Man arrested, woman still sought after child hit by motorcycle in Toronto

Toronto police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run that left a four-year-old boy in life-threatening condition. The child was struck by a motorcycle after he entered the roadway around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say the driver and a passenger fled the scene. The boy was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officers arrested a 31-year-old man shortly before 2 p.m. Monday and seized a 2016 Harley Davidson Road Glide Motorcycle. He has been charged with leaving an accident scene causing bodily harm, driving with an improper license and operating a vehicle without insurance. Police say they are not releasing the man’s name to “protect the integrity of the investigation.” Investigators are still searching for the female passenger. “Traffic Services Investigators have received tips and security video but are still appealing for security or dash camera video and any other information on this investigation to contact police,” said Toronto police in a news release. Anyone with information is asked to call 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers.

Moto Guzzi V7 III Racer Limited Edition Moto Guzzi is paying homage to one of its most iconic models – the V7 – by releasing a new model for 2020. Meet the Moto Guzzi V7 III Racer Limited Edition, which honors “Italy’s first superbike,” the 1967 V7. Moto Guzzi says: “The new Moto Guzzi V7 III Racer is not only the most sports-oriented of the range but also the one with the most prestigious. This limited-edition model further demonstrates Moto Guzzi’s ability to continuously create true customs directly from the factory.”

The V7 III Racer LE arrives with gloss-coated white graphics with red accents, along with the “Rosso Corso” colored frame and swingarm. This is reminiscent of the 1971 V7 Sport series, nicknamed “telaio rosso,” which translates to “red frame.” Another styling touch is the leather strap that runs across the top of the gas tank and matches the seat’s brown color. Besides the custom paint, the other premium features are the twin Öhlins piggyback reservoir

shocks that feature adjustability for spring preload, plus rebound and compression damping. Like the other V7 III Racers, the motorcycle arrives with passenger foot pegs and a passenger seat cover, but both are easily removed for a one-rider look. Excuses, Excuses….

a reason or explanation put forward to defend or justify a fault Whatever you do in life, there are usually risks associated with that endeavor. For example, if you like to stay fit and are an advocate of the positive effects of running and a healthy body, then as a runner you know that proper footwear is essential to ensuring you do not injure your feet. Not many marathon runners wear fling-flongs, flip-flops or whatever you want to call them during their races because they don’t offer proper support or protection, it makes perfect sense when you think about it right? What about those who want to skydive? Anyone who is planning to jump out of an airplane or off a skyscraper would ensure they have the proper safety gear and not just jump out the door without checking if their parachute was packed correctly or not, before hand. So, why do so many motorcyclists offer excuses after something happens? Poor decisions, poor planning, a lack of knowledge and or skills? I was reading a posting on facebook, yeah, I know, it’s facebook, there was a photo of a young guy, in his early to mid-twenties, with some serious road rash on his shoulder, down his side and on his hip. Ouch! Along with the photo was someone (I assume the person posting) tearing a strip off people who cut their grass and then blow it onto the road. The posting stated that the effects of grass clippings to a motorcycle are similar to a wet road or icy conditions, that affect the handling of a motorcycle. It went on to point a finger and state that it was that reason why this young guy ended up losing control of his bike and having to endure the pain of road rash.

Although I don’t have initmate knowledge of road rash, I have seen it first hand. Some time ago, my son, a new rider at the time, disregarded my best efforts to get him to take the safety course and wear proper safety gear. He had lady luck on his side for a little while, but luck ran out one sunny afternoon. While out on a ride he lost control and ended up asphalt surfing while wearing nothing more than a t-shirt and jeans. Needless to say, he experienced what most of us hope we never have to. He had road rash from his face to his knees. At the hospital, the emergency nursing staff had to clean out the wounds as best they could. They did give him meds for pain, but according to him, nothing made a difference. He healed up in about six months, but he still has some road pebbles embedded into his shoulder and hip as a subtle reminder of his experience. He has since taken my advice and took a safety course and understands the importance of gear. He wears proper gear anytime he heads out for a ride regardless of conditions or temperature. Grass clippings, gravel, leaves in the fall, drizzle on painted lines, rail tracks; these are hazards that we all face each riding season. Any good rider knows that keeping your eyes forward and looking down the road and anticipating the unknown is what will help keep you safe. The biggest reason why this guy has road rash is because he didn’t have the ‘proper gear’, end of story. If he had been wearing the proper gear, he may still have gone down, but there wouldn’t have been a posting about road rash because there wouldn’t have been any, he may

