IT'S WHERE YOU WANT TO BE
Nicky's on the Bay
by Stephanie Racanelli
Many of us are familiar with Nicky’s On the Bay as a summer destination restaurant and a local favorite. Now the new reconstructed Nicky’s on the Bay is opened and it is even more fantastic! This once seasonal restaurant will now be open most of the year for us to enjoy, closing only for two months in January and February. photography by vicki jauron
Every restaurant has a person at the helm, a leader of the crew, who began a journey to realize a personal dream. The humble “Captain” of Nicky’s On the Bay is Nick Parini. Nick’s journey began twentyfive years ago when he took over the small clam bar in Bay Shore by the Fire Island ferry dock; this small “seafood shack” is Nicky’s Clam bar. Eleven years ago, his bid was accepted on his present site and Nicky’s On the Bay was born. It started as an “islanddining” type eatery with outdoor tables under awnings and a small adjoining restaurant infrastructure, surrounded by the most beautiful
water views. The original place was great, but you could imagine being where the Watchogue Creek meets the Great South Bay, enjoying an ice cold beer and a seafood dinner, and suddenly the winds and dark clouds envelope you. Locals know the scenario well, but no one likes having to run from a delicious meal to get to safety indoors! Nicky knew he had a fantastic place for people to enjoy a drink, a meal, and the amazing view. It was a place for him to realize his dream: To provide people with beautiful scenery, great food and excellent service.” He was well aware that outdoor dining is limited to the warmest months-typically from the end of April to Columbus Day - and business suffers during inclement weather. Realizing his dreams, he made dining with the best view on the south shore even better! As a solution, the restaurant was reconstructed and expanded to allow him to stay open from March till the end of December and accommodate more people. Special structures were installed to provide protection from the elements while diners sit on the waterfront, no matter what the weatherman predicts! THE LIST: Tell us about the recent changes to the restaurant? NICK: “We were under construction for the most part of the winter. We now have expanded indoor and outdoor dining, with a retractable
roof and doors. They are the first of their kind on Long Island and the largest also. They work like the retractable ceilings in the large stadiums. If it’s a beautiful day, we can open up the roof and doors or close them to keep out rain and winds. As an example, it may be a beautiful day but the winds may be blowing a little hard out of the west. Now, I can close off one side of the restaurant to accommodate this unexpected change in weather. If it rains, I can close the ceiling! Our patrons are now able to dine indoors while enjoying a sunset, a moonrise, or a lightning storm. “ We have extended our downstairs bar and also added an upper deck with a 360 degree panoramic view of the Great South Bay. There simply is no bad view in the entire place!
"Realizing his dreams, he made dining with the best view on the south shore even better!" During this interview, I gave in to the inherent urge that happens whenever I walk into Nicky’s - I had to have a bowl of steamers. Nicky’s On the Bay is the place for the strange looking clam we LongIslanders love to eat. The generous portions of steaming clams and the ubiquitous bowls of hot broth and melted butter call to me when I take in the amazing view that Nicky’s has to offer.

Other very popular items are the parmesan encrusted halibut and the seafood tower. The halibut is moist and juicy with just the right seasoning to enhance the flavor of the fish and the seafood tower allows one to enjoy a variety of fresh fish choices all at once. Although Nicky’s makes a great steak or burger, the fresh fish and homemade soups are always satisfying choices. THE LIST: Tell us about your seafood; what sets you apart from the rest? NICK: “We have our own “digger” who provides me with the freshest clams, steamers and oysters. He dives for our oysters from the deep waters of the north shore of Long Island and digs our steamers and clams, delivering them from the bay right to the refrigerators in the restaurant. If he cannot meet the demand, he will buy from the other private “diggers” on the beach to avoid having to go to market for our shellfish. That way, the freshness is ensured. If you buy from a market, you run the risk of the product being a few days old. I don’t want to sell that to my customers. Our shrimp are also popular and are jumbo in size. We only sell U10 size shrimp, meaning less than10 shrimp make up a pound. Their size and freshness make the fried shrimp a very satisfying and popular choice on our menu. They are authentically “jumbo”

shrimp, not U21-25’s like many restaurants use. THE LIST: Now that you are open from March through December, What are some of your plans for Nicky’s on the Bay? NICK: We plan on adding special nights at the bar that coincide with the particular sport of the season, or possibly Karaoke night, or acoustic music. We now are catering for private parties on our premises, accommodating
from 30 to 100 people. I’m also very excited to install a floating dock this coming spring 2016. It will have 10 slips and will be able to accommodate boats up to 50 feet in length.

