Welcome to our spring issue—the first of four we’ll bring you this year. It’s always a favorite, filled with the fresh energy and promise that only spring can bring. There’s something about spring. The light shifts, the breeze warms, and suddenly everything feels a little more possible—with longer days and the quiet return of color all around. It’s a season that nudges us forward, inviting growth in ways both seen and unseen.

Sometimes growth is big and bold, like leaves sprouting from a dormant tree overnight. Other times, it’s subtle—a shift you hardly notice until something feels different. Whether it’s personal, professional, or environmental, growth comes in all forms...and it’s a miraculous part of living.

Our Here We Grow Again issue is a celebration of just that–of making small changes that can create a big impact. From simple ways to support the environment to meaningful shifts in your health or home, this issue is rooted in inspiration.

As you flip through the pages, you’ll meet local businesses that are growing and here to help you grow, too. You’ll find ideas to spark joy in your garden, tune into your wellness, and reconnect with the beauty of this season.

Our cover feature, Nicky’s on the Bay is a taste of what’s to come this spring and summer. They’ve got some extra-special happenings lined up, and we can’t wait for you to see what they’re cooking up.

So here’s to this new season. To new energy. And to the magic that comes with a little sunshine and a lot of heart. Spring is a time of plans and possibilities—a season full of milestones, celebrations, and reasons to gather.

And as we look ahead to Mother’s Day, I’m honoring my own mom and celebrating the nurturing spirit of all women— moms, mother figures, and all those who show up with love, strength, and care in countless ways.

Why You Need Both Perennials and Annuals (and Maybe a Tomato, Too)

If you want a garden that looks beautiful and feels alive from spring through late summer, it’s all about the mix. With just a little planning, you can have something new blooming every few weeks—each flower taking its turn, then making way for the next.

A truly beautiful garden has both perennials that return year after year, and annuals that bring vibrant color all season long. It all starts with daffodils and tulips—the first pops of color after winter. Then come the irises, standing tall, followed by the purple spheres of alliums. In mid-spring, peonies make their entrance—lush, fragrant, and impossible not to love. From there, the summer rhythm begins. Catmint softens the edges, salvia adds vertical texture, and bold coneflowers and black-eyed Susans bring heat-loving color and height. Later, garden phlox and bee balm round things out. And just when you think the show is over, Japanese anemones and sedum keep things going a little longer.

That’s the beauty of perennials: they come back each year, and if you stagger their timing, something is always happening.

Annuals, on the other hand, are the summer-long stars. They bloom early and don’t stop. Petunias spill over window boxes, impatiens glow in the shade, marigolds brighten up borders, and zinnias keep going strong. They fill the spaces between perennials and keep your garden colorful, even when other things take a break.

Looking to elevate your garden even more? Think fragrance and texture—two details that bring depth and delight. Lavender, dianthus, and catmint offer beautiful scent and attract pollinators. For foliage contrast, try lamb’s ear, ornamental grasses, or ferns—each adds shape, softness, or movement.

To add visual interest and variety, mix in annuals like snapdragons for height and classic charm, or dusty miller for its silvery softness that pairs beautifully with just about everything. Coleus is another favorite, with rich, painterly foliage that brings instant personality to beds and containers. Combining perennials and annuals with varying heights, bloom times, and textures keeps your garden dynamic—and creates a space that surprises and welcomes you all season long.

Grow Something You Can Eat

These bite-sized beauties are the first to ripen in summer gardens and often the last to stop producing. They come in all kinds—classic red, sunny yellow, even mahogany-striped—and you can grow them in the ground, in a big pot, or even in a hanging basket.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

Start small, grow big. That little plant from the garden center? It can grow up to six feet tall and wide in just two months. Give it space and a strong cage or trellis to support it.

Short on space? Go with compact varieties like Tiny Tim or Tumbler—perfect for containers.

Keep it consistent. Tomatoes need about an inch of water a week, and steady moisture helps prevent the fruit from cracking.

Harvest often. Once they ripen, you’ll be picking every few days. And yes—they taste even better when they come from your own backyard.

