25 YEARS AND CELEBRATING
The Victorian Room has been a cherished part of our community. Since it first opened its doors, this beautiful venue has hosted countless private events, from bridal showers to intimate weddings, corporate gatherings, and bereavements. Each event has been marked by the welcoming atmosphere, personalized catering, and exceptional chefs that define The Victorian Room. As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on its rich history and the legacy that has made it a loved destination for private events and more.
A Journey of Creating Comfort and Memories on Main Street
In 2000, Gina and her partner, Lenny Jaworowski, embarked on a journey that would not only shape their lives but also transform the community around them. As pioneers on Main Street, they opened Milk and Sugar, a quaint café that quickly became the neighborhood's first gathering spot, setting the stage for the vibrant local scene that followed. At just 25 years old, Gina’s passion for quality and creativity took root, embodying the hard work and dedication that would define her identity as a local entrepreneur.
As Milk and Sugar flourished, it became more than just a café—it became a symbol of the growing Main Street community. Families would stroll through, enjoying life’s simple pleasures, reflecting the values that Gina and Lenny had built into the business. Soon, continuing their commitment to quality, they expanded their vision and created a sweet shoppe, Milk and Cookies, for the neighborhood.
As time passed, Gina’s journey evolved with the opening of Pixie Dust, a children's party store inspired by her own children growing up on Main Street. Designed with a creative garden where kids could play and express themselves, Pixie Dust became a hub for old-school fun and imaginative activities. It reflected Gina’s desire to provide the community’s children a space to explore their creativity, much like her children had done.
Gina and Lenny took yet another bold step with the opening of Barndoor, a venture that brought a farm-to-table atmosphere to Bayshore. While COVID presented challenges, it also gave the family an opportunity to reflect and make important decisions about their future, ultimately strengthening their bond and reinforcing their focus on family.
Over the years, as Main Street flourished and more entrepreneurs became established, The Victorian Room emerged, capturing the essence of Milk and Sugar and Gina’s other venues. With a country French feel, the venue provides an intimate, welcoming space for private parties, embodying the same warmth and charm that had made her previous ventures so beloved. The Victorian Room has since become a treasured destination where families and friends gather to acknowledge and commemorate life’s most meaningful moments.
Each of these ventures—Milk and Sugar, Milk and Cookies, Pixie Dust, and Barndoor—holds a special place in Gina’s heart. They are not just businesses; they reflect the values and love that Gina has poured into Main Street for over two decades. As she looks to the future, she is deeply grateful for the community's unwavering support, which has made The Victorian Room a go-to destination for special occasions.
“I want to thank the community for celebrating with me throughout my journey on Main Street, and I look forward to cherishing many more years with you at The Victorian Room.”
Love, Gina Marie

The Root Cause Solution
AT THE FOREFRONT OF FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE
Meet Mary Tufano, a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist and owner of The Root Cause Solution, a full-service diagnostic lab testing company in the functional medicine space. According to Mary, functional medicine is the key to achieving optimal health. “We are in a health crisis,” Mary explains. “Illness and disease have skyrocketed, and they do not discriminate. Every age, gender, and ethnic background has been inflicted with physical and mental ailments that impact the quality and longevity of our lives. As a result, an increasing number of people are turning to functional medicine.”
Mary Tufano, FDN-P, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner Founder, The Root Cause Solution
FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE IS THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE
Functional medicine isn’t exactly a new concept. It’s been around for years and is now being acknowledged for its benefits. More and more individuals are incorporating functional medicine as an alternate or integrative approach to their conventional healthcare practices. Functional medicine works to find the root of chronic issues such as hormonal imbalances, autoimmune conditions, digestive issues, liver/kidney dysfunction, energy production, depression/anxiety, and more. The symptoms tell us something, but the root of the problem tells us everything.
The Root Cause Solution is at the forefront of the functional medicine space, focusing on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues by providing personalized care for each client. Their diagnostic lab testing takes a comprehensive look into every major organ system in the body, allowing them to take a holistic approach to healing. This approach is tailored to meet each client’s unique needs, lifestyle, and sensitivities, using food as medicine and supplements to support healing and improve, prevent, or reverse health conditions.
HOW DOES A FUNCTIONAL DIAGNOSTIC NUTRITIONIST IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSE OF YOUR SYMPTOMS?
