#RoystonConnects 1 : Local, social and online
Childhood obesity, community breakdown, and the demise of the high street have all been blamed on the revolution in digital communication. While it may be true that computer games discourage physical activity, that worldwide communication has done little for neighbourliness, and online shopping is taking trade from town centre stores, that’s only conversation piece one side of the story. Online communication can reduce isolation, particularly for people who are less mobile through age or disability, and in rural areas. Internet shopping has been a lifeline for sustaining postal services, and businesses such as the Hive Network have innovated to combine the convenience of online ordering with support for local bookshops. At the local level, perhaps in response to the facelessness of Facebook and the anonymity of Twitter, social media is increasingly being used to bring people together in person. Sites for carsharing, couch-surfing (free accommodation), and lending or giving tools and equipment are all part of a growing ‘sharing economy’ countering competition and consumerism, particularly in times of financial hardship and excessive waste. Cash mobs - the surprise group spending sprees in Royston reported in the August issue of The Listing - used social media to bring people together for community collaboration that supported local shops, created friendships and good feelings and, hopefully, inspired others to get active. Further articles in this ‘Royston Connects’ series of three will highlight other local initiatives – for mutual support, exchanges of products and skills, and community-building – that start online and end in face-to-face connections; showing how, in the words of Transition Movement founder Rob Hopkins, “local action can change the world”.

Harston Painters Harston Painters is a self-help group of local amateur artists and has around twenty members. It meets on Friday mornings from September to July in Harston Village Hall. The structure is very informal and there is no organising committee. No tuition is given but members help one painting at another, giving their opinions and advice in a friendly Saxtead Green postmill atmosphere. Some members attend the Group’s own annual Summer School, this year based on the Suffolk/ Norfolk border. The picture shows a couple of members in action at Saxtead Green postmill. Every two years the Group holds a public exhibition of members’ recent work and invites the local communities to “come and see what we do”. The standard of work on show is frequently highly commended by visitors. This year will be the seventh exhibition and will be open in Harston Village Hall from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, 19th and 20th October; admission is free.

OUT & ABOUT
The Rabbit Residence Rescue
based in great chishill The Rabbit Residence Rescue (registered charity number 1148016), based in Great Chishill near Royston, takes in, rehabilitates and rehomes neglected and unwanted rabbits. The Rabbit Residence Rescue is run by local resident, Caroline Collings, and a team of volunteers. The Rescue has been running for over 10 years. Caroline started the Rabbit Residence Rescue as a personal venture and is now employed by the charity as Rescue Manager. The Rabbit Residence plays a role in the community by attending local events to advise on rabbit welfare issues and by providing volunteering opportunities. Volunteering helps build confidence and develop useful skills of teamwork and communication, as well as allowing people to expand their understanding of how best to care for their pets. Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the UK, yet there are many misunderstandings about their needs. The traditional view of one rabbit living in a hutch still prevails amongst many in the UK. Yet this is in strong contrast with their actual needs when we consider how wild rabbits live. The latter live in social groups not alone, they cover a considerable area in a day, and their survival instincts strongly affect their behaviours and those of their domestic cousins. The problem of rabbits being abandoned or given up in the UK is massive and growing. A recent survey by the Rabbit Welfare Association found that around 67,000 rabbits entered rescues in 2010, about double the estimate previously quoted. And these are the lucky ones
that the rescues could accommodate. In some cases, rabbits arrive at rescue centres for unpreventable and unpredictable reasons, such as a change in the life circumstances of the owners, for example, a sudden illness or home eviction. However, misconceptions about rabbits are also to blame. Rabbits require more care and cost more than some people think, they are not ideal pets for young children (as they dislike being picked up) and they need more space than just a hutch. Many rabbits come through the doors of rescues, such as the Rabbit Residence Rescue, because owners were not aware of the commitment involved when they bought the rabbit from a pet shop or breeder, or because the rabbit is later perceived to be boring or aggressive. The latter can often be because the rabbit is bored due to insufficient space and lack of a rabbit companion or scared because the owners frequently pick the rabbit up. Kept in a small hutch with little space to move and no environmental enrichment a single rabbit may well appear inactive and uninteresting or feel threatened when human hands reach in to grab them.

