Pikes Peak Hill Climb drops motorcycles for 2020 after fatal crash

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is canceling all motorcycle categories for 2020 in the wake of a fatal crash this year. Rider Carlin Dunne lost control of his Ducati and left the road just short of the finish of the 12.4-mile time trial. Defending champion Dunne set the fastest time in qualifying and also won in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Defending champion Dunne set the fastest time in qualifying and also won in 2011, 2012 (seen here) and 2013. (Getty Images/Rainier Ehrhardt) An investigation determined that the accident wasn’t caused by a mechanical failure, and it is believed that the 36-year-old, four-time winner of the race lost control when he hit a bump. Despite the dangerous setting of the race, which winds up the Colorado mountain along a road lined with long drop-offs, there have only been seven fatal accidents in its 97-year history. Four incident involved motorcycle riders, three of which have taken place since 2014. The historic race took place on a dirt surface in its early years, but speeds increased and riding styles changed as it was completely paved between 2002 and 2012. The organizers released a statement announcing the move and said they are conducting an analysis to determine if motorcycles will return in later years. “It’s just time to take a hard look at every aspect of the race, including the motorcycle program, and determine whether or not the event may change,” Tom Osborne, chairman of the board of directors, wrote.

Yamaha’s Latest Flagship Yamaha Unveils New 2020 R1 and R1M Supersport Motorcycles Toronto, ON – July 13, 2019 – Yamaha Motor Canada is thrilled to announce the latest evolution of its flagship open-class supersport motorcycles, the 2020 YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M. Featuring a refined engine, augmented electronic control features, enhanced suspension performance, advanced bodywork, outstanding aerodynamic perfor-

Yamaha’s Latest Flagship

The new 2020 R1 and R1M come equipped with the next generation of Yamaha’s unique 998 cc inline four-cylinder crossplane crankshaft engine for refined performance. Returning features such as titanium fracture-split connecting rods and offset cylinders contribute to a responsive and potent character, while the cylinder head, fuel injectors, finger-follower rocker arms, and camshaft profiles are new for 2020. An all-new Accelerator Position Sensor with Grip (APSG) ride-by-wire system with Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) eliminates throttle cables and reduces weight while providing smoother throttle operation. The most technologically advanced electronics package in Yamaha’s supersport lineup complements the evolutionary engine of the new 2020 R1 and R1M. Yamaha’s proprietary six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) continues to be the key feature of the package, processing real-time vehicle attitude and

wheel speed data for the new Brake Control (BC) technology that gives riders the option to choose between two intervention modes for enhanced braking control. Riders can select a “BC1” setting for enhanced upright, straight-line braking, or a “BC2” setting for enhanced braking into corners, where intervention timing grows faster the deeper the lean angle becomes. A new Engine Brake Management (EBM) system also allows the rider to select between three levels of engine braking force to suit their individual preference or riding situation on the road

the new Öhlins ERS suspension package takes the R1M to the next level of performance. The base-model R1 also receives suspension performance enhancements courtesy of a new KYB front fork with a new internal shim stack design, and a KYB rear shock with revised internal settings. Together, the changes result in smoother suspension dampening paired with an improved feeling of contact and grip with the street or track surface. Redesigned bodywork contributes to higher-quality performance and a more comfortable rider fit. CONTINUED TO PG.09

or track. Both the BC and EBM settings are adjustable through onboard Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) and Yamaha’s YTRAC smartphone (Android only) and tablet app (Android and iOS). Premium Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension (ERS) has been a staple of the R1M’s chassis performance, and a new NPX pressurized front fork with a gas cylinder built into the front fork axle bracket, along with revised rear shock settings to complement the performance of the front fork, are features of the new 2020 model. With rider adjustability options through YRC settings and Y-TRAC,

scott macdonald EDITOR

I have been riding now approaching two decades and I really love motorcycles, I enjoy the solitude an afternoon or evening ride provides when you are at your stress limit and need to disconnect. It’s a passion that I never understood until I got into motorcycles, and is shared by virtually every rider, unfortunately that is where it seems the brotherhood ends. One of the things I enjoy, aside from riding, is people watching. I often find myself, especially when out for a ride stopping somewhere where people tend to visit and spend some time just watching what people do, how they interact with their surroundings, the others around them and even the weather. A couple of weeks ago I found myself on a ride through the Niagara Parkway and decided to stop for a refreshment and to give my butt a break while riding up Clifton Hill. I found a parking spot, got a refreshment from a local vendor, found a little spot where I wouldn’t interfere with the hordes of tourists walking up or down the hill, taking endless selfies with their heads on a swivel trying to absorb the spectacle that is Clifton Hill. I spent the better part of an hour just watching everyone, wondering how far they travelled just to see the falls. From time to time, while I was there, young children and even some grown men would have their picture taken beside my bike. It left me trying to figure out just what it was about my motorcycle that sparked their need to take a picture with it. I have to admit, it is a nicelooking bike, but I think it goes much deeper

