BIG PLANS REVEALED FOR CORONATION

The Strategy and Resources Committee has approved exciting plans around the Coronation of King Charles III, where people from all over can come and enjoy the celebrations with live music, acts and a big screen to watch all the action over the Bank Holiday weekend.

‘The Lord Mayor’s Coronation Party’ will take place in the Peace Gardens

on Saturday 6 May, with The King’s Concert taking place on Sunday 7 May, where the whole of the gardens will be decorated red, white and blue for a series of exciting events.

Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “The Kings Coronation will be a fantastic two-day celebration in Sheffield, where everyone can bring

their picnic blankets and watch the action live from a big screen.

“For many, this will be a once in a lifetime occurrence, so we want to put on a big show. I always love to see crowds gathering, celebrating together and having fun, and this is exactly what this weekend will be about –celebration.

“Live bands will be playing, there’ll be entertainment, bars and restaurants will be involved and there will l be such a patriotic atmosphere, I can’t wait.”

A staged area will be the focal point for live musical performances such as brass bands, swing bands and more, playing music from a range of genres to appeal to all ages. These performances will take place before and after the live broadcast of the

Coronation.

On Sunday 7 May, The King’s Concert will be broadcast live from Windsor. The centrepiece of the Coronation Concert, ‘Lighting up the Nation’, will see the country join together in celebration as iconic locations across the United Kingdom are lit up using projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations.

Councillor Terry Fox added: “We’re also encouraging people to host their own street parties, where we will support you with road closures, there’s the Coronation Big Lunch on 7 May where communities can come together to celebrate and on 8 May is the Big Help Out, encouraging everyone to get involved with volunteering – we will be supporting communities

to celebrate all three of these events.”

Alongside this, £5,000 will be allocated to each Local Area Committee to help fund community celebrations.

Guidance for residents for how to organise street parties, details on getting involved in The Coronation Big Lunch and information on The Big Help Out can be found at sheffnews.com/ news/big-plans-revealedfor-kings-charles-IIIcoronation

This week the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Sioned-Mair Richards, has confirmed that an Extraordinary Meeting will be held to discuss the implications of the street tree inquiry.

The Lord Mayor has made the following statement:

“After considering a request from members of the Green group, I can confirm that an Extraordinary Meeting will be held to discuss the implications of the street tree inquiry.

“Sir Mark Lowcock has written a thorough and evidence-based report.

In it he has stated ‘If the lessons [of the report] are to be learned, they will need to be fully

discussed by the Council and others and then acted upon’. This is what I hope the Extraordinary Meeting will begin to do.

“It is vitally important that the Council takes the time to ensure all interested parties can contribute fully, that those voices who have a stake in this can be engaged and heard, and that this meeting properly meets the needs of the city. I will formally announce the date and agenda in the near future, once we have had the opportunity to consider the format this meeting will take.

“Having taken advice from the Chief Executive and the Monitoring Officer I cannot call this meeting during the preelection period, and we

expect the meeting to be held on 10 May 2023, which will allow for a full debate.

“It is positive that there has already been an initial public discussion about the street tree inquiry report. I hope

that the Extraordinary Meeting will provide an opportunity for all views to be heard and a way forward for everyone to be developed. “I will provide further information as soon as possible.”

Online safety is increasingly important, even for popular platforms like WhatsApp. With over 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp has become a favourite target for fraudsters and tactics have become more ingenious and effective than ever.

The majority of users are vulnerable when online, making it an irresistible platform for scammers. Cybersecurity experts have compiled their top tips on how to recognise WhatsApp scams and how to prevent them.

What is WhatsApp fraud (friend or family emergency scam)?

WhatsApp fraud involves cybercriminals pretending to be someone known by the victim and asking for money. They pose as friends or family members with urgent financial needs, leading to victims losing thousands of pounds.

Advanced WhatsApp scam: WhatsApp hijacking WhatsApp hijacking involves unauthorised access to a victim’s WhatsApp account by a cybercriminal, who then uses it to commit fraudulent activities. The process of hacking into a WhatsApp account may seem complicated, but it is a common practice among cybercriminals. This is how it is done:

1 The fraudster obtains the phone number of the first victim.

2 The cybercriminal (re) installs WhatsApp on their phone or another device.

3 The criminal contacts the victim, impersonating an acquaintance of the victim.

4 The WhatsApp fraudster lies to the victim, saying that they have accidentally sent their verification code to the victim.

