Take advantage of your local library! Download e-books and audiobooks using your phone or tablet with their free hoopla app. And if you’re a lover of old-fashioned browsing, make a point to visit The Neverending Story, a literary oasis on Main Street in Babylon that opened earlier this year. They offer a great selection of books that cater to readers of all interests and ages.

Why not spend these hot and lazy days immersing yourself in a perfect summer read? There’s no better escape; these new fiction books will transport you with intriguing storylines and idyllic locales.

Long Island by Colm Tóibín

From the acclaimed author of Brooklyn, this novel continues the story of Ellis Lacey, an Irish immigrant now living in Lindenhurst. When she discovers her husband’s infidelity—that he has fathered a child with another woman—her world is upended. In response to this shocking revelation, she returns to her homeland, rekindling her connection to the life she left behind. A compelling tale of secrecy, misunderstanding, longing, and love, set against the nostalgic backdrop of 1970s Long Island.

The Sicilian Inheritance by Jo Piazza

Sara Marsala’s life is in turmoil: facing a divorce and grieving the loss of her Italian Great-Aunt Rosie, she travels to Sicily to claim a family inheritance and uncovers a dark family secret—her GreatGrandmother Serafina was murdered, not a victim of illness. Digging deeper into her family’s past, she must confront the very forces that threatened her ancestor. Alternating between the present day and Serafina’s life in the early 1900s, this riveting saga celebrates the resilience and heroism of everyday women. Filled with mystery, romance, and a rich cultural history.

Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez

Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it’s now all over the internet: every woman he dates finds her soul mate right after they break up. When Emma, with the same problem, reads this, she contacts him, and they devise a plan: date each other and break up to cancel out their curses. They rent a cottage on Lake Minnetonka for a summer fling, however, complications arise when Emma’s toxic mother shows up and Justin becomes the guardian of his three siblings, leading them to develop real feelings for each other. This witty, slow-burn rom-com is perfect for a summer read, combining humor with heartfelt moments.

This Summer Will Be Different by Carley Fortune.

Taking readers to the enchanting Prince Edward Island, this story follows Lucy, who vacations there annually to escape city life and spend time with her best friend, Bridget. Her summers become complicated by a secret romance with Felix, Bridget’s younger brother. Despite their mutual attraction, Lucy and Felix vow to keep their distance, as urged by Bridget. When Bridget leaves Toronto abruptly just before her wedding, Lucy rushes to PEI to support her. Grappling with her growing feelings for Felix, she questions whether their connection is more than just physical chemistry. With themes of friendship, love, and self-discovery, the story combines the allure of a summer romance with deeper questions of how one chooses to pursue one’s life. It’s a tale filled with charm, heart, and the bittersweet tension of missed opportunities and second chances.

Serendipity: The Beginnings of Hello Gorgeous

Hillary Bekelis and Amanda Mirchel’s professional paths crossed at Good Samaritan Hospital, where they quickly became good friends. Their shared interest in medical aesthetics led them to enroll in specialized classes in New York City. Realizing that their extensive medical backgrounds provided a significant advantage in understanding and applying aesthetic treatments, they decided to turn their vision into reality. Over the past two years, they meticulously planned and developed Hello Gorgeous, perfecting their services and mastering advanced equipment to achieve remarkable results.

Upon entering Hello Gorgeous, you will encounter a stunning, serene ambiance. The space, with its soft, calming colors and pristine cleanliness, is a true testament to the dedication and love of its founders. With safety and hygiene at the forefront, their medical backgrounds ensure that every detail contributes to a comfortable and thoroughly sanitary yet comforting environment. Hillary worked closely with her interior designer, Anne Marie Virgilio, to select elegant finishes and fixtures, ensuring that every element, from the lighting to the layout, elevates the experience, making it beautiful and calming.

