THE LAKEHOUSE

because they know how much we care.”

The LakeHouse...

All Seasons, All Occasions BY MARY WHITE WOOD

Knowing the reputation of The LakeHouse Restaurant, I was excited to visit and meet owners Matthew and Eileen Connors, and Jay Gut. This bayside treasure, located at the southern-most point of Maple Avenue, has established itself as a pillar for fine dining on the south shore. Upon arrival, I was greeted by two beach cruisers leaning against the front walkway and the salty breeze off the Great South Bay. I smiled as I thought of Fire Island. Once inside, I could see Fire Island from the dining room; across the bay, which sparkled in the crisp afternoon sun. “That’s one of the best aspects of visiting for lunch”, Jay explains, “You can see the view”. Inside, what looked like a book club, several businesstype lunches, a few couples, and some ‘ladies who lunch’ all sat near a wall of windows in the dining room, enjoying the magnificent backdrop of the mouth of the bay with the ferries going by. “Lunch is more laid back”, Jay continues, “It’s casual dress and more accessible prices. It’s just lunch, done exceptionally well. On a sunny day people gravitate to the main dining room, but if it’s cold or stormy, everyone wants to sit in the cozy ‘fireplace room’, especially when it’s decorated for the fall holidays.” The different spaces, which also include a private dining room with a long family table and a separate Tap Room, offer a variety of atmospheres designed for enjoying good company and great food. No wonder people have been booking the restaurant for family events like baptisms, birthdays, even

‘celebrations of life’. Having been raised in Bay Shore, this restaurant showcases everything I love about the south shore waterfront. I’d be proud to bring my family here. Chef Matthew Connors grew up here too. After years of serving as chef de cuisine at Veritas in New York City, he and his wife Eileen came home to open a restaurant and be part of the community. And they are building community. “It’s a community of caring people,” Eileen explains. “We have year-round clientele who know food and wine and like what we like. We have employees who have been with us since the beginning, hence becoming our family. We all strive to provide a consistently excellent experience, so our regulars know what to expect. And when they walk in that door, and they are already happy to be here, they’ve just added to the experience of everyone in the house.” “This is much more than a career for us; this is a privilege. We strive every day to be better. We have guests who have been coming for dinner every Tuesday or Thursday for ten years. We need to be better—for them!” Eileen spends all her time in the dining room, ensuring seamless service, and getting feedback from customers. All three owners regularly eat in the dining room themselves. “People speak their minds to us; they are invested in our success. And they treat us kindly

High standards and operational excellence are critical to the entire team. Jay and Matthew designed what they call their ‘dream kitchen’ from a blank slate with operational flow and culinary artistry as the priorities. Jay took me through the spotless, stainless, spacious area, where each prep station was well organized. I pointed to some job aids that ensured key dishes were plated perfectly and remarked, “Ahh consistency!” Jay turned a serious face to me and said “We’ve built our entire reputation on it.” The dinner menu is a mix of several ‘LakeHouse Classics’ that repeat customers won’t let Chef Matthew take off the menu, like the Roasted Berkshire Pork Chop that’s been brined for two days and served with a maple-bacon vinaigrette; and several ‘In Season’ dishes that Chef Matthew changes on a regular basis. The fall dishes emphasize seasonal flavors: root vegetables and comfort foods. Chef Matthew treats his work in the kitchen like an artist, always developing the food and the talent. For lunch, I had the crab cake, moist, flaky and delicate; as well as the tomato bisque, delightfully rich with a swirl of basil infused extra virgin olive oil. The bisque was served with a crème fresh truffled gruyere grilled cheese, which made for indulgent dunking indeed. Paired with a glass of refreshing Prosecco, this was a lunch to savor. And savor I did, while enjoying the view, as Jay had to get back to work and Eileen and Matthew had to step out because they “coach cross country running” locally. After lingering, I walked through the uncrowded parking lot and chuckled at what the locals said about LakeHouse dining after the summer swarms have left the south shore: “We get our restaurant back”.