Functional medicine views the body as one integrated system, not a collection of independent organs divided up by medical specialties. To put it simply, it treats the whole system, not just the symptoms. Identifying the root cause of health issues is the foundation of functional medicine. A functional evaluation goes beyond a standard medical workup, digging deeper to understand why symptoms develop.
Sometimes, the root cause of pain is obvious. For example, if you have a broken arm, your doctor doesn’t need to guess what to do to help you heal. However, some health conditions are more ambiguous – you get plenty of sleep but are still battling fatigue, have unexplained weight gain, or are living with chronic pain with no known underlying cause. This is where functional medicine can help. According to Mary, “As a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist, I use your background, medical history, biochemical markers found through diagnostic lab testing, and lifestyle factors to collect data on the current state of your health and determine what’s causing your symptoms. I then use this data to create a personalized
“As an FDN Practitioner, many people come to me as a last resort. They have ‘tried everything’ and hit a wall. What they don’t understand is that they are often dealing with several levels of dysfunction in the body, and these complications remain hidden from view. These hidden stressors compound over time and create chaos in the body. Symptom-free living is simply not possible until these issues are identified and properly managed. In other words, symptoms are not the problem; they are the result of the problem!”
– Mary Tufano
treatment plan that fits your lifestyle and helps you heal so that you may live your healthiest life. Diagnostic lab testing is a key part of how this is accomplished. These tests help to more accurately determine any biochemical, nutritional, or physiological imbalances that are contributing to your condition.”
WHAT IS DIAGNOSTIC LAB TESTING?
Diagnostic lab testing takes a deep dive into every major organ system in the body, including hormones, the immune system, digestion, detoxification, energy production, and the nervous system. It uses blood, stool, urine, and saliva to provide insights into chronic health issues.
This testing identifies hidden imbalances and determines how well your organs and systems are functioning. It looks for the underlying cause of your symptoms and can also identify trends toward illness that can be stopped, slowed, or reversed through proactive treatment.
WHY TEST?
Functional medicine practitioners recognize that standard medical lab ranges often provide insufficient information about a patient’s condition. Many patients are told their labs are “within normal range” but still experience symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners order more in-depth labs to get a better look, evaluating results in a narrower range, known as the "optimal range," to catch certain markers early on. This way of practicing allows practitioners to reverse or stop disease progression altogether.
Note: While some clients have successfully used their HSA/FSA to cover certain labs and supplements, many insurance plans don’t cover functional medicine, which can be a deterrent from seeking out this kind of support. However, the cost of these tests is often manageable, making it a worthwhile investment in your long-term health.
THE ROOT

• Uses a FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE APPROACH, focusing on the WHOLE PERSON.
• Looks for THE ROOT CAUSE, not just chasing symptoms.
• Bridges the gap between medical care and SELF-CARE.

Stretching: A Key to Optimum Health and Longevity
As routines settle back into place, fall presents an ideal opportunity to refocus on practices that support long-term health and well-being. Among these, daily stretching stands out as one of the most beneficial yet frequently overlooked habits. Stretching is vital in maintaining flexibility, enhancing mobility, and ensuring overall physical wellbeing. It helps keep muscles long, lean, and flexible, crucial for preventing injuries and maintaining a good range of motion in the joints. We spoke with Corinne Brown, the founder and co-owner of Fitness Incentive, to delve into the many benefits of stretching and how it can contribute to a healthier, more active life.
The Importance of Flexibility and Balance: As routines settle back into place, fall presents an ideal opportunity to refocus on practices that support long-term health and well-being. Among these, daily stretching stands out as one of the most beneficial yet frequently overlooked habits. Stretching is vital in maintaining flexibility, enhancing mobility, and ensuring overall physical well-being. It helps keep muscles long, lean, and flexible, crucial for preventing injuries and maintaining a good range of motion in the joints.
Aging and Muscle Tightness: What You Need to Know: As we age, our muscles become shorter and tighter, leading to decreased flexibility and range of motion. This phenomenon is often due to decreased physical activity, loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia), and reduced elasticity in connective tissues. Understanding this process can help individuals take proactive steps to maintain flexibility as they age.
Combatting the Effects of Modern Lifestyles:Prolonged periods of poor posture, such as sitting at a desk, driving, or looking at phone screens, can contribute significantly to muscle tightness. Corinne suggests incorporating stretching, yoga, or Pilates into your routine at least three times a week to counteract these effects and improve your overall well-being.
