Bond Rides a Honda Opening in theaters November 9, Skyfall, the twenty-third installment of the franchise, Daniel Craig hits two wheels again in the opening sequence which involves chasing henchmen on a motorcycle through Istanbul’s streets and rooftops. The motorcycles are modified and aged Honda CRF250R motocross bikes (with Bond’s steed sporting weirdly new looking fenders), and the filming environment was so tight, many of the moving shots were photographed using cameras attached to motorcycles riding alongside the action.

There’s an old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Sometimes, as is the case with this particular story, a picture hides a thousand stories… As a young man in Brant County, Ont, Canada, Captain John Maus, MD, lived on

a farm before deciding to attend medical school at Toronto University. Like many of his fellow students who graduated at the outbreak of the Second World War, he joined the Medical Corps. Dr. Maus attended motorcycle courses on Indian and Harley-Davidson motorcycles at Camp Borden as part of all medical doctors’ basic training. When he arrived in England, he was is-

sued a Norton motorcycle. After arriving on the shores of Normandy, Captain Maus was put in command of a field hospital, and at the conclusion of WWII, he set up a medical practice in Windsor, Ontario. In and of itself, it’s an interesting little story; a snippit of Canadian history and a reference to someone we owe both our gratitude and see p. 3

continued from cover appreciation for his service to our country. Dr. Maus lived into his early 90’s, but his story doesn’t end there. In fact, it’s somewhat the beginning of another tale… Director of (and volunteer at) The Canadian Military Heritage Museum in Brantford, Ontario, a gentleman by the name of Donald Wilkin, was at the funeral, when he spotted a photograph taken during World War II of Dr. Maus (his brother-in-law’s oldest brother) on a motorcycle. Being a Canadian military heritage enthusiast, Mr. Wilkin was intrigued by the photograph for a lot of different reasons, the least of which was the fact that he had been thinking about looking for, purchasing and restoring a vintage motorcycle to take along with him when he was out and about in the community with vehicles from the museum. The photo of Dr. Maus interested him enough to prompt him to ask friend and fellow museum volunteer, Roger Sharpe, to keep his eyes open for an opportunity to buy a vintage Norton 16H if he ever found one. Mr. Sharpe did just that, and after a great deal of searching the internet and using other methods at his disposal, he brought Donald’s attention to a 1940 Norton 16H WD that was listed for sale by someone in Seattle. In March of 2010, Mr. Wilkin purchased the bike from a Seattle-based automotive dealership. From Seattle, it was shipped to Brantford’s Canadian Military Heritage Museum where it is currently on display. All things considered, Wilkin was delighted with the condition of his acquisition. The bike’s traditionally chrome parts would have been easy for the enemy to spot and so they didn’t escape the touch of someone who painted the Norton all over in a flat tan colour. Since its arrival in Brantford, the motorcycle has been faithfully and lovingly restored to working condition with the help of Mr. Jim Hip-

kin (owner of Hip’s Cycle in Brantford) and Roger Sharpe (Donald’s friend and fellow museum volunteer). TRACING ITS ROOTS The history of this particular Norton motorcycle is an interesting one. It was purchased by the Seattle auto dealership in early 2010 from the Richard V. Kruse Foundation Inc.’s World War II Victory Museum. For 10 years, the bike was part of the exhibits at the museum (which was established in 1999 by its founders Dean & Kristin Krause, and their sons, Dima and Devin) located in Auburn, Indiana. The majority of the collection at the Krause’s museum came from the former Vintage Memorial Museum that was located in Messancy, Belgium; Donald Wilkin’s Norton motorcycle was a part of that collection. Prior to that, the motorcycle was part of the collection of the Belgium Victory Memorial Museum. This museum located near Arlon, Belgium housed one of the largest collections of allied and axis fighting vehicles and support vehicles in the world, including over 140 specific military vehicles, 50 motorcycles and 279 uniforms from over 11 different nations. This particular Norton’s service history before being housed in the Belgium Museum is still the subject of research and debate. One theory is that since the bike’s yellow headlight bulb is French in origin and one of the tires was manufactured in France, the bike saw military service among French forces and/or post-war French military or civilian use. During WWII, Norton produced over 100,000 motorcycles. The 16H was destined chiefly for the British and Canadian Armies. The 16H was most commonly used as a despatch rider’s bike, and was sometimes used

Norton 16H - on display at the Canadian Military Heritage Museum, Brantford.

to transport carrier pigeons. 16H’s were used both as a solo mount and also with a sidecar. While the 16H underwent many changes, it kept the same engine dimensions (C73mm bore 100mm stroke) throughout its long life. Reconditioned Army Nortons were available long after the end of hostilities in 1945, and a French importer was still selling them as recently as 1975. THE ‘BIG PICTURE’ From the time of its production at the Norton factory in England until it made its way home (and hopefully to its ‘final resting place’) in the Canadian Heritage Military Museum in Brantford, Donald Wilkin’s Norton 16H WD has a rich history spanning over 70 years and two continents. Its restoration (so far) has included parts from all over the world, including the UK, Austria, Belgium and India. It has been a labour of love for all those involved, and Donald Wilkin still finds it in-

credible to think that the whole thing started because of something as simple as a photograph. Sometimes, it appears, a picture IS worth a thousand words…. SPECIFICS The bike at the Brantford museum has engine and frame #W2172, and was part of the 1st British Army WWII wartime contract #C5109 with Norton Motorcycle. The wartime production used a ‘W’ prefix to engine numbers and originally had matching engine and frame numbers. This first contract was for 6,000 16H’s – engine numbers W1000 to W6999 – and commenced production on October 7th, 1939. Unfortunately, little has survived of the wartime production records. Norton reached W1104 on October 10th, 1939; that is the last entry on record. According to the gentlemen researching this motorcycle on display at the museum, it’s likely that W2172 was produced during Oct. or Nov. of 1939.

