Look Back: Interior Designer Susan Tamberino of Samhal Living on Nostalgia, the Renaissance, and Enhancing Bay Shore’s Main Street
When Susan Tamberino, founder of Samhal Interiors, reflects on Bay Shore’s Main Street, she feels both echoes of the past and the pulse of the present. A longtime resident of Bay Shore, Susan raised her family here. And just as downtown was beginning its revitalization in 2000, she opened her own retail space, Samhal Interiors. While many shops were still shuttered, Susan was ahead of her time, setting up a large furniture showroom, home décor store, and design studio in a town she loved. Her shop thrived for a decade, after which she closed the store to focus solely on interior design projects expanding primarily on the North Shore, including opening a design studio and the original Living boutique in Cold Spring Harbor. Yet her heart and roots have always been in Bay Shore and the South Shore community.
“I had been called into a job by a local friend opening his new restaurant, The Chop House,” Susan recalls. “After I completed the project, I realized that
this is where I wanted to be.” Inspired by this renewed connection to the area, Susan returned to Main Street in the fall of 2022, opening a location for her design studio, Samhal Design Group. The following year, she introduced Living, a boutique offering clothing, accessories, and home decor, situated in the busiest part of town just west of her studio, further showcasing her commitment to the community she loves.
Back in the early 2000s, Milk and Sugar, Aji 53, Verde, Tula Kitchen, and Tullulah’s stood as some of the first pioneer restaurants, breathing life into Main Street and inspiring others to follow. Restaurants, some now over two decades old, have kept the area buzzing, drawing both new visitors and old friends. Today, Susan is among those called to refresh and reimagine these local fixtures, keeping them vibrant and aligned with Bay Shore’s evolving tastes. Her recent projects include The Chop House, Primi Italian, and presently Tullulah’s, each reflecting both
the nostalgia and the necessity of reinvention. Tullulah’s, a beloved spot originally located on 4th Avenue, started in a tiny space 20 years ago, expanded next door, and has now found its new, larger home on Main Street, where Susan is leading its redesign. Reflecting on the project, she recalls how many of these pioneers, who transformed vacant storefronts into bustling gathering spots, now look to update and refresh, keeping pace with the community they helped build.
In her work, Susan blends the past and the present, honoring the legacy of Bay Shore’s Main Street while crafting spaces that speak to today’s needs. Her story and design philosophy mirror the resilience of this cherished neighborhood—a place where old favorites are reimagined, and Main Street continues to thrive.
With Tullulah’s set to open the doors of its new home on Main Street in 2025, anticipate something truly special.
Susan Tamberino

Give the Gift of Cultural Exchange: Host an International Student in the Great South Bay Area
During the holiday season, we often think about the meaningful gifts we can share with others that go beyond material things. In that spirit, this year, why not consider offering one of the most valuable gifts of all—the gift of a life-changing experience? Our vibrant Great South Bay community is the perfect place to welcome international students attending St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School, thanks to its proximity to the school and the strong sense of togetherness that defines our area. By opening your home, you’re not just offering a place to stay—you’re offering a sense of belonging, friendship, and the gift of cultural exchange.
Currently, around 40 exchange students from countries such as Vietnam, China, Korea, Russia, Brazil, and Germany are calling Long Island home, and we expect 15 more to arrive in January. These students are eager to immerse themselves in our culture, while
also sharing a bit of their own. Hosting an international student is a gift that extends beyond the holiday season, offering lifelong connections and enriching experiences for both the student and the host family. This season, consider the fulfilling opportunity to share your home, your traditions, and your warmth with a student eager to learn, grow, and experience life in a new country. The gift you give will undoubtedly be returned many times over through the bonds created and the experiences shared.
To explore more about hosting an international student and offering the gift of cultural exchange, scan the QR code on this page and submit your information to be invited to an informational webinar. It’s as easy as that! Alternatively, contact the international office at St. John the Baptist at (631) 587-8000 for more information.
The Essence of Well-Being CREATING A LIFE BY
DESIGN
As we approach the time when everyone gets fired up about new goals, plans, and resolutions, it occurs to me that well-being isn’t just about choosing green smoothies, attending hot yoga, or achieving the perfect work-life balance. It’s about something deeper, richer, and far more personalized. It’s about intentionally living a life designed by YOU–a life where your choices, your passions, and your soul’s whispers align and create an existence that feels vibrant, purposeful, and unapologetically fulfilling.
The thing is…this kind of life doesn’t just happen.
We have to do some work–look within, draft our unique blueprint, and then begin the difficult work of discerning how we spend our time, the people we choose to spend it with, and the goals we wish to pursue.