The Brotherhood

than that. Bikers have always had a reputation, sometimes its good and sometimes bad but to those who don’t ride, those who do are a bit mysterious, maybe a “bad boy” but always revered as a risk taker. Depending on the person having their picture taken, for that moment I think they could picture themselves as that “bad boy”. Whatever it was, they always had a real grin on their face and I could see just for a fraction of a second a change in demeanour.demeanour Truth is, motorcycling is over fantasized by non-riders, they see something about it that gets their adrenaline flowing, as it did with me, but it’s something that’s not really there. Once I began to ride, my wife and I joined a local social riding club. We enjoyed meeting new friends along with all the social aspects of the riding club, but it soon became apparent that there was a dirty little secret in the motorcycling community. A secret that I was never really aware of until I began to ride. There is a prejudice amongst riders that runs deeps and fractures the whole community into little fragments of itself. Motorcyclists will tell you “it doesn’t matter what you ride, only that you ride” to your face but that statement has never been farther from the truth. What you ride appears to matter, especially if you want to be social within the community, but why? We all have the same passion, don’t we? Visit any local watering hole where your fellow bikers tend to congregate, take a close look and what’s going on. Bikes appear to be parked next to each other, but are they

really? Look closer and you’ll see that certain marques will tend to park together, reluctantly parked next to similarly styled motorcycles, while the sporty bikes keep to themselves usually leaving a buffer zone of empty space, then there are the “retro” café racer crew that gravitate to the sporty zone but are frowned upon if they get to close. It goes on and on and on. It’s ridiculous really, don’t you think? Sure, everyone has a preference of style, it’s what makes us unique, individuals, one-offs as it were. It’s what we all have in common, the passion for riding, it’s what the “brotherhood” is supposed to be all about, it’s what we celebrate. We teach our kids to not judge someone until we have walked a mile or 2.2 kms in their shoes. It’s high time we take some of our own advice and learn or at the very least try to understand each other’s passion rather than allowing those differences to divide us. One of the advantages of working in the media is access, I have had the opportunity to ride many styles of motorcycle over the years and have found that each bike style offers its rider a unique experience. Some styles I prefer over others and while I have settled on the style and marque of bike I currently ride, I have a better understanding and a respect for those who have chosen to ride something other than the style I ride. The ironic thing about prejudices within the motorcycling community is that a rider’s skin colour or ethnicity are not given a second thought. Enjoy the summer everyone.

chatterbox Lego & Harley-Davidson® Introduce Fat Boy®

(Vaughan, ON) July 9, 2019 – Today, The LEGO Group revealed its latest LEGO® Creator Expert model – a Harley-Davidson® Fat Boy® that will cruise into LEGO Stores globally on August 1, 2019. Developed in collaboration with Harley-Davidson, this detailed LEGO interpretation of the iconic Milwaukee motorcycle captures the beauty of the real-life machine with finishes, surfaces, and design elements created to replicate the full-size Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. Featuring 1,023 pieces of LEGO, the model comes complete with solid-disc wheels, teardrop fuel tank, integrated speedometer, and dual exhaust pipes. The finished model measures over 7 inches (20 cm) high, 7 inches (18 cm) wide and 12 inches (33 cm) long and features several moveable parts for owners to engage. Spin the rear tire to see the Milwaukee-Eight® engine with moving pistons and dual exhaust pipes, spring to life. Turn the handlebar, move the gear shift and brake levers, and flip down the motorcycle’s kickstand for easy parking. Finished with an authentic dark red and black colour scheme with Harley-Davidson logos on each side reflective of the 2019 Fat Boy motorcycle’s Wicked Red paint scheme, it is a perfect display centerpiece for any home, office, or anywhere to channel the inspiration to ride. “Bringing this Harley-Davidson motorcycle to life in brick form is incredibly exciting,” said Mike Psiaki, Design Master at LEGO Group. “The model truly captures the iconic design, advanced engineering and attention to detail of this iconic motorcycle, offering an immersive building experience and a unique collector’s item for Harley-Davidson enthu-

siasts and LEGO fans of all ages.” “It’s been exceptionally exciting for Harley-Davidson to collaborate with the LEGO Group - another brand that champions creativity and expression,” said Heather Malenshek, Chief Marketing Officer at Harley-Davidson. “Not only do we want customers to be inspired by the end result, we want them to enjoy the building process.” “The authenticity of HarleyDavidson design comes by sweating the details from start to finish.” said Brad Richards, Vice President of Styling & Design, Harley-Davidson. “We looked at every nut and bolt on the bike, all the finishes, and every small detail. Working with the LEGO team on this project allowed us to bring that same attention to detail to a collaborative product, and to celebrate a brand that inspired the imagination and creativity of many of us at Harley-Davidson from a young age, including myself.” To celebrate the launch, LEGO Master Builders created a life-size model of the motorcycle, complete with silver-coated parts, Wi-Fi animation control, sound and light effects to imitate a real Harley-Davidson Fat Boy and 6,000 special LEGO elements. The extraordinary creation took 865 hours to build, is made of 69,569 pieces and will be on display at select LEGO stores and Harley-Davidson events for fans to see. The LEGO Creator Expert Harley-Davidson Fat Boy model is available directly from LEGO Stores and shop.LEGO.com exclusively for LEGO VIP members beginning July 17, 2019, with general public availability beginning August 1, 2019.