BRAIN STORM opinions

BRENT WAKEFORD Editor, The Motorcycle Times

Remembering Remembrance Day, originally was a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. The Federal Department of Veterans Affairs Canada has since stated; that the date is of “remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace”; specifically, the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and all conflicts since then in which members of the Canadian Forces have participated. We don’t just remember the ones who have given their life and died but also the ones who have offered their life to serve or who have served. As Remembrance Day approaches, our veterans are seen in parades and malls, the poppies come out, the legions are bustling and the traditional moment of silence is given on November 11th in respect and remembrance. The day comes and goes and many forget about it or put it away in their personal archives, but for countless dedicated men and women, it’s not just about one day out the year. Our vets live this day, every-day. From the motorcycle prospective, take Trapper Cane and the 1st CAV riding club members and vets, or Capt. Wayne Johnson of the Wounded Warriors, The Balding Eagles-Heroes Highway Ride organizers, North Wall Riders, Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group, and so many other motorcycle enthusiasts, who devote much of their time all year long to remember and help those who serve(d). They go the extra mile. Some of these riders have served and know first-hand what sacrifices were made and still have to be, to remember and honour. Many vets who have served, not just in previous wars and conflicts, but recent and on-going ones, have issues they deal with, whether physical or emotional and they can’t do it alone. Not all wounds have visible scars. That’s where these riders and/ or the dedicated riding clubs step up. They organize fund raisers, they make visits to veterans and their associations, hold rallies and events with local legions and do their part in assisting and supporting our vets anyway they can. Not just one day out of

the year. The men and women of the armed forces, volunteered to defend our freedomssigned on to help keep this country safe and secure from enemies foreign or domestic, whether they are peace keepers or combat deployed -- they allow us to live our lives day-to-day knowing we are protected. What thanks do we show them? One day? We need to step up people! We can do more. In these tough economical times, we can’t always dig deep with the necessary funds to help all the worthy causes that are near and dear to our hearts but we can assist in other ways. We can appreciate in different ways, we can support in many ways. Volunteer some time, visit a legion or veterans association or home, sit with a vet and talk and give them your attention, shake their hand and say thank you. You’d be surprised how far and deep those gestures will go in saying, thank you for what you have done for me. Whether young or old, these vets are our people. They are neighbors, friends, fathers and mothers, sisters, brothers and children of those around us. They are an intricate part of the foundation of this great country and we can’t let that crumble. Support your veterans, past, present and future and don’t forget your poppy. The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem “In Flanders Fields”. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour -- an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in war.

The Ode of Remembrance They went with songs to the battle, they were young. Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. Lest we forget.

November 2012, The Motorcycle Times – 6

MOTORCYCLENEWS

BMW ConnectedRide Could Help Drivers See Motorcyclists If you have ridden motorcycles for any extended period of time, you likely have had a “moment” with an automobile — it happens to every rider. Motorcycles have a small visual profile when viewed from the front and rear, and we move around in our lanes, favoring the sides or the middle, depending on the road and traffic conditions. We change velocities with ease, accelerate much quicker than a car, and in a predominantly four-wheeled society, drivers are conditioned to look for an automobile in their mirrors, not a motorcycle. I can barely go a week without hearing a story from a fellow motorcyclist about how he or she was cut-off by some “cager” that was either not paying attention, or worse, intentionally out to injure them. The truth is, there is no great car conspiracy to run motorcycles off the road, though some drivers do let their road rage get ahead of them, not realizing that a car is two-ton rolling weapon. A great component to being a seasoned motorcyclist is riding defensively, which includes understanding that lawful riding doesn’t always mean prudent riding. A large portion of my “near misses” I saw before they even happened. A driver on a phone, a car hugging one side of the line, a gap forming in a lane during traffic, all these things are enticements to a driver to change lanes rapidly and without caution. These conditions should also be signals to a rider to be weary of the four-wheeled vehicle near them, as the burden is on us a motorcyclists to ensure our own safety on the road — we are silly to place that burden on someone else, especially someone within the relative safety an automobile provides. When I hear these near-miss stories, what I rarely hear are the events that happened 30 seconds before the incident. Did the motorcyclist change lanes? How long had they been behind / next to / in front of the car in question? Did they see the driver in his or her mirror? If so, what were they doing? Sure, when they came over into your lane, nearly running you off the road, they were legally at fault, but you were in the wrong to think they wouldn’t do such an act.

Motorcycles conform to traffic patterns that are different from those used by automobiles. It is entirely possible for an attentive driver to check for a clear lane, and within the time it takes to signal and move lanes, a previously unseen motorcycle can take that space. All the “Look Twice” campaigns in the world cannot overcome the reality that if a motorcyclist puts him or herself in a rightful, but dangerous position, a bad outcome can still occur. But what if cars and motorcycles talked to each other? BMW is currently working on a car-to-x communication system that links vehicles in order to extend the “anticipation horizon” for drivers — whatever that means. BMW hopes that different vehicles will be able signal and talk to each other, and the benefits of the system could mean a great reduction in the “near miss” stories that motorcyclists share with each other. With the car-to-x communication program being a large multi-instituional project to bring inter-vehicle communications to reality, BMW’s ConnectedRide program is perhaps the most intriguing element for motorcyclists to come from the venture. Alerting riders to changing road conditions ahead, it is also not unforeseeable for the system to alert automobile drivers when a motorcycle is within close proximity. Other benefits from the system also include alerting riders and drivers to when there is a vehicle behind a blind turn, possibly about to enter the lane and cause an accident (it is worth noting that vehicles could also be made aware of oncoming, but unseen, traffic as well). The system also bodes well in helping reduce traffic congestion, as well as a multitude of other benefits as it matures further. For now, the BMW Group is experimenting with 20 cars and 5 motorcycles on German roads to see how the ConnectedRide/ConnectedDrive systems should be grown and improved. Interesting stuff, and an interesting counterpoint to what motorcycling could be like when autonomous vehicles rule the road. TMT

Yamaha Announces New for ‘13 FJR1300 & V-Star 1300 Deluxe Yamaha Motor Canada is pleased to introduce our 2013 motorcycles. This year’s lineup is highlighted by the new FJR1300 and V-Star 1300 Deluxe. New for 2013, the FJR1300 sets the benchmark against which all other sport touring motorcycles are measured. New state-of-theart innovations include electronic cruise control, traction control system, drive-mode that lets you select performance character, meter panel design with advanced styling and function, and a new aerodynamic front cowl for improved comfort on long distance rides. Also new for 2013 is the V-Star 1300 Deluxe. The world’s first production midsize “bagger” is loaded with features including: a fuel injected, liquid cooled 1300cc V-Twin, stylish fork mounted fairings, hard shell sad-

dlebags, iPod/iPhone ready audio system and a Garmin Zumo 665 Navigation system. Yamaha Motor Canada Ltd. Motorcycle Product Manager, John Bayliss said “The new FJR1300 is attracting lots of very positive feedback. A number of customers have already stepped up and left deposits with our dealers, without even seeing the bike in person! This tells us the designers and engineers have done a great job. We are also very excited by the new V-Star 1300 Deluxe. This mid-size “bagger” fills a gap in the market place. The V-Star 1300 Deluxe is truly in a class by itself and offers incredible comfort and convenience for a variety of riders”. Both these bikes will have their official Canadian unveiling at the Toronto Motorcycle Show, December 7th-9th.

