Dear LCDS Family, In his inaugural address, President Obama declared, “This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.” The President, whose speeches show an immersion in Biblical motifs, must have been studying this week’s portion of Va’era, which focuses on choosing to respond to God’s voice. The parsha begins with God’s reaffirming His promises and the mission of Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egypt. (Exodus 6:2-13). Moses proceeds to join with Aaron to confront Pharaoh. In comparison, before the seventh plague, Moses warns the Egyptians of the impending hail. The Egyptians “who feared the Lord’s word” brought their slaves and livestock indoors to safety (9:20). Contraposed to those who feared God were not those who challenged God with fierce philosophical arguments; rather, they were “those who paid no regard,” (9:21), that is, who were apathetic, consumed by life’s daily distractions. The reflexive ignoring of Divine demands on the conscience so dulled their sensitivities that they lost the capacity to care for their slaves as fellow human beings and other living creatures, leaving them in the open. As we pray for the success of the new administration – a prayer grounded in ancient tradition (see Babylonian Talmud, Avodah Zarah 4a) – may we have the strength and skills to understand, and to inspire others to discern, God’s call within all of our ways. Shabbat Shalom. Rabbi Seth Linfield, Head of School

IBNews: Middle Years Programme

This week, the International Baccalaureate Organization granted our request for candidate status!. This is a significant step on our path to authorization as an IB World School offering the Middle Years Programme (MYP). IB World schools share a common philosophy: a commitment to the high quality, challenging, international education that we believe is critical for our students in the 21st century. For further information about the IB and its programs, visit www.ibo.org. Yasher Koach to Cynthia Day, our MYP Coordinator (and Math chair), and our middle school faculty on reaching this milestone. The true congratulations go to our students, for what MYP will enable us to offer to them as we prepare them for higher education and for life.

Home Schooling

This Sunday, Rabbi Seth and Deana Linfield are hosting Rabbi Ethan Tucker, who will teach a special lesson on “Torah and Mitzvot: The Burdens and Beauty of Freedom.” Rabbi Tucker is a founder of Yeshivat Hadar, the first full-time egalitarian yeshiva in North America. Don’t miss this opportunity to be inspired as you start the week: Sunday, Jan. 25, 10:30 a.m. at the Linfields’ home, , 4600 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach.

Inauguration Day 2009 by Sam Kainen, Grade 5

For a long time in our history, AfricanAmericans were harassed and mistreated. Now every person in the United States has equal rights, and with the election of Barack Obama, we have a Black president. On Inauguration Day, my classmates watched the big event on the school’s Smart Boards. I went with my family to Liberty City, a neighborhood in Miami with primarily Black residents. We went to Jumbo’s, a restaurant that in the 1960s was one of the first restaurants in Florida to allow people of different races to eat together. People were so thrilled to watch Barack Obama take the oath of office for President of the United States. It was wonderful to see everyone’s reactions to Barack Obama’s swearing-in.
