Dear LCDS Family, Whichever politico first advised “don’t get mad, get even” (sometimes ascribed to Robert Kennedy) did not serve on Joseph’s palace staff. In this week’s portion of VaYehi, after their father Jacob dies, Joseph’s brothers are afraid that Joseph will now enslave them. But Joseph chooses not to do so, following the injunction against taking vengeance or bearing a grudge (Leviticus 19:18), and instead reassures them that even if their father can no longer protect them, Joseph’s understanding of the moral behavior God demands precludes him from doing anything other than sustaining them and their children (Genesis 50: 20-21). His answer preserves the twelve tribes and sets the basis for the unity that will soon be needed to face the burdens of slavery and effect the ultimate redemption from Egypt. But is it really possible for a human being to show such self-control? Our education here at LCDS—and modern research— responds with a resounding yes! A recent NY Times article presents a peek at research by two University of Miami psychologists, who conclude that religiosity promotes selfcontrol, and it is this self-control that significantly predicts success in school and marriage—and overall health and happiness. According to Dr. Michael McCullough, “the self-control effect seems to come from being engaged in religious institutions and behaviors.” For Good Self-Control, Try Getting Religious About It, NYTimes, 12.30.08. This self-control effect is different from what animates a person’s relationships with God and Man, e.g., being commanded, love, fear, experience, or reason. Those are the subjects of intense inquiries which we engage with in our students in increasingly sophisticated ways as they mature. A LCDS education prepares the young men and women in our charge to be ready to answer—in ways in which you and your parents would be proud—upon reaching the large and small inflection points in each of their lives. The deep intellectual immersions we offer each mind is not enough; rather, the ethics of the heart matter as much, and this commitment is reflected in what happens in our LCDS community daily. Shabbat Shalom. Rabbi Seth Linfield, Head of School

muffinstruction
ECD Directors Learn at Lehrman Greater Miami early childhood professionals met at LCDS for a muffinstruction session— an opportunity to share ideas and breakfast— with colleagues. Speaker for the event was Dr. Lilia DiBello, Assistant Professor, Adrian Dominican School of Education at Barry University. Dr. DiBello led a hands-on session on Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Education. muffinstruction (a seldom used word combining breakfast and learning) was also an opportunity to showcase LCDS to feeder schools. Our very own experts were in attendance— kindergarten teachers Ms. Grettel and Mrs. T.
