Indian Celebrate’s Scout’s 100th Anniversary With Special Editions
100 years old and not a wrinkle. The year 2020 will set a number of milestones in the motorcycle industry. Aside from the flock of new models we’re expecting to kickstart the new decade, 2020. At Indian’s, there’s, of course, the Challenger expected to make its debut in the upcoming months. There is also a very special anniversary that’s about to be celebrated: the Scout will turn 100 and the company has every intention of celebrating. In fact, Indian is preparing one, maybe even two, special-edition Scouts for the model’s jubilee. The document lists an Indian Scout 100th Anniversary. The special model will sport the original, classic Scout look with the deep red livery and yellow pinstripes. Some sources also suggest that the Scout Bobber Twenty (for 1920) is also meant as a celebratory edition of the model’s history. The differences between your run-of-themill Scout and the two special editions will likely be mainly aesthetic. The Indian Scout was introduced as a 1920 model-year and became one of the most important models in the manufacturer’s history. At the time, the Scout was introduced with a 606ccV-twin. It evolved a decade later into what is referred to as Indian’s best motorcycle, the 101 Scout. Since the original Scout was launched in October 1919 as a 1920 model, maybe Indian is planning for a little something special for this upcoming October.

Low Rider S Rolls Out A Softail® Chassis, Milwaukee-Eight® 114 Engine Muscle, and Defiant Attitude. High bars and horsepower define the new Harley-Davidson® Low Rider® S model, a cruiser that takes a performance-first approach to customizing. The Low Rider S model is built around a Harley-Davidson Softail® chassis enhanced by premium suspension components tuned for aggressive riding stoked by the unrelenting power of a muscular Milwaukee-Eight® 114 engine, with styl-
ing cues inspired by the coastal build scene and Harley heritage. “The look of the new Low Rider S is really rooted in the legacy of the Low Rider models of the 1980s, that has a devoted following which has spread worldwide from origins in Southern California, and in the recent Dyna-based Low Rider S model,” said Brad Richards, HarleyDavidson Vice President of Styling & Design. “We’ve applied that coastal style and performance-first attitude to the
Softail chassis to create a Low Rider S that’s more powerful and agile than ever, with a heavy dose of tough-as-nails attitude.” Hard-Edge Coastal Style Raised hand controls are a defining element of the coastal custom influence. The Low Rider S model mounts a oneinch diameter motocross-style handlebar on four-inch high straight risers to put the rider in an aggressive and active position. continued on PG. 03

Low Rider S Rolls Out
A colour-matched mini-fairing frames the headlamp and blocks the wind when chasing down the freeway. A high back solo seat is shaped to hold the rider in place under hard acceleration. All bright finishes are replaced with black finishes for an aggressive look. The powertrain, primary cover and tank console are finished in Wrinkle Black; the derby cover, intake, and lower rocker covers are Gloss Black. Mufflers and exhaust shields are Jet Black. Forks, triple-clamp, riser and handlebar, and rear fender supports are Matte Black. The LED layback tail lamp has a smoked lens. The five-gallon Softail fuel tank features an iconic HarleyDavidson graphic. Radiate cast-aluminum wheels (19-inch front and 16-inch
rear diameter) are finished in Matte Dark Bronze for an intriguing contrast to the motorcycle’s dark components. Two solid colour options are available: Vivid Black and Barracuda Silver. The Softail Model Foundation The Harley-Davidson Softail motorcycle frame is a foundation for performance. The frame design is optimized to reduce weight without sacrificing stiffness while maintaining the classic look of a hard tail with a thoroughly modern ride. The rigid-mounted Milwaukee-Eight V-Twin engine contributes to a platform that delivers strong acceleration and responsive handling and braking performance. A single coil-over shock features emulsion technology and an optimized angle between the frame and swingarm for enhanced travel and response. Under-seat hydraulic pre-load adjustment allows the rider to maintain optimal suspension performance for the prevailing load and road conditions. A 43mm inverted fork stiffens the front end for improved response to
ing the familiar Harley-Davidson feel, while deep-breathing, four-valve cylinder heads and dual spark plugs squeeze the most power possible from every ounce of fuel. The engine is equipped with a Gloss Black Ventilator air intake with an exposed filter element to improve air flow into the engine, and 2-into-2 offset shotgun mufflers for an aggressive, performance look. Dealer-installed Screamin’ Eagle® Performance Parts Stage Upgrades from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories are available to boost engine performance even further. The 2020 Low Rider S model has a base price of $23,599* CAD. * Prices listed are the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices for base models. Options such as colour are available at additional cost. Prices exclude tax, title, licensing, registration fees, destination charges, added accessories, and additional dealer charges, if any, and are subject to change. Dealer prices may vary.