have scuffed up his gear, but I promise, his bike would have fared much worse than he. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times we advocate the importance of ‘proper gear’, the message just gets lost. For the most part, it’s ususally only in that latter part of our Canadian riding season when riders put on jackets, gloves and riding boots etc. At the start of each riding season we publish a story on abrasion, it looks at different materials we use or wear for riding protection and examines the results of abrasion from sliding on asphalt. The results are shocking, it’s a tool we use to hopefully make riders understand that what they think is protection, isnt protection at all. So, if we all understand the risks with motorcycling why do so many riders disregard safety? It’s called the ‘Cool’ factor, the bad boy persona that goes along with riding a motorcycle. It’s nothing new, Marlon Brando popularized that bad boy image back in the 50’s in the motion picture ‘The Wild Ones’. Being cool to many riders is more important than being safe, don’t ask me why, it just is. The problem with the ‘cool factor’ is poor decisions are made in its honour. Ultimately, it’s your choice but if you choose wrong and find yourself in an unfortunate situation surfing down the highway at 80 kph and all you have on is a t-shirt, own that decision, as it was yours to make. Oh, and by the way, if you take passengers, make sure they are wearing proper gear, after all, they are trusting you with their skin, so to speak. Have a great riding season. ‘Better to sweat than bleed’

chatterbox Triumph and Williams form alliance to build electric motorcycles Motorcycles Triumph is preparing to get into the electric vehicle business, and has formed a government-sponsored alliance with Williams Advanced Engineering, Integral Powertrain Limited and WMG from the University of Warwick to get things moving Team Britain has begun assembling its forces to join the battle for electric motorcycling supremacy. Now, in a government-supported push to develop electric motorcycle capabilities, Triumph and Williams Advanced Engineering have entered an alliance with Integral Powertrain and WMG. “Project Triumph TE-1” will be a two-year effort, partially funded by the UK government in the hopes that this alliance can place the UK in a position to compete in an emerging electric motorcycle market. Here’s how each group’s contributions will break down: Triumph will lead the effort, providing all the “cycle” parts of the motorcycle prototypes as well as specifying what is needed from the electric powertrain. It’ll also get involved in the design and integration of regenerative braking and advanced safety systems. Williams Advanced Engineering will design, develop, produce and integrate a lightweight battery pack, battery management unit and vehicle control unit. Integral Powertrain’s e-Drive division is in charge of the motor, a custom-built unit with high power density and a silicon carbide inverter integrated into the motor housing. WMG, at the University of Warwick, will be concentrating on commercialization issues, modeling and simulating future market needs. And Innovate UK, a government agency founded to promote science and technology, will provide government support and administer fund-

ing. If this partnership can get more electric motorcycles onto the road, it’ll be a win for various government agencies tasked with reducing road congestion and vehicle emissions. The overall goal here is to develop each partner’s capabilities in a motorcycle-specific context, while putting Triumph in a position to get something electric onto the market within a few years. “We see a Triumph electric powertrain as a significant requirement alongside our signature twin and triple cylinder engines,” says Triumph Chief Product Officer Steve Sargent. “As part of our electric motorcycle initiative, Project Triumph TE-1 represents an exciting collaboration that will provide valuable input into our future line-up.” So, we won’t be seeing anything we can sling our leg over for some time yet, but in the meantime it’s interesting to speculate what an electric Triumph might look like. It’ll be hard to give it the kind of retro heritage look that drives much of the company’s catalog, given the motor-centric design that tends to entail. The easiest fit might be to hide a generally fairly boxy and unattractive electric powertrain underneath a fairing. But the greatest win for the industry in general might come if this alliance can find a way to make an electric motor and battery pack actually look actively awesome. Motorcycle people in general love a beautiful motor, with some visible mechanics to it. There might not be much in the way of moving parts to enjoy with electric motors, but we suspect once they start looking cool, they’ll start capturing the imagination of the enthusiast market. We’ll see where this alliance leads in time.