9 College Alternatives for the Constructive Student While getting away from home and living on your own gives your children the exciting feeling of independence, they also get to experience doing laundry, feeding oneself, and the responsibility of saving time, and saving money for what once was a disposable income. So when speakers for music, a coffee maker, or eating something other than dining hall food is requested of their wallet, you might want to pass on these awesome life makeshifts instead!
1. Put your phone into a glass cup or red solo cup while playing music for amplified sound. This is also useful for heavy sleepers who need an extra loud alarm to get them out of bed.

An exclusive collection of clothing, jewelry and accessories that say how much you love where you live. Only at Willy Nilly Trading.
2. No coffee makers allowed in dorms? Take your coffee grounds, put them into a coffee filter and tie off the bag. You’ve created a “coffee” tea bag. Dip the bag into hot water for a cup of delicious coffee. 3. If you do have a coffee maker, you can use it to cook up pasta! Put water into the carafe, heat it up and throw some pasta in. 4. If laptops are allowed in class, record lectures with programs such as Audacity to save time studying and always have the notes right. 5. Eggs at the dining hall taste like cardboard? Spray a microwavable mug with nonstick cooking spray, crack two eggs into the mug. After scrambling the eggs, add some shredded cheese if you wish, and a splash of milk. Place in microwave for 45 seconds, take out and stir. Heat for another 45 second, then stir again to make sure it’s cooked thoroughly. 6. When trying to decorate your dormitory walls without damaging them, try using washi tape to hang up posters. This tape is cheap with strong adhesive and an array of patterns to frame posters. Washi tape also comes off extremely easy leaving no residue. 7. For long essays that require extended laptop use which cause your laptop to heat up, cool it down by placing it on top of a cardboard coffee holder or an empty carton of eggs. 8. Take a picture of your schedule and make it the lock screen on your smartphone for the first week of school for easy access. 9. Does your dorm room smell bad. Tape a dryer sheet over the AC unit or a fan and turn it on.

AN AT TITUDE OF GR ATITUDE
an Attitude of Gratitude by Patricia Thomas
In the blink of an eye summer is gone. I’d like to think I was able to enjoy the beautiful weather, the get-togethers with family and friends, the tastes of the fruits and vegetables that are only harvested in the summer months, and the relaxation of a vacation week here and there. Sometimes even an extended weekend seems like a vacation if you’re able. In retrospect, I lived in the moment and relished each day away from the hectic work-a-day schedule. It is not easy to appreciate each season, each month or even each day fully, but if you can start to recognize times in your life as important occasions, significant instances, your appreciation turns into gratitude. I was in the produce department of a supermarket one late afternoon a few weeks ago. I had been watching a young mother and her two young children interact and for a minute it brought me back twenty something
years ago when my children were that age. Remembering like it was yesterday, pushing the limits with my kids after a full day and experiencing the outbursts when they wanted to make their point that they were done. I smiled at the young mom and exchanged a few words of encouragement as she handled the squeals from her three year old quite well. I was able to stay home with my children until my youngest started kindergarten. I loved being home with them. The days are long with little ones indeed, but the years go by quickly. I cannot say truthfully that every day was a happy experience for me or my children, but the good days always outweighed the bad days. Every stage of raising children have pros and cons and often you want to rush the not so easy times away. Just like those summer nights when the breeze is gentle, the sounds of the
crickets are inviting and the air smells sweet, we need to relax and enjoy all the good things. My children’s teenage years kept me on my toes, but it also made me think back to my own teenage years (how did my mother do it)? I was sympathetic to my kids’ moodiness, their hormones, and their awkwardness. I kept a sense of humor when they reached the point of thinking I was a complete idiot. Each stage in their development helped me mature as a person and mother, as much as it matured them. I tried to make every minute count as much as possible. Even now, as young adults, they’ve made me grateful for everything that came before. The way they treat each other as well as other people, with respect and compassion, is amazing for me to watch. Keep that attitude of gratitude and appreciate where you are right now and every step along the way.
Eventually all the pieces fall into place. Untl then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moment and know that everything happens for a reason.

