The creation of Downtown Market has been a long-held dream, with its origins tracing back four years, when the owners initially envisioned Bodega 1205 itself being a real downtown market for picking up daily foodstuffs - fitting, as “bodega” means store or market in Spanish. Though Bodega 1205 has blossomed into a bustling brunch location, it is Cesar and his wife Jossy’s dream to still see their market become a reality.

A Culinary Experience Worth the Drive

Letter from the Publisher

N ature always wears the colors of the spirit” - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Welcome dear reader, to another wonderful edition of our humble magazine.

For the month of July, we embrace the profound love for nature that resonates in the hearts of countless individuals. As Ralph Waldo Emerson beautifully encapsulates in the quote above, nature has the remarkable ability to reflect and inspire the depths of our spirit.

It is with great pleasure that we present an array of articles that celebrate our city, featuring local artists, entrepreneurs and the folks who just make it happen, all while staying true to their roots and showing others how to do it and have fun at the same time.

Summers in the south are for fishing, lake-living, mudding, music festivals and art crawls; they’re for warm nights filled with great food, good friends and plenty of porch sittin’ (with your favorite beverage in hand of course).

This month, we feature local artist Adleyn Scott. Her thought-provoking story, written by Natalie Downey, showcases her exceptional talent, and we are thrilled to share her work and life experience here. Have fun with local musician Jonboy Storey as he blazes a trail of lyrics and fun across the southeast with his bandmates. Take a stroll through graceful fields of the prettiest flowers you’ve ever seen with Brianne Womack and her beautiful family as she encourages and uplifts women and the caretakers at her farm, Fields of Grace. Take a moment for yourself and for your community for restoration and rejuvenation with Nedda and her amazing team at Aglow Apothecary + Healing Haven in Old Town.

After that, make sure you taste all of what the region has to offer. This month, we have two great options: the flavor creations by Chef David at Criolla restaurant near Ladonia, and the new Downtown Market brought to us by our friends at Bodega 1205, opening in July in the heart of the city.

If you’ve picked up this magazine, you’re halfway there. All you gotta do is peruse our calendar of events and pick a few to check out. There’s plenty of fun coming up and it’s all right here. Triathlons, summer camps, mixers, mingles, music festivals, crafts, yoga, exhibits, grand openings – you name, we got it.

Whatever you do, enjoy the nature we have abundantly here in the South. From the Chattahoochee River, to the trails in Pine Mountain, just make sure there’s shade and drink lots of water. If you wind up finding your way to a boat on the lake, let me know. I’ll pitch in on the gas and ice.

Jonboy Storey

Tradition, Innovation, & Real Country Music

L ocal artist Jonboy Storey exudes that southern charm bred of a true country upbringing. He believes that is what makes the music he creates so impactful - “I think the fact that I’m living in the Deep South, immersed in it

but this one is going to be less ballads and more upbeat songs.” He chuckles, saying, “My dad started listening to a bunch of my songs, and told me that I’m a male version of Taylor Swift, so this one is going to be a little different.” He remains true to his songwriting roots, clarifying that “You always want to tell a story with a song, but we want to write something you can ride down the road and party to.”

Inspired by artists like Morgan Wallen who are expanding the genre with their approach to lyricism and inflection, Storey is seeking his own unique lane in the industry. “The way country music is changing right now, there’s a lot of creative freedom. You always try to stick with that traditional country sound, but we’re trying to find a different lane to go in.”

With his soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, Storey has captivated audiences across the region. “One thing that I’ll say about my music is that it comes from experience, something that’s happened to me. It helps whatever situation you’re in, being able

One of the most rewarding aspects of Storey’s musical journey is witnessing the connection between his original songs and the audience. There is an undeniable thrill when fans sing his songs back to him during live performances. “It’s kinda cliche,” he says, “But there’s nothing better than people coming to your shows and knowing your songs.” This connection between artist and audience creates an electrifying atmosphere, where music becomes a mutually validating, shared experience.

His latest release, a track called “Good To Be Back,” reflects on a fleeting relationship fostered with a girl he met

while duck hunting in Arkansas. “It ended up not working out, and I wasn’t heartbroken, but I just had some lyrics come into my head on the way back home from Arkansas. It was pretty much done by the end of the drive. I brought it to my band, and my bass player Josh Buckley helped me finish it.”