The Motivation Behind Teaching Stretch Classes:Corinne’s passion for stretching is driven by her personal goal to stay active, flexible, and balanced for as long as possible, enabling her to continue doing the things she loves. At Fitness Incentive, she developed her specialized stretch classes with this philosophy in mind, offering participants a broad range of stretching and balance moves that she has personally refined over the years.
These exercises are designed to be safe and effective, helping individuals of all ages and fitness levels maintain their physical health and vitality. Corinne emphasizes that consistency is key to achieving these benefits, and she has seen remarkable improvements in her students, such as the ability to lift their bodies off the floor without using their hands—a metric she uses to gauge their progress.
Tips for Stretching Beginners: For those new to stretching, Corinne advises patience and consistency. No matter your current flexibility level, improvement is possible. Tailoring your stretching routine to your individual needs will help you see progress and achieve your goals.
Celebrating 40 Years of Fitness Incentive
This year, Fitness Incentive celebrates its 40th anniversary — a milestone that Corinne holds close to her heart. Reflecting on four decades of building a fitness community, she expresses her gratitude for the opportunity to work with countless members and staff, all while nurturing a commitment to health and wellness. As she looks ahead, her passion for fostering physical well-being remains as strong as ever. In her own words, Corinne shares, “After all these years, I still stand by our motto of ‘Building Bodies That Last.’”
Letting Go With Love
By Susan Eckert
Crisp autumn air filled my lungs as I stood watching a single sienna-colored leaf float gently to the ground. Only yesterday, it seemed, the trees were bursting with bright green, their limbs alive with new blossoms dancing in the early summer breeze. The single leaf was a quiet reminder of life’s cycles. Seasons. Ebbs and flows. Inevitable endings that signal new beginnings.
As trees begin their seasonal release, I’m reminded that there’s an undeniable strength in letting go, a resilience that allows the wheel of life to keep turning. But then honesty whispers: letting go isn’t always easy. Especially when what we release carries the weight of losing someone we love.
There’s no escaping the swirl of emotions that accompanies life’s most poignant goodbyes. Whether it’s choosing to end a toxic relationship, watching your child step into adulthood and move away, or navigating heartache due to the loss of a partner or parent—each comes with profound heartache.
And yet, there’s an incredible feeling of strength that follows when we willingly release what we can no longer hold onto…when we stop trying to control outcomes, when we commit to pursuing joy, when we allow ourselves, and others, to honor life’s flow.
Imagine, just for a moment, what might be on the other side of releasing whatever it is that weighs you down or keeps you up at night. What if, instead of fighting with fists clenched in sorrow, fear, bitterness, or regret, you choose to let go with love?
Letting go with love invites peaceful surrender. It asks us to embrace the life we’ve been given and the path we’ve walked, and to honor the growth and wisdom gathered along the way. It opens the door to gratitude—heartfelt thanks for the beauty of what was.
It’s saying to yourself:
“I release this not because it’s easy, but because I am worthy of peace.”
The truth is, letting go can be (and often is) an act of love. A gift. When we stop trying to control life, when we learn to stand squarely in the present moment rather than looking back and longing for what was, we create space for growth, expansion, healing, and new beginnings.
Four Tips for Letting Go with Love:
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings
Emotions aren’t roadblocks; they’re signposts. And all are valid. Allow yourself to feel the sadness, the anger, the confusion. By facing these emotions head-on, you invite them to move through you rather than becoming trapped within you. By honoring your feelings, you’re one step closer to releasing them.
2. Practice Self-Compassion
Heed the gentle voice that says, “It’s okay to take your time.” Letting go is a process, a gradual unfolding. Treat yourself with the kindness and patience you’d offer a dear friend navigating a similar path.
3. Rewrite Your Inner “Story”
The stories we tell ourselves about a situation can either keep us stuck or free us to move forward. Shift your perspective. What if letting go was an acknowledgment that love never dies? Or that love can thrive regardless of physical presence or proximity?
4. Embrace Uncertainty
By letting go, you’re creating space—physical, emotional, and spiritual. Space for new opportunities, deeper relationships, and a more profound connection with yourself. The unknown is the space in which possibilities live. Don’t fear uncertainty—embrace it.
Make letting go with love a daily practice. Upon waking each day, consciously choose to release what’s outside your control. To forgive. To offer yourself and others grace. To let go of small irritations, lingering resentment, the anxious need to predict every step of your journey. Instead revel in the beautiful memories that lighten your heart and soul. In doing so, you’ll invite more joy, flow, and freedom into your life.
