THE LIST MAGAZINE 917.559.7821

Welcome to warmer weather, sunny skies, and well wishes! For the past decade, with the exception of last year, our May issue has been dedicated to celebrating women. This year is even more special to celebrate all women. I am proud to be a woman; proud to be part of all women, of all ages and all cultures. Regardless of our differences, we are all truly the same in so many ways. Women are strong; we are courageous; we are passionate; we love intensely. Whatever it takes…we do what needs to be done and carry on. A year ago, as the pandemic set in and we all relegated inside whatever four walls we call home, it gave us the time to consider and realize what the most important things are to us. We learned more than ever that our hearts are where our home is. With that in mind, inside this issue you’ll find wonderful ways to freshen up and organize your home as we shine the spotlight on businesses that are all about creating comfort, function, and beauty in every area of your house, both indoors and out. This time of year is filled with celebrations. Congratulations to all the graduates, and to each of you celebrating milestones and the joys of life. Celebrations may be reimagined and restyled this year, but they still bring us great joy. Right on cue with the arrival of warmer weather, many of our local restaurants now offer al fresco dining, perfect for celebrating outdoors. Check out our Dining Guide for great places to host an event or just enjoy a meal. In this issue we hope to inspire you to celebrate; celebrate your home, your loved ones and yourself. As it does in fact take a village, wishing a very Happy Mother’s Day to all women.

SPOTLIGHT

pedestal, this Rolls-Royce of meat slicers is not only a spectacular piece, it will easily produce the thinnest slices of prosciutto with ease. The specialty provisions are all imported or from local crafters. Gustiamo’s well known anchovy colatura and Pianogrillo’s powerful tomato concentrate, Estratto di Pomodori, both with cult-like followings, are personal favorites of Donna and her team. Passionate about Extra Virgin Olive Oils, Donna studied to become an olive oil sommelier (yes, there actually is such a thing!). She takes great care in choosing and importing extremely good quality EVOOs from Italy, Spain, France, Greece and California.

The Babylon Mercantile Food fanatics and cooking enthusiasts start your engines… Babylon Village has a new destination location that is truly a kitchen wonderland. It’s a one-stop-shop for all-things-culinary. Thoughtfully developed for both the home cook and professional chef alike, The Babylon Mercantile brilliantly combines a uniquely stocked retail store with an inhouse Cookshop. Since opening last fall, the Mercantile has distinguished itself not only as a specialty retailer, but also as a rather impressive culinary institute that everybody is invited to attend. The Mercantile’s retail store is an intriguing emporium of kitchenwares and provisions, many which are locally sourced or internationally imported. Shelves are stocked with a wide variety of quality items, including many extraordinary ones that are not easily found, all carefully curated by Donna Sesto, owner of the Mercantile, and her team. A slightly giddy, don’t-know-where-to-lookfirst-feeling sets in upon entering the store, but the SMEG appliance display is the instant eye-catcher. Designed by Dolce & Gabbana, these premium Italian appliances, distinct and colorful, look like they belong in a modern art museum. The Berkel meat slicer is another showpiece that commands immediate attention. Perched atop its nearly 3 foot

Everything in the Mercantile is special, but not everything is expensive; there are items at every price point. Lining the walls is an extensive selection of both everyday and professional grade cookware, including lines from Smithey Cast Iron and Hestan Cue, giant braising pans, and cast iron pans that range from $30 to $200. Breville Countertop Pizzaiolo Ovens, Staub Dutch Ovens, Ankarsrum mixers, and playful pans and bakeware from Nordic Ware are all team-favorites carried in the store. Emphasizing the importance of good knives, they stock an impressive selection of premium cutlery, including hand-crafted lines imported from Japan, Germany, France and Italy. You’ll find collections of Sicilian and Portuguese ceramics, festive table décor, bar accessories, decorative hand towels and wonderful gift items; as well as the essentials: sheet pans, hand-held utensils, and even measuring cups, not only plentiful but affordable. From basic necessities and highend brands, to fun finds and some fantastically uncommon products, there really is a little bit of everything inside the Mercantile. Located behind the store through massive glass doors is The Cookshop, the culinary classroom and heart & soul