Province open to raising speed limits in Ontario

The transportation minster says the province may be interested in raising speed limits on Ontario highways. Jeff Yurek announced the government will run several pilot projects using different maximum speeds. The minister kind of teased the idea of higher speed limits at an event in Toronto, he said he will announce more details next week, but singled out the 400-series highways, saying they were designed for vehicles to drive at faster speeds. The idea of a higher limit resonates with many drivers who say everybody is already driving at 120, but for others it’s a safety concern saying that if the limit was raised people would use it as an excuse to drive even faster. Always concerned about driver safety, OPP Officer Kerry Schmidt says speed is one of the top factors in collisions, and the faster you go the more time you need to react behind the wheel. Ontarians used to be allowed to drive faster on the highway, just over 110 kph, but in 1974 it was dropped to below 100, an effort to save gas during an international fuel shortage. NDP leader Andrea Horwath says she wants to hear more from experts

Buell’s Electric Motorcycle ‘Flow’ Is Available For Pre-Order

Are you getting tired of all the new electric motorcycles being introduced lately? We sure aren’t. Especially when one pops up that is slick, powerful, and, for an electric motorcycle, quite a lovely design. On top of that, it’s an Erik Buell creation, and everyone who still has a soft spot for Buell motorcycles might be able to muster a little excitement about that. Buell’s ill-fated partnership with Harley-Davidson created a slew of motorcycles which were pretty fantastic in spite of the engines he was forced to stuff into them, and they were innovative and ahead of their time, at that. A few years later an independent Erik Buell Racing rose from the ashes of Buell Motorcycles but that venture, too, was unceremoniously snuffed. This time there might be a chance, with the same reach for innovation and unique design applied to an electric motorcycle platform, and the numbers are really impressive. The “Electric Mobility Company” dubbed “Fuell” (I know, I’m rolling my eyes too) has released an electric motorcycle (the “Flow”) and it is currently available for pre-order on the company’s website. The more powerful

version of the motorcycle is rated at 35kW (roughly 47hp) with a sustained max speed of

55mph (but with the ability to hit an 85 max speed burst). Its rated range in city driving is

The province says there will be increased signage and messaging and is proposing amendments that keep the street-racing penalties at 150 kilometres an hour. This means in the speed limit pilot zones, the street-racing penalties will apply at 40 km/h over the posted speed limit, not the usual 50 km/h over.

150 miles. The real news, though, is that the bike has a zero-60 time of 2.6 (yes, two point six) seconds and the motor puts out 553 ft/lb of torque. Yeah, you read those right. The electric motor is fully housed inside the hub of the rear wheel leaving the entire body of the bike available to carry the batteries and charging system. That entire configuration has me very curious about the weight distribution of the bike, the way it handles bumpy corners with all that unsprung weight, and how topheavy it feels at low speeds. The battery has a 10KwH capacity and a rated charge time, with the upgraded 6.6kW capacity charger, of an hour and a half (or, without, up to 10 hours). With a 400-lb curb weight and a 30-inch seat height, it isn’t out of the reach of a shorter or smaller rider, and with a somewhat reasonable price tag around $12,000 USD, it won’t price a lot of riders out of the market either. Here’s hoping this one makes it through to production and stays there at least long enough to let me score a test ride. The bikes are scheduled to begin delivery toward the end of the 2020 calendar year.

The Top 8 Adventure Bikes in 2019 Not all Adventure Motorcycles are created equal, and some can hit rough terrains better than others. There are others that can take sharper turns and provide speed unlike anything else. What an adventure bike does is it combines both these factors into one single vehicle thereby making it the best-suited motorbike for any rider who wants to take their bike for a long ride through the country. While these bikes can be hefty, we are not talking about the size of a professional sports bike. So, there are side guards, but not large enough that longer riding will tire you down. And at the same time, you get slimmer, stronger wheels, which can grip onto any terrain. Adventure motorcycles have become the new favourite of riders. The speed they provide is quite good for daily commuting, and these can handle both rough and city terrains. Owing to the nature of its dual capability, it has also been given the title of a dual sports motorcycle. Adventure bikes also come with a lot of upgrades. Hard cases, engine guards, Smart Turn Systems and Smart Brake Module are among the preferred ones. So let’s ride right into the top 8. We’ll let you know what makes them great adventure bikes. “Budget” Adventure Motorcycle – the Suzuki V-Strom The V-Strom 650 XT is one of the best dual sports motorcycles to buy. If you are on a budget but still require an allround vehicle, this just might be your top choice. You get a strong enough engine which produces 8,800 rpm and gives a