Local garden centers are a great go-to source for advice— whether you’re planting flowers, herbs, or your first tomato. The people who work there genuinely enjoy helping others grow. For any questions, just stop in and ask. That’s the beauty of shopping local.

Growing Wisdom from Friends of The List

Spring doesn’t just flip a switch—growth happens in the in-between. Before the big bloom, roots stretch, buds form, and nature quietly does its thing. And just like nature, we’re always growing, even when we don’t see it. Some growth is slow and steady, unfolding over time with care and patience. Other times, it happens through an intentional shift—something we choose and lean into. And then there’s the kind that seems to happen overnight—just ask anyone with grandkids. One moment, they’re tiny, and before you know it, they’ve grown into full-fledged little people, changing by the day. Growth comes in all forms, at all speeds. If we nourish it, tend to it, and give it space, it will happen—sometimes gradually, sometimes in the blink of an eye, but always in motion.

For our spring issue, Here We Grow Again, we asked some Friends of The List to share what personal growth means to them. Here’s what they had to say:

Growth as a Grandparent

“For me, becoming a grandparent is a profound kind of growth—it expands the heart, reshapes priorities, and offers a second chance to experience childhood from an older, more patient perspective. It’s a shift from raising to guiding, from responsibility to pure connection. Grandchildren offer the chance to slow down and savor what may have been missed in the busyness of parenting. They are an extension of our children and a reminder of how love multiplies with each generation. With them, we get to relive childhood’s magic, create new memories, and embrace a love that only continues to grow.”

– Jackie Doyle

Embracing Change: The Quiet Work of Growth

“Springtime always brings a special appreciation for new growth as we see and feel the world around us waking up. Living in the Northeast, we can’t ignore the dramatic changes unfolding around us—long, bare branches suddenly bursting into bloom, the days stretching longer, the air shifting. But growth isn’t just what we see outside; it’s something we experience within ourselves.

The Buddhist concept of impermanence reminds us that change is constant and inevitable, and by clinging too tightly to what was, we create suffering. We see this in our own lives— new jobs, growing children, aging bodies. Change is relentless, sometimes merciless. But one thing we know for sure: change is the necessary condition for growth. And while change is inevitable, growth is a choice.

True, intentional growth happens when we show up for ourselves—even when it’s hard. It comes in the quiet moments, the small choices, the willingness to step beyond what is comfortable. Mindful practices like yoga, meditation, or simply sitting still teach us how to navigate life’s shifts with grace.

We can ask ourselves: Are we open to letting old parts of ourselves fall away, or are we clinging to them for dear life? Do we have the courage to embrace new versions of ourselves?

Growth doesn’t demand grand gestures. Small, consistent steps lead to transformation over time. Take that class. Read that book that’s been waiting on the shelf. Pack a picnic and embrace our beautiful island. Be present with friends and loved ones. Always fill your own cup first.

Life will keep moving, no matter what. The question is: Will you move with it, grow from it, and become more of who you’re meant to be?”

– Samantha and Toni, The Welcome Mat

Growing Without Perfect Conditions

“We often hold off on taking action, waiting for the perfect moment—the ideal conditions, the flawless plan, the feeling of absolute readiness. But here’s the truth: if we wait for perfection, we might never begin. Growth doesn’t happen because everything is just right. It happens when we decide to start anyway.

Think about it—how many workouts get skipped because there’s no full hour to spare, when 15 minutes would still count? How many ideas never take shape because the plan isn’t flawless? Sometimes, good enough is all you need to get started. Progress isn’t about having the perfect setup. It’s about moving forward, step by step.

Nature doesn’t wait for perfect conditions to bloom, and neither should we. Good enough isn’t settling—it’s what gets you growing.”

The Power of Acupuncture:

20 Years of Healing at Healthcare Wellness Center with Anthony Cerabino

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Anthony Cerabino, B.M., LMT, M.S., L.Ac.—licensed acupuncturist, licensed massage therapist, NAET practitioner, and founder of Healthcare Wellness Center—to reflect on two decades of holistic healing, the impact of acupuncture, and what’s ahead for his practice.

LIST: You’re celebrating 20 years of Healthcare Wellness Center—what does this milestone mean to you?