steering input. Single-cartridge internal technology responds quickly to inputs and keeps the front wheel planted for improved braking and handling performance. Fork rake is reduced to 28 degrees from the 30-degree rake of the standard Low Rider® model, resulting in more responsive handling. Dual front brakes with 300mm discs deliver stronger braking performance with less lever effort than the single front disc brake on the standard Low Rider model. Standard ABS (antilock braking system) provides confident braking performance when conditions are less than ideal. The Low Rider S model rolls on high-performance Michelin® Scorcher® 31 tires. Milwaukee-Eight 114 Engine Muscle The Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine (114 CID; 1868cc), the only engine choice for the Low Rider S model, delivers the most displacement offered in the Softail chassis from the factory, cranking out 119 ft. lb. of torque at 3000 rpm. A dual internally counter-balanced system reduces engine vibration while maintain-

The longer I ride the more I find myself wondering what it is that has driven others to take to two wheels. Fortunately, I do ride and when I stop for a refreshment, there seems to be an abundance of people who like to chat about motorcycles. I find that the people most forthcoming, at least to me, are people in my relative age bracket. There seems to be a mix of those who used to ride and those who have dreamed of riding but they all seem to a have the same quality; enthusiasm is in their eyes even before they start talking about motorcycles. One of the fellows who has stood out in my mind was an older gent, easily in his mid to late 70’s who happened to see my bike parked while I was enjoying a much anticipated coffee. He walked around my bike which at the time was basically stock and I could see the wheels turning in his head, after about his third time circling the bike he stopped and commented how beautiful he thought the bike was. He then proceeded to tell me about his long love affair with motorcycles. As a boy, he would get excited to occasionally see one of these 2-wheeled machines roaring past him along the gravel side roads where he lived, the riders scarves waving like banners in the wind and hearing the putt putt putt of its motor. What he would have given to have one, but in his words, he was just a
lad, too young for such machinery. As he got older, he met his future wife and had a family. Again he recollected about all the beautiful machines he would see from time to time and how he wished he would someday have one of his own but at the time, his children were young and his wife would never have approved. We continued chatting for some time about todays motorcycles and his questions to me were endless. I quickly realized that his questions were not so much about the bike, his interest was how it made me feel? What I had experienced, what I had seen and where I had travelled. I told him that growing up, cars were the fascination for me, but somewhere along the way the motorcycling bug finally caught up to me and hard. I went on to explain that I started late in life getting my motorcycle license and buying a bike to fullfill my dream. It was clear that he too had been bitten and I assumed that he finally did get his ride, but it was a dream he was never able to achieve. By now, my coffee was finished and our conversation was came to an end. I put on my helmet, shook his hand and wished him well. As I rode away I caught a glimpse of him in my mirror standing where we talked watching me ride away. It’s interesting to know what the catalyst was for each fellow rider I meet while rid-
The Bite
ing. Some time ago, I met a woman who was at the time very new to riding. She was not only an inspiration to me but also to most of the people she met while riding. At the time, married with two grown children, she found herself with time on her hands and not knowing what to do with it. Aside from those chores we all seem to be chained to, her free time became unsatisfying. Inspired by other females she saw riding, she decided to give it a go. She ended up getting her license, passing the safety course, then packed her bags, threw her leg over her new ride and with little to no plans she headed west on what would become an adventure of a lifetime, all by herself. Crossing the Rockies and ending up in Vancouver. She had fulfilled a dream she never thought was even possible for her. I think of them often when I ride, especially when I ride alone and all I hear is the putt putt putt of my engine and the wind whistling past my ears. The time spent chatting to people I have met while out on rides makes me realize how short life really is and just how important it is to allow ourselves to at the very least, try new experiences or things we think we have some passion for. You know the bucket list you have, pick one thing today, and JUST DO IT!

chatterbox Harley-Davidson Launches New Models and Technology
The new models and advanced technologies are components of the More Roads to Harley-Davidson plan to accelerate building the next generation of riders through new products in additional motorcycle segments, broader access and a commitment to strengthen dealers globally. “Harley-Davidson offers riders a host of new models, gear and accessories for 2020 as we leverage our unmatched ability to blend style, performance and technology in products designed to elevate the motorcycling experience,” said Jeff Strunk, HarleyDavidson Consumer Product Portfolio Director. “This year Harley-Davidson offers more choices for riders than ever before.” The LiveWire model is an all-new, allelectric motorcycle; an exhilarating and evocative new model designed to offer the rider a high-performance motorcycling experience infused with a new level of technology, and the premium look and feel of a Harley-Davidson product. Propelled by the immediate torque of the H-D™ Revelation™ all-electric powertrain, the LiveWire motorcycle is capable of rapid acceleration with just a twist of the throttle – no clutching or gear shifting required. From 158km / 98 miles of range**, performance is optimized for the urban street-rider. The LiveWire is the first in a broad portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed to establish Harley-Davidson as the leader in the electrification of motorcycles. The Heritage Classic motorcycle drapes the Harley-Davidson Softail® platform in pure nostalgia, and for 2020 it has been re-styled, exchanging the blacked-out look of the previous model for bright finishes to give this bike a more-appealing look to riders who love the gleam and sparkle of rich Harley-Davidson chrome. Re-styled components include a bright powertrain with chrome air cleaner and covers; chrome steel laced wheels; chrome headlamp bucket and auxiliary light buckets, bright fork legs and chrome fork covers and nacelle; chrome rear fender struts and side covers; a chrome console; a polished stainless steel handlebar with a chrome riser and top clamp; and a full clear windscreen with chrome support hardware. The Heritage Classic is powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 107 powertrain and is mechanically identical to the 2019 model. Features include lockable and sealed hard saddlebags, a detachable windscreen, a two-piece skirted seat and pillion with black studs, and standard cruise control and Antilock Braking System (ABS). Colour options include Vivid Black, Billiard Burgundy, two-tone Silver Pine/Spruce and Billiard Red/Vivid Black. The Heritage Classic 114 powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine will retain the model’s original, blacked-out look. H-D™ Connect service introduces subscription-based cellular connectivity to select Harley-Davidson motorcycles to keep riders connected to their motorcycle through their smartphone using the latest version of the Harley-Davidson™ App*. The H-D Connect service allows owners to connect remotely to their motorcycle and view key vehicle health information. It also provides the owner with the reassurance of being able to remotely monitor their motorcycle’s security, including tamper alerts on the Harley-Davidson® App and stolen-
vehicle assistance. The Reflex™ Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS) is a new collection of technology designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration and braking, utilizing the latest chassis control, electronic brake control and powertrain technology. The RDRS features are standard on the 2020 LiveWire, Trike and CVO models, and optional on all 2020 Touring models in the U.S. The new Road Glide Limited model replaces the Road Glide Ultra model for 2020 and offers new premium luxury-touring features, including painted pin striping, a gloss-finish inner fairing, heated rider hand grips, Slicer II Contrast Bright wheels and new tank, front and rear fender medallions. The Road Glide Limited model is a longhaul, two-up touring specialist featuring the distinctive aerodynamic Road Glide shark-nose fairing with triple split stream vents that limit rider head buffeting. The standard Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine delivers smooth, powerful touring performance while dual Daymaker® LED headlamps offer outstanding night visibility. Premium Touring suspension includes an easy-adjust rear shock pre-load for a smooth, confident ride. Reflex™ Electronic Linked Brakes with ABS deliver confident braking performance. The Boom!™ Box GTS infotainment system with colour touch screen offers navigation, communication and entertainment options. The new Black Finish Option for the 2020 Ultra Limited and Road Glide Limited models gives these models a sinister blacked-out look direct from the factory. The Black Finish package includes: Slicer II cast-aluminum wheels finished in Gloss Black, fuel tank, front and rear fender medallions with a Gloss Black fill surrounded by a Charcoal border, Gloss Black powdercoat powertrain, covers and exhaust plus black Tour-Pak® luggage carrier hinges, latches and rack, a black console, footboards, handlebar, gauge trim rings, hand control levers, mirrors, and foot controls, black LED Daymaker headlamp, trim ring and LED fog lamps (Ultra Limited only), and black fork lowers, fork covers, engine guard and saddlebag guards. New standard Antilock Braking System (ABS): The Reflex™ Brembo® electronic linked Antilock Braking System (ABS) that was previously optional on some Touring models are now standard on all 2020 Touring motorcycles. ABS is designed to prevent the wheels from locking under braking and helps the rider maintain control when braking in a straight line. The new CVO™ Tri Glide® model joins the CVO™ Limited and CVO™ Street Glide® models in the portfolio of limitedproduction, super-premium CVO motorcycles for 2020. Created for discerning customers, CVO models offer show-stopping finishes, advanced technology, exclusive components and attention to detail that borders on obsessive, engineered and assembled to factory-quality standards and backed by the Harley-Davidson® warranty. The Milwaukee-Eight® 117 powertrain – the most displacement and power offered from the H-D factory – is exclusive to CVO models. (See separate CVO release for full details on all CVO models).
Elvis Presley’s Harley-Davidson Electra Glide could Break Auction Record
Elvis Presley’s last motorcycle, a 1976 Harley-Davidson FLH 1200 Electra Glide with just 126 miles (203 km) on the clock, is going to auction later this month at GWS Auctions, and is estimated to sell for between US$1,750,000 and $2,000,000. The current world record price for a motorcycle at auction was set last year when Bonhams sold a Vincent Black Lightning for $929,000, but a spate of celebrity motorcycle sales in recent times suggests the Elvis Presley provenance could result in the sale of the most expensive motorcycle in history. The Electra Glide was only ridden very sparingly by Elvis, and will go to auction showing just 126 miles on the odometer. The bike has been on display at the Pioneer Auto Museum in Murdo, South Dakota, for over 30 years. Motorcycles once ridden by entertainment superstars have been breaking records in recent years with Rock & Roll’s original bad boy, Jerry Lee Lewis, selling his 1959 Harley-Davidson FLH Panhead Duo-Glide for $385,000 at a Mecum auction in 2015. While “the Killer” is without doubt one of the most famous performers of all-time, his cred on the auction block pales compared to “the King.”