The Ripple of Release
Letting go with love creates a beautiful ripple effect. We don’t just free ourselves from pain and struggle—we show those around us a new way to navigate life’s transitions. Our children, our partners, our friends—they learn that release isn’t a sign of weakness, but rather the result of wisdom and strength.
As you learn to let go with love, know you are worthy of the peace and freedom that comes with it. You are worthy of the love that fills the space where regret, fear, or control once lived. More importantly, you are worthy of living a life in flow.
Starting today, let go with love. And watch how everything else falls perfectly into place.

A Season for Awareness
September and October are pivotal months for raising awareness about ovarian, prostate, and breast cancers. In this issue, we unite these efforts into one message of strength and solidarity, honoring the resilience of those affected and the power of community support. Understanding your body’s signals and taking proactive steps can be life-saving. Use this season to educate yourself, get checked, and encourage those around you to do the same. Whether it’s a routine screening, scheduling that overdue check-up, or asking your doctor the right questions, now is the time to take charge of your health.
“Pink by the Bay” Shines a Light on Teal
The annual health campaign raises awareness for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Northwell has teamed up with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and local breast cancer coalitions. Together, these organizations help Northwell raise awareness and give individuals the knowledge to help prevent, detect, and treat these types of cancers through screenings.
This month-long initiative kicked off on October 1st at Babylon Town Hall with a health fair and press conference. Pink by the Bay’s mission is to support breast cancer survivors while promoting education and increasing awareness in the community.
While many are aware of breast cancer, people often forget to take the steps to detect it in its earliest stages. Increased education and early detection are critical. We hope that seeing all the pink will remind the community to schedule their annual mammograms.
This year, the event will spotlight the passing of the torch from ovarian cancer awareness to breast cancer awareness. Ovarian and breast cancers can be linked through genetics, and some risk factors for ovarian cancer may also increase a person’s breast cancer risk. “Pink by the Bay” is "shining a light on teal" — the color associated with ovarian cancer awareness — to help raise awareness of the disease while promoting education on symptoms, risk factors, and available support.

Insight into Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is often challenging to detect early, as it cannot be identified through a routine Pap smear, and its symptoms are often subtle.
Signs and Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
Just as with breast cancer, early detection of ovarian cancer is crucial. Here are some common and less common symptoms to watch for:
Common Symptoms
• Persistent Bloating - Swelling in the lower abdomen or pelvis.
• Pelvic or Abdominal Pain - Discomfort in the abdomen, back, or pelvis.
• Trouble Eating or Feeling Full Quickly - Feeling full after eating only a small amount.
• Frequent Urination - Needing to urinate more often.
Less Common Symptoms
• Pain During Sex - Discomfort or pain during intercourse.
• Back Pain - Pain or discomfort in the lower back.
• Fatigue - Feeling unusually tired or exhausted.
• Menstrual Changes - Unusual changes in your menstrual cycle, including additional bleeding or vaginal discharge.
• Digestive Issues - Upset stomach, heartburn, constipation, or changes in bowel habits.
If these symptoms persist for more than two weeks despite normal interventions, it is important to consult a physician immediately. Remember, there is currently no effective screening test for ovarian cancer, making awareness of these signs essential.

Raising Awareness: A Call to Action Against Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, and early detection is key to improving outcomes. Despite its prevalence, awareness and proactive screening are often overlooked. On Long Island, efforts to raise awareness and promote regular screening are gaining momentum, with community initiatives like Women & Men Against Prostate Cancer, Inc. taking a leading role.
The Importance of Screening and Taking Action
Early detection is crucial, as prostate cancer often develops slowly. Regular screenings can catch the disease in its early stages, significantly improving treatment success.
Proactively discussing screening with your doctor can be life-saving.
Prostate Cancer Screening: What You Need to Know
Who Should Get Screened?
Men should begin discussing prostate cancer screening with their healthcare provider around age 50, or earlier (around 40-45) if they are at higher risk, such as having a family history of prostate cancer or being African American.
How Often Should Men Get Screened?
All adult men should get screened annually.
What Does Screening Involve?
Prostate cancer can often be detected early through a PSA blood test and a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE). If either test is abnormal, further testing can confirm the presence of cancer, often at a more treatable stage.
What If You Don’t Have a Primary Doctor?