Bren Long Brown: Well, I ain’t either. LOL LOL. My opinion for what its worth? ‘Ol lady is married, bitch is not The Motorcycle Times: I get the old joke when I am riding two up that I am ‘bitchin’ with my mentor.... Bren Long Brown: Old Lady -- These are the wives or steady girlfriends of club members. An old lady is the property of one biker and can’t be used or abused by other club members. An old lady is not a club member and like sheep, are not permitted to attend club meetings. They also will (in some clubs) wear “Property of” colors; however, with the name of the biker she belongs to on the bottom rocker The Motorcycle Times: ‘Belongs’.. hmmm..... Peggy Chisholm Shoebottom: If my man called me his ol lady, I’d kick his ass and then probably stop riding with him..... Just sayin’ ; )

SalES EvEnT

Sons of Anarchy: A biker soap opera that airs weekly on Tuesdays at 10pm.

October 9th: The ‘Sons of Anarchy’ club is partnering up with Nero to run a brothel and they have a place in mind for setting up shop. It’s the old Elk’s Club far out of town, and it’s the perfect place to run a business of this type while staying off the law’s radar. The club votes and accepts Jax’s idea. The next step is securing the sale of the Elk’s Club property, which proves to be easier said than done. The SAMCRO boys resort to using blackmail to secure the building, and the blackmail plan leads to some of the funniest and most awkward scenes that we’ve seen the SAMCRO boys in since the show started. In addition, Jax meets with the Irish for the first time as club president. It’s evident that it will take some convincing for Galen to continue working with the club without Clay at the head of the table. Charming’s home invasions continue and everyone is blaming and pointing fingers. Nero stops seeing Gemma at Jax’s request. Keeping Gemma away from Nero will make Clay happy, but is that the only reason Jax did it? October 16th: SAMCRO ramps up its dealings with Pope, making commitments that put the club deeper into the drug trade instead of going back to their roots of gun running. Jax’s revenge on the corrupt prison guard was as brutal as Opie’s death in prison, with the added element of the casual execution of the guard’s wife declared ‘‘collateral damage’ by Jax. Although some moments of introspection follow the double homicide (Chibbs giving Tig a peck on the cheek and asking him if he’s ok, and Jax asking Tara for a weekend away), Kurt Sutter manages to effectively blend the horrors that come with ‘the life’ with the touches of humanity in the characters that keep us caring about what happens next. Elsewhere, we learned that Clay is not as sick and weak as he portrays, and he is revealed to be the mastermind behind the home invasions. It’s pretty safe to assume that Clay’s objective is to undermine Jax’s leadership, and ultimately regain his position at the head of the table. Otto made an appearance and a rather interesting request of Tara in exchange for recanting his statement to RICO. Although she shot Otto down initially, one has to wonder how far Tara will go for Jax and SAMCRO. October 23rd: Plenty of twists and turns include Gemma getting car-jacked, the home invasion crew being revealed, and Clay’s involvement in the invasions confirmed. Leave it to Clay and his devious nature as he continues with his own agenda. Many thought that ex-sheriff Unser would get killed off for uncovering the identity of the home invasion crew and knowing too much. Instead, Clay cleverly used him as a pawn to further his game plan. Jax convinces Tara to let Gemma take care of the boys so that they can go away to the cabin. Gemma -traveling along a country road with Jax and Tara’s kids in her Escalade -- weaves along the road and into the path of an oncoming truck. Overtired, stoned and sleepy, she swerves to avoid a collision, only to go crashing through a guard rail and down an embankment. All of us are left wondering what fate holds in store for them as all we see and hear is one frightened child crying and the other not moving and not making a sound as the scene fades to black and the SOA logo appears…

Bike tour through Morocco an eye opening experience By Heather Walters

J

oanne and Rob Perttula of Simcoe have taken their Harley on several road trips, across Northern Ontario, throughout parts of Canada and across a good many of the states. When a friend casually mentioned an interesting tour was being organized through the North African country of Morocco, they decided to contact a UK motorcycle tour company called Motocadia and literally the wheels were set in motion for a ride they would never forget. Morocco is on the continent of Africa, officially the Kingdom of Morocco, Al Maghrib. A population of nearly 44 million, its coast reaches from the Atlantic Ocean, past the Straits of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean. It has international borders with Algeria, Spain and Mauritania to the south. Their journey began in Malaga, Spain where they collected their tour bikes, met their follow tour riders, and prepared to ferry across to Ceuta, Morocco. Rob said that the first thing they had

to get used to was the bike itself – a BMW instead of their familiar Harley. Once they got a feel for that, they were off. This type of tour is not for the novice rider – rather, it is called “spirited riding,” for those with considerable experience as both the terrain and culture provided exciting challenges. Joanne talked about the first real cultural experience they came across, as soon as they disembarked from the ferry. Although the border crossing paperwork had already been arranged for by the tour, each of the many border guards took their turns “helping expedite the process” with an open hand and obvious bribe. Luckily, they had already been instructed to carry only small bills in their wallets, and “to never, ever, give up your passport!” It was also strange and slightly unsettling to both Canadians to witness so many armed troops with machine guns patrolling the area, but they passed through without incident and the adventure began. Each day of the two week tour, they travelled a good distance – between 250 and 300 miles. Rob stated that between the

Skinny, Ryder

Skinny - Wild Air Designs If you ride a motorcycle, Skinny is your Rembrandt by BRENT WAKEFORD Editor-In-Chief - TMT

When we think art, the average person thinks Rembrandt, Picasso, Monet-canvas, oil paintings and gallery pieces. But if you talk to a rider, they think pin stripping and air brushed designs depicting their personality, covering the tanks, tins and fairings of their motorcycles and trikes. In my early twenties I met Skinny, an up and coming air brush artist breaking into a business of very few talented painters. He saw the artistry of local brushers-Dennis, Ron Gibbs and Wizard adorning hot rods and home built custom bikes but it was the cool work and extreme talent of Kenny Kay that set Skinny on the path in life he wanted to follow. Armed with a ‘wild’ imagination, an eye for design and the steady hand needed to succeed in a world of creating art on a multidimensional canvas-he hung his shingle for “Wild Air”. Starting out in a small one room store front on Hamilton’s Main Street East, Skinny began his professional journey painting goalie masks, skate boards, guitars and bike parts in-house while travelling to produce large scale murals in bars like Mustang Sally’s and events halls. It wasn’t long before an expansion of the business was needed and thus continued over the years as his shops have grown to accommodate more

