WELCOME To the November issue of The Listing Community

Autumn may well be here but there is no reason to stay indoors... the Royston area certainly knows how to host events!

Expect to start the month with a whizz and a bang as Fireworks Nights take place in the area. Notably, Icknield Walk and Wimpole Hall host their events on Saturday 2nd November. The following weekend is Remembrance Day. The Royston Branch of the Royal British Legion host this excellent event, which is always well attended by townsfolk of all ages and a poignant reminder of all that those in the Services have done for us in the past and continue to do now. In-house, we are delighted to welcome Sharon Windebank to The Listing team. Sharon is well known in the town as she’s been a familiar face at Saffron Insurance on Kneesworth Street in Royston for the past 9 years. She joins Kate Berry, Cath Boughton and Lucy Boughton here in the office, and she’s already enjoying getting out and about and meeting so many businesses in the area! This is our 99th* issue and we’re delighted to be still going strong and working with so many of you in our local community. If we can help your business, organisation, group, club or you, then please do get in touch. We’ll be delighted to hear from you.

OUT & ABOUT The Royal British Legion

REMEMBRANCE DAY The Royal British Legion are in everybody’s minds at this time of year and the Poppy Appeal is in full swing but what else do they do for our community? I had the pleasure of chatting to Chris Murphy who is Branch Chairman of the Royal British Legion Royston Branch and he gave me a rundown of what the Legion means today for so many people. The Legion provides valuable support and resources to the serving and ex-Service community and their families. This is practical help to young and old with initiatives like the Battle Back Centres to support people who have returned from the most recent conflicts with disabilities. Chris emphasised that the wider community can play their part by ensuring that those in need of the valuable, practical and emotional support provided by the Royal British Legion are referred to the charity. Sometimes the camaraderie of being involved in the social side of the British Legion can be a tonic in itself. Chris said Remembrance Sunday, and Armistice Day

- the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - the day the guns fell silent to end the First World War) are of course major dates in the calendar. Villages, towns and cities across the country will come together to remember all those who have died in service to their country, from the First World War to the conflicts of the present day and all those in between, of which there are many. Chris also explained the three month process that he undertakes every year to organise the Remembrance Day Service and Parade which is held in Royston. This is part of the Legion’s role as “Custodians of Remembrance”. The process begins in August with the applications being made to the North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) for permission to close the roads and culminates on the day itself with Chris managing the proceedings and the 40-odd organisations that participate. It is vital we ensure the younger generations understand the life we enjoy and live today has come at great cost in human life. As the years and the

4

conflicts pass and become more distant in the memory it is especially important to remember those who gave their last full measure so we may live in peace and freedom. We must also remember those who are still with us, who through their Service may have suffered and will need help to deal with the issues they face. We remember the dead but we must not forget the living. So, this year, wear your poppy with pride but don’t forget the ongoing work of the Royal British Legion throughout the year as they stand “Shoulder to Shoulder” with all who serve. The Parade this year will set off from Queens Road, Royston at 10.25am on Sunday 10th November and arrive at the Melbourn Street Memorial at 10.40am. The main service will start at 10.45am. The Armistice Day Remembrance Service will take place on Monday 11th November at the War Memorial, Melbourn Street at 10.50am followed by a short service at the American memorial in the Priory Memorial Gardens. If people wish to join and support the Royal British Legion they do not have to have been in the Services, just have the desire to support the aims and objectives of the Legion. Please contact the Royston Branch of the Royal British Legion for more information on 01763 244560 or email rblroystonbranch@ yahoo.co.uk