5 The cybercriminal tricks the victim into giving them the verification code, which they then

bus GatE schEmE GoEs lIvE

type into their own phone thus gaining access to the victim’s WhatsApp account and all the victim’s contacts.

WhatsApp fraud and voicemail box hijacking

Another common trick for fraudsters is breaking into voicemail boxes to steal WhatsApp verification codes. They ask to receive a call instead of a text message, so they can call the victim’s phone number at the same time and redirect the code to the voicemail box. Once they have control, it is easy for the fraudster to defraud the victim’s contacts and take over their accounts. This type of fraud can quickly escalate and is difficult to spot.

What are the tell-tale signs of WhatsApp scams?

• Scammer creates a sense of urgency and pressures you to pay quickly.

• Scammer contacts you from an unknown number.

• Scammer informs about a number change and quickly talks about money.

• Poor English is used in their messages.

• Scammer does not want to be called.

• Scammer asks for money to be transferred to an unknown account or uses an app that hides account numbers.

Tips to prevent WhatsApp fraud

• Check if the number is correct if someone asks for money.

• Check the language and communication style of the message.

• Call the number or contact the person in a different way to verify the story.

• Do not let the fraudster pressure you; think logically.

• Ask the scammer a question only your friend or acquaintance would know the answer to if suspicious.

• Secure voicemail with a personal code.

• Never send a verification code without questioning.

• Set up “2-Factor Authentication” on WhatsApp. Remember that the tips provided above are not only important to protect yourself. If criminals manage to hijack your WhatsApp account, they can easily scam your contacts and possibly take over the accounts of your friends and family as well. I’ve been a victim of WhatsApp fraud, what can I do?

If you have been a victim of WhatsApp fraud, it is important to remain calm and report the incident to your bank and the police. Depending on the circumstances, it may be possible to reverse the payment, but individuals must act quickly. Wire transfers are harder to recover, and online payment services or apps can complicate the process. Even if a refund is not issued, the bank will investigate the fraud claim to protect customers and prevent future fraud. Reporting scams to WhatsApp and AnyScam is also recommended, and national help groups for victims of fraud can assist individuals in dealing with the process and preventing future fraud.

A bus gate is being introduced on Arundel Gate from Monday, 20 March 2023 which will reduce the number of vehicles travelling along the stretch of road. The bus gate forms part of the Council’s plans to improve bus movements and the environment in this part of the city centre. The bus gate will apply northbound only and will restrict traffic from travelling beyond the Novotel Hotel access point, by the Millennium Gallery, when coming from the Furnival Gate direction. All traffic will be able to use Arundel Gate in a southbound direction. Access to all businesses on Arundel Gate will be maintained but the route that some drivers will need to take may need to change. Only buses, taxis and other authorised vehicles will be able to pass through the bus gate on Arundel Gate – one of the city’s most polluted areas. General traffic will not be able to use this as a throughroute between Furnival Square roundabout and Park Square roundabout. The new bus gate is being implemented through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO). A period of statutory

consultation is taking place for the first 6 months and the experimental order will run for up to 18 months. During this consultation, the public can provide feedback on the operation of the bus gate. All feedback will be considered before a decision is made on whether the bus gate is to be retained permanently. Introducing a bus gate in this location will help to bring down the levels of pollution by reducing the number of vehicles which can travel along the road. It will also improve the environment for pedestrians and cyclists, and provide reliable journey times for bus users across the city centre. Vehicles are still able to access the Q-Park car park on Charles Street and the Novotel Hotel, using the northbound carriageway, travelling from Furnival Square roundabout. Full access is maintained for all vehicles travelling from Park Square roundabout to Furnival Square roundabout. The right turn into Norfolk Street, and therefore access to Surrey Street, will remain possible when travelling southbound along Arundel Gate. Further information can be found on the Connecting Sheffield website.

The installation of the bus gate is one of several measures, including the Clean Air Zone, required to reduce air pollution in Sheffield – all part of the Council’s wider Clean Air Plan. Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Co-Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said: “Arundel Gate is one of the most polluted spots in the

city and the Council must do all it can to reduce these dangerous pollution levels. We cannot ignore the devastating effects pollution can have on people’s health, particularly the elderly, children and people with existing health conditions. All of this work supports Sheffield’s Clean Air Plan which will improve air quality and improve health of our population. We encourage local people to have their say on this measure now to help us as we progress our plans. The statutory consultation is live now and will be for the first 6 months. Everyone’s feedback will be considered before a decision is made on whether or not to keep the bus gate in place.”