space for stock and the supplies needed to create one-off masterpieces-motorcycle art that has gone on to win countless “Best of Paint” awards and trophies around the globe. His artistic talents have been showcased in numerous magazines, on television and part of the Canadian Biker Build-off. Whether it’s the multi-layered themes of imagining, ghosting, flames or his talent for realism portraits, each new Wild Air creation leaps to new bounds. Like many veteran air brush and tattoo artists, his style is uniquely his own and unmistakable in the industry. Skinny is not content in just laying down lines, airing in skulls or pin striping in flames. He takes it a step or two further, adding in shadowing for depth and multi-dimensions, special effects with paint for colour flips or creating actual personalities in the skull’s expressions. He is old school talent with new world technology combined-using top of the line solvent based custom mixed paints-quality colours from the likes of Dupont and House of Kolor, to liquid masking, gold leaf and even presently experimenting with sea shell inlay. He really has no limited boundaries. For the last 22 years, Skinny has made a name for himself in an industry very few have been able to break into. It’s one part chemistry, one part patience, one part skill and a lot of trial & error -- learning as you go. A talented air brush artist is not born over night

and never satisfied with just okay. You spend thousands of hours learning your skill and countless hours on each project-perfecting it. After sitting with his clients and discussing their ideas, needs and budget, Skinny’s artistic mind takes over and the creative juices begin to flow. It’s long hours of prep, layout and design before you even lay paint to a part. Many artists have to envision the final product before you ever begin and only then can steady hands take over and the paint flow. Skinny is unique in his approach, knowing the difficulties of envisioning how all parts of a motorcycle will flow together with the paint theme, while individual parts are separated from the bke in the shop -- he has designed a jig to attach the pieces in order to see what they will look like once reassembled -- kind of a mocked up motorcycle. Fortunately for Skinny he has a very enthusiastic up and coming apprentice to assist in the mild-towild creations and learn from the master. “Ryder” spends countless hours at Wild Air learning this art and after Skinny and the customer are both satisfied with the work, the final phase begins of laying the clear and cutting and polishing all the parts. Nothing goes out the door of Wild Air until Skinny is happy with it. It’s not about reputation, it’s not just his business card-it’s his credo. Luke Air Force Base in Arizona was home to Senior Airman, Brian Russell Biggers for six years (from 1999 to 2006). Nowadays, Brian calls Springfield, Missouri, home and he is the owner and operator of a very successful tattoo shop named B-Ink’d. ‘I’ve been tattooing for 11 years and riding for 20,” Brian answered when asked about his life as a civilian. “Both of them are in my blood.” Brian’s first bike was a Harley and he’s never owned or ridden anything else. With that being said, Brian’s dream bike is actually a ‘rat rod’. “You know… ‘rat rod’… a bunch of separate things thrown together,” he explains. “Separate, they’re just a bunch of parts and pieces. Together? They become something personal, just to you; the best of everything you’ve ever known or experienced during the time you’ve been riding.” Brian’s current ride is a Harley Davidson Sportster 883. “At least, it started out that way,” he explains. “But when I say custom? I mean custom! It was built from the frame up. The frame itself was chopped and the swingarm has been extended 6 inches. The front end is a wide glide conversion with a rake, and the entire engine is built by hand from the cases up, with the biggest Cam you can put in them. It has after-market performance push rods and reverse dome high-compression Keith Black pistons. It has the biggest valves you can do on a Sporty and the heads have been flowed and ported and polished. This thing goes on and on and on...” Brian describes riding as ‘The Ultimate Freedom’. “Nothing else matters to me when I’m on my scoot! I wish there was a way that everyone could feel that at least once in their life,” he says. “Riding isn’t just something that I do; it’s a part of who I am. It’s a way of life.” Brian has a soft spot in his heart and his life for all things military. From tattooing The Soldier’s Creed on the outer thigh of a friend who had been mobilized to Haiti to offering discounts and special deals to those who have served, he is a great example of everything that is good when the world of tattoos and bikes ‘collide’. Thanks for your years of service, Brian… and Happy Riding!

A motorcycle’s suspension serves a dual purpose: contributing to the vehicle’s handling and braking, and providing safety and comfort by keeping the vehicle’s passengers comfortably isolated from road noise, bumps and vibrations. Most motorcycles today use telescopic forks for the front suspension. The forks can be most easily understood as simply large hydraulic shock absorbers with internal coil springs. They allow the front wheel to react to imperfections in the road while isolating the rest of the motorcycle from that motion. The top of the forks are connected to the motorcycle’s frame in a triple tree clamp which pivots to allow the forks to steer the motorcycle. The bottom of the forks are connected to the front axle around which the front wheel spins. On typical forks, the upper portion, known as the fork tubes, slide inside the fork bodies, which are the lower part of the forks. As the tubes slide in and out of the body they are telescoping, thus the term telescopic forks. The fork tubes must be smooth to seal the fork oil inside the fork, and typically have a mirrored finish, though some fork tubes, especially those on off-road motorcycles, are enclosed in plastic protective sleeves known as gaiters. Inverted forks are installed inverted compared to conventional forks. The slider bodies are at the top, fixed in the triple clamps, and the stanchion tubes are at the bottom, fixed to the axle. This arrangement has two advantages: (1) it decreases the unsprung weight of the motorcycle and (2) it increases torsional stiffness, which can improve handling. Two disadvantages of these forks are that they are more expensive than conventional telescopic forks, and they are liable to lose all their damping oil should an oil seal fail. Typically, these forks are found more on sport bikes. Motorcycle suspensions are designed so that the springs are always under compression, even when fully extended. Pre-load is used to adjust the initial position of the suspension with the weight of the motorcycle and rider acting on it. The difference between the fully extended length of the suspension and the length compressed by the weight of the motorcycle and rider is called ’total sag’ or ’race sag’. Total sag is set to optimize the initial position of the suspension to avoid ‘bottoming out’ or ‘topping out’ under normal riding conditions. ‘Bottoming out’ occurs when the suspension is compressed to the point where it mechanically can’t compress any more. ‘Topping out’ occurs when the suspension extends fully and can’t mechanically extend any more. Increasing preload increases the initial force on the spring, thereby reducing total sag. Decreasing preload decreases the initial force in the spring, thereby increasing total sag. Some motorcycles allow adjustment of preload by changing the air pressure inside the forks. Valves at the top of the forks allow air to be added or released from the fork; more air pressure gives more pre-load and vice versa. Some telescopic forks have external adjustments for damping. The adjuster controls a bleed valve to bypass the cartridge. When closed, all oil must travel through the cartridge; when opened, it allows some of the oil to bypass the cartridge, thus reducing