Much to be thankful for. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all that we have, and a time we embrace tradition, whether old or new. A time to entertain, to decorate, to celebrate. This issue is filled with all of that and more. We had a lot of fun putting together this issue; doing photo shoots, visiting with old friends, and meeting some terrific new people. We also learned a lot along the way. It’s truly one of the things I love about The LIST…we are constantly learning something new. Yet an inviting setting and a fabulous meal are just one part of a memorable Thanksgiving. The real gratitude comes from the people in your life; the family and friends that are part of your day-to-day dealings, or loved ones who always remain in your hearts, regardless of the distance between you. Celebrating unique traditions with family and friends is one of the things I love best about the holidays. This is also a time of year when many of us are inspired to get involved with helping the community, whether by donating items to a food pantry, serving a meal at a homeless shelter, or writing a check to a favorite charity. We’ve rounded up a few local food banks and worthy organizations in need of support. What better way to kick-off the holidays than by giving. Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

MUST KNOW

With the spirit of the holidays already stirring, father and son business partners, Mark and Dylan Perlman, founders and owners of The Argyle Theatre, wanted to take a moment to reflect and give thanks…

Reflections and Thoughts of Gratitude MARK AND DYLAN PERLMAN OF THE ARGYLE THEATRE

“We are incredibly grateful for our community; the local municipal leadership, and our patrons and sponsors who enable us to do what we do here at The Argyle. We're grateful for the amazing team that we've formed of the most passionate and hardworking people who care so deeply about our mission and are committed to this amazing theatrical startup. We're grateful for the mind-blowing talent that has graced our stage, designed and directed our shows, played in our orchestras and worked on our sets, props, and costumes. A live theatrical venue is a very complex organization that requires many different people in many different fields working together to create an amazing product for the most important stakeholder: the audience. We thank each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts.” The Argyle Theatre is the newest and largest year-round professional Equity Theater on Long Island. They regard personal attention to their patrons and partners as

paramount. Perlman remarked “We strive to provide ‘quality, comfort and convenience’; the highest quality Broadway-caliber productions, in a plush environment with comfortable seating and leg room, and the convenience of all that Babylon has to offer.” “Hearing audiences cheering and raving and seeing the smiles of our patrons as they depart the theater after a show is awe-inspiring. One of our favorite moments is when patrons return to a show with their friends and/or family. There is something so special about live theater and the electricity it produces. In a day and age with the world at our fingertips, there is something ancient and pure about live entertainment. 2020 will be a very important year for The Argyle Theatre. People can expect stunning productions, with a continued commitment to bringing Broadway to Babylon. If you have enjoyed our shows, thank you for being a part of our family and continue to help us spread the word about this magical place on Main Street in Babylon Village.”

If you haven't been to The Argyle Theatre yet, go and experience what everyone is raving about! The holidays are such a wonderful time to stroll through the Village of Babylon. Plan a day out to enjoy the beautiful views, shopping, and restaurants, then catch a show at The Argyle. This year, give a special gift to your family: start a new holiday tradition by enjoying a live presentation all together. Get tickets to Miracle on 34th Street to kick-off the holiday season and fire-up some holiday spirit! Award winning Miracle on 34th Street is one of those genuine holiday classics that the entire family will look forward to gathering together for. MUST KNOW

R A G I N G G R A C E F U L LY

Annie started writing her column, Raging Gracefully, because she’s committed to the idea that regardless of how old one becomes, raging as opposed to simply aging, is the new paradigm for stalling Father Time. If we all get behind her ideology maybe Mother Nature will agree. We are counting on that.

The Shrine of My Life BY ANN I E N I L A ND Why do I love teaching Group Exercise classes? Let me count the ways. I’ve worshiped at its alter for decades, committed to saving lost souls who haven’t seen the light. I flinch when someone denounces my religion and tells me flatly, “I don’t do classes.” Heretics! “You don’t do classes?” I parrot, trying to keep the quiver out of my suddenly high-pitched voice, “Have you ever tried any?” As they ease their hand from my clasp, my ears fold in when I hear, “Nah, it’s just not my thing.” That’s when I take a knee and pray for them. Time to regroup! So, I retreat to the Yoga room and sit in lotus. As I breathe deeply to still my mind, I meditate on sales campaigns to recruit new students. I’m determined to sell what has prime real estate in my heart; the joy, effectiveness, and community of Group Exercise Classes. Here’s the pitch: How to Succeed in Group X Without Really Trying:

• Hide behind the hard-working person standing in front of you in class and coast, but make sure to grunt when they do.

• Pay it forward! When the instructor

looks the other way, engage the person next to you in conversation. After all, it’s an act of kindness to alert them about the current Friends and Family Sale at Macy’s.

• If the intensity rises in class,

remember how the instructor always encourages everyone to work at their own pace. Exit class and tip-toe to the bathroom during push-ups or planks. Revisit as needed….always at your own pace.

