Dear LCDS Family, One of the many benefits of living here in America’s Riviera is the opportunity to be at Dolphins Stadium next week to witness the start the Brett Favre era for the New York Jets, the team I have rooted for since I was younger than most of our students. Neither team will be strapping on their uniforms for the first time that day. Each will have played four preseason games - and that just scratches the surface of their preparation. As explained by ESPN’s Mark Clayton, “Players train year round…Gone are the days when vets came to camp to get in shape.” http://xrl.us/oot6f [ESPN.com 5.21.08] We, too, are training for an Opening Day called Rosh Hashanah. This Shabbat, we bless the new month of Elul, with Rosh Chodesh celebrated on Sunday and Monday. Each weekday morning during Elul (except for the day before Rosh Hashanah), our students will be blowing the shofar. As the 12th Century philosopher Maimonides taught, the shofar blasts awaken us from our normal neglectful somnambulism into a searing scrutiny of our actions. Much as even a golden-armed quarterback needs to sweat over many days to get in game shape, so do each of us need the full month to reflect honestly, to seek forgiveness and to forgive, and to set stretch goals for the New Year. Preparation is what LCDS is about – preparing young men and women over time to mature into resilient college students and then adults. Our goals as an academic community were confirmed in a recent report from an independent commission of thirty-three scientists, pediatricians and mental health professionals, including such luminaries as Drs. Brazelton, Linn and Poussaint of Harvard Medical School. The commission’s principal investigator is Dr. Kathleen Kovner Kline of Dartmouth Medical School. See Hardwired to Connect: The New Scientific Case for Authoritative Communities. CDs of this report are available in the school office. Evidence from modern neuroscience shows that a child’s brain structure and functioning are “hardwired to connect,” in a developmental pattern, both to other
Uniform Knowledge…
Do Kindergarten & grade 1 students change for PE? No, Kindergarten and 1st grade students do not change for PE; they wear the regular uniform throughout the day. May I return the PE uniforms purchased for students in Kindergarten and 1st grade? Yes. In Unison Kids will be happy to accept the return. What do students wear on Spirit Day (Thursdays)? All students may wear a PE t-shirt with the regular uniform bottom (not PE shorts). On PE days, may your child wear the PE uniform to school? If your children have PE prior to lunch, they may come to school in the PE uniform and then will change into the regular uniform at lunch time. If they have PE after lunch, they should come to school in the regular uniform and change into the PE uniform at lunch time. Must tops, bottoms & outerwear have the LCDS logo? Yes. All uniforms purchased from In Unison Kids will have the LCDS logo. Available on the web lehrmanschool.org/LL

people and to sources of transcendent moral and spiritual meaning. Human brains are organized to ask ultimate questions and to draw meaning from experience. Interfering with that wiring, according to the report, materially increases the risks of mental, emotional and behavioral problems. To influence your child’s wellbeing, the commission vigorously advocates giving your child (and yourself ) the blessing of participating in an “authoritative” community. What makes for an authoritative [not authoritarian!] community? An authoritative community (or authoritative social institution) is a group that lives connectedness. I hope key elements sound to you like our school’s mission statement (available on our Web site, lehrmanschool.org/ mission, and what your child experiences daily in practice. To paraphrase the Hardwired to Connect report, an authoritative community is a society which treats children as ends in themselves, with each child nurtured and deemed worthy of intensive attention; an environment that establishes, for each participant, high expectations and clear limits; a fellowship of shared concentration on values and spiritual development; a place where adults – faculty, staff, parents and grandparents – model leading a heroic life, replete with ideals and purpose; and a citadel of long-term focus. We at LCDS strive daily for nothing less than to create the intellectual constructs, emotional competencies and social scaffolding that shape a person of character. Both our timeless Torah and classic Core Knowledge curriculum teach loving your neighbor and respecting the dignity of all persons (including yourself!). As a student progresses through LCDS, we seek to “moralize” and then “spiritualize” attachment. An LCDS education is preparation for life, by cultivating an authentic sense of self and place and developing one’s personality to be a literate and ethical citizen. As we educate and raise our children together, may we be privileged to enjoy a Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov, a good month. Seth Linfield, Head of School May students wear last year’s uniforms? Yes. Uniforms purchased from M & D Kidz, our previous vendor, may be worn this year even though some uniforms may not have the LCDS logo. Are students permitted to wear open-toe shoes? No. All students are required to wear closed shoes. May we layer clothing under uniforms? No, with the exception of cold days. What is the uniform for Shabbat? For girls: navy blue princess skort or navy blue pleated skirt with white ribbed polo. For boys: navy blue trousers with the white oxford shirt. Is monograming allowed, other than the school logo? No. The only acceptable monogram is the LCDS logo. Are crocs or heelies permitted? No…and Yes. Heelies are not permitted. Students K- 5 may wear Crocs. Must Middle School students wear uniforms? Yes. MS students are required to wear LCDS uniforms.
