J M’s dedication

A Poem To Our Mom Joni Meiselman can be described in many ways, A list of adjectives can go on for months or days. Loving, caring, thoughtful, and dedicated are just some words that symbolize her, We cannot explain how lucky and fortunate we are to have Joni as our Mother. Whether it is cleaning, carpool time, meetings, or errands to run here and there, Our mom is always ready to lend an ear, watch a sports game, or be an event chair. Mom’s hard work and support for us and the school is irreplaceable, Congratulations on receiving this award because you are so honorable. Even though your parents are not able to be here to see you shine tonight, You can be positive that they are feeling pride and shear delight. We are so proud of all of your accomplishments and we love you,

to the Jewish community was learned at home and began to flourish in high school: a native of Nashville Tennessee, Joni was President of “B’nai B’rith Youth Organization for Cotton States. At the University of Texas, Joni earned a B.S. in Nursing in 1986 and was elected to the National Nurse’s Honor Society. She was a member of AEPhi sorority and served as the BigLittle Sister Chair. In 1989 she married Jay, a strong supporter of the Jewish community and especially Jewish education. A nurse for Blue Cross Blue Shield, Joni was awarded Outstanding Nurse of the Year in 1992, as well as several other honors in her field. Active with the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW), Joni’s positions have included Vice President of Membership and Vice President of Fundraising. In 2004, Joni received the prestigious NCJW Myra Farr Volunteer Award. Joni and Jay have been active parts of the LCDS family since 1999. Joni began as a room mother and an active Parents Association member. Joni served on the original board of directors, formed when the school became an independent community school in 2002. Funded by a synagogue for forty-two years, LCDS had to start fundraising from ground zero. Over the course of several intense years as an Annual Campaign Chair, Joni has been instrumental in starting a new tradition and culture of giving at LCDS.

Abracadabra Dear Parents & Friends of LCDS, “We can not thank people enough.” Those are the words that have been reiterated by tonight’s honoree Joni Meiselman for as long as I have known Joni. So I want to personally thank each and every one of you for coming to this year’s Annual Event. A very special thank you goes out to Rochelle Finvarb our Event chair and her spectacular committee members for all their effort in making this year’s event a wonderful success. Lastly, I want to thank all of sponsors, underwriters, and auction donors for their contributions. With the current economic crisis facing our country and our community it is wonderful that all of us are able to get together to have some fun, be entertained and support our School. Tonight’s theme “Abracadabra” is all about illusion and magic. Fortunately for the children at Lehrman Community Day School magical things occur every day in the classrooms. We are truly blessed to have the leadership, faculty and staff committed to the School’s Mission of raising our Heroes of the next generation. On behalf of my Family and all those at LCDS we wish to congratulate Joni for being honored here tonight. Through her roles as parent, Annual Fund Chair-Person and Board Member, Joni has been a tremendous advocate of the School and for that we are truly grateful. Through her tireless effort, passion and persistence, she was able and continues to accomplish things no one else can. Joni, we Love you and Thank you! Once again, I thank you all for coming. Please have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing you all next year. Very truly yours, Roger Miller Board Chair

Dear Joni and Jay: While we are all proud of the trajectory of our school, and there is so much to which we can look forward, one of our more pressing challenges has been how to show appreciation to you for your tireless – and continuing – service to our school and students. Thank you for affording us this opportunity to display our gratitude. Our program raises heroes. We offer a spectacular array of platforms that encourage our students to cultivate empathy, develop discipline, solve problems, and participate with peers in building communities of shared values. We are poised to become the first Official Core Knowledge School in Dade and Broward counties (and a Visitation Site)! But building the school we are forming together requires steady infusions of the unflagging energy both of you provide. “Repute is preferable to great wealth, grace is better than silver and gold.” (Proverbs 22:1). Your good name is synonymous with commitment to kehillah. You reflect our community’s spirit and values. You model for us how to combine service with kindness. You honor us with the privilege of joining you in raising your children, Samantha and Evan, who have already absorbed your graciousness. It’s fitting we honor you this evening, given how selflessly you work for our school without seeking recognition. Because of you – and everyone here to rejoice with you – we can now better achieve our goal of forming intelligent human beings ready to live a reflective life of purpose. To each and every person who is here, thank you. To Rochelle Finvarb, Event Chair and the volunteers and staff who planned this evening and then worked relentlessly to carry it off., thank you. We appreciate your individual and collective devotion to nurturing our school. You, along with our honorees, are the agents of taking our school to the place of what can be, for the benefit of our students. Joni and Jay, Mazal Tov – and thank you for making a daily difference in each of our lives. May you always go from strength to strength, in good health. Seth Linfield Head of School