• Wear a knee brace to class and keep

pointing to it when you don’t feel like doing lunges and squats, even when the instructor is right beside you offering modifications.

• Approach the instructor after class

and ask questions about certain exercises that she/he already addressed in class so you can avoid going home to a huge pile of laundry.

• In spin class, when the instructor

encourages everyone to increase tension on the fly wheel by turning it to the right, make a left. The road less taken will make all the difference.

• Consistently arrive late so the class is shorter.

If the instructor reminds everyone about the importance of arriving on time to ensure a proper warm-up, try the following go-to excuses:

My dog or cat ran away. (If you don’t currently

have either but there was a time you did have a pet and it did run away, it’s technically not a lie). My toddler threw a tantrum (not the best

excuse if you’re in menopause) My doctor’s appointment ran late (avoid this

one at a 5:45 am class) My GPS gave the wrong directions. It’s best to

say this one with a smile and a wink if you’re a regular in class.

Did I just hear a smile? Still crazy after all these years. History keeps repeating when I return home pumped up with adrenaline and my drug of choice, endorphins, and disrupt the mellow vibes my husband deserves after a hard day’s night by buzzing around the house. When he sees me heading for the usual crash and burn, he sets up a roadblock by clasping both my arms, forcing me to pump the brakes. His eyes plead with mine and I hear the usual beg before his mouth opens. “Annie, have you ever tried sitting?” Head tilted to the side with my hands on my hips I answer flatly, “Nah it’s just not my thing.”

Bubba's is Back!! Since opening in 2009, Bubba’s Burrito Bar quickly became a local phenomenon and destination spot, well-known for their distinctive Cali-style oversized burritos. Over the years as word got out, Tim and his wife, Connie, realized they simply could not keep up with the increasing demand from their ever-growing fan base. After closing on February 28, and enduring a 4-month renovation, Bubba’s is back and better than ever with increased seating and staffing. They are still the same Bubba’s Burritos – a beachy, family-run burrito bar – just double the size! The new Bubba’s is mostly about more space. The kitchen is twice as large to better manage the high volume, and they added four new phone lines in effort to take more orders. Outside, a front patio offers bistro seating. Inside, there is seating for 32, plus the bar area - our favorite new feature! They added a lengthy wooden bar sporting 8 tap beers and stools for you and 11 of your BFFs. Picture this: an icy cold craft beer….game on the big screen…Bubba’s burrito in hand (actually, you need both hands to eat these

babies!) Doesn’t get much better than that. Living the dream in Islip. The bar is really a great addition - in front sits 12 stools; behind the bar a four-screen television display is mounted, perfect for watching the game. There are also 8 additional taps at the front counter. Owner Tim is all about craft and specialty beers, which will rotate. Not limited to beer, wine and seasonal sangrias are also served at the bar. Coming soon are margaritas, Bubba’s style, as well as house-infused tequilas and other cocktail favorites. Also available is an exclusive bar menu, which includes mini-burritos, chips & dip combos, wings in specialty hot sauces, baskets of fries loaded with various toppings, flavor-stuffed churros and more.

course, their Soft Fish Tacos are still on the menu. Various quesadillas, tacos, soups, and salads are also available. In keeping with their California-meets-thesouth-shore-of-LI vibe, Bubba’s held on to their iconic local art and surf scene decor. Their surf videos, music, and laid-back, casual atmosphere draws crowds of all ages, with customers ranging from high school and college students, to families and grandparents.

Although there are more tables and seating, Bubba’s has stayed true to its roots and remains a counter-serve spot - there is no wait staff.

Born and raised in Islip, The Henriksens care about their customers. Tim works the burrito bar every day, and Connie handles the behind-the-scenes work. They feel strongly about giving back to the community and largely support local charities and fundraisers. Tim’s environmentally-conscious mindset is a large part of Bubba’s mission. Straws, napkins, cups and containers are all environmentally friendly. Bubba’s interior is made from repurposed wood, with pieces from Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and, of course, Long Island. The countertop is actually the now-closed Bay Shore Bowling Alley’s lanes!

Despite so many new changes at Bubba’s, their fabulous food and massive burritos remain the same. All the fan-favorites, like the Guilt Trip, the Brotato, the Inferno, the Buffalo Burrito (Connie’s favorite), and of

Even though they have added more space, you can probably still expect some wait time at Bubba’s. No worries, the food is worth the wait…yep, it’s that good. Enjoy a drink at the bar while you’re waiting. Cheers!