Storey highlights the significance of his bandmates— Buckley, as well as lead guitarist Ben Castro and drummer Brandon Hudson—who have been part of his musical journey for the past two years. The addition of these talented musicians has elevated Storey’s sound and opened doors to exciting opportunities, including opening for renowned artists including Chris Janson at the Phenix City Amphitheater, Trey Lewis, Brooks & Dunn, and Hardy. He also frequently plays Flora-Bama, in Pensacola.

While Storey’s dedication to music is evident, he emphasizes that there are three fundamental pillars that shape his life. First and foremost, his Christian faith serves as a guiding force in his personal and professional endeavors. Secondly, his family plays an indispensable role in his growth and stability, providing unwavering support and a solid foundation. Finally, Storey cherishes the genuine connections he has forged. “I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by good hearted and sincere people,” he says.

every day, makes me able to stay true to it. I’m doing the same things that the people who listen to country music are doing,” he says.

Having grown up playing in the youth band at the Bear Creek Baptist Church, he attributes his transition into the country music scene to his father. “My dad was always a big country fan,” he explains, “I grew up listening to that kind of music, and after learning a couple of country songs, I performed in the 8th grade talent show.” He honed his skills and started performing at local restaurants and private parties at the tender age of 16, laying the foundation for a promising career.

Now almost 26, Storey has been releasing singles for the past three years. His next project, currently in the works, will be an EP or small album. “We’re still in the writing process,

to write about it - even if you go through something bad, at least you get a song.” Whether it’s heartbreak or other challenges, the act of putting pen to paper and transforming personal struggles into melodic tales provides catharsis for Storey, and relatable narratives that resonate deeply with his listeners.

His favorite song that he’s written is called “Thank You For The Doubt,” which is based on a conversation he had with his high school wrestling coach. “He asked me if I really liked playing music, and I said yes. He told me, ‘Jonboy, you may enjoy playing music, but you’re going to be driving nails into a house for the rest of your life.’”

“Thank You For The Doubt” was actually written with sincere gratitude, for the inspiration and the challenge that ignited that fire inside him.

Jonboy Storey’s rise in the southern country music scene showcases his passion, determination, and commitment to his craft. Through his songs, he finds solace and a means to connect with his audience on a deeper level. Storey’s ability to transform personal experiences into relatable and heartfelt lyrics is a testament to his authenticity as an artist. With his infectious melodies and heartfelt storytelling, Jonboy Storey is poised to leave an indelible mark on the country music landscape, captivating listeners far and wide with his unique blend of tradition and innovation.

His music is on all listening platforms, and he is on social media wherever it may be found - @jonboystorey. u

ArtistSpotlight

Life is a series of self-discoveries, each twist in the path leading to new possibilities. Local artist Adleyn Scott discovered her love for creating art after retirement, and hasn’t let the narrative of time keep her from fully immersing herself in her newfound passion.

Adleyn Scott wasn’t always an artist. Or, at least, she didn’t always know she was. For 21 years she taught elementary school, and, with a masters degree in piano and organ, used her music

Adleyn says. She knew learning to draw and paint would take time, too.

As Adleyn navigated the world of grief, she found that art was therapeutic, opening up a safe place in which she could immerse herself. “It takes you back to a time when that’s all you had to worry about - shapes and colors,” Adleyn recalls, explaining how art made her feel like a child again. “Art can be very calming and rewarding. It helps because when you’re painting, you’re only focusing on the art.”

With the belief that people should be lifelong learners, Adleyn didn’t think twice about her age as she curiously let herself be led down the path life had opened up for her. In her early 60s, she began reaching out to other artists, connecting in art groups, and fully immersing herself in the world of brushes, paints, and

she was focusing on painting at the moment. Seeking out new people to meet and places to go to learn about art, Adleyn made new friends at workshops, through social media, and at the art shows she participates in. She now serves as the Vice President of the Columbus Artists’ Guild, which brings artists together for fellowship and learning.

“It’s a blessing in your life you weren’t counting on,” Adleyn explains. “It keeps you busy, brings new friends, new places to go. It’s a journey.”