damping. Since forks also act as hydraulic dampers, changing the weight or grade of the fork oil will alter the damping rate. Heading to the rear of the bike, the basic motorcycle swingarm is a like a rectangle, with one short side connected to the motorcycle’s frame with bearings so that it can pivot. The other short side is the rear axle, around which the rear wheel turns. The long sides are connected to the motorcycle’s frame or rear sub-frame with one or two shocks, most often with coil-over springs. When a swingarm is present on only one side of the motorcycle, it is known as a single-sided swingarm. Single-sided swingarms make rear-wheel removal easier, although they generally increase the unsprung weight of the rear suspension; this is due to the additional material required to give identical torsional rigidity to a conventional (twosided) swingarm setup. On many shaft-drive motorcycles, the drive shaft is contained in one of the long sides of the swingarm. Some manufacturers combine a shaft-drive contained in the swing arm with a single-sided swingarm, and the combination is marketed as the ‘Paralever’. For motorcycles with chain drives, the rear axle can be adjusted forward and back in relation to the swingarm to adjust chain tension. The hydraulic shock absorbers used on the rear suspensions of motorcycles are essentially the same as those used in other vehicle applications. Motorcycle shocks do differ slightly in that they nearly always use a coil-over spring. In other words, the spring for the rear suspension is a coil spring that is installed over or around the shock. In terms of adjustment, rear shocks span the range from no adjustments whatsoever to pre-load adjustments only to racing shocks with adjustments for length, pre-load, and four different kinds of damping. Most shocks have internal oil reservoirs, but some have external ones, and some offer air-assisted damping. A number of companies offer custom-built rear shocks for motorcycles. These shocks are assembled for a specific motorcycle and rider combination, taking into account the characteristics of the motorcycle, the weight of the rider, and the rider’s preferred riding style/aggressiveness. Motorcycles with only one shock absorber are called monoshock motorcycles. The performance of monoshock motorcycles is vastly superior to twin shock motorcycles. Accordingly, this design distinction is readily used to categorize motorcycles. On a motorcycle with a mono-shock rear suspension, a single shock absorber connects the rear swingarm to the motorcycle’s frame. Typically, this lone shock absorber is in front of the rear wheel and uses a linkage to connect to the swing arm. Such linkages are frequently designed to give a rising rate of damping for the rear. Mono-shocks are said to eliminate torque to the swingarm and provide more consistent handling and braking. Having only one shock absorber, they tend to be easier to adjust than twin-shock systems. Many riders go through the life of their bike without ever changing the front end fluid or periodically checking their load sets, the air pressure or maintaining their forks and suspension at regular intervals. Like any mechanical component on your motorcycle, maintenance and service is required.

A Perfect Recipe for Time-Crunched Adventure Seeking Enthusiasts by GAVIN SMITH Contributing Writer - TMT When friends Dawn Larsen and Greg Powell paired their passion for adventure with their love for motorcycling into a timecrunched vacation schedule …it resulted in a fun-packed weekend tour of Northern Ontario’s community roadside attractions. Greg Powell, had just recently moved to Sudbury, Ontario to take on an intern position as Mine Controller for First Nickel and hadn’t had the opportunity to travel much through Northern Ontario. His friend Dawn Larsen, who owns Navigator Marketing was having her company’s busiest year ever with no opportunity for vacation. The pair lamented over dinner at a restaurant one night that they’d like to do something memorable during the summer but equipped with only their busy work schedules, their burning sense of adventure, a desire to travel and their imaginations they decided that a motorcycle trip through Northern Ontario visiting all the community roadside attractions might be the answer. Powell and his Honda Veradaro are no newbies to motorcycle travel. Powell travelled 10 months across the globe from Alaska to Argentina in 2011. “I was fortunate

to see some of the world’s most beautiful scenery from the mountains of Alaska to the penguins in Argentina,” comments Powell. You can read more on his adventures on his blog (www.gregsadventure.com). Powell searched the internet for travel ideas and soon came across a website that identified memorable roadside attractions all over Canada (www.roadsideattractions. ca/ontario.htm). Powell had also read that some tourists brought a tour mascot with them to include in their photos – like the Travelocity gnome so the pair decided to include Eor, the Disney character in all their travel photos as their travel mascot. The pair discussed the trip opportunity and they quickly solidified a plan for two weekends out. Powell mapped out a travel plan using google maps and www.roadsideattractions.ca/ontario.htm. The trip left Sudbury, Ontario on a Friday evening travelling to Marten River then finishing day one in New Liskeard. Day two had the pair leaving New Liskeard and travelling to Hearst. Day three started early Sunday morning from Hearst, through Hornepayne, White River, Sault Ste. Marie all the way back to Sudbury and the big Nickel roadside attraction. As the excitement built for the trip, Larsen posted the pair’s travel plans on face-

book and received overwhelming response back from facebook friends. “I was quite surprised that so many people were really interested in our trip and talked of doing something similar but never actually did it,” says Larsen. “We both thought the trip was exciting for us but that it might seem kind of cheesy to others, but that wasn’t the case,” says Larsen. “Many people asked me to share our roadmap after our trip was done.” When the weekend arrived for the motorcycle trip through Northern Ontario – the pair overcame oil pan repairs and time delays to finally roll out of Sudbury to start their motorcycle adventure. Their first stop; a large bass in Marten River. “It was great travelling with Greg because he is such a seasoned traveller and really has seen some of the world’s most dangerous road conditions. So I knew I was in good hands,” says Larsen. “When we finally arrived in Cobalt, it was too dark to take photos of the Tug Boat and the rail cars, so we headed into New Liskeard and back tracked to Cobalt in the morning to take our photos once again,” says Powell. “There were some breathtaking moments along the trip,” says Larsen. “The awesome scents of nature and awesome sunsets we experienced as we

travelled along the highway were so memorable,” says Larsen “We were fortunate to see a Sandhill Crane in just outside of Opasatika “walked across the highway and we doubled back to get into a position to take some great photos,” says Powell Northern Ontario has some hidden gems of communities with some great character and roadside attractions. Dawn’s favourite was Opasatika and the Pickerel statue. “I had never heard of that community. It was quaint and you could tell they had pride in their community. Honorable mention went to the skidoo tree in Val Gagne “I liked how it used imagination,” says Larsen. Greg’s favourite was the animal scene of moose and wolves in Hearst. Honorable mention went to the Rainbow trout in Sault Saint Marie. “I really enjoyed meeting the people from each community. Everyone was friendly and had a story to share,” says Powell. “We asked people to take our picture at most roadside attractions and we’d tell them what we were doing. They all obliged and seemed so intrigued with our trip, asked a few questions and shared some of their travel stories with us.” When the pair reached Earlton, they drove in a heavy rain and lightning storm. “I’m really sure that the people who make

