WELCOME Our Christmas issue is my favourite of the whole year - and this year it’s a double whammy as it’s also our 100th issue! Who would have thought, back in 2005, that The Listing would still be going strong 100 issues later.... It is thanks to all of you, our readers, advertisers, organisations and community (and undoubtedly a supportive family...) that The Listing is what it is today so THANK YOU for your continued support. It is a pleasure to publish and serve our community and we plan to be around for at least a hundred issues more.... keep your eyes peeled for exciting new developments in the coming year. Our front covers have always been a talking point and we are sure that you’ll enjoy looking back on all of our past covers. Why not take a look at our website for a closer look! The December issue is jam-packed full of events and activites for the Christmas season. Our pick this month is the ice rink at the Old Bull, as part of the Christmas Fayre on Saturday 7th December. And of course, our annual favourite “Shop in Royston” feature. Like town centres up and down the country, our own faces challenges as the retail landscape adapts to online shopping and the convenience of one-stopshop stores. However, if you value singularity and believe in local retail as part of our community, please choose to shop locally for at least some of your Christmas shopping - there are hidden gems to be found! Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year

ROYSTON CAVE CHRISTMAS OPENING!
People often ask why Royston Cave has such limited opening hours particularly as it is such a unique place. The answer is quite simple. The Cave is made entirely of chalk and as such it is very sensitive to water. If water gets into the Cave, it can cause the chalk to expand and when it dries out the resulting contraction can cause cracks in the carvings. Of course this doesn’t happen overnight but it is important to keep the atmosphere in the Cave as constant as possible. Large numbers of visitors also contribute to the humidity problem as all of us exhale water with each breath we take. The other factor that affects conditions in the Cave is artificial light. If the lights in the Cave are on for a long period of time, spores that lie dormant on the surface of the chalk can germinate and grow causing potential damage to the carvings. So, to help keep these factors in check, we limit the number of visitors and the amount of times the Cave is open and during the winter months the Cave (like most National Trust properties for example) is put to bed until the Easter of the following year. However, we do appreciate that people want to see the Cave and so every Christmas we open up for a candlelight viewing to let people see the Cave as it was meant to be seen all those centuries ago. To coincide with the Royston Christmas Fayre we will be open on Saturday 7 December from 10.30 to 1.00pm. Entrance is £2.50 with accompanied children free. Tickets will be on sale at the Cave door on the day.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT - ROYSTON TOWN BAND
Royston Town Band will once again be inviting townsfolk along to their annual Christmas concert at Royston Town Hall on Sunday 22nd December at 7:00pm. The concert has been a regular feature in the build up to Christmas for over 20 years. It has proven to be enduringly popular with audiences over that time giving them the chance to join in and sing a number of their favourite carols and also enjoy many much loved Christmas classic tunes. A visit from Father Christmas with his sack of goodies has also prove n a delight for younger members of the audience. The band will again be joined by ‘Singing Aloud’, a local choir, who will be performing a number of songs and helping with the traditional carols There will also be a raffle with Christmas Hampers to be won. So do come along and support the Royston Town Band, ticket prices are £7 for adults and £3 for children and are available on the door. The band will also be playing carols in the Town Centre on the weekends leading up to Christmas raising funds for their new band room.

#ROYSTONCONNECTS 3 SAVING MONEY, SAVING THE PLANET This third and final article in the ‘Royston Connects’ series on how online communication tools can help build local communities, shines a light on two Royston initiatives that keep items in use and out of landfill. At a time when household budgets are being squeezed and our ‘throwaway society’ is under attack, Royston Freecycle and Royston Classified address both issues by using social media to match people with ‘offers’ and ‘wants’. The Royston Freecycle Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ roystonrecycle/info) celebrates its 9th birthday this December and is run entirely by volunteers who have overseen 30,000 items changing hands for free. Membership is free and open to all, and the group has just signed up its 5,000th member. At a time when some say people know the price of everything and the value of nothing, it’s heartening to know that so many people are willing to give away their pre-loved possessions without expecting payment in return. For some there’s economic necessity in selling, rather than donating, items, which is where Royston Classified comes in. This online facility is all about keeping trade local; a convenient way for residents, businesses and organisations to trade old and new items, keeping them in use while helping to make Christmas more affordable. It’s free to register at http://roystonclassified.co.uk/index. php New for 2014 To mark the start of its 10th anniversary year, Royston Freecycle Group is launching the Royston Repair Cafe. In early 2014, this free event will invite people to bring broken items (tools, toys, bikes, small pieces of furniture, clothes and jewellery, and electrical items including IT hardware) for assessment and, where possible, repair. To find out more and to keep up to date as plans develop, go to www.facebook.com/RoystonRepairCafe You can continue the RoystonConnects discussion online by going to www.twitter.com/ #roystonconnects and www.streetlife.com

