LIMITLESS ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS The doors open at 9 Melbourn Street once again!
Unused since 2011, finally the building gets a new lease of life, as the home of Limitless Academy of Performing Arts. The keys were handed over on the 9th March and ever since it’s been a hive of activity with a complete refurbishment being undertaken by its new occupants. Peter Heppelthwaite, Peter McNally, Ruth Burton and a very hardworking team have managed to transform the building from its former state of dilapidation. Limitless Academy of Performing Arts will open the doors for a free open day on the 4th May for anybody between the ages of 8 and 21 to experience their unrivalled standard of training in Drama, Film & TV, Musical Theatre Dance and Musical Theatre Singing.
inject fun and care into every aspect of Limitless.
The first three years have seen over 20 productions in theatre, film and television, a phenomenal achievement in itself, but when the standards are a high as they are, it becomes mind boggling. Winners of the National Theatre ‘Connections’ in 2016, Winners of the Welwyn Youth Drama Festival 2019, Winners of the Misty Moon London Film Festival 2018 are but a small part of the success.
The open day heralds your chance to experience any and every discipline of your choice. Come and work with genuine actors who really know the business, who truly enjoy what they do and laugh as hard as they play, with tuition that is tailored to the individual, “Royston was a place of choice when we first began our search for whatever their needs. a ‘home’ right at the beginning – “The joy is in the process, the it’s just taken us three years to find fun is in the learning and the the right building.” satisfaction is seeing our students thrive in their personal growth. Limitless was established in 2016, by three professional actors, who each had successful careers in all the disciplines they now share with the students. If their combined C.V’s were written here, it would pretty much take over this whole article. From Hollywood blockbuster, to West-End, touring No.1 theatre HERTFORDSHIRE’S PREMIER PERFORMANCE ARTS SCHOOL to regular TV appearances, there’s not much the three “Heads of State” at Limitless haven’t done. “We’re not teachers; we’re actors with a wealth of experience to back up all that we do.” They put the success of Limitless down to that simple statement. The outcome is professional training, carried out by passionate people, who

May also brings with it two Bank Holidays, and on these weekends we look forward to the return of the Royston May Fayre, the Royston Town Football Club’s Beer Festival and Bassingbourn Charities’ Family Fun Day. Each of these events promises fun for all ages. Barkway Market is a great example of a village market at its best, with over 120 stalls selling homeware, gardenware, plants, clothing and jewellery, art and craft, much of it vintage, antique, and/or collectable as well as artisan food and drink. You can be sure of finding something that little bit different in a quintessentially English setting. Do visit Wimpole Home Farm and the surrounding parkland to enjoy seeing the new-born lambs as they take their first steps. Finally, we often hear that “there’s nothing for teenagers to do” in the area. The Royston Army Cadets offers young people so much in the way of outdoor activities and sport as well as an opportunity to develop a sense of self and a sense of community. Why not drop in to see them?

Once upon a time, 300 million years ago to be more precise, there was a particle of sand called Sandie who was surrounded by millions of other sand particles. One day, Sandie became trapped by sand building up overhead. Being sand, there wasn’t much Sandie could do about this, except sit there as more sand piled on top. Then more sand piled on top of that until a transformation took place! All the squashed sand turned to stone - sandstone! Then an ice age struck with parts of the UK covered in an ice layer that was kilometres thick. Sandie, all of a sudden (which is very slow in geological terms) was being shoved

along with a torrent of thick ice! Finally, the ice melted away and Sandie took in the new surroundings. It turns out Sandie had travelled over 120 miles from Derbyshire or Yorkshire (Sandie wasn’t too sure) all the way to Royston! Sandie was a particle of sand that is now a part of the Royse Stone. That big stone that sits at the bottom of Royston High Street. The stone is known as a “glacial erratic”. The “glacial” because it was moved by ice, the “erratic” is from the Latin “errare”, meaning to wander. Since being in Royston, the stone has found itself in a few different locations and has even been yarn bombed! I bet all those woollies would have come in handy during that ice age! www.roystonmuseum.org.uk