Even without a primary care doctor, men can still get screened. Many clinics, hospitals, and community health programs offer screenings, and you can seek referrals through your insurance or find local events offering these services. Some sites even provide free or low-cost prostate cancer testing during the year.

Acupuncture for Sports Injury and Recovery
As the fall sports season kicks into high gear, whether you're a professional athlete or someone just getting back into a regular workout routine, acupuncture can play a vital role in improving your recovery time and helping with those nagging injuries that often arise. Athletes of all kinds benefit from acupuncture, which is now well known for its effective treatment of musculoskeletal injuries commonly experienced by active individuals.
I have often treated patients suffering from conditions such as sore knees, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, lower back pain, swimmer’s shoulder, overstretched muscles, inflammation of joints, groin pulls, muscle fatigue, headaches, and bruising from contact sports like soccer, lacrosse, and football.
Many acupuncturists, including myself, are also licensed massage therapists. This combination of acupuncture and massage therapy creates a powerful treatment for injuries and recovery. Typically, I will first massage the affected
By Anthony Cerabino, B.M., LMT, M.S., L.ac
muscle group using a liniment or painrelieving oil, then apply acupuncture to decompress the tight area, relieving spasms. Heat is often used for subacute and chronic injuries, while cold packs are reserved for acute injuries that have occurred within the last 36 hours. Sometimes, personal preferences dictate the treatment — as I say, "Whatever works!"
Recovery time is essential for anyone feeling sore after a workout. Acupuncture and massage therapy help move stagnant blood and metabolic waste, such as lactic acid build-up, which can be uncomfortable. By clearing out the old blood, space is made for fresh, oxygenated blood that speeds up muscle tissue repair. Cupping, another technique used by bodyworkers, can also shorten recovery time. Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps brought this technique into the spotlight, highlighting its benefits in sports recovery. Additionally, moxibustion, an herbal heat treatment using mugwort, is another technique
in which acupuncturists are trained. It quickly reduces inflammation and aids in the speedy recovery of bruises and strains.
To demystify acupuncture, here are three basic ways it works. First, the needle enters the muscle and "pops" it, releasing pressure. Second, the body recognizes the needle as an “invader” and sends white blood cells to the area to promote healing, clearing out metabolic waste that causes inflammation and pain. Finally, needles inserted into remote areas of the body can help heal issues along the corresponding energy pathways, making it a great approach for those who can’t tolerate direct contact near the site of pain.
With the busy fall sports season upon us, incorporating acupuncture and massage therapy into your maintenance, recovery, and rehabilitation routine can make a significant difference. Just be sure to seek out licensed practitioners for the best care.

No matter what genre you prefer, there’s nothing like taking a break from the busyness of life and curling up with a great book. For this season’s reading recommendations, we have some great titles that caught our attention, and we’re honored to highlight two poignant books written by our editor, Ashley Brown. Learn more about her, or pick up her books, at www.ashleyauthor.com.
A Tail of Grace: A Year in Search of Home after the Death of My Soul-Dog by Ashley Brown
A must-read for any animal lover, this collection of memoir-style essays takes us with Ashley Brown on a journey she intentionally devoted to grieving the loss of her beloved dog, listening, learning, and looking for home within herself, without the companion who had been by side throughout her entire adulthood. She shares moments and reflections on this transformative year — her travels, anxieties, encounters with wild animals, solitude, foster dogs, impending divorce, and finally, adopting a dog and moving. In each story from both her literal and spiritual adventures, Brown seeks the wisdom found in nature, the opportunity born from lostness, the beauty in the messes, the grace laced within the pain. The book would also make a thoughtful gift for anyone who has recently lost a beloved family member or is on their own grief journey.
Letters to the Daughter I’ll Never Have by Ashley Brown Brown’s first nonfiction book, Letters to the Daughter I’ll Never Have, is a raw and vulnerable exploration of her decision not to have children. More and more women, and men, are choosing not to have children, but that choice is seldom a simple or easy one to make. In this book of letters to her imaginary daughter, Ashley Brown delves into the grief over what she'll be missing out on — as she shares stories and her values as if she were raising a daughter — but also explains the reasons for her decision and the complex challenges of raising a child in today's world. Sometimes brutally candid, sometimes funny and heartwarming, these letters are really all about celebrating love and family, no matter what your family looks like.