ANTHONY: Dreams, affirmations, and visions do come true. This means that we are a fully established “Complimentary Medical Healthcare Facility” and will be around for many years to come long after I have retired. We are a community-based yet globally conscious medical center that looks for many integrative approaches to work alongside your standardized medical care.

LIST: What first inspired you to pursue acupuncture and holistic healing?

ANTHONY: While I was in Massage Therapy School in 1993 there was an acupuncture program at the college. I took a Traditional Medicine class on acupuncture theory and fell in love with the holistic medical approach to healing the mind, body, and spirit. I was amazed how acupuncture could heal people without medication.

LIST: Many people do not fully understand acupuncture—how would you explain its benefits to a first-time patient?

ANTHONY: Most patients know that acupuncture relieves pain, especially neck, back, and sciatic pain in the tendon-muscular system. There are also a multitude of healing responses that can happen in many systems of the body including the respiratory system, the nervous system, the emotional system, the digestive system, and the skin system.

LIST: You work with a wide range of conditions. What’s one of the most memorable transformations you’ve helped a patient achieve?

ANTHONY: Every day I experience many healing experiences, especially when it comes to people who are at a transition in their life and they want to make some changes in their lifestyle. I enjoy watching people learn to take responsibility for their health and do not run to a doctor to be fixed by a pill. Awareness is the key to transforming your life into a healthy-balanced life.

LIST: You take an integrative approach, blending acupuncture, massage, breathwork, herbal medicine, and nutrition. How do these modalities work together?

ANTHONY: Acupuncture treats the body from the outside in. Herbal medicine and foods treat the body from the inside out. Acupuncture is bodywork just like chiropractic, massage therapy, physical therapy, and osteopathic medicine but also incorporates working with your electromagnetic energy of the body called qi (pronounced ‘chee’). All these healing modalities help to get a free flow of energy in the body. If something is stuck, then there will be pain in the body and mind. The bodymind.

LIST: Your patients often say you have a very intuitive approach— how do you personalize care for each individual?

ANTHONY: Every person has a different set of mind, body, and spiritual associations and traits that must be addressed individually. Every day I practice intuition awareness which must be nurtured daily, mostly in the form of meditation, which can be still or movement forms such as yoga, Tai Qi and Qigong. Sometimes I combine them. Meditation can be in the form of a creative project of music, dance, art, and/or riding a bike. There are many possibilities. The practitioner has to be as sensitive and receptive as possible to the patient's needs which are cultivated through these forms of mental relaxation or stillness efforts. Again, whatever gets me to relax.

LIST: We know music is a passion of yours. Do you see a connection between music and healing?

ANTHONY: I will always be a musician in life whether I am performing or appreciating a great performer or a great musical theater production. Music is a form of relaxation. Music is a form of social interaction with fellow performers. Music is a sacred spiritual gathering just as I am working with a patient oneon-one or with a young child-parent combination. Music is a creative art form. Any form of science is also a creative art form.

LIST: What’s one piece of advice you wish more people knew about maintaining long-term wellness?

ANTHONY: There are many ways to remain and attain wellness in your life. The basic pillars of long-term health are eating right, thinking right, sleeping right, and healthy relationships with yourself and other people. “A balanced lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle.”

LIST: In a fast-paced world, stress and burnout are common— what simple techniques do you recommend for daily balance?

ANTHONY: Please set aside some time for fun and relaxation. We simply just push ourselves too much and become addicted to too many behavioral patterns for instant gratification. Disengage from all electronics including your TV to take a break from external-excessive stimulation.

LIST: What’s next for you and Healthcare Wellness Center? Any new treatments or approaches you’re excited about?

ANTHONY: We will be one of the first acupuncture clinics to use ultrasound-guided needling when needed for super precise needling points. We will keep hiring the best doctors of acupuncture to uphold the true value of what acupuncture can heal. We will be incorporating more Neurofunctional Acupuncture in the near future to help relieve symptoms of neurological diseases such as Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and seizure disorders.

LIST: As a lifestyle magazine, it’s our pleasure to celebrate Health Care Wellness and its impact on the community. With 20 years behind you and exciting advancements ahead, your services remain a valued resource for our community.