State-of-the-Art

Technology & Treatments

When selecting the high-end equipment at Hello Gorgeous, research and safety were key. “My background as a nurse practitioner in neuro critical care makes me hypervigilant about safety,” says Hillary. She chose to partner with Bostonbased manufacturer Candela after extensive research, who provided extensive training and 24/7 support. Hillary and Amanda ensure they offer only the most reliable, effective, and safest treatments. “It’s important for clients to know that not all devices are equal, to ensure aestheticians are providing services that are safe and backed by research and clinical trials,” Hillary tells us.

Hello Gorgeous Where Medical Expertise Meets Skincare Passion

Recently opened on Main Street in Babylon, Hello Gorgeous is a new advanced medical spa where state-of-the-art technology and personalized care converge to create exceptional skincare experiences. The goal is to help clients of all ages learn to love and care for their skin. The spa works with each individual to create a custom skin plan to reach their desired goals. As medically trained aestheticians, the team at Hello Gorgeous uses evidence-based research to achieve exceptional results.

What began as a side interest has evolved into a passion project for longtime nurse practitioner Hillary Bekelis and Amanda Mirchel, a physician assistant in neurosurgery. Hello Gorgeous is the manifestation of their shared desire for a space to fulfill a wide array of skincare and aesthetic needs, driven by their endless fascination with the latest and safest technologies.

For microneedling, a process that stimulates collagen production by creating tiny channels in the skin, they offer several different approaches using the very latest technology. Hillary’s favorite machine is the Matrix, which she uses the most. It tightens and lifts the skin to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. Her most popular microneedling device is Exceed, a pen that uses a hyaluronic acid serum while making fine micropunctures in the skin. It’s ideal for treating acne scars or smoothing texture. They also offer microneedling using radio frequencies to go deeper or tighten the skin under the chin. Additional on-site machines include the Nordlys, which features multiple wavelengths of intense pulsed light to treat sun damage, acne scars, and rosacea, and the Fraxel 1550 for deep skin resurfacing.

But their most impressive machine is the GentleMax Pro—it’s the Mercedes-Benz of laser hair removal devices—and boasts an 80 percent reduction in hair growth after only six sessions. They encourage you to explore the various medical-grade approaches they have available and discuss

your own preferences and goals with them. The best way to do this, they recommend, is to book a consultation.

The Value of a Consultation Starting with a consultation is the best way to get the most out of the in-house expertise at Hello Gorgeous. “It allows us to make a plan with clients, including timeline, services, products, and budget,” remarks Hillary. “Most clients know they want to improve their skin but are unsure how to achieve their goals. That’s where a consultation comes in.” Hillary and Amanda take a thorough medical history of each client, noting all medications taken, ongoing health conditions, age, and lifestyle while also considering your personal preferences and aspirations. They offer honest evaluations and advice. They’ve tried many of the services they offer on themselves, so they can let you know firsthand what to expect, including recovery and downtime. Guided by the philosophy— “rejuvenate your natural beauty”— their personalized approach ensures that each client receives the best possible care tailored to their unique needs.

8 THE LI ST MAGAZINE 917.559.7821 MUST KNOW

Facials: The Gateway to Glowing Skin

Booking a facial is the best way to get acquainted with the services offered by Hello Gorgeous, and every facial is customized. “To me, everyone should be getting a facial every six weeks. Skin cells turn over every 28 days, and seasonally on Long Island, our skin changes in response to humidity, dryness, sun exposure, and hormonal shifts. Most people are aware these changes are happening but don’t know how to address them,” says Hillary. That’s why she recommends their signature facial, which is quite affordable, though more advanced options are available, such as the LED facial. “People just love sitting under the lights,” Hillary adds.

If you’re planning a milestone event where you want to look and feel your very best, such as a wedding, she recommends engaging with her early on. For smooth, pictureperfect skin, she suggests the DiamondGlow facial. “The machine is customized with five different serums and a diamond tip to physically exfoliate the skin, pumping in serum while pulling out impurities like a vacuum for a manual yet deep and natural exfoliation,” she explains. Hillary encourages her clients to think long-term and give their skin some loving attention yearround, not just for those once-ina-lifetime moments. “I find it so important that people feel good

about themselves,” she says. “My goal isn’t to change the way someone looks; it’s to enhance what they have.”