C O C K TA I L O F T H E S E A S O N
The Martini. However, the recipe for this classic has certainly changed as far as the public is concerned. Originally this cocktail contained Vermouth from France, Gin from England and was stirred over ice before being strained into a coupe glass. Today, in most bars around the world, the Martini is straight vodka, "shaken really cold" and poured into a V-shaped glass with floating ice chips. However refreshing and enjoyable you think cold vodka in a glass is, I can assure you the original martini recipe is something to be enjoyed and is truly amazing. The first ingredient is Vermouth, which, along with Sherry, is currently one of the hottest items on the market. Technically speaking Vermouth is an
aromatized wine, a type of fortified wine flavored with various botanicals (roots, barks, flowers, seeds, herbs, spices). There is dry vermouth, originally created in France, sweet vermouth originally created in Italy, and other variations such as Ambre vermouth and Bianco vermouth. Vermouth adds all sorts of aromatic notes as well as creaminess to the body of the martini and should not be ignored in the recipe. Gin comes from everywhere in the world now, with all sorts of different styles and flavor components. But Gin brings so much more to the table than vodka to the martini. Vodka is a neutral grain spirit, while gin, also a neutral grain spirit, is made by adding botanicals like juniper,

angelica, coriander, licorice, etc. Gin and vermouth work really well together and complement one another, kind of like peanut butter and jelly. There is a reason that the Martini has been the most famous cocktail since the later 1880's, it’s a perfect balance of ingredients. Shaken or stirred? Thank you so much Mr. Bond. The rule of thumb, any cocktail that contains just spirits, should be stirred. Stirring a drink allows it to get just as cold as a shaken drink but let's the cocktail maintain its creamy velvety mouthfeel. Shaking a drink does make it cold very quickly, but it also adds oxygen to the cocktail creating a small amount of effervescence, as well as tiny chips of ice on top. This is not
how a martini should feel when it hits your mouth. It should be silky and smooth, not rough with ice chips. Oliver Twist Your call. (Wink wink). Both work well. Olives also pair well with wine (vermouth) and gin, so it is the classic pairing, but a lemon twist can add a citrus characteristic that is ultra-refreshing and does tend to smooth out the bite from the gin a touch. Personally, my favorite martini is an Astoria Bianco, which is a variation of the Astoria cocktail created at the Old Waldorf Astoria hotel, NYC (1951). Give it try with some items from a raw bar, especially oysters. You might think you've died and gone to heaven. Cheers!