“Cooking is all about people. Food is maybe the only universal thing that really has the power to bring everyone together. No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people are passionate about food." - Donna Sesto, Founder, The Babylon Mercantile

of the Mercantile. A bright and sunny space with French doors that open to the back patio, it feels familiar; like a comfortable kitchen you want to sit down in. Intentionally designed to feel inviting to new cooks as well as seasoned chefs, it features both residential and industrial appliances for class attendees to cook and learn on. Chefs hailing from prestigious culinary schools (Johnson & Wales, Institute of Culinary Education (ICE), and the Culinary Institute of America (The CIA), to be specific) instruct the classes, which are carefully planned with menus that appeal to everybody. Whether you have professional experience, or don’t know a butter knife from a paring knife, all are invited and warmly welcomed to the classes at the Cookshop. “We are focused on making learning fun,” said Donna, “but always incorporating skills and techniques into each class. The Cookshop is a place where people can come to learn, but also a place where

people can come to share their knowledge. We are always interested in learning from other food enthusiasts.” As a precaution to ensure everyone’s safety, classes at the Cookshop had temporarily been suspended, but a wide variety of classes and workshops have been scheduled for spring, including Steak Night, Pizza Making, Pasta Making, Tarts, Cookies, Kids Classes (!) and even a 2-3 day Bootcamp, which is an introduction to culinary skills and various cooking methods. Stay tuned to their website for updates and registration information. Specialty classes and events pop-up regularly and can also be found on their website. Preparing and enjoying delicious recipes is only part of the fun of attending a class at the Cookshop… professional skills, chef’s secrets, tips and tricks of the trade are all valuable tools you get to take home and use forever.

Oh, and listen up, fellas…outdoor classes hosted on The Patio are scheduled to begin this summer. These classes will be centered on outdoor cooking techniques using Evo grills and smokers, as well as Summerset pizza ovens, all of which can be purchased at the Mercantile. An upstairs addition, The Parlor, is also in the works. Imported linens, ceramics, and tabletop settings and décor will be featured here. Donna’s prior career as an executive had her traveling the globe, which explains her love of international goods and provisions. The Babylon Mercantile is the type of store people will drive the distance for. Lucky for us, Donna Sesto chose to plant her roots in Babylon Village. The Babylon Mercantile is a wonderful establishment for our south shore communities to engage with and enjoy. We can’t wait to see what happens next!

ORIGIN OF ERA

Since many of our beautiful readers are over forty, we asked Renee Goldfarb, stylist and owner of Origin of Era Boutique in Bay Shore, for some expert advice about how to look sophisticated, stylish and fun.

Fashions Fade, Style is Eternal - Yves Saint Laurent

FASHION Q&A SESSION WITH RENEE GOLDFARB Some people say age doesn’t matter with fashion trends, true or false? This is a loaded statement in terms of fashion, especially when you are not a teenager. There's a big difference between trendy (something that's hyped up at the moment) and on trend (fashion forward and stylish). As women of a particular age, we definitely want to be considered on trend, not trendy. There are specific trends that we remember, but we remember the way we USED to wear them. While we may still love that look, it might not wear the same way on ourselves now as it originally did. Stay on trend with classic pieces. I love the look of a pull-on combat boot (yup, they’re a classic!) with a floral midi dress. This mixes the masculine into the feminine, and also gives the effect of putting yourself together without "trying".

There's a big difference between trendy (something that's hyped up at the moment) and on trend (fashion forward and stylish). As women of a particular age, we definitely want to be considered on trend, not trendy.

the 1970's, which in turn inspires today’s most relevant looks. We see it in movies, fashion, and street style. If you love a good bell bottom, then wear it, but work it into more modern silhouettes to keep the balance. What are some major fashion mistakes women of a particular age should avoid? I hate the word "mistake"; what works for some women and makes them feel good is something we should celebrate. When talking fashion, I think it’s important to stay forward and not focus on all the trends all at once. You never want to feel like you're in "costume". There's so many great moments in fashion right now that work for women our age! Boiler suits, high waisted trousers, and loose leg culottes for example. Can you share some top style-secrets and tips for women over 40? When we reach our 30's, we know what works for us individually. Be sure you are wearing your clothing, and the clothing isn’t wearing you. Otherwise, you’re just going to feel self-conscious. If you love something but it needs a hem or dart to make it better, then visit your local seamstress and make it your own. If it's something that may not be fixable, then just pass.