Paloma is a beautiful 12 year old pretty girl who desperately wants to be your friend but is a little wary, and new owners will need to give her space and a lot of time to gain her trust. She now allows people to pick her up and is happy just to do her own thing, so may suit a home where she can interact with humans as and when she feels confident too. She has met all the resident cats and dogs in foster and although wary of the dogs, will tolerate being in the same space as them. roysTON VETS Spring is here, but with hotter
temperatures and more time outside this also means an increased risk for fleas and ticks infestation. Fleas are tiny insects that live by sucking and consuming blood. Only a small number of fleas are normally present on dogs and cats, as the most will stay in the environment until they are hungry. You can prevent these problems by keeping up to date with household sprays and flea treatments. Ticks are a different
6
type of external parasite. They commonly climb on the tip of grass or bushes and wait for the next dog or cat to stick to. At that point, the tick will cut the skin of the host and start sucking blood. These parasites are particularly nasty because they can transmit serious diseases. Many flea treatments are effective as tick treatments as well. Don’t forget to check your dog or cat’s coat regularly. NEWS FROM OUR CLUBS & SOCIETIES... Royston and the surrounding villages are a hive of activity. We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of clubs and societies within our town and villages, covering a wide range of interests - from arts to sports, adventure to support.
Since its launch in 2005, The Listing has been proud to support the very many clubs and societies. We maintain and publish a comprehensive list of all the organisations, clubs and societies on our website: www.bit.ly/ClubsDirectory
Royston Cycling Club WI pm Five Years in the Saddle
Now celebrating its fifth anniversary, the club’s weekly rides start from Royston Market Place on Sundays at 9am with 3 to 4 groups riding at average speeds typically ranging from 12 mph to 18+mph over 20 to 40 mile local routes. Non-members who are over 18 are always welcome to join a ride. All that’s needed are some comfortable riding clothes, a helmet, a roadworthy bike and a little energy. Alternatively, those wanting to first learn more about the club can come to the Bull in Royston where riders gather at around 11am for a coffee and chat after the Sunday club run. More details can be found at roystoncc.co.uk
roysia womens club We had one speaker in April, Mike Beech who spoke about ‘The Occupations of Victorian Britain’, quite a grim period for many in the first half of the 19th Century. We also had our monthly social and a tombola to round off the Spring programme. The funds raised by the tombola will go towards the Charity we have chosen to support this year, the restoration of Royston Parish Church, after the dreadful fire last December. After the Easter break our summer programme starts on 20th May when Andy Malcolm will be speaking about the Fisherman’s Mission and the vital role they play in caring for our fishermen. We would be pleased to welcome you to our friendly group of women from varied backgrounds and with a wide variety of interests. We have regular meetings to discuss books, learn ukulele, take country rambles and enjoy lunch together. We also organise visits to theatres and places of interest as well as social events like coffee mornings. In May we will be reviewing the year at our Annual General Meeting.

The history of lighthouses attracted a 200 strong audience at Royston U3A’s meeting. Lighthouse fan Mark Lewis said the enduring romantic appeal is down to the locations of lighthouses. But the story of the engineers who designed them, the workers who built them and the men who lived in them is equally extraordinary. His talk shed light on the two thousand year history of lighthouses and he revealed that one designer was Henry Winstanley from Saffron Walden who constructed the first lighthouse at Eddystone Rock in 1698, a notorious spot for shipwrecks. The next monthly meeting will be on May 28th at 2pm with a talk by Graham Harrison on Poisons for Medicine. www.u3asites.org.uk/royston or contact Jackie: jackieroystonu3a@gmail.com or 01763 248097

Royston Townswomen Guild A last hurrah by four old men in a boat, this
lively report entertained the April meeting. The intrepid quartet bought a boat brushed up on their sailing and navigational skills then carefully sailed up the east coast of Great Britain to the challenging waters of the Pentland Firth. Foretold they would not have the experience to sail through the notoriously strong tidal seas, the group sailed through on calm waters just 24 hours ahead of a storm. Many times on their voyage they witnessed the call out and return of the RNLI giving thanks it was never for themselves. Their swansong over, they sold the boat. Next month’s meeting requests each member to bring along two pairs of socks! Come along to our next meeting 7th May at 1.45pm in Heritage Hall, Town Hall Royston Contact Pauline: 01763 221314