Entertaining in AUTUMN

THE TABLE Thanksgiving is almost upon us. We love this holiday because the only goal is to spend time with loved ones. And eat. There is something very special about setting a beautiful table for friends and family to gather around. It definitely adds a little magic to the meal. Just thinking about Thanksgiving put us in the mood to throw a little gettogether. Loving the crisp autumn afternoons, we decided to savor the season and set our table al fresco amidst the beauty of nature’s backdrop. Pairing wildflowers and natural elements with glass-enclosed fall colored candles gave our table an air of casual elegance. All it needs is some wine. The magnificent arrangement gracing our dining table was created by Jaclyn Rutigliano, floral designer and owner of pop-up flower truck Hometown Flower Co.. Using only locally-sourced flowers, picked weekly from a collective of Long Island flower farms, Jaclyn creates arrangements in cooperation with whatever Mother Nature has in bloom. Never a fan of traditional roses, Jaclyn has always preferred rather unique flowers and unusual vases for her centerpieces. “Have fun with your table and embrace the individuality of each stem. We like our arrangements to feel lush and

seasonal, while looking like they grew in a field of wildflowers.“ “Texture and color make for a beautiful centerpiece. This arrangement features a lush mixture of rich colors and blooms, including white turned ‘antique’ hydrangeas, dinner plate and pom pom dahlias, celosia, amaranthus, strawflower, pampas, and stonecrop, amongst others. Adding extra greens, dried flowers, and branches give a more dynamic look to arrangements. Don’t be afraid to showcase your personality and let the flowers guide you.” When setting your table, remember to display your arrangements so that guests can still see one another and converse across the table without any obstructions. Rather than doing one large centerpiece, consider doing a several small ones that can be scattered down the length of your table. Group a harmonious variety of individual floral stems in various size bud vases or vintage apothecary jars. Create a variety of arrangements within the same color palette and cluster them together on the table.

FA L L D É C O R

Grazing Tables Starring as both the food and the décor, a “grazing table” is a long table brimming with artfully arranged meats, cheeses, crudité, crackers, breads, hors d’oeuvres, condiments, nuts, seasonal fruit and more. A grazing table is an elegant way to entertain your guests with appetizers when they arrive at your home before dinner is served; or a perfect alternative to offer at a cocktail party. It’s a relaxed way for you and your guests to mingle. Eye-catching and delicious, they are easy enough to make and your guests will love it!

• Bite-sized hors d’oeuvres, like

SETTING UP THE TABLE

stuffed mushrooms or mini quiches, are also great to have on your table. Choose foods that will keep well at room temperature.

• Use your table as one long

tray, but put down a layer of parchment paper to protect the table prior to placing serving boards and platters upon it. Do use serving dishes; it’s not a good idea to put food directly on the table. If hosting a small gathering, a “parchment runner” can be laid down the center of table for serving platters.

• Offer a selection of breads,

baguettes, bread sticks, and crackers in all different shapes and sizes. It’s a good idea to vary taste and texture among the breads as well as the cheeses.

• Condiments and dipping sauces

for bread and crudite’ are a must. Try sweet preserves or honey, tart chutneys, gourmet mustards, and herb-infused olive oils.

• We varied the height of our

serving boards, trays, and stands, which made for a striking presentation.

• Various other sweet and salty

• Add small bowls for dips, jams

and soft cheeses, along with spoons and cheese knives. We put our plates, napkins and cutlery on a nearby table, easily accessible to guests.

• Bunches of grapes and fresh

herb sprigs are great for filling in any large gaps you may have on your table.

SELECTING CHEESES • Include a mix of different

cheeses and a variety of textures; select creamy, hard, crumbly, and aged cheeses.

• Most cheese belongs to one of

four basic categories: aged, soft, firm, or blue. For a good variety, choose at least one from each group. Some examples: Aged: Aged Cheddar, Comte, Goat Gouda

Soft: Constant Bliss, Brie, Camembert, BrillatSavarin Firm: Manchego, Mimolette, ParmigianoReggiano Blue: Gorgonzola Dolce, Valdeón, Stilton

• You may want to label and identify the

cheeses with festive tags so your guests know what they are eating. Consider offering a mix of different milks (goat’s milk, cow’s milk, and sheep’s milk cheeses) if allergies are an issue.

