Our 101st cover depicts Royston’s magnificent triple commemorative sculpture at the head of the Coombes Hole underpass beside the junction of Melbourn Road and Green Street. Sustrans, the leading UK charity that enables people to travel by foot, bike or public transport, contributed to funding for the town’s Coombes Hole underpass and upgrade of the cycle lane network. As part of this investment, three life-size steel sculptures of local characters were created. The display features a town crier, King James I and classical BRIT award-winner Alison Balsom, making a memorable sight in any weather, but particularly so in the exceptional snow-like hoar frost that carpeted the town one day last winter. WELCOME

To the January issue of The Listing Our January issue is full of healthy tips to keep you active this month, from our packed health and beauty pages with tips on staying motivated with your new exercise regime and news of a wide range of fitness activities on offer in the Royston area. Dance, fitness, bootcamps, gym, pilates, personal training, kickboxing, zumba and jazzercise all feature so no excuses... get active this January! Read the articles from three of our vital organisations: Royston Time Bank, the Volunteer Centre and Home-Start. Each one can help you in a variety of ways, offering voluntary work or social opportunities, all designed to keep you feeling connected and cared for in our increasingly isolated society. Not only does volunteering give you a sense of well-being as you give something back to society but it connects you with others, meaning you can make new friends, develop new relationships and keep active. The Time Bank is an organised skills-swap with a social side, allowing you to share your skills and abilties with an appreciative group. Giving works wonders for your mind and body, so make this year your time to get involved in your local community.

OUT & ABOUT CADS Presents...

robin hood and the babes in the wood

If you go down to the woods today... You’d better watch out for the vicious bunnies! Once again CADS are gearing up to present Royston’s annual family pantomime. Following September’s much acclaimed Little Shop of Horrors, this year’s production is Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood, with all the fun and silliness that goes with panto. And family pantomime is a very apt description as there are at least nine family links within cast and crew: parent and child, sisters, and husband and wife teams are all represented and even more will be helping come the actual performances. There are both familiar and new faces on and off stage and several people are stepping into roles that they have not experienced before. Once again parents of autistic children are welcome to come along to the dress rehearsal on 19th Jan, to familiarize the children with the unusual noises and sights of the show before coming to the actual performance, and at the performance there will be helpful booklets available. After the last performance there will be the presentation of the Fred Sillence and Lizzie Houghton awards. The former is for outstanding contribution to the performing arts over the past 12 months and the latter is open to those 18 and under who have made an outstanding contribution to youth theatre over the same period. Both are open to anyone from Royston or the surrounding villages. Nominations, with reasons, are welcome and should reach CADS’ secretary, Tamsin Cowley by Friday 17th Jan. Details for nominations can be found on the CADS website. Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood will be performed at Meridian School on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th, Friday 31st January and Sat 1st February. Evening performances are at 7.30pm, with matinees on the Saturdays at 2pm. Tickets are £10 for adults and £7 for children, students and over60s. Tickets can be booked free online with credit or debit card via the CADS website, www.cadsroyston.org.uk, or by calling 07925 674 967.

recycle in 2014

Since North Herts District Council (NHDC) introduced new waste and recycling collections earlier this year, initial results indicate the amount of waste being recycled has increased from below 50% to over 56%. If this trend continues, it would mean 1000 tonnes less going to landfill from North Herts every month. It currently costs Council taxpayers over £100 for every tonne of waste sent to landfill, so NHDC’s new collection service could lead to savings of over £1 million every year on the cost of sending waste to landfill. So keep up the good work everyone!

Christmas Tree Recycling

Around 250 tonnes of real Christmas trees are thrown out after Christmas in the UK - please remember to recycle yours. Ensure all decorations, nettings, pots and stands are removed - these items do not compost so your tree will not be collected if these items remain on it.

If you live in North Herts District Council areas:

Place your real Christmas tree next to your brown bin for collection. In partnership with local garden centres, we will also be collecting real Christmas trees until 17 January 2014 from • Bickerdikes Garden Centre Norton Road, Letchworth • Tapps Garden Centre Wallington Road, Baldock • Wyevale Garden Centre Cambridge Road, Hitchin

If you live in South Cambridgeshire District Council areas:

Real Christmas trees can be cut up into small pieces and put in your green bin or taken to local household recycling centres at Milton and Thriplow for composting.

