No better way to end your summer day as to retreat to the solitude of your personal oasis and forget about the worries of your busy day. Under the same family ownership since 1968, Dunrite Pools is a family run business specializing in the construction of new inground, semi inground, spas and above ground vinyl lined swimming pools and back yard remodeling. ebirth, renew, recharge...all great words to describe that most welcoming of seasons, Spring. And oh how we are all eagerly anticipating its arrival this year! As Jack Frost stubbornly melts away and the first bit of greenery peaks through a gray ground, the Technicolor magic of Spring envelops us with an energized promise of opportunity and growth. Indeed, this sense of recharging, restoring and refocusing is one of the main themes woven throughout the pages that follow. Many of the stories featured herein were chosen to help our readers embrace the positivity of change and take advantage of all that Long Island has to offer to help you on your journey. The trick is to grasp the ever-changing world we live in and make it work for you, while at the same time caring for yourself and supporting those who make our communities wonderful places to live and play. At The List, we pride ourselves on being a trusted source for you, showcasing the businesses, services and professionals that we know will enhance your day-today life. This is the time of year when our To-Do lists get longer with projects and preparations, and our social calendars begin to fill up with celebrations of the season. Flip through this issue to find recommended venues for catered special occasions, or any number of experts, or gift boutiques, beauty services, restaurants and more. Just as we encourage our readers to embrace change, we have some new developments at the magazine, too. Be sure to read our new Wise Words by Real People column debuting in this issue. I always say you have to live life to learn, but it always helps to have the wisdom of others to help guide us along the way. We are really excited about this new feature and invite you to send in your Wise Words for us to consider and share. Another new section brings some adorable fun to our pages with Our Dog

Stars & Co. putting the spotlight on our canine and pet family members. Send us your favorite pet photos, too! And be sure to check out the story on the Doggie UK9 Academy – I know you and your dog will be happy to meet them! As “spring fever” inspires us to enjoy some time shopping, who among us doesn’t appreciate the chance to save some money? Check out our Deal Page or look for the ShowPhoneDeal icon appearing on some ads. Simply “click-n-save” the image to the camera roll on your smart phone and show it to the merchant to get the savings. It’s that easy! And be sure to visit our Facebook page – thelistmagazineli – for the latest weekend buzz and special deals. Yes, Spring is here! I love the sound of lawn mowers, motorboats on the bay, and birds settling into their summer homes. And as you and your families, friends and loved ones settle in to this glorious season, I wish you wonderful days of recharging and renewal. Happy Celebrations! Happy Mother’s Day! And most of all, Happy Spring!

Come Check Out What Everyone Is Talking About.

with Tricia Moore

What do you feel is important for people to know about your salon? Knowledge is key…. There are a lot of salons out there and even more distracting products. It is easy to get lost today in a cloud of mis-information. With all the different products out there, this one is “claiming” to be organic, or better than the rest… Without a true understanding of the chemicals that are in these products, stylists can do more harm than good. As an educator and a colorist for the last 18 years, having worked with many of the leading product companies in the market today, I pride myself on being not just a colorist, but a “chemicalist” as well. I believe it is our JOB as cosmetologists to have a full understanding of all the products out there, what’s in them, and how they work so that we can make better choices for the people who rely on that knowledge to keep them safe.. our clients. At Salon Astarte, we have our own in house education program to help instill those values in each of our team members, and this way ensure our environment will always be free of many chemicals used in other salons every day. What is your goal for the salon in 2014? I was born and raised in Bay Shore and I am proud to have a business here. No other community pulls together quite like ours. My goal is to see a prosperous, thriving, busy little town here and it starts with our clients. Many of them got hit hard after the Sandy Storm and through layoffs and budget cuts. So as a team, we wanted to help our guests save money through our clients rewards program, so they can get their finances in check and also have more money in their pockets to spend at many other fabulous businesses Bay Shore has to offer.