Kawasaki may be Developing a Hybrid Motorcycle

We’ve been waiting for some time now for electric motorcycles to take the next big leap towards the mainstream. Thanks to the longstanding efforts of manufacturers like Zero, and HarleyDavidson‘s new push toward electrification led by the LiveWire, we’re getting closer to seeing that happen. Kawasaki, meanwhile, may be looking in a different direction, having filed a patent application for a hybrid motorcycle. The newly published patent application was originally filed with Japan’s patent office in December 2017 and subsequently filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office a year later. It describes a motorcycle equipped with both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The patent illustrations show a parallel hybrid system, meaning the engine and the motor work together to deliver power to the rear wheel. The patent explains, however that the concepts can also work in a series hybrid mode, where only the electric motor provides driving power and the gas guzzling engine acts as a range extender. A split hybrid system where either the motor or engine produces motive power is also described. The patent addresses one of the key concerns about hybrid motorcycles:

how to arrange all the various parts in a compact form. Hybrid cars offer multiple options for engineers to position the engine, motor, transmission, fuel tank and batteries; on a motorcycle, the options are rather limited. According to the patent, the AC electric motor (#4 in the diagrams) and combustion engine form a single unit along with the transmission, all sharing the same casing. The battery (#21) is located above the engine between the frame spars where a conventional fuel tank would normally be found. In this configuration, the tank (#15) can be mounted to the side of the seat or, alternatively, outside the frame beside the battery. In either case, the fuel tank is kept to the left side of the motorcycle, balanced with a coolant tank on the right side. In theory, this keeps all the heaviest parts close to the center of gravity. While the patent proves that Kawasaki has been working on a hybrid motorcycle, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll see one any time soon. Kawasaki has also filed multiple different patents for electric motorcycles over the years, and none have seen the light of day as yet, so don’t hold your breath for a production hybrid from Kawasaki.

For almost 15 years the first-gen Rocket III enjoyed its status as the motorcycle with the biggest engine in mass production. Apart from some notable exceptions such as the Boss Hoss customs, even the most eclectic and rare of motorcycles – for instance, the Münch Mammut 2000 or the Hesketh 24 – wouldn’t break over the two-liter mark. As soon as Triumph decided it was time for the Rocket to get an overhaul, there was practically only one way to go. The new Rocket changed the latin III for the Arabic numeral 3 and arrived in May 2019 with a similar three-cylinder engine, longitudinally placed in the frame, now boasting 2,458 cc (150 ci) and a considerable power hike. Triumph opted to kick off the second generation with the Rocket 3 TFC – as in Triumph Factory Custom – in a limited production run, but everyone suspected that a mass produced version lurked around the corner. The TFC batch of just 750 bikes worldwide sold out in less than two months, setting the stage for Triumph to lift the curtain on the “basic” Rocket 3. Interestingly enough, the mass-produced model doesn’t shy away from the impressive specs and gear of its now unavailable limited-run sibling. It may not be clothed in carbon fiber, it won’t enjoy the crunchy sound of the special Arrow exhaust system or those few bits and pieces that make the TFC stand out but, other than these, the new Rocket 3 is more or less the same motorcycle. It rolls on the same fully adjustable Showa suspension, stops with the same Brembo Stylema M4 brakes and, apart from a quick shifter, is equipped with an almost identical electronics package. Which, in tune with the Rocket’s raw image, incorporates just the basic systems: cornering ABS, traction control, selectable riding modes and a couple of treats in the shape of hill hold control and cruise control. Triumph also threw in a specialized software kit for GoPro cameras, incorporated in the Rocket’s TFT dash, along with smart-

phone connectivity via a Bluetooth module – but these were extras even in the high-end TFC Rocket, let alone the standard models. Producing 164.7 hp (122.8 kW) at 6,000 rpm, the basic Rocket 3 bites a bit softer than the 179-hp (133.5-kW) TFC variant; the difference should mostly be attributed to the stock exhaust system, instead of the TFC’s Arrow cans. The good news is that, in terms of torque, going from 225 Nm (166 lb-ft) to 221 Nm (163 lb-ft) doesn’t really register as a serious loss. Apart from the beefy gain in horsepower over the previous model’s 148 hp (110.4 kW), maximum torque appears to be the same, but now it’s achieved at 4,000 rpm, quite higher than the 2,750 rpm of the firstgen engine. The Rocket 3 will be produced in two versions, the R and the GT. The main distinction points to the riding ergonomics, as the R places the foot pegs in a mid position, whereas the GT puts the feet forward and sits the rider 23 mm (0.9 in) lower; seat height is 773 mm (30.4 in) and 750 mm (29.5 in) on the R and GT, respectively. In both cases the pegs are adjustable, vertically in the R and horizontally in the GT. Other than that, the GT boasts some extra equipment, such as a slightly higher screen, heated grips as standard (can be optionally fitted to the R) and an adjustable pillion backrest. The solid black color will be common for both variants, but each will also get an exclusive paint, red for the R and two-tone grey for the GT. Triumph claims that the new Rocket 3 is some 40 kg (88 lb) lighter than its predecessor, with 18 of them shaved off the engine alone. In fact, that is accurate for the GT version at 294 kg dry (648.2 lb), while the R turns out to be another 3 kg (6.6 lb) lighter. Pricing is set to be revealed on November 19, 2019, which will be a few days after the EICMA 2019 show draws its curtains. Production should follow.