Out & About... Ashwell Music Festival
The beautiful, historic village of Ashwell is set to host its 2019 Music Festival with an eclectic programme boasting internationally renowned musicians and artists. Running across two weekends – from 10th-19th May – the Hertfordshire village provides a stunning setting, with more than just music to explore. Ashwell Music Festival is now in its 66th year, having begun in 1953 by Canon Jack Catterick and mainly takes place in The Church of St Mary’s, a Grade One listed building from the 14th and 15th centuries well known for its striking spire and medieval graffiti. The Festival raises money to develop the Festival and support the Church’s restoration fund. Festival highlights this year include brass, jazz, classic euro pop and contributions from the village’s own talented musicians and singers. The festival launches on Friday 10th May with the Goldfield Ensemble weaving tales of Fens folklore with music and myth, entertaining young and grown up story fans alike at Ashwell School from 6pm. Internationally renowned Foden’s Band, acclaimed as one of the best in the world, and winners of the Brass Band Championships of Great Britain 12 times over, are the stars of Saturday 11th May,
playing in St Mary’s at 7pm. On Thursday 16th May at 7pm, the young musicians and singers of two local schools, Ashwell JMI and The Knights Templar come together with St Mary’s Junior Choir to present a free concert at St Mary’s Church at 7pm. On Friday 17th May, from 7pm, Basin Street Brawlers take the stage at St Mary’s. The UK’s own ‘world class’ (BBC) early jazz ensemble are famous for playing the most beautiful melodies and raucous rags of the 1920s and 1930s. The group are acclaimed as ‘London’s top hot jazz ensemble’, according to visitlondon.com, making regular appearances at famous clubs and concert halls nationwide, including the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room and Oxford’s Holywell Music Room. Then on Saturday 18th May at 7pm, Ashwell meets its Waterloo as Planet Abba deliver their fabulous, choreographed stage show, with many costume changes, faithfully encapsulates the sights and sounds of Abba and their endless stream of unforgettable hits.
Said Festival Chair, John Rowlands ‘We’re thrilled with the talent we’re bringing to the village this year as well as the support we’ve had from sponsors and people who give their time to make this event such as success. We can’t wait for the magic to start.” Did you know? This church is so steeped in history it has medieval graffiti, describing the horror of being a survivor in the Black Death bubonic plague pandemic of the 14th century. www.stmarysashwell.org.uk/church

Rotary Round Up
May is a very busy time for us as we will be visiting the Lake District for the President’s weekend away and then, just a few days later, many of us will journey to Paray-le-Monial in France to visit our twin club. Here we know we will be very well entertained and, from previous experience, over fed (but deliciously so)!

Band supports Church restoration
Royston Town Band has had a close relationship with the church for many years - we have played at weddings, held many concerts there including our 150 year anniversary celebration and even funerals. To show our support for the church, all proceeds of our Spring Concert will go to the church’s restoration fund. We hope you’ll join us on Sunday 19th May at the Town Hall 2-4pm for some brass band

Following on from the success of the TV show ‘Care Home for 4 year olds’, Margaret House Residential and Dementia Care Home in Barley and Barley and Barkway Federation have set up a partnership, resulting in a series of regular interactions between residents and the school children. Resident Mrs Pamela Green said “Seeing the children makes me feel younger, I really enjoy their company” and resident Mrs Rene Wiggins added “I didn’t have children but I really enjoy their visits”. So far sessions have included the children reading, drawing and more with residents at Margaret House and the residents going to the school to take part in the after school art. Lea-Ann Smith, Social and Wellbeing Manager said “It has been fantastic, the resident’s eyes light up when they see the children at the door and it’s lovely to see both age groups enjoying doing activities together and to hear resident’s asking when their ‘young friends’ will be coming back.”
will be working together on a larger scale art project. Using the theme of our villages across the ages to tie in with National Care Home day’s celebration of art in care and the community, they will be asking everyone for drawings and sketches of local scenes. These will combine into a large scale finished piece of art and eventually be displayed between Margaret House and the two school sites. Simon Richardson, a member of staff at the school said “We hope to offer an afternoon of drawing for residents at Margaret House over the Easter Holiday and concurrently run open family drawing sessions at both schools. We would like as many people as possible to be able to contribute towards our finished collage/painting.” 01763 848272

