WELCOME
To the July issue of The Listing
The most exciting news this month is the launch of the new community cinema in Royston. The Royston Picture Palace incorporates digital state of the art technology into the 19th Century town hall, creating an exciting cinema experience right here in the town centre. The films are a mix of big box office successes and wellregarded recent releases, and are showing on Friday and Saturday evenings from the end of June. You can book tickets online at www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk or buy from Royston Library. There has been a lot of curiousity and excitement in the town with regards the cinema so we are sure the people of Royston and beyond will support their community cinema wholeheartedly in the weeks, months and years to come. Find out more on page 5. Also this month, retail group Royston Means Business have organised a Royston Summer Rocks event in the town centre on Saturday 6th July. Expect fun for all the family and also look out for the Summer Soul event that afternoon, organised by Ad Hoc Bar and Kitchen, with soulful grooves and funky beats to entertain you into the evening. Our pages bring you news of much much more going on in the local area, plus local businesses, organisations and sports. There is no excuse to stay at home this summer!

We are delighted to announce that the Royston Picture Palace opened its doors at the end of June as Royston’s own community cinema. The cinema is located in Royston Town Hall, which has undergone a complete refurbishment courtesy of Royston Town Council, in preparation for its new role. Staffed by volunteers from Royston and the surrounding villages, the cinema features state-of-the-art technology. The Royston Picture Palace is open Fridays and Saturdays, with doors opening at 6.45pm and movies starting at 7.30pm sharp (currently with no advert or trailers). Tickets cost £6.50 for adults and £5.50 for concessions.
So what is ‘community cinema’?
It is cinema run for the community, by the community. What that means in practice is that the cinema is staffed by unpaid volunteers and all the proceeds are ploughed back into the cinema (with any ‘profits’ donated to local good causes). This means that all prices are kept as low as possible whilst continuing to book mainstream films.
The cinema experience
Expect the full cinema experience, complete with popcorn and ice cream! Pretty much the entire Town Hall has been refurbished by Royston Town Council, giving a smart feel to the 19th Century building. This includes a lift for the disabled, double-glazed windows and an air cooling system in the upper hall, new toilets and repainting throughout. Inside, Royston First, funded by Royston’s businesses, has installed custom-built seating, a 7 metre wide retractable screen and a state-of-the-art digital projection and 17 speaker sound system.
Films
Expect to see a broad range of films … especially initially when the organisers are trialling different genres to determine what Roystonians want to see. The films are potentially the same as those screened in the commercial cinema chains, but on average 6-8 weeks behind the general of ‘first’ release. The initial schedule includes the films with the highest attendance figures elsewhere in the UK such as Iron Man 3 and Fast & Furious 6 … whilst at the same time including one or two of the bigger hits from the recent past (such as Skyfall and The Hobbit). These are mixed in with highly regarded releases such as Side Effects and The Place Beyond the Pines.
How to book
Tickets are competitively priced at £6.50 for adults and £5.50 for concessions. The free parking and the fact that many people will walk to the cinema, ensure that a night at Royston Picture Palace is excellent value!
Book online at www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk or pop into Royston Library to buy tickets. You may be able to buy tickets on the door but booking is recommended to avoid disappointment!
How to volunteer
Anyone who wants to help with the cinema should visit the ‘volunteers’ section of the website www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk

“Our Big Gig”
The Arts Council is funding musical events in England between 11th and 14th July this year, under the banner of “Our Big Gig”. These events are to promote and inspire music in the community as well as increase participation in music and promote social cohesion. Over 300 live musical performances are taking place, including one here in Royston. The Big Band Extravaganza takes place on on Sunday 14th July at The Old Bull Hotel commencing at 12 noon. Participating groups will be:
The Opus 17 Swing Band
Our own Royston based 17 piece big band formed 15 years ago. The main repertoire is traditional big band music from the 40’s. Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and others of the era. The band boasts several current and retired professional musicians together with enthusiastic amateurs. The band often plays at 1940’s events and has authentic “Sun Tan” uniforms as worn by The Glenn Miller Orchestra.
The Bedford Contemporary Big Band
Is led by Paul Carter, son of the trumpeter Nigel, who played lead trumpet with the BBC Big Band for nearly 40 years. As their name suggests they draw more on modern big band repertoire. On 14th July they will also be fronting two vocalists with the band.
The Big Band of Presdales School, Ware
The girls of Presdales School Big band under the direction of their music tutor Miss Jo Cheetham will open the proceedings on 14th July. They play a mix of modern and traditional big band charts.
Footlights Quartet
A foursome of fabulous ladies who sing your favourite songs in four part harmony harmony. They are all members of the well-respected Phoenix Chorus from Potton. Theirs is guaranteed to be a varied and entertailing performance. Admission to this event is free. Refreshments will be available to purchase from the barbecue. See The Listing what’s on guide for a snapshot of “Our Big Gig” events locally.

decoration, colour & design for your home
My name is Linda Jest and I am a female painter and decorator based in Melbourn - something that the Melbourn area definitely has a shortage of! Over the past few years, my husband and I have worked together developing our own properties, and I have had responsibilty for designing the interiors. I have a natural flair for interior decoration and, along with the knowledge I’ve gained over the past number of years, decided to pursue this passion as a career. I attended a specialist training course where I learnt the latest technologies in painting and wallpapering plus the basics in running my own business and am now pleased to offer my interior painting and decorating, combined with my colour and design service, in the local area. I have a great eye for colour and accessories and “how to dress a room”, and can help advise you on your chosen colour schemes and themes. I take great pride in my work, paying a great deal of attention to the detail and the overall effect of the room, and the finished results speak for themselves. My natural flair for interior decoration, together with my experience as a painter/decorator, makes me an ideal choice in the local area for the following decorating services: • All interior decorating • Wallpapering • Painting – ceilings, walls, woodwork – all finishes • Advice on colour schemes • Colour and design advice • Stencil work So for your next decorating project please give me a call at home on 01763 261042 or mobile 0784 645 7797 or if you prefer e-mail me Lindajest@virginmedia.com I offer free competitive quotes.

Palazzo Recipe of the Month: Crocche di Patate
These fried mozzerella bites make a delicious starter or snack to serve with drinks.
Ingredients
6 Large potatoes 4 ounces mozzarella cheese, cut into length strips 1 cup flour 1 cup milk 2 eggs, beaten 2 tablespoons Parmesan, finely grated 1/2 teaspoon dried basil Salt and pepper Breadcrumbs Vegetable oil (for frying) Serves 4
Method 1. Peel and dice the potatoes then boil in salted water until completely cooked. Drain off and mash until a smooth texture then season well. (It makes the next step easier if you chill the mashed potatoes overnight, however this is not mandatory.) 2. To make the Crocche, take a large spoonful of the mashed potato and wrap around the mozzarella slices then place on greaseproof paper, cover with cling film and place into the freezer for an hour. 3. Fill a frying pan with an inch of vegetable oil and heat up. 4. Make a batter in a deep bowl by lightly whisking the flour, eggs, salt and pepper, parmesan and basil. 5. Roll each of the potato logs around in the batter very quickly to cover with a thin layer of batter then cover in the breadcrumbs. 6. Drop each Crocche into the hot oil and fry until they are a deep golden brown, then drain off any excess oil with paper towel. Serve with a spicy tomato dipping sauce or garlic mayonnaise. Buon Appetito!