ROYSIA WOMEN’S CLUB
During November Colin Evans came to speak about Caremark, a homecare provider he runs in North Herts and Stevenage. It offers personal and professional care and support to people in their own homes and within their local communities. On another evening Sarah Boylan gave a demonstration of Jamie Oliver’s cookware. She brought along a huge selection developed by this famous chef which we were able to order or buy. Just in time for Christmas presents! We also enjoyed a coach trip mid month, to visit the London Silver Vaults, an internationallyrenowned centre for English silverware and jewellery. After lunch in Hatton Gardens we walked to the Museum of London to see the major exhibition: ‘The Cheapside Hoard: London’s Lost Jewells’, the world’s largest and most exquisite cache of Elizabethan and Stuart jewellery discovered in 1912 under a cellar floor in London’s Cheapside – a truly wonderful and historic exhibition. We ended November with our Christmas social of cheese and wine and the grand draw for the festive Christmas hampers. Funds raised by the sale of raffle tickets go towards our charity for the year, The Pituitary Trust. During December members can attend the NAWC Christmas Carol Service in London. We celebrate the last meeting of 2013 with our Christmas Dinner at the Heath Sports Club, a much enjoyed evening and look forward to 2014 when we celebrate our 40th anniversary. New members are always welcome. Why not join one of our meetings held in the Town Hall on Monday evenings which start at 8pm. Speaker meetings end at 10pm and Social Evenings at 9.30pm. For further details about Roysia Women’s Club please contact Wendy Pearce 01763 231381 or Mavis Ingle 01763 222524 or email: roysia10@yahoo.co.uk.

In November we were entertained by Ray Bomber playing his Clarinet and Accordion. He is a retired Language teacher who started playing his Parents piano when he was 9 and the Clarinet when he was 13. He later taught himself the accordion. He played “ Strangers on the Shore”,which of course we all knew. Then several tunes on the Accordion. We finished with a sing - a- long of old time songs. The competition for a Candlestick was won by Marian Chamberlain and the first prize in the raffle by Florence Smith This month we celebrate our 90th. Birthday and are having a Lunch organised by the Committee at the Cambridge Motel. We are awarding a Bursary for a course at the W.I. College( Denman) and Valerie Hurst was the lucky recipient. This W.I. was started by 2 Ladies, Lady Newman and Mrs. Titchmarsh who met at Royston Railway Station with their young children and wanted to join an organisation where Women could get together on their own. They had 200 Applicants at the start. The next meeting is on the12 th December in the Heritage Hall when we shall be celebrating the Birthday. If you would like to know more about our Institute please contact our President Helen Barrett on 01763 849122 .

The speaker at our November meeting was John Neal, who entertained us with a talk entitled “Grandma’s London”. Slides from John’s large collection of postcards gave a social insight into Victorian times as well as the twenties and thirties. It was fascinating to see the fashions and modes of transport through the various decades. The messages on the postcards were short and to the point. A postcard could be despatched in the morning and delivered within a few hours, in time to let a friend know that you would visit them that afternoon. One stamped and dated postcard from Paris showed that it had been posted one day and delivered the next. A scene of a City of London street showed an Express Delivery cart – a carriage drawn by two horses. Views of famous landmarks and London’s skyline reminded us just how much has changed - St Paul’s was once regarded as the tallest building in London. A thoroughly entertaining evening was enjoyed by all. Royston Townswomen’s Guild meets on the first Friday of each month, next meeting 6 December. If you would like to know more about our friendly welcoming group do please contact our Chairman, Ellizabeth Hollamby on 01763 246347

The price remains the same as the last two years £35, however, this year for the first weekend of 30th November/1st December all trees will be £30. Royston Heath has proved to be an excellent site to select your tree with ample room to have a good look at the trees and plenty of space to park your vehicle. The Heath Sports Club always has excellent homemade soups and fresh bread if you need to warm up. Trees will only be available at weekends on the following dates: 30th November, 1st, 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, 21st & 22nd December. Once you have selected your tree it will be netted and ready for collection or carried to your car. Half page Villages ad_Layout 1 15/11/2013 14:06 Page 1