Another high profile motorcycle, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s HarleyDavidson Fat Boy from Terminator 2: Judgment Day fetched $512,000 at a Profiles in History auction, beating out the Jerry Lee Lewis Panhead DuoGlide, and Pope Francis’s 2013 HarleyDavidson Dyna Super Glide (€241,500 / US$327,000) as the most expensive modern day Harley-Davidson to sell at auction. The Terminator Fat Boy also became the second most expensive Harley-Davidson ever to sell at auction, behind only a 1907 Harley-Davidson “Strap Tank” Single ($715,000), indicating that celebrity provenance is key to the price a motorcycle fetches at auction. Other examples of superstar provenance considerably enhancing the value of motorcycles include Marlon Brando’s 1970 Harley-Davidson FLH Electra-Glide that sold for $256,000 at a Julien’s Hollywood Legends auction, Buddy Holly’s Ariel Cyclone 650 that fetched $450,000 at a Guernsey’s Auction, Fonzie’s Triumph Trophy 500 from Happy Days fetching $179,200 to become the most valuable Triumph ever sold, and Steve McQueen’s Husqvarna 250 that sold for $230,000.
BMW Recalls G310 GS and R
BMW’s G 310 GS is among its most affordable options, being built in India rather than Germany, but now it’s having problems with its braking system. BMW’s motorcycles have a well-deserved reputation for being high-quality machines, but even the famed Motorrad isn’t immune to the odd recall every now and again. This time, it’s got to do with some of the brand’s more affordable offerings. Specifically, BMW Motorcycles announced earlier in August that it’s recalling certain 2019 C 400 X scooters as well as 20182020 G 310 GS and 2017-2020 G 310 R motorcycles over concerns that the pistons in their brake calipers could corrode and cause the
system to stick in their bores. The brake calipers in question were produced by Brembo’s value-oriented Indian subsidiary Bybre (for “By Brembo” -- get it?), which are also used on more-affordable motorcycles from the likes of KTM, among others. The fix for this issue simply involves getting your bike to your friendly local BMW Motorcycle dealer and having them swap your brake calipers for new ones. This repair is, like all recalls, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in early October, but owners of affected models can contact BMW customer service.

Motorcycles, like cars, have many similarities in their history that may not be apparent just by looking at them. Take the Japanese “take over” in the late 1970s by manufacturers like Yamaha or Kawasaki. While British bikes like the Triumph and the Vincent had the market for quite a long time, these bikes were notorious for electrical issues that were the bud of many jokes. The Japanese however, found a better way to “make a wheel” or in this case two wheels! Honda 1980 Gold Wing Interstate Think of this bike as the Cadillac of motorcycles. It’s luxurious and comfortable. The ride is really refined and is made for the road trip. With extra plush seats and room for two, this bike makes comfort fashionable. It was also influential in setting the standard on motorcycle accessories with frame-mounted fairing and luggage. Ducati 1994 916 Italians are known in the bike industry for producing both stylish and performance capable bikes. Ducati is no exception especially in terms of designing a true piece of rideable art. The 916, while not the fastestselling or the best selling bike on the market, comes out on top in terms of form and function. The design of this sportbike is masterful in its blend of purposeful mechanical detail like its under-seat exhaust design that has set the tone for sports bikes even to this day! BMW 2019 R 1250GS The R1250 GS is the only “hybrid” bike on the list. It’s not an alternative fuel bike (although these bikes are known for getting magnificent mpg.) This model is a road/ off-road machine that’s capable on nearly any terrain! So much so that it’s been voted as best bike to own in a post-apocalyptic world! It’s extremely reliable and powerful yet still has a refined ride for when you
cruise into town for the zombie parade! Honda 1969 CB750 During the 1970s the motorcycle world saw a big shakeup from an unlikely place, Japan. Until this bike came on the scene, they were only known as copy cat manufacturers, not trendsetters! Well, this bike changed the pecking order of who dominated the bike industry. Honda produced a four-cylinder powered bike that was smooth and affordable to purchase. In fact, it only took 4 years for this model to soar in sales of 6o,000 per year! Kawasaki 1977 KZ 1000 Riding on the wave of Japanese bikes pushing their way on to the once British and American bike scene, Kawaski introduced its KZ line. Specifically the KZ 1000 in 1977. This bike featured a 4 cylinder 5 speed that put out 90 hp making it the fastest bike of its era! It was so fast Police departments used them in their line up as late as 2005! BMW 1932 R32 While BMW is a powerhouse today, not only motorcycles but cars as well, it wasn’t always that way. Prior to aircraft engineer Max Friz’s design of the Boxer Twin engine in the R32, the company was only pennies away from bankruptcy. Once the riding public saw what the R32 brought to the table in terms of innovation and performance, BMW solidified its place in motor history. Friz’s innovations were so well designed and executed they are still in use today! Like the recirculating wet sump oil system. Indian 1953 Chief Few bikes are as iconic as the 1953 Chief. While these bikes were also wildly popular to the public, the business of bikes in the boardroom was another thing altogether. This brand also suffered from financial woes and was shuttered after this model year hit the floor. While many attempts to CONTINUED TO PG.17

Roadside Attractions A Perfect Recipe for Time-Crunched Adventure Seeking Enthusiasts
