Dear LCDS Family, When do you look forward to four days in cold, windy Skokie, Illinois? When you are privileged to attend the Mandel Teacher Educator Institute (MTEI) Conference! Having just returned, I want to share the excitement I felt interacting with colleagues from around the country. The goal of MTEI is to create a cadre of educators working collaboratively on the design and implementation of innovative learning opportunities. It is a two-year program that includes six sessions combining the study of Jewish and general educational concepts and resources, focusing on two essential questions: • What forms of Jewish teaching and learning are we trying to foster? • What types of faculty development will foster this teaching and learning? The program delves into three areas and their interrelationships: • teaching and learning; • Jewish content; and • professional development of teachers in Jewish settings. A critical part of the MTEI program is designing professional development opportunities that reflect the questions we explore and the new approaches we develop. The content and sessions were of the highest quality and the discussions with colleagues enriched my fields of view on supporting professional development. It was tremendously satisfying to hear leaders from other schools comment on how Lehrman Community Day School is recognized nationally as being an advanced professional learning community, committed to providing sophisticated opportunities for faculty development. Now we will be even stronger! Shabbat Shalom. Jodi Bruce Dean of Education