Welcome to the town centre...
a taste of italy in the town
Una Salumeria Italiana, or Italian Delicatessen, is proud to open its doors on Royston High Street. Avellino’s launched on 1st June and is already proving to be a hit with the people of Royston. Avellino’s is named after a town in Southern Italy, not far from Naples. You may have heard of it in The Sopranos as it’s where the fictional character Tony Soprano is from, yet more importantly it’s where owners Sabino and Giuseppina Russo originate from. The brother and sister team are joined by their father Alfonso Russo who works in the shop during the week. Alfonso has been in catering for decades, and before him, his uncle in Italy had a salumeria in his home village of Prata di Principato Ultra, so fine italian food is in the family! The Russo family have always wanted to open a delicatessen and when they came to live in Royston four years ago, discussed the possibility of doing something in the town. It was just an idea at first but this year the opportunity to enter a vacant shop arose and they decided to take the plunge. Sabino explains: “We have grown to really love this town since moving here from London. We really hope the business has brightened the High Street, as we really feel it deserves a better reputation than it sometimes seems to have. We hope that our story will encourage others to be brave and open new businesses in the town centre that we all love so dearly. We all need to support small businesses!” Sabino knows that in today’s world people are a lot more savvy when it comes to food and believes that the people of Royston deserve and want high quality Italian products as opposed to some of the mediocre tasting mass produced supermarket items. This family business sells only imported items from Italy, some of which the Russo family

have sourced ourselves. So far so good, and introducing Alfonso, Sabino and Royston to new Giuseppina Russo at Italian tastes is a Avellino’s success. Sabino extends his thanks to everyone who’s supported Avellino’s so far, and looks forward to welcoming more people over the coming weeks. “Royston appears to have taken to us, so thank you Royston!” Avellino’s, 26a High Street, Royston

We are delighted to announce that Marie Munro from Royston-based charity Youth at Risk won the bottle of pink bubbly on our stand at Royston Open Secrets. Congratulations Marie! Youth at Risk is celebrating 21 years of successfully transforming the lives of young people. We are a national charity based in Royston and in celebrating our coming of age we have launched our Club 21. This club has been established to help us raise £210,000.00 during our 21st year and we are looking for marie munro from people to help us youth at risk with achieve this. Part her winning bottle of of this is that we bubbly are looking for 21 people who are willing to raise £21.00 in total over a period of 21 days by doing something fun that they really enjoy. This could be hosting a dinner party for a few friends or taking on a sponsored event such us running/walking or swimming. An exciting new development is that we are now able to offer coaching sessions for young people from our Royston offices. This is especially aimed at young people who have low motivation and would like to achieve more, those who would like to increase their confidence and make the most of opportunities available to them. For enquiries on either Club 21 or the coaching for young people please get in touch with Marie Munro on 01763 241120 or email: marie@youthatrisk.org.uk

Ashwell’s Fight Against Cancer (A.F.A.C) Hampers and Champers Revue
Ashwell’s Fight Against Cancer has been set up by Christine Scholfield to support the lesser known forms of cancer treatment that do not receive the levels of fundraising support available to those with a higher profile. Both events are raising funds in support of developments at Addenbrooke’s Hospital into cancers of the liver and the upper GI tract. Following the success of a ‘Diamond Revue’ in 2010 that raised £2,800, Christine and a group of friends from Ashwell are staging a ‘Hampers and Champers’ Revue on Saturday 20th July at 8pm. This action-packed revue features local artistes performing a series of music, sketches and comedy at Ashwell Village Hall. This entertaining event includes supper and the added attraction of the chance to ‘win a diamond’ by purchasing a glass of champagne – one of which will contain a diamond with a retail value of more than £1000! Pilates Mat Work Classes: Dress code? Henley! Striped shirts/jackets/ Arrington, Baldock, Buntingford bow tie/boaters/summer dresses. Tickets are Reed, Royston, Therfield £20 per person. how to Make an Exhibition of Yourself! Last week, I went to two very different exhibitions. The first was Royston Open Secrets; the popular annual fun day, with about a hundred local organisations and businesses spread over 5 acres of the Heath – what a great day! And then yesterday I was at Cereals 2013, an agricultural event near Lincoln with julian berry almost 500 exhibitors covering a 150 acre site. Here are a few tips for having a successful show – based on what most Open Secrets exhibitors did very well and many of the international corporations failed to do. The main purpose of any stand is to attract passers-by and engage with them, particularly those who are likely to benefit from whatever it is you are ‘selling’. So know who you’re there to meet, and know what memory you want them to walk way with. Make sure everyone knows the objectives of the day – collecting contact details, handing out leaflets, making sales or booking of future appointments and so on. Then, make sure your stand looks professional and uncluttered, with your benefits message clearly visible from a distance. In your literature and graphics, I recommend you avoid meaningless marketing-speak like ‘solutions provider’, ‘for all your needs’, ‘your expert partner’, ‘independent specialist’ and other phrases designed to make you feel good but that do nothing for your audience. And finally the people. Many stands at Cereals had huddles of chatting salesmen, or were populated by staff drinking coffee, eating sandwiches or checking emails. How does that make the prospect feel? The best stands had no eating, drinking or phoning going on (they did that elsewhere) and simply had well-informed staff who cared about their subject and wanted to share the information – they were happily busy all day. Booking has started for Open Secrets 2014, and if you’d like my full ‘Exhibiting Success’ guide, just email me and I’ll happily send you a copy.

