OUT & ABOUT

Exciting times at Royston Library

new and refurbished! Royston Library has a fresh new look with a new seating, shelving, carpet and enhanced facilities for local people. The ICT area has been upgraded and there is increased study and WIFi space. A new teenage area has been added to ensure that our children continue to enjoy books as they become young adults. The features that we all love about our local library remain. Membership is free, you can borrow up to 12 books on one library card (excellent if your children are avid readers but you dont want to buy every “Beast Quest” or “Rainbow Magic” book that has ever been written!) It is also possible to borrow Talking Books on CD, DVDs & music recordings - there is a small charge for this but it still represents great value. Internet access and WiFi are free in the library too and your membership also gives you access to Hertfordshire libraries online. This allows you to download ebooks and audio books online (for grown ups as well as for children), read online newspapers and magazines, browse the library catalogues and reserve and renew your loans amongst other services. The library is still the place to buy your Royston Picture Palace tickets but now you can also order and collect books from David’s Bookshop! The refurbishment has also created space for events and a very exciting one will take place on Saturday 3rd May at 11.30am! Olivier Award nominated Wizard Presents brings best-selling children’s author Michael Morpurgo’s enchanting tale “I Believe in Unicorns” to life, in an ‘utterly magical interactive show’ (The Stage), set in a library filled with books!

Directed by winner of two awards for innovation in children’s theatre, Dani Parr and

designed by Kate Bunce. Produced in association with Royal & Derngate Northampton and Watford Palace Theatre. Tickets are available in advance from the library - a £7 ticket admits 1 adult and 2 children! See you there? Melbourn Bowls Club

Melbourn bowls club will be holding an open day, to which present and prospective members are invited, on 4 May 2014 at their green on the moor, melbourn ( beyond the village college on the left hand side) from 2.00pm. They would particularly like to welcome prospective new members at this event, whether you are an experienced bowler or someone who has never played before. They enter teams in local leagues and play friendly matches on Sundays and also organise special events, such as the Open Triples at the end of August. Go along and enjoy some gentle exercise and good company, as well as tuition for those new to the sport, and the opportunity for some competitive games for more experienced players. There will be afternoon tea at the end of the activities giving an opportunity to get to know everybody in a relaxed atmosphere. Bowls is a game that can be enjoyed by all age groups, so please do not be put off by the false image that it is only for the elderly. For example, the Australian National Bowls squad has a lower average age than the Australian Test Cricket squad! You are never too young or too old to play the game, though the earlier you start playing the better the standard you are likely to achieve. There is a lively social life at the club, which has its own bar and organises coffee mornings every thursday during the summer season from 10.30 Until noon. If you would like further information contact Arthur Andrews on 01763 261990.

10 Ways To Save On Renovating Your Home Building work can be expensive, but if you’re canny you can keep costs down, says Katherine Sorrell 1. Use trade suppliers: they’re much cheaper

than their high-street equivalents. Open an account with your local builders merchant. Do your research beforehand, wear appropriate clothing and act confident. If you need to ask advice, though, do – these guys are the specialists and will probably be only too happy to help.

ask friends and family to help. You may be able to improve your DIY skills by studying a good manual, taking an evening class or even attending a specialist course. Only tackle jobs you can manage safely, however. Complex or tricky jobs should be left to the professionals, as should anything that involves electricity, gas or working at a height.

Instead of bespoke curtains, choose Roman or roller blinds, which use much less fabric and are correspondingly a great deal cheaper. Can’t afford to have the glass in an overlooked window beautifully etched? Then buy some stick-on window film, which is easy to use and inexpensive.

4. Try to design fitted furniture such as shelves

or cupboards with the dimensions of standard materials in mind. This will allow you to either buy off the shelf or will save on cutting-waste, and therefore cost you less.

10. Think laterally. You can completely transform a

Detroit Motor Show Stars Continuing from our April issue, James Baggott, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk, reports on the big new car debuts breaking cover in Motor City Porsche 911 Targa It’s a name synonymous with the 911 and has accounted for 13 per cent of all sales of the legendary model – and now it’s back. The looks won’t appeal to everyone, but the crazy roof mechanism on the 911 Targa will make grown

men weak at the knees. The rear glass dome hinges back for the roof panel to slot underneath in a beautiful fashion. We’re just not quite sure why you’d want one over a convertible.

VW Golf R If you thought the Golf GTI was good, wait until you see this! With a 296bhp turbo-charged engine, four-wheel drive and a 0-60mph time of less than five seconds it’s the fastest Golf on sale. Due in showrooms in the Spring it’s likely to cost a fraction under £30,000. Quad exhausts and new front and rear bumpers mark the R out. Audi Allroad Shooting Break Believe it or not, this is the strongest indication yet of what the next TT will look like. Don’t worry, it’s not going to be an estate (well, Spring Forward To Drive A series of Spring tips from driving school L2K. Suspension The thing that holds the car up! The Shooting Break concept is powered by the firm’s e-tron hybrid transmission that boasts 650Nm of torque and 400bhp – easily enough to see it hit 60mph in 4.6 seconds! Mini John Cooper Works Concept With more vents than an office airconditioning system and brushed aluminium bodywork, this Mini won’t be for everyone. It’s little more than a design study at present, with few details about powerplant or performance, but it does give Mini fans an idea what the next hot Mini will look like. Volvo XC Coupe The Swedish firm is on a bit of a roll with its concepts at the moment. This is the second of three design studies from the firm and, like the Concept Coupe we saw at Frankfurt last year, it’s an absolute stunner. The firm says it hints at the look of the much-anticipated replacement for the XC90 – and that the production car will retain its seven-seat versatility that isn’t present on this concept.

High Standards at the beauty barn

Welcome to Melbourn

After many years working as a Beauty Therapy Lecturer at Cambridge Regional College it was seemed natural to Lucy to open her own business when she was offered voluntary redundancy in 2013. The Beaty Barn is the result. After the years she spent teaching best practise techniques at the college and attending a number of courses, Lucy wanted her business to offer the highest standards in hygiene, customer service & personal care whilst being able to impart her knowledge, increase clients confidence and provide clients with a place where they can relax and have a little time for themselves. In order to meet those aims she has continued to study and works alongside Dermalogica who she says “use the best of science and the best of nature to produce amazing products which gain results in achieving skin health”. Lucy is trained in Dermologica’s ‘Face Mapping Skin Analysis’ to enable an individual prescriptive facial to be carried out. The business, based in Melbourn, offers make-up sessions, treatments for the face, eyes, body and nails along with hair removal, massage, electrolysis and advanced cosmetic procedures. All carried out to the very highest professional standard in a relaxing environment. For further information contact Lucy on 07769 584600 or email lucy@lucyusher.co.uk Oakley A6 BW wb_Layout 1 29/07/2013 11:39 Page 1