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Tiramisu Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing. I hope you all had a lovely break for Easter. This month, with the promise of some good weather, two bank holiday weekends and a distinct probability of the first Le Fey barbecue of the year, my thoughts turned to a dessert, that is not only a real crowd pleaser, but is simple to create and can be made in advance. I used a 20cm x 20cm ceramic serving dish approximately 6cm deep, but you could use a different size and have a deeper or more shallow slice, I have even seen it made in individual portions and also served up by the spoonful like trifle. You will need • 568ml Double Cream • 250g Mascarpone Cheese • 75ml Marsala • 5tbsp Brown Caster Sugar • 300ml Strong Black Coffee • 175g Sponge Fingers • 50g Dark Chocolate
Let’s begin by making the coffee and pouring it into a shallow dish to allow it to cool before we need to use it. Next we should whisk the cream, mascarpone, sugar and Marsala into a thick, yet light and airy mixture. Set this to the side while we move on to the next step. Take the sponge fingers and, one at a time, dip it into the coffee and turn it over to ensure both sides are covered, then lay the sponge fingers in neat rows covering the base of your dish. Resist the temptation to completely soak the sponge fingers they will be extremely tricky to handle or disintegrate completely. Once you have a completed layer, top with half of the cream/ mascarpone mixture and finish to a smooth top. Now cover with a fine layer of finely grated chocolate and a dusting of cocoa powder. (I grate the chocolate straight on to the top). Repeat with a second layer of coffee soaked biscuits and a second layer of the cream and mascarpone mixture again finishing to a clean, smooth top. Finish with a generous layer of grated chocolate and a dusting of cocoa powder. Now leave in the fridge for a couple of hours to chill and firm up then it is ready to serve in slices, spoonfuls or great big dollops...the choice dear reader, as always, is all yours.
• 2 tsp Cocoa Powder
Variations You may choose to leave out the Marsala or you may wish to add more. For more of a boozy kick sprinkle a little Marsala on top of the soaked sponge finger layer before adding the cream and mascarpone layer. Some people may not like coffee -you could use a blend of freshly squeezed citrus fruits to soak the sponge finger and flavour the cream mixture with a glug of Limoncello or something orange based like Cointreau. I would love to hear your creative ideas please email them into to The Listing team at info@townhousepublishing.co.uk Until next time dear reader...

Family tree research This month’s photo is from The Cambridgeshire Collection, available at the Central Library, Lion’s Yard, Cambridge.
We were researching our family from Witchford near Ely, and we knew from the 1891 census that William Henry Cole was a 23 year-old Beer Retailer at The Hammer and Anvil pub. We ordered the box of photos from the Library storeroom and a few minutes later were astonished to find not only a picture of the Hammer and Anvil but one with a number of people outside. On the rear of the photo was the names of the subjects, and they were our direct relatives!
The younger gentleman with the white sleeves is William Henry. The older lady in the middle is his Grandmother Mary Ann Cole who in 1891 lived with him and two of his siblings. The man to the right of the photo is his uncle William. The Hammer and Anvil was originally run by Williams grandfather, who was also a blacksmith. www.facebook.com/ ukfamilytreestarter

Bury Lane current grow 35 acres of the traditional old variety asparagus, with new crowns being planted every year. The spears are hand-picked daily from the fields and in store for when it opens at 9am – you really cannot get fresher coupled with zero food miles. Cooking asparagus: Trim the asparagus by bending each stalk near the bottom and discarding the bit where it naturally breaks. Bring some well salted water to the boil in a shallow wide pan, add the asparagus and cook for 3-4 minutes until tender.

Here is a beautiful poem written by Peter Stallard, one of our readers A couple of years ago I could write poetry With the words flowing easily from my pen. But I had a number of falls in quick succession And to find the right words has been a struggle since then. Also, I could no longer walk properly And ended up just slowly shuffling along. I subsequently went to Addenbrookes hospital, Where they soon diagnosed what was wrong.
But with almost constant irritation from eczema Any sleep I have rarely goes very deep. Parkinson’s can also bring with it memory loss From which I am suffering today, and every day. Not just names, but things I could once do on my computer I can no longer recall in any way. It has also sent me back to my ‘baby’ days As I dribble, for no reason at all. At the same time I appear to have moved on in years For my writing has become straggly and small.