MUST KNOW
B E A U T Y P I C KS
BEAUTY, LASHES & BROWS OH MY! The List likes Little Lash Boutique, to get beautiful, thick, long lashes or to fix those sparse brows. After reading reviews online and hearing good things on the street I decided to pop in and visit the Little Lash Boutique and see for myself what this buzz was all about. Needless to say I was impressed and made an appointment to have some extensions put on my own brows. LLB is celebrating their 2nd anniversary in Babylon, and have built themselves a great reputation. Owner and lash Specialist Joanne Donnelly says “our extension technique is the secret to our success” that keeps their list of loyal and regular customers growing. I asked them some questions many of us have about this specialty procedure.
ENHANCING THE LASHES THE LIST: Do eyelash extensions ruin the natural eyelashes? LLB: When individual eyelash extensions are applied correctly your natural eyelashes will not be ruined. The eyelash extensions adhesive should not have added formaldehyde, and should truly be "individual eyelash extensions." THE LIST: What are truly individual eyelash extensions? LLB: Individual eyelashes are one single strand of either acrylic, silk, or mink fur. A safe but strong adhesive is used to apply the individual extension to one single natural eyelash. The individual eyelash extensions do not come off at the end of the night like strip and cluster lashes do. THE LIST: Why do I hear that cluster eyelashes are so bad for you? LLB: Every day the human eye should shed about 3-5 natural lashes in no particular order. When the lashes shed, the cluster is still attached to the not-ready-to-shed lashes. Inevitably, the weight of the cluster and glue pulls and pulls until it yanks out a bunch of natural lashes. This is when you hear of people going bald, being uncomfortable, and getting infections. With individual eyelash extensions, one artificial lash is being applied to one natural eyelash. When the natural lash is ready to shed, it does so with the one single extension still attached. Your eyelashes are still allowed to be eyelashes, uninterrupted.
ENHANCING THE BROWS THE LIST: What can I do to enhance my eyebrows not necessarily eyebrow extensions? LLB: Brows are important. We strive to work with what the client has first. First proper shapeup of the natural eyebrow and then a applying on a henna-based tint will enhance your eyebrow. Many of the times, the tint and proper shaping is all you need.
THE ART OF INDIVIDUAL EYELASH AND E Y E B R O W E X T E N S I O N S I S O U R S P E C I A LT Y
You can have thicker lashes and brows without damage or pain.
THE LIST: What is an eyebrow extension and how is it done? LLB: Eyebrow extensions are individual faux hairs that look like eyebrow hairs. Each little strand is picked up by tweezers dipped in a flexible, clear, and hypoallergenic adhesive (similar to medical grade wound closure glue) and carefully glued next to the root of one of your existing brow hairs. THE LIST: How much does it cost? LLB: The treatment can vary which effects how much it would cost. We can fill in your natural sparse eyebrows with just a small amount of extensions. Or we have people come in with no eyebrow and we can create a beautiful natural looking brow. It’s the amount of time and product that will affect the cost.

I was so thrilled to have this done. I always had sparse eyebrows as I over plucked them as a teenager and they never really grew in. The idea of permanent tattooing is not something I would do and I spent oodles of dollars in eye pencils and products to help them grow. I laid down on a comfortable cot and was informed the entire time as to what was being done and why. The procedure is painless and relaxing. First my existing brows were cleaned up and a tint was applied. That alone was a huge improvement. What I love is that as the faux hairs are being applied you can decide if you want more as it’s being done. The outcome was fantastic. They looked so natural and unobvious. The Little Lash Boutique is devoted completely to beautifying eyelashes and eyebrows. If you are interested in finding out what is best for your personal needs, I would suggest going in for a complementary consultation and speak to one of their knowledgeable and experienced estheticians -JL

Preventive Care Is A Family Affair
No matter your age, proper dental care is all about prevention The American Dental Association recommends a dental cleaning and examination twice a year. Start examinations at age 3 to diagnose dental problems in their early stages. Be sure the dentist performs an oral cancer exam by checking the tongue, cheeks, gums, palate and all soft tissues. To reduce the risk of oral cancer, limit alcohol consumption and tobacco use. Digital dental x-rays should be taken to diagnose problems hidden under the gums, including decay, abscesses, cysts and impacted teeth. Develop a home care program tailored to your specific needs.

