New Electric Motorcycle with 360º Radar & Rear Camera

Damon, a new motorcycle startup from Canada, has rolled out an electric motorcycle prototype showing off the company’s new tech. The company has taken an innovative approach that offers safety and rider-awareness features not yet seen in the electric motorcycle industry. Vancouver, Canada-based Damon is taking a high tech approach to safety. The bike itself appears to be powered by a Zero Z-Force motor, though it is hard to tell which one. And while specs regarding the performance of the company’s electric motorcycle are still sparse, it’s the tech that is perhaps most interesting at this point. Damon’s halo electric motorcycle prototype is packed with tech including 360º radar to monitor traffic around the bike, embedded crash detection sensors and 1080p forward and rear-facing live view cameras. There’s a flexible curved OLED screen in the dash running Android OS to allow the rider to monitor the rear-facing video feed. And if a car moves into the bike’s blindspots, LED warning lights alert the rider. Vibrating handlebar grips also provide a more intense warning when the bike senses that a collision with another car or object may be imminent. continued on PG. 15

BMW’s New Super-Cool Concept

BMW’s own take on the cruiser using its latest boxer engine.

BMW have unveiled an all-new, stylish classic cruiser that looks set to take on Harley-Davidson in the near future. The R18 concept bike is a radical machine and shows that BMW are keen to woo cruiser and custom bike buyers. Stripped down and raked out, the Concept R18 is not only a statement of BMW’s intentions, but also

what their designers and engineers are capable of. From the total lack of switchgear, to the fishtail exhausts every single detail of the bike has been meticulously considered. “This bike is not about being the fastest,” says Edgar Heinrich, BMW Motorrad Head of Design. “This bike is about making an analogue statement in a digital age. BMW has a rich history of iconic motorcycles and they bear the same design characteristics. We believe

that this can still work well today, together with current technology. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the R18 engine – BMW gave one to Custom Works Zon and another to Revival Cycles to get their take on it – but it’s the first time we’ve seen anything from the mothership. BMW say that this bike is a tribute to the original 1936 R5 and more recent R5 Concepts, but with a bit more meat in the continued on PG. 03

BMW’s New Super-Cool Concept engine department. The 21in (front) and 18in (rear) wheels give it a classic stance and the much-loved leaf-shaped saddle looks like it’s come straight of a 1950s Beemer. The rest of the bike is dripping with stylish touches such as polished head covers, subtle shading and the teardrop tank. Even the pinstriping and Metzeler Rille tyres give it that cool custom vibe. Then there’s the completely open shaft drive, cantilever suspension, open carbs and a tiny LED light nestled between the fork legs. Even if you don’t like the style, you can appreciate the workmanship. BMW have admitted that they are planning a whole range of cruisers

later this year. Until now BMW’s heritage range has made do with engines from existing models, so to create a whole new engine platform for one bike seems unlikely. We’ve already seen spy pics of a big

bagger but it’s possible BMW will also present smaller, stripped-back bikes to compete with Harley-Davidson’s everpopular Softail range as well as the likes of the Triumph Bobber. BMW have said they will unveil

the production bikes later this year, most likely at the EICMA motorcycle show in November but if this tantalising taste of what’s to come bears any resemblance to the finished articles, we’re going to be in for a treat...

scott macdonald EDITOR

For some time now, the motorcycle industry has been trying to figure out a way to re-invent itself, to build strong customer loyalty and to simply sell the iron on their showroom floor. Some blame the economy, some say that Millennials are not interested in two wheels, while others say electric is just the thing to spark new life back into motorcycling. I am sure the bean counters hired by those companies that have an inkling to build an electric for their showrooms have told them (with very stern voices) that investing millions into developing an electric motorcycle will be the end of all their worries. It may be the end all right, but it won’t be their worries. I have to admit I was a bit curious about electric vehicles in general and had a rare opportunity during some of the early days of Tesla to take a prototype of theirs for an evaluation drive. It was impressive, the power was instantaneous and substantial not burn the tires off type of performance, but it was firmly plant your butt into the seat type of acceleration. And to think, all that power and not a single drop of gasoline was required. Ahhh, it’s a bright green future for our planet with all its creatures big and small. OK, let’s not get feeling too warm and fuzzy just yet, nothing comes without a cost to the environment, including electrics. Sure, the end user gets the perceived benefits of driving/riding something that does not pollute directly, but manufacturing those greenies does, and there inlies it’s dirty little secret. And, let me ask, what are you gonna do when those batteries die? Is it landfill time or will someone find a way to refurbish them? Just like they have with all the cellphone batteries, right? I’m not trying to pee on anyone’s campfire, but I think some realities need to be discussed before the motorcycle industry in Canada specifically, and globally in general start celebrating their collective genius.