Hidden Royston Banyers Below Stairs
An old building is real - solid and vibrant when in use but pinning down the past life of that same building can be a challenge. History is a selective record and interpretation of so-called facts can be surprisingly inconclusive. That, at least, is what I found before exploring beneath Banyers House in the centre of Royston. Some things we know about past ownership of the building – currently rooms, restaurant and pub – is that it only became a hotel in the 1930s. In the early 20th century it was home to a local racehorse owner (with his horses stabled
ellie mentions..
to the rear). But the house is much older - built in the 1700s for Edward Banyer, Vicar of Royston from 1739 to 1752. It was later the home of Joseph Beldam who played an important part in the abolition of the international slave trade. When digging around, trying to unearth some ‘underground’ stories about the Banyers, getting a clear picture of the past presented a challenge. I’d heard all sorts of stories – about a tunnel to the parish church opposite, and a late 18th century icehouse that only came to light when workmen were recently digging foundations. I’d also heard stories about ghostly goings on, and even a tale about some dodgy £20 notes that seemed too intriguing to be true. Equipped with this sketchy information, I set out to separate fact from fiction. To uncover the whole story visit: http://bit.ly/HiddenRoyston Written by Chris Lee leeinroyston@aol.com
I love May as it really starts to feel like summer and is the start of holiday season. This month I look forward to spending my bank holidays in the sunshine (I hope!). I will definitely be attending the Royston Town FC Beer Festival and hopefully will be able to pop along to some of the other events too!

Home & Garden
Think Garden, Think Richard Materials For A Purpose... Path Products Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Continuing my series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing how best to choose the right materials for your desired purpose and how they best fit into the design of a space. I want to get you thinking about the options you have and how the right selection can give you a cohesive, timeless solution rather than a uninspiring result. This month I want to investigate products used for level changes. Bricks are a classic material to consider when dealing with a level change in a garden. I like to have harmony of materials in my designs so would look to match bricks to the house. Level changes can be small or great depending on the site. Retaining walls that are holding up a body of earth need to be structurally strong. Concrete blocks on a good foundation with attractive facing bricks is a good solid solution. Smaller walls could have a paving stone top as a coping stone which doubles up as a seat. Moving through a level change will often need steps. Brick risers with a paving stone tread is a good solution and easy to tie into patio materials.
Sleepers have become very popular as a retaining product for level change in garden design. This is primarily due to the cost of a traditional wall built from small brick units compared to the longer units of a sleeper. Basically, you cover more ground with a sleeper. However, timber does not have the longevity of brick despite being cheaper. Best practice would be to use tanalised sleepers and protect the wood in contact with the earth with a dpc barrier or protective paint. This will help extend the life of the wood in contact with the earth. New soft wood sleepers are great to build with due to their uniformity of size. Oak sleepers are more expensive and although very attractive require more labour time for building with as they are harder to cut and less uniform in size. Sleepers make good steps through a level change and look especially good when used with other products such as gravel or paving to form the tread. In the spirit of low maintenance gardening many clients now love to have raised beds in the garden and sleepers are great for this. Not only do soft wood sleepers cut easily they fit well with timber lock bolts that you fire into the wood with an impact driver drill. Gabions are a less well-known product that provide great strength and stability when used to retain earth in a garden design. The principle is wire cages that are levelled, joined together and filled with stones. It is quite a municipal solution and most relevant in contemporary spaces. As with all things the devil is in the detail. It is not just a case of
tipping stones into wire cages. For the best results the outside facing stones need to be placed and the top stones arranged to give a good finished top surface. The choice of stone will dictate the cost of the filling material. I have heard of contractors dressing the outside and top with the decorative stone and filling the internal section with rubble as it is not visible. This would work best if the filling material and the decorative stone are similar sizes otherwise they may begin to move through each other. Grass slopes are underrated as a low impact solution to level change. Grading the earth with a digger over a distance can reduce a slope gently and easily without the need for a hard-landscaping solution. Grass seed and topsoil is certainly the cheaper option, but every garden is different and when space is restricted this may not be the appropriate option. Often in small gardens earth needs to be removed to make way for development of a space. This can lead to boundary level changes where you could consider using concrete gravel boards to prevent the neighbour’s garden falling into yours. Planting can also be used to disguise a difficult level change. For more in depth advice or garden design help please get in touch to arrange a consultation.