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH SORORITIES? As a freshman entering into college you may find yourself overwhelmed with yet another big decision that has to be made; do I join a sorority or not? My first and most important piece of advice is to just try it out. There’s no harm in going through recruitment and realizing it just isn’t for you, but at least you gave yourself the option. However, you may find yourself along the masses of girls who are eager to rock those Greek letters around campus and be a part of the Greek Community. As a member of a sorority, Chi Omega to be specific, I can tell you there is so much that comes from being involved in Greek life, some say it truly makes the college experience and I agree. It’s not all partying and hazing like the movies love to make it out to be. It is about a sense of community and togetherness,
a special bond that will last a lifetime. By joining a sorority you are creating friendships for life. While being a part of the Greek community, it pushes you to get involved on your campus whereas you may not have had the same opportunities if you weren’t in a sorority. Greeks are very centered on philanthropy and community service. As undergraduates, Greeks raise approximately 7 million dollars per year for charity. My sorority, Chi Omega, supports the Make a Wish Foundation as our national philanthropy. Since 2001, nationally, Chi Omega has raised over $14.6 million dollars for Make-A-Wish to help grant over 2,000 wishes

to children with terminal cancer. It’s pretty amazing to be a part of something so much bigger than yourself that is truly making a difference. Aside from fundraising, Greek life is a great network. After you graduate you are alumni of that sorority for life. You can always feel comfortable contacting someone in your sorority as there will always be
that special connection. Hopefully you take my advice to 'rush a sorority' and give it a chance even though it may seem a bit overwhelming at first. The recruitment process is not that bad! What you should expect is a few long days of meeting each sorority, a lot of small talk, chanting and clapping, talking about your major or where you’re from and meeting hundreds and

hundreds of girls. As you get farther along you start to get a sense of what each sorority is about. The conversations start getting more intimate and you start to feel out which one you want to do. What you should look for in your decision process though, is what room of girls you feel the most comfortable in. What group of girls does the conversation just flow naturally and you feel like you’ve been friends with for years. Remember these are the girls you’re going to be living with, going to the library with, hanging out with, and ordering take out with. You don’t want to focus all your energy on the sororities you’ve heard are the best or the “coolest.” Don’t listen to the stereotypes people say about each sorority at your school either. Most of the time they’re not true and this process is meant for you and only you to figure out where you belong. Try to avoid talking to other girls going through recruitment about which one’s they like or don’t like, everyone’s different. You have to go with what your heart tells you, which group of girl’s you feel you
had a connection with and are dying to be a part of. It definitely can be a lot of energy but don’t be discouraged, everyone ends up where they belong, the process actually does work. To leave you with my final words I’ll tell you joining a sorority is unlike anything else. I can truly say I have over 150 sisters, who will always be connected to me even after we graduate. Being among these amazing girls in my chapter has shaped me into the woman I’m becoming, they’ve encouraged me to be the best I could be and I am forever grateful for these four years together. I can honestly say my college experience has been altered in the greatest way from being a part of Chi Omega. > WRITTEN BY MICHELLE LIFAVI

TIME FOR REFLECTION
Beyond Yesterday,
BEFORE TOMORROW Written By Mary O’Shaughnessy, NPP, Psy.D
Last December, I was abruptly stopped in my tracks by debilitating back pain. I was forced to be still. What do you do, when there is nothing you can do? Life for me was one continuous sunrise after another. There was no activity to orient the days, weeks or months. Just time. On a six month “forced reflective retreat”, I truly had no choice but to just “BE.” Night after night, I paced the parameters of my home and frequently stopped to gaze out of the bay window in my living room, witnessing one dawn following another. Throughout many nights I roamed from room to room to try to relieve the pressure in my back and legs. I thought about the years, the activities, the growth, the laughter and the sorrow that was shared in each one of them. It was like watching a movie that had been rewound to the beginning of the story. The large gatherings in the dining room at Thanksgiving are my most cherished memories. As I wandered around the house each night, waiting for the dawn, I touched the chairs as I walked remembering my loved ones, both alive and those who have died. I think about the conversations with children, grandparents, family and friends that took place in those well positioned chairs. In the darkness I can remember the chatter, the clanging silverware and toasting to each other with the special Waterford glasses that my mother gave me over the past 35 years. Most of all I recall the prayers and sentiments of gratitude for each other and our blessings. And for that moment, that night, I was in a space of peace. Each room, over the years, was often