Giving Back A WHOLE NEW LEVEL OF COMMUNITY CARE We are human, small and precious, yet we struggle to live among huge institutions–banks, corporations, and schools, to name just a few. Yes, we have our trusted family members and friends, and possibly even coworkers, but sometimes even they aren’t enough. When illness strikes, it helps to know that you have more than you thought you did, that you’re part of a community surrounding you with a spectrum of healing resources. For two decades, Racine Salon & Spa has been a gathering place for Islip, New York, but it was twelve years ago when a unique use of their space began taking shape. The once-amonth Mondays at Racine (MAR) program started serving people undergoing cancer treatments, supporting an often difficult healing process by helping salvage their self-esteem and hope. Beauty treatments to undo the wear-and-tear of treatment were offered for free (and still are), except that now the salon offers this service–and sense of community–every Monday. But things have expanded even further. With the advent of their HBO Academy Award-nominated documentary last fall, the world is being compassionately reminded that, in an evermore complex and fast-moving culture, local community needs to surround its citizens in times of need, and stay with them. Why? Because it’s too easy to feel overwhelmed by all the choices, especially when you’re facing something scary. The Mondays at Racine first annual “Stand By Me” symposium will contribute to the ongoing discussion about available treatment options. In dealing with complex diseases, forward-thinking medical establishments are increasingly embracing a more comprehensive treatment model, combining multiple approaches, where each one compliments and strengthens the other. This is a specialized community taking care of the greater community, a force bringing forces together. The symposium builds on this by reflecting back to the community the brightest lights for illuminating the darkness that uninformed fears bring. How much does psychological empowerment count for when a person is devastated by fear and disillusioned by despair? Plenty. Because hope is, in itself, a complimentary therapy. The “war on cancer” is being fought in the trenches, on the community level, side-by-side, more than ever. But MAR isn’t just one more regiment added to the battle, it’s a whole new level of care that helps the “outside” radiate beauty to assist the “inside” as it transforms for the better. Working together, the Mondays at Racine Cancer Care Foundation strives to achieve the highest standard of excellence in service, in a safe haven and resource center our community can rely on. Their mission is to take the skills of the beauty industry and turn this potent tide into a national movement, providing services and programs alongside conventional medical protocols, helping millions of people heal more effectively. MAR knows that a mirror can be one of the most powerful tools to help the mind heal the body. This is a new way to navigate the journey of diagnosis and treatment. This is a net through which no one falls. This is the way it should be. And now, it is.

WISE WORDS BY REAL PEOPLE We often learn from life’s experiences…some good, some bad and sometimes if you are lucky enough you can learn from the wise words of another. We welcome you dear reader to send us your wise words to share with others. Email Joanne at joanne@thelistmagazine.com.

I AM.

WE

two of the most powerful “ I AM arewords in the universe. ”

Those two words have the creative power to manifest whatever follows them. Make sure whatever follows ‘I am’ is a positive intention. By Sadiqah Keys

all deal with challenges that cause us to feel overwhelmed…like we’re stuck and can’t get up. We have the power to overcome challenges by changing what we believe, think, and say. Many times we look at our situation and we THINK there are bumps and obstacles in our path.. What we believe becomes the thoughts churning in our minds causing fear, anguish, and anxiety, or peace, joy, and love. These thoughts are then given power to create by the words we speak. Words have the creative power to manifest whatever you believe, and we usually say what we believe, right? If you want to overcome challenges or change anything in your life... start with these two words...I AM. I AM are two of the most powerful words in the universe. Those two words have the creative power to manifest whatever follows them. I AM broke,

I AM lonely, I AM afraid...yes you are because you called the conditions into existence with your words. It’s time to observe yourself, pay attention to what you say. Make sure that whatever follows I AM is positive intention. I AM happy, I AM powerful, I AM prosperous…now you fill in the blanks. Start making this one change and the bumps and obstacles will begin to smooth out. You will begin to empower your faith and belief in yourself to handle anything that comes your. I AM sure of it! WISE WORDS BY REAL PEOPLE

