OUT & ABOUT
American Invasion 1944 - 1945!
398th bombardment group and 55th fighter group Oversexed, overpaid, and over here, so the saying goes, but very many paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom from tyranny between 1943-1945 when the United States of America came to the United Kingdom. So it was in April 1944 the 398th Bombardment group (H) 8th Air Force 1st Air Division with four squadrons of the Flying Fortress B17 moved into the quiet and peaceful hamlet of Nuthampstead on land owned by Baron Dimsdale, which in late 1942 had been built into Station 131, an airfield 5 miles from Royston, 35 miles from London and 460 feet above sea level, the highest in East Anglia, the nearest to the capital and then, the most remote. Even Glen Miller and his band got lost returning to their HQ in Bedford following a concert at Station 131! Initially the Lockheed Lightnings of the 55th Fighter Group were first on the Base but by April 1944 to the end of the war in May 1945 the bomber group, the last to be stationed in England, were the sole occupants, flying in daylight over Germany and occupied Europe. The first 398th mission took place on May 6th 1944 and the last – its 195th – on April 25th 1945. Within that time 296 airmen lost their lives including their first Commanding Officer, Colonel Frank Hunter leading the Group in a raid on rail yards in Neuss, Germany, and 298 became prisoners of war. Seventy aircraft were lost in combat and a further 50 abandoned after forced landings. In October 1944 a B17 failed to gain height on take off and skimming the fields and hedgerows it flew straight into the mound (Motte) of the once Norman Castle, on the edge of the Churchyard of St. George of Anstey. It was the mound which prevented the church from destruction. The Group’s last mission of the war and the very last of the 8th Air Force was to

Pilson, in what was then Czechoslovakia. They lost two aircraft to (flak), anti aircraft fire, the last American bombers to be lost in WWII. Since 1982 local people have welcomed veterans and their families back on bi-annual visits, and over the years have entertained them with nostalgic visits including Cambridge American Cemetery and light aircraft flights from the old air field. In recent years with the help of our UK friends of the 398th, funds have been raised to erect two memorials adjacent to the ‘The Woodman Inn’ in Nuthampstead to the 55th Fighter Group and he 398th Bombardment Group and a magnificent stained glass window in St. George Church, Anstey saved by a miracle in 1944. Currently a small Garden of Remembrance is being constructed to the rear of the Woodman Inn which will be open to view on Saturday 14th June following the remembrance service.
Saturday 14th June – 11am: Remembrance 398th Bombardment Group and 55th Fighter Group Veterans & Families, Woodman Inn, Nuthampstead. Sunday 15th June: Thanksgiving Service, St. George, Anstey in memory of those who flew from Nuthampstead Airfield in 1944-1945.

Friends of Reed Church Jazz in the (School) Garden
Following on from Reed First School Centenary Celebrations, FoRC has been graciously offered the use of the school grounds and facilities for the now annual extravaganza normally known as “Jazz in the Garden”, from 12:00 ‘til 16:00 on 29th June. There will be music provided by The Savoy Jazz Band and a licensed bar, with wonderful food as usual at this much relished event . Tickets are priced at £15 for adults and £35 for a family, available from Di’ Bamford (01763 848481) and Liz’ Jakeman (01763 848398). Please book early as sunshine is (almost) guaranteed, and if numbers are known beforehand it will make catering that much easier. Last year’s event was so popular that we were almost forced to turn people away at the gate, so get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Please remember that is a licensed charity event and those who arrive with their own alcoholic drink will be turned away. Roger Sedgwick Rough has kindly agreed to make a field available for car parking, so please try to keep Jackson’s Lane clear on the day.

Ivan Locke has worked diligently to craft the life he has envisioned, dedicating himself to the job that he loves and the family he adores. On the eve of the biggest challenge of his career, Ivan receives a phone call that sets in motion a series of events that will unravel his family, job, and soul. All taking place over the course of one absolutely riveting car ride, An exploration of how one decision can lead to the complete collapse of a life. A thrillingly unique cinematic experience of a man fighting to salvage all that is important to him. Dr. Will Caster is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed-to be a participant in his own transcendence. A teenage boy raised by gorillas in Africa falls for a pretty conservationist following a chance meeting in the jungle, but finds their romance threatened by a menacing Silverback, and a scheming capitalist in search of a new energy source in this animated adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic tale CALVARY’s Father James is a good priest who is faced with sinister and troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish. Although he continues to comfort his own fragile daughter (Kelly Reilly) and reach out to help members of his church with their various scurrilous moral - and often comic - problems, he feels sinister and troubling forces closing in, and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.