ACCOMPANIMENTS • Cured meats are perfect partners for cheese. Hard salami, Prosciutto, Pancetta, smoked ham, dry-cured Chorizo, Capicola, and Soppressata are all popular cheese board meats.

items, such as nuts and assorted dried fruits, like figs and apricots, also work well. Include cashews, pistachios, flavored almonds and other roasted or candied nuts. Olives and pickles are also crowd pleasers.

• Seasonal fresh fruit such as

pears, peaches and apples are always a nice addition. We used fresh figs on our grazing table. Roasted red peppers and roasted eggplant caponata are delicious. Homemade is wonderful, but often you can find a quality jarred brand that is also good.

SET IT AND FORGET IT Once you’ve set up your grazing table, don’t worry about refreshing it as supplies dwindle; this is just something to tide folks over. Pour yourself a cocktail and enjoy time well-spent with your guests!

MUST KNOW

CBD 101

CBD 101:

ABC's of CBD CBD is a natural remedy that is quickly gaining momentum in the health & wellness arena. We wanted (and needed!) some educating about this new product that is popping up everywhere, so we contacted owner of Shore Drugs and Registered Pharmacist Larry Leon for some answers and explanation. A pharmacist for over 35 years and owner of Shore Drug for three decades (!), Leon has a strong background in integrative medicine and is very knowledgeable on all things CBD. Can you explain exactly what CBD is?

Is CBD legal?

CBD is short for “cannabidiol”, a naturally occurring compound found in hemp, which is extracted from the cannabis plant’s stem. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects, CBD will not induce a high sensation. CBD is a safe, non-addictive, nonpsychoactive substance.

What is the difference between marijuana and CDB?

What forms is CBD available in? CBD comes in oils, topical creams, capsules, gummies, teas, coffees, various beverages, and can be inhaled in vape pens.

What type of ailment would someone use CBD for?

Both marijuana and hemp are members of the cannabis family, making them similar in many ways. The government classifies hemp as any plant of the cannabis family that contains less than 0.3% THC. Marijuana is classified as any plant of the cannabis family that contains greater than 0.3% THC, which will produce a “high” feeling, making it illegal.

How is CBD different from medical marijuana? While medical marijuana contains CBD, it also contains THC, which is why it is still illegal in most states. Most states require licensing for physicians in order for them to treat eligible patients with medical marijuana. Patients must have written prescriptions for a qualifying diagnosis. CBD does not require a prescription.

Thanks to a recently passed 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived CBD containing less than 0.3% THC is legal to grow, produce, and process in all 50 states.

CBD actually has a rich medicinal history going back thousands of years. It is currently used to treat muscle and joint pain, spasticity, inflammation, anxiety, depression, PTSD, nausea, digestive issues, headaches, hot flashes, insomnia and overall well-being. It is also becoming very popular for treating pets.

Will using CBD result in feeling high? No! CBD contains less than 0.3% THC, the psychoactive substance responsible for the “high” feeling.

Is CBD safe to use? In general, CBD is considered to be quite safe, although years of studies still need to be completed in order to determine its safety and efficacy. It’s all about quality and purity. If you

are considering using CBD products, due diligence for pure products that are produced in a controlled environment by a reputable company is necessary. Low-grade CBD products sold by nonreputable brands may contain contaminants or toxins, which could lead to adverse health effects.

Are there side effects from CBD? They are very seldom reported. Drowsiness, dry mouth, and feeling light-headed seem to be the most common.

Will CBD interact with other medications? Yes, CBD has the potential to interact with medications that are metabolized by the Cytochrome P450 system. Cytochrome P450 (CYP) is a hemeprotein that plays a key role in the metabolism of drugs. It is very important to check with your doctor prior to using CBD products, especially if taking prescription medications.

Are all CBD products created equal? What is important to know when selecting a CBD product? All CBD products are NOT created equal. You should track product production from seed to finished product. Different manufacturers use different extraction methods and different chemical solvents, which can all lead to a good

or bad experience for the product user. Other than one prescription drug used to treat rare, severe forms of epilepsy, the FDA has not approved any CBD products. Because these products have not received FDA approval, there is no regulation over the companies producing them, similar to vitamin and supplement makers. Therefore it is important to verify the reputation of the companies that make the products, as well as the businesses that are selling the products.