Travel the path to wellness The morning of my 54th birthday I found a very inspirational message: “Don’t just count your year’s make your years count” - Emest Meyers It was just a simple wish for me to start living my life in a healthier, more charitable way. It’s not the diet. It’s not the extra ten pounds. It’s our everyday opportunities to change our lives and the lives of others. I invite you to embark on a refreshing way to love our lives, even in our toughest times. It’s a simple plan and it begins with simple changes. Feel good about your life. Find something positive and let it draw you in. Appreciate what you have – your home, food on your plate, family, friends. Treasure your partner and show it! Perseverance, op-

timism, and resilience, despite your circumstances, will keep you strong and let you move on. Wake up in the morning and begin with a few minutes of thought, instead of your emails! Through 26 years of practicing Obstetrics and now primarily Gynecology, many things have changed in the world of women’s health but the basics remain the same. A calorie is still a calorie. Early detection of cancer is still key. We still all need to eat our fruits and vegetables. Wine may be ok but in moderation. Cigarettes are still the enemy and a healthy, well balanced diet

remains essential on the path to wellness. In the midst of many new recommendations and scientific discoveries, it is essential that we understand our risks when it comes to health. We need to consider our family histories and take advantage of available genetic testing. This testing is not just for stars like Angelina Jolie; genetic counseling and testing is available and usually covered by insurance. An easily obtained sample of saliva or blood could be key to understanding your inherent risks. In some cases, with close monitoring and elective procedures, this knowledge can be the difference between life and death. Within a changing healthcare system, partnership with a physician is essential. See your

gynecologist yearly. Your visit is not just about a pap smear. Guided by new information regarding hormone safety, there are many innovative solutions to help make life during and after menopause happier and healthier. We have new, non-hormonal medications for hot flashes that actually help. We also now have a great new vaginal lubricant, Hylao-gyn that is not hormonal and aims to regenerate the vaginal mucosa. Many patients benefit from seeing a team of providers, if so I work with my patients to unify their healthcare by coordinating visits with skilled dermatologists, gastroenterologists and other necessary sub-specialist. The time is now to become a leader within your healthcare plan. Partner with a physician >>

BODY • MIND • SPIRIT

THIS SPRING Try These 9 Ways to Improve The Health of Your Body, Mind & Spirit Naturally and Quickly! Body

1

HONEY – best for your health in its raw form. Honey has been used as medicine for centuries. Considered by some to be nature’s antibiotic, perhaps the best thing about honey is that when you eat a teaspoonful from local beehives you add a built-in boost to your immune system and protect yourself against seasonal allergies. In the holistic community a spoonful of honey and a gargle of apple cider vinegar cure strep throat. Other benefits of honey are its anti-inflammatory properties, its ability to help combat alcoholism, and neutralize toxins in the body.

2

XYLITOL - Sweeten things up with the oft-unknown sibling to stevia. Xylitol has the consistency of sugar, yet fewer carbs and calories than sugar. It’s better in coffee, teas, and sprinkled over fruit than the colorful little packets of sugar substitutes that are known to be harmful. It is more like sugar than its powdery sister stevia. And it tastes better! It has been scientifically proven to help teeth and bones, and xylitol alkalizes the mouth. Chewing xylitol gum even helps to minimize ear infections in kids, and may make that next visit to the dentist milder. Even the American Dental Association encourages its use: “Xylitol is an effective preventive agent against dental cavities.” Best of all… xylitol is safe!

3

TURMERIC – has important healing properties and is a member of the ginger family. It is an Indian spice, and in the world of holistic healing and wellness it has gained a reputation as nothing short of a miracle drug. Numerous benefits include anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. It, improves digestion, can dissolve gallstones, and decongest the liver, and reduce menstrual pain. It has been attributed to lowering cholesterol. Patients with arthritis and back pain have experienced relief with turmeric.

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food - Hippocrates

14 | THE LIST MAGAZINE

917.559.7821

4

JUICING – the first cousin of smoothies – juicing is NOT the same as making smoothies. As you juice your vegetables, all of the fiber is removed, so it takes very little effort for your body to digest your juice. Juicing allows your body to absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables. Juicing has been compared to getting an IV, since the juice is absorbed immediately and at the cellular level. Juicing facilitates weight loss, improves energy levels, strengthens the immune system, builds stronger bones and will create a more glowing complexion. It may also reduce the chance of heart disease, cancer and strokes, three of the leading causes of death.