By JACKIE KENNEDY We are all busy but we need to make time and put in the effort for ourselves once in a while. It can’t be all work and no play. If you have a burning sense of adventure, a desire to travel and a little imagination than this is the perfect ride for you. Plan a trip through Ontario visiting all the community roadside attractions, maybe a little cheesy, but ooooohhh so fun. These are in no way all of them, nor are they in any particular order. These are not all roadside as well so a little exploring might have to be done. Some are difficult to find but that is what makes this so much fun. St. Thomas Dumbo and railroad lore enthusiasts will want to drop by the city of St. Thomas to take a peek at their Jumbo the Elephant statue. Jumbo, ‘The King of Elephants’, was the star of ‘The Greatest Show on Earth,’ the Barnum & Bailey Circus show. On September 15, 1885, Jumbo was performing in St. Thomas, a busy railway junction, when he was struck by an approaching steam train and tragically killed. On the 100th anniversary of Jumbo’s death, in 1985, St. Thomas erected a 38-tonne statue as a tribute. Port Carling This 111 x 45-foot photo mosaic provides a stunning welcome to Port Carling and serves as both public art and a public archive. The mosaic project began in 2004 and consists of 9,028 pictures. Each photo is a snapshot in the lives of
Port Carling residents during the village’s first century, from 1860-1960. Put together, the mosaic creates an image of the RMS Sagamo passing through the Port Carling locks c1922. The mural, which was supported by the Township of Muskoka Lakes, received a built heritage award from the Muskoka Heritage Foundation in 2007. Toronto Nestled within Toronto’s Canoe Landing Park, a privately funded urban park in downtown Toronto, you’ll find ‘Red Canoe’ by Douglas Coupland. The park, which opened in 2009, was created in collaboration with the city, architects, and artists. In addition to Coupland’s canoe, visitors will find large fishing bobbers, a sculptural beaver dam, a pair of ‘iceberg benches’ and the heart-shaped stone artwork, which was cast from a stone collected by Terry Fox’s brother at the end of his journey. The Canoe, visible from the Gardiner Expressway, is large enough to hang out in – landlubbers, rejoice. Wawa It’s not a Canadian road trip without a Canadian goose sighting. This Canada Goose, situated over the junction of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 101, dates back to 1960. The last section of the Trans-Canada Highway was finally completed, linking Wawa to Sault Ste. Marie and Western Canada. What’s the best way to draw people to your town? With a giant Canada goose, naturally.
The steel monument is a nod to Wawa and its large iron ore mine, and with Wawa meaning ‘Wild Goose or Land of the Big Goose’ in Ojibway. You’ll find it at the junction of Highway 17 and 101. Sudbury The Big Nickel is, well, big! It’s 64 million times larger than the nickel you’d find in your pocket. The huge coin was originally built in 1964, just outside of Sudbury city limits, because builder Ted Silva couldn’t obtain a permit for such a large build in town. These days, you can learn about mining at Dynamic Earth, right next to it. Mattawa Big Joe Muffraw - Joe is a French Canadian hero from Ottawa Valley folklore, who has a Paul Bunyan-esque background. Canadian authors have written about Big Joe, and described him as a strongman, a logger, and defender of the oppressed French Canadian loggers. He can be found towering at Explorers Point in Mattawa along with 11 other statues.
Moonbeam There really is a BIG flying saucer outside the Welcome Centre in Moon-
beam. Moonbeam got its name from the pioneers who often saw flashing lights in the sky, which they called “moonbeams.” Those flashes came to be
known as the Northern Lights. Cochrane When you roll into Cochrane, you’ll be welcomed by the town’s mascot, Chimo. Cochrane is home to some real polar bears at the Polar Bear Habitat and it’s the starting point of the Polar Bear Express, the train that travels to Moosonee. Manitou The BIG bison is located off of Highway 11, just as you enter the town of Earlton. He used to stand guard at the entrance to the Earlton Zoo, which is no longer in operation. Iroquois Falls Standing 20 feet tall, an axe at his side, Guy-Paul Treefall -- nicknamed “The Storyteller” or in French, “Le Raconteur” -- is a massive lumberjack beckoning tourists into the small paper mill town. The lumberjack is a tie to Iroquois Falls’ forestry history, which is the reason for the town’s existence. The sculpture was crafted by artist Denys Heppell from Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. Although his gesture may be questionable, still make for a good photo op. CONTINUED TO PG.12

well in Canada was not discovered in Alberta, but rather in Lambton County, Ontario more than 150 years ago! In 1858, while looking for water on the banks of the Black Creek near Sarnia, oil was unexpectedly struck. The first oil well in Canada was soon erected in Oil Springs, Ontario (formerly known as Black Creek) and become the first oil well in North America to supply a steady flow of crude oil. Thorold, Ontario The slab of stone next to the Lock 7 Viewing Complex on the canal is emblazoned with the words: “Kissing Rock.” Sailors heading out onto Lake Erie or Ontario would drag their wives and girlfriends to this spot for a farewell smooch. The War of 1812 was going great for the U.S. until they got here. That’s when a ragtag group of British soldiers, Canadian militiamen, and Indians routed the American army in a sneak night attack at Stoney Creek, on June 6, 1813. The Yanks ran all the way back to the New York border, and never got this far

By MARK WHITEHOUSE For those of us who enjoy the world of motorcycle racing, it’s impossible to talk about it without acknowledging the remarkable contribution that Ducati have made over the years. Like so many others, I have been passionate about Ducati ever since Carl Fogarty took to the World Superbike stage, astride the mighty 888, and went on to win the championship. There was something magical about witnessing a small, low budget race team [factory Ducati] taking on the might of the Japanese superbike teams and winning against all the odds. It was the motorcycling equivalent of a Cinderella story and, as a young boy, I was mesmerized as the story played out. For my generation, the story of the Ducati 888, and subsequently the 916, allowed us to watch racing between motorcycles that we could actually own and ride for ourselves. This made racing so much