WI PM

The WI PM group recently celebrated their 90th birthday, and continued the celebrations at their December meeting. After mulled wine and the usual business they exchanged Christmas Cards and then proceeded with games and quizzes. Everyone entered into the spirit of feely bags and number, alphabet and jumbled town puzzles before enjoying tea with mince pies. Entertainment was provided by Jean Emes and her ukulele band and a fun sing-song. The Competition was won by Anne Harrison and the Raffle by Gwen Simmons. The next meeting is on January 9th at 1.45pm in the Heritage Hall when Martin Copping will be giving a talk on St.Paul’s Cathedral. If you would like information about the institute please phone 01763 261775.

ROYSTON TIME BANK

HEALTH & wELLbEing

When Audrey and her husband first moved from Therfield to Royston ten years ago, she was working and leading quite an independent life. Unfortunately she was made redundant and shortly after she developed AMD, a condition that affects people’s eye sight. Due to this Audrey was no longer able to drive and had to rely on her husband to get around. She also knew very few people in Royston. Because of these factors, Audrey started to feel quite isolated. She felt as if she had lost her independence and wasn’t really able to get out and about to meet new people. She wanted something to keep her occupied and also give her the chance to get to know others in the community. She read an article about the Royston Time Bank and felt that the scheme was just what she was looking for. Time Bank, a project managed by NHCVS, is a vibrant community skills exchange which enables people to share their abilities and knowledge with others in the community whilst earning time credits. They can then use those credits to get help with something they need or learn a new skill. People can offer specific skills such as sewing, DIY, fixing computers or it could just be the ability to befriend, walk a dog or drive someone to the doctors. After joining Time Bank Audrey became part of the Time Bank Knitting group which knits goods to donate to charities and also started to attend the monthly Time Bank Cafe’s which give members the opportunity to get together, share their skills and have a bit of fun. The activities that have taken place range from quizzes to science themed cafes to cake decorating. Audrey said “Time Bank has given me the chance to get to make new friends, become part of the community and feel useful. It has allowed me to carry on using my skills and do the things I enjoy. Before, I didn’t really get to use my baking skills as I didn’t see the point in baking for just me and my husband but since joining this scheme my baking skills have been in high demand and I always make treats for the monthly cafes.” She added “I have enjoyed helping others by doing simple jobs for them such as shopping, and it has also been beneficial for me as I have been able to get help with my computer. I feel that so many people could not only benefit from Time Bank but also get a great deal of enjoyment out of it.” Savita the Time Bank administrator said “The Time Bank is open to everyone and values all skills equally. Time Bank currently operates across North Herts, Stevenage, Royston, Buntingford and the surrounding villages.” She also said “We would like to thank Councillor Tony Hunter and Herts County Council for the support they have given to Royston Time Bank.”

If you would like to find out more or join the Time Bank please visit www.mytimebank.org.uk or contact us on 01462 689405 or at timebank@nhcvs.org. uk.

Sincere thanks go to all those who voted and helped this worthwhile organisation, which offers door-to-door transport for people living in Royston and the surrounding villages of North & East Hertfordshire and South Cambridgeshire who are unable to use conventional public transport and do not have the use of a car. The £3000 funds received will go towards a new minibus. Thanks are also extended to Alan Tobin of the British Queen in Meldreth, who kindly made a £245 donation with the proceeds from their carol-singing evening held on December 9th.

royston ladies circle

Royston Ladies Circle has been running for over two years having rechartered in March 2011. It is currently going from strength to strength with 13 members enjoying meeting twice a month. Whilst numbers are strong, there is always room for more. Any lady aged between 18-45 years is invited to come along and get involved. Ladies Circle has had a super year of fun, friendship and laughter, carrying out activities such as a bread making class, a theatre trip, a dance class, a recipe swap evening, a Christmas decoration making class, a visit to a chilli farm, a pamper evening and much more. Future events include a belly dancing class, bowling, bike ride and Segway driving to name a few! There is also the fundraising element. This year we have assisted the Round Table with the Santa sleigh, including running the Melbourn sleigh evening and running the new Litlington evening run. Ladies Circle also ran a quiz night at Meldreth village hall, attracting over 90 people and raising over £900. Requests have been made for funding which we have supported, including donating some money to the Friends of Chernobyl charity so that children visiting Melbourn from Belarus could buy a pair of shoes to take home with them, Home Start and other local causes. Whilst the name is Royston Ladies Circle, the group has attracted members from many surrounding villages such as Bassingbourn, Melbourn, Arrington, Harston and Litlington. We meet every second and third Thursday evening of the month. If you would be interested in getting involved with Ladies Circle, or believe we might be able to help with a fund raising project that you are involved in, then please contact the current Chair, Hannah Paradis on 01763220967.