Providing feedback Sheffield City Council recently ran a six-week initial consultation allowing users of Arundel Gate to provide feedback. This phase of consultation went live on the Monday 16 January 2023 and ran until Monday 27 February 2023. People can now make comments on the scheme as part of the statutory consultation process for the Arundel Gate bus gate ETRO. Those who would like to make a comment are asked to provide:

In today’s hectic life, it has become increasingly difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Sleep deprivation has many effects, from high blood pressure to anxiety, but did you know it could also be damaging your oral health too?

Dr. Khaled Kasem, Chief Orthodontist has revealed the common dental issues caused by sleep deprivation, including tooth grinding, bad breath, bleeding gums / gum infections, tooth decay and even tooth loss.

Inflammation of the gums

“One of the most common dental issues caused by sleep deprivation is inflammation of the gums, otherwise known as gingivitis, and this is caused by the additional inflammatory hormones produced by the body when it isn’t getting enough sleep. The first sign of gum inflammation is bleeding gums – it’s at this point you must act and seek advice from a medical professional, as gingivitis can lead to more serious dental problems

Teeth grinding (Bruxism)

“Although Bruxism (clenching/grinding your teeth) is most typically a result of stress and anxiety, it is also common amongst those suffering from sleep deprivation and it can seriously impact the health of your mouth. Mild cases might not require treatment, but those who frequently

clench and apply too much stress to their teeth could develop severe jaw disorders, headaches and migraines, flattened/ fractured teeth, increased tooth sensitivity and even tooth loss!

Weakened immune system

“The primary function of our immune system is to help defend the body against infections, and it is vital in maintaining the overall health of the body. Not only that, but a strong immune system contributes to healthy teeth and gums, and a lack of sleep will weaken the immune system and its ability to protect the mouth against common infections.”

Bad breath (halitosis)

“A lack of sleep reduces the production of saliva in the mouth. Saliva is required to keep our mouths clean by reducing the amount of bacteria, but if this is in limited supply and our mouths become dry, the bacteria will build and our breaths will smell.”

Sleep deprivation impacts our body in many ways other than just making us feel tired, but most surprisingly is just how much it can impact our oral health, and when struggling with sleep it’s always best to seek advice from a medical professional before it really starts to take its toll on your body.

VOTE FOR THE LEADMILL IN THE 2023 MUSIC WEEK AWARDS

It was announced this month that the long-standing Sheffield venue had earned its place on the prestigious ballot alongside a host of the country’s best independent venues.

The Leadmill welcomed a number of impressive touring acts last year, with the likes of Cassyette, Alfie Templeman and Grace Petrie playing to a packed house, as well as local acts such as Minds Idle, VIVAS and Sheafs selling out their biggest shows to date.

As well as live music, the venue also regularly hosts a diverse array of comedians, club nights and cultural events, with highlights including two performances from Eddie

Izzard (one being a standup set, the other being a solo rendition of Dickens’ Great Expectations), femaleoriented club night She Said, and Slambarz - an open mic event for young urban music performers. The Music Week Awards are an annual recognition of excellence and innovation in the music industry, encompassing record labels, publishing, live, retail, A&R, radio, marketing and PR. These prestigious awards are peer-voted and judged by an independent panel of specialist judges, however the Grassroots Venue: Spirit of the Scene award is exclusively decided by the gig-going public.

As such The Leadmill is launching a nationwide campaign, appealing to those who have enjoyed a night in the venue to give them their vote and help bring home the gold for Sheffield and its fantastic music scene. Voting is open now and freely available to access through the Music Week Awards website, with the closing date on March 31st. The awards ceremony will take place in London on May 24th, with thousands of music industry figures in attendance.

To cast your vote, visit the Music Week Awards voting page here: www. musicweekawards.com/ grassrootsvote2023

CORRIE’S WENDI PETERS RETURNS TO ROUNDAbOUT’S A NIgHT AT THE MUSICALS!

Coronation Street star Wendi Peters is back for a second year topping the bill at the Crucible Theatre for a special event in support of South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout.

Roundabout’s A Night at the Musicals will make its second appearance on the world-famous Crucible stage on May 23, showcasing a wealth of home grown talent - and once again, Wendi will be the host for the evening.