more accessible and personal to motorcyclists. It’s hardly surprising that World Superbike increased in popularity enormously during that time. Naturally, ‘King’ Carl Fogarty went on to achieve remarkable success throughout his career. Personally, I will always associate Carl’s finest achievements while he was astride a Ducati, especially the 916. In fact, it was Carl Fogarty who inspired me to take up motorcycle racing in the first place. The Ducati 888 was replaced in 1994 by the breathtaking Ducati 916 - which was designed by Massimo Tamburini. For an entirely new bike, it is staggering that the 916 started winning races almost immediately and Carl Fogarty was there to ride it in the World Superbike championship. So much has been said about the 916 so it is suffice to say that it is, and remains, one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever made. But it wasn’t just a beautiful bike, it was also a great performer. The 916 Superbike went on to win 120 races, 8 constructors’ titles and 6 riders’ titles, four of them with Carl Fogarty. The 916 has also stood up really well to the test of
The Ultimate Ducati
time. Even by today’s standards the 916 is fast, looks superb, sounds amazing and still draws a crowd of admiring onlookers. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the iconic 916, Ducati has released the Panigale V4 25° Anniversario 916. This special edition is limited to 500 units and is actually based upon the current Panigale V4S. However, there is quite a list of exclusive elements that distinguish this Ducati from all the others in the Panigale lineup. There are components from the Panigale V4R - including the front frame, dry clutch, track specific electronics, Ducati’s quick shifter and traction control. The titanium exhaust is provided by Akrapovic, the wheels are magnesium Marchesini’s and the list of carbon fibre and billet aluminium components is very long indeed. To complete the look, the Panigale V4 25° Anniversario 916’s colour scheme is based upon the Ducati 996 Supebike, which won the 1999 World Superbike Championship. What this all means is that the Panigale V4 25° Anniversario 916 has 1103cc, weighs a mere 381 lbs and
pumps out an earth-moving 214 bhp. These stats are simply mind-blowing. For example, the BMW S1000RR (‘M’ package) weights in at 426.6 lbs, and produces 201 bhp. To illustrate further just how stunning the Ducati figures are, this Panigale weights less than the Yamaha YZF-R6 but has approximately twice the BHP. For those cynics out there it’s easy to say that this Panigale V4 25° Anniversario 916 has virtually nothing in common with the original 916 … and those cynics would be absolutely right. They are completely different motorbikes, with completely different engine configurations - the original 916 is a V-twin whilst the Panigale is a V4. Furthermore, the Panigale’s engine is not even 916 cc. The frames too are completely different. There are some similarities though, such as the singlesided swing arm, the Brembo brakes and, of course, there’s that wonderful colour scheme. However, none of that truly matters. What does matter is that both bikes represent the pinnacle of technology. Back in the day, the original 916 was
15 – The Motorcycle Times, September 2019
launched onto a world stage that had never seen anything like it before. Right from the word go, the 916 was greeted with unanimous critical acclaim and heralded in a completely new generation of super bikes. The same can also be said for the new Panigale. What the two bikes do have in common is the emotion they instill. Both the original 916 and the Panigale manage to deliver a total package of ground-breaking technology, combined with revolutionary high-tech performance, stunning design and desirability. Let us also not forget that Ducati is paying an appreciative nod to their racing heritage and this, in and of itself, is no bad thing. For me, this very special Panigale serves as a reminder as to why I have such a love affair with Ducatis. They are exotic machines that capture hearts and minds, and tune us into our raw emotions. In a world where there is so much beige, it’s inspiring to know that there are passionate people out there that apply their craft to bring us such aspirational machines. The result of all this is that the Ducati Panigale that looks and sounds spectacular. The fit and finish, coupled with the incredible attention to detail, is nothing short of remarkable. This is automotive art at its very finest, successfully showcasing Ducati at the very top of their game. Sure, the Panigale V4 25° Anniversario 916 is not quite as powerful as the exquisite 234 BHP Panigale V4R, weighs a whole 1kg more and manages to cost an additional $3.5k. But that’s the price of exclusivity and Ducati’s racing heritage. In my opinion, the paint scheme alone on the Panigale V4 25° Anniversario 916 justifies the additional price. Furthermore, with both bikes coming in at way over 200 BHP, that is more power than most of us will ever be able to use, and that’s just degrees of excellence anyway. It’s inevitable that this remarkable motorbike will instantly join the ranks of all the other iconic limited-edition Ducatis of the modern era - including the 2006 Desmosedici RR, the 888 SP5, the 916 SPS, and the Panigale Super Leggera. Now wouldn’t that just be an amazing stable of thoroughbreds to own? I can’t imagine that many of us will ever see the Panigale V4 25° Anniversario 916 in person. Our best chance will be to see one at a motorcycle show. Only a very small number will ever get to ride one and even fewer will actually have the chance to own one. But that too doesn’t really matter. What does matter is the fact that Ducati has equipped this Panigale with a dazzling array of technology that provides us with a glimpse into the future. The primary difference between the original 916 and this Panigale is the application of all this technology. Where the original 916 was a raw unforgiving machine, requiring an expert hand to manage, the Panigale is seemingly effortless to ride - even for an intermediate rider. There is no doubt that this very special Panigale is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of anyone who will be lucky enough to own one.