Free advice for rural businesses
Free advice is available in a new scheme to help businesses based in rural areas or those looking to move out of the towns in North and East Hertfordshire. A specialist advisor is now on hand to businesses with fewer than six employees who want to move their business forward or diversify. Help is also available to people considering starting a business or in the process of setting one up. The scheme, set up by North Herts District Council (NHDC) and East Herts District Council (EHDC), is aimed at small businesses seeking help with the specific issues affecting companies based out-of-town, or those looking to move into rural areas. Cllr Tom Brindley, NHDC’s portfolio holder for planning, transport and enterprise, said: “The vitality of local businesses is important to everyone who lives and works in North Herts, not just those companies based in our four main towns but throughout the area. I would encourage everyone who owns a small rural business to get in touch and see what advice is available.” Paul Phillips, EHC’s Executive member for economic development, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the council to be able to support the various companies that exist throughout the rural areas of our district. We hope to see as many of our rural businesses as possible making full use of this free advice which is particularly welcome in difficult economic times.”
To make an appointment to meet with the Rural Business Advisor, Richard Hardiman, call him now on 07711 385220 or email richard.hardiman@eastherts.gov.uk. Meetings can be held at a location to suit.

In the garden... July
Horticulturalist Richard Arnott recommends seasonal plants for your garden. Richard lives in Melbourn with his family where he runs his garden design and build company, Garden Design Solutions.
The garden is really alive with activity now and summer is well and truly here. Spring trees, shrubs and perennials have begun to fade and now is the time for the summer plants to give a good performance. There is so much to enjoy. Climbing roses come into their own as summer progresses. The key thing with climbing plants is to give them a structure to grow on and keep tying the new growth in. I like to use galvanised wire and vine eyes for training on a house. Rosa ‘Madame Alfred Carriere’ is a beautiful classic climbing rose bred around 1879. Its white flowers emerge from pale pink buds to give good scent and continuous blooms. I have it trained over my cottage door and it is now filling the space nicely. Another favourite climbing rose is Rosa ‘Madame Gregoire Staechelin’. It has long pointed pink buds that open to give ruffled deep pearl pink flowers. The flowers are large and the scent is sweet. It makes a great table decoration for summer parties. Rosa ‘Iceberg’ is another sweetly scented white climber that is vigorous and will fill a space quickly. Most climbing roses have thorns but for something different why not try Rosa ‘Zephirine Drouhin’. It has pink semi-double, very fragrant flowers that keep coming with a little dead heading of course. It is very unusual for a climbing rose to be thornless so makes it ideal for a pergola or arch in a childfriendly garden. All roses like fertile soil and will benefit from a feed of bone meal and well rotted manure in the spring. I like to dead head the roses mentioned above to encourage repeat flowers and you can spray for black spot and aphids too. As climbing plants they want to grow up and this can leave bare legs lower down. Why not try growing a clematis up the legs such as white flowering Clematis www.thinkgardenthinkrichard.co.uk ‘Henryi’ or the lovely pink Clematis ‘Comtasse de Bouchard’.

