Dear LCDS Families: Welcome back! Our faculty and staff prepared all summer for your child. We are almost ready! We hired more dynamic teachers, introduced a pathbreaking curricula, grown by three new grades (in a strategic alliance with Tauber Academy), and “created” additional learning spaces to accommodate our growing enrollment. Your child will now experience the tangible benefits of the strategic planning we undertook last year. Yet while our School’s academic profile has been transformed, the important things remain the same: everyone at LCDS will still know your child’s name…and inspire your child to be a hero. There is no single blueprint for raising a hero, though we believe that the critical path includes teaching a child how to learn, encouraging critical thinking, strengthening character, and involving students in larger cohorts and communities. This upcoming week, as teachers put the finishing touches on classrooms and undertake professional training, we celebrate Rosh Chodesh, welcoming the month of Elul. At this time in our calendar cycle we take stock of where we have been and where we are going, in preparation for the impending New Year. Carrying the banner of “Education for Life,” six of our educational staff traveled to Israel under the auspices of the local CAJE (Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education) and the Jewish Agency for Israel: four ECD teachers—Erica Albert, Naama Bashan, Grettel Thompson, and Jennifer Reiz; Kindergarten teacher Betsy Levy; and Assistant Head of School and Dean of Primary and Elementary Education Jodi Mishcon Bruce. All had been studying for two years with Kesher L’Yisrael—Connection to Israel—leading up to the trip: a handson experience enabling them to bring Israel into the classroom. The ten day,

Dear Parents, Now I know how Alice must have felt in Wonderland. One day I went off to Israel with five of my colleagues to learn all we could about the Israeli approach to early childhood education. When we returned from that wonderful adventure, I was faced with an entirely new challenge; the responsibility for the K-5 division of our school. It is a challenge I accept with a great deal of anticipation, respect, and love. I anticipate wonderful days ahead for your children with the physical and academic changes you will see at LCDS this year. I respect the educators who have worked on those changes and those who will be working with me and your children to make LCDS an even better institution. I always tell anyone who has the patience to listen, how much I loved Lehrman from the first day I interviewed; I loved the kids, their parents, and the people I work with. was for specific staff development: to be trained in the implementation of TaL AM, the stepped and sequenced Hebrew and Jewish studies curriculum that will be introduced in the first and second grades. After intensive, full days of study, they spent time with the TaL AM consultants, discussing LCDS and the students they knew to make sure they would be applying their lessons correctly. The three returned home to Miami Beach exhausted, yet exhilarated and ready to go. Halav U’D’vash is another new Hebrew curriculum that will be implemented this year, this time in Pre-K and Kindergarten (or ““gan” as they say in Israel). Pazia Sela, who will be training teachers at a workshop to be held in September in Fort Lauderdale. LCDS will be sending three teachers to that workshop: Rachel Gozlan who will teach the program to Pre-K students, Dora Levkovitz, new to LCDS (see Changes) and Ayala. Karen Alvarez and Jodi Mishcon Bruce will continue with their second year of studies at the Melton Adult Mini-School. The entire LCDS general studies faculty participated in three days of staff development sessions with Core Knowledge trainers in May in preparation for the implementation of the Core Knowledge curriculum this fall. Those long sessions on the rationale of the scope and sequence of the curriculum, as well as the methodology of the lesson planning, allowed the teachers to prepare their lessons for the 2007-2008 school year. In February there will be continuing Core Knowledge staff development. ● Executive Director Janet Rapp and Security Director Alvaro Sanchez attended a two-part security conference sponsored by the Police Department and the ADL. Session One was held Wednesday, August 15 at the Miami Beach Police Department. The second session, sponsored by ADL on Thursday, August 16, was held at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.

Dear LCDS Families: Welcome back! Our faculty and staff prepared all summer for your child. We are almost ready! We hired more dynamic teachers, introduced a pathbreaking curricula, grown by three new grades (in a strategic alliance with Tauber Academy), and “created” additional learning spaces to accommodate our growing enrollment. Your child will now experience the tangible benefits of the strategic planning we undertook last year. Yet while our School’s academic profile has been transformed, the important things remain the same: everyone at LCDS will still know your child’s name…and inspire your child to be a hero. There is no single blueprint for raising a hero, though we believe that the critical path includes teaching a child how to learn, encouraging critical thinking, strengthening character, and involving students in larger cohorts and communities. This upcoming week, as teachers put the finishing touches on classrooms and undertake professional training, we celebrate Rosh Chodesh, welcoming the month of Elul. At this time in our calendar cycle we take stock of where we have been and where we are going, in preparation for the impending New Year. A Learning Community
Carrying the banner of “Education for Life,” six of our educational staff traveled to Israel under the auspices of the local CAJE (Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education) and the Jewish Agency for Israel: four ECD teachers—Erica Albert, Naama Bashan, Grettel Thompson, and Jennifer Reiz; Kindergarten teacher Betsy Levy; and Assistant Head of School and Dean of Primary and Elementary Education Jodi Mishcon Bruce. All had been studying for two years with Kesher L’Yisrael—Connection to Israel—leading up to the trip: a handson experience enabling them to bring Israel into the classroom. The ten day,

Dear Parents, Now I know how Alice must have felt in Wonderland. One day I went off to Israel with five of my colleagues to learn all we could about the Israeli approach to early childhood education. When we returned from that wonderful adventure, I was faced with an entirely new challenge; the responsibility for the K-5 division of our school. It is a challenge I accept with a great deal of anticipation, respect, and love. I anticipate wonderful days ahead for your children with the physical and academic changes you will see at LCDS this year. I respect the educators who have worked on those changes and those who will be working with me and your children to make LCDS an even better institution. I always tell anyone who has the patience to listen, how much I loved Lehrman from the first day I interviewed; I loved the kids, their parents, and the people I work with. was for specific staff development: to be trained in the implementation of TaL AM, the stepped and sequenced Hebrew and Jewish studies curriculum that will be introduced in the first and second grades. After intensive, full days of study, they spent time with the TaL AM consultants, discussing LCDS and the students they knew to make sure they would be applying their lessons correctly. The three returned home to Miami Beach exhausted, yet exhilarated and ready to go. Halav U’D’vash is another new Hebrew curriculum that will be implemented this year, this time in Pre-K and Kindergarten (or ““gan” as they say in Israel).