It Pays to be Prepared — but if that doesn’t work, luck helps

By JOHN LEWIS The weekend before I was to leave for a 6,000 km trip to Nova Scotia, on an ideal day for a ride, I went out for a short 625-kilometre jaunt. The ride was going along perfectly—until it wasn’t. On Loop Road, about 24 km from Bancroft, my destination before taking a circuitous route back home, my V-Strom started to feel sluggish in turns. It would not hold its lean and generally required too much effort to do what had been smooth and easy all day. I pulled over at

St. Baptiste Lake Road, put my helmet behind my bike to indicate I was in distress, put my V-Strom on its centre stand, and removed the seat to get out my tire gauge. I kicked the front tire—not a very valid test as it seemed hard. I checked its pressure, and it didn’t even have enough pressure to register. My superior deductive reasoning skills kicked in. Aha! Herein lies the problem. A couple of BMW riders rode by and waved—just sayin’. A couple of minutes later Dan, riding a Honda ST1100, stopped and offered help. I told him I had a flat and he said that he had a tire repair kit and inflator. I think that he thought that I had been

sitting there awhile because when I told him I had these as well he looked at me as if to say, “Then why the hell are you just standing there?” No worries. He had no way of knowing that he had arrived just at the moment I had found the razorlike piece of metal embedded in my tire and just hadn’t gotten any further yet. I plugged my first motorcycle tire on the roadside. It was the first tire I had plugged since I had worked in a gas station when I was seventeen over 40 years ago. I rode gingerly for about 30 km. The bike’s handling seemed OK. I checked the plug and the tire pressure. It hadn’t lost any air and the plug seemed good. Even though I got home without inci-

dent, I was a little miffed as I had just put two new Bridgestone Battlax Adventure A41 tires on my V-Strom (I was really liking them—especially in the wet) towards the end of the previous season and they were for all intents and purposes still new. Some motorcycle tire companies recommend that you always put on a new tire should your tire get damaged. Bridgestone, I had read, holds to the view that a professionally done patch, from the inside and for only some kinds of punctures, is a safe repair. OK, I thought, this isn’t going to cost me too much. After all, I was just leaving for a 20-day trip to the east coast, and I didn’t need the extra expense. That’s why I was especially miffed

when I could not find a dealer or repair garage that would patch it—not because the damage was too great, they refused to do so sight unseen—but because they claimed they didn’t want to accept the potential liability. Well, I’ve experienced some of the shoddy work some of these shops have done in the past. I think they were blowing smoke up… well, let’s just leave it at that. I had bought my new tires last year at Fortnine and still had my receipt. I called them and pleaded my case. The sales agent agreed to give me a discount, and I went ahead and purchased the replacement tire. I had a mishap. I was prepared. I got through it. Now, with a new tire on my bike, I was ready to head out for this year’s adventure. But sometimes, in spite of the best preparation, it pays to get lucky. Especially when you’re unlucky. And unlucky I was. In Nova Scotia, on my way from Parrsboro to Cape Breton—I was making a mad dash so I could ride The Cabot Trail in nice weather—I pulled into Antigonish for some fuel for both me and my bike. When I came back out on the highway the bike felt a little funny. It wasn’t as obvious as my recent experience near Bancroft in Ontario. Sometimes things can feel awry because of an odd road surface and as soon as the pavement changes the problem goes away. So, I bided my time and paid close attention. It didn’t get better; it got worse. I pulled over at a level road crossing and was able to get into the cross street about five meters before the bike didn’t feel safe to ride another centimetre. I got off my bike and found that the rear tire was flat—not low in air, but rim to the asphalt. I flagged over a pick-up truck to ask the driver where I was so I could call CAA. He pointed at a sign. It was a billboard for a Yamaha dealer. I wondered why he was pointing out the local advertising. I said, “Yeah, OK, but first I got to get there, and for that, I need to call CAA for a tow.” He pointed again. I didn’t understand what he was going on about because the sign was surrounded by trees and bush; there wasn’t anything else there. He said, “No, that is the dealer. That is their entrance driveway.” It turns out that the dealer was 300 meters up the driveway and couldn’t be seen from where I was. Now it made more sense. I called the number on the sign, and a young guy came out with a truck and trailer and we took my fully laden bike into the shop. He didn’t have the tire I wanted so his staff took the time to call around. Apparently, there wasn’t a rear Bridgestone Battlax A41 Adventure tire in the size I needed to be found anywhere in Nova Scotia. If I wanted one I would have to wait five days for it to arrive at their shop as there was a weekend in the middle. Thankfully he did have a tire (another brand) that would fit, and I was on my way in just over an hour. I got to my planned destination not much later than I had originally scheduled. I was able to ride The Cabot Trail the next day—albeit nervously, on mismatched tires —in stellar weather, which was great because the following night the weather did a major turn and it was all rain and fog for days after that. I’d never had a flat before and now I had CONTINUED TO PG.12