revitalize the brand were made only Polaris’ latest venture seemed to achieve success. Reintroducing its retro styling of the 1950’s Indian is now a thing of the present. Its unmistakable style and performance that made the Chief popular to begin with, was now offered to a much deprived riding public with a large appetite for yesteryear styling. Triumph 1960 T120
In the 1950s and ‘60s, the Brits held a dominant position in the motorcycle world. One of the most influential of them being the T120 by Triumph. The bike was a pleasure to ride since it was lightweight, had good torque with a top speed of 110 mph! It was so cool even A-listers like Bob Dylan and Steve McQueen rode these two-wheelers! There are few bikes that were trendsetters garnering attention from some of entertainment’s best. Harley Davidson 1949 FL Hydra Glide
This bike is eye-catching as it is a true classic. Few other bikes set the bar for style and mechanical innovation like this one. The FL Hydra-Glide is still one of the most imitated bikes around as it captured both timeless style and performance. Utilizing an 1100 cc panhead engine and first of its kind hydraulic fork it was ahead of its game in terms of handling and performance. Vincent 1948 Black Shadow Many of the motorcycles on this list made it because of their actual direct contribution
to the biking world once it splashed its way on the scene. The Black Shadow was a standalone bike because of what you can say was a “foreshadow” of what was to come in terms of future design. Attributes like a “frameless” chassis, a mono rear shock, adjustable controls to name a few, put this bike well ahead of its competition. With a top speed of 125mph, it was no slouch either! Powered by a 1000 cc engine Vincent really made its mark on history with this model that will endure for many years to come.

Backroads — It’s What Makes a Good Ride Great
By JACK MARTIN Every year a friend and I head off on our motorcycles for what we call our annual “once-in-a-lifetime” road trip. At least that’s how I always sold it to get the ok to go. As you can imagine this usually brings on the appropriate “ya, uh huh” response from my family. I’m apparently that transparent (so my patient wife tells me anyway). So off we go…one week, two guys, warm June weather, and an unspoken goal to hit as many Waffle Houses as we can find in the US. On these trips, two things are certain: 1) we go to great lengths to plan out where we want to go and what we want to see, and 2) we rarely stick to the plan. There are a number of reasons that we go off route; avoiding bad weather, trying to make up lost time, or something shiny catches our attention (we are men after all). Unfortunately this has also resulted in us missing out on some riding areas that could be considered the local Mecca of motorcyclists and road enthusiasts. This year we decided the theme to our trip should be the road less (and in fact for us, “not”) traveled. Our goal was to try and ride a number of routes that for various reasons we had missed on other trips and to do it using state/back roads as much as possible. Even with our trip mapped out and the GPS loaded, our final tour looked significantly different from the plan…but that’s half the fun of
taking off on the open road. We did have one goal that was non-negotiable however…to ride the “Tail of the Dragon” in the southern Appalachian Mountains. That was a must. Given the time we had available, we hustled south to Nashville,TN. From there we took a more leisurely approach east to the Tail of the Dragon, continuing on through back roads to the east coast, north across the Chesapeake Bay and then back home through the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania. The trip didn’t disappoint. We managed to get into the most scenic country going through a number of small towns with fantastic restaurants and quiet motorcycle-friendly hotels. During our tour we met riders that gave us some great recommendations on other sites/routes to take, and we altered our plans to take as much of it in as we could. Our trip began with an experience almost too good to be true. After a day and a half of interstate riding we pulled into Nashville. The temperatures for that area in mid June were topping out in the 35 - 39oC range and it was as sticky as they come. We pulled into a hotel, just a random choice, and found that sometimes you just luck into situations that you just couldn’t plan any better. The gathering around the hotel pool was the type of material that Budweiser commercials are made from. The scene was set: a large group of friends from Alabama all gathered in one corner, riders from Mississippi on the other side, folks coming in from all over, getting together, sharing some drinks and having a good
time by the pool. In the middle of all this was a band from Memphis staying at the hotel that showed up poolside with their acoustic guitars and bongo drum. They had had the crowd laughing, dancing, and singing in short order. Not a bad way to spend your time in the summer sun. After a bit of a late start the next day, we began our bikers “pilgrimage” toward the Tail of the Dragon. An hour east of Nashville, we left the I40, and for a greater part of the remaining trip, interstates in general. Heading east on state roads gave us a welcome change of pace from what we’d experienced the whole ride so far. Quiet roads, little traffic and lots to take in and see. If you’ve not ridden the Dragon, you’re missing out. Riders from all over, including outside of North America, make their way to this part of the Appalachians to ride this road. In an 11 mile stretch on US129 the route boasts 318 curves, some sweeping but many are tight switchback curves, while you make your way up the mountainside toward the Great Smoky National Park. The road has a few pull