The actress best known for playing Corrie’s Cilla Battersby and

currently starring in BBC medical hit Doctors has also enjoyed a successful stage career, with roles in musicals as varied as White Christmas, Oh What a Lovely War, Big: The Musical and several pantomime appearances, including Sheffield’s Lyceum.

Joining her on stage will be another experienced musical star, Sheffield born West End actor Matt Croke, who played the starring role in the London stage version of Disney’s Aladdin.

Organised and staged by Roundabout, A Night at the Musicals will feature a lineup of some of the region’s top musical theatre performers, on stage with Wendi and Matt for an unforgettable night of song. Already confirmed to appear following their acclaimed performances at last year’s show are X Factor and Tramlines singer Jack Marshall-Over and The Voice UK contestant Ruth Lockwood, alongside fellow South Yorkshire favourites Jessica Kennedy and

Emma Southworth. Also taking to the stage will be acapella chorus Steel City Voices and the young talent of both Rotherham Theatrical Student Academy and the RMC Academy of Theatre Performance.

“We are so pleased that both Wendi and Matt have agreed to join us once more for what promises to be an unforgettable evening of musical talent,” said Roundabout Events Fundraiser Denise Lawrenson. “In just one show you will hear the top hits from the West End, Broadway and film, making the most of South Yorkshire’s great great wealth of stage talent. And with Wendi introducing the performers, it promises to be a stunning night of superb entertainment and a fantastic showcase for some of our finest local voices.”

It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra and Heavy Metal flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where legendary rocker Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and groupies line up for their chance at an autograph. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ‘n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more can hold the answer.

MENTALITY A KEY FACTOR IN OUR SEASON

United will be running out at Wembley in April, after Tommy Doyle’s wonder strike settled a pulsating Emirates FA Cup quarter-final against Blackburn Rovers in the Blades favour on Sunday afternoon.

Rovers twice led thanks to goals from Ben Brereton-Diaz and Sammie Szmodics, but a Sam Gallagher goal restored parity before the break, before Oli McBurnie levelled late on meaning Doyle’s 25-yard screamer proved decisive.

Boss Heckingbottom made one change for the last-eight encounter, with

McBurnie recalled at the expense of Jebbison, who dropped to the nine-man bench, which also included Coulibaly and Arblaster. United started positively with Pears drawn into action twice in a matter of minutes. McAtee was denied having found himself through on goal from Egan’s pass, before Doyle tried his luck from distance.

But on 21 minutes, following a lengthy delay, VAR suggested the referee check a possible handball by Robinson after he had blocked Gallagher’s shot before Foderingham tipped over. A penalty

was awarded and duly converted by BRERETONDIAZ, with the United defender booked prior to Rovers taking the lead.

Less than seven minutes later though, United restored parity as Lowe’s shot from a partially cleared corner took a big deflection off GALLAGHER to wrong foot his goalkeeper and nestle in the far corner.

Before the break, Hyam saw header tipped over by Foderingham, before Gallagher glanced another header wide from the resulting corner.

United were quickly out of the blocks in the second half, but McAtee and then Baldock failed to capitilise on opening, before the former was denied by Pears as he latched on to a short back pass from Travis. And the visitors then netted against the run of play as SZMODICS broke the offside trap and fired low and hard into Foderingham’s bottom corner. Carter was cautioned for a late challenge on McBurnie, as Sharp was introduced

New date for Yorkshire derby

A new date has been confirmed for United’s Sky Bet Championship fixture with Neil Warnock’s Huddersfield Town.

The match was scheduled for Saturday 22nd April 2023 but has been put back due to United’s involvement in the Emirates FA Cup semi-final

that weekend.

The trip across Yorkshire to face Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium will now take place on Wednesday 3rd May 2023 with a 7.45pm kick-off.

United will take on Premier League Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final.

Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades booked a place at Wembley after coming from behind twice to defeat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 thanks to Tommy Doyle’s late winner at Bramall Lane.

The semi-final ties will be played the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd April 2023.

in place of Robinson, but it was Rovers who almost added a third as Hedges cut inside from the right and hit the post, with the ball rolling across the goal line before being cleared. But on 82 minutes, just when it seemed the tie might be slipping away, United showed character and resilience in bucket loads to drag themselves back into the reckoning, with MCBURNIE placing a left-footed strike across Pears and into the far corner to reinvigorate the Lane, as Doyle tried to repeat the feet and Bogle came on for Baldock. And with seconds left of the 90, United snatched it with an absolute screamer. Morton was outmuscled by Ndiaye, McAtee worked the channel and from Berge’s pass, DOYLE took aim and unleashed an unstoppable effort beyond a helpless Pears as the roof literally came off at S2. Four minutes of injury passed with too much incident allowing Blades fans to plot a return to the national stadium next month.