I Just Don’t See It…

Has anyone asked a rider what their thoughts are on this subject? Have any of the manufacturers done a focus group study? Let me just think about this for a minute, please tell me if I’m losing my marbles, but for most motorcyclists, it seems to me, sound is a HUGE part of the appeal. Harley-Davidson knows the importance of sound especially because theirs is distinctive. In fact, they have placed so much value on the sound of their V-Twins that they attempted to trademark it’s potato-potato sound so that no other manufacture could replicate it. Then there’s the feeling just after you start up your bike and twist it’s throttle a little, you can feel the vibrations tingling through your body, you know you’ve got a tiger by its tail. I can’t imagine the excitement you’ll feel the moment you slide the key in your electric bike and start it. Shhhh, wait for it… hear that? Exactly, nothing! Ok maybe a wimpy little beep or some synthesized chime will let you know that you are now in operational mode. Thanks for the heads-up Poindexter. Let’s not forget about the whole riding experience, using the clutch, shifting gears, twisting the throttle, the roar as you launch down the open road, oh yeah, that’s what I’m talkin about. It’s that wake up the dead and let them know you have arrived kind of sound that no electric will ever come close to providing as you swooooosh-bye at a respectable 53kp/h. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-electric, I am pro-motorcycles and if the addition of an electric model or two gets more people into riding, great, but I think it’s really a matter of economics for most people. And then there is the spousal effect which every married guy knows all too well. For those “single guys” the spousal effect is a decision-making process whereby a guy’s spouse will be asked a question, immediately thereafter the question is posed, the spouse gains veto author-

ity and can have serious impact on the plans he has made within his peer group. Assuming all systems are go and you have a green light to make a motorcycle purchase, two factors will come into play, cost of purchase and insurance. Cost of fuel and range are rarely a consideration to most buyers, and why? Because for the most part, on average, a motorcycle is relatively fuel efficient. Most bikes will average about 300 kms per tank of fuel which can range from seven to twenty bucks per fill up. Obviously, tank size and motorcycle size/ displacement all factor into this too. But, if you are buying a motorcycle for the sole reason to save on commuting, get a bus pass and call it a day. For the rest of those who ride or are in the consideration process, it’s about more than economy, it’s about the look, the ride, the feeling, the cool factor, the rumble and all the sensations that go along with it. All the companies who are re-mortgaging the assembly plant to develop and build an electric are not going to attract the guy I just described, especially when the price tag starts at $14,000 and goes up to $29,000 and for that the only benefit is that there are no emissions. To me that’s a hard sell, given the added fact that if you do ride any distances, don’t plan on taking your brand new electric, cause you only have a max. range of about 350 kms and the re-charging time can vary from 3 to 12 hours. Perhaps smaller urban-conscious electrics will someday make a big splash, especially in areas where you can ride them 11 months of the year. As for Canadian weather? To me it’s a lot of bucks for not much return. If the industry wants my two cents, focus on smaller displacement bikes, with affordable price tags and make sure dealerships are open and ready to serve when customers need them to be – but that is another rant for another issue. Hey, but I could be wrong.

chatterbox BMW’s New Electric Motorcycle Concept

BMW has a long history of building motorcycles, but it hasn’t done all that well in the electric motorcycle department. Clearly, though, this is something the company is thinking hard about and today, at its inaugural NextGen event, the company showed its newest electric concept bike, the BMW Motorrad Vision DC Roadster. As usual, there’s no guarantee that this concept will ever come to market. Indeed, it’s likely that it won’t, but it will provide the inspiration for what will eventually go into production. Going electric is a hard move to make for a company and that has been associated with its 2-cylinder boxer engine for ages. If it wants to produce a successful electric motorcycle, then it needs to be able to offer buyers not just performance (something they get by default with an electric engine and the torque it produces), but also something that retains the brand image buyers associate with BMW motorcycles. Edgar Heinrich, the Head of Design for BMW Motorrad, argues that the Vision DC Roadster does just that. “The boxer engine is the heart of BMW Motorrad – an absolute stalwart of its character,” he said. “But BMW Motorrad stands for visionary zero-emissions vehicle concepts, too. In view of this, one question that arises is: what would happen if we were to replace the boxer engine with an electric motor and the required battery? The Vision Bike shows how we’re able to retain the identity and iconic appearance of BMW Motorrad in distinctive form while at the same time presenting an exciting new type of

riding pleasure.” Where a typical BMW motorbike would usually have its engine, the Vision roadster has a battery pack with coolers. Throughout the concept, the company’s designers used familiar design elements from previous generations of the brand’s motorcycles. In addition to the motorcycle, BMW also today showed off a new concept vehicle, the BMW Vision M Next, a new electrified sports car. The idea here is to provide a counterpart to the existing iNEXT concept that focuses more on performance than ease of use. “Where the BMW Vision iNEXT illustrated how autonomous driving is set to transform life on board our vehicles, the BMW Vision M NEXT demonstrates how state-of-the-art technology can also make the experience of driving yourself purer and more emotionally engaging,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “In both models, the focus is firmly on the people inside. Design and technology make the ‘EASE’ and ‘BOOST’ experiences more natural and more intense.” In line with this idea, the new concept vehicle promises to be able to go from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in three seconds and offer a range of about 62 miles (which isn’t all that much). To get access to more power, drivers can also hit a BOOST+ button. With the M Next, BMW is also showing off some new user interface designs. The interface now adapts to the speed you are driving at, for example, it will automatically give you less information as you drive faster, in order to let you focus on the road head.

Triumph Rocket 3 TFC Boasts A Claimed 180 HP!