Home Grown Herbs
by Pippa Greenwood
There’s a really reliable, easy, low-cost and low-effort way to add some zing to your meals; home-grown herbs. Many herbs are simple to raise from seed and if you start sowing now you should be able to have a plentiful supply of fresh, tasty herbs to add to salads, sandwiches, stews and stir-fries for months to come. All you need is a sunny window sill or balcony, or a well-drained, sunny spot in your garden, so why not sow a few pots and brighten up your cooking? First, find some good quality multi-purpose compost, your chosen herb seeds and some pots. Good-quality compost is well worth the little bit extra you need to pay. The style of pot is up to you – you may want to choose a classic Mediterranean feel with terracotta, or a stylish modern look, or perhaps a goodlooking plastic planter for longevity and light-weight characteristics that make it better for a balcony and easier to move about too. Whatever style you choose, bear in mind that plenty of drainage is essential, and that the smaller herbs do not need a deep root run, so there is no need for a very tall planter or pot. It is best to grow each type of herb in its own individual pot, so buy a selection of pots with a minimum diameter of 8cm. Once you have your pot to hand, put a broken flower pot or other drainage material in the base and then fill with good quality compost to within 1cm of the rim of the pot and firm it down, not too aggressively, but enough to ensure that there’s no subsidence later on. With large seeds such as coriander, position the seeds evenly on the compost surface. Sprinkle smaller seed thinly. The seeds need to be covered with compost so use your finger or a dibber (an old ballpoint pen or pencil will do) to gently press the seed in to the very surface of the compost and then drizzle more compost on top to the depth stated on the packet of seed. Water the compost thoroughly either carefully from above using a watering can with rose attached, or by standing the pot in a saucer of water for a few minutes until the compost surface is just moist. The advantage of watering from below is that you are less likely to disturb the seeds. The seeds generally germinate quite
july 13 • ISSUE 79
quickly and often within just a week or two you’ll have lots of tiny herbs. For shorter-lived herbs, such as coriander and basil its worth sowing in succession. All this means is that you need to use a small pot full of seed every few weeks, rather than sowing the whole packet in one go. This will give you a near constant supply of herbs and if you look at the number of seeds per packet you will soon see what amazing value they are. Once the herbs are up and growing strongly you can start to harvest them. Use sharp scissors or a sharp knife to cut off what you need; this way you’ll minimise damage to the growing plants and so help to keep them cropping for longer. As long as you keep the pots adequately watered, ideally by watering from the base, they should last for several weeks or months but make sure that the compost is not too wet or else your herb pots won’t last long. These plants are mostly of Mediterranean origin and hate wet feet. If at any stage you find that you’re not eating them fast enough and have an excess of herby foliage, store some for later use. Ice cubes give you a really great fresh-herb taste off-season. Just half fill the sections in an ice-cube tray with water. Add chopped fresh herbs to each section and top up with water. Label the tray as chopped herbs in ice can be difficult to identify. The attractive herb-filled ice cubes can then simply be popped whole in to stews and casseroles as and when you need them. Royston Open Secrets 2013
From the moment Andie Harper of BBC Radio Cambridgeshire opened the event with an impassioned speech about the many delights that Royston has to offer, until the final visitors left, the day buzzed with energy and enthusiasm. With a fantastic mix of businesses, community organisations and displays by local dance groups, in addition to a fun dog show and the popular historic vehicle show, Royston Open Secrets 2013 was a huge success with around 2000 people visiting the event over the course of the day. The annual event organised by a committee of local volunteers chaired by Linda Turner is now in its fifth year and getting bigger and better each year. The feedback from visitors and exhibitors has been great. In fact eleven businesses have already signed up for next year! If you run an SG8 Businesses and would like to take advantage of an early-bird booking offer and get a 20% discount off the normal price of £100 then get in touch with Linda Turner on Royston 01763 223216. But hurry as this offer is limited to the first 20 Businesses who sign up.
Royston Open Secrets 2014 is on Sunday 8th June 2014.