Another common reason for rabbits coming into rescues is accidental litters. Some pet shops and breeders now make customers more aware that a rabbit needs company of their own kind, but sexing young rabbits can be difficult and errors result in accidental litters that the owners cannot accommodate. Rabbits can breed from four months old and a female can get pregnant again straight after giving birth. The Rabbit Residence Rescue is dedicated to providing the best possible care and to encouraging others with rabbits or wanting to adopt to do the same. The Rabbit Residence Rescue won Best Small Furry Rescue at the 2013 Wetnose Awards (www.wetnoseanimalaid. com/2013.html). We are always looking for new volunteers, both youngsters and adults to join our team. Both regular and occasional help is welcome. Duties include cleaning out enclosures, replenishing water bowls/bottles and those who can volunteer regularly would also be welcome to get involved in feeding and other duties requiring some training. We would also very much welcome volunteers with DIY skills who could help with repairs or building projects. We are open to visitors on Saturday afternoons by appointment. Please contact us if you would like to visit.
How you can help
• If you have a few hours to spare regularly or occasionally, you could make a real difference by volunteering your time to assist with animal care or DIY. Please email us to apply (rabbit_residence@hotmail.com). • If you are considering rabbits as pets, please do some research first. There is good information on the Rabbit Welfare Association’s website (www.rabbitwelfare. co.uk) or the Rabbit Residence Rescue’s website (www.rabbitresidence.org.uk). If you decide to go ahead, please contact us or another rescue. We have many wonderful rabbits, including youngsters, waiting for a second chance in life. • Join our ‘Sponsor-The-Bunnies’ scheme to help us look after the rabbits in our care. For details email SponsorRabbitResidence@ gmail.com or see www.rabbitresidence.org. uk/sponsor-the-bunnies.html

Royston Young Voices are back!
During the past 12 years singers actors, dancers, movers and players have been attending from workshops run by Linda Bance a local music teacher who specialises in working with very young children. She believes that through the Arts children develop great sense of pride and develop their confidence. Using the voice and moving with music helps children to express themselves and be imaginative and creative. At Royston Young Voices there is a great sense of friendship whilst the children work together. They all get to create their own pieces and give their ideas. At end of the 6 weeks there is a short performance for families and friends. This term we are pleased to say that we will be running a series of 6 workshops on Tuesday evenings at 4pm at Royston Methodist church hall Queen’s road Royston. These 45 minute workshops will begin on Tuesday 8th October. There will be no session 30th October. ( half term). Children from reception to 8 years of age are invited. There will be songs, dances, music making and acting and a focus on working with puppets.
Bookings for these sessions are being taken now. So if you are interested please call Linda Bance on 01763 246415 or visit the Play Music Play web site www.playmusicplay.co.uk Half page Villages ad:Layout 1

Glazed Creations
On Saturday 7th September Pip and Christina welcomed the first painters into the Glazed Creations paint-your-own pottery studio on Baldock Street in Royston. The first week was very exciting, welcoming painters as young as 8-week old Amelie who made a wonderful footprint plate with her Mummy and as old as 86 year old Nanny Edie who painted a mug for her GreatGrandson having received many from him in the past. Glazed Creations’ first ladies’ evening was a success, providing a friendly atmosphere throughout the studio for some ‘girl time’. Dads have been producing some fantastic art work for the tiled wall, and despite the need for a little coercion at first they have been the last to want to leave! Children have impressed with their concentration and toddlers have pottery painting entertained as they get stuck in and messy. at glazed creations Pip and Christina are keen to make the Glazed Creations studio a in royston real asset to the community of Royston and the surrounding villages. They look forward to hearing the outcome of the lots that they’ve donated to Foxton Preschool for their fund-raising auction and have had chats with the leader of a Rainbow’s group about the options for getting her group painting. If you feel that Glazed Creations can assist with your community group then please drop in and have a chat with the team about ways that they can provide activities or support with your fund-raising events. If you are in need of some time out to ‘paint your worries away’, a great gift idea, or a way to keep the children entertained give Glazed Creations a call and book a table.

inspiring young people to get fit - for life
“Teen Fit” is a brand new concept in Royston to empower teens with knowledge about exercise, a healthy lifestyle and nutrition, not for just today but for life. The youth-only fitness class is the inspiration of Royston U16 Rugby Coach David Ayliffe (or Aussie as he is known around the club), to encourage teens to be more active. Physical fitness has always been a big part of David’s life, particularly since joining the Australian Army as a teenager. Now, at 40, he still continues to enjoy it and also enjoys inspiring the next generation. Since moving here from Australia five years ago, David has coached the local rugby teams, and seen the same boys progress and achieve their goals both on and off the pitch, with fitness being one of them. His aim now is to allow all teens the opportunity to build up their fitness and experience for themselves the benefits that a healthy lifestyle can bring. He’s teamed up with the Government funded Change 4 Life programme, which encourages everyone to adopt a healthier lifestyle, to provide both fitness and nutritional advice to young people. David explains, “As a parent, we know that the habits formed in early life will have a direct impact on the choices our children will make as adults. The sessions are designed for the kids to have fun. Knowledge is very important; with it the kids can make better informed decisions for themselves on what they eat and when they should be exercising. The sessions will be demanding but plenty of fun!” Teen Fit is aimed at both boys and girls of all abilities, aged between 12-16 years old. Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday afternoons at the Heath Sports Club from 5-6pm. Booking is essential as numbers are limited. For further information on “Teen Fit” please contact Aussie on 01763 241 061 or 0777 550 7590 Chanel A6 BW_Layout 1 29/07/2013 11:34 Page 1