Can you offer some advice for selecting the right product? Absolutely! Here are my 5 tips for selecting the right product: 1. First and foremost, talk with your doctor or pharmacist to confirm CBD is safe for you to use. 2. Upon approval, speak about what condition you want to treat with CBD so you can use the best product available in the most effective form. 3. Do your homework! Research the manufacturers. There is plenty of information on companies’ websites, including third party testing and product verification. 4. Select a product you feel comfortable taking, as well as paying for. 5. Allow 7 – 14 days of dosage prior to assessing whether or not it is effective.

For more information, to purchase CBD products or for a consultation about CBD products, you can contact Larry Leon at Shore Drug. 30 E. MAIN STREET, BAY SORE | 631.665-3000 | SHOREDRUG.COM

GIVING THANKS

MUST KNOW

Being Thankful By Anthony Cerabino B.M.,LMT,M.S.,L.Ac Thanksgiving, undeniably a busy holiday with all the cooking and prepping for company, is always a favorite time when, during our family dinner, we offer each other a reason to be thankful. But giving thanks should be a daily ritual, not just one to partake in during the holidays.

Get the point? Another fun exercise is to just say the words, “Thank You, Thank You, Thank You,” over and over, and see how it makes you feel. What a sense of fulfillment the repetition will bring to you.

anger or blame towards someone. With the holidays approaching, wouldn’t it be a wonderful gift for both parties to forgive any wrongdoing? Forgiving does not mean forgetting; merely letting go of something and moving on from it.

You probably have a big smile on your face right now.

Being thankful for everything is a great meditation in gratitude. As you have heard many times, “The Attitude of Gratitude” is a great exercise for your soul. Just say, “Thank You” for everything in your life - for the car you are driving, the home which provides a roof over your head, your children, your spouse, your friends, the food you can easily obtain, the many conveniences in your life including your coffee maker, fresh running water, our numerous electronic gadgets, which include your TV, your computer, your cellphone, etc.

There is always a large return of overjoy with a simple selfless act of giving. For example: when we offer someone helpful directions, when we open a door for someone, or let a person pass ahead of us in a traffic jam. And the simplest gift of all: just to smile and silently wellwish someone who is apparently having a difficult day.

Forgiveness brings people back together again, especially during the holiday season. Forgiveness is obtainable – it may be very challenging at times - but worth the effort. Sometimes when we think that forgiving someone is going to be difficult, it can actually turn out to be quite easy with a quick “let’s just move forward moment,” and the communion of the relationship is rekindled.

“Forgiving” is another word that comes to mind when reflecting on the root word “giving.” The simplest definition of forgiveness is when we stop feeling

Often, the entire family benefits from forgiveness. Now that’s something to celebrate.

BEAUTY & SKINCARE

NON-INVASIVE TREATMENTS AT DREW PATRICK SPA

FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN Dermaplaning is an excellent form of physical exfoliation. During the treatment, we use a tool with sterile blades to gently remove the outer layers of your skin, revealing the skin beneath which is new and healthy. No special preparation is required, and no anesthetic is needed because the process is painless and results are immediate. BE N E F I TS : Dermaplaning removes excess surface

skin cells revealing smoother, softer skin, and aiding in the reduction of fine lines and acne scars. It brightens your complexion by removing

both dead skin cell buildup and vellus hair, which can cause facial skin to look dull, grey and/or ashy. It increases absorption of beneficial

ingredients in treatment products. YO U S HO ULD KNOW: While there is no downtime required

after most dermaplaning treatments, as with any aggressive exfoliation, side effects such as post inflammatory breakouts, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, scratches, cuts and nicks might occur but typically disappear within a day or so. Results from dermaplaning can be

observed with only one treatment! A series of regularly scheduled treatments 4 to 6 weeks apart will help to achieve optimal, ongoing results. Dermaplaning can remove 21 days worth

of dead skin cells, and we do recommend that you allow your skin to complete its full rejuvenation cycle and enjoy the results before your next treatment.

Liquid Facelift is an effective non-surgical facelift option that achieves significant and immediate results using a combination of facial fillers in your cheeks and lips, as well as Botox injections around your forehead and eyes. Our Medical Director, Richard Byrnes, MD, meets with each client before determining an individualized treatment plan. Each client's lifestyle warrants a different approach, therefore he uses a variety of filler options, including Radiesse, Lyft, Voluma, Silk, Juvederm, and Restylane, among others. He is highly trained and skilled in the proper technique to achieve a radiant, natural look. BENEFITS: Helps soften and reduce the

appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead. Plumps lips and adds fullness

to cheeks. Treatment plans are

customized to each client’s individual needs and goals.