two flats in less than two weeks—first, the front, and then the back. As I said, unlucky! But it could have been worse. If you’re going to get a flat tire on a major highway, in this case on Highway 104 just outside of Antigonish at Pomquet River Road, getting one about 75 meters from the entrance driveway to a motorcycle dealer is the way to do it. A little bit lucky, I’d say. But, luck didn’t solve everything. I didn’t like the handling of the mismatched tires. The new rear tire felt like it wanted to roll over in the turns. The front tire seemed to want to hold its angle, so I had this odd twisting feeling going on with the bike. Think flat track. The front tire sort of upright, the back tire skidding out. It didn’t do that but that’s what it felt like. The back tire never lost its grip, and I started to test it more aggressively, but it often felt like it was just about to. Eventually, I got used to it and pushed it further. As far as grip, it was OK. It was also good in the rain because I never once felt like it was going to slip out from under me—which is a good thing because I rode thousands of kilometres in the rain this trip. So, I purchased a replacement front

tire before the trip and I purchased the replacement back tire to give me a mismatched set during the trip. Now, I have to purchase a new rear Bridgestone Battlax A41 Adventure tire to get me a matched set again. Tires are tested together and perform best as a matched set. I really like how the Bridgestone Battlax A41 Adventure tires feel. I’ve ridden them on good tarmac, gravel, on uneven debris-strewn and broken asphalt, and pushed them aggressively in turns. I like the confidence they give me in the dry and the wet. Hmmmm? I wonder if Bridgestone might do something for me? I could cry in my milk, but instead I’m going to look at it philosophically. I could have gotten another flat tire even if I stayed home. It is a part of motorcycling. I had a great trip and am grateful to have had the opportunity to go. What I did learn, though, is that it pays to be prepared, as I was when I had the first flat, but when that doesn’t work, it’s awfully nice to get lucky. Oh, did I forget to mention all the sites I saw while I was on my trip, sorry I got distracted by my tire incidents.

Passenger 101

Being a great passenger is easy, with a little know how and practice.

By BRAD MARSHALL Riding as a passenger on a motorcycle, whether it be a cruiser, sport or any other style can be just as exciting as being the rider, if you don’t want to be incontrol. It can be an even more enjoyable experience for both if the passenger understands and follows a few simple rules. To be the kind of passenger riders want to ride with, remember the following tips: Wear clothing that will give you some protection in the unlikely event of a spill. As a minimum, you should wear footwear that protects your feet and your ankles, durable pants like leather or if lacking leather, a pair of good thick quality denim jeans, work pants, or something similar. For the upper body, an abrasion resistant jacket that zips or buttons up close to the neck either in good quality leather, nylon or denim will do in a pinch. Get some durable gloves, eye protection if your helmet isn’t equipped with a shield and of course a proper fitting helmet. A helmet should be a snug fit; it should not be possible to twist it around or shake from side to side on your head. The strap should be pulled as tight as you can get it. You should always attempt to dress appropriately for the weather. If you have not ridden very much, you probably do

not realize how hot or how cold it can be on a motorcycle. Starting out mid-day can tend to make riders dress only for the warm temperatures but if you stay out past sundown or travel near the lake, the degrees can drop fast and dramatically. Most people talk about wind chill in the fall and winter but it does exist for riders in the summer as well. A nice cool breeze sitting on your porch will feel alot different when travelling down the road at 80 clicks, so be prepared. On hot sunny days, if you insist on going without a jacket, at least, strap or pack one for later, if you can. One trick is to wear a long sleeve white shirt. It will reflect a lot of heat and help keep you cool. When nightfall approaches, the long sleeves will keep you warmer, longer. Before you attempt to mount the motorcycle, make sure that the passenger foot pegs or boards are down. Next, beware of the hot exhaust pipes. Make sure you know where they are, and don’t let your leg or any part of your body touch them as you mount or dismount the motorcycle. They can give you a severe burn right through the heaviest pants. It is customary to get on or off the motorcycle from the left side. Always wait for the rider to mount up first, have both feet on the ground and both hands on the bars. He or she will then upright the bike and steady it, first. Always wait for the rider to tell you it’s okay to mount or dismount. If you start to hop on or

off when the rider does not expect it, the sudden unexpected movement of the motorcycle can lay it down. The best way to get on a motorcycle, and the method almost all passengers should use is to put your left foot on the left passenger foot peg or board, with your left hand on your rider’s shoulder and other on backrest if equipped, then confirm it is okay to mount up and lean your body slightly over the motorcycle, gently step up until you can swing your right leg over the seat and ease yourself down. It’s an easy step up, right leg over to the other peg or board and lower down into the seat. To dismount, just reverse the process you used to get on. Confirm it is okay to dismount, stand up on the pegs or boards, hand on rider’s shoulder and step off the bike backwards to the left side and down. With a little practice, getting on and off will become second nature. Once you are on the motorcycle, plant your feet on the passenger foot pegs or boards and keep them there. You have no reason to remove your feet while riding or stopping at intersections. Your rider is aware of that and will keep the bike balanced for the both of you. Place your hands on the rider’s hips, grab rails, or centre strap if so equipped. Keep your weight centered over the motorcycle. Try not to move around any more than is necessary, particularly when the motorcycle is stopped, as it affects the