A great life is not about achieving perfection. It’s about aligned intention. So how do we design a life that fuels our well-being?
I suggest five steps:
1. Define What Well-Being Means to YOU
Here’s where many of us go wrong. We inherit so many “shoulds” and “supposed tos” only to find ourselves depleted, exhausted, or unfulfilled. Well-being isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal. For some, it’s waking up to a quiet sunrise and journaling with a cup of herbal tea while writing the next best-selling book. For others, it’s about connection—wining and dining with friends until the early morning hours followed by sleeping in.
Ask yourself: What makes me feel alive? What fills me with joy or peace? What recharges my energy?
2.
Get Curious: Life Isn’t Meant to Be Lived on “Autopilot”
Let’s be real: too many of us sleepwalk through life. We keep busy ticking off never-ending to-do lists and prioritizing everyone else’s needs before our own, each day blending into the next. Sound familiar? If you’re nodding, it’s time to switch to manual and grab the wheel.
Start by asking yourself: Where in my life am I living by default? How much of my life aligns with my concept of an ideal life? When we live by default, we feel like life is happening to us, like we’re a leaf in the wind, vulnerable to unexpected changes and turns of events. When we live by default, we fail to create an inspiring vision for ourselves— one that ignites our passions and purpose.
What would fully stepping into the driver’s seat look like for you? Even small shifts—like saying “no” to people, places, and things that drain you—can amplify your joy and get you back on track to living a life wholly by your design.
3.
Tune Into Your Inner Compass
Did you know you have an inner compass? Well, you do, and I’d argue it’s more accurate than any GPS. It’s your intuition—your “gut instinct,” an inner knowing about what feels right and what doesn’t. Intuition is an incredibly powerful tool, but many of us have become disconnected from it. And that's not our fault—in a noisy world, we often have to intentionally carve out time to get quiet enough to hear what’s within.
Ask yourself: What do I really want? Then find quiet moments to hear the response your intuition shares with you. This might mean meditating, journaling, or just taking long, mindful walks to reconnect. The more you listen to your inner knowing, the clearer your ideal life blueprint becomes.
Susan
4. Design Each Day with Intention
Big dreams are built in baby steps. Want more joy? Schedule it on your calendar (after you determine what brings you joy). Craving connection? Set an intention to reach out to someone who lifts you up each week. Need rest? Block time on your calendar and protect it as if it were an obligation you made to someone else.
Designing each day with intention doesn’t mean ensuring every moment is productive. Some of the most rewarding insights and recharging moments happen when we do nothing. The key is aligning what gets done each day with what matters most to you.
5. Take Time to Reflect at the End of Each Day
Any change can spark resistance. Both internally—when self-talk begins to question whether we’re being selfish by focusing on our needs and wants. And externally— when others react to our shift in routines or efforts to create space for our own self-care.
The real questions to ask yourself are: How do I feel at the end of each day? Do I feel more energized, or more depleted? Do I feel inspired, or unfulfilled? Did I listen to my inner nudges, or did I go through the motions? Creating a life by design isn’t a linear process and it’s definitely not always a neat one either. There may be detours, doubts, and moments when you’re wondering if it’s all worth it (spoiler alert: it is).
Here's the big key to living a life you design as a pathway to well-being: Give yourself permission to evolve! And know that evolution is like a spiral where every loop brings you closer to your center, your inner truth. Try tuning in. Get honest about what lights you up. Then start making choices that align with your joy.
Ready? If so, I invite you to take a deep breath, grab a blank canvas, and start designing, because all of us deserve a life where we get to show up as the very best version of ourselves. You deserve to live your definition of well-being and to radiate your unique essence.

Equity Reformer Studio: Elevate Your Fitness
At the helm of Equity Reformer Studio is Eileen Jacinth, a seasoned fitness professional with nearly 30 years of experience. From her beginnings as a student-athlete to becoming a mom who wanted to stay active, Eileen’s love for fitness evolved into a thriving career as an instructor, trainer, and, ultimately, studio owner. Her journey into Pilates reformers began with curiosity and a client’s suggestion—and it was love at first spring. “I quickly realized the reformer is a great apparatus,” says Eileen. “It’s minimal impact, versatile, and can target muscles in ways traditional gym equipment simply can’t. My clients were hooked, and so was I.”
What Exactly is a Pilates Reformer?
For those new to the concept, a Pilates reformer looks like a low bed-like frame with a cushioned platform called the carriage that glides along a track. But it’s much more than it appears—this innovative apparatus is a powerhouse of versatility and effectiveness. Eileen describes it best:
"Not only does it incorporate the core fundamentals of Pilates, but it also incorporates springs and pulleys for diverse strength training. I convinced my clients to try it. There was no longer a need for big bulky gym equipment. The reformer allows you to work whatever muscle you would like to target. It’s better suited to help strengthen your knees and hips. Its minimal impact makes it so much less jarring on your joints. The moves are endless and multidirectional so it's never repetitive or boring."