Mind

5

THINK FRESH THOUGHTS - Let spring melt away any negatives in your vocabulary. Replace your negative thoughts with positive, uplifting thoughts and affirmations of wellness and prosperity. New evidence by Dr. Mario Martinez describes our immune system as an observer rather than an enforcer. We have cells that eavesdrop on our thoughts. Instead of “I’m coming down with something” or “I don’t feel good,” replace it with: “I am so happy and grateful that my healthy immune system keeps all of my cells in balance so I can feel great,” or “I am dancing with the delight of spring fever.”

6

PLANT FIGURATIVE SEEDS - Set intentions and goals that won’t bore you or anyone else when read aloud. If it doesn’t scare you a little bit (in a good way) it probably isn’t a grand enough goal or intention. You want a goal or intention that allows you to become the person you were meant to be. Add the wow factor to your goals and intentions. The right intention or goal will require a shift in your Consciousness.

Spirit

7

EARTH. Right beneath your feet is perhaps the best medicine. The eye-opening book, Earthing by Clinton Ober, reveals scientific data about the benefits of going barefoot on concrete, grass, dirt, and sand. Chronic pain, inflammation, and even a depressed mood can fade away with as little as ten minutes of Earthing per day. Earthing introduces us to the benefits of our planet’s powerful, and underutilized natural healing energies.

8

PLANT some food and flower seeds. If you want to see an inspiring video on gardening check out the Ted Talk by Ron Finley - America’s Gangster Gardner - on Ted.com. Planting seeds is empowering and will beautify your environment. Planting and gardening are good for your soul and burn calories, plus you’ll get all the benefit of Earthing (see number 7 above) when you are getting your hands in the dirt.

9

MEDITATE - the most-often side effect associated with meditation is anti-aging for the muscles in the face and your cells in general. Want crows feet to fade? Meditate. Aside from this wonderful benefit, meditation is often attributed to gaining a new more positive and joyful perspective on life. To keep stress at bay, and to be more prone to think positive thoughts – which keep your body healthier, this new habit is likely to change your life. Meditators also feel that their meditation practice is integral in helping them reach their goals, or even in finding their purpose. This article is provided for information only and should not be construed as medical advice or instruction. “As you eat more raw foods and/or juice you will notice that as the physical residues are removed from your body, so will the residues within your mind, emotions and spirit be removed.” Romeo Brooks, PhD and author of the book Body Intelligence. Three tips for juicing: use organic vegetables, add ginger to your juice for a mild kick and a more focused brain. Finally, learn to love cleaning your juicer because of all the good juicing does for your body. Laura Mitchell Wilde is an author and general healthcare practitioner. Mitchell sees clients in Los Angeles, Manhattan, and on Long Island at the Racine Spa. Laura is trained in Consciousness-Based Medicine, BodyTalk, Energy Medicine, Chinese Medicine Theory and is the creator of the Bio-Spiritual Alignment System, a gentle healthcare modality that aligns body-mind-spirit for optimal wellness. WHAT A PERSON SHOULD EXPECT AT AN INITIAL DIVORCE CONSULTATION Top (Left to Right): Alita McKinnon, Joy Jankunas, Anthony Yovino, Elizabeth Diesa Bottom (Left to Right): Gary Tabat, Robert Cohen, Andrew Blum

Going through divorce or family law issues is difficult enough. You need and deserve attention, straight answers and a law firm with the experience and reputation to achieve the most positive outcome. At Tabat, Cohen, Blum & Yovino, LLP, the firm’s five partners and two associates have more than 150 years of combined experience practicing exclusively matrimonial and family law on Long Island, and the New York metropolitan area. With its focus on the needs of each individual client, the firm is capable of handling complex equitable distribution, support, and custody matters, as well as appeals and mediation cases. They understand that every divorce is different and your circumstances require legal counsel experienced in both negotiation and litigation. Many of the firm’s clients are from referrals made by other attorneys who know of the firm’s reputation for excellence, as well as from former clients who benefited from its powerful representation. Partners and the firm have consistently earned AV Preeminent® ratings from Martindale-Hubbell®; inclusion in Super Lawyers; and 10.0 “Superb” ratings from Avvo reflecting the continuing respect of fellow attorneys, the judiciary, and their clients. The size of the firm and depth of talent provides you with a team that works together to help achieve the best possible outcome. If you or someone you know needs a matrimonial and family law attorney, Tabat, Cohen, Blum & Yovino, LLP can help. With offices in Garden City and Hauppauge, they fight for your rights and the best interests of your children. Call to schedule your initial consultation and get the help you need and deserve.