balance of the bike. If you need to adjust your seating position, let the rider know you need to move around, so they are prepared with adequate balance. Motorcycles turn by leaning (banking like an airplane), not by steering like a car. So don’t be alarmed when the motorcycle leans over, to go around a corner. To position yourself perfectly for a turn, just look straight ahead or over the rider’s shoulder in the direction of the turn. You don’t have to do anything else. Looking naturally over the rider’s shoulder will automatically put your weight right where it belongs in a turn. Keep your body in line with the rider’s body to prevent the motorcycle from leaning more than the rider intends. Never lean out in a turn, you’ll cause the bike to over steer. When the rider applies the brakes, it causes a forward weight transfer. If the rider is forced to brake hard, as in an emergency, this forward weight transfer is very apparent; you will be forced against the rider, and you will start to slide forward on the seat. Don’t panic. Try to keep back, away from the rider. Resist sliding forward by pressing your feet against the pegs or downward on the boards and use your thigh muscles to control your position on the seat. Likewise, if the rider is forced to swerve the motorcycle to avoid a hazard in the road, you need to be prepared for the sudden lean and change of direction. Okay, mount up and let’s ride.

By SCOOT CALHOUN It’s not very often that we can say that we have found a motorcycle clothing and accessories store that offers something special. In the case of Motocicletta we really can. Motocicletta is located at 2301 Appleby Line in Burlington and they stock a superb line of motorcycle clothing, helmets and accessories. Here is where you will find only the best clothing available. This includes jackets from the likes of Richa, Roland Sands, Vanson and Belstaff as well as helmets from Arai, AGV, Simpson and Bell. The clothing you will find here is, for Canada at least, very hard to find - unless you buy online from Europe. The point is that everything here is of the highest quality and for such a small store the range is remarkable. Motocicletta also offers a limited range of parts and accessories including all the essential lotions and potions you will need to pamper and maintain your motorcycle. Their clothing range was focused on providing gear that looks cool both on and off the bike. If you are looking for that all-in-one leather ‘power ranger’ suit this is not the place for you. If, however, you are looking to create the classic motorcycle look this would be the place. Motocicletta have also managed to capture the imagination of riders with their regular bike nights. There is ample parking and, on the occasions we have visited, these bike nights have been incredibly well attended. It’s not unusual to see over 200 bikes on these nights. What is amazing, on these bike nights, is that just about every genre is covered. You will see Harleys, Italian exotica, vintage bikes, sports bikes, custom cruisers and tourers. There will also be the array of home built cafe racers. It would appear that every type of rider is there and all are made very welcome by the people at Motocicletta. You can check out their website at www.motcicletta.ca to explore the clothing range and also get the schedule for the bike nights. We encourage you to give the place a visit and we guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Yamaha streetbike festooned with cameras, sensors, LEDs, a video screen and more. Damon calls this project the Advanced Warning System for Motorcycles, or AWSM. One reason (besides cost issues) motorcycle makers may be behind the curve on adding the collision avoidance tech Damon is developing is due to how motorcycles behave when ridden. Cars track mostly flat, even in curves, so all those sensors and cameras are usually looking where they’re supposed to all of the time. On a motorcycle, lean angles in turns can be pretty severe - up to 45 de-

grees - and that camera or radar sensor that was pointed at traffic a second ago is now seeing the ground very close up or is pointed at the sky. That, of course, is a big problem. But the Damon team has taken on the challenge anyway and the kitted out Yosemite Yamaha. It has several useful tech helpers on board, including blind-spot warnings, following distance warning and collision warnings. There was also a video screen showing a wide-angle view of what was behind the bike via a rearmounted camera. Instead of a data panel or head-up display of some sort, the AWSM safety suite has a thin LED strip mounted above the instrument cluster. Located just below the rider’s sightline, it illuminates in different colors and patterns to quickly convey information. Yellow bars on either side mean someone is in your blind spot. Following the car ahead too close make an amber stip activate, and a bevy of white and blue LEDs in motion guides the rider to a safe stopping distance behind a car at a traffic light The collision avoidance sensors trigger a series of red warning LEDs in tandem with a haptic warning buzz in the handlebars. And while I like the idea of being able

to see everything behind me while riding. I’m not sure putting a video screen on bike’s handlebars is the best idea, as it goes against the whole ethos of keeping your eyes up and on the road. Otherwise, the other ideas seem spot-on if they can be made to work reliably during all phases of motorcycle operation, including turns. It’s important to note that the Damon system is not yet designed to take corrective measures and “drive the bike” in the same way current car tech can do lane keeping, auto-braking and so forth. While self-balancing (and even selfriding) concept motorcycles have been shown by Honda, Yamaha and BMW, that kind of tech will take years to implement into production bikes just from a legal liability standpoint, let alone the technical sophistication they will require. But Giraud has a much, much longer view of the technologies Damon is developing. He foresees a time when riding data and accident situational data collected from Damon-ized AWSM bikes will work in aggregate with an AI algorithm and connected infrastructure to actually predict when an accident may occur and then work to prevent or minimize it.