AUTUMN ART EXHIBITION

Foxton’s exhibition team, led by Foxton School’s head Jenny Jones, are looking forward to welcoming all visitors and artists to the Autumn Art Exhibition’s 11th year at Foxton’s attractive and modern village hall. The exhibition had been held for many years as a very popular and highly regarded display in the old Foxton School building however, a move to a new site meant that the exhibition stopped for a few years. In 2003 it was enthusiastically resurrected and has since received praise from artists and visitors alike for the professional and tasteful presentation of work from local artists. Each year the exhibition has grown and since 2008 the works of art have been displayed in two large halls. In 2012 Karen Butler-Clark and her volunteers were delighted to receive the Art Exhibition award in the South Cambridgeshire District Council Arts Awards. Expect to see work by established and up and coming talented local artists. One regular and renowned supporter of the exhibition is Jane Hollidge, whose delicate ceramic work and stunning landscapes are very popular. Exhibiting artists for 2013 include Julie Baker, whose clever use of light and colour in her oil paintings creates beautiful evocative landscapes inspired by the Cambridgeshire Fens and Michael Papworth, a young artist, who, in 2012, won the visitor’s vote for the exhibition’s most popular exhibit with his image ‘Under the Moonlight’. Michael’s striking landscapes use texture, colour and the process of lithography to reveal the ever changing stories of nature All proceeds support the primary school in exciting ways including visual and performing arts. Exhibits are displayed in a variety of medias including ceramics, wood and textiles as well as oils, pastels, watercolour, ink and photography. Foxton Autumn Art Exhibition Fri 15th Preview evening. vember 16 No ROYSTON AND DISTRICT MODEL RAILWAY CLUB EXHIBITION 2013 th

The club was established following the tremendous response given by the public to an exhibition organised by the Royston Community Association early in 1987 using the community rooms at the rear of Royston Town Hall. Since then an annual exhibition has been set in the Royston Calendar to promote our hobby. In 2012 we moved to Bassingbourn Village College and held our biggest exhibition to date, arranging a free bus service from Royston to help ease car parking demands. All exhibitions have a good standard of scenic details to catch Model Railway Exhibition (Bassingbourn College) the eye and several layouts will have appeared in articles published e’ofBus ‘Heritag by the main model railway magazines. We also choose layouts that have trains running most Free the time! With many visitors spending more than 2 hours at the exhibition, we feelTo it is&important from to provide food and hot drinks (with seating) and make it available throughout the ston Bus Station Royday. At our exhibitions, we always try to provide a variety of layouts, from small table to n) some ay Statio Railwsize (Via top & 14.00, 15.00 hours 12 noonpossibly that require a large room. We also have a special ‘Thomas’ layout giving10.00 children , 11.00, (and adults) a chance to drive a train, many for the first time. All the proceeds from this go to the Children in Need charity as do monies raised from the face painting activity. Each year we have strived to increase the number of layouts of various scales selecting them from clubs and private individuals from all over East Anglia. This year we will display our club layout of ‘Appleton Dene’ which has been featured in the November 2013 edition of the Railway Modeller magazine. We will also have demonstrations such as models, scenery and miniature tree making. There are ‘trade stands’ offering new and second hand items from small tools to parts and complete kits from small businesses to the latest boxed railway set by the main UK model railway providers, such as Bachmann and Hornby. We see many visitors from the Royston and East Anglia area every year, others from further afield. Some see it as a fantastic opportunity to purchase some early Christmas presents! Whether you are an experienced modeller, just starting in the hobby, or returning to the hobby after a period of absence all are welcome. Come along and give us a look over. No obligation to join the club. This year’s exhibition is held at Bassingbourn Village College, South End, Bassingbourn, Nr Royston, SG8 5NJ, 16th November 2013 – opens at 10.30am A free ‘Heritage’ bus will be running to-and-from Royston Bus Station (Via Railway Station) throughout the day: 10.00, 11.00, 12 noon & 14.00, 15.00 hours Subject to weather conditions, the Royston Model Engineers will again be offering sit-on rides behind their lovely model railway steam engines in an outside area. Saturday 16th November 10:30 am - 5pm Accompanied children will be allowed in for free! LEARN TO PLAY BRIDGE

Royston Bridge Club are embarking on a new venture for anyone interested in playing the enthralling game of Contract Bridge, a card game based on whist, but with much more interest and challenges to it. As one attains better techniques and skill levels the game gets more exciting. Bridge is more than just a game, it is also a social event offering a widening circle of friendships. The game is a good way to keep your mind active and improve memory and analytical techniques. We are introducing Bridge courses for complete beginners and for those who can play but need refreshing into the modern techniques and conventions. The course objective is for trainees to reach a standard of play so they feel comfortable within a club environment. All ages are welcome. Tuesday evenings, 7.30 – 10pm on 22nd October 2013, in Litlington, Cambs, with a professional tutor. You will still be welcome, even if you have missed early lessons. #ROYSTONCONNECTS 2 : RE-CREATING COMMUNITY NETWORKS