Facing Fall: Skincare Tips from Hillary of Hello Gorgeous Skincare and Esthetics
Fall is a time when many of us reconsider our skincare routines, especially after months of sun exposure. While some adjustments may be necessary, not everyone’s skin reacts the same way to seasonal changes. To help us navigate these decisions, we reached out to Hillary of Hello Gorgeous Skincare and Esthetics, who answers our questions and offers her expert advice on how to best care for your skin during the cooler months.
LIST: Some of us stopped using retinol over the summer to avoid sun sensitivity — should we start using it again now that it’s fall? If so, how should we reintroduce it into our routines?
HELLO GORGEOUS: Retinol is a great product to keep in your skincare routine to boost skin cell turnover — think fresh, new skin! Now that sun exposure is lower, it’s a good time to start or restart. Apply a pea-sized amount to areas where you want to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, but avoid the eye area. Start slowly, using it 2-3 days a week, and build up from there. If you notice any irritation or sensitivity, scale back and try 'sandwiching' the retinol between two layers of moisturizer to buffer its effects. Always apply it at night to avoid sun sensitivity, and be sure to pair it with sunscreen during the day for added protection.
LIST: Is fall the best time for a chemical peel?
HELLO GORGEOUS: We love peels in the fall! After a summer of sun, it’s great to give your skin a nice refresher. Chemical peels can help with hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, and even active acne. Fall is an ideal time for peels since your skin is less exposed to direct sunlight, which can sometimes make postpeel skin more vulnerable. There are many different strengths and formulas of chemical peels, so it’s important to consult a trusted provider to make sure you’re getting the right one for your skin type and goals. At Hello Gorgeous, we offer a variety of peels tailored to different skin concerns.
LIST: Does my daily skincare routine need to change in the fall?
HELLO GORGEOUS: It depends on your skin. Some people can continue their normal regimen, but usually in the fall there is less humidity, meaning our skin can get quite dry. Some ways we can help combat this are to increase water intake, use a humidifier in our home, and/or switch to skincare products that are more hydrating.
LIST: If I am not out in the sun much during the fall, do I still need to wear sunscreen?
HELLO GORGEOUS: Yes, even in the fall/winter the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can still cause damage to our skin. We recommend wearing SPF 30 or above all year long, every day. Wearing sunscreen doesn’t just prevent skin cancer, it also helps to keep our skin looking youthful by preventing sun spots and fine lines and wrinkles.
LIST: Any final words of advice?
HELLO GORGEOUS: Skincare is highly individualized, and each person's skin has unique needs. It's important to consult with a professional to ensure you're using the most effective products and treatments for your specific concerns. We offer consultations and carry a full line of skincare products and treatments to help you achieve your best skin.

The Argyle Theatre is gearing up for a spectacular new season, featuring a quartet of standout shows and exciting renovations that will be completed just in time for the first curtain to rise. This year’s lineup includes A Christmas Carol: The Musical, Jersey Boys, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Music Man.
Following the success of last season’s approach, where the theatre focused on four shows with extended eightweek runs, The Argyle is sticking to the same winning formula for 20242025. Co-owner Dylan Perlman, who operates the venue with his father Mark, shares, “When we choose shows that really capture the audience’s interest, we see them grow in popularity week after week.”
The season will kick off with the beloved holiday classic A Christmas
Carol: The Musical, running from November 7th to January 5th. Next up is Jersey Boys, which dives into the onstage triumphs and behind-thescenes drama of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, from January 23rd to April 16th. Rounding out the season are two timeless favorites: Fiddler on the Roof from April 24th to June 15th, and The Music Man from July 10th through August 31st, 2025.
To prepare for the new season, the theatre has undergone a series of much-needed renovations. The exterior has been refreshed with a brand-new marquee, designed in collaboration with the Village of Babylon, while the iconic vertical blue neon sign spelling out 'Babylon' has been restored to its former glory to honor the Village of Babylon. “That sign has really seen better days, so
getting it relit was a top priority,” Perlman says. “It’s going to be stunning and will really brighten up the front of the building.”
Inside, patrons will enjoy improved temperature control, enhanced production facilities, and a muchanticipated expansion of the ladies’ restroom. “Everyone knows what that line looks like at intermission,” Perlman jokes, adding that the men’s facilities have also been upgraded. They are also doing a full lobby renovation, including adding a stateof-the-art 360 bar serving draft beer and wine, as well as a coffee bar — all to enhance the patron experience. The renovations were supported in part by Suffolk County’s Jump Smart program, which aids small businesses.