for a variety of riding scenarios. Currently, reconfiguring the ergonomics on most motorcycles requires partial disassembly, buying parts and then getting them to fit correctly - something that can be problematic. The Midas bike with VRG makes it easy. Giraud, an experienced rider himself (as is most of his crew) and startup veteran, is genuinely chapped about the safety plight of the motorcyclist today versus cage, er, car drivers. Sure, higherend modern motorcycles can come with impressive tech suites these days, including traction control, ABS, cruise control and multiple ride modes (Sport, Urban, Rain, etc.). But after buying one of these cutting-edge digibikes, a rider typically has to drop hundreds or even thousands more dollars on safety gear, including a padded riding jackets, a decent helmet, riding boots, gloves, back protector and on and on. The gear is needed: Car drivers today are more distracted than ever before, so every safety advantage is worth investing in. What motorcycle makers have not heavily invested in so far, however, is adding car-style collision mitigation tech to bikes. That brings us to Damon Bike Two (Nickname: Yosemite), an off-the-shelf late-model

Ride Ontario

The most amazing roads, some where you’d least expect

By CHRIS HATCHER Some riders think the roads of Ontario, are FLAT but if you know where to go, you can find some of the best rural country roads packed full of twisties, switchbacks, curves and hills. For you new riders, please ride at your skill level, slow down and ride with caution until you are more famililar with some of these roads. Western Ontario Glorious curves, hugging the banks of the Thames River west of Chatham is like an oasis in the biking desert. Riverview Drive/Road 36 follows the south shore and the scenery is oddly lopsided, with broad plains as far as the eye can see to one side, and the rambling riverbank to the other. West of Prairie Siding the road passes Merlin Road 7. Merlin works his motorcycling magic here and the curves tighten for a fine thrash en route to Jeanettes Creek. Further west the road changes to Route 2 and straightens into gentle, loping bends towards Belle River. As an alternative loopback to Chatham, turn north on Jacob Road at the sign for Pain Court, cross the lift bridge and head east on Grande River Line/ Road 34. In English, Pain Court sounds like medieval torture but the town is actually a French name (pronounced Pan Coor) meaning “short bread”. The mists of time have obscured the true origin of the name. One theory is that pioneer folk would run short of bread during the winter until they were able to travel to Detroit by canoe for more flour. Grande River Line on the north shore of the Thames is less winding than the south route, with higher speed sweepers. To continue east of Chatham, follow

Grande River Line as it passes the intersection with Bear Line Road and changes to Grand Avenue/Road 2. On the east side of town, jog down Prince Albert Road 30 and turn east onto Road 39. This route follows the curving path of the Thames, and at Kent Bridge Road you can head south to rejoin Highway 401. Niagara Region On a clear day atop the west end of Ridge Rd you can see the entire Golden Horseshoe stretching around the lake from Hamilton, past Burlington and Oakville to Toronto. It is difficult to keep your eyes off the view, but fortunately there are a couple of pull-offs where you can park it for Kodak moments. For a quite a few kilometers, the road winds along the edge of the escarpment. Then the trees obscure the view and the road straightens away from the precipice. Just as you are about to snooze off at the controls, past the sign to Quarry Rd, your patience is rewarded with a magnificent fast sweeper (watch for hikers). At Rd 12 into Grimsby the road jogs and there are a few more nice twisties before it uncoils down Rd 514 into Beamsville. There are several places along the ride where you can turn and go down the hill on entertaining, steeply graded switchback roads. For example, if headed east on Ridge Rd turn left at McNeily Hill and ride down the escarpment, but go easy on the first 355 degree turn. Turn right at Hwy 8 and follow to Fifty Rd. Turn right and ride back up the escarpment to rejoin Ridge Rd. Regional Road 81 through the Niagara region provides a smooth, winding 2-lane alternative to the madness of the Queen Elizabeth Way, as it flirts with the edge of the Niagara escarpment. Many roads cut through the steep hillsides of this wine country, like 9th, Pelham, De-

cew and of course the infamous Effingham Road, takes you through the hollow which is a favorite of sportbikes and cruisers alike. This accounts for the large collection of bikes at the local bike hangouts on weekends. The region is home to many wineries that offer tours and tastings. But, please remember, if you drink, don’t ride. Southwestern Rendezvous at the Copper Kettle Pub in Glen Williams, and then depart the Main Street artist district into a world of pavement artistry. At Terra Cotta, Winston Churchill curves to the right to become King Street, which is semi-residential but features wonderful swooping curves. King Street is a fine way to traverse east-west above the suburban sprawl of Toronto, though for our purposes we head north up Creditview Road. After a quick left-right jog through a leafy glade, Olde Baseline Road offers a photogenic stretch of red badlands to the east, or a link via Mississauga Road to the Forks Of The Credit tour. Forks Of The Credit Road is an amaz-