Last month’s article in the Royston Connects series praised and blamed the revolution in digital communication for its impact on our lives, including the breakdown of communities. But it was also suggested that online WORKING TOGETHER initiatives can connect people around local concerns which may then lead ONLINE to face-to-face exchanges; three examples follow. For ten years, people have been trading their time through Royston Time Bank, earning and spending time credits – 1 credit for 1 hour’s help. In recent years, an online facility has put the matching process in the hands of time bank members themselves and extended coverage beyond Royston. You can sign up for free at www.mytimebank.org.uk. Streetlife is a national social network with a local focus. Nearly 450 people in and around Royston are discovering the delights of sharing local knowledge and personal opinions. When asked “what do you like about Streetlife?” responses ranged from access to North Herts District Council and recommendations for local service providers, to intelligence on town centre developments and events information. You can join the online conversations at www.streetlife. com and start your own. The newest addition to the list of online matching facilities is Herts Skills Share at www. volunteeringherts.org/skills-share.html. Launched in September, this facility helps charities find volunteers with the professional skills to develop time-limited projects. Royston Volunteer Centre (info@roystonvolunteer.org.uk) can help you make the most of Skills Share. Over to you - go to www.twitter.com/#RoystonConnects, find out more, and look out for next month’s Royston Connects article on saving the planet and making money.

When Keller Dover’s daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family? Based on Irvine Welsh’s novel, the brilliant James McAvoy is this lead as Bruce Robertson a bipolar, bigoted junkie cop who manipulates and hallucinates his way through the festive season in a bid to secure promotion and win back his wife and daughter. 7.30pm

Having done so well when shown in October, here’s another chance to see Bill Nighy in the brilliant About Time Starring Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland and Christopher Lee and re-released for its 40th Anniversary, The Wickerman is a classic. A police sergeant is sent to a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl whom the townsfolk claim never existed. LOCAL HISTORY PUBLICATION BLICATION AND CAN YOU HELP?

The Pilgrimage to Our Lady of White hill: Antiquaries, local historians and the formation of a historical tradition, by Jonathan Spain, September, 2013. Local residents may be interested in this recent publication which describes the evidence for a medieval pilgrimage site at Chapel Hill, near Haslingfield and the role played by local antiquaries and historians in preserving its memory and maintaining the tradition over three hundred years through to modern times. It’s about how local history is created and what motivates those who have written about it. Call for personal recollections: Jonathan Spain is a writer/researcher who lives in LOCAL WRITER Shepreth. This booklet is the first in a series of local studies. He is currently researching the history of fruit farming in South Cambs., and would be interested to hear from anyone JONATHAN SPAIN who worked in the orchards. To make contact with Jonathan or to order his publication, go to his blogsite: Jonathanspain. wordpress.com and leave a reply in the comment box, or email him at jrspain1@hotmail.com Jonathan’s telephone number is 01763 262007.

CHRISTMAS FAYRE

Royston Means Business is really excited to announce that an ice rink has been organised for its Christmas Fayre on the weekend of 7th/8th December. Details of how to book tickets will be publicised in the next few weeks. It is hoped that the ice rink will be a popular attraction in the town and grow from a single weekend this year to a whole week next year. On the 7th December the Christmas Fayre will bring the High Street alive with music, food and drink, gift stalls and our wonderful Santa’s grotto. At the end of the day the Christmas lights will be switched on by the Mayor. We would like to thank Royston First, Redrow Homes, Curwens and Linda Turner Interiors for their financial support of this event. If you are interested in sponsoring the event or booking a stall, there are still opportunities to do so. Please email: roystonmeansbusiness@gmail.com Mark the weekend in your diary – you really don’t want to miss this fantastic event.

New Business Launch

SIMPLY CHEESECAKE

24

One year ago this month, a new concept was launched in Royston. Simply Cheesecake strove to stand apart from the other cakey businesses out there, offering a unique service in dessert provision. Our concept? Bespoke, freshly handmade, hand delivered, high quality cheesecakes made with love, dedication and commitment to creating a dessert which appeals to all palettes. We pride ourselves on making any flavour or combination desired, hence a creation of a peanut butter, chocolate and banana cheesecake. Whilst this may not be to everyone’s taste (certainly not mine!) we like to think we have risen to every challenge thrown our way, most recently in the creation of a Black Forest Gateaux cheesecake and a Jamaican Ginger cheesecake. We offer cheesecakes in a range of sizes – our ‘standard’ range from 8 to 16 slice, our ‘function/wedding’ range which go from 24 to 32 deep slices, our bite-size tray bakes (as served in Glazed Creations) and our 3-portion ‘quarters’. Christmas is coming up and we have started taking orders for our seasonal Santa special – a white chocolate cheesecake with strawberry creamy Santas on top (pictured). Our most popular flavours are the Chocolate Orange, Strawberry and White Chocolate, Cookies and Cream and Tiramisu, but you are only limited by your imagination. We are also able to make some dietary specific alternative versions, such as lactose free.