Will Vaulks says the mentality of the Owls squad has been a key factor in the Owls season.

The midfielder spoke with swfc.co.uk following Friday night’s draw with Bolton and cut a dejected figure after posting a point on the board. With a desperate desire to improve game on game, Vaulks has his eyes set on Tuesday’s South Yorkshire derby as Wednesday head to Barnsley. Discussing the club’s

winning mentality this season, he explained:

“We want to win every game, simple as that really. Every game we go into we want to win and when we don’t we are disappointed.

“We’ll pick the Bolton game apart and see where we can be better and go from there.

“We’ve got a massive game on Tuesday, Barnsley away so we’ll take the point from Bolton, see what we can improve and go and try and win that game.

“We’re 23 games unbeaten and we want to see how long we can keep that going.

“The players and staff want to win every single game and that mentality

has been a big factor in our success so far.” Wednesday have suffered just three defeats all season with the last going all the way back to early October.

PLAYER-WORN ShIRTS UP FOR GRABS!

Wednesdayites have an exciting auction opportunity in association with the Fan Cave Authentic Memorabilia.

The players’ shirts from last week’s home game against Bolton will be available via auction now. In addition, one shirt will be available as a raffle prize for £1 per ticket, giving all supporters the chance of winning an authentic player-worn shirt.

Schofield frustrated as mistakes give Rovers uphill task at Salford

Danny Schofield said Rovers gave themselves an uphill task with poor mistakes as they fell to defeat at Salford City. Each of the goals conceded in the 3-1 defeat was preventable, leaving Schofield frustrated against a good quality opposition:

Schofield on how the game played out:

“It was a difficult game for us and I think the better

Taylors give reaction to Millers abandonment

“It was clearly not playable in certain places. More around the outside, but there was standing water through the middle as well.

The auction and raffle will see a proportion of proceeds donated to the SWFC Community Programme, helping facilitate sports, health and wellbeing in the local area.

The auction will run for seven days until Tuesday 28 March.

team overall won the football game. When you come to these places you know that it’s going to be a tough challenge.

“To concede the first two goals on the back end of mistakes from us is difficult and gives you an uphill challenge. Mistakes are going to happen in games but we need to eradicate them to give us the opportunity to compete.

“Conceding the third one, that next goal was vital to get us a foothold in the game. We wanted to try to be on the front foot and press a bit higher. But Salford are a good team and they created some good moments against us

“Salford had some quality actions but when we conceded the third goal I thought we defended it poorly. It was then

“The first inspection was half an hour after the initial suspension and then the other 15 minutes. The question then became how long do you give it until it does become playable.

“Then you have to consider the state of the players and any other future injuries that may occur. The longer it went on, the less likely it was that the game would

difficult for us to get back into the game and they managed it well.”

On the impact of the defeat:

“We saw this game as an important one for us because we knew we were coming into it six points off Salford. If we could compete and win the game it would have cut the gap. We knew a defeat would be really damaging to our hopes.

“We’ve got to dust ourselves down quickly and move onto Tuesday.”

On Stuart Moore’s arrival:

“He came in to train on Friday and was straight into the team. He’s signed on an emergency loan because of the shoulder injury to Jonathan Mitchell. We waited on

be played.

“There are certain situations that you cannot control. I was fully focused on improving the team if I’m being completely honest.

“We made a change at half time and then a further two after that and we needed to. They were tactical changes.

“I was disappointed that we

the scan results and when we got the results we moved to bring in Stuart.

“I think he showed great character. It’s always difficult when a keeper makes an error. It happens in football.

“Do we need to eradicate these mistakes? Yes. I think there’s been too many this season.

“But Stuart showed good character to perform well for the rest of the game.”

On frustration from supporters:

“I’ve got to take that criticism. If the team is not performing and not winning games, that’s part of my role. It’s disappointing because when you put so much work into trying to win football games and it doesn’t materialise how you want, it’s difficult.”

were having to chase the game because of our own performance. Then the focus completely changed on getting the game to be playable. Ultimately, the weather is the weather and we can’t control that. “What we can control is that the next time we play, our performance levels improve.”