It’s huge, folks. And it has even more horsepower than originally thought. Final performance specs were being updated and that the Rocket 3 TFC was sold out for its limited-edition North American run. Big deal, right? Except the final numbers on the massive power and torque delivered by the new Rocket 3 TFC’s mondo 2,500cc Triumph triple (the largest production motorcycle engine in the world, Triumph reminds us) are even more incredible than the initial spec chart. Triumph has updated key specs for the limited-edition 2019 Rocket 3 TFC. It’s now rated at 180 hp and 163 poundfeet of torque, making it the most powerful production Triumph in history. Courtesy of Triumph Motorcycles Triumph is telling us that peak power is now confirmed at a whopping 180 hp at 7,000 rpm. That’s an increase of 12 hp over the originally stated 168 hp, which we already thought was out of this world. Manufacturers will often overstate performance specs as a marketing ploy, but even if these numbers are 5 to 10 hp off (as they tend to be), we’re still gobsmacked at the new digits. It makes the Rocket 3 TFC the most powerful production Triumph of all time. The formerly porky musclebike has lost some serious poundage, and gained

even more muscle. It’s now 14 percent lighter than the previous gen Rocket 3. A sexy aluminum single-sided swingarm helps improve things in the looks department, while helping to lighten the load. The rear cast aluminum wheel is still shod with 240mm rubber though. Other key specifications we dug out of the release also include the newly confirmed dry weight of the Rocket 3 TFC, which Triumph says weighs in at 639 pounds, or 98 pounds (14 percent) lighter than the previous generation. Lastly—and not surprisingly—Triumph tells us the customer response to this exclusive, ultra-premium motorcycle has been overwhelming, and the entire North American allocation (225 units) of the 750 limited edition global run have now been sold, so that’s it. All US and Canadian models are spoken for. With that kind of response though, we have to believe a proper mainline production model will be coming down the pike pretty soon. Stay tuned. The cockpit looks nothing like the Rocket of yore. You get a TFT instrument display with a full suite of riding modes, Shift Assist, and Hill Hold Control as well as cruise control and TPMS, as well these exhaust headers looked super cool and add to the whole look of this New Rocket.

By JOHN LEWIS (And maybe even your love life.) By John Lewis, June 2019 Ride! It’s good for your health. I’m certainly no rocket scientist, but it makes sense to me. When I ride I feel better. Hell, I feel great! The good news is that there is be both empirical and scientific evidence that proves this to be true. To get some insight about what people were thinking or how they were feeling when they rode from an empirical perspective I chimed in on a FB thread that asked: “What do you think about while you are riding?” I wrote, “I immerse myself 100% in the moment—my riding, the road, the scenery (like a mindfulness exercise, when my focus strays I bring it back)—and experience a blissful sense of peace. This focused attention displaces all of life’s worries and distractions and hours pass as if they are minutes.” One person responded, “Perfect comment… . I have been asked if I ride to escape reality. No, says I, I ride to find reality.” While I was riding across the prairies, when I’d see an oncoming train, I’d give an “air horn” (like “air guitar”) to the train’s engineer by reaching my right hand up into the air and pulling an imaginary horn. The train’s engineer tooted back—every single time. It made me smile. I felt connected to everything: my motorcycle, the road, the animals, the environment, and, yes, even the train and its engineer who welcomed the opportunity to greet a fellow lonely soul crossing the vast prairie landscape. When I’m riding I am both alone yet totally connected. Life seems like it is exactly as it should be. My thoughts aren’t unique. This is how some others (possibly reworded for readability) expressed the magical benefits of motorcycling… “I find when I am riding I end up slowing my mind down and clearing my mind of the rat race called life so I can enjoy things. It relieves my stress, and when I go camping with the bike.... well, that just makes for a better me.” “Everything I normally think about is suddenly not important. The only important thing is where I am here and now: the road and surroundings, and the sound and feel of the bike. If I want to live, I need to live in the moment. All of my other

worries get put back into proper perspective and set aside.” “Riding for miles and miles watching the road and listening to my machine. In the spring I love the smell of flowers. In the fall I love the smell of good cooking or a wood stove in the mountains. No ride is the same but almost every one brings a feeling of oneness with my machine and the environment and brings me an inner peace.” “The discipline of riding, looking at the line and setting up for what’s ahead yet keeping the view around me in balance. When it all comes together and I’m riding in the zone it’s an amazing sensation— everything else disappears.” This sounds a lot like “flow” as described by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in his book “Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience”—a book I read many years ago. Csikszentmihalyi talks about activities that create a flow experience. I think motorcycling is one such activity. He defines a flow experience as one in which you are challenging your skills while at the same time, “there is a feeling that your skills are up to the task at hand. …Concentration is so intense that there is no attention left over to think about anything irrelevant, or to worry about problems. Self-consciousness disappears, [you become immersed in the moment] and the sense of time becomes distorted.” (“Sorry honey, I only meant to only go out for an hour.”) His studies discovered that “every flow activity…provided a sense of discovery, a feeling of transporting the person into a new reality… [and] pushed the person to higher levels of performance leading to previously undreamed of states of consciousness.” If someone is new to motorcycling and doesn’t feel their skills are adequate to the challenge at hand they will not attain optimal experience or get this sense of flow. I don’t get it every time either. But on the good days, I’d even go so far as to say on most days, I feel at one with my machine, time dissolves and magic happens. The result is both self-discovery and growth. A sense of inner peace on the one hand combined with a hyper-awareness of what is going on around me. I am at one with what I am doing and my environment. I experience a flow experience just like Csikszentmihalyi describes. “Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. has been involved in joint research on the relationship between motorcycle riding and brain