Why Equity Reformer Stands Out
At Equity Reformer Studio, it’s all about the personal touch. With a philosophy of “reformer with a twist,” the studio caters workouts to individual and group needs. Unlike franchise studios with rigid plans, Eileen and her team ensure every session is fresh and tailored.
“Clients are never forced into a beginner session if they’re ready for more,” Eileen shares. “And for those recovering or new to exercise, we make sure Level 1 is a supportive yet challenging experience. No matter your level, you’ll leave energized and excited to return.”
A Team of Fitness Experts
The instructors at Equity Reformer Studio are as dynamic as the workouts they lead. Each instructor, personally selected by Eileen, brings a unique background and expertise to the studio.
"Many of our instructors are personal trainers. Some come from the world of dance. Some are mastery-level yoga instructors," Eileen shares. "We have a beautifully diverse team, all certified in reformer Pilates but with specialties that complement each other. This allows us to offer a variety of approaches while maintaining our signature standard of excellence.
Beyond the Reformer: Introducing the Labs
Equity Reformer Studio isn’t just about Pilates. The recent expansion allows for two studios to run simultaneously, offering clients even more opportunities to enhance their fitness journey. In addition to the Glute Lab, Lift Lab, and Stretch Lab, the studio features innovative wellness services, including the first-ever FDA-cleared LED Red Light therapy bed, which promotes recovery and overall wellness.
A Heartfelt Thanks
Eileen’s gratitude shines through as she reflects on her journey: “To my clients, both longtime and new—thank you for trusting us to be a part of your lives. The resurgence of the reformer is proof that this fitness method is here to stay. And for me, running the studio has never felt like a job because I truly love what I do.”
Find Your Flow This New Year
Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or just starting your wellness journey, Equity Reformer Studio offers an experience unlike any other. With workouts that are innovative, engaging, and tailored to you, this studio is redefining what it means to get fit—and have fun doing it.

BABYLON VILLAGE’S NEW GIFT OF ART: The Heartwarming Story of The Christensen Gallery
Nestled in the heart of Babylon Village, The Christensen Gallery is more than just a space for fine art—it's a celebration of a community that has shaped its owner, from childhood memories to dreams fulfilled. Born and raised in North Babylon, Theresa fondly recalls strolling through the streets of Babylon Village, where she spent much of her early life. She remembers attending dance classes at Positions Dance Studio, and afterwards grabbing a sweet treat at Wilhelm’s Bakery—now Torta Fina—and catching movies at the Babylon Theater, which has since become The Argyle.
Thersa's love for art began early. According to her mother, she was drawing before she could walk! Later on, her mentor, Larry Nye encouraged Theresa to share her art with others even when she felt discouraged. Thanks to his support, she entered her first local art show at the Nathaniel Conklin House—a pivotal moment that sparked a two-decade tradition of displaying her work there. But it was her close friendship with local business owner Conor Hartnett that opened the door to a dream she once thought was out of reach. Conor admired her talent and commissioned Theresa to paint eight murals on the walls of his business, Mary Carroll’s Irish Pub. When the gallery space next door became available, Conor proposed the idea and offered her the opportunity to open The Christensen Gallery. Together, they transformed the space into
a stunning modern gallery that now stands as the only dedicated fine art gallery on this part of Long Island’s South Shore.
The Christensen Gallery welcomes visitors with rotating exhibitions, featuring a different artist each month and hosting opening receptions to celebrate their work. Beyond the art, the gallery radiates a warm sense of nostalgia for the village that raised its owner and continues to inspire her love of art. Offering more than just a gallery, it’s a heartfelt connection to the heart of Babylon Village.

Snowy Owls: Quiet Wonders of Winter
When I first thought of including an article on snowy owls in our winter issue, I envisioned a piece that celebrated their resilience and ability to adapt. These majestic creatures, with their powerful wings and piercing yellow eyes, bring an unmistakable sense of awe when they arrive on Long Island’s shores. However, as I shared my early draft with a dedicated wildlife enthusiast and photographer, I learned that while snowy owls inspire wonder, their lives may be more fragile than I had initially realized.
Unlike typical migratory birds, snowy owls don’t travel south as a natural pattern. Only a few, often young owls, make the journey from the Arctic to Long Island, usually driven by the need for a better food supply. It’s a response to scarcity, rather than a seasonal choice, reminding us that their arrival here signals both beauty and a deeper need. As I learned more, it became clear that my initial words had painted a picture of resilience, yet their journey speaks more to their delicate place in nature’s balance.
