Dear LCDS Family, We are so excited to release the plans for our new playground, specially designed for our ECD – Grade 1 students. Beyond the incredible equipment, such as tunnels, slides, climbers and a new-model toddler center, we will be focusing on experiential play. For example, easels will allow students to continue to create beyond the classroom; should a child one day feel like painting (or employing shaving cream), those choices will be available. We will provide tools to dig, plant and explore. Blocks will also be available for creating individual or collaborative masterpieces, however temporary. We are thrilled to be able to provide our students with outdoor activities and hands-on experiences daily. We expect our playground to be ready for our students after winter break. To each of you who are participating in making this dream come true for our youngest students (now and in the future), thank you. Shabbat Shalom. Jodi Bruce Jennifer Reiz

Last week I attended the IB (International Baccalaureate) workshop for Language in Denver, Colorado. It was an extraordinary experience in which I leamed a lot about this wonderful and challenging program, the MYP (Middle Years Program). It was gratifying to realize that our Hebrew Language Program, “NETA”, is so closely aligned with the IB philosophy. In addition, I had the interesting experience of meeting second language teachers, from throughout North America, who teach Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, French, German, Russian, and Arabic. I leamed about their teaching styles and challenges. After collaborating with these other teachers, I came to appreciate further how lucky we are here at LCDS in the language opportunities we are able to offer to our students. Calling All LCDS Grandparents & Friends! Take Advantage of an Extraordinary Opportunity

On October 3, 2008, President Bush signed into law the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, an extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover. The extension is retroactive, applying to distributions made in the 2008 and 2009 tax years. The extension will allow individuals 70 ½ years and older to donate up to $100,000 from their IRAs to LCDS tax-free. Before this law was enacted, IRA withdrawals were treated as taxable income. Don’t miss out on this opportunity! Transfers for 2008 must be completed by December 31, 2008. Transfers for 2009 must be completed by December 31, 2009. For further information, and to find out how your IRA gift can benefit LCDS, please contact me at 305-866-2771 x17. Thank you. Andrea Schleider Director of Donor Relations
