tune for BBC TV’s The Vicar of Dibley. Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass provides a contemporary contrast to classics such as Byrd’s Ave Verum and Stanford’s Beati Quorum. Irving Berlin’s Putting on the Ritz and Guy Turner’s Tequila Samba provide a change of pace in the second half. Royston Choral Society performs a varied repertoire across the year, from the great choral classics with orchestra to the contemporary and unaccompanied. New singers are always welcome to join our friendly choir. Rather than auditions we invite prospective members to come along to our open rehearsals, free of charge. The next open rehearsal will be on Tuesday April 29th 8.00 pm at Royston Parish Church. Choir members come from Royston and the surrounding area. The chances are new members will find someone familiar already singing with us. Top tips and ideas to improve your garden!
This is the month that spring arrives in the garden, in this new garden feature I will be looking at ways to make improvements to your outdoor spaces to make them more enjoyable. 1. Be ruthless With the new growing season beginning now is the time to be ruthless with plants that are not performing. A good garden is always in a state of change. Be objective if a plant or area in the garden is not working do not be afraid to dig it up and start again. Our outdoor spaces are precious to us, there is no room for plants that cannot earn their place. 2. Maintain exiting planting It has been a wet winter and many of us have not been inclined to get out in the garden, but now is the time to clear away the winter debris and look at the health of your garden. Prune those forgotten lavenders, remove the perennial weeds and tidy through the herbaceous borders. Above all, I strongly recommend mulching the beds and borders to reduce weed germination in the next few weeks. 3. Make your mark! Most of us inherit our gardens when we move but human nature is to put your own mark on things. We think nothing of changing our kitchens and bathrooms to improve our quality of life. The same should apply to our outdoor spaces. Consider if the layout of your space is right for you and how you wish to use the garden. Mark out potential new areas with canes to help you visualise the changes. 4. Review the size and location of your patio Rather than trying to entertain on a patio that is only large enough for two in the shadiest part of the garden, consider the alternatives! In my opinion, 3m x 3m in a sunny spot is a good starting point and I would recommend taking the rest of the garden into consideration too. Anchor the paving into the garden with planting to help it feel like it belongs. 5. Lawn Improvements A lawn is an important part of most gardens, but why not change the shape for a more interesting look to your outdoor space. For a stylised shape use an edging product to maintain the effect. Spring is a good time to be considering turfing and seeding. Go for it! Start with little changes, it can make all the difference to your enjoyment of the garden!
