Background

Managing and reducing GHG emissions in the value chain requires commonly accepted metrics to increase efficiency and build credibility with stakeholders. The past years have been largely dedicated to building global standards for the measurement of product related GHG emissions. Particularly the international standards WRI/ WBCSD GHG Protocol and the ISO 14067 standard “Carbon Footprint of Products� are moving closer to completion. Furthermore, significant developments are taking place in different countries that will shape the practical implementation of product carbon footprinting in the future.

Updates on latest developments in product carbon footprint standardisation and related country and regional initiatives will be featured on Day 1 of the 4th PCF World Summit.

From Standardisation to Communication

However, reducing GHG emissions in the value chain additionally requires close collaboration and effective communication with supply chain partners and with consumers. The international agenda on adequate communication measures is still progressing. Carbon labels were an early answer to this request and related programmes are continuously being refined. Other approaches range from new forms of consumer engagement to radical transparency in supply chain related environmental and social information.

On Day 2 of the 4th PCF World Summit the prevalent issue of consumer communication and engagement will be dealt with in interactive workshops, presentations and discussions.

Overview Day 1, 20 October, 9:00 – 18:00 Update on international developments in Product Carbon Footprinting and GHG accounting in the value chain As a basis for the Summit’s discussions, Rasmus Priess, PCF World Forum, will introduce recent international developments in standardisation and applications of product carbon footprinting.

GHG Protocol Product and Scope 3 Standards Laura Draucker from the World Resources Institute and Andrea Brown from World Business Council for Sustainable Development will present details on the results of the road testing of the new GHG Protocol Standards and how these are shaping the standards to be published later this year.

Selected companies, such as 3M and Deutsche Telekom, that have participated in the GHG Protocol road testing will share their insights and experience in applying the draft standards.

ISO 14067 “Carbon Footprint of Products” The upcoming ISO 14067 standard has been significantly advanced at the recent meeting in Mexico and an update on progress and issues will be presented by Katherina Wührl, Secretary of ISO 14067, to the Summit participants.

Updates on significant regional and country initiatives Michele Galatola from the European Commission will present the current status and first results of the EU study on product carbon footprinting.

Updates on the French environmental labelling initiative, with particular emphasis on the recently introduced experimentation phase will be provided by Sylvain Chevassus from the French Environment Ministry, and discussed with participants.

Anna Richert from Svenskt Sigill and the Swedish Climate Certification Project will report on the launch of the certification scheme for food, underlying criteria and first results.

Networking with speakers and practitioners Throughout the two days of the 4th PCF World Summit, there will be extensive opportunities to engage with speakers and practitioners through question rounds, open space discussions and individual conversations in lunch and coffee breaks.

The exclusive low carbon network dinner will round off Day 1 of the Summit.

Overview Day 2, 21 October, 9:00 – 17:00 Video Keynote Daniel Goleman, psychologist and journalist, best known for his books on „Emotional Intelligence“ and „Social Intelligence“ will set the stage of Day 2 with a remote keynote presentation. In his most recent book „Ecological Intelligence: How Knowing the Hidden Impacts of What We Buy Can Change Everything“ he introduces the concept of Radical Transparency for products in the marketplace and will talk about the Value of Transparency.

Parallel Open Space discussions on dedicated topics in carbon footprint communication Previous summits have shown the great value of open space discussions and a clear need for longer interactive sessions.

Day 2 of the Summit will feature three facilitated tracks with dedicated topics related to carbon footprint communication. Each track will include input presentations on the issue at hand. Discussion results will be summed up and presented to the plenary at the end of Day 2.

Summit participants may suggest and facilitate additional topics of interest.

Facilitated by Greg Norris, Founder of New Earth and Earthster, input presentation on how Earthster helps to facilitate tracking of environmental and social data in supply chains.

Additional input by John Doyle, DG Information Society and Media, European Commission on machine readibility of product level carbon and environmental information.

Wrap-up and get-together Results of the open space discussions will be shared in the plenary. The Summit will close at 17:00 with an informal get-together allowing for personal wrap-ups of the two Summit days with fellow speakers and participants.

4th PCF World Summit, Berlin, 20-21 October 2010 Summit Background The PCF World Summits are bi-annual events organised by the PCF World Forum, a joint platform set up to foster and facilitate dialogue between international initiatives on how to assess, reduce and communicate the impact of goods and services on the climate.

The consumption of goods and services indirectly contributes to a large share of worldwide GHG emissions. Solutions are needed to help companies manage and communicate the impact of their products on the climate and environment in general. They are also needed to provide consumers with information on a product’s climate impact to help them make climate-conscious purchase decisions.

A growing number of initiatives in different countries are addressing this issue by developing standards for assessing carbon footprints and the overall environmental performance of goods and services.

Working towards a global standard has become a matter of urgency. The summit marks a unique opportunity to take account of recent developments and future prospects in international harmonisation and in communication of product carbon footprints.

The PCF World Forum was initiated by the Berlin based think-do-tank THEMA1.

The previous PCF World Summits attracted interest and commitment from more than 250 stakeholders from 30 countries and stimulated wide-ranging discussions.