The initial consultation is the first step towards attacking your marital problem and selecting the law firm trained to help you resolve it. You will not only become more educated about your own case, but it will also give you an opportunity to learn about the attorney, to judge his or her experience and knowledge, and to give the attorney a better understanding of your particular situation and goals. At your consultation, the attorney will discuss the legal effect of commencing a divorce action, what protection it affords you, as well as other options that may be available to you. The attorney should give you an overview of what to anticipate regarding the divorce process, including: (1) spousal support and maintenance ; (2) child custody and visitation; (3) child support, which will involve an explanation of the Child Support Standards Act; (4) Equitable Distribution or division of marital assets and liabilities, including an explanation of marital vs. separate property; and (5) Attorney’s Fees, Expert’s fees, and legal costs. You do not need to bring any documents to the initial consult, unless you have signed a pre-nuptial or separation agreement or any other agreement between you and your spouse regarding support, custody or division of property. However, if you wish to bring tax returns or a recent W-2, that may be helpful. The more complex your case is, the more time the consult will require; however, the more knowledge you have about your case, the less frightening it becomes and certainly, no one will expect you to put the legal pieces of the puzzle together. That is what the attorney is trained to do. Written by Gary Tabat

Cocktail of the Season BY MASTER MIXOLOGIST CHRIS CARDONE

Spring is here... Finally. After a very tough winter, New Yorkers are ready to enjoy what Mother Nature allows us to pick from the earth and use for our cocktails. Fresh herbs are in abundance and ready to be infused, muddled, macerated and steeped into cocktails. Thyme, rosemary, mint, tarragon, and lavender are just a few of the very popular choices for springtime libations. Spring cocktails offer us lighter, brighter and more refreshing options than our winter spirits/cocktails. Gin, vodka, light rum, and tequila find themselves as the more common base spirit as the weather gets warmer and our palates quench more acidity and less hearty meals. In the wine world, It’s almost rosé season as well (April) and lighter wines such as Sancerre (France) Pouilly Fume, (France) Albariño (Spain), Lambrusco (Italy) and Grachetto (Italy) start to dominate the wine world. So as the restaurants begin opening their patios, windows and doors and the “outside seating” becomes available, enjoy the best of what Mother Nature offers us and imbibe a cocktail made with fresh herbs or some great new 2014 vintage wines. Cheers!

Color Tips

for Beautiful Palettes Color is evocative. Color is powerful - bold or demure. Color can make you feel serene or energetic. Have you ever noticed the differences you feel around colors? Take a walk through your home - go from room to room and see how the hues affect you. If you have ever had difficulty putting together a concise and beautiful palette, here are some tips that can help answer your questions and inspire your choices.

Treme captures the soulful music and old world charm of New Orleans blended with Manhattan class. • • • • •

WHITE. Take a look at any paint fan deck at your local hardware store, and you’ll be amazed at how many “whites” you will find – hundreds! But can they all be classified as white?? The truth is, no. If you are looking to paint the trim in your home white, then there will probably be about a handful of whites you will be looking through to choose from. Some, like Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White, is a very pure white, that leans evenly to a cool or warm toned room, while some othesr are either cool or warm toned themselves. Now if you are looking to paint a room white, but want a little hint of color – this is where those multiple choices come in. But don’t get overwhelmed. Whites are grouped by their tones – whether its yellow, pink or blue, which will help steer you in the direction you want to be heading. BRIGHTS AND SATURATED TONES. Some people love to be in a room that has a deep dark color on the walls. It makes them feel enveloped in the space, and adds to the intimate feel. Others like to accent their space with a bright, bold colored wall, making it jump out and act like full sized art. Whichever you choose, my advise is to purchase multiple color samples for the color you are leaning towards, and put them on your wall. Seeing a little 2” swatch is one thing, and then seeing that bold color on a wall that’s 10’ high and 15’ wide is quite another. DARK COLORS. One of my design beliefs is that contrast is a major factor in creating a beautiful palette. Dark colors come in handy with this theory. Whether you are choosing to go very dark with your wood floor stain, or accent a family room with a painted grey fireplace mantle, dark colors add a touch of glamour and drama that is unmistakable. My tip – when choosing to go dark, really commit to it. If you are on the fence between two tones, go with the more saturated of the tones. You want contrast to look intentional, not like you got scared and went for a safer shade. Great style is timeless - it is a balance of beauty, function and passion. Combining decorating elements of classic proportions and modern details, Dawn Murnak House of Design Inc. creates interiors that are elegant, fresh & unique. This style philosophy is infused into residential, office and retail interiors throughout New York and Long Island. Contact Dawn by email at dawn@dmhouseofdesign.com