RIDE A TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE ON A BORIS BIKE! Our KIDNEY CANCER BORIS BIKE CHALLENGE takes place on Sunday 29th of June, a week before Le Tour De France comes to Cambridge. We will have 15 Barclays Cycle Hire Bikes for our cyclists to ride from Cambridge to London following the 99mile route of third stage of Le Tour de France.
ENTRY Teams of four and/or individual cyclists can enter for the bike ride and will commit to raising a minimum of £1000 sponsorship for each bike. The money raised will help us provide continuous support for kidney cancer patients and their carers. The event is being lead by a cyclist who has many years experience in such events, having previously taken part in competitions both here in the UK and the rest of Europe. The bikes are quite heavy and therefore if you intend to cycle solo or take part as a team member, you should be a regular and experienced cyclist or regularly take part in other forms of physical exercise. If a Team or individual wishes to take part and ride a bike other than a "Boris Bike" then it would need to still offer something near the "Boris Bike" experience and be of a non-racing construction, with no drop handle bars, and have no more than a three speed rear wheel.
IF YOU OR YOUR TEAM WANT TO PARTICIPATE PLEASE CONTACT US office1@jameswhalefund.org 01223 870008 http://www.jameswhalefund.org/events-diary/event-information/kidney-cancer-borisbike-challenge/

REED FIRST SCHOOL CELEBRATE ITS CENTENARY!
On 28 June, Reed First School will be hosting a special garden party to mark its 100th birthday. This is to give people who have a past or present connection with the school or village the opportunity to come and celebrate with them from 12 noon until 4pm. Over the next few weeks, the children will be learning more about how the school has developed over time and helping to prepare for the party, which will include the opportunity to see photographs of the school over the last 100 years; maypole dancing and singing, as well as games for children and adults to enjoy and a raffle. Teas, coffees, squash and cakes will be offered for a donation but there will also be a barbecue and bar for those who want to pay for something more substantial. Reed School first opened its doors after the fields had been harvested and welcomed 37 pupils, aged up to 14, from the village and the surrounding area – many of them had previously had to walk across the fields to Barkway. There were originally two classrooms, divided by a partition, and these are still in use today as the school hall. The school currently has 48 children on roll and is still using the original admissions book, which has had 1,100 names added over the years. Mrs Jackie Harvey, Headteacher says; “It would be impossible to invite everybody individually without running the risk of causing offence by leaving someone out. Therefore, although some invitations will be sent out soon, I am relying on posters, group messages and word of mouth to let interested people know about it. I am keen to make the afternoon a celebration of Reed School with fun activities for all ages and maypole dancing and guided tours led by the children.” To ensure that the school caters adequately for everyone who comes, it is vital that staff have a clear idea of expected numbers. Everyone who has a past or present connection with the school or village is welcome to attend but please contact the school to let them know.
Please RSVP to the school by Saturday 14 June via telephone: 01763 848304, email: admin@reed.herts.sch.uk or by post: Reed First School, Jackson’s Lane, Reed, Royston SG8 8AB.

After many years working as a Beauty Therapy Lecturer at Cambridge Regional College it seemed natural to Lucy to open her own business when she was offered voluntary redundancy in 2013. The Beauty Barn is the result. After the years she spent teaching best practise techniques at the college and attending a number of courses, Lucy wanted her business to offer the highest standards in hygiene, customer service & personal care whilst being able to impart her knowledge, increase clients confidence and provide clients with a place where they can relax and have a little time for themselves.