Everyday Biohacks for Optimal Health

CONTRIBUTED BY THE ROOT CAUSE SOLUTION

“Biohacking” is a word we’re hearing more and more these days—but what does it really mean? At its core, it’s about making small, science-backed lifestyle tweaks to boost your physical and mental well-being. The best part? You don’t need expensive gadgets or extreme measures to see results. Below are several simple shifts you can start incorporating this spring.

Morning Sunlight Exposure

Start your day by stepping outside for at least 10 minutes of natural sunlight. This helps regulate your circadian rhythm, supporting better sleep, boosting energy levels, and improving mood. Natural light in the morning also sets the tone for balanced hormones and a steady energy flow throughout the day.

Dry Brushing Before Showers

It sounds simple—and it is. Using a naturalbristle brush on dry skin before your shower helps stimulate the lymphatic system, supporting natural detoxification and boosting circulation. Just a few minutes a day can wake up your body, smooth your skin, and leave you feeling refreshed and glowing. It’s one of those small habits that quietly works magic over time.

Sauna Sessions for Detox & Relaxation

Whether it’s an infrared or traditional sauna, heat therapy helps flush toxins, improve circulation and support muscle recovery. A few sessions per week can aid detoxification, enhance skin health, and promote deep relaxation.

Red Light Therapy for Cellular Health

Red and near-infrared light therapy have been shown to reduce inflammation, support collagen production, and boost energy at a cellular level. You can find red light therapy at medical spas, gyms, or even through at-home devices.

Wearing a Weighted Vest

Incorporating a weighted vest into your daily activities, like walking or doing household tasks, adds resistance that strengthens muscles, supports bone density, and improves posture without requiring extra time in the gym. It’s an effortless way to build strength and resilience while going about your normal routine.

Green Juice for Nutrient Support

A morning green juice made with cucumber, ginger, lemon, parsley, cilantro, and dandelion greens is a simple, refreshing way to hydrate, support digestion, and flood your body with essential vitamins and minerals—especially if you’re not getting enough greens in your day.

Cryotherapy for Recovery & Metabolism

At The List, contributed articles are intended to inform and inspire, but wellness is personal. We encourage readers to speak with a healthcare provider to determine what’s right for their individual needs.

Brief exposure to cold—whether through ice baths, cold showers, or cryotherapy chambers—can reduce inflammation, support recovery, and even boost metabolism. Athletes swear by it, but it’s also great for everyday muscle recovery. Just 1–2 minutes under cold water at the end of your shower can boost circulation, build stress resilience, and leave you feeling energized.

Gratitude & Mindset Shifts for Mental Resilience

How we think directly impacts our well-being. Simple mindset biohacks like journaling three things you’re grateful for daily, starting your morning with positive affirmations, or taking a gratitude walk can rewire your brain for a more optimistic outlook. Studies show that practicing gratitude can improve sleep, lower stress, and enhance overall happiness.

SKIN & HAIR CARE PICKS THAT DELIVER

The List’s Tried & True: Two Beauty Boosts to Try

There are always new products and services popping up in skin and hair care—and we take pride in discovering what’s available from local professionals we feel confident recommending.

This spring, we tried two standout treatments that delivered real results.

Dermaplaning

at Hello Gorgeous, Babylon

What piqued our interest: it’s non-invasive, has no downtime, and leaves your skin smooth, bright, and glowing. But what really stood out—especially now, as so many of us are investing in quality skincare products—is that it helps those products absorb better.

“By removing the top layer of dead skin cells and peach fuzz, your products can penetrate more effectively,” says Mackenzie Tyler Skorupski, medical esthetician at Hello Gorgeous. It also creates a flawless base for makeup—or gives you that fresh-faced glow without it.

“It’s safe, painless, and a great option for most skin types,” Mackenzie adds.

Smooth skin, better absorption, and more out of what you’re already using? We’re in.

K18 Hair Treatment

at Village Salon & Spa, West Islip

You may have heard of it—or maybe not—but K18 is a game changer, and a great way to refresh your hair for spring and summer. If your hair has been through it—color, bleach, heat styling, life—this might be just what it needs to bounce back.