offs to stop and take in the view from the crest of a mountain, and there are a handful of gas stations, motels and restaurants on either end of the route. Deals Gap is at the eastern end of the route in North Carolina and Punkin Centre (just outside of Maryville, TN) at the western end. Both offer lodging, restaurants and gift shops worth checking out. Even beyond the eastern and western ends of the Dragon there are a number of small “mom and pop” motels and restaurants that really cater to the riding community. A word to the wise while riding the Dragon; keep your eyes to the road, and take it easy the first time. Deals Gap has the “tree of shame” for those that have wrecked their bikes on the route with hundreds of scrap parts attached to the trunk or hanging from the branches. The speed limit is posted as 30 mph for most of the route, but that doesn’t stop the sport bike riders from trying to get their best time on the road, knee to pavement, putting the engine and gears through an extensive workout. Backroads — It’s What Makes a Good Ride Great CONTINUED FROM PG.18
Just check your favourite internet search engine for “Tail of the Dragon Photos” and half of them are of people that have gone off the road. Respect the road and the speed limit (the State Troopers run a tight ship in the area too), and you’ll be fine. We rode through fully loaded with all our gear and still had an entirely memorable ride. Don’t forget to smile as you round each bend...there a few local photographers that will snap off a few quality pictures of you as you come around the corner then post it on the web for purchase at a later date. Just beyond the Tail of the Dragon is another route worth exploring. The Cherohala Skyway is a state road that runs from Tellico Plains, TN to Robbinsville, NC. If you’re east riding along the Dragon, take the 129 to Robbinsville and turn west on Route 143 back into Tennessee. This road runs along the top of the Appalachian Mountains and has a number of wide sweeping curves, amazing overlooks with panoramas of the forest for miles in all directions, and the quiet peaceful
nature that comes from a well maintained road in the middle of nowhere. Riders we met that gave us the tip said they preferred this route to the Dragon, and I’d have to say I agree. Local restaurants and souvenir shops offer maps of circle routes and day trips on the area roads that put the Dragon and the Cherohala together in one enjoyable day of riding. We had made our “base camp” for this part of the tour in Bryson City, NC about a 20 minute ride from the base of the Dragon. In town we found a motel which was clean (albeit dated), functional and inexpensive motel that’s run by a nice family with a real aim to please the riding crowd. They have your standard amenities such as clean rooms, laundry facilities, and an outdoor pool, but they also offer the facilities to wash your bike and add a few little extras that make the stay worthwhile. It rained through the night we stayed, but in the morning we came out to see towels the owner had placed on our seats to soak up the water before we rode out. Little details like
that explain why the large percentage of people staying there were on two or three wheels. Leaving the incredible mountain riding behind was hard to do, but it was time to head to the east coast. We passed through a number of towns on the way east, but one in particular that stands out was Mount Airy, NC. Turns out Mount Airy was the childhood home to Andy Griffith and reportedly the inspiration for the community of Mayberry and the location of the Andy Griffith show (yes I’m dating myself). You can’t help but see the town has gone to great lengths to preserve the look and feel of this early Smalltown, USA era, even if there are a few modern roadside blemishes like large billboard signs for Aunt Bea’s diner or Floyd’s Barber shop. On our way through town we passed a couple old Ford Galaxie Mayberry Police Cars, for a fee will take you around the city. Our journey to the east coast was via some of the most scenic and well maintained roads I’ve had the privilege to ride. SR 58 in Virginia runs just north of the North Carolina border and has even more small towns, new pavement, greasy spoons, and open air with very little traffic. After a relaxing days
make our way to the Virginia Eastern Shores. The CBBT is actually a combination of three bridges and two tunnels, complete with a viewing area and visitor centre, gift shop and restaurant built out in the bay, right on the bridge before you enter the first tunnel. It’s a great spot to pull over and check out the commercial container ships and naval fleet moving in and out of the bay. The trip back from the Eastern Shores took us through the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania. I’ve ridden those roads so often now that it’s like coming home. The winding roads carry you through the mountain valleys and over the crests offering impressive views of the surrounding landscape. The cool breeze was more than welcome after a week’s worth of riding in the hot and humid temps. If you’re looking for a nice alternative to interstate travel to make your way north/south through PA, Highway 15 is the road to take. Much of it is four lanes, and reportedly is going to be a future Interstate, but for the time being, the ride is nice and traffic is typically light. In what seems now like a blink of the eye, we were home again. Not bad for a week’s worth of riding, and another successful week in the saddle. Inter-
ride, we made it into Norfolk, VA with impeccable timing of course…right into rush hour traffic. Hot and humid was an understatement. Hoping for some relief from a breeze off of the Atlantic, we quickly headed out north on the US13 toward the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel (CBBT) combination to
states can be a good ride, and convenient to get where you’re going. I’m not going to say I don’t smile while I’m hustling along at 120 km/h leaned over in a wide curve. Trust me though; back roads riding…it’s not just for weekends anymore.