Four Legged Friends What is the attraction that makes people go crazy around puppies and dogs? I think it’s mainly because dogs are bred to like us so much. Its canine nature for dogs to read human body language and dogs will readily become part of our “pack”. It’s like having a sensitive friend who will give you unconditional affection, protect you, and never tell you you’re getting too fat.

• They don’t talk back. • They give you unconditional love. • They are not judgmental.

Did you know where the phrase Dog Days of Summer came from? The “dog days” of July and August, generally the hottest days of the year, coincide with the appearance of the constellation Sirius, the Dog Star, in the same part of the sky as the sun. The Romans believed Sirius added to the heat of the sun, causing the temperature extreme, and gave this part of the year its name--in Latin, of course. So when someone says, “dog days” they usually mean the hottest days of the year. Our ‘Dog Stars’ in the List magazine is a dedicated page to our reader’s dogs who are, well our stars!! …the company part is dedicated to the dog’s friends and family.

LongIsland’sLargestIndoorCanineTrainingFacility Eight years ago, Rolissa Nash and Ginny Anziani started out on their long time dream of having a regulation size place to educate and train the public about the needs of canine family members. Located in Bay Shore, their brain child Doggie U K9 Academy is 13,000 square feet and is the metropolitan’s largest state of the art, regulation ring size indoor training facility. The philosophy and teaching methodology at Doggie U is based upon the belief that the bond established through training one’s dog is one that lasts a lifetime. Words from Rolissa Nash, principle owner of Doggie U “As a young child teaching my dogs, I learned the importance of patience, communication skills, compassion and numerous benefits that have shaped my philosophy and teaching methodology. A well trained dog means a well mannered dog that makes a strong family member, obedient when out in the community, in our friends homes and more so in your own home. Ginny, my copartner, says “As a result of training and continuing to train, you and your family will be happier with your dog and he will be a pleasurable part of your family.” Our philosophy is based upon teaching owners how to communicate with their dog to help their dog understand and complete whatever task is asked of them. Our skilled and multi- accomplished Instructors have a wealth of experience that are available as alternative techniques enabling them to reach owners and their dogs to get the response that they are seeking. With Our combined training experience of over 50 years, these alternative techniques can be transferred to new and exciting sports that the student can enjoy as private rentals,

family time, community assistance or just keeping you and your dog in shape. To start your new puppy, adopted dog, mature dog, and YES, senior dog off on the right track take a look at our new starting classes. Doggie U offers programs for all levels of training for all ages, both dog and human. The old adage at Doggie U is that you can teach a new and an old dog a new trick. It is so important for children to learn how to handle and bond with their dogs early. This relationship can translate to skills they may use in every day experiences or future accomplishments in school. Our younger Doggie U Superstars are our biggest accomplishment. Seniors, also need help understanding their companion dogs. These dogs may be young or senior dogs with special needs. We have formed a new Senior Citizen Dog Training Program just for you. Come in or call us with all your questions. No matter what your focus is - dog showing training, dog manners, meet – ups and private rentals in a controlled environment or simply enjoying our weekend events. Our facility is always available for you and your dog. See you soon.

Lisa Marie Presley at the THE BOULTON CENTER Saturday, June 14

With all the hoopla that has surrounded her, it’s easy to forget that Lisa Marie Presley is at heart a simple Southern girl whose earliest musical memories are of obsessively listening to 45’s in her bedroom at Graceland and of her dad catching her singing into a hairbrush in front of a mirror at the age of three. The Memphis-born Presley reclaims those roots on her new album Storm and Grace — an Americana-inspired showcase for her songwriting talent and smoldering alto voice.
