Dear LCDS Family, Our early re-enrollment period is closing and our surprisingly strong numbers suggest that you look at this special place from the same lenses as I do. Twenty years ago, I dedicated myself to the profession of education, from a young person’s zeal to make a difference in the lives of others. Although I left the daily classroom six years ago, I wake up each morning with the same passion – no, make that an even greater one. I have had the unique opportunity to work with the faculty, students and families of LCDS for six years so far, all of which has had a profound impact on me as a professional. For me, LCDS is special for so many reasons: • In our classrooms, I see first grade students studying landmarks around the world, third grade students enjoying a tea party after reading Alice in Wonderland, fifth grade students analyzing the feudal period of Japanese history and middle school students dissecting pig brains. Our school’s serious application of the Core Knowledge Curriculum and allied programs is special. • Gathering as a community each morning to begin each day with the experience of Tefillah, then living the rest of the day filled with Jewish values, as each student affirms his or her sense of self and purpose and dignity is special. • There are children who began schooling at LCDS speaking English as a second language who today excel in our classrooms and communicate beautifully with extensive vocabularies in many languages with their teachers and peers. Seeing that happen over a relatively short period is special. • Everyday I get to see children whose parents I grew up with and went to school and summer camp with. I have attended many of our students’ parents’ weddings, birthday parties and baby namings. Continuing to watch their children grow and mature each day is special. • Our school offers a focused environment allowing professionals to guide your child as he or she moves from early childhood through middle school and that is special. Truly special will be seeing our toddlers today as our community high school’s graduating class of 2023. • Watching LCDS alumni continuing the legacy by sending their children to LCDS is special. As you each have your own special moments accumulating over the years you know the list could continue on and on, but our school is not special by chance: people make places special and you are the people. Step Right Up!
Our K, first, second, and third graders had the opportunity to experience “A Day in the Life” of their respective upperclassmen. On Tuesday, “Step Up Day” found our kindergarteners in first grade, our first graders in second grade…you get the idea. We trust you paid attention to the instruction card when your student arrived home!

Children’s Progress
Dear Pre-K, 1st & 2nd Grade Parents, The Children’s Progress is a computer-based, interactive assessment of achievement in literacy, language arts and mathematics. This childfriendly and accurate assessment is administered three times a year for students in Pre-K through Grade Two. Below is the schedule for the winter administration of the Children’s Progress. • Second Annual Movie Night:
Officer Julio Blanco from the Miami Beach Police Department conducted an internet safety presentation for students in grades 3-7, emphasizing how to be cautious and intelligent when venturing on the Web.
Tu bi-Shevat is coming! Following tefillah on Mon., Feb. 9—the 15th of Shevat, students will hold a tree planting ceremony. Each student will receive a bag of dried fruits, lovingly packed by our middle schoolers. Remember for each student to bring in $1.00 for our Memorial Garden in Israel.
Camp Rock. Thursday, February 12 (no school Friday!) Pizza, popcorn and a movie on the court. Lots of fun! • Family Fun Day (formerly Lehrman Olympics): Walk-a-thon, obstacle courses, parent/ kid/teacher events, craft stations. LCDS kindergarten students paid “wrapped” attention as Rabbi Linfield visited their Jewish Studies class to explain, and demonstrate, the mitzvah of tefillin.
Attorney Tracy Moret coaches Mrs. Fein’s fourth grade students (including niece Rebecca Fiske) in formal debate. She helped students prepare their arguments for the upcoming topic, “Robin Hood: Criminal or Hero.” Parents then attended the debate on January 30. We regret to inform you that the three young children of our school’s groundskeeper, Hector Serrano, were killed this past Sunday when an SUV crushed the back of their minivan. We transmit our heartfelt sympathies to Mr. and Mrs. Serrano on this great loss. To help the family in the time of bereavement, we are collecting funds toward defraying funeral and burial expenses. You may wish to bring a check or cash to the school, in any amount, which we will aggregate and deliver to the Serranos. All checks should be addressed to: The Serrano Family Funeral Funds. Janet Rapp is the treasurer for this effort. We will convey to the family our lament and prayers as a school community.