ing motorcycle road. From Hwy 10 it rollicks up and down, crests an S-curve and carves its way through the Devil’s Pulpit escarpment to meet up with the Credit River. Crossing a bridge, the road snaps around a tight switchback as it climbs, and then twists along until it reaches the village of Belfountain. From here, the tight hilly corners of the side road leading north to the town of Cataract are highly entertaining, with a few rough and sandy spots. The two buildings on the right as you turn onto Cataract Rd. provide natural spring water for Canada Dry brand soda pop. Dating from 1855, the Cataract Inn is one of the few remaining buildings of the era. Experimental electric power lit the streets of Cataract in 1899, thanks to John Deagle who converted his grist mill into a power plant. These amazing roads and historic sites come with a price. Weekend visitors clog the area in the summer afternoons. Autumn colours bring even more hordes of tourists. CONTINUED TO PG.20

Ride Ontario CONTINUED FROM PG.18

The best time to come is in the morning or during the week. The other thing to watch out for is radar. Residents of the posh mansions in the area get tired of bikes screaming past all day long and the Ontario Provincial Police are often hiding in the bushes to keep a lid on the festivities “It’s worth the drive to Acton”, so goes the slogan of the Olde Hide House located in Acton. Check out the fashions at this leather mecca, and then explore as the road twists through rocky outcroppings at Limehouse. Early settlers in Ontario obtained cement from Limehouse, and the ruins of the lime kilns and quarry are accessible via a short walk along the Bruce Trail here. Sideroad 15 through Speyside fea-

tures random, tight left-right turns through pasture lands. Beware of the last westbound left-right transition just before Guelph Line; the inside corner of the right turn has a small dip that fills with slippery fine sand. Take an outside line but beware of oncoming vehicles cutting the corner. As well some sections of the route between Guelph Line and Trafalgar Rd were repaved, and the new surface is not as grippy as the old. South of the town of Milton (named after the famous poet in 1837), you will find a treasure trove of motorcycle roads on which to wax poetic. Appleby Line, Walkers Line, Guelph Line and Cedar Springs Road squiggle towards Derry Road 25 and Britannia Rd 6 like ants to a picnic. The switchback on Appleby Line north of Derry Rd 25 is coiled like a

rattlesnake, and it’ll strike if you don’t pay heed to the gravel in the corners. It leads to the Rattlesnake Point conservation area, and there’s a good view from the top of the hill before the trees get too thick in spring or after they thin out in the fall. Sideroads 2 and 4 winds between Walkers Line and Appleby Line. SR#2 passes through a leafy green canopy of overhanging trees, SR#4 through meadows and rural homes, and both span Bronte Creek. Westbound is the best direction for Sideroad 4 in order to see the imposing cliffs of Mount Nemo as you ascend into the foothills. The town of Lowville on Guelph Line is a popular destination, although the trendy brick pedestrian crossings may prove slippery in the rain for bikes. What more is there to say about a road

named “Snake”, other than it is aptly named and uncoils itself through a leafy green corridor between Waterdown and Dundas. The road surface is excellent but stay off the double yellow line that masks slippery tar strips. Waterdown takes its name quite literally from the way the water of Grindstone Creek flows down the escarpment at Great Falls. Captain Thomas Coote was the local duck hunter and in 1797 he laid out a town adjacent to his favourite marsh, naming it Coote’s Paradise. The marsh still goes by this moniker but the modern day town is called Dundas. Peterborough Area Headed east and slightly north and northwest of Bancroft, skirting the remote tip of Algonquin Park, runs an excellent motorcycling amusement. From the town of Maynooth, it begins west off Highway 62 as Peterson Road. Considering its rural venue the pavement is remarkably smooth and well-tended. Upon entering Haliburton County it changes to Elephant Lake Road 10, passes the scenic resort area of Elephant Lake, and terminates at Highway 648 near Harcourt. Have you ever been on the Swinger ride at the amusement park? You seat yourself in a bucket chair suspended on a long chain, and as the ride spins faster the chair tilts outwards like a human centrifuge. Provided you don’t hurl your candyfloss and Coke, the experience is similar to leaning your bike into a few of the many curves on Road 10. They just keep on turning and turning at a nice constant radius as the grin inside your helmet widens. Great fun, and the admission is free! Continue southwest on Highway 648 to Wilberforce, named after William Wilberforce who was a prominent antislavery advocate in 19th-century Britain. Head west on Essonville Line/Rd 4 which is a local “secret” motorcycling road that takes you to Highway 121. From here you can join up with Buckhorn Road and tour all over this area. I hereby declare Road 45 and Highway 503 to be the official bike corridor across Southern Ontario. Road 45 is also known as Monck Road, an early colonization road. This road has little in common with the parallel routes further south: Highway 7 is often clogged with summer traffic and Highway 401 is a high speed drone best left to minivans and small cars with oversized exhaust pipes. In comparison, Road 45 and Highway 503 wind entertainingly through lovely pine forests, past a few lakes, over hills and around long sweeping curves. Except in Orillia, traffic is almost non-existent and the route is dotted with towns for stocking up on gas or provisions. Take a day and explore Ontario roads, there’s more to see than you realize.