No job is too big or small, they are all completed in the same careful way making sure the customer is completely satisfied. Here we found a bit more about Simon and his business. Where do you live? Royston What’s your favourite local place to eat? There are quite a few local restaurants I like to eat at Your favourite local Shop? CTD Tiles What do you love about your work? I love my job, and the people I meet, and I like to use the latest products and keep up to date with the latest tiling trends. I like having satisfied and happy customers and take great pride in my work. Favourite thing about living in Royston Being close to most of my family and friends. Also, being close to the heath is a bonus.
Sharon mentions...
What are you looking forward to most this month? Hopefully some warmer weather, the first BBQ of summer and enjoying the big outdoors more. What is your proudest moment? I am proud of a lot of things but particularly running my own business, Getting married to my lovely wife Carol, winning ‘Tiler of The Year’ in 2007. I’m also proud to be called Grandad by my 11 grandchildren. I’ve also walked to the top of Mount Teide in Tenerife, the tallest mountain in Spain. What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? Live life to the full. I have suffered from Crohns Disease since I was a teenager, so this makes you see life from a different perspective ‘Live Life, Love Life’ How do you relax? I love to have a drink with friends and family. I also love taking long walks over Royston Heath or tending to the garden. When possible, I love to visit the coast or go on holidays.
May for me means the start of holiday season and alfresco dining! We have so many events this month to look forward to in addition to two bank holiday weekends – after a busy few months training for London Marathon I intend to take a month relaxing and hopefully enjoying some nice warm weather and swapping the trainers for walking boots and venturing out to our villages and possibly stopping at the newly opened Fox & Hounds in Barley and The Belle in Bassingbourn – if you are stuck for ideas what to do this month our what’s on section is full of events, including the annual Royston Beer & Music Festival, Ashwell Music Festival, Royston May Fayre and Barkway Market to name just a few! Whatever you have planned have a great month…
Four people you would invite to dinner. Of course, I’d invite my Wife, Mum and Dad and Freddie Mercury. What inspirational quote sums you up? Live life to the fullest and focus on the positives. Your favourite place to visit? Tenerife, I first visited when was 18 and I’m still going 30 years on and still love it! News from the conservators The next public meeting will be on 23rd May at Royston Town Hall 7pm to have an open consultation on some future ideas and plans. Royston and the surrounding areas have had a increase in population and that impacts on the Heath. It is our duty to make sure we look after the interests of the Heath and of all its users. The public meeting forum encourages interaction with the users of the Heath. We will be asking the Friends of Therfield Heath, the Grazier, Dog Poo Patrol, Archery, Golf, Cricket, Rugby, Heath Sports and the Police to make representations. “Education” is still top of the conservator’s agenda and we are working on improving the level of communication to the users of Therfield Heath with further public meetings planned. The site will be surveyed for breeding birds three times over the summer. The first recce showed it has a good density of ground breeding meadow pipits and skylarks, especially in areas not exposed to dog disturbance. We have also recently spotted at least a couple of pairs of grey
partridges. The skylark and grey partridge are on the UK red list (highest conservation priority), while the meadow pipit is on the amber list – so all need as much help as we can give them. Please do your bit to help by respecting signs requesting dogs to be on leads. Please do not allow your dogs to chase any birds. The volunteers have been busy helping to clear invasive dogwood as well as some bramble, ash and sycamore, from the rifle range area. The area was prime chalk grassland and we hope to regain at least some of it. The Grazier has confirmed that he will bring sheep on to the West end at the end of May/beginning of June. We will keep you up-todate via The Listing, our website and social media. Enquiries may be directed to clerk@therfieldheath.org.uk www.therfieldheath.org.uk