Botox and Injectables

Hello Gorgeous offers several injectables, including Botox, the biostimulant Sculptra for stimulating collagen production, and Kybella, the only FDA-approved injectable for a double chin.

IV Drips

Popular with both women and men, IV drips performed on-site are offered in three formulas: Hydration, for replenishing fluids and electrolytes; Recovery, to heal muscles and treat soreness; and Glow, to support healthy skin, hair, and nails. “Cleanliness is of utmost importance,” Hillary says, and insertion of the IV is performed by a specialized nurse. Many clients opt for an IV drip while they get a facial. It’s the perfect way to boost your physicality, whether for medical or health reasons or merely to feel your utmost.

Teen Skincare

Hillary’s passion for skincare began in her teenage years, and she now offers teen facials to help young clients develop good skin habits early on. She educates teens on proper skincare, countering misinformation from social media. Follow Hello Gorgeous on Instagram (@hellogorgeousli) and Facebook for updates on teen skincare classes and events.

Quality Products for Optimal Results

The spa places significant emphasis on the products they use in their treatments and offer for sale in their back bar. Carrying medical-grade, cruelty-free skincare lines Alastin Skincare, SkinMedica, and SkinCeuticals, Hello Gorgeous ensures that clients have access to the absolute best and most effective products for their skin. The spa also features a clean beauty makeup line, Jane Iredale, reinforcing the importance of quality and safety in every aspect of skincare. An at-home routine with high-quality products can significantly enhance the results of in-spa treatments, providing lasting benefits.

Meet the Team

The team at Hello Gorgeous is composed of highly qualified professionals who share a passion for skincare and client satisfaction: owner Hillary Bekelis, NP; Amanda Mirchel, PA; MacKenzie Tyler Skorupski and Brie Dillman, aestheticians; and Gabrielle Ward, front desk assistant and recent aesthetician graduate. Their combined expertise and dedication create a welcoming and courteous environment for clients. Hello Gorgeous is more than a spa; it’s a place where medical expertise meets a passion for skincare. Whether you’re seeking a personalized skincare regimen or advanced aesthetic treatments, Hello Gorgeous is the destination for enhancing your natural beauty. Visit them in Babylon to experience the perfect blend of medical precision and aesthetic excellence, and follow them on social media to see before-and-after photos and to hear about their monthly promotions.

Exploring Long Island’s Booming Golf Scene

The opening months of this Long Island golf season have been a bit of a throwback to the height of the early 2000s Tiger Woods era. Golf is booming, and for the first time since the days of scrolling Myspace and texting on flip phones, local players have an opportunity to swing their clubs on a brand-new local golf course.

Spy Ring Golf Club debuted in Setauket earlier this spring, and its long-awaited arrival at the site of the former Heatherwood Golf Course is the headline story of Long Island golf in 2024. It’s the first public course to launch here since Pine Ridge Golf Club opened in Coram in 2006 at the tail end of the turn-of-themillennium golf rush. Only a few weeks into its run, Spy Ring has already drawn praise from area players and golf-design enthusiasts.

While a shiny new course naturally attracts attention, the underlying theme across the Island continues to be the increased popularity of the sport. Golf is still riding high on a five-season-long wave that began during the pandemic and has only strengthened over time. New players who took up the sport as an outlet for outdoor activity are now experienced golfers navigating Long Island’s many municipal golf courses, its beginner-friendly par-3 layouts and challenging, nationally ranked golf destinations. Prime tee times have become prizes worth celebrating.

Even offseason golf, once the domain of only the most dedicated and cold-resistant golf fanatics, is now mainstream. No matter the time of year, when the sun is out, so are the golfers.