filled with family and friends of all ages. Many human experiences, from ordinary days to extraordinary moments were shared. Important birthdays, graduations, retirements and even funerals were reason for many of our times together. Most gatherings marked a significant transition in a person’s life. One thing I could do while pacing or lying flat on my back was to try to organize a lifetime of family photographs. What started out to be a functionally organizational project to help me feel as though I was “doing something” turned out to be ( what we call in psychological terms), “a life review process.” Childhood, adulthood, marriage, birth of two sons and all of the wonderful memories of my life came flooding before me. Very emotional and almost too overwhelming to bear, I had to pause, slow down and take time to take in all of those wonderful moments that turned into minutes, hours, weeks, months, years…and then finally a life time. I found myself feeling grateful for this wonderful life and happy that throughout my life, I took every opportunity available to create memories that in many ways will extend beyond time. The seasons did pass, as they always
will, and for six months I lived in an experience of timelessness. I often questioned, “What it is that separates moments into minutes, hours into days, days to weeks, weeks to months, months to years and finally, years into a lifetime?” Now, the summer is over and new beginnings surround us. Once again it is a season of life transitions. Yellow buses emerge from their cocoons’ to swoop up our children to begin a new schedule that will set the tone for a new year. Young adults venture off to college, and parents may or may not celebrate the “empty nest syndrome.” In the Fall, most people experience major life changes that affect their family, friends and co-workers. Time takes on new perspectives and routines that supply a natural cadence to days, weeks, months, years and lifetimes. Summer festivities will be replaced by Autumn Festivals and a new cycle begins. Now, after successful back surgery, I will walk away from my bay window to actually participate in the seasons of life once more. As the leaves on the trees reflect the magnificent colors of nature at its best, I am reminded that life continues whether we enter into it or not. What I DID learn about time throughout the many sunrises of my “forced reflective retreat,” is that each dawn is more than just one more morning to complete life’s tasks at hand. It is an opportunity to create moments in time that reach beyond the boundaries of minutes, days, weeks, months, years and finally lifetimes. Beyond Yesterday and Before Tomorrow is, “NOW.”

When the kids return to school and busy parents are pressed for time, fast food and frozen entrees are the easiest yet least healthy options. The following is a simple recipe that can be completed in approximately 30 minutes. It packs a good portion of vitamins A, C, B-6, Iron and Magnesium. Turkey or chicken sausage can replace pork for a leaner option, and gluten free or whole wheat pasta work just as well.
INGREDIENTS • ½ lb. pasta • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 lb. sausage meat, out of casing. Most markets sell sausage meat this way. • 1 lb. baby spinach, cleaned and dry. • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • ¼ teaspoon ground pepper • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder • 3/4 cup heavy cream • Grated parmesan cheese DIRECTIONS 1. Bring a large pot of generously salted water on high heat. Continue to the next step but be mindful to add pasta when the water is at a rolling boil. Stir the cooking pasta occasionally and don’t forget it! Take it out when it is al dente and set it aside. 2. In a large sauce pan (deep enough to be able to hold all of the spinach) heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil on medium/low heat. 3. Add the sausage meat and break up with a wooden spoon into bite size pieces. 4. When the sausage is browned, add the entire bag of cleaned spinach and simmer while gently turning the spinach over to ensure it all cooks (2 minutes) 5. Sprinkle the salt, pepper and garlic powder on top of sausage/spinach mixture and add the heavy cream to the pot. The pasta should be ready at this point. Drain it and put aside till last step 6. Simmer for a few minutes while gently stirring till the cream thickens slightly. 7. Toss the drained pasta into the pot and incorporate all of the ingredients together.
8. Put into a serving bowl and sprinkle with grated cheese. Note: Feel free to add any other spices your family likes and increase the amount of spinach if desired.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO, OR NOT DO WITH YOUR WEDDING GOWN AFTER THE WEDDING? We asked Dan Tran to answer some questions as to how to clean and preserve one of the most special and expensive items ever bought, a wedding gown. THE LIST: What is wedding dress preservation? DAN: This is a special cleaning and packaging techniques used to ensure your gown retains its beauty. A professional preservationist will survey your gown: the materials, embellishments and various stains, then formulate a specialized cleaning procedure. “Cleaning your gown is the single most important part of the preservation process. LONG ISLAND HOSPITALITY BALL
The 2015 Long Island Hospitality Ball, held the first of June at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, was a night of sensory delights and a huge success raising $380,000 to benefit the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund and Spirits Up! The gala was created by Keith Hart, a hospitality industry mainstay and cancer survivor, to raise funds for charity by showcasing offerings from the region’s top restaurants, wine and spirit brands, nightclubs and entertainers as well as hotels and catering halls.