Red Onion Soup with Melting Gruyere Croutons12/10/2013

021013.indd 1

Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes

After the indulgence and expense of Christmas and the New Year, this hearty soup is the perfect antidote. Ideal for a warming winter lunch or supper it’s simple to make, tastes delicious and doesn’t cost a fortune.

Ingredients:

• 2 tbsp olive oil • 15g butter • 650g small red onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar • 1 tbsp flour • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard • 1.2litres beef or vegetable stock • Few sprigs fresh thyme, plus extra to garnish • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 8 thin slices day old French bread • 75g Gruyere cheese, grated

Heat the oil and butter in a large, deep heavy-based saucepan until the butter is sizzling. Add all the sliced onions and cook very gently over a low heat for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Sprinkle over the sugar and cover and cook for a further 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are very soft and golden. Stir in the flour and half the mustard and cook for 1 minute, then gradually stir in the stock. Add the thyme sprigs, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper (see Tip) and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 35-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust the seasoning to taste. Lightly toast the slices of French bread on one side. Spread the untoasted sides with the rest of the mustard and top with the grated Gruyere cheese. Pop under a hot grill for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling. Ladle the soup into warmed bowls and top each with two hot Gruyere croutons. Serve immediately garnished with thyme sprigs.

services for older people

Community Navigators – information on activities and services for older people Care Network’s Community Navigator Project is working with local communities to ensure older people have help to find information about local activities and services. The information could be anything from finding leisure activities, to where to get financial advice, or help to maintain independence at home. We recently helped a gentleman of 87 who lives in a small rural village. He can drive but had been asked not to pending some treatment on his eyes. When a Community Navigator volunteer got in touch and explained that the local Community Car Scheme could pick him up and take him to appointments at the GP he told us that would “change his life”. If you know someone who might benefit from a chat with a local Community Navigator then there are three ways to link with the project:1. By passing on the contact details below you will enable people to find help; 2. By inviting the Community Navigator Area Coordinator to your group’s meetings, they will be able to explain what the project does and how it can help; 3. By becoming a Navigator, you will receive training to help you provide people with information, with support from the local Community Navigator Area Coordinator. To find out more about how you can link with the Community Navigator project please get in touch with Area Coordinator Rob Wallace on 01954 212100 or Email: southcambs.navigators@carenetwork.org.uk *Please note this service is available to residents of Cambridgeshire villages *

With age, so they say, comes wisdom. However, there are sometimes lessons you wish you hadn’t learned. 1. When you pull an ugly face, it doesn’t stay with you as the wind changes. Age is going deliver that fate to you anyway. 2. Ailing animals don’t really go to a lovely farm in the country. Goldfish couldn’t live that long either, or change colour while you were at school. 3. Your uncle Bob - the one you really look like - wasn’t really your uncle after all... 4. Pickled onions won’t put hair on your chest, no matter how many you eat. Similarly, eating crusts won’t give you curly hair. 5. Grandparents weren’t always in dire need of soap and hankies when it came to presents. 6. Grown-ups got scared & sad too. 7. Even teachers didn’t know the answer to everything. 8. There was never a situation where long division or trignometry saved your life. 9. No one would ever love you as unconditionally as your mum and dad. 10. However hard you try, you can’t make weekends, summer holidays, or childhood itself last forever. © Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com Oakley A6 BW wb_Layout 1 29/07/2013 11:39 Page 1

EMBRACE IT? OR DISGRACE IT?