terrain ride. We tried these out for ourselves, and the bike matches its description without flaw. Suzuki does present this one as more of touring motorbike than an off-road vehicle, and it exactly matches the description. However, one of the primary reasons the V-Strom has been doing so well is that it is one of the cheapest option one can find in the adventure motorcycle category. And a good one at that too. Neither does it compromise on the power, nor the manoeuvrability. You are thereby making it an excellent choice for a beginner to the game. High-end Adventure Bike – the Kawasaki Versys While the Kawasaki Versys does belong to the higher end of adventure motorcycles, we think it’s the one with the most functionality for its price. The engine itself is one of the best from the sports bike part of the world. You never need to worry about the power that the Kawasaki Versys can release. The digital fuel injection system can ensure that this is done with absolute accuracy. People usually complain about the height of adventure bikes. However, the Versys 650 provides impeccable handling at both low and high speeds while maintaining the top seating posture to ensure that there is a proper view of the road ahead. The braking system may take a while to get used to due to the suspension. But once you do, there is no dive. And if you want to hit some perennial off roads through the woods, the Kawasaki will perform the task without even the slightest hassle. At the same time, we suggest that you get a tire upgrade before doing so. Needless to say, that Kawasaki is a brand which has been long trusted since its inception. The Versys model has been running for quite a while, and the latest

steady performance. The Suzuki 6 channel gearbox has always been one of the best among adventure motorcycles. The V-Strom comes equipped with the latest version of it. Handling side of things is also pretty neat when it comes to riding within the city and sudden turns. If you encounter a sudden off-road segment, the V-Strom 650 can handle it with ease. But this is not the machine that one should push towards a constant rough

addition to it is easily one of the best adventure motorcycles. Although it seems to cost more than the usual dual sports motorcycle, it does come with significant goods for its price. There hasn’t yet been any solid complaint regarding this vehicle for both in the city and off-terrain riding. This seems to be one of the best adventure bikes. By MIKE DOBSON I have heard many strange questions regarding tires but in the past two years, there has been one that boggled my mind. Lets just call him ‘Joe Schmoo’ ‘I am looking for car tires that will fit my motorcycle’, Why! Let me explain, I own a tire shop here in Hamilton, Ontario, I’m not promoting my shop, but I am promoting safety cause this can be very serious. I contacted Mike Manning, Dunlop Motorcycle Product & Marketing Manager, to get the real story. Mike explains, “There are several considerations when looking at tire design and use for a single-track ‘camber’ vehicle such as a motorcycle vs. a 2-track vehicle like a car or truck. Tire profile, construction and compounds are developed specifically for each type of vehicle.” Why? “Because a motorcycle is a single-track vehicle and leans as it turns, motorcycle tires are quite different than car tires. Whereas car tires have a fairly flat profile and a contact patch that varies little in size or shape, motorcycle tires have a U-shaped profile and a contact patch that changes size and shape during cornering”. That means, the shape of a motorcycle tire is designed to maintain a consistent contact patch throughout lean. A car tire would be flat and fat when upright and thin and narrow when turning a corner. Mike added, “car tires are not made to absorb the reduced contact patch at high camber angles that motorcycle tires frequently experience. Because of this, durability can be affected by operating at such high camber angles, which can lead to tire failure”. The profile of a motorcycle tire clearly has one large-diameter ring in the middle that tapers to smaller rings at each side (creating the U-

shape). As the bike leans, this makes rounding curves much easier than if the tires were square like those of a car. Here’s a quick demonstration. Grab an empty soup can from the recycling bin and a tapered coffee cup (that empty timmies cup will do nicely). Lay each on its side and roll them across the table. The can, shaped like a car tire, will track straight. But the tapered coffee cup, because it has larger and smaller diameters much like one side of a motorcycle tire, will want to turn. As you lean your bike from the large ring in the center toward the smaller ring on either edge, you are also in effect reducing the gearing of your bike, thereby slowing it in a curve. That makes it easier to add throttle through the bend as prescribed by most riding proficiency experts, which in turn stabilizes the bike’s chassis for smooth cornering. The square car tire does not provide that advantage when leaned. Beyond tire profile, sidewall stiffness plays an important role in motorcycle tires. The sidewall acts as a suspension component and must also provide enough rigidity to not only stand up to the unique forces placed upon it during cornering, but to also take advantage of those forces for precise handling. According to Mike, “When the bike is vertical, the bike’s suspension system does much of the work in keeping the tire in contact with the ground and controlling the ride. When the bike is leaned, there is less mechanical suspension and more tire suspension characteristics at play. The bike tires are designed and constructed specifically for this use.” Most modern motorcycle tires use multiple rubber compounds; harder compounds in the center to maximize tread life for highway riding and softer compounds toward the edges to maximize grip when the bike is leaned. Car tires have just one compound since they are not designed to be leaned over or to contend with camber forces. While use of a car tire might have no severe consequences during