Speech Delivered at the Annual Event

M

any of you here tonight may believe over the years i had a plot to get into your wallets. In reality, when i joined the lehrman day school board of directors, the only committee i did not sign up for was fundraising. However, richard lehrman’s leadership and energy for the school inspired me to embrace his passion and make it mine. I wanted everyone to feel the vision that we both shared. My wish was to improve our academic program, find ways to enhance our facilities, and never deny any jewish child a jewish education. In retrospect, maybe we could all agree it was worth going into your wallets! Thank you for selecting me as your honoree this year. When jay and i enrolled our daughter samantha in 1999, and then evan in 2002, we could never have anticipated how much lcds and all of you would become part of our lives, and a source of so many memorable milestones and special celebrations. I hesitated for all of an instant when asked to accept this honor--the opportunity to thank and honor all of you is a gift i couldn’t refuse. Lcds maintains the highest standards of secular and jewish education because of the efforts of so many! Our goals are met because of your help, your hard work, and the enthusiasm which comes from your heart. First, i would like to thank rochelle finvarb as our event chair, and her committee for this phenomenal evening. The development team of rosalind lanes, sheri seiner, and aarti taubman, who chaired our annual campaign and helped with this magical night; thank you. Andrea schleider,

our development coordinator—we are all grateful for your expertise and support! Andrea and i decided the theme for this year’s campaign would be “spreading our wings”. Lcds is spreading its wings in the community. We are sharing the news of our enriched academic curriculum and student accomplishments in our community newspapers, the lcds web site and of course by word of mouth. Lcds’ relationship with local synagogues has helped us spread our wings too- rabbi glickstein of temple beth shalom and rabbi pearlson and temple menorah. Thank you for being here tonight. We all care about our children’s education and future. We want our children to spread their wings, and hopefully, as rabbi linfield always says, create our future heroes. At lehrman community day school, we can create heroes, because of the lovely, hard working, and dedicated people that make lcds a safe environment which encourages and educates our children. The leadership starts with our awesome board president roger miller, our past president richard lehrman, and our committed board of directors. Our excellent adminstration - rabbi linfield, mrs. Jodi bruce and mrs. Janet rapp. Each and every faculty member, the members of our school office, and, of course, alvaro and harry. As a board member, i can tell you we have a superb team of volunteers; our parent association is the backbone of this school. Amy siama and joi fiske deserve kudos for their devotion and hard work. To all the volunteers and parents: thank you for taking my phone calls—even when caller

id tells you it is me. I can be persistent at times, but our children appreciate your saying “yes”, even when its easier to say “no”. Many of you tonight have come to share in my honor, and i feel so fortunate to have you all in my life- becoming a part of lcds is how i spread my wings. Over the years, my friends in miami are what i call my family. My greatest gift has been working with so many of you through the committee work and programs here at lcds. I always tell people that lcds is not just a school, but the place our children truly call home. I am sorry that my parents, my mentors, could not be here with me tonight. The webster and oxford dictionary have philanthropy underlined with my parents name written in the marginstrue lovers of mankind. They gave me the passion to perform tikkun olam, to make the world a better place; they taught me that my life’s ambition should be to have others share the same opportunities that were given to me. I have tried to fulfill this all of my adult life. I am overwhelmed tonight to have my sister, betsy, my nephew, ben, and my brother-in-law, ken, who have come from far to celebrate this wonderful tribute. I am so fortunate to have my in-laws, toba and barry meiselman, whom i can call mom and dad. You both have been so generous to me, our family, and to lcds. Jay, my best friend and husband. Jay, you are really sharing this honor with me tonight. Your hard work has allowed me the opportunity to volunteer my time to the school and to the other