CBD Treatments can be tailored to 50, 80, or 110 minute massages. A custom massage allows the client and the therapist the opportunity to discuss areas of client concern and formulate a treatment and an outcome that best addresses the client’s needs. We like to explain that it is a fusion approach to address the concerns the client expresses, and the therapist’s experience and training to create the most effective treatment for them. BENEFITS: We use CBD oil in facials to

purify the skin and reduce inflammation. A CBD muscle and joint

enhancement can also be added to our Luxe Facial to aide in relaxation, ease aches and pains, and to bring about an increased sense of calmness. Effects from the CBD

products applied to areas of the clients concerns are felt relatively quickly. As with any product that has anti-inflammatory benefits, it is always best used cumulatively. We offer a carefully selected line of retail products for use at home.

We always encourage our clients to consult their physician prior to any medical spa treatments to address any questions or concerns they may have related to specific conditions or potential contraindications. Results often vary from client to client. While widely considered safe, we do not perform most medical spa treatments or offer CBD treatments to our maternity massage clients without prior, specific permission from her doctor.

LIFE ON MARS

SHINING LIGHT ON THE DARK SIDE OF BEAUTY

MUST KNOW

Beauty Ain't Always Pretty TOP OFFENDERS: (you won’t find any of these in Life on Mars Beauty products)

CLEAN BEAUTY

Parabens Known to disrupt hormone function and are linked to a risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity.

You've probably heard about clean eating and clean living, but what about “clean beauty”?

Phenoxyethanol Used as an antibacterial in cosmetics and perfumes; very harmful if inhaled, ingested or swallowed, especially to nursing mothers and infants.

It's the latest movement generating buzz about the growing concern over harmful chemicals used in selfcare and beauty products.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Strips the skin of its natural protective oils. Can be very irritating to skin and eyes.

“Years ago, the trend of clean beauty, which means removing any questionable toxic ingredients from your beauty products, was all the rage in Europe, but there was little interest here on the East Coast,” states Cynthia Sansone, founder of Life on Mars Beauty. "As a makeup artist and President of a very big cancer care charity – Mondays at Racine, I began to question the cosmetics I was using on myself as well as on the women in treatment that I was making up. There were no cheap bottles of foundation or eyeshadow pallets from China on my vanity; only high-end brands would suffice my designer taste. As documented, the number of young women who were being diagnosed with cancer here on Long Island was rapidly rising, and I began to see a connection to what I believed played a small part. According to some of the doctors that I worked with, the wellness pie consisted of 5 pieces: genetics; stress; the environmental assault on our bodies; what we put in our bodies; and what we put on our bodies (personal care products).

Mineral Oil and Petroleum Jelly Found in lipsticks, eyeshadows and foundations. Commonly used to coat the skin, like plastic wrap, disrupting the skin's natural barrier, impeding skin’s ability to release toxins. This process also slows normal cell development, causing premature aging. Diazolidinyl Urea and DMDM Hydantoin Cosmetic preservatives that release formaldehyde. Found in many products, mainly nail polish. BHT - AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Found in lipstick, eyeshadow, lip gloss and skin creams; it penetrates skin and remains in the fatty tissue. When metabolized, BHT creates free radicals in the body that can damage DNA in cells. Carbon Black Very popular ingredient in makeup, especially nail polish, eyeliner, and mascara. The most likely effect from exposure is lung disease. Inhaling carbon black particles can irritate the lungs, the eyes, nose and throat.

It was challenging to find a full cosmetics and beauty line that was safe, free of toxic chemicals, beautiful and luxurious. So, back in 2015, my daughter, who is a nurse, and I created Life on Mars Beauty to address the needs of an ever-growing population of women wanting to know what they are putting on their bodies. Life on Mars Beauty is committed to sourcing safe, beautiful and effective products that won’t compromise your health. The skin is the biggest organ. We know toxic chemicals penetrate and accumulate in the system. The immune system can only take so much bombardment before there is a breakdown. As consumers, we have cleaned up our act in the kitchen, opting for organic eggs, produce, and grass-fed meats without any hormones or antibiotics. Green cleaning products are replacing the big brand names. People understand products with a skull & crossbones on the back of the bottle are caustic. The personal care category is one of the last areas where scrutiny is now being imposed.” Scott Faber, VP of Government Affairs at EWG (Environmental Working Group), released an online article in April of this year titled: The Toxic Twenty Chemicals and Contaminants in Cosmetics (visit ewg.org for more info). It states: “Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer can be found in food, water and many other everyday products. However, no category of consumer products is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products. Since 2009, 595 cosmetics manufacturers have reported using 88 chemicals that have been linked to cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm in more than 73,000 products.” Yikes!! Fortunately, consumer awareness is powerful. Due to growing demand, there is a large selection of chemical free and safer skin care products readily available, making it easy to start making the switch. Healthy is beautiful.