The Revolution of
JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY Joint replacement is gaining in popularity because it is proven to be the best longterm treatment to alleviate the pain, stiffness and suffering from “bone-on-bone” arthritis of the hip and knee. However, patient experiences in 2015 have improved drastically compared to those of the past. Major improvements in surgical technique, implant materials and perioperative management allow expedited recovery, longer durability, higher function and quicker pain relief than ever. Many patients are fearful to undergo joint replacement surgery because of stories from the past of prolonged pain, suffering and intense physical therapy. These stories have encouraged the fellowshiptrained joint replacement surgeons at Southside Hospital to focus on establishing evidence based protocols
to dramatically improve the patient experience. Many new techniques and medications are employed today to improve pain control. Our patients receive injections with special longacting local anesthetics, which can numb the surgical site for up to 72 hours and thereby greatly reducing surgical pain. These long-acting local anesthetics are part of a multimodal approach to pain management which includes local anesthetics, nonnarcotic oral medications and low dose narcotic pain medications. By improving pain control and reducing the side effects of pain medications, our patients are comfortable enough to walk on their joint replacement within the first few hours after surgery. In addition to improvements in pain control, now we have a much better understanding of anatomy which has led to
2015 TOWN OF BABYLON WOUNDED SOLDIER RIDE
On July 17th, The Wounded Warrior Project and the Town of Babylon sponsored the 2015 Town of Babylon Wounded Soldier Ride. The 25 mile race began at Babylon Town Hall and covered a town wide course on public roadways, finishing at Overlook Beach. The Alumni program provides long-term support through a wide range of complimentary programs designed to give ongoing support. Soldier Ride is a Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) initiative that provides rehabilitative cycling opportunities across the country to help injured warriors restore their physical and emotional well-being and to raise awareness in support of the Wounded Warrior Project organization.
Coming Up... PINK FLAGS OF OCTOBER Each year around this time you will see about 250 pink flags on the front lawn of the Good Samaritan Hospital. The West Islip Breast Cancer coalition started this program “Pink Flags of October” a few years ago to commemorate October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You have an opportunity to participate in this event, showing devotion for a special person in your life who has been affected by breast cancer, dedicating one of these flags “ In Honor Of “ or “In Loving Memory Of “that person. The money raised will go to their “Lend A Helping Hand” program, which provides support services to women-undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. WIBCC is a non-profit 501© 2 grassroots organization founded in 1992 working to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. PINK FLAGS OPENING CEREMONY September 27th at 3:00pm at the: Good Samaritan Hospital Front Lawn
By Michael Nett, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon at Southside Hospital > Rapid recovery from joint replacement is easier today than ever before. It is estimated in the United States that over 300,000 hip replacements and 600,000 knee replacements are performed each year.
better surgical approaches and techniques. Minimally invasive exposure of the hip and knee joint has allowed surgeons to implant joint replacements accurately while minimizing damage to surrounding muscles, tendons and soft tissue. The preservation of the patient's native anatomy minimizes that time for recovery and facilitates postoperative rehabilitation. Historically many patients required lengthy hospitalization of seven to 10 days and inpatient rehabilitation stays for upwards of an additional three to six weeks. Patient's today at Southside Hospital are often discharged within two days of surgery and work with a physical therapist in the comfort of the home. We frequently see patients who are completely independent within two to three weeks from the joint replacement surgery. These
patients can often drive safely and are involved in low-impact sports including golf, cycling or light doubles tennis within the first month of surgery. Improved pain control and rapid recovery cannot surpass the importance of long-term durability and high function. The research and development of new implant designs and materials allow dramatic improvements in longevity despite the higher demands of our more active patients. The bearing surfaces of our modern joint replacements include durable ceramics and special high grade medical plastics (highly cross-linked, anti-oxidant impregnated polyethylene) which have been shown to have minimal wear on mechanical stimulators for up to 75 years. It is now a historic idea that most patients would require revision surgery during their lifetime.