causes in the community that mean so much to me. People may not realize your kindness, your time, your generosity to lcds….Such as getting a demolition crew to the lcds playground in twenty four hours before a new playground was installed. Jay is the school’s honorary general contractor when we needed things fixed like the air conditioners or bathrooms. He has bought carpet, refrigerators, light fixtures, and the list goes on. The saying goes “behind every great man is a better woman”, but i think in our case, it is reversed! If this were oscar night, hugh jackman would have picked me up off the stage while the music played—because my time would be up (which maybe wouldn’t be such a bad idea, just kidding), but i am almost through, then the real entertainment can begin! Finally, my greatest privilege in life is raising our children—my treasures! Samantha and evan. You are the reason i get up in the morning and choose to volunteer my time here at lcds. In trying to improve your lives, i hope i have helped to improve many other students’ lives, as well. It is not often that you are recognized for a job you love, but i am so passionate about lcds and all the people who are involved here, and here with me tonight. I am so ecstatic to have this recognition, so that i could have the opportunity to say thank you to each and every one of you who keep this school thriving. Let’s keep spreading the news about lcds for many years to come. 20 May 2009

Rabbi Seth Linfield

Head of School, LCDS s so eloquently stated by tonight’s honoree Joni Meisleman. We can’t thank people enough. But tonight we are going to try. First I want to thank you for all being here. We are so pleased by the turnout here tonight and I know we are all going to have a great time. I want to first thank our hosts, Rabbi Pearlson and Tempe Menorah for allowing us to be here tonight. We truly enjoy and value our relationship with the Temple. I want to thank Rochelle Finvarb and her wonderful committee for putting this event together. You guys worked really hard and it shows. Lastly, I want to thank all ofple sponsors, underwriters, and auction donors for their contributions. As I said in my brief introductory letter I believe that LenS is a magical place and magic is created in the class rooms at Lcns each and every day. We are blessed to have the finest teaching staff and administration who love to educate your children and do it with such passion and professionalism. I feel that Lehrman is such a unique and special place that offers the children not only a spectacular education and critical thinking skills but provides them with the moral fortitude that is cultivated through the study Torah and the traditions of our people. Tonight we are here at our Annual Event to celebrate this past wonderful year at LCDS. As you know, our country is currently in one of the worst economic times in decades. And as you also know, many of the Jewish institutions in our community have been drastically effected, many of them pennanently. Institutions like Lehrman must continue if we are to continue as a people so I ask

A

of you to please continue to step up and support us financially through giving and acting as a an advocate for the Magical place in Miami Beach called the Lehnnan Community Day School. We are”so blessed at Lehrman to have so many people care about our school, become active and help lead. We are honoring one of those people here tonight, Joni Meiselmen. I will now ask Richard Lehrman, our previous Board Chair to come up tell us a few words about Joni.

Richard Lehrman

Former Board Chair, LCDS oni was a member of the original board of directors fOl1Iled when Lelmnan Day School became a community school) and she immediately made her presence felt. Funded by a synagogue for 42 years, LCDS had to start fundr.lising from II ground zero,” but that didn’t intimidate Joni. Joni chaired the Aleph Bet campaign - the school’s very first annual campaign - which beatS her imprint to this day. Who could forget the massive Aleph & Bet building blocks (not to mention Gimme~ Daled, Hay, etc.) ascending the lobby, the scripts for the parent-to-parent phone calls, the friendr.1isers and the index card meetings? At the end of her tenn, when any sane person would have ron for the hills) Joni succwnbed to our begging to stay on because her love of the school exceeded even the love of her sanity. But Joni’s most enduring imprint comes from her sweetness - like her signature Goo Goo Ousters from Tennessee. Always mindful of the donor,

J

her mantra was “you can never say ‘thank you’ enough,” although Joni always gave it the college try. It is so integral to her being I have no doubt she mumbles “thank you” in her sleep. Joni’s leadership started a new tr.1dition and culture of giving. No wonder she is affectionately known as the Aleph Bet Goddess.