How can a 40+ woman can wear the trends vs. how a 20+ woman would wear them? A girl in her 20's can wear trends however she wants! The younger generation can grab a trend and run with it; we don't wear it the same way, but take inspiration from it and work it into our wardrobe in an understated way. Oversized palazzo pants with a streamlined bodysuit, or a cottage country dress with a just below-the-knee hemline instantly becomes wearable. If you wore the trend once, you can’t wear it again, true or false? This is something we just can't pay attention to. We know history repeats, even in fashion. The 1930's inspired

What are some basic pieces we should have in our wardrobe? • A good pair of quality denim jeans. The right pair will compliment you and last a long time. • A pair of white sneakers. You can wear these with anything and everything you own. • A kaftan. You will live in this all summer…wear it to the beach, dinner, out shopping, anywhere. • A great pair of ankle boots. Ankle boots are season-less, wear them with anything!

• A really good Rancher or Fedora Hat. Straw or grosgrain is great, but I love a wool felt, it keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Tie scarves around the base to change it up.

Celebrating Women Some of our Favorite Wise Words for Women to Live By: Celebrating another woman's triumphs or success will never take away from your shine or glory. If anything, it'll add to it and create more light. Your past does not define your present. What am I growing in my emotional garden and what am I weeding out? Change may be difficult, but sometimes the only way to grow is to let go of things, gracefully accept the uncomfortable lessons, and learn from them all. Every age has its advantages and its challenges. Accept where you are now, but know it is temporary.

I've just decided to accept the aging process and be as happy and healthy as I can for as long as I have the privilege of being here. It’s okay at times to not be okay. Allowing yourself not to feel ok involves accepting all feelings, thoughts, or sensations, and sitting with them until they pass. If you try to avoid, suppress, or ignore them, they will only grow stronger and leave you overwhelmed and believing that you cannot cope.

Wise Words

from Local Ladies

For our Celebrate Women issue, we asked local women who inspire us to share some personal words of wisdom.

2020 was the most powerful teacher in my 52 years of living. She showed me through her tumultuous tests, twists and turns that my happiness is 100% tied to my ability to be grateful. This shift in mindset did not happen overnight. At the beginning of the pandemic, I "white knuckled" what I could not change or control; and this left me feeling unhappy, anxious, and overwhelmed. I knew that if I wanted to change I need to focus on 2 things: my thoughts and actions. So began my active practice of gratitude. This process helped move me away from loss and want, and towards abundance and joy. Now, I begin my day with what I call my “AM Groove”, a routine I create that anchors my day with intention and positivity. This simple routine improves my mood, helps me deal with adversity, and allows me to see that what I have right now is enough. Funny thing about gratitude… the more you practice, the more you find to be grateful for.

Diane Urso, Brightwaters,

LMSW/Coach, Wife, Mom, Dog Mom, Gratitude Giver!

In life we do things; some we wish we had never done, some we wish we could replay a million times over. But they all make us who we are, and in the end, they shape every detail about us. If we were to reverse any of them, we wouldn’t be the person that we are. So just live. Make mistakes, make wonderful memories, but never second guess who you are, where you have been, and most importantly, where it is that you are going. Take every experience, good and bad, and let them shape you. Have no regrets. Be kind. Treat others with respect. Don’t be a jerk....learn from your mistakes, apologize if warranted, and let it go. Live each and every day to its fullest. Love and prayers to you all, today and every day.

Patricia Blair, East Islip,

Attorney, Volunteer, Mother to John (18) and Emily(17), Married to the Incredible Doug nearly 28 years

Don’t ever discount your faith. Put time and effort into it, like everything else in your life that you deem valuable. Make time for prayer and meditation. Do it every day, in good times and in bad. Like any relationship or goal, the more you put into it, the more you will see it flourish. Learn to trust and give gratitude. Ask, and in time, you will receive.