9 – The Motorcycle Times, July 2019

stimulation with Ryuta Kawashima Laboratory of the Department of Functional Brain Imaging.” According to Yamaha’s website they studied the relationship between motorcycle riding and brain stimulation and found three important findings: 1. Riding a motorcycle stimulates the brain. [OK, I knew that.] 2. Motorcyclists who ride regularly demonstrate a higher level of brain use

and a higher level of brain stimulation. [I thought that, but now I know.] 3.Incorporating motorcycle riding into daily life improves various cognitive functions and has positive effects on mental functions and emotional health such as stress reduction. [OK, screw meditation and yoga, I’m going riding!] But it is not just abstract books and studies on psychology that tell the story, although they are great ammunition to

justify why you really should be going out for a ride. According to Edward Phillips, M.D., Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School, “recognizing how flow occurs… in your life and creating opportunities for more flow experiences can be a potent route to increased happiness.” And that’s good for your health, your relationships, your marriage. Heck, it’s good for everything. I know one way I can get more “flow”

in my life. Ride more. And I believe it too. Since I have come back to riding I have been happier, healthier, and more confident. I have attracted new friends and become more interesting to potential mates—one in particular but shhhhh, it’s early times yet. Go figure! I knew I was going to enjoy riding again, I just didn’t know it was going to do so much.

Motorcycle Insurance

It’s Time To Get Real, Enough is Enough!

By JASON ALEXANDER Ask any Canadian motorcycle rider about their insurance and we guarantee you will get an instantaneous negative reaction. In our opinion, as Canadians we pay way over the odds for motorcycle insurance. To make matters worse, the level of coverage is also dramatically inferior to that offered in other parts of the world, including the States, the UK and Europe. In this article, we want to highlight some of the key issues in order to increase awareness amongst the motorcycling community. According to data from Transport Canada for 2017, there were 191 motorcyclist fatalities. This figure was 0.026% of the total registered motorcyclists at that time. By comparison, there were 1,296 car driver fatalities, or 0.05% of total registered cars. These figures indicate that riding a motorcycle is almost two times safer than driving a car. Motorcyclists are healthier than most - There is overwhelming scientific evidence that proves Motorcycle riders are much healthier than nonriders - both mentally and physically. There are two key takeaways from this. The first is that, the risk of being involved in a fatal collision riding a motorcycle is less than driving a car. The second is that motorcycle riders are healthier than non-riders. Both of these points indicate riders are less of an insurance risk than car drivers. With all of the evidence available, why do insurance companies charge us so much to ride. Do they have an active anti-motorcycle policy - which, in itself, could easily constitute some form of discrimination? Maybe we should challenge the insurance companies, take them to task and force them to explain themselves. Let’s outline some of the restrictive practices that the insurance companies perform, and provide them with some real-world information to think about. The image of the ‘Outlaw Biker’ has stamped its mark on the public’s collective consciousness - including the insurance companies. However, times have changed. Even though these gangs still exist, they are only a small percentage of the motorcycling community. Let’s face it, every walk of life has its undesirable elements, but that is not representative of the majority. These days, the ste-

reotypical biker is more likely to be a middle-aged business person than a member of a notorious gang. Motorcycle riders are just ordinary people that happen to enjoy riding motorcycles. For many, it’s a hobby or a pastime - and a rather expensive one at that. Why do the insurance companies seem to unfairly label us and penalize us for this? Let’s be honest here. Canada is not a country that presents people with the opportunity to ride all year round. At certain times of the year the weather simply doesn’t allow for it. The vast majority of the Insurance companies make us pay for a full 12 months, but we can only ride for 4-6 months. Common sense says that this reduces the Insurance risk, so why are we paying for full coverage during the times when we are not riding? We simply don’t see

that of non-riders. Certainly there are exceptions to this and, just like car drivers there is a hooligan element. However this is an insignificant minority amongst the overall riding community. Furthermore, by riding motorcycles, riders make far better (and safer) car drivers. As a result of all this, we would argue that motorcycle riders are far less of an insurance risk than car drivers. Motorcycles are a greener alternative than cars or pickup trucks. Again, the insurance companies don’t appear to want to take this into consideration. In fact, quite the contrary. The insurance companies put up so many barriers, it is as though they are collectively discouraging us from riding - and pursue our beloved hobby. From a pure commercial perspective, how much business are the insurance companies loosing each

saying ‘NO’ is to set out conditions that nobody will ever agree to. This could be precisely what the insurance companies are trying to tell us. Sometimes it feels as though the Insurer will only provide coverage, if you turn up at their offices on a Friday after 4pm, and you must be accompanied by both sets of Great Grandparents. Then and only then will they provide insurance coverage. The best example, of unwelcome interference by the insurance companies, comes when you request a test ride from your motorcycle dealer. Invariably you will be told that you can’t have a test ride because the insurance premium (for the dealer) is cost prohibitive. This makes no sense at all. Are you really expected to buy a motorcycle without having a test ride first? A tiny percentage of dealers will pay the extortionate