Today, Adleyn has made a name for herself as a skilled artist, her brightly-colored paintings in an impressionist style adding beauty to the walls of the world around her. Curious, explorative, and free, Adleyn loves to try new things in her work. She admires other artists, and is always open to learning from them. Her style is all about color and light, and she often paints beautiful floral arrangements reminiscent of Van Gogh. One of her trademark offerings is watercolor inspirational bookmarks, breathtakingly beautiful and yet simple and approachable. She has recently begun experimenting with painting on denim jackets, and has enjoyed exploring finger painting as well.

For Adleyn, making art is a mindset. “So what if you paint something that isn’t good,” she laughs. “You have to be willing to fail as you learn something new.” Her journey through grief and art have taught her that each season might have a different shape, but it’s all adding color and movement to the tapestry telling the story of her life.

Adleyn’s art can be viewed in various places around town and on the internet. She has a display in the Bo Bartlett center that will be up until August 15. In October, she will participate in an exhibit at the Columbus Library along with 120 other artists.

skills playing at church events and weddings on the side.

After many years, Adleyn experienced a traumatic event, which led to her searching for a creative outlet for her pain. “I needed something to decorate the wall of grief,” she explains.

Adleyn took an interest in art, something she hadn’t paid much attention to before. “I didn’t think I could be an artist, but I could still enjoy it,” Adleyn recalls, telling herself, “If I can hold a pencil, I can draw something.”

Adleyn began exploring art tutorials on YouTube, reading books about art techniques, and practicing on her own. She took a fundamental drawing class first, using only pencil and paper to practice, before adding in new materials and colors. Her background in music proved to be valuable as she learned art. “You’re not going to play an instrument well the first time,”

canvas, even exploring new modalities such as finger painting. “It opened up a whole new world for me,” she remembers.

As a lifelong musician, Adleyn had learned important lessons about mastering a skill. “All it takes is perseverance,” she says. “If you really want to do it, you have to put in the practice, just like with the piano.” She believes that anyone can learn a new skill at any age if they want to. “How bad do you want to learn,” Adleyn says with a smile. “A lot of it has to do with passion. You have to keep trying, have to love the process. And, you have to start at the beginning.”

What Adleyn found in the world of art was an opportunity to discover a new part of herself. She began to see the world with new eyes, recalling, “I saw things that had been around me my whole life in a new way.” Adleyn also began diving deeper into learning about the subjects of her art - trees, pansies, whatever

Adleyn’s one goal as an artist is to keep learning new skills. She hopes to inspire others to try their hand at art, and she teaches privately in her home studio for anyone interested in learning. Her art can be viewed and purchased on her Facebook page @Adleynsart.u

THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE

There’s a secret garden, the kind from a favorite storybook, less than 30 miles north of Columbus; down a hedge-lined driveway and through a tiny opening that you may have missed, a tiny sign points you toward Fields of Grace flower farm. As you approach, you are met with beds of flowers stretching before an old farmhouse. Children scamper through freshly cut grass and perch in trees, their tiny squeals the perfect expression of joy and freedom that settles over the property like a dreamy, sparkling mist.

Dahlia tubers are strewn around tables, their twisting roots endearing in their promise of life. There is a fridge filled with cut flowers - both delicate and vibrant - waiting patiently as orders are fulfilled. A greenhouse holds the flower babies as they grow, keeping them safe until they are ready to join the rest of the farm.

Chickens peck away, a goat catches some sun, and time seems to stand still. Inside the farmhouse, every detail is carefully curated to bring joy, so that anyone who enters the space is met with beauty.

It is the dream of the founder, Brianne Womack, that the farm be a refuge and healing space for women who have endured trauma. The goal of the nonprofit is to “provide a safe retreat for hurting women to experience the healing love of Jesus Christ and to provide for the caregiver” with event programming and a retreat space in the farmhouse.

With the help of volunteers, the farmhouse itself is being turned into a space for caregivers to find sanctuary from lives that always require their undivided energy.