normal riding, it could be problematic when performance really counts, such as when a threat unexpectedly appears directly in the path of the rider. The bike fitted with a car tire cannot be relied upon to respond as well as one with a motorcycle-specific tire when maximum traction and precise handling are needed. Is it ever acceptable to give up even a small degree of performance advantage when that small compromise could be enough to make an avoidable crash an unavoidable one? A motorcycle instructor friend of mine, told me that a student once ask her if he really needed to wear protective gear. “No,” Samantha replied. “Just wear it on the day you crash.” I suppose the same could be said for tires. Just use the motorcycle tires on the days when you need to avoid a crash. The bottom line? The manufacturers, engineers and safety experts I spoke with all said the same thing; riders need to realize that this is not a good idea. Never mount a passenger car tire on a motorcycle rim; the flat profile of a car tire is incompatible with the dynamics of a vehicle that leans as it corners, and the section of the tire in contact with the rim (the ‘bead’) is incompatible with motorcycle rims. A motorcycle calls for a tire that was developed to be a specialist in single-track vehicle dynamics. As motorcyclists, we have a need for a specialist: the one that was developed specifically for the demands of motorcycling. Manufacturers have developed tires for racing, street riding, touring, off-road as well as unique models and sizes for vintage and custom bikes. The superior performance and handling of today’s motorcycles owe as much to the advancement of tire technology and carcass construction as they do to suspension and chassis development. Selecting the correct size, model and make of tire will enable you to get the most out of your bike, and maximize your riding enjoyment

Specialty Tires On the cutting edge of tire technology are sport tires. Born out of competition at the world level, many modern sport tires are utilizing multiple compounds of rubber placed strategically around the tire to enhance wear and performance properties. Softer rubber along the edges for cornering are complimented by harder, more durable rubber down the centre for better mileage and wear. DOT treaded race tires and slicks are designed with a limited life, but with extraordinary grip, by utilizing specialized soft rubber compounds and lightweight carcass construction. In the custom world, tires in excess of 200–240mm wide have become fashionable. I haven’t ridden one yet but I imagine the cornering to be very different from that of a smaller width tire. Off-road tires are available in a myriad of compounds and tread patterns for everything from sand and dirt, to flat track and trail riding. Street legal dual sport tires feature large tread blocks, but constructed for higher speeds than knobbies for dirt-only motorcycles. Dual sport tires are a hybrid of the ‘knobby’ motocross tires and street tires. Numbers Explained You may have noticed that tires typically have an alphanumeric code moulded into the sidewall of the tire. This combination of numbers and letters provide information about sizing, construction and wear properties of the tire. A typical motorcycle tire uses the ISO Metric sizing system to classify tire specifications. The first set of numbers identifies the width and height of the tire. For instance a 180/55 ZR 17 denotes a tire that is 180mm across at its widest point, and has a sidewall height that is 55% of its width. The subsequent letters indicate the speed rating and carcass construction. In this case a ZR 17 describes a “Z” rated radial tire designed to be fit to a 17” diameter rim. An “S” rating means that the tire is