I had mine done at Village Salon & Spa, where they offer the professional-strength version (this isn’t your typical deep conditioner). What makes it different is that it works on a deeper level—repairing damage from the inside out. No masking, no coating—just real repair.

The treatment only takes about 20 minutes, and the results can last up to 20 shampoos, especially when paired with the Damage Shield shampoo at home.

And the results? Instant. My hair felt stronger, smoother, softer...like it had memory. The shine was back. The bounce was back. It just looked full of life.

When to do it? It can be done after a color or bleach service to help repair damage right away—or just on its own when your hair needs a little love.

Watch These Styles Grow THE LOOKS WE'RE LOVING THIS SEASON

PASTELS

Pale pinks, buttery yellows, and sky blues are everywhere— from your entire outfit to the smallest accessories. Add a pop with a bag or blazer, or go headto-toe in one shade for a clean, calming look.

BUCKLE UP

Belts are bigger and bolder— layered over blazers, cinched at the waist of dresses, or worn low and wide. It’s less about function, more about impact.

WIDE-LEG TROUSERS

Wide-leg flowy pants are a relaxing and stylish reprieve from skinny jeans. Pair them with a tucked-in tee or a cropped jacket to balance the shape.

OVERSIZED BLAZERS

Strong shoulders (yes, even a bit of padding), roomy fits, and longer lines. Throw one on over jeans, belt it over a dress, or keep it open over a tank and trousers.

THE SUMMER DRESS

Think light fabrics, stripes, or fringe. These are the dresses that go from farmers’ market to cocktails—no effort required.

BOHO BLOUSES

Billowy sleeves and soft fabrics give these tops a romantic feel. Pair with denim, shorts, or layered under a jacket.

CHECKS & GINGHAM

Plaid’s getting playful again! Think soft colors, mixed patterns, or unexpected pairings. Yes, you can mix checks with florals.

SUEDE STYLES

Suede’s sticking around, especially in chocolate brown. Jackets, skirts, and even accessories are great for adding a little structure to spring’s softer tones.

FRINGE, CROCHET, & TEXTURE

Simple pieces with hand-crafted details—like a tank with fringe or a skirt with a raw edge–are an easy way to add interest to your outfit.

COASTAL STRIPES

Sailor stripes and beachy details bring a laid-back, summer-at-the-shore vibe. Hoodies, dresses, and soft knits are all in.

RETRO PRINTS

Bold florals, paisley, and vintage-inspired graphics are back—and meant to be mixed. Not everything needs to match, and that’s the fun of it.

SHEER FABRICS

Tops, skirts, or sleeves with see-through details. Layer over basics or let a little skin show through— either way, it’s fresh and floaty.

SKIRTS, SHORT TO LONG

From bouncy minis to sweeping maxis, skirts are having a moment at every length. Go flirty with pleats and volume, or keep it grounded with a long, lean silhouette in denim or sheer layers. Feeling bold? Try an asymmetrical hem to shake things up.

WESTERN BOOTS

Wear them with a floral dress, denim skirt, or even shorts. It’s western with a soft side— perfect for spring.

Style Tip:

You don’t have to wear everything on the list—just the pieces that feel like you. Local stylists are here to help you pull it off with ease, offering real style without the stress.

Shop our local fashion boutiques for these looks—and support the style makers right in our own backyard.

Two Local Favorites, One New Home

Gemelli's Italian Market & Coyle's Homemade Ice Cream Come Together in Lindenhurst's Newest Food Destination.

What happens when an old-school Italian market and a beloved vintage ice cream parlor join forces?

You get one seriously exciting food destination! Two South Shore favorites, Gemelli’s Gourmet Italian Market and Coyle’s Homemade Ice Cream, are bringing their signature flavors under one roof in Lindenhurst—offering the best of both worlds in a single stop.

This partnership came naturally when the next generation of Gemelli’s and Coyle’s owners saw an opportunity to blend their passion for high-quality ingredients and time-honored traditions. And Lindenhurst, with its small-town charm and growing buzz, was the perfect place to make it happen.