Home-Start Matters We often write to tell you how we help local families overcome times of personal difficulty and you respond generously to our requests for financial and practical help to achieve this. Now, we would just like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone who supported our ‘Celebrating Voices Concert’ in March. Firstly, thank you to Linda Bance of ‘Play Music Play’ www.playmusicplay.co.uk Linda’s inspiration and guidance took four local choirs through to a tuneful and immensely enjoyable evening. The choirs were: ‘Foxton Singers’ led by Philip Atkin, ‘Reed St Mary’s Church Choir’ led by Helen Holliday, ‘Ad Hoc’ led by James Hobro and ‘Womensing’ led by Linda. Indeed, Linda had initiated the idea of a pop-up women’s choir for new singers and nearly fifty ladies, aged between 13 and 80, took to the stage for their first – and very popular – performance.
26 1905 The Listing Royston May 2019.indd 26
Local author Sarah Harrison was a warm and entertaining host and the community singing encouraged everyone to ‘have a go’. We were sad not to be able to perform as planned in St John’s Church in Royston and we wish them well in the speedy restoration. Meridian School quickly rescued us by offering the use of their superb facilities and giving us wonderful support. Many people, including a very appreciative audience, helped to make the evening a success and we would like to thank you all. Linda Bance’s ‘Womensing’ choir, kindly donated almost £1,000 from their weekly contributions and this, together with the proceeds of the event raised over £3,300! And we shall hear more treats from them in future because the ladies have voted to become ‘Home-Start Royston and South Cambridgeshire’s Choir’! admin@hsrsc.org.uk
Community transport scheme hits 25th anniversary Royston & District Community Transport are proud to have reached their 25th Anniversary of supporting the local community, taking people where they need to go. Over the years, RDCT has grown to meet the everincreasing demand for their service. From modest beginnings back in 1994, with less than thirty volunteer drivers using their own cars and one wheelchair-accessible minibus, they now have eightyfive volunteer car drivers, plus three part-time paid drivers. Their vehicle fleet now comprises three minibuses and two MPVs, all wheelchairaccessible. The demand from passengers increases steadily, with over 12,700 journeys made last year. Drivers carry out approximately fifty journeys every weekday, plus an increasing number on Saturdays, and in 2018 they
covered over 223,000 miles. The scheme’s success demands sophisticated systems to handle bookings, driver allocations and invoicing and they are developing a computerised system to help cope with the workload. RDCT is always looking to recruit new volunteer car and minibus drivers, who would receive 50p per mile towards their vehicle running costs. If you can’t use public transport and don’t have a car, we can help (please give at least three working days’ notice). Or if you would like to be a volunteer, please call RDCT: 01763 245228 or see www.roytrans.co.uk

Keep your skin Fresh this summer As the weather begins to hotten up (we hope) it is important to keep your skin looking healthy and hydrated. Because of this I find it hard in hot weather to know what to do with my makeup. How do you start in business? Let’s look at three well-known successful entrepreneurs
do to make money out of it?
• Alan Sugar started by selling car aerials out of the back of a van. Less than 20 years after starting Amstrad, he sold it for £125 million! • Teenage Richard Branson started a student magazine, with a loan from his mum. That allowed him to begin the next business, and the next – he now has more than 200 companies. • James Dyson spent over five years inventing in his garden shed –5,000 prototypes later invented the world’s first cyclonic, bagless vacuum cleaner. So start small, work hard, reinvest – and then work hard some more! And if you’re still looking for that initial idea, here are some really hot topics to stimulate you budding billionaires: Vegetables- Vegetarianism is highly fashionable right now. Now I love meat, but I am happy to admit that veg is healthy and more efficient to grow in terms of its energy usage. Everyone’s talking about it – what could you
Plastic- We all agree that plastic pollution is a problem, so what’s the answer? I reckon there are good business ideas in the answers to these questions: Could you find an alternative material to replace single-use plastic items? Could you invent a ‘plastic’ that is biodegradable? Could you educate people so they take advantage of the recycling facilities that already exist? Smartphones- Let’s face it, we’re all addicted to our smartphones, yet many savvy consumers are becoming keen to decrease their dependence on them. What could you do to help people reduce their reliance on screens? An app to monitor usage? Digital detox getaways? What do you think? I hope this inspires you to create another booming business success story – and if you do, the fee for using my ideas is just 1% of your shares. Is that a deal?