this taken into consideration in our insurance policies. There is overwhelming research data that proves that people who ride motorcycles are healthier than non-riders. Insurance companies appear to be choosing to ignore this fact. For example, mental alertness, physical health and general state of mind of riders are all far superior to

year, because they make it so difficult to get the coverage we need for our bikes? The insurance companies will often impose ridiculous conditions on their policies. For example, they might restrict the allowable annual mileage, levy a higher premium based on where we live and so on and so forth. In business, the politest way of

insurances, as they know it helps sell bikes. Once again, this is an example of the insurance companies putting up unnecessary barriers for motorcyclists. Insurance companies like to assign categories for our motorcycles such as ‘Sports’, ‘Cruiser’ and ‘Sports Tourer’ etc. These categories are often inaccurate or make no sense - as

you would expect from a bunch of people who have never done anything vaguely exciting in their entire lives. However, these categories are used to justify higher premiums for certain bikes. For example, if you own a huge-engined Harley (1868cc) you will pay less than you do for a Ducati Multistrada 1260. What’s all that about? The Ducati’s engine is 608cc smaller, the bike is lighter, much easier to handle and contains a whole host of rider safety features - including ABS and traction control - all of which are absent from the Harley. In short, the Ducati is a much safer bike than the Harley in virtually every way. You would think that the insurance companies would know this - if they bothered to do their research. Doesn’t that just tell you that the Canadian Insurance companies are making this up as they go along? Insurance companies also like to categorize us - the motorcycle riders. They often won’t openly admit this, but the fact remains that this is a standard practice. This enables them to assess risk based upon the type of rider they think you are; the type of motorcycle they think you will ride; and so on. We requested insurance quotations from several companies in order to compare the premiums of two fictitious individuals. The first person is a 52 year old accountant, with 3 years riding experience, who is looking for insurance for a Harley Davidson Street Glide. The second is a 48 year old marketing executive who is an ex-motorcycle racer, with a 32-year riding record, looking for insurance for a BMW S1000RR sports bike. Unbelievably the accountant with the Harley was offered an annual insurance premium that was 46% less than the ex-racer. We ask you this … who is the better, safer rider with the most experience here? If that’s not ridiculous, nothing is. With all of the above in mind, we have to ask whether there are any areas in which the insurance companies may actually be justified in charging us extortionate premiums? Unfortunately, in two very specific areas, the answer to this may well be…YES! There are far too many motorcyclists in Canada who fail to wear appropriate protective clothing when riding. Sure they may wear a helmet (the current minimum legal requirement) but that’s it when it comes to personal safety. For some riders, shorts, teeshirts and flip-flops are viewed as the ideal motorcycle gear. Without protective gear, even a minor spill on a motorcycle can result in an injury - and an insurance claim. The Insurers know this, and this helps them to justify charging higher premiums for everyone. With the huge range of motorbike clothing that’s available, there’s something suitable for everyone, for all riding conditions and for all tastes. There are absolutely no excuses here. It’s simple! If we all wear good gear to protect ourselves, we will maximize riding times, reduce personal injury claims and we will all benefit from lower insurance premiums.

tems, Tires, Motorcycle Clothing and so on. Riding other people’s motorbikes - This is covered as a part of your UK/European policy. You are covered for test rides or if you borrow a friends’ bike. Now go and ask your Canadian Insurance Company if they can provide all of that, and whether they can do it all for less than $1,500 per year! It’s easy to believe that the Insurance Companies are killing motorcycling. This is, of course, a real problem for the motorcycle manufacturers as it directly impacts sales. Some of the manufacturers have started to address this and are trying to remove barriers for customers by offering insurance services themselves. For example, some of the major manufacturers - including Harley Davidson and BMW - have financial divisions that offer insurance services. In addi-

offered us an insulting 15% discount off the ‘normal’ insurance coverage for each additional bike. DNA+ protection system - DNA+ forensic protection is proven to deter thieves, and was included free with every motorbike policy. Unlimited Bike Accessory Coverage - European insurers will cover any manufacturer-approved accessory you put on your bike at no additional cost. For example, all those carbon fibre and titanium parts, and your panniers are fully covered. The only requirement is that you tell the insurance company what accessories you have. Unlimited mileage - You can cover as many miles as you like. Furthermore, European insurers will offer discounts if you wish to voluntarily limit your annual mileage. Supplier Discounts - Most European insurers provide discount vouchers with selected suppliers. This typically includes Alarm Sys-

tion, they will provide insurance for other motorcycle brands not just their own. Maybe this is the way that motorcycle insurance will go - where the manufacturers themselves are forced to eliminate the problem for their customers. At least if the manufacturers provide the insurance services you know that they want to encourage motorcycling. By providing insurance as a part of the purchase of the motorcycle just about everybody wins - lower premiums for riders and increased motorcycle sales for the manufacturers. In summary, Canadian insurance companies could learn a lot from their colleagues in Europe. An even better approach for the Canadian Insurers is to start working with us to understand our needs, reward well-trained riders, work with motorcycle training companies and generally incentivize us rather than penalize us.