Joanne Lifavi, West Islip, Mom, Girlfriend, Publisher, Seeker of Positivity

I have learned that today is the moment I am in. I hope for tomorrow… but it is not guaranteed. I live ‘24 hours’; chasing health, strength, and moments of joy. That is it. 16 years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It is a frustrating, lifelong diagnosis that steals your plans, your eyesight, your ability to function, to walk, think, or speak clearly. MS has pressed PAUSE many times in my life over the past 16 years. Learning to embrace an “MS pause” while focusing on self-care and faith makes it tolerable. When the global pandemic pressed PAUSE on our daily lives, the fast-forward days of schedules and plans paused, and for many it was unimaginable; beyond our control with times of fear, loss, and hopelessness. As months passed, adopting the mindset of ‘24 hours’ made it bearable for my family. As life begins to return, honor yourself for where you have been, and use your next 24 hours to live your life to the fullest!

Angie G.,

Mom, Wife, Sunrise Chaser, MS Warrior, Fitness Specialist

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why am I here?” We are all, at some point, internally driven to question our Soul Purpose, to seek clarification on a deeper sense of meaning, and to identify a personal mission; one that will enable us to leave behind a legacy we will ultimately feel proud to have gifted others and the world. Through my own personal journey and meditations, here’s what I’ve learned: we all share the very same Soul Purpose. It’s to shed the many layers of external influence; shed the ideas and messages from parents, teachers, friends, and partners about who we are and what we’re capable of, so that we might shine our unique, pure light in the world. That is all. If you’ve done any amount of personal development work, you’ll recognize that this is simple in concept, but difficult in execution. In a world that prioritizes business and doing, we can access life-changing answers and achieve illuminating clarity by instead adopting an orientation toward being. Slow down and invite stillness in whatever form suits you. Once there, you will undoubtedly find peace, fulfillment, and purpose.

Look! Out in the back! It’s a shed! It’s an office! Wait, it’s a shedquarters! As working from home turns into a semipermanent situation for many, the search is on for private workspace. Some people have opted to take over a bedroom or basement to set up their new home office. But others are heading to the backyard. These backyard “shedquarters” are small outbuildings that are becoming popular as home office spaces or workshops. NEWLY EXPANDED SHOWROOM AND DESIGN CENTER. Expert Service, Style, and Quality, Whether You’re Remodeling One Room, or Transforming Your Entire Home After enjoying 2 years of success at their new location, Ted Olander, head designer/ co-owner of Zimmerman’s Furniture, felt the need for more space. Set adjacent to the Textile Mill End Shop in East Islip, their newly expanded showroom now occupies the entire 100-year-old building. “We couldn’t be prouder about how the renovation of this landmark space turned out,” said Ted, “and we can’t wait to share it with all of our customers. With the vast amount of floor space we gained, we are able to display so much more. Now we have the benefit of being able to show our customers the wide variety of furniture

and accessories we carry, as well as the many options available. There is access to hundreds of fabrics and countless new ideas right here in our store. ” As interior designers, Ted explained how he and his staff can assist clients with everything from selecting and customizing a sofa, to accessorizing, and even a largescale room design. “Bring in photos of your home, measurements you have of the space, pictures that inspire and speak to you, or simply a style of furniture you are looking for, and we’ll handle the rest. If you don’t

have an exact idea on what you are in the market for, then simply stop by to walk around the new showroom for ideas of what is new and trending today. You’ll find various furniture groupings, beautifully accessorized with rugs and accent pieces. It’s a great way to see how everything works together.” “Layering different textures, fabrics, colors, and patterns has become very popular this year. patterned accents and custom pillows. Artwork that suits your own style and is to scale and proportion to your space can really influence a room’s overall look. High quality, stylish, furniture-based gaming tables have risen in popularity as well since the onset of the pandemic.” The global pandemic has certainly caused significant shifts in lifestyle, and Dorothy’s words, “There’s no place like home” have never rung more true. With limited travel and entertainment options, and increased time spent at home, people are choosing to allocate the money that they would have spent on vacations towards home improvement. Some rooms may now have a different purpose than they did prepandemic and require remodeling; some

rooms may just need updating and better lighting. Most importantly, these spaces need to be functional and comfortable to help maintain a happy home. “We were closed for a few months due to COVID, then conducted business by appointment only. After spending so much time in their homes, people were desperate to remodel, or freshen up a room, and wanted design help along the way. We could barely keep up with demand,” Ted explained. “With no big family trips taken last year, the income people saved seems to be going directly into making their homes brighter, fresher, and better than ever.”