MUST KNOW

THE AESTHETIC ROOM

Fall Into Beautiful Skin Now that summer is long gone, it’s time to survey your skin. Long days in the sun and too many things to do in too few hours may have left you with sun spots, dark patches, uneven tone, and overall dull and damaged looking skin. Don’t worry! There are so many effective tools and products that can have your skin looking smooth, polished and bright in time for the holidays.

Our “number one, must-have, can’tstress-how-great-this-will-be-foryour-skin” treatment is Vivace RF Microneedling. This treatment can be done year-round, but it is especially effective for repairing damaged summer skin. The combination of microneedling, radiofrequency, and blue light/red light therapy builds new collagen and elastin, resulting in less wrinkles and reduced sun damage and dark spots. It tightens, brightens, and evens out skin tone making skin appear refreshed and more youthful. Vivace is the highest rated microneedling procedure on RealSelf, and truly provides drastic results for your skin. Down time is just a few hours, and it is safe to use on all skin types. Chemical peels are another good option for stubborn sun spots. Fall is “Peel Season” since sun exposure must be avoided post-treatment. It is the perfect time to schedule a peel to reduce melasma, dark spots, and refine the texture of your skin. Our favorite is the “Advanced Corrective Peel” by Skinceuticals. This clinical-grade peel contains a highly concentrated blend of salicylic and lactic acids, which improve skin’s texture and reduces the appearance of discolorations associated with photoaging (sun), hormones, and even post-inflammatory

hyperpigmentation. This is a great option for anyone battling melasma. Typically, chemical peels are done in a series of three. Available year-round, a Hydrafacial best benefits post-summer skin. If dry, flaky skin and clogged pores are a problem, this facial is for you. Hydrafacials exfoliate the outer layer of skin by applying a light chemical peel, then black heads and dirt are extracted from pores. Hyaluronic acid is infused to rehydrate and replenish dry skin. Skin transforms from dull to bright, and becomes can’t-stop-touching-it soft. Because there is no down time, Hydrafacials are great to do before upcoming weddings or events. Now that summer is over, it’s time to get rid of those unsightly spider veins for next year. Avoiding the sun and wearing compression stockings make it nearly impossible to undergo treatments during the months when you want your legs to look their best. Schedule sclerotherapy treatments now. Sclerotherapy injects glycerin into spider veins to make them disappear. It takes several sessions, and requires wearing a compression stocking for about one week after treatment. The results are amazing… you will strut in your shorts and skirts next summer with confidence!

Lastly, daily use of quality skin care products are mandatory. RETINOLS will help improve your skin’s texture, thickness and reduce wrinkles and dark spots. These products come in different strengths; it’s important to select which one is best suited for you. CE FERULIC by Skinceuticals is one of our favorite daytime vitamin C serums that does it all. It helps build collagen, rehydrate, and even out skin tone. Pair with a retinol at night for excellent results. TRIPLE LIPID RESTORE, also by Skinceuticals, is one of the best moisturizers I’ve ever put on my face. This is great for the end of summer, as well as the winter, when we need as much moisture and hydration as we can get. It works well with almost all skin types. HA5 by SkinMedica is also a favorite product (#1 seller) for both post-summer and cold weather months. This product attracts water and holds on to it. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our body decreases, reducing skin’s ability to remain hydrated. By age 50, only about 50% of the hyaluronic acid we started with remains. HA5 helps plump up the lines around the eyes, the crepey skin around the mouth and neck, and even works wonders on hands. Why do you need two hydrating products? HA5 hydrates from the inside, increasing actual water levels to skin, while the Triple Lipid Restore will moisturize from the outside keeping the hydration locked in. When repairing and restoring summer skin, expertise is paramount when selecting safe and effective products and treatments. Look your best for the holidays this year; reverse the damage, and fall into healthier skin. The time to start is now!