Add in the growing national trend toward modern, high-quality ninehole courses and it is the perfect climate for a new spot like Spy Ring

Where to Play Golf and Dine

Some rounds call for more than a hot dog at the turn. A handful of Long Island golf courses offer fullservice restaurants on site, but it’s hard to top JC’s Restaurant at Pine Hills Country Club in Manorville. JC’s features an extensive American menu with steaks, seafood, and a full bar. Outdoor dining on the terrace comes with full views of the golf course.

Where to Turn Golf into a Summer Excursion

to welcome golf fans. Up-and-coming course designer Tyler Rae built nine funforward holes featuring big, contoured greens and dramatic slopes that utilize the hilly nature of the property. Spy Ring is also unique for its sandy base, which sets up the type of firm-and-fast play that is rare on public courses.

Looking ahead to Long Island’s golf future, it’s not hard to see what the marquee attraction will be in 2025. The region will bask in the international spotlight next September when the Ryder Cup comes to Bethpage State Park, where the United States will take on Europe’s best at the vaunted Black Course. The crew at Bethpage already has seasons worth of tweaks and modifications completed in preparation for the Cup, and they continue today with bunker renovations and irrigation upgrades. Even more could be in the works later this year.

It’s an exciting time to be a golfer on Long Island. Just as long as you can find one of those precious tee times.

For most Long Islanders, Montauk is too far for a day trip. So why not fit a round at Montauk Downs State Park, one of New York State’s most celebrated public courses, into a weekend away with someone special? If your significant other doesn’t play golf, there’s plenty around town to keep them occupied while you’re battling Montauk’s wind-blown course— the surf, a spa, a bike ride to the lighthouse. The list is long. Meet up afterward on the beach or at any of Montauk’s incredible restaurants.

Where to Play Beginner-Friendly Golf

One of Long Island’s best entry-level golf courses is right here in Babylon at Sumpwams Creek Par-3 (also called the E. Donald Conroy Golf Course). Whether you are just starting out or have years of golf under your belt, everyone is welcome on a pleasant course made up of short and medium par-3s. You can also head west and check out the pitch-and-putt course at Nickerson Dunes in Lido Beach. It’s a family-friendly spot with turf tees, wavy greens, and occasional views of the Atlantic from atop the sand dunes.

Where to Admire Scenic Golf Views

Long Island is blessed with a variety of municipal golf courses that play right up against the scenic bays and inlets. None are more picturesque, however, than Timber Point Golf Course in Great River, home of the famed “Gibraltar” par-3 (hole #5 on the Blue Course). Timber Point is a product of the Roaring Twenties—back then it was an exclusive private club; today it’s a modified Suffolk County muni. But the Gibraltar hole has stood the test of time, and nearly a century after it was built, it stands tall above the Connetquot River and Great South Bay. It’s a grueling 200-yard climb, but the panoramic bay view is just as sweet whether you birdie or bogey.

Where to Find the Toughest Golf Test

Everyone knows about Bethpage State Park’s Black Course— the golf course with a “warning” sign hanging over the first tee. Throw in the exhausting walks (no carts allowed) and the history of major championships, and the Black can be a very intimidating place to play. But most golfers at some point want to test their skills against one of the nation’s best. If not, or if they simply want to have the option to ride, Bethpage’s Red Course is nearly as stiff a challenge. It features long par-4s, several dogleg holes, and stretches nearly 7,100 yards from the back tees.

Nature’s Insecticides

Meet your Guardians for an Organic Garden

During the hot months of summer, our gardens are finally established and thriving. The flowers are blooming and vegetables are almost ready to be harvested. As our gardens reach maturity, pests like aphids and scale insects usually flourish too. And unfortunately, they love to prey on our growing gardens, sucking the life out of your greens; they guzzle the sap out of stems and leaves, which leads to discoloration, yellowing, and stunted growth. Make sure to check your garden for any signs of these nasty pests, because if you see any, then you’re going to want to read on!