By MARK WHITEHOUSE The Yamaha Niken is a bike that has managed to court controversy amongst motorcycling journalists and potential customers alike. Before we provide our first impressions review of this unusual motorcycle, let’s applaud the fact that Yamaha has a long history of innovation. The Niken is yet another example of this. The Niken represents a bold step by Yamaha demonstrating their willingness to explore the potential of motorcycles and dare to be different. Ugly Duckling or Beautiful Swan? The major element of this motorcycle, that seems to be at the centre of all the controversy, is the overall look of the bike. Yamaha has engineered a bike that has two 15-inch wheels at the front end and a conventional single wheel at the back. This gives the bike a completely different look from anything else that is out there. Cosmetically this is like no

other bike in the market today and you can be sure it will attract attention wherever you go. On it’s looks alone, you will either love it or hate it and this is perhaps Yamaha’s biggest challenge with the Niken. In fact, it is a bit like the BMW 7 series in that many considered that to be an extremely ugly vehicle. However, as with the BMW 7 series, once you are on the Niken the looks simply don’t matter - primary because you can’t see it - and you can start to really enjoy the bike for what it is. The Niken is an accomplished motorcycle and within the first five minutes of riding it you start to appreciate its outstanding handling and stability. The build quality of the Niken is first class and the level of standard equipment is very comprehensive. The seating position is just right, the controls are where you want them to be and the digital dash is up there with the very best. We instantly felt comfortable on the Niken and this inspired increasing levels of confidence the more miles we racked up. For such a physically large bike it was a delightful surprise that the Niken felt light and agile. On that point, if you are of a somewhat diminutive stature you

Yamaha Niken

may struggle with the seat height of the Niken. The rear view mirrors are located a little too far forward on the fairing, but they are effective nonetheless. The only criticism of this is that they are difficult to adjust whilst you are on the move. However, this is a first-world problem and not a show-stopper in any way. The bike we rode was the Niken GT which comes complete with side panniers, comfort seats, passenger grab rail, cruise control and a centre stand. The real surprise for us was just how capable a touring machine the Niken truly is. It is undeniably a comfortable long-distance sports tourer and this is where that unusual front end set up comes into its own. Those two wheels at the front soak up any bumps better than any bike we have ever ridden, making the Niken a very smooth ride indeed. Another surprise from the Niken was the exceptional handling. This is a bike that allows for incredible lean angles coupled with class-leading stability in the corners. Once you experience this you will instantly get what Yamaha is trying to achieve with the Niken. At that point the looks just don’t matter any-

more as you sit back and enjoy the ride. The engine in the Niken is the 847cc three cylinder, derived from the award winning Yamaha MT09. It produces 64.3ft-ib of torque and 114bhp, so there is no shortage of power. The only criticism we had whilst aggressively riding the Niken was that, on corner exit, the back end can become a little squirmy. However, this actually adds to the character of the bike rather than cause any issues. The gearbox too is a peach and the quick shifter works really well enabling you to get all that power down effortlessly and controllably. Congratulations Yamaha for building a truly outstanding, futuristic and unconventional motorcycle. For some people, the looks will be too challenging to live with. For others they will find it difficult to part with the C$21k asking price. However, this is a heck of a lot of bike for the money and a genuine pleasure to ride. We would encourage anyone who is in the market for an eye-catching, attention-seeking motorcycle to give the Niken a go. It is a refreshing break from the norm and guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you ride.

New Electric Motorcycle with 360º Radar & Rear Camera continued from cover

That’s another advantage of electric motorcycles: warnings can be indicated by vibrations. Such subtle notes could easily be drowned out on gas-bikes by the inherent vibrations from the engine. In fact, the Arc Vector electric motorcycle also uses haptics built into a motorcycle-connected jacket that give the rider subtle shoulder taps indicating the location of cars approaching from behind. That’s a $114,000 electric motorcycle though. Hopefully Da-

Damon Electric Motorcycle, As explained by the company: “Our Halo bike is intended to be a technology demonstration platform. Electric is the best platform for demonstrating the future of motorcycling and the Halo bike, as a proof of concept bike, allows us to bring many more innovations to market that we are working on. For example, adjustable ergonomics.” Speaking of those adjustable ergonomics, Damon’s bikes are designed to morph to fit the rider and the ride. Three different points of adjustments allow the rider to electrically move the handlebars, foot pegs and seat. Theoretically, the rider could set the bike in a sportier geometry for the twisties and then reset it for more comfortable cruising. The exact method for making these adjustments isn’t clear yet, but the bike will come with both an iPhone and Android app, potentially providing a clue regarding customization options. The bike will also have connectivity options including 5G, Bluetooth and WiFi.