Roger Miller

Board Chair, LCDS n addition to serving as the Aleph Bet Goddess, Joni was also active in the Parents Association and served on the Board for more than 7 years. But I believe Joni’s most important gift to the school was that she simply cared for the school so much. Joni was never one to hold back her toughts and constantly challenged the Board and administration to do better. Jom was not the only one in the Meiselmen, hbusehold who supported Lehnnan. Together with her husband Jay, they have been sigtuficant contributors to the School annual campaigns and have lead by example. Although Joni is being honored here tonight, we also must thank Jay. Not only has he given us Joni for all these years but Jay for years has worked behind the scenes doing the last minute dirty jobs like his most recent one demolishing the playground without

any compensation or recognition. Jay we can’t thank you enough. Joni, on a personal note, on behalf of my entire family I can say we are very glad you and your family are part of our lives. You and Jay have raised two incredible LeDS schooled kids in Samantha and Evan. After your years of hard work at Lehnnan it is time we finally say to you “We cant th3llk you enough”.

Abracadabra!

The Annual Event was a Magical Moment

The entire school community is still conjuring sweet memories of “Abracadabra,” an evening to benefit the students of LCDS that took place on Wednesday, May 20 at Temple Menorah’s Olemberg Hall. Beyond serving as a wondrous opportunity for the school family to celebrate this year’s successes and enjoy each other’s camaraderie, the event provided a platform to honor Joni Meiselman for her leadership and dedication throughout the years to LCDS, with a special award presented to her by Roger Miller, Board Chair and Richard Lehrman, Immediate Past Board Chair. The evening also included a performance by illusionist, Alan Chamo. Funds raised will enable LCDS to continue to provide our children with the finest faculty and modern learning technologies. In addition, we can continue to offer tuition assistance to deserving children. vcr vsu, - Thank you to Event Chair, Rochelle Finvarb and the Event Committee for their inspired work, and to those who supported the event through sponsorship, participation, and auction and raffle items. It was a night of magic and illusion for Lehrman Community Day School’s 47th annual fundraising event, “Abracadabra,” which took place at Temple Menorah in Miami Beach. The event honored Joni Meiselman, an LCDS parent, for her outstanding leadership, dedication and commitment to the school and hosted a performance by Alan Chamo, a mentalist and illusionist. Rabbi Seth Linfield, head of the school that’s located in Miami Beach, commented on both hosting Chamo and honoring Meiselman. “Having an illusionist perform helps contribute to the spirit of the school’s doing of everything joyfully and joyously,” he said. “As for Joni, she is a mensch, an extraordinary binder among everyone in the community. She gets things done and she inspires others to work with her, whether it’s in Parents Association, in development, or in the needs of our school and students. The event raised more than $60,000 and drew more than

200 people. Funds raised from the event will make it possible for LCDS to continue to provide its children with faculty and modern learning technologies. Roger Miller, the school’s board chair, said the event’s theme was fitting to the institution. “We like to create the magic in Lehrman everyday ad I think that’s what we’re realy here to celebrate, an annual event, where we can look back at the year, celebrate the year, hopefully raise good money and have a good time,” Miller said. Meiselman, whose daughter Samantha is an LCDS alumna and son Evan is in third grade, has been active with her husband Jay at the school since 1999. She began as a room mother and a Parents Association member. She served on the school’s original board of directors and has been its annual campaign chair for several years. She was overwhelmed that her family came for the celebration. “I’m very proud to be a parent here because everybody is so warm and they made it very

special for me to be here,” Meiselman said when asked to comment on her honor. “I’m thrilled because it’s a good opportunity to say thank you to everyone that’s here.” The event was the first time Chamo peformed for a school fundraising event. He said there was no compariosn between the evening’s performance and others in his career. “I’ve had many different shows, bigger shows, live in front of millions of people, but here I’m performing with people who many of them know each

other,” he said. “I think it’s a good environment. It’s definitely a good thing to perform for the community.” One of the highlights from Chamo’s performance was a hypnosis where he brought several people on stage to hypnotize them. Andy Fiske, an LCDS parent, said the experience was very relaxing. “It was sort of a warm feeling running through your body,” he said. “I really felt alone up there and if I wasn’t in a room knowing there were people watching, I’d be totally out of it.”