rainsuits have never tried to put their product on in a rainstorm,” says Larsen. “It felt like I was neither graceful nor dry in the end of it all.” Eor the travel mascot seemed most at home in White River next to Winnie the Pooh. After each photo, Greg secured Eor back into one of the steel panniers attached to the motorcycle. Somewhere between White River and Wawa, Eor must have popped the trip box lid and escaped because when the pair got to Wawa both Eor and the pannier lid were gone, never to be found. “We joked that Eor popped the lid to stay behind with Winnie the Pooh in White River,” jokes Larsen “The highway from Hornepayne to White River was the pair’s favourite piece of highway because of the scenery, winding and hilled highway. “The waterways on the way to Sault Ste. Marie was some of the best scenery I have experienced,” says Powell “It was a great moment when a family came up to us in Wawa when they saw Greg’s bike sticker from Columbia. The young father and mother were from Columbia and shared with Greg their goal of getting back to their country again and their kids kept telling us about how excited they were to travel to Winnipeg.” After White River, it seemed like a competition for us to find more roadside attractions that weren’t on our list – bonus attractions if you will,” says Larsen. “I think we found an extra six attractions.” “We found a 30 foot T-Rex dinosaur in someone’s yard in Mattice “ says Powell. We knocked on their door to ask permission but they weren’t there, so we sneaked over and took our photos on the T-Rex’s tail,” says Larsen. “There were a few roadside attractions we couldn’t find as hard as we tried especially in Sault Ste. Marie” says Powell. “It was funny when we went into a community and we’d ask some locals for directions to their roadside attractions, some didn’t know they had one,” says Powell The pair travelled 1,698 km through 48 communities, took pictures at 57 roadside attractions while spending 23 hours on the motorcycle over 3 days while getting on and off the bike no less than 106 times for photo opps and rest breaks. The tour ended back in Sudbury at the Big Nickel at 10 pm Sunday evening. “The entire trip was so memorable from the outstanding scenery, to experiencing scents of nature, the wind against your face to the fun laughing and joking of getting on and off and on and off the bike so often to celebrating our successes of finding bonus attractions. It just was a fun and memorable trip,” says Larsen. “I highly recommend it.” “The Northern Ontario roadside attraction trip really met all our expectations to get a trip in by motorcycle, experience nature and the outdoors, have some adventure and a lot of fun along the way in a very short time frame,” says Larsen Powell has moved back to Toronto into his new role as C.F.O of Shear Diamond Corporation and Larsen went back to working long days at her business in Sudbury. “We are looking forward to doing a bike trip in thE fall to experience the spectacular fall colours, the smells and the crisp air that accompanies them,” says the pair

Harley Team Clinches NHRA Title

The Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle / Vance & Hines drag racing team clinched the 2012 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship as rider Ed Krawiec roared to his ninth Pro Stock Motorcycle win of the season and third in a row at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champion now leads the class by 111 points with one event left on the schedule. Only his teammate Andrew Hines remains in contention for the title. “What a great weekend for our team,” said Krawiec. “I had an outstanding Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycle to race and I’m relaxed and confident. There’s simply no pressure or stress when I roll up to the line. All I’m thinking about is going to Pomona with a chance to end the season winning four Wallys in a row, which I’ve never done.” Krawiec actually won two events at Las

Vegas. On Saturday he and Hines raced in the last round of qualifying to complete the final elimination round of the Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals, which was postponed by rain on Oct. 8 at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa. Krawiec won that face-off for his 19th career win and eighth of the season, and pulled ahead of Hines, his closest rival for the championship, by 51 points. Earlier in qualifying, Krawiec rode his Harley V-Rod to an Elapsed Time of 6.902 seconds to claim the top spot for Sunday eliminations for the fifth time this season. On Sunday, Krawiec made his last appearance of the season on a Harley V-Rod with a special Hard Candy Pink Flake paint scheme and matching leathers, the end of a monthlong effort to raise breast cancer awareness. For the season finale at Pomona, both Screamin’ Eagle V-Rods will revert to the traditional Black/Silver paint schemes.

Jorge Lorenzo’s journey to his two MotoGP™ premier class titles began at the age of three when he entered in minicross competitions in his native Mallorca, followed by junior motocross and a 50cc Copa Aprilia title in the Spanish Championship – an entry he was only granted with special permission. Lorenzo subsequently became the youngest ever rider to enter a World Championship race. Turning fifteen – the minimum age for Grand Prix participation back then - on the second day of practice for the 2002 Spanish race at Jerez, he made his debut on board a Derbi 125cc at a track where he would enjoy much success over the next few years. With the switch to 1000cc at the start of 2012 Lorenzo and his Yamaha made a terrific start by winning the opening round

Team Ducati Disappointed Despite working hard with their respective teams, Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden weren’t able to maintain a fast enough race pace to fight with the group of riders whose lap times they had approached over the previous two days. Valentino Rossi, 7th “As far as the result is concerned, I think seventh place is probably the best that was possible, whereas the gap could have been better. Nicky was with me the whole race. I was ahead and I pushed, but I was never able to shake him. The bike I crashed with in the warm-up had some small changes that we wanted to try, but honestly, I don’t think I could have done much more. I’m not able to enter the corners fast because whenever I try, I go too wide. I have to brake earlier, try to keep a bit of margin, and then accelerate as soon as possible, but by opening the gas very early, with the bike leaned over, the tyre heats up a lot on the edges. Today it immediately started sliding too much. Complements to Márquez and Lorenzo for their titles, which both of them certainly deserve.”

in Qatar after a hard fought battle with the Repsol Hondas. From that point on the Spaniard went on to take five further wins and ten second-places, only once failing to finish a race after being taken out by Álvaro Bautista in Assen. The race at Phillip Island proved a dramatic one as his main rival Dani Pedrosa crashed out early on, with Lorenzo needing only a three-point finish or more to clinch the title. He however didn’t hold back and climbed on the podium once more to take his second premier-class title. Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo made history in the AirAsia Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island today, as he became the first Spanish rider to win the premier-class title more than once, after coming second and securing an insurmountable 43-point cushion with one race left.

”Receiving advice is mostly about being listened to, and about being given permission to make up our own minds.”

Toronto’s only authorized Moto Guzzi, Aprilla, Vespa and Paiggio dealer and service centre New and used motorcycle sales, service parts and accessories.