Harley-Davidson has a New Partner By TERRANCE MILLER

So, Just Who Is Quianjiang Motorcycle? And Where have I seen that new Harley design before? When the news broke a few days ago that Harley-Davidson is partnering with Quianjiang Motorcycle Company Limited to produce a 338cc baby Harley for the Chinese market. For Harley, China is a major growth market. Sales in the country increased 27% in 2018 compared to the previous year, according to the American motorcycle maker. But Harley-Davidson wants half of its sales to come from international markets by 2027. This strategy aims to offset declining North American sales as its customer base gets older. The company has been increasing production in places like Thailand to make that happen. But tariffs have also played a role in its plans to make more bikes in

playing field, or better.” It’s not clear if the Harley motorcycle that will be made in China would have been subject to Chinese tariffs had it been manufactured in the United States. A spokesperson did not offer a comment. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are due to meet on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Japan later this month as they seek to avoid further escalating their damaging trade war. So, who is Quianjiang Motorcycle, the new partner of Harley Davidson? If you’re familiar with the saga of Benelli Motorcycles in the US, you’re already at least a little acquainted with QJ. The company, based in Zhejiang, China, purchased Benelli in 2005—one of the oldest Italian motorcycle manufacturers, period. The marque came complete with a long and varied history that includes the

Asia. The company said last year it was moving some manufacturing to Thailand due to European Union tariffs on motorcycles shipped from the United States. The European Union raised its 6% tariff to 31% last June in response to the Trump administration’s tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. “It’s unfortunate, but we’re pushing forward with our strategy to make sure that we preserve the integrity and the growth potential within the European market,” CEO Matthew Levatich said on the company’s most recent earnings call. The Thailand plant also makes motorcycles for sale in Asia. It will begin shipping motorcycles to China by the end of the year. Harley’s shift overseas has angered President Donald Trump, who last year encouraged consumers to boycott the company as a result. “Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors,” he tweeted at the time. “A really bad move! U.S. will soon have a level

short-lived MotoBi, as well as a spinoff firearms company (also called Benelli) that you may recognize. Quianjiang has made motorcycles and scooters under several brands for some time — both for its home market as well as abroad. Purchasing Benelli made a lot of sense for the company’s global goals for two reasons: beautiful Italian designs, and also name recognition. Of course, it’s a lot easier for bike buyers to do ample amounts of research (and fall down several thousand miles of rabbit holes) now than it was in years past. Benellis might be easy on the eyes — but even before Quianjiang bought them, they weren’t precisely known as paragons of reliability. The company’s motto is “European design, Japanese quality with Chinese cost.” Sharp-eyed moto enthusiasts have already spotted that this new baby Harley design bears a striking resemblance to the Benelli TNT 300. Could the new Chinese-market Harley simply be a rebadged, slightly reconfigured version of that design? It’s certainly not

and KSR motorcycles and scooters. The company also makes ATVs, minibikes, and assorted other products and likes to brag that the only continent its products are not sold on today is Antarctica. It’s also a subsidiary of China’s largest

North American market. Still, they’re fairly small when you consider that a decade ago, China was moving over 17 million bikes within its home market alone. Globally, Motorcycles Data reported that third through ninth place in motorcycle sales are held by (in order): Indonesia (6.38 million sales), Vietnam (3.39 million sales), Pakistan (1.9 million sales), Thailand (1.78 million sales), the Philippines (1.59 million sales), Brazil (957,000 sales), and Taiwan (762,000 sales). In the end, whether or not Harley eventually wants to bring its 338cc future new model to the North American market isn’t super important if it can successfully move it within the country’s borders—and perhaps eventually to other Asian markets, which traditionally favor smaller-displacement bikes anyway. While Harley may be seen as the most significant American manufacturer, sometimes we need to realize that it isn’t always all about us.

impossible, but we’ll have to wait and see for sure. Benelli isn’t Quianjiang’s only brand— just perhaps its best-known outside China. Other brands the company manufactures include Qijiang, Generic, Keeway,

automotive company, Geely — which currently also owns Volvo, Polestar, and half of Daimler’s Smart brand, according to Car and Driver. In Malaysia, Quianjiang’s parent company also controls that market’s major automotive player Proton, as well as Lotus (yes, that storied and most English of brands). The company is also evolving an EV brand called Lynk & Co based on a Volvo platform that is tentatively planned for a US launch in San Francisco as soon as 2021. Quianjiang might not be huge by itself— but its parent company is a massive and quiet behind-the-scenes global player. While it isn’t as big as India’s market in the global scheme of things, China is still the second largest two-wheeler market in the world. India’s total bike production in FY2017 exceeded 20 million units—but China wasn’t far behind, producing somewhere north of 15 million units for the same time period according to Marklines. Those are big numbers, especially when you consider them against increasingly dire sales numbers for the

Honda’s New Super Cub

By KIM MATTHEWS One of the Best-Selling Bikes Ever The 125 cc model returns to the streets after almost 40 Years. The original, 49cc, three-speed Honda Super Cub, is the machine that created the Honda Motor Company. Since its debut on the world stage back in 1958, Honda has sold over one million Super Cubs across the globe. Honda’s greatest advertising slogan of last century, “You meet the nicest people on a Honda”, centered on the Super Cub. It helped to bring in levels of money that could be measured by the cubic ton, and pushed Honda into the realms of global automotive titan, rather than just another automotive manufacturer. Honda stopped bringing the Super Cub into the country in the early 1980s, although the Honda Motor Company in Japan continued to develop the step-thru motorcycle and sell it around the world with stunning success, particularly in Southeast Asia, where it reached a cult status across a seemingly

ageless demographic. The good news is that not only has Honda created a new Super Cub, now with a 125 cc power plant based off their Monkey Bike, it’s also only in the U.S. American Honda has, thanks to the explosion of small-bike culture they helped start with the enormously successful 125 cc Grom, seen fit to once again grace city roads and streets with the Super Cub. Retailing at about $3,600 US, the new, four-speed, ABS-equipped 2019