FLOCK TO THE SHOPS A NATIVITY SHEEP TRAIL
Look out for a flock of sheep in the shops in and around Royston’s High Street, from 1st - 15th December. The flock all have individual characters and are preparing to stay for two weeks. The sheep will have a large ticket round their necks and the shop keeper will have chosen a name and written it on the ticket. To join in simply collect a form from the Carols for the Community event on Sunday 1st December where Flock to the Shops will be launched or collect a form from Royston Library, Ladds, The Stationery Cupboard or Holland & Barrett. Then go to the shops taking part and search for the sheep and LEFT TO RIGHT: STEPH WORRALL, LYNDA MALLOWS, write its name on the form in the space below the MARGARET MACCORMACK & LYNN BURGESS (LIBRARY MANAGER) shop name. When you have found all the flock, simply post your entry in one of the boxes at the above venues. Have Fun!! On Sunday 22nd December at 3:00pm at the Coombes Community Centre Burns Road Ignite Community Church invite you to come and have a celebration for FLOCK TO THE SHOPS. Winners will receive their prizes and there will be sheep creativity and the sheep will be back in the large Nativity Scene. We will be serving tea and sheep cakes and biscuits. THE HISTORY OF ROYSTON TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB 1875 -2012
On Thursday 5th December at 8pm in the Old Bull Hotel, Royston Town’s current President, Alan Barlow will be launching a brand new book charting the history of the club over a period of 138 years. When the Listing caught up with Alan earlier in the week he told us ‘ I first set out in the summer of 2008 to start writing the book and naively believed I’d have it finished inside 18 months. How wrong I was and it has taken me over five and half years to finish it and bring to publication. ‘The book is my legacy to the club and reflects my passion for non league football in general and Royston Town in particular. I first got involved in the club as a player in 1975 and my involvement has continued unbroken in one form or another for 38 years.’ The book has been produced as quality hardback containing over 360 pages ALAN BARLOW and 300 images and it is quite clear that a tremendous amount of research has gone into producing it. This is a fascinating insight into one of Royston’s oldest sporting organisation and reveals for the first time many previously unreported facts about the Club and the people who have been involved in it over the decades. Even for those who are not avid football fans the book provides many interesting perspectives on the social history of the town and many well known Royston personalities and families. ‘I doubt it will ever become a best seller but a lot of people have expressed interest in buying a copy and prelaunch orders have been very healthy’ commented Alan. Copies of the book can be purchased at a discounted price of £24.99 on the Launch night but if you want a quick preview then visit Alan’s website www.alanvbarlow.com which also has an on-line buying facility.
MELDRETH CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL The tenth annual Meldreth Church Christmas Tree Festival will be held over the weekend of Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December at Holy Trinity Church from 11am – 5pm. This year we expect to have about 35 trees, all beautifully decorated by local organisations, often with a theme relevant to their activity. All organisations in the village are invited to provide and decorate a tree and it is amazing to see how many organisations there are in such a small village. In addition, the church will be decorated with many candles and a large nativity scene - made by a local lady. Noah the donkey will again be making his regular appearance for most of both days and he will have the company of a Shetland pony. They will both be waiting to greet you just outside the church door. Homemade refreshments are available throughout both days: why not come and enjoy a choice of homemade soups or filled rolls at lunchtime and there will be plenty of homemade cakes available all day to enjoy with your tea or coffee. There will also be an excellent craft stall offering well made and highly original Christmas decorations and presents plus a produce stall selling homemade chutneys, jams, jellies, marmalade and cakes. By special request, “walnut babies” will again be available.

discover too late that there is a rival event scheduled for the same date? How annoying, but unavoidable because there is currently no easy way for Roystonians to have a calendar view a year or more in advance. This was the observation raised by a number of attendees at a recent Community Breakfast meeting at The Bull Inn. Tony Briar of the Rotary Club of Royston undertook to investigate what could be achieved and, at the following Community Breakfast meeting, demonstrated a workable solution based upon an electronic diary. All present agreed that the system showed great potential. Try it for yourselves at www. roystondiary.info. The idea is that the diary can also be embedded into a club or society’s own website and tailored to suit. For example, the Royston Football Club website could show a version of the diary but with only football fixtures and training sessions included, and yet have this same information available more widely across the rest of the community. These are early days but Tony is keen to drive this idea forward if there is enough interest. Initially the Royston Diary will be co-ordinated and run under the auspices of Royston Rotary Club with a view to handing it on elsewhere once it is running smoothly. If you think that your club, society, church or any other organisation would benefit from this free community diary please email your interest (via The Listing) to info@ townhousepublishing.co.uk.