“It’s something that’s very important to me, that we as a community take care of our caregivers. If you feel unappreciated, you burn out -

even if you have the passion,” Womack explains. “There’s a huge lack of care for our caregivers. Our caretakers are important, and I don’t see enough resources being given to them.” At Fields of Grace, the intent is to “pour back into” these caregivers “so that they continue to want to do the hard work.”

“Studies have shown even if a child is placed in multiple foster homes through the years, if they have a consistent case worker throughout the process, they have much better long-term life outcomes.”

The three bedroom house holds five beds and the refuge that the whole farm provides is intended to make caregivers feel appreciated, so in turn they may return to their lives rejuvenated. The nonprofit’s intent is to bolster the family system, so that trauma is not passed down through generations. By caring for women with any type of trauma, especially those with overlooked trauma such as infertility issues, miscarriages, loss of a spouse/child/parent, adoption, mental or medical ailments, relational strains, those with a deep lack of sense of belonging, ambiguous loss, and so much more.

“It has been very intentional for me to make sure that everything in the house is beautiful and detailed - I want them to feel like they’re worthy of beautiful and great things,” Womack explains. From an intricate ginkgo chandelier to stunning floral bedding and soaring arches, every inch of the farmhouse is elegantly captivating, with just the perfect touch of whimsy.

Womack is in the process of creating partnerships with local businesses to assist in this endeavor both financially and with the services that they offer through local restaurants and organizations. By stocking the fridge with the caregiver’s favorite snacks and food so that every need will be cared for while they are in residence. “There will be intentional reading material available in the farmhouse,” Womack continues, “and eventually I hope to have a counselor available on site.”

The farm’s ethos is based in faith, the true Christian practice of giving back. “I was saved later in life,”

LocaL JULY 2023 10

explains Womack, “I didn’t grow up in the church. Personally, I know the difference it makes having a personal relationship with Jesus. I can run to him for comfort, and it’s a neverfailing relationship.”

She believes this healing presence can primarily be found outside in nature. “I grew up in a difficult environment, and for me, nature was my escape,” she says. “It’s where I found belonging and peace no matter what. It can be found in the intricate detail of each flower - a representation of how God created each of us to be so different, but so unbelievably beautiful.”

Fields of Grace strives to be a place where the entire family can step away from the hustle and bustle of city life and find something engaging to experience and edifying activity. There are childrens’ play areas, and they host field trips throughout the year.

They will be hosting a Flower Festival for three weekends in the fall, which will include a sunflower maze, flower youpicks, a dahlia field and tours, and petting and feeding the farm animals like goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, cats and

Other programs offered at the Fields of Grace include You Pick events on Wednesdays and Saturdays “for people to come and enjoy the flowers and the farm,” says Womack. They also offer workshops to teach about different blooms and their cultivation. Their most recent workshop focused on Dahlias. “There are so many ways you can grow them!” Womack exclaims excitedly.

“They have a very weird root system called tubers, but they grow into the most beautiful thing in your garden,” she explains. With the tubers, the colors of the flowers are always dependable - they can only turn out one way, but if “you grow them from seed, you don’t know how they’ll turn out - it’s a wonderful surprise!”

dogs. This will happen on September 23rd, 24th, and 30th, and October 1st, 7th, and 8th.

Fields of Grace relies heavily on financial donations and volunteer work as they strive to get the farmhouse ready for retreats, not to mention the cultivation and harvesting of the flowers themselves. If their mission speaks to you, and you are looking for a way to help, that is the most effective way to

do so. They also offer seasonal and full year subscriptions to the farm so that you can experience all of their activities.

Focused On The Flavors Of The Northern Gulf Coast

A Culinary Experience Worth the Drive

N ot too far away towards the outskirts of Phenix City sits a dining location in a league of its own. Driving out to Criolla, you find the city fading away behind you, as

restaurants across the southeast. He spent time running restaurants such as the Country Club of Columbus and Meritage in the early 2000’s before returning to the place he grew up, to care for his ailing grandmother. While in Florida, David and his family survived Hurricane Michael, a category 5 disaster that destroyed much of Panama City and Mexico Beach including the homes of David and his

dishes. One grandmother was French Cajun, the other was a “redneck from the country,” David recalls. Both sides have had a lasting influence on his culinary style. “I have recipes I’ve known my whole life,” David says.