MUST KNOW

Customers frequently come in to purchase a new sectional or two accent chairs, and end up deciding to redo an entire room… or sometimes their entire home. It’s no secret that projects have a much longer lead time than they did pre-pandemic, and this is something to be mindful of. Even if you are ‘on the fence’ about planning to update, Ted suggests coming in today. Not tomorrow; today. Secure your place in line, start planning your projects now to make your home or office more comfortable and beautiful sooner than later.

HOME DECOR

MUST KNOW

Spring Cleaning: Get Organized Less is more…think ‘less visual clutter’ when it comes to decorating. Organize your space so you can put items away. Display just enough decor to be pretty, but not overdone. Clutter-free spaces are also easier to keep clean. Here are some easy and decorative solutions we hope will inspire you! BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Sliding doors can create space and add personality to any room. Whether you prefer traditional wood barn doors, French doors, wood panels, rustic repurposed wood, or an ultra-modern industrial look, these doors are as stylish as they are functional, and can be personalized with paint or stain, molding, and decorative knobs, handles, and hardware. These hand-crafted rustic farmhouse doors conceal a bathroom linen closet, but a home office is another perfect space for sliding doors. Dualpurposed, they can hide a messy desk and also provide a quiet working environment. With a little creativity, these doors can say “off to work” on one side and “welcome home” on the other.

OPEN SHELVING

Popular in modern farmhouse kitchens, open shelves are a great way to showcase your pretty kitchen accessories, or be used to keep everyday essentials right at your fingertips.

BEAUTIFUL BUILT-INS

Organize your mudroom, entryway, or playroom with built-in shelves and cubbies. Set decorative coat hooks on woodstained or clean white wainscoting for a classic look. They are also perfect for pantries, and even closets. For high profile rooms, consider custom millwork to elevate the style factor.

Then I drew up a layout that worked best for my space. Once that was decided, we laid out the cabinetry and surfaces. I chose to extend the upper cabinets to the ceiling to maximize storage. We decided to paint the upper cabinetry white, but incorporated royal blue on the bottom. We also added 2 pull-out hampers for darks and whites. I also think it's a great idea to include an extra beverage center in the laundry/ mudroom so kids can grab-and-go. Don’t overlook design details; we addressed the importance of functionality, but aesthetics are equally important, so make your space beautiful and you’ll spend more time there! - Mary Middlemiss, Twice as Nice Interiors

Coping with anxiety during stressful times:

Incorporating acupuncture as part of an integrative health care plan for well being. BY ANTHONY CERABINO B.M.,LMT,M.S.,L.AC Primarily used for pain relief, acupuncture, a drug-free treatment, can also be effective at treating a wide range of other conditions… including anxiety.

helpful for easing chronic, long term symptoms. We have been seeing patients for symptoms of fatigue, tinnitus, neuropathy, inflammation, muscle aches and pain.

Despite the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, times are still stressful and anxiety is something many people are wrestling with on a daily basis. In attempt to shed some light on this darkness, we spoke with Anthony Cerabino, owner of Healthcare Wellness Center, for some expert advice regarding acupuncture as a treatment for stress and anxiety disorders.

In layman’s terms, how does acupuncture help maintain health and wellbeing? Acupuncture is a great treatment to support the immune system by increasing and balancing the electromagnetic energy flow in the body. If there is a lack of energy (a deficiency) in the targeted area, it will free it up and direct it there; and conversely, if there is too much energy (an excess) stuck in an area, it will release it.