Sport activities that can help any dog, including your own, improve fitness, both mental and physical.
WEIGHT PULL FOR DOGS The founder and co-owner, Rolissa Nash, a dog trainer for more than a half century, answers some questions about the sport Q: What is Weight Pull? RN: It’s a sport in which dogs compete by pulling a cart or sled with progressively heavier weights. The winner is the dog who pulls the greatest load in proportion to his size. Q: Is this competition limited to certain breeds or sizes? RN: We have all kinds—a huge French Mastiff, bully breeds, Samoyeds and other sled dogs. But we also have some little dogs, small terriers, a Bichon Frise and others that you would generally see lounging on a lap. Small dogs—and we have some competitors who weigh only about 20 pounds—will pull much lighter loads than the bigger working breeds. Every breed and size can benefit from this exercise. Q: How much weight can a dog pull? RN: Dogs are extraordinarily strong creatures, and some of the top competitors pull thousands of pounds. But those are the Olympians in the field. Most dogs pull far lighter loads, with weights that are appropriate for their size, age, and level of fitness. Q: How did you get interested? RN: I do agility with my Bullmastiff, Shadow, and I felt my dog needed more core strength to compete safely. So I use weight pull as a training mechanism. I developed a stronger dog.
Q: What kind of training is involved?
Q: How long has this sport been around?
RN: First things first, your dog should have a foundation in basic obedience, so he’s under control and can stay calm in an exciting, highly stimulating environment. You start easy, first getting the dog accustomed to the idea of pulling something light, like a dragging a leash behind him. Then we get the dog comfortable in the harness, which is specially designed for this activity. Only after we have a strong foundation will we progress to an empty cart, and, as the dog’s muscles build up, additional weight.
RN: As an organized, competitive sport, it’s relatively new, only about 30 years old. The first competitions were conducted by sled-dog organizations, which turned the traditional work of Malamutes and other arctic breeds into a competition. But, for hundreds of years, dogs have earned their keep by pulling heavy loads. We’ve seen news photographs of draft dogs hauling machine guns to the Western front during World War I, for example. One of our most beloved children’s stories centers on working weight puller—A Dog of Flanders. And of course, who can forget the dramatic scene of the wager in The Call of the Wild?
Q: It sounds a lot like strength training for people. Is it similar? RN: The basic principles are the same. A person doesn’t have to be Mr. Universe to benefit from lifting weights. Anyone—old or young, man or woman— can improve fitness through strength training. Weight pull is just strength training for dogs. Muscles are built up gradually through the addition of progressively heavier muscle loads. That’s how you become stronger without risking injury. Q: Can’t a dog get hurt?
Ongoing Classes Day or Night Sessions All Ages & Levels of Obedience Breed Handling Agility Specialty Food & Toys Training Supplies Gift Certificates
RN: Safety is our primary concern. In addition to building up slowly, there are many measures taken to avoid injury. For one thing, we never use treats as a lure, because we want the dog to listen to what his body is telling him, and not strain to get a goody.
Q: Some people say this sport is cruel. How do you react to that? RN: To that, I say, “Come out to one of our classes or competitions and see for yourself.” You’ll see a lot of happy, fit dogs having a ball with their people. And, they’ll be calm and centered, like athletes who have just had a great workout, because that’s what they are! I want to give people the opportunity to look at it, evaluate it, and see the benefits that can come to their dog from trying it.