— Cicero I’m fascinated by people who give you their opinion about something, and then proclaim with great authority that it isn’t one. You know the kind of people I’m talking about; we all have at least one or two of them in our lives who feel it’s their duty or obligation to tell us in no uncertain terms what they have to say, and then proclaim that what they have said is fact and not ‘fiction’. I suppose how you receive their ‘opinionated advice’ all depends on two things: Whether or not you trust them, and whether or not you respect them. I’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of advice and opinions since I became a part of The Motorcycle Times’ family. The past three months have been a whirlwind of activity, and for the most part, I have loved every moment of it. For the most part. The best of what I’ve experienced has been through the caring guidance and support from people I have never even met in person, or who I have had the pleasure of getting to know as I worked away on a column or attended a special event. I’ve had hour-long conversations (during KATchat – LIVE on the Times’ facebook page on Wednesdays from 8 to 9 pm) with Ken, Sylvie, Ranette, Shar, Don and many others. I’ve posted questions on the Times’ facebook page and received some wonderful feedback, suggestions and educated opinions. I’ve learned a lot about different riding clubs and the amazing work that many of them do on behalf of charities, through people like Mike from Windsor (The Lone Wolf Clubhouse), Keven from Hamilton (The NWRA, Steel City Chapter) and even Luke and the rest of the gang in ‘The Grinning Idiots’ from across the pond in South Wales. Whether asking for advice of a practical nature or for opinions on things like what bikes make great first rides to more colourful questions like “What’s the difference – or is there one – between being someone’s ‘b*tch’ and being someone’s ‘ol’ lady’, this girl’s foray into the world of riding has been quite the education. And, like I said, I’ve been lucky enough to have been respected, guided and supported by people who recognize that once you’ve been baptized by the wind and have found a place and a way to express your passion, you should be applauded for every little brave step you take further into that world. I’m not really sure what prompted someone I once considered a dear friend to feel that they had to send me an email and let me know exactly how they felt about my jumping into the motorcycling world with both feet. “Do you want that badly for people to associate you with the ride?” he asked in his letter. “If yes, you’re certainly on your way, and you’ve superceded anything that’s

reasonable. If not that, then you’ll certainly get points for being the world’s most vivid enthusiast. I guess the point of this letter (was) to tell you that I support someone enjoying a cool past time, but when they’ve taken it over the top and make it all they are, I’m totally turned off and it’s really *&^%$ annoying.” Well, you can imagine that I felt more than a tad knocked to the ground onto my fine yet ample behind after reading those words. Practical person that I am, I read and reread the letter several times, and searched my memory (and my facebook page and the Times’ facebook page) for clues as to what could have possibly created such a strong response in someone I thought I respected and trusted. Surely they’re wrong, I remember thinking. I thought I had been maintaining a healthy balance between all of the different pieces of my life, and was proud of the fact that I have a game plan in place and am sticking to that plan when it comes to things like taking a motorcycle course in the spring, saving up for bike insurance and learning as much as I can about myself and the kind of riding experiences I want so that I make the ‘right’ choice when it comes to buying my first bike. And then it hit me. Here was someone who had been, for all intents and purposes, my sole source of information and riding experience until I decided to take matters into my own hands and further explore the new world I was creating for myself. His letter didn’t have half as much to do with me as it had to do with him, although I’m sure he’d protest quite adamantly if I ever pointed that out to him. The hurt and the anger were gone in an instant. Words only have power if you give it to them. And people only have power if you trust and respect them enough to afford them space in your heart and mind. The Motorcycle Times’ family of riders, readers, advertisers and facebook friends all know and understand something that my former friend doesn’t: If you have the heart of a rider, you’re a rider. Your place on the journey isn’t as important as your desire to be on it. Passion comes in all forms and degrees of ‘force’, but having and living that passion out loud is what makes the journey all that more meaningful. Yes, I’m full of questions and fire and motivation. No, I don’t have a lot of riding experience and I don’t have my own ride…yet. But there’s plenty of time and plenty of wonderful people who have either been where I am right now or who are going through the same experiences together and right alongside me. I’ve earned my training wheels. I’ve earned your respect and you all have mine. Training wheels or not, we’re all riders. Thanks to everyone who has made it an incredible journey so far. KAT out!

Once upon a time, there was a big bad motorcyclist who created bedlam and wreaked havoc wherever he went. Woman fled and small children were shuttered away behind closed doors. Rebellion segregated him from young curious eyes. Children were allowed to remain children, if only for another day. That may sound extreme, but motorcyclists have been the subject of discrimination, harassment, and prejudice since the first ‘motorcycle’ was built by Gottlie Daimler in 1885. Maybe it was envy of its maneuverability, its vulnerability or simple uniqueness which brought the wrath of the automobile community upon those who became riders. As one’s natural tendency to gravitate towards ‘like minds’ led to the creation of motorcycle clubs -- where motorcyclists could ride together and find kinship in a common interest – society’s attitude towards motorcyclists became as varied as the people who took up the hobby. During the 40’s and 50’s, motorcycle clubs took on an entirely new meaning as returning paratroopers from World War II banded together to form biker clubs. This new form of motorcycle club tended to live outside the laws of society. Call it thumbing their collective noses at the rest of us and wanting to feel unique; and so, the ‘one percenter’ moniker was born. Needless to say, projecting a positive image about motorcyclists wasn’t at the top of their agenda and societal response was predictable. We’ve all met people who rode at one time or another but had to ‘give it up’ due to getting married, becoming a parent, and so on. I can’t recall how many times I’ve heard this when someone finds out I’m a rider; I don’t think they realize that they’re admitting their conformity to society’s prejudices. Some decisions are not made based on the economics of riding as much as on the perception of and judgement by society, a loved one’s definition of responsibility, and the behaviour that is expected once you reach a certain ‘life stage’. I’ve always made a mental note of this, and at the onset of a new relationship, made it very clear that motorcycling isn’t something that I do; it’s a part of who I am. When it comes to my life, you can’t have one without the other. When I was married (yes, I used to gamble), I was fortunate in that my wife wasn’t opposed to my passion about bikes. She saw it as somewhat reckless and dangerous, but never really questioned it too much. She knew it was part of the package she got when we got married and I appreciated her support. I was only too aware of the grief that some riders had to deal with after getting married and being expected to give up their ‘hobby’ for more ‘responsible’ ways to spend their time. Maybe it helped that her father was an avid motorcyclist in his younger years; he was the example by which she had evidence that you could be a rider and still be considered a responsible and successful person. A number of years later when I became