Step inside and experience a trip back in time—with checkered flooring, vintage red barstools, and just the right touch of modern flair. The 2,000-square-foot space features an open floor plan, where customers can watch both operations in action. Coyle’s takes the front, scooping up their delicious ice cream, while Gemelli’s fills the back, serving up gourmet sandwiches, fresh salads, and grab-and-go specialties. And with shared booths and countertop seating, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a sandwich and a scoop in one sitting.

For Gemelli’s, this new location is all about embracing its roots while introducing a fresh grab-and-go concept centered around delicious

artisanal sandwiches and a chopped salad bar with over 40 ingredients. With a culinary chef's background, they’ve created a menu with a mix of flavors that will leave customers coming back for more. The deli department will have over 30 deli salads to choose from, including favorites like a healthy Tuscan Kale Salad and signature Nonna Gemelli's Eggplant Caponata.

Meanwhile, Coyle’s is keeping things classic, serving up the same fanfavorite flavors that have made them a staple for nearly 40 years, plus a new “Flavor of the Month” sure to excite all ice cream lovers.

South Shore, get ready—your new favorite food stop has arrived!

In-Season Asparagus, Simply Delicious

In spring, asparagus is at its best—tender, and full of fresh flavor. It doesn’t need much. A drizzle of good olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt is often all it takes. Roasting or grilling brings out its natural flavor and subtle, nutty richness in a way boiling never can. Here are a few fabulous ways to enjoy it—from simple sides to brunch-worthy bites.

Roasted Parmesan Asparagus

(SERVES 4-6)

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 large bundle asparagus

• Extra-virgin olive oil

• ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

• Freshly ground black pepper

PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Rinse and trim asparagus, then arrange on a foil- or parchment-lined tray. Drizzle with olive oil, roll to coat, and sprinkle with Parmesan and black pepper. Cover loosely with foil and roast for about 20 minutes, until tender and melty.

MORE WAYS TO ENJOY ROASTED ASPARAGUS

Toss it in Pasta

Chop the spears and toss them with hot pasta, a swirl of high-quality olive oil, fresh lemon zest, and a generous handful of grated Parmesan. It’s light, flavor-packed, and tastes like spring in a bowl. The asparagus adds freshness and a tender bite that complements the lemon and cheese beautifully.

Try it in a Frittata

Roasted asparagus is perfect in a quick, no-fuss frittata. Whisk together 6 eggs, ¼ cup milk (or cream for a richer texture), ¹⁄3 cup grated Parmesan, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Pour the mixture over the asparagus in an oven-safe skillet, then bake at 375°F until just set, about 15–20 minutes. For extra flavor, toss in a handful of halved cherry tomatoes or some crumbled cooked bacon. Delicious warm or cold— with a side salad and a slice of crusty bread, it makes a perfect brunch or light lunch.

Cucumber Mint Mocktail

(SERVES 2)

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 large English cucumbers (skinned and sliced)

• 1 cup lime juice (about 2.5 limes)

• 4 Tbsp agave (sub maple syrup or honey)

• 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves (about 10-12 leaves)

• 2 small pieces fresh ginger (about 2 inches)

• 4 cups filtered water (or coconut water)

• Club soda (to top off each mocktail )

PREPARATION:

COCKTAIL OPTION

Reduce water to 1.5–2 cups and add 2–3 ounces of vodka (or blanco tequila for a margaritastyle twist). Optional: add a splash of elderflower liqueur or extra ginger for more zing. Top with club soda.

In a high-speed blender add in cucumber, mint, ginger, agave, and water. Blend until smooth and creamy. Pour the mixture into a strainer to remove the pulp. Set aside. Fill a glass with ice and add in thinly sliced cucumbers. Pour the green juice over the ice, leaving about 1 inch of space. Top it off with club soda and garnish with mint. Enjoy!

Store the juice in an airtight container, separate from the club soda, and enjoy within 3-4 days.

GROW YOUR OWN GOODNESS

Consider adding these two standouts to your garden this season. Spring is the perfect time to plant what you love. Asparagus takes a little patience—it can take a couple of years to establish—but once it does, it comes back every spring for decades.