January, the time of year when hundreds of us choose to have a fresh fitness and lifestyle regime. New fitness trends, DVDs, classes, gym memberships and New Year resolutions will see us Going for Gold in January and slipping away by Spring! So, in 2014, will you EMBRACE IT? or DISGRACE IT? Let’s face it many of us want to be able to feel great, look healthier, drop a dress size, de-stress, improve our fitness levels, have a greater sense of wellbeing or just look fit! I believe that everyone can enhance their lifestyle through fitness and wellbeing which is why I want YOU to think about whether you are going to embrace it or disgrace it this year. EMBRACE IT • Finding what keeps you motivated to stay active is key • Try everything you see! The more you enjoy your chosen fitness activity, the higher your chance of keeping going • Go with friends, not only social but you’ll feel commited to a new class or club as you’ll never want to let your friends down! • Whether or not you already have a fitness/well being routine, always take on a fresh challenge with an end goal, great for motivation and refreshing for your mind • Keep it varied for an overall sense of fitness and well being. DISGRACE IT • Don’t over commit, trying to go from zero to hero in a week will just leave you feeling exhausted not exhilarated. • Dreading going to the gym or for a run or whatever activity you’ve chosen will see you giving up before March. Choose your fitness activity wisely • Boredom is not a great motivator. Change one thing about your fitness /activity routine every couple of months to keep you evolving and stopping the rot setting in. This doesn’t have to mean skip your favourite class as any good instructor will change the format regularly - perhaps go outside on your bike instead of in the gym, just a simple change • Everytime you think you don’t want to do your fitness / activity routine, just think how good you always feel after - focus on the result not the process. Use EMBRACE IT or DISGRACE IT rules to keep motivated and to stick with your fitness / lifestyle changes for 2014. Royston has everything on offer from pilates, yoga and dance, to team sports, gym challenges and much much more, there really is no excuse! whaddon village hall

Whaddon Village Hall has undergone a renovation. The building was once an old Victorian School, pretty to look at but lacking any modern facilities (such as heating in the winter). The Village of Whaddon is not huge, with approximately 250 houses but a small team of dedicated fundraisers have spent the last ten years raising money to bring their hall into the 21st century. Eureka!!! At last the renovation has just been completed and the larger part of the hall now has underfloor heating, insulation, a new kitchen and stunning new lighting system. Funding has been obtained from the local Parish Council and grants obtained from Amey Cespa, South Cambs District Council, plus many other smaller grants to enable the project to be completed to a really good standard. For bookings, please call 01223 207703

New Year - New Shoes!

How do you buy your sports shoes? Online, in a discount sports store or because they ‘look good’? If so, then you might be wearing the wrong shoe. If you are flat-footed and/or have weak ankles or knees, then you need a shoe which supports your foot and corrects any problems. We specialise in putting you in the right shoe for your foot and leg type. It’s all part of our fantastic, friendly service. ‘Gait’ analysis does not always give the correct fit so we offer podiatry fit and look at your feet as a podiatrist would - it’s simple, easy and accurate. We are a super-friendly running specialist and give advice and support to all our local runners, cyclists and swimmers. We are approachable and participate in all the sports which we support. We stock shoes from: Asics, Brooks, Hoka One One, Mizuno, New Balance, Saucony and clothing from a wide-range of running, cycling and swimming specialists.

In the garden... January

Winter is a fantastic time to appreciate berries in the garden. There are many shrubs that offer a great display of berries during the winter months and also an important source of food for our birds to feast on. Here are just a few of my favourites. Cotoneaster lacteus would be in my top ten. It is a large evergreen shrub with arching branches of matt, dark green, oval leaves. The large clusters of orange- red berries give a fantastic show. Plant it in an open position, in well drained, fertile soil. I use it in shelterbelt plantings or as an informal hedging plant. Ilex aquifolium ‘Argentea Marginata’ is a variegated female holly. The foliage Variegated Holly Bush has a pretty golden margin to the leaf and clusters of red berries. Like all female berrying hollies it will need a male plant close by for pollination. It is great as a specimen plant or as part of a mixed shrub planting scheme in well drained, fertile soil, in an open position. Pyracantha ‘Orange Glow’ as the name suggests produces clusters of orange berries, much loved by the birds. It is a vigorous evergreen shrub with spiny branches. It is useful as security plant on boundary fences and can be trained effectively onto wires. Plant in well drained, fertile soil and the black birds will be for ever grateful. Malus ‘Red Sentinel’ is one of my favourite fruiting crab apples. It is grown for its clusters of glossy, cherry like fruits that mature to bright red and last well into winter. Like all crab apples it produces white blossom in the spring, but its main season is the winter. It is a great specimen tree for the smaller garden. Malus ‘John Downie’ is another very pretty crab apple with a more orange red, elongated fruit. Viburnum rhytidophyllum is a much underrated large, leathery leaved evergreen shrub. It produces small, white tubular flowers in late spring followed by clusters of pretty red berries which persist into the winter ripening to black. It is a bit different and well worth considering for a mixed shrub border. Why not get out this winter and embrace the changing of the seasons?! The University Botanic Garden Cambridge and Anglesey Abbey both have good winter gardens and coffee shops to warm up in afterwards. So wrap up and get out into the garden!