Views

divorced, I found that people viewed me differently as a ‘divorced motorcyclist’ than as a married one. I guess the perception was my irresponsibility simply couldn’t be suppressed any longer. It’s amazing how economics can often make people change long held prejudices and overall views. In light of the various conflicts with our surrogate parents (the Middle East) and the subsequent spike in fuel prices, society has had to ‘buddy up’ or ‘make nice’ with motorcyclists since the bottom line was at stake. Even though most were, and still are, too afraid to ride a motorcycle, they can at least see the economic reasoning behind owning one. I’ve had many people marvel at how little it costs to fill the tank on my Kawasaki ZRX1200, and the fuel mileage I get in comparison to their steel cages. It amazes me how quickly society can change its views with regards to specific sectors of the population; more specifically, motorcycle riders. For instance, some US states (ie: Michigan) allow bikers to ride without helmets. I was surprised when legislators in several states made it legal for a motorcyclist to ‘run’ a red light. The rider is only required to wait at a red light for what is deemed a reasonable amount of time – approximately two minutes – before proceeding through an intersection. This particular piece of legislation is becoming more widespread due to traffic lights that are weight censored. I’d hazard a guess that it is in these instances, and only these instances, where riders wished they weighed more than they do. I wish our government would respond likewise, although I’m sure our Prime Minister is too busy being conservative, while our Premier (of Ontario) has finally decided that the heat in the kitchen is definitely too hot. I never could have imagined any level of government, American or Canadian, being so logical when it came to motorcyclists. I recall one occasion when I was approaching a red light in Belle River, Ontario, at about two in the morning. I waited for at least ten minutes for the light to turn green, then realized it was utilizing a weight sensor. Needless to say, I found myself temporarily colour-blind whenever I came to that particular intersection under the same circumstances. I’m certain that our two wheel riding forefathers would have laughed aloud and called us crazy if we told them some of the things to come for motorcyclists: Permission to run red lights; being allowed to ride without a helmet; insurance companies offering lower premiums for riders who take an accredited motorcycle safety course. Motorcyclists being accommodated by government? Riders gaining respect from society for having foresight and vision when it comes to the responsible and practical reasons for riding a motorcycle? Being ‘cool’ in a non-threatening way? It seems the ‘big bad biker’ is an endangered species, my friends; perhaps even an ‘urban legend’ in the making.

Aeromach Mfg. Cruisin’Pegs Who says you can’t ride in style and comfort

by BRENT WAKEFORD Editor-In-Chief Every now and then, a product comes along that leads you to wonder how you ever lived without it. I recently had the pleasure of discovering an innovative motorcycle product that can not only eliminate a stock component on your motorcycle, but one that if not so factory equipped, will just make life on the road so much more enjoyable. The product? Aeromach Mfg. Cruisin’ Pegs! Aeromach’s patented floorboard mounted footrest system designed for metric and Harley-Davidson floorboards are not only practical but very stylish as well. Whether you’re looking to eliminate your existing crash bar highway peg set-up or add something to your motorcycle to get that ‘stretched out, comfortable ride’ for local or long distance travel, this is a product that can provide you with the answer to both wishes. TMT contacted Paul Aiken at Aeromach Mfg. in North Carolina after a subscriber inquired about an alternative to highway bars and pegs for his floorboard-equipped cruiser; the company shipped a set to TMT that very day. ‘Made in the USA’ was the first thing that piqued my interest. These set-ups are designed for riders who are 5’6” and taller who are simply looking for a more comfortable way to ride. The Aeromach USA Cruisin’ Pegs are built to reduce fatigue by providing an alternate foot location, and since the peg is beveled, your heel rests comfortably and secure on the peg. No matter your size or inseam, Aeromach’s Cruisin’ Pegs are the answer to the question of increased comfort in the saddle. The pegs are designed to mount to the underside of stock Harley Traditional or similar Indian floorboards, but are also available for the late model swept-wing style Harley boards. Cruisin’ Pegs have 3 position adjust-

ments: Up close (same distance as the brake pedal), Middle or ‘Way Out’ for riders who are 6’3” and up. When mounted to the floorboards, Cruisin’ Pegs have the same, clean look of a pair of forward controls and will also work with factory engine guards. They also come in three different styles: Smooth, Balled Mill or Tribal. Installation of the Cruisin’ Pegs took less than an hour per side, and the pegs came with a detailed installation guide, making this an easy step-by-step process, requiring only basic tools for installation. These beautiful, chrome-plated CNC machined T6 6061 aircraft quality aluminum parts scream of the craftsmanship that is synonymous with a precision part.

Accompanying the parts are top-quality hardware pieces (with nylon nuts that don’t require the installer to need lock washers).

After removal of the rubber upper footboard, we used the strengthening support plate as a template to mark the attachment bolt holes and step-drilled them out.

Once the plate was installed, everything moved along quickly, including the assembling of the mounting block under the floorboard, then the tribal flame arm then pegs .

We sat on the bike and measured for proper leg length by loosening the adjustment bolt and rotating the complete arm back and forth until we found the best of three adjustment holes that provided us with the suitable riding position.

The peg itself can also be adjusted by changing the camber of the peg, whether you prefer it further out or in. A quick tightening of all hardware, the re-installation of the upper floorboard, and we were off into the wind for a test ride. What a difference this product makes in riding position and comfort! The pegs were in just the right location, keeping the rider’s knees slightly bent, with no obstruction in

place for coming off the peg and onto the brake pedal or in to the shifter. They also had just the right angle to run the heel of the boot on floorboard and the tip of the toe on the peg (if that is your preferred riding style). The three different foot positions that are available when utilizing these pegs, were very comfortable. With vibration reduced by 40%, Aeromach is certain you will be satisfied not only with the look and finish of their highway pegs, but also with their fit, installation and performance.

Additional Points of Interest: Aeromach Manufacturing started out by manufacturing parts for M-1 tanks, helicopters and space shuttle components. When the aerospace industry started to slow down, then owner and founder, Richard Fouhy, began the construction of parts for his own ride; a 1981 Shovel Head. The company expanded by branding a line of bike parts. Just like any savvy entrepreneur, Richard took what he knew and expanded upon it to manufacture a quality product that became instantly recognized by the motorcycle community. Aeromach made its mark again when its design team created a line of mirrors that are not only incredibly functional but sharp to look at as well. In 2009, Aeromach was acquired by Mr. Paul Aiken and relocated to North Carolina. Today, the company is committed to carry on the tradition of quality products made in the USA that Richard established in the early days of Aeromach. In 2012, Aeromach became the exclusive US distributor of ‘Highway Hawk’ motorcycle parts and accessories. ‘Highway Hawk’ is based in The Netherlands, and is celebrating 41 years in the parts business. They have an extensive line of multi-fit as well as bike-specific accessories like mirrors, risers, tail light trim, light visors, lighting and much more. ‘Highway Hawk’ is available at local dealers across the US, as well as on line at www.aeromachmfg.com