A TASTE OF ROTO: SHARING OUR FAVORITE RECIPE
As we prepare to open a new, larger location, we wanted to share a recipe with you that celebrates some of our favorite seasonal ingredients. This fall, we're highlighting bulgur wheat's warm, nutty flavors in a Mediterranean-inspired grain bowl, topped with herby labneh for a creamy finish. We look forward to welcoming you soon at 143 4th Avenue, Suite 101, in Bay Shore! Until then, enjoy this recipe and the flavors of the season! Cheers! Brock, Jack, and Team Roto
Roasted Vegetable and Grain Bowl with Herbed Labneh
(feeds 3-4)
INGREDIENTS Vegetables
• 1 delicata squash, cubed
• 2 sweet potatoes, cubed
• Olive oil
• Salt and pepper
• Nutmeg (for delicata squash)
• Sumac (for sweet potatoes) For the Grains
• 1 cup farro
• 1 cup bulgur wheat
• 5 cups water (3 cups for farro, 2 cups for bulgur)
• Delicata Squash: Toss the cubed delicata squash with salt, pepper, olive oil, and nutmeg. Spread on a baking sheet and roast until brown and fork-tender.
• Sweet Potatoes: Toss the cubed sweet potatoes with salt, pepper, olive oil, and sumac. Spread on a separate baking sheet and roast until brown and fork-tender.
3. Cook the Grains:
• In a saucepan, bring 3 cups of salted water to a boil. Add the farro and cook until all the water is absorbed. Set aside to cool.
• In another saucepan, bring 2 cups of salted water to a boil. Add the bulgur wheat and cook until all the water is absorbed. Set aside to cool.
4. Toast the Farro:
• In a sauté pan, heat olive oil and add the cooked farro with shallots. Toast until you hear popping noises, allowing it to get nice and crispy without moving the pan.
5. Make the Herbed Labneh:
• Scoop the Greek yogurt into a fine mesh strainer, add 1 tablespoon of sea salt, and place a bowl underneath to catch the liquid. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
• In a bowl, combine the drained yogurt, chopped herbs, garlic, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Fold together until well mixed.
6. Assembly:
• Spread the herbed labneh on the bottom of a dish.
• In a separate bowl, mix the warm grains with arugula, a drizzle of olive oil, and a few dashes of red wine vinegar. Place this mixture on top of the labneh.
• Layer the roasted sweet potatoes and delicata squash on top of the grain mixture.
• Garnish with pomegranate seeds and any remaining herbs.
THE ART OF SPATCHCOCKING: Your Secret to Juicy, Flavorful Poultry Every Time
This technique guarantees the juiciest, most flavorful chicken or turkey you've ever served. Ideal for busy weeknights or when you're aiming to impress guests, spatchcocking is the ultimate trick for perfectly roasted birds with crispy skin and tender, juicy meat. Plus, it’s a great option for Thanksgiving turkey, saving you valuable oven time while delivering unbeatable flavor.
What Is Spatchcocking?
Spatchcocking is a method of butterflying a bird by removing its backbone and flattening it out like an open book, allowing for faster and more even cooking. When you spatchcock a chicken (or turkey), the entire bird cooks evenly, resulting in golden, crispy skin and incredibly moist meat. Also, the bird’s flattened shape reduces roasting time, with a chicken ready in about an hour and a turkey done in less than 90 minutes. Toss veggies like potatoes and carrots on the same sheet pan, and you have a complete, easy meal with minimal cleanup. While it does shave time off meal prep, the real benefit is the taste — every bite is bursting with flavor.
How to Spatchcock
While the process may sound intimidating, it’s actually simple:
Prep the chicken
Remove any giblets and pat the bird dry. Let it rest at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
Remove the backbone
Place the chicken breast-side down and use kitchen shears to cut along both sides of the backbone. Remove it completely.
Flatten the bird
Turn the bird breast-side up and press down on the breastbone until it flattens out.
Season Generously
Rub butter, garlic, and fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme under and over the skin, or use your favorite spice rub seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
Roast with veggies
Place the chicken on a baking sheet with veggies like halved potatoes and carrots, tossed in olive oil and seasoning. Roast at 425°F for 60–70 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
Spatchcock for Thanksgiving
You can take your Thanksgiving turkey to the next level with the spatchcocking method. This technique not only saves time but also guarantees your turkey will be moist and flavorful, with crispy skin all over. Plus, it frees up precious oven space for all your favorite side dishes.