Cucumbers, by contrast, are quick to grow. Plant them now, and by mid-summer, you’ll be slicing your own into salads, snacks, or refreshing drinks. They thrive in raised beds or containers and love to climb, making them as fun to grow as they are to enjoy.

Prosciutto-Wrapped Asparagus Bundles

For an elevated presentation, wrap 3–4 spears of raw, trimmed asparagus in a thin slice of prosciutto. Place the bundles on a parchment-lined baking sheet, drizzle lightly with olive oil, and roast at 400°F for 12–15 minutes, until the prosciutto is crisp and the asparagus tender. Just before serving, finish with a drizzle of balsamic glaze. A standout side or an elegant spring appetizer.

LIVING DECOR:

How to Style Your Space with Houseplants That Thrive

A home can have all the right touches—cozy throws, standout pieces, beautiful rugs—but nothing brings a space to life like plants. Greenery adds texture, color, and a natural sense of calm. They’re more than decor—they grow with you, adding presence and personality.

To create a home that looks as good as a design magazine—and keeps your plants thriving—you need the right match between plant and place. And it all starts with light.

Knowing which direction your windows face is key to placing the right plants in the right spots.

Not sure where to begin? You’re not alone. That’s where local plant experts come in. Kandice, owner of GrowinShade Plant Shop in Islip tells us,

“The first thing I ask every customer is what kind of lighting is in the space they’re looking to add plants. I feel this is the most important part—without the correct lighting, the joy of having plants can be overshadowed with the stress of keeping them healthy. Once you understand your light, all you need are proper care instructions—and your plant journey can be one filled with accomplishment and pride.”

HERE’S HER QUICK GUIDE TO GET YOU GOING:

South-Facing Windows (Bright, Direct Sunlight)

These windows get the most sunlight throughout the day, making them perfect for sun-loving plants.

• Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata) A statement plant that loves very bright light and some direct light. As long as it gets the light it needs, this is a lovely easy-care plant.

• Succulents and Cacti Aloe Vera, echeveria, jade, and other sun-loving varieties thrive in the light of southfacing windows.

• Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) Loves lots of sun and produces dramatic, tropical leaves. If you have high ceilings this plant will fill the space effortlessly.

• Areca Palm Adds lush, breezy texture and thrives in bright spaces.

West-Facing Windows (Strong Afternoon Light)

These spots get intense late-day light, which can be too much for some plants but perfect for others.

• Monstera Deliciosa Prefers bright, indirect light but can handle some afternoon sun.

• Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) A low-maintenance succulent that appreciates afternoon sun

• Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica) Adapts well and can handle filtered indirect light.

• Dracaena A diverse plant that loves bright, filtered light but will also adapt to most moderate lighting conditions.

East-Facing Windows (Soft Morning Light)

Morning light is gentle, making these spots ideal for plants that enjoy moderate sun.

• Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) Low-maintenance and expressive; wilts when thirsty.

• Calathea ( Prayer Plant) Enjoys humidity and indirect morning light.

• Boston Fern Great in hanging baskets; loves soft light and moisture.

• Philodendron Easy-care plant that thrives in moderate light.

North-Facing Windows (Low Light)

These areas get the least sun and are best suited for shadetolerant plants.

• Snake Plant (Sansevieria) Hardy, stylish, and perfect for beginners.

• ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) Thrives on neglect and low light.

• (Epipremnum aureum) Easy to grow and great for trailing.

• Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior) A true survivor that thrives in shade.

KANDICE’S QUICK TIPS FOR HAPPY HOUSEPLANTS

If you’re new to plants, start with easy-care varieties like snake plants or ZZ plants. They help you ease into a routine and build confidence.

Sometimes less is more—especially when it comes to watering. Don’t follow a strict schedule. Every plant and space is different, so let the environment guide you.

Dust off your plant leaves regularly. Clean leaves absorb more light and are less prone to pests.

And when it comes to potting, Kandice recommends using plastic nursery pots. They make it easier to monitor root health and re-pot when needed. Just drop them into any decorative container you like for a finished look.
