LCDS Yearbook 2007-2008•5768
Our Journey
Miami Beach • 2007-2008 • 5768 • j"xa,
Our journey through the school year.
As a component of the Core Knowledge Curriculum, our third graders studied the Earliest Americans in their American history unit. To complement this unit, students created “story skins” in their visual arts class. “Story skins” were used by the Plains Indians as a means of recording history. Many Plains tribes depicted special events on a buffalo hide or “story skin.” The Lakota people referred to their hide paintings as “Winter Counts.” Each winter the tribal historian would reflect on the previous year and record what he felt were the most important events. We hope this Yearbook helps you reflect on, and enjoy, your past year at LCDS.
Lehrman Community Day School is a Jewish academic community formed around a pluralistic, covenantal, coeducational, college-preparatory day school. We prepare motivated young men and women to live heroically, as reflective Jews and responsible American citizens in a global economy. Our ideal graduate lives a life of purpose and heartfelt dreams, animated by moral character and intellectual discovery. Within a family ambience, we celebrate each student’s whole uniqueness and embrace critical thinking, faith and discipline as essential elements of an educated conscience. Each student becomes steeped in the intelligences, skills and values relevant to the following signature commitments that inform the daily learning environment: mastering the arts and sciences through inquiry, experience and collaboration vacfu .rtv ,t utknu engaging in a relationship with God vsucg participating in prayer vkhp, studying Torah and applying a pluralistic spirit to the great issues of Jewish life and thought vru, sunk, identifying with and respecting Jews of all movements and being involved in the life of the Jewish community ktrah kkf demonstrating love for all humans ,uhrcv ,cvt doing mitzvot and social action okug iue, advancing Israel’s central role for the Jewish people ktrah ,cvt and creating a sustainable spiritual and physical environment for our children’s children vrnaku vscgk. j"xa, iuhx s"f Dear LCDS Student: As illustrated in the pages of this Yearbook, this has been an extraordinary year in your growth and development. Each of you has been blessed with the luck to be born into families with values. Your families have in turn chosen to offer you the opportunity to come here to LCDS to train to be a hero. You are a hero when you can listen to another human being and sincerely empathize. You are a hero when you can draw upon a range of meaningful texts and experiences to address a new issue, technological or otherwise, unimagined by your grandparents. You are a hero when you develop your critical and creative faculties, so as to be ready to contribute meaningfully in any chosen endeavor. You are a hero when you feel a special closeness with Israel, to the generation of the Shoah and to your place in the world now and in history. You are a hero when you can simultaneously be self-confident and humble. And you are a hero because you honor your parents and grandparents who have made this possible for you.
/kfc wovrct-,t lrc 'vu ohnhc tc wiez ovrctu And (Genesis 24:1) – in the same light that God blessed
Abraham, the faculty and staff pray for blessings upon you in all things. There is no generation gap here: your families have honored our traditions by placing you on the highway to being a hero and we are privileged to provide some direction.
So enjoy these pictures in virtual space, as we await your returning to our physical campus – as an empowered student or graduate – to continue contributing to the spirit and vitality of our community. We’ll always be here to support you and to love you. Rabbi Seth Linfield, Head of School