BASSINGBOURN ‘BEASTLY’ MULTI- Community Rounders TERRAIN HALF MARATHON Tournament Are you a keen runner? Looking for a new challenge? Well look no further than the Bassingbourn Multi-terrain Half Marathon, which will be held for the first time on Sunday 6th July. Whilst the race starts and finishes in Bassingbourn, it also takes in some villages that will be familiar to you including Litlington, Abington Piggots, Guilden Morden and Steeple Morden. This is a relatively flat course so personal bests are possible and the course is suitable for those new to the half marathon distance. Not only is this a new exciting event and the first of FIT4THECHALLENGE but it is also, MOST IMPORTANTLY, raising money for Brainstrust, a brain cancer charity. Closing date for entry is 27th June and all information you need is at www.fit4thechallenge. co.uk Not a runner, but like to get involved in community events? Well, we want to hear from you! For any event the success is dependant on volunteers. We need volunteers to be marshals on the day, both around the course and at the race headquarters - if you have access to a mobile phone, have your own transport and are over 18 then get in touch - Contact: info@ fit4thechallenge.co.uk or call / text 07971507580.

Plotting a Vegetable Garden Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long. Producing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time. And salad leaves grown in ornamental pots can be as decorative as they are nutritious. Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible. As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost. Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost, but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growing-bag. I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but for the time you need it – and provided you keep it wellfertilised – it’ll be adequate. If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo, either a gorgeous
bright-green standard Lollo a burgundytinged Lollo Rosso or a mixture of both. Treat them as cut-andcome-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer. Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient, too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too. There are still plenty of tomato plants in the shops now, but hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. If you choose an outdoor variety it can be grown in a pot on its own, and if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container. If you’re after some fire in your cooking, a chilli pepper thrives in a pot in a warm and very sheltered spot as do sweet peppers. Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage, or even consider popping a few in with your main crops. Vegetables, like most
JUNE 14
plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun, so site your containers carefully. You want them to be easily accessible from the kitchen, but it’s more important to ensure they’re sheltered from the wind yet still get enough sun. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the tastebuds.

SKP
Beating the Competition As the football World Cup heralds the start of a summer of sport, many athletes minds will be focussed on beating the competition. And the same should be true for business owners and managers.
Copy the athletes
The athletes will have chosen their sport, studied the rules and techniques with their coaches and then trained as hard as they can to execute those techniques to the best of their ability. And we should do the same with our businesses; we should study our marketplace and our customers, listen to the advice of those who have relevant experience and then deliver our product as perfectly as we can. But there’s more to it than that, isn’t there? What about your competitors, how do you beat them?
Don’t get sidetracked
I remember a swimmer being interviewed at the London Olympics saying that it didn’t matter that the incredible Michael Phelps was in the lane next to him. To worry about
any other swimmer in the pool would just distract him from swimming as fast as he could. The same is true for business – worrying about the competition can be an unnecessary distraction! Just do your research on them and if they have strengths, try to copy them and if they have weaknesses, try to exploit them.
But what if your competitor is huge?
Whether your competitor is a local sole trader, or a massive organisation like Domino’s, Wetherspoon’s or Tesco Express, the ways to deal with them are the same. Don’t panic and don’t get upset – stay focussed on your customers and give them something that they cannot get anywhere else. If you provide them with a product, a service or an experience that they can’t get elsewhere, then they’ll keep coming back. It doesn’t need to be much, but it must be valuable to your customer, because “Every little helps!”

‘My Bike, My Bell...’ an audio installation by Rob Godman
Local composer Rob Godman has teamed up with the innovative Guilden Morden C of E Primary School, the University of Hertfordshire and other community groups to create a unique audio project coinciding with the Tour de France passing through Cambridgeshire. This July, the third stage of the Tour de France will start in Cambridge. Competitors will leave Parkers Piece to cycle through the City streets before travelling to London via the beautiful countryside of South Cambridgeshire. To be presented in St Mary’s Church, Guilden Morden ‘My Bike, My Bell...’ is a playful interactive experience, primarily, but not only, for the younger community members of Guilden Morden. For one weekend only (21/22 June 2014), the bells of Guilden Morden’s church will be replaced with the bells of children’s bicycles! The interactive installation will take place within the church combining ambient recordings of mechanical noises from the bicycle and the children’s own reflections on why cycling is important to them. The work will be about the children, largely created by them and the community. It will explore the very nature of environmental sound and address the function of bells as a communication device. Rob will begin working with the children in the school over the next few weeks.