Can you explain for us how acupuncture treats stress and anxiety? Acupuncture can reset the nervous system by initiating the release of endorphins which are the pre-cursor molecules for serotonin and melatonin. It is the feeling you get when you have “runner’s high”. Acupuncture helps the body switch from a sympathetic response (fight or flight) to a parasympathetic response (rest and digest). Can acupuncture for anxiety/stress disorders be used as an alternative treatment, or in conjunction with other treatments, such as psychotherapy or medication? Acupuncture can be used as an adjunct treatment. Yes, it would be great to be off medication in the long run. Herbal medicine is also a viable alternative without side effects. Should acupuncture be considered as a form of treatment to help for the COVID-19 virus? It’s not common to use acupuncture in the acute phase, but more

full-service pharmacy

Prescriptions in minutes, not hours!

What should we expect to feel during and after an acupuncture treatment? Acupuncture treatments are extremely relaxing. After the treatment, you will feel revitalized/energized and/or centered, focused and grounded...as if a weight has been taken off your shoulders. How long does it take for Acupuncture to work? Immediate results may occur if you are trying to relieve tight muscles. Chronic conditions tend to take longer as the body repairs itself over time. How will someone know if the acupuncture treatments are working? Simply, if they are not feeling the pain that originally brought them into the office to begin with, it’s working.

DESIGN SHOWCASE

Michael Anthony Design Build Michael Maffettone has been dedicated to building distinct homes of superior craftsmanship since he started swinging a hammer nearly two decades ago. Well-known for the comprehensive full-service he provides, from the imaginative stage to the concluding phase of accessorizing and finishing fixtures, Maffettone’s clients seek him out to build dream homes uniquely tailored to accommodate their lifestyle. Exquisitely designed and constructed, Maffettone’s most recent builds mirror a seamless marriage of aesthetics and function; both mandatory as required by his high standards. Like all of his designs, classic elements have been gracefully woven into these one-of-a-kind homes. Modern farmhouse in style, the interiors are finished with high ceilings, multiple fireplaces, wide plank wood floors, modern trim, and mixed metal hardware, all characteristic of his signature style. Luxuriously appointed with every amenity imaginable, many of these residences include custom designed gourmet kitchens, gym areas, bar & lounge areas, home office spaces, and “bonus” rooms that can be fashioned into whatever the homeowner can dream up. “This is by far is one of my personal favorite builds of 2020,” said Mike, “The features in this residence are endless.” Upon entering this 4,200 sq. ft. home, you’re greeted by a two story foyer. Custom wrought iron handrails line the stairs, complementing the wide-plank white oak flooring, giving the entry a classically modern feel, a style Maffettone has termed “transitional”, which is beautifully continued throughout the entire house. The large open-concept first floor includes a steel surround vertical gas fireplace, a sunken family room, a separate wet bar area, and a full size office space. Upstairs, the master suite and additional 3 bedrooms all have vaulted ceilings, and there is even a “bonus room” which features a gym area, sauna, and lounge area with an amazing sound system. Sleek and elegant, the 9 ft. marble island in this sun-lit gourmet kitchen is the showstopper. The custom cabinets and open shelving deliver authentic farmhouse style, beauty, and an abundance of storage. All of the 3 baths have custom vanities and imported tile. The luxuriously oversized showers contribute to their light, bright and airy feel.

PRINCIPAL, MICHAEL ANTHONY DESIGN BUILD

MICHAEL ANTHONY DESIGN BUILD

This 5 bedroom, 4,500 sq. ft. Modern Farmhouse is well-suited for a large family with high-end preferences. The entry of this home also opens to a grand 2 story foyer; its stairs lined with white oak handrails crafted to match the wide-plank white oak flooring. The kitchen, as well as the 5 baths, were all custom built with extraordinary features that make this home unique. The second floor is equally impressive, and includes a master suite with full entryway sitting area, his & hers walkin closets, and a huge 18’x15’ master bathroom with his & hers sides. The large family room blends into the custom kitchen, which comes fully equipped with Wolf gourmet appliances and a Sub-Zero built-in fridge/ freezer combo. Maffettone’s transitional style is particularly evident in the two wood burning fireplaces, a tasteful combination of rustic wood and refined marble, which make gorgeous accents to both the family and living rooms. The living room also has one of our favorite features: perfect for entertaining, it was designed with a built-in bar nook, fully outfitted with a wine fridge and sink. These warm spring days make the 250 sq. ft. screened in porch off the rear of the house another great spot for entertaining.