BEAUTY BY ERICA
Beauty by Erica is run by fully trained beauty therapist Erica Mansfield at her home in Melbourn. Since leaving school, Erica trained at Cambridge Regional College for two years, before going on to work at Lizzie’s health and beauty salon in Saffron Walden where she stayed for nine happy years, gaining lots of experience and leaving only when she had her first son and moved to Melbourn from Saffron Walden. In Melbourn, Erica’s parents very kindly let her have a salon at their home in Mortlock Street, where she has worked for 12 years, meaning it’s been possible to grow her business yet have her children close by. In January of this year, Erica moved the salon to her home in Greengage Rise, Melbourn. Over the last few years she’s gained many regular clients, and looks forward to work, making her clients feel good and enjoying both chatting and listening while she works! Erica offers a full range of beauty treatments (please email or call for the full treatment list) and is looking for new clients in the run-up to Christmas and for the New Year. She’s pleased to introduce new LDN Spray tanning, which gives glorious results for the party season. FUNDRAISING ... WITH FACIAL HAIR
The men of local chartered accountancy firm, UHY-WKH Partnership, have been facing a fundraising challenge head on. Quite literally. Throughout November and now into December, they are joining together to change the face of men’s health. Starting with Movember, four of their finest took part to raise funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health. Now, putting away their shaving kits, six soon-to-be beardy accountants are taking part in Decembeard in order to raise money to fight against the second highest cancer killer – bowel cancer. You can see how the Motastic Accountants got on with the initial challenge of Movember at moteam.co/motastic-accountants. They will be keeping us all updated on their fundraising efforts for Decembeard via justgiving.com/ beardyaccountants. Any donations will be warmly received.

THE EFFECTIVE TEAM’S CHANGE MANAGEMENT WORKBOOK
Local author Elisabeth Goodman has published her first book in a new series under her and her husband’s local history and business book publishing label, RiverRhee ELISABETH Publishing. GOODMAN This very practical workbook reflects the author’s experience with business support groups that have been instrumental in shaping her approach to leading teams and to teaching and coaching individuals about Change Management. It encompasses personal journeys, reactions and resistance to change (the ‘people’ aspect of change) and the processes to use when planning and implementing various types of change. The principles and methodologies are accompanied by exercises for team or individual practise. The book is targeted at operational teams, but project teams will also benefit from its rich insights and depth. Copies are priced at ÂŁ10.00 each plus packaging and posting if ordered via the RiverRhee Publishing web page (http://www. riverrhee.com/publications/books/), or contact Elisabeth directly (0786 130 817 or elisabeth@ riverrhee.com

Winter is a great time to see the structure of your garden. The leaves have fallen and evergreen shrubs provide much of the interest, combined with stems and winter flowers. Here are just a few of my favourites. Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ would be in my top ten of winter specimens. It is an upright, deciduous shrub that is grown for its lovely clusters of small, fragrant, white and pink flowers. Plant it in an open position where you can enjoy the scent, in well drained, fertile soil. Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ (Dogwood) is grown for its beautiful coloured stems. It Cornus alba likes a well drained, fertile soil in an open position. Ideally it should be planted in ‘Sibirica’ groups to get maximum impact as shown in the photograph. Another pretty cornus is Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ just visible in the background of the photo. Euonymus fortune ‘Emerald and Gold’ is a good foliage plant for winter with green and gold variegation in the leaves. It is a low growing evergreen shrub that contrasts well with coloured stems. I have also seen it trained up walls and fences too. Buxus sempervirens (Box) is a classic garden evergreen and the main plant used for topiary. It is very versatile, evergreen shrub that is happy in well drained, fertile soil, in sun or shade. I love to use it as low hedging to delineate space in my garden designs and as mound forms to contrast with more upright plants such as Cornus. Saracococca hookeriana var. digyna is a lovely small, fragrant, evergreen shrub. It is charmingly also known as the Christmas box due to it looking like box and being in flower at Christmas time. It likes moist, fertile soil in sun or shade. I like to use it on the edge of paths where its scent can be enjoyed as you walk past. Mahonia x media ‘Charity’ is an upright, fragrant, evergreen shrub. It is a medium sized shrub with architectural foliage and gnarly stems. It is grown for its beautiful, large racemes of fragrant lemon-yellow flowers. It likes well drained, fertile soil, in sun or shade. It is best used in a mixed shrub border. PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
Local photographer, Clive Porter is currently displaying an exciting range of his work at Hogg’s Coffee House, located in the Corn Exchange, Market Hill, Royston. Clive, who is a member of both the Royston, and Melbourn Photographic Clubs, has been involved in photography since he was 14, when he was presented with a Kodak Box camera. He submitted his first photograph to a local newspaper in his home town of Colchester, just four years later. He still does work for the local press. Together, with his partner, Janet, he successfully operated a GEESE AT FOWLMERE photography and publishing business in Cambridge, becoming the largest BY CLIVE PORTER independent producer of postcards, and souvenirs in East Anglia for a number of years, producing items for Sandringham House, Kings College Chapel, and numerous other well known tourist locations before opening a small chain of retail outlets. The couple also produced their own range of greeting cards. Whilst HRH the Duke of Edinburgh was at Papworth Hospital over the Christmas of 2011, Clive presented him with one of his most famous pieces of work, being the image of the Indian Eagle Owl. The selection of photographs on display are evocative of Clive’s love for the English Countryside, flora and fauna, and his passion for steam engines, all of which are for sale, either as beautiful framed photographic images, or in just a quality mount, making them ideal beautiful Christmas Gifts.