For those lucky enough to spot a snowy owl, seeing them is a breathtaking experience. Their white feathers against a winter landscape are a rare sight, and it’s tempting to get close. However, out of respect for these birds, many wildlife photographers choose not to share their sighting locations. It’s not about territory but about protecting the owls from being overwhelmed by spectators. Snowy owls need ample rest during the day to hunt at dawn and dusk, and too many interruptions can put a strain on their energy and well-being.
So as we enjoy the rare sight of snowy owls on Long Island this season, let’s remember to honor their need for peace. Observing from a respectful distance helps ensure their safety and allows us to appreciate their beauty without causing them harm. These quiet visitors are a reminder of the wonders that exist when we learn to coexist gently with nature.
SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER, ONE COOKIE AT A TIME
RECIPES
BY
DENA FRENZA
What better way to spread love and smiles throughout the holiday season than with cookies–especially these Italian treats that are a little more special than your standard chocolate chip. Both of these recipes make plenty of cookies, making them perfect for parties and for gifting to your friends and family, or someone who could use a little extra cheer.
Cantucci
Makes about 64 cookies
Cantucci are delicious Italian biscotti that originate from Prato, Tuscany. These “twice-baked” almond cookies are easy to make and perfect to dunk in your morning coffee or afternoon espresso. In Tuscany they are served alongside Vin Santo, a traditional after-dinner dessert wine. Many people even dip the cantucci in the wine. It is such a great treat.
INGREDIENTS
• 4 Cups Flour
• 1½ Teaspoons Baking Powder
• Pinch of Salt
• 12 Tablespoons Butter (put in a glass bowl and melt in the oven, and save a little for greasing the parchment)
• 3 Eggs (plus 1 beaten egg for brushing the Cantucci)
• 2 Cups Sugar
• Zest of 1 Lemon
• 3 Tablespoons Vanilla Extract
• 1½ Cups Sliced Almonds
METHOD
1. In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
2. In a separate bowl, combine the 3 beaten eggs with sugar. Add the zest of a lemon. Beat well.
3. Mix in the vanilla extract and butter.
4. Using a spatula, slowly add the flour to the egg mixture to form a dough.
5. Sprinkle your counter with flour.

6. Move the dough to the flour-dusted counter.
7. Knead the almonds into the dough.
8. Cut the dough into 4 equal pieces and form into logs. Each log will be about 12” long and 2“ wide. Wrap in plastic wrap and put in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
9. Preheat the oven to 375° F and butter two large parchment-lined baking sheets.
10. Place the logs on the sheet and brush each log with the beaten egg.
11. Bake for about 20 minutes until the log becomes golden brown.
12. Let the logs rest for 10 minutes.
13. Slice into 1” thick cookies.
14. Then put them back on the cookie sheet (lined with parchment, cut side up) and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes or until they’re cooked through. I like my cantucci soft, so I take them out at the 10-12 minute mark. If you like them harder, leave them in longer. 15. Serve.
**Recipe Note: You can store cantucci in an airtight container for at least a month.
Anginetti Cookies
Makes about 55 cookies
Italian Anginetti cookies are soft, cake-like cookies that are so delicious you can’t stop eating them. Traditionally, these cookies are made for Christmas, Easter, and weddings, so I change up the color of the sprinkles based on the occasion. These are often flavored with lemon, but my favorite version uses vanilla instead.
INGREDIENTS
The Cookies
• 3½ Cups All-Purpose Flour
• 2 Tablespoons Baking Powder
• ⅛ Teaspoon Salt
• 4 Eggs
• 1 Cup Sugar
• 1 Cup Vegetable Shortening
• 2 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract
METHOD
Icing
• 2 Cups Confectioners’ Sugar
• 2 Tablespoons Butter, Melted
• ½ Cup Heavy Cream
• ¾ Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
• Colored Sprinkles for Decoration (optional)
1. Preheat the oven to 375° F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
2. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
3. Using an electric mixer (or a hand mixer), cream the eggs and the sugar (about 2 minutes).
4. Add in the vegetable shortening and vanilla. Combine well and then gradually add in the flour mixture to form the dough.
5. Next, roll the dough into small balls (about a tablespoon each).
6. Place the balls about 1 inch apart on the parchment paper.
7. Bake for 11 minutes until the tops of the cookies begin to crackle a little and the bottom is light brown. Be sure to watch the clock. You do not want to overbake these. Remove from the oven and cool completely.