Please check out our website www.simply-cheesecake.co.uk or facebook page facebook. com/cheesecakesim for further information.

In the garden... November

As autumn takes its shivery grip and we begin to head towards winter there are many beautiful plants in our gardens and countryside that are just beginning to show themselves. There are hips, hoares and flowers to feast the eyes on. There are so many to enjoy, here are just a few of the things to be looking out for. Our native hedgerows are full of rose hips from Rosa canina, Rosa eglanteria and hoares from Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) which are a welcome food source for birds. The native spindle is a very under rated plant, Euonymus europaeus ‘Red cascade’ has cracking rosy red fruits that catch the light on a sunny, frosty morning. Spindle was used in hedgerows years ago and is a good indicator of age. Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’ is a fantastic small specimen tree for the garden. It Viburnum x produces pretty pale pink flowers and is all the more spectacular for doing so before bodnantense ‘Dawn’ its leaves return in the spring. It thrives in most garden soils in a sunny position. Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ would be in my top ten of autumn specimens. It is an upright shrub that is grown for its lovely clusters of small, fragrant, white and pink flowers. Plant it in an open position where you can enjoy the scent, in well drained, fertile soil. It is a must for any winter garden. Elaeagnus x ebbingei is an under used, evergreen shrub that often appears in my garden designs. It has silvery backs to the leaves and at this time of year produces an abundance of tiny creamy flowers that fill the air with scent. Because the flowers are small it is often over looked but well worth considering for a mixed border or as screening. Heathers are making a comeback into our gardens and despite their reputation from the 80’s they can be used well in mixed borders. Many heathers need acidic conditions to grow, but two that are happy on our chalky soils are Erica carnea ‘Myretoon Ruby’ and Erica darleyensis ‘White Perfection’. They are good value because they flower for such a long period through the autumn and winter. Why not get out in the autumn and embrace the changing of the seasons?! The University Botanic Garden Cambridge and Anglesey Abbey both have good winter gardens and coffee shops to warm up in afterwards. So wrap up and get out into the garden!

CLIMBING PLANTS

by Pippa Greenwood

Ground cover plantings are a wonderful way to create gorgeous carpets of colour in your garden, whatever its size and wherever it’s located. But what’s so special about groundcover growing, when is it most useful and when should you start?

The initial few months will take some effort, but once growing well, most ground cover planting needs little if any maintenance except perhaps a very occasional trim, some food and water in drier weather. It has a superbly smothering effect on the weeds, killing weedlings and deterring further weeds from appearing. The denser the groundcover planting, the better the effect. Autumn is a great time for planting. Trees, shrubs, climbers and herbaceous plants that go in to the ground at this time of year often establish extremely well as they have the luxury of enjoying the relatively warm and yet moist soil, a perfect place for new roots to grow out and establish rapidly. Make sure you invest a bit of time and effort in to the preparation. Clear the area of weeds, digging out all tough weeds completely if you can. Fork the soil over, removing debris such as large stones or buried rubbish and then fork in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, and perhaps a little slow-release feed too. If you’re planting up a slope, it’s worth trying to secure the soil a little too, as all that preparation and weed clearing will have loosened the surface and made it prone to erosion. Once growing well the roots of the plants will help to secure the slope brilliantly, but in the meantime, use landscape fabric pinned down onto the surface of the slope. Don’t be tempted to cram the plants in too closely. Given time they will form the desired effect if planted at the correct spacing. But if you fall in to the trap of planting them elbow to elbow, then they are more likely to become stressed and miserable, more prone to disease and will need thinning out. Make sure the plants are kept just moist at the roots until they’re well established and feed occasionally. By choosing varieties of plants which are recommended for use as groundcover you’ll be unlikely to have to do much if any pruning. So what should you choose to grow? Foliage

that is attractive and interesting makes a wonderful groundcover planting and if you wish you can add a few more flamboyant flowering plants to the mixture too. By using plants with interestingly shaped leaves or variegated leaves your leafy planting will look even better.