So, what can you use in your garden to solve this potentially damaging problem without using any harmful pesticides? There is a very simple answer to this question: ladybugs and praying mantises! These carnivorous creatures act as natural insecticides in your garden. Despite often being spotted on flowers, these insects aren’t there to eat the blooms. Instead, they’re cunningly waiting to catch pesky intruders like aphids and caterpillars. As these pests stunt your garden’s growth, ladybugs and praying mantises will save the day! You will be able to watch these natural protectors in

action as they get rid of your insect problem the natural way. You can easily find these helpful bugs for sale at local garden centers like Stables Gardens, Bayport Flower House, and Father Nature’s Garden Center. Now that you know there is an all-organic way to keep your garden safe from pests, you may be asking, what exactly do I do with these carnivorous insects? Well, let me tell you!

Ladybugs

There are a few simple rules you should follow when introducing ladybugs as a natural insecticide to ensure they stay in your garden. First, when purchasing these lucky bugs, they need to be stored in a refrigerator until you are ready to release them. Storing them in a cool environment will make the ladybugs go dormant; in other words, they will go into a deep sleep. This prevents them from becoming stressed out while they are stored in containers. When you are finally ready to release them, make sure to do it at dusk and be sure to spray the area where you

are planning to release them with water, because when they wake up, they are going to be very thirsty! Most importantly, ladybugs will only stay in your garden if there are pests to eat; if there is no more food for them in your garden, they will move on.

26 THE LI ST MAGAZINE 917.559.7821 57 GARFIELD AVENUE | EAST ISLIP NY 11730 | 631-226-7556 | WWW.ZIMMERMANSHOME.COM OPEN: Monday-Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm CLOSED: Sundays *Evenings By Appointment Only* MUST KNOW NATURAL INSECTICIDE

Praying Mantis

Unlike ladybugs, praying mantises are sold as eggs at local garden centers. Up to 500 baby praying mantises will hatch from just one egg! Although you can put the eggs directly in your garden and wait for them to hatch, the only downside is that you will be putting them at risk of being eaten. But don’t worry, there is a better place to store the eggs while waiting for them to hatch that the kids will love! A tiny aquarium tank will do the trick! Just put some leaves and sticks at the base and then add

the eggs. Cover the top with a lid that has tiny holes so oxygen can reach the eggs. Then place the tank by a window, so the eggs can feel the warmth of the sun. Make sure to check the tank every day, because you want to release the baby praying mantises into your garden as soon as they hatch. Keeping them in the aquarium tank for too long can lead to them eating each other, since there is no other food source available. Once released, you will have hundreds of babies roaming around in your garden, catching those invasive insects.

So, let these natural protectors join your garden, ensuring it blooms beautifully with nature’s own guardians. Rest assured, they won't become pests themselves but will keep your garden in perfect balance

Did You Know?

It is a common misconception that praying mantises are on the endangered species list. In fact, there has never been an official law stating that if you killed one you would be fined, though you should never kill one anyway! This myth circulated to discourage people from harming the praying mantis, because they are so beneficial to a garden’s ecosystem.

This recipe elevates the classic Caprese salad with the creamy richness of burrata cheese instead of mozzarella. When gardenfresh or in-season local tomatoes and basil are at their peak, this dish becomes truly special, making it a perfect appetizer or light meal for the summer.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 large heirloom tomatoes, sliced

• 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved

• 8 oz burrata cheese, drained & patted dry

• ¼ cup fresh basil leaves

• Extra-virgin olive oil

• Balsamic glaze

• Kosher salt & ground pepper, to season

• Rustic bread for serving

INSTRUCTIONS

Prep Tomatoes: Arrange the slices of heirloom tomatoes on a serving platter. For roasting the cherry tomatoes, toss the halved cherries on a sheet pan with a bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Roast at 400°F for 10 minutes. Let cool to room temperature before adding to the platter.

Burrata: Allow the burrata to reach room temperature. Tear into pieces and place atop the tomatoes or place it in the center whole and slice it open to reveal the creamy core.

Basil: Scatter finely chopped fresh basil leaves over the salad.

Garnish: Drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze.

Season: Add salt and pepper to taste.

Finish: Serve with a loaf of rustic bread.