8. For the icing, mix the confectioners’ sugar, butter, heavy cream, and vanilla in a bowl. If it is too thick, add in a little more cream.
9. Dip the top of each cookie in the icing and add sprinkles.
10. Serve
Food has an incredible way of connecting us, especially during the holiday season and into the New Year. It’s the heart of every celebration, where laughter is shared, memories are made, and traditions are passed down. This year, we’re honored to feature recipes from a talented food enthusiast, restaurateur, and cookbook author–Dena Fenza–who truly understands the magic that happens around the table. Her recipes are inspired by her family’s ItalianAmerican roots and her grandfather’s guiding principle: “Food is love. It has to come from the heart.”
Brunch Recipes to Warm Your Winter
What better way to start the new year than with a New Year’s Day brunch with family or friends. These delicious and comforting dishes are perfect for your New Year’s celebration or for any winter weekend gathering.
Zucchini Frittata
Serves 6
Zucchini Frittata stuffed with prosciutto cotto and fresh mozzarella is an easy frittata recipe that even the most novice of cooks can make. This makes a great breakfast/brunch when family or friends are visiting, but I also love to serve it as a side dish with soup for dinner.
INGREDIENTS
• 3 Medium Zucchini (about 1 pound), Sliced into thin half moons
• 8 Ounces Fresh Mozzarella, Sliced and patted dry with paper towels
Broccoli Rabe and Sausage Strata Serves 8
This Broccoli Rabe and Sausage Strata is a delicious savory bread pudding. A strata is a dish typically made from layers of bread, eggs, cheese, and various other ingredients. It is known for its versatility because ingredients can be customized according to personal taste or what is on hand. So you can be creative with it and adapt it to dietary restrictions. It’s a great option when hosting a celebratory brunch because it can be made in advance (see note below).
INGREDIENTS
Broccoli Rabe
• 2 Bunches Broccoli Rabe
• 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
• 2 Garlic Cloves
Strata
• 8 Cups Cubed Old Italian Bread
• 4 Cups Milk
• 4 Eggs
• 2 Cups Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese, plus extra for sprinkling
• 1 Teaspoon Salt
METHOD
• ⅛ Teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes
• ½ Teaspoon Salt
• 1 Teaspoon Peppers
• 1 Pound Cheese and Parsley Sausage, out of the casing
• 1 Teaspoon Olive Oil
• Butter to coat a 13 x 9 baking dish (I use Pyrex)
1. In a frying pan add the olive oil, red pepper flakes, and garlic. Sauté on low heat until the garlic is cooked through.
2. Meanwhile, boil water in a pasta pot and add salt. Cut a half an inch off the lower stem of each broccoli rabe stalk.
3. Boil the broccoli rabe for about 6 minutes until the stems get soft. Remove from the water and drain. Let it cool and chop into smaller pieces. Add it to the garlic and olive oil and sauté for about 5 to 10 minutes, adding the salt. Remove the garlic and remove from heat.
METHOD
1. Preheat your oven to 375° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a bowl, combine the zucchini with chopped onions, olive oil, and black pepper.
3. Put in a single layer on the baking sheet and bake for about 30 minutes or until the vegetables are cooked through. Cool.
4. In a bowl, beat the eggs, then add in the grated Pecorino and salt.
5. Add in the cooked zucchini and breadcrumbs and combine well.
6. Put a piece of parchment paper in the bottom of a round 10” shallow baking dish. Brush the parchment with olive oil on all sides.
7. Put half of the egg/zucchini mixture in the dish.
8. Top with a layer of the prosciutto cotto and mozzarella.
9. Top with the remainder of the egg/zucchini mixture and put in the oven.
10. Cook for about 25 minutes or until the egg is cooked through. Serve.
4. Preheat your oven to 350°.
5. In another frying pan, add a teaspoon of olive oil. Heat on low, then add the sausage. Break up the sausage using the side of your wooden spoon into small bits. You can raise the heat to medium if you need. Once the sausage is cooked through, turn off the flame.
6. Butter your baking dish. Cut the bread into small pieces and add to the baking dish. It is best to use old bread for this.
7. In a bowl mix the milk, the eggs, the grated cheese, the salt, and pepper. Add the broccoli rabe and sausage and combine well.
8. Pour the mixture over the bread. Pat down any bread with your hand that is not covered in this mixture. Sprinkle some more grated cheese on top.
9. Cover with aluminum foil and let it sit on the counter for 30 minutes. Then bake in the oven for about 20 minutes or until the center does not jiggle. Serve.
**Recipe Note. This can be made the night before. If you decide to do this, you must toast the bread on a baking sheet for a few minutes in the oven at 250°. Follow all the other directions above the same way.