If you’re not comfortable spatchcocking a turkey yourself, don’t worry! Local butchers, like Frank and Maria’s in Bay Shore, can prepare the bird for you. Just ask them to spatchcock it when you place your order, and you’ll be set for the juiciest, crispiest turkey of your life.

Houseplant Happiness: Bringing the Outdoors In
TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR FAVORITE INDOOR PLANTS
As we head into fall, the days of enjoying our outdoor gardens may be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean the joy of greenery has to end. Houseplants bring nature into your home, creating a tranquil environment that nurtures both your space and spirit. With just a few seasonal care tips, your indoor plants will flourish, adding a vibrant touch to any room and making your home feel warm and inviting.
First, choose the right size pot when repotting or transplanting by opting for a pot that’s just one–two inches larger than the current one. Going too big can overwhelm your plant’s roots. Wait until you see roots peeking through the drainage holes before moving up in size. Ensure proper drainage by using pots with drainage holes, as plants left sitting in water are prone to root rot. If your favorite decorative pot lacks drainage, place your plant in a plastic pot with proper drainage that fits inside the decorative one. Simply remove the plastic pot to water, let it drain, and return it to the decorative pot.
Understanding your plant's watering needs is essential. Overwatering is a common mistake that can lead to root rot. Research each plant’s specific needs and allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again. To maximize light exposure during the shorter fall and winter days, place your plants near windows with indirect sunlight, or use grow lights if needed. Rotate plants occasionally so they receive even light exposure.
Indoor heating can dry out the air, so increase humidity by misting your plants regularly, grouping them together, or using a humidifier. Regular pruning keeps plants looking their best, and don’t forget to clean the leaves — dust buildup can block light absorption and hinder photosynthesis.
Not All Houseplants Are Created Equal!
Not every houseplant will thrive in the same conditions. Light, water, humidity, temperature, and maintenance levels vary widely among different plants. Before diving into plant parenthood, research each plant’s specific requirements and make sure you can commit to their care needs. Selecting plants that match your environment and lifestyle will help them thrive and keep your home feeling vibrant.
Recommended Houseplants for Beginners
Some resilient plants are perfect for beginners, as they require minimal care and can tolerate a range of conditions. Pothos is very forgiving and thrives in low light and with irregular watering. The ZZ plant can handle neglect and low light, making it ideal for beginners. Aloe Vera requires bright, indirect light and minimal watering, plus it has healing properties! Chinese Evergreen is great for low light and varying humidity and is tolerant of neglect. Philodendron thrives in indirect light and is adaptable to most environments. Finally, the Snake Plant is extremely hardy, thriving in low light and requiring very little water — perfect for forgetful plant parents!
Houseplant Benefits for More Happiness
Houseplants offer more than just decoration; they offer many qualities for a happier lifestyle. They are little air purifiers — filtering the air by removing toxins and releasing oxygen, improving the air quality in your home. Studies also suggest that being around plants and connecting with nature reduces stress levels, lowers blood pressure, and can improve your mood! Watering your plants or just admiring their foliage is like a therapy session, minus the hourly fee! Research also shows that having a houseplant in your work environment could boost productivity up to 15% by the simple fact of creating a more relaxing space. If you decide to take on plant parenthood, prepare to smile and be happy!

Bulbs to Plant Now for Spring Beauty
Planting bulbs in the fall ensures a vibrant and colorful spring garden. While daffodils and tulips are popular, consider trying something different this year with alliums or hyacinths. Both bulbs return reliably each year and don’t need to be dug up, making them a low-maintenance option.
Alliums
Few flowers can match the striking beauty and pest resistance of alliums. These bold, globe-shaped blooms add drama to any garden while naturally deterring deer, rabbits, and rodents. Ideal for small spaces, they bring height and structure without overwhelming your garden.
Hyacinths
For a low-growing alternative, hyacinths offer a burst of color and fragrance. These compact, fragrant flowers bloom early in the season and thrive in small spaces or borders.
Whether you opt for alliums' towering elegance or hyacinths' sweet scent, both will add something special to your spring garden.
Alliums, like ‘Globemaster’ and ‘Drumstick,’ naturalize and expand with each season.
add a burst of color and contrast beautifully with yellow tulips or daffodils.