At just the age of 15, David took a serious interest in cooking, and began working under some big name chefs in Panama City shortly after. As he gained experience in the kitchen, David’s interest grew. He went on to attend the Gulf Coast Community College culinary program, one of the top culinary programs in the southeast. After college, David made his way up to Atlanta where he interned at

office buildings give way to grassy meadows, the restaurant comes into view, a humble red-roofed shack that needs no flashing lights: the food is the beacon that brings people from all over.

The restaurant is off a quiet, almost forgotten road. A comfortable and casual atmosphere makes it known that at Criolla, it’s all about the food. Regulars take their

family. “We lost everything,” David says.

A house with power and water brought David back to the area in 2018 after he lost his home. Upon returning, David continued doing what he had been doing for his

spots, anticipating their meal, telling me it’s the best food they’ve ever had while I peruse the menus on each side of the walls and try to decide. They say, “You can’t go wrong. It’s all delicious.”

Originally from Panama City, Criolla’s owner and chef David Rushing has much experience working at fine dining

entire adult life: cooking delicious food.

David’s culinary background is rooted in his childhood, with memories of his grandmothers cooking memorable

Pano’s and Paul’s, widely considered one of Atlanta’s finest dining restaurants.

David’s experience grew in the kitchens of the top restaurants in the southeast. Working in Canopies restaurant in Panama City with chef Paul Stelloto, one of the top 50 chefs in North America. David also ran Saltwater Grill in Panama City for years, he worked as the Executive Sous Chef at Edgewater Beach Resort and he worked with Emerill at Commander’s Palace in New Orleans for 4 years as the Executive Sous Chef.

David’s experience has earned him prestigious awards too, such as the DiRoNa award (Distinguished Restaurants of North America), the Galloping Gourmet award, which he won three years in a row, the May County Culinary Classic, and more.

Food has become a way of life for David. Cooking isn’t just in his blood, it’s in his very soul, and he finds his way into a kitchen wherever he goes, all while raising his two boys.

In 2018, after David returned to the Columbus area from a storm-torn Panama City, he decided to do what came naturally to him: open a restaurant.

The culmination of David’s culinary experience is Criolla, an off-the-beaten-path place featuring upscale American “southern cooking, focused on the flavors of the northern gulf coast”, as his sign reads in front of the restaurant.

local favorites stay: the shrimp and grits, stuffed grouper, crab cakes and she-crab soup are top favorites and permanent menu items. A new offering is the Wednesday night seafood buffet including crab legs, an absolute steal at only $38 per person (just take note, that prices vary depending on the week and market prices).

With extensive catering experience, David also offers Criolla’s special menu - for weddings, events, corporate events, and more. As Criolla continues to regroup after the covid setbacks, future plans include additional work to add an outdoor bar area in the courtyard. The bar area will have a stage and David hopes to bring in live music

Opening a restaurant in the first part of 2019, David had no idea what was right around the corner. With a hugely positive response from the community, David remembers the first six months Criolla was open - “I had to beat them off with a stick,” he laughs. “Every night we were packed to the gills.” Unfortunately, covid came not long after the restaurant opened, forcing David to temporarily shut down the dining room and try to stay afloat on take out orders. “Somehow we stayed in business,” he says.

After weathering that rough patch, Criolla’s comeback is going full steam ahead – and the restaurant is getting noticed. “Criolla is the type of place that is known for the food – that’s what matters, of course - not splashy advertising or gimmicky themes”, says one of the restaurant’s regulars. That singular focus on making great food is why you can get a taste of great culinary flavors without having to reach too deep in your pockets, and it’s why word of mouth is the primary reason curious customers find their way to the door.

The menu is built each week around the seafood David is able to bring in. The menu changes weekly, but some

when it’s finished.

Criolla is a hidden culinary gem for the curious, tucked away in the backroads of east Alabama. With its fusion of southern fine dining and coastal roots, Criolla is a must for those seeking great taste without the hefty price tag. Make sure to check their Facebook page every Tuesday for the week’s menu items. Criolla is currently open Wednesday - Saturday from 5:00 - 9:00 pm EST, and Sundays from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. The restaurant is located at 4100 Sandfort Road in Phenix City (near Ladonia). u