Honda C125A Super Cub is a charming little machine. The step-thru design, originally conceived to ensure female riders would welcome it back in the late 1950s, makes riding a joy. It’s a fusion between motorcycle and scooter, and a perfect beach or inner-city errand companion, as its top speed of around 60 mph will ensure you stay off the highways. There are some modern touches to the new Super Cub, such as a gear position

indicator and keyless ignition, but the original design that made the machine so popular still seeps through. The Super Cub runs a semi-automatic gearbox with a heel-toe clutch system, so even though you are still changing gears yourself, there’s no clutch lever and you can roll to the lights in any gear you like and not stall. It’s an idiot-proof design, one that’s stood the test of time for over half a century. Indeed, the Super Cub as a whole has done just that. The Cub’s simplistic design, delightful personality and sheer ruggedness has, for many, allowed the dream of personal mobility to become a reality. That would work out to about $4,600 CAD if the machine came to Canada— but it isn’t. At least, not for 2019. That’s the official line from Big Red’s Canadian arm, and that’s it; there was no talk about the bikes coming here at some future date, or not coming here. We’ll just have to wait and see, but if you really want one, we’d suggest you start pestering your local dealer. The OEMs are certainly capable of changing their mind, if they think they can whip up enough sales to make importation worthwhile.

The Lady and the Indian! By MARK WHITEHOUSE I’d been for a short ride and decided to grab a coffee at Tim Hortons. As I pulled up, I noticed three bikes in the car park - two Indians and a Honda. As I collected my coffee I saw three people, all dressed in motorcycle gear, so I walked over to join them for a chat. There were two ladies and a gentleman, and the conversation quickly turned to motorcycles. One of the ladies, Joanne Kestle, was rather petite and was proudly wearing her Indian-branded motorbike jacket. As we wandered over to where our bikes were parked, I asked her what she was riding. Joanne pointed to a rather eye-catching Indian - which

she had purchased quite recently. I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting that. For a lady of a somewhat diminutive stature, I certainly didn’t imagine she would be riding such a big, heavy-weight Indian. As we approached the motorbike, Joanne told me that this was an Indian Springfield Dark Horse. It was finished in ‘white smoke’ livery that contrasted very well with the all-black engine. The absence of chrome, in favour of black finishes, made the bike look very special indeed. Apart from changing the seat, the Indian was pretty much stock - but that’s not all that is interesting about this story. Joanne, herself, is an HR business professional, an entrepreneur and a single mom with two daughters. Joanne explained that she got the motorbike bug after she saw an older lady riding a motorbike in Oakville. So she decided, there and

then, to get one for herself. Joanne has been riding for three years now, and she started her motorbiking journey on an Indian Scout 60. After successfully getting her ‘M’ license, she traded in the Scout for the Dark Horse. After chatting for a while, we all decided to go for a ride together. As we rode out towards Caledonia, I couldn’t help but notice just how confident a rider Joanne actually was. She certainly looked like she had been riding for far longer than three years. Doubtless, Joanne had invested in plenty of good motorcycle training. If it’s not impressive enough that this petite lady rides a motorbike, it’s simply amazing that she can so effortlessly handle such a heavyweight cruiser as the Indian. Having ridden a few of these big Indians for myself, they can often feel bulky and cumbersome - the long wheelbase doesn’t help in this

regard - especially at low speeds. However, the big Indians can also be enormously rewarding to ride, and the smile on Joanne’s face just reinforced that. She was loving every moment of this. Joanne’s enthusiasm for life is nothing short of inspirational, and riding is a key aspect of that. Whilst many of us only manage to put together our bucket lists, Joanne is actually working through hers. For example, when she was in her thirties she decided she would learn to fly. So off she went to Hamilton Flying Club and enrolled on a pilot training course. Two years later, whilst managing to fit flying lessons into her busy life as a business woman and mother, she qualified and got her pilots license. You can’t help but think that Joanne will wake up one morning and wonder what challenge she will set her mind to next. Whatever it is, you can be sure that Joanne will make a success of it. Every time I meet new people, it never fails to amaze me just how great the world of motorcycling can be. Everybody has their own story and I have heard some remarkable ones in my time. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, motorcycling manages to break down barriers whilst being totally inclusive and non-judgemental. It comprises people from all walks of life and every possible background - all united through a common passion for motorbikes. I asked Joanne what she enjoys so much about riding and she explained that it makes her feel totally free. In a world so full of complications and challenges, motorcycling is perhaps the greatest escape there is from the pressures of everyday life. You can let the problems float away as you focus on the ride and, afterwards, return with a fresh perspective. Regardless of who you are, we all need some of that from time to time. I admire Joanne for what she has achieved. On the face of it she may appear to be an unlikely motorbike rider. In fact, Joanne is about as far away from the stereotypical image of a motorcyclist as it’s possible to be. And that’s just fantastic, as it just shows you how wrong you can be. Her determination, ambition and sense of adventure brought her to motorcycling. She is a true inspiration for any rider, or anyone who wants to consider taking up motorcycling. Meeting Joanne was a real privilege. Thank you Joanne for sharing your story with us.