In the garden... October
Autumn has definitely arrived these past few weeks and the lovely long sunny summer days have begun to feel like a distant memory. But fear not the weeks ahead have some wonderful treasures to offer. Embrace the changing of the seasons and enjoy the display of colour in the trees and shrubs in our gardens and countryside. Autumnal There are so many to enjoy, here are just a few of the things to be looking out for. Liquidambar Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Lane Roberts’ is a fantastic specimen tree for the larger or Sweet Gum garden. The maple like leaves turn through the whole range of autumn colours from Leaves orange, red to deep purple before finally descending to the ground. It prefers a well-drained, fertile soil in an open position. Cercidiphyllum japonicum is in my top ten of great autumn specimens, not only does it have great colour the decaying leaves give off an aroma of burnt sugar, it is for this reason it affectionately known as the candy floss tree. It likes deep, fertile soil and makes a good tree for a sheltered garden. Amelanchier lamarckii is a winner for any garden when grown as a multi stemmed tree. It produces great spring colour as mention in previous garden features, but really hits the high notes in autumn when its rich red leaves catch your eye on the gloomiest of autumn days. Acer campestre is our native field maple and looks great in the hedgerows in the autumn. Its leaves turn yellow, red and golden brown. Being native it is tough and will tolerate virtually any soil type as well as drought. In the middle ages it was commonly used for making musical instruments. Viburnum opulus is another tough native to look out for in the hedgerows, its red berries provide good food for the birds and its red autumn tints look great too. Why not get out in the autumn and experience the changing of the seasons. Wandelbury near Cambridge is good, as is the Wimpole estate. Or for spectacular autumn colour take a trip to Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire to see its famous collection of Acers.

Climbing Plants
by Pippa Greenwood
Supporting Cast
A few climbers are self-clingers and don’t need a special support system when grown against a fence or wall; Virginia creeper and Hydrangea petiolaris for instance. But most need to have a proper support, and it pays to put this in place before you plant. For lighter weight climbers some trellis, perhaps prettily painted will do the trick, but for heavier climbers such as a vigorous clematis, or wisteria, you will need galvanised straining wires.
Easy Access
If you use trellis as a support on a wall, it can be attached to wooden battens which are fixed to the wall using rawl plugs. Use a series of hinges to attach one edge of the trellis to the batten, and a few hooks to allow you to raise or lower the trellis for when you need to maintain the wall.
Planting Distance
Climbers won’t thrive if they don’t receive enough water at the base. The ‘rain shadow’ created by the house roof and the drying effect of the wall’s foundations can make the soil close-by extremely dry so plant a minimum of 45cm (18in) away from the base of the wall and fork in plenty of well-rotted bulky organic matter before planting too.
Train it well
If the climber is quite small, it may need to be trained in the right direction. A short bamboo cane or several for a multi-stemmed plant, can be angled from the base of the plant to the vertical surface, allowing you to tie in the stems and edge them towards the support. Once the climber has reached the wall, the enlarging network of stems may become congested if left to its own devices, so actively train the stems to grow in the direction you need them to.
Extra Care
Climbers planted against a wall will need extra TLC if they’re to look their best. Make watering them top-priority, especially for the first 18 months whilst they’re becoming established. Apply a good, bulky organic mulch to a depth of about 8cm (3in) or so all around the rooting area, but take care to avoid the mulch coming in to direct contact with the stems.
October 13 • ISSUE 82
Arches, Arbours and Pergolas
Climbers don’t just look good on house, garden and garage walls and fences, they can also be used to great effect over arches and pergolas or to clothe an arbour. You may need to install some supporting wires here too, so go for galvanised wires and sturdy vine-eyes as fixings. Choosing a scented climber or two will add to the charm of a cosy arbour or archway.
Clever Combinations
If the surface that you want to plant up is big enough, try to use climbers that flower in different seasons as, chosen carefully, the plants you use will increase the period for which the arch, pergola, arbour, wall or fence, looks its best.
Bare Ankles
Many climbers do have a habit of becoming a bit bare at the base, especially after they’ve been in place for a few years. Try some seasonal bedding plants around the base, or plant a small and attractive shrub a little further away to hide the bare stems.

New home for barkway PreSchool
Barkway Preschool is happy to announce that it has now opened for the Autumn Term in it’s new home with it’s very own classroom and garden at Barkway VA First School. During the summer holidays Barkway Preschool moved from the Village Hall, where it had run successfully for a number of years, to be ready for the start of the new term in new surroundings. The move went extremely well and all resources are now freely accessible for the children to choose from. The children can choose to play indoors or out to make the most of their interests and add to their enjoyment. The same well qualified staff team are working with the children and having great fun exploring their new home together. The children are settling really well and enjoying their new surroundings with so many activities on offer. The preschool is now able to open every day during term time from 9am-12 or until 1pm to include lunch club and longer hours will soon follow. Children are welcome to bring their own packed lunch or for a small fee they are now able to enjoy a hot school lunch which many of the children have been keen to try. Barkway preschool welcome children from age 2, with a choice of days on offer and adhoc sessions available. It has lots of exciting activities planned for this term and the team look forward to sharing the fantastic opportunities in a very caring and safe environment with you and your children.