safe for operation at sustained speeds of (112 mph/180 km/h), H (130mph,/210km/h), V (in excess of 130 mph/210 km/h) and Z (in excess of 149 mph/240 km/h). Tire Tips There are two things you should never cut corners with, safety gear is one and tires is the other. Having a good set of tires is inexpensive insurance against having to fix your bike, or yourself, after a crash. Paramount to the effectiveness of any given tire is proper inflation. On all modern bikes, tire pressures are noted on a sticker that is glued and stuck somewhere on the motorcycle. Inflate tires to the recommended pressures when the tire is cold, before a ride, and check your tires regularly. Improperly inflated tires may wear faster, unevenly and negatively affect handling and grip. Make sure they are properly mounted and balanced with a good valve stem as well. If they are older tires, check for cracking (on the sidewalls and between the treads) or leaks. Always replace the tire when the tread reaches its minimum thickness or the wear bars appear near the bottom of the tread. Crashing your expensive bike for the sake of a few hundred kilometres on a balding tire is not good economics. Always try to install a matching brand, or at least a comparable model tire. Never mix bias and radials, and pay attention to the sizing as well. Having an improperly sized tire on your bike can create handling issues and dangerous interference conditions against forks, swing arms, shaft drive and chains. It is always a good idea to regularly inspect your tires for foreign objects, cuts and wear as well. Plug or Replace While some motorcycle tires still utilize tubes, tubeless construction is popular, and, as such, require repair of the tires as a pressurized unit. The procedure of inserting a glue covered plug into the offending hole is accepted practice for automotive applications. Performing such a fix on a motorcycle tire may be necessary if you are in the middle of nowhere, or just stuck for resources (i.e. there is not a replacement tire available locally). A less intrusive, but more time-consuming fix, is to remove the tire from the rim and vulcanize a patch on the inside of the tire. Many riders prefer to replace the tire at any sign of damage, but the type and use of your bike may dictate if the interior patch is to be considered to be a permanent fix. Should the bead or sidewall become compromised however replacement of the tire will usually be required. As a consumable component of motorcycling, your tires represent another cost in your yearly riding budget. Fuel, oil, brakes, insurance, maintenance are all important things to consider when purchasing a bike, but don’t neglect your tires. Having a properly maintained bike, good tires, and safety gear, are important steps towards a safe and successful riding career.

Riding Is Good for Your Health By SCOOT CALHOUN Everyone loves to tell us that riding a motorcycle is bad for our health. If these people are to be believed, riding is also incredibly dangerous - where the risk of personal injury, or even death, is enormous. In this article let’s compare the perception with the reality, in order to establish whether either of these statements is actually true or has a basis in the facts. Road Traffic Fatalities - facts First of all, let’s appreciate that the federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada work to improve road safety to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries. Their efforts were rewarded when, by 2017, we saw the lowest figures in all casualty groups since data was first collected (by Transport Canada) in the early 1970’s. According to the most recent study, there are just over 26 Million licensed drivers in Canada, of which there are 721 thousand motorcyclists. The total number of motorcyclist fatalities in 2017 was 191. Now, whilst any fatality is tragic, that annual fatality rate is only 0.026% of all registered motorcyclists. For cars, the total number of fatalities in 2017 was 1,296. That equates to an annual fatality rate of 0.05%. At face value, these figures are demonstrable proof that riding a motorcycle is, in fact, almost two times safer than driving a car. How does Canada compare? Another interesting statistic to look at is that, Canada has a traffic fatality rate of 6.0 per 100,000 people. Canada’s traffic fatality rate has steadily reduced over the last decade, and is almost on a par with European levels - where the average is 5.1 per 100,000 people. Europe, along with Australia, are the lowest rates in the world. In contrast, the United States has a traffic fatality rate, that is over twice as high as Canada’s, of 10.6 deaths per 100,000 people. Canada’s traffic fatality rate is not even close to the world’s highest - where annual rates are well in excess of 30 per 100,000 people. The highest traffic fatality rate in the world (according to the World Health Organisation) is Libya, with a staggering 73.4 deaths per 100,000 people. We suggest that you should cross Libya off your list of places to visit for your next motorcycle tour. Serious Injury or fatality? Whilst we have provided the data for road traffic fatalities, we have not discussed the figures for serious injury. There is a significant factor that resulted in a higher rate of road traffic fatalities than there could have been. This factor is the fatalities attributable to people in cars

not wearing seat belts. According to the 2017 data from Transport Canada, the percentage of fatalities directly correlated to people not wearing seat belts was 58.5%. That equates to 758 people. People that may well have survived their crash had they worn a seat belt. Unfortunately, Transport for Canada doesn’t break down the data on motorcycle-related crashes resulting in serious injury, rather than death.

There is plenty of scientific research out there that backs this up. There have been numerous studies on the cognitive benefits of riding a motorcycle. What can Motorcyclists do about it? So if that’s the figure for fatalities in cars - where people didn’t wear a seat belt - what does that mean to motorcycle riders? As riders, we obviously don’t have seatbelts or crumple zones. Our only protection, from serious injury or death, is what we are wearing. It’s been proven again and again that injuries, sustained during a motorcycle crash, could be significantly minimized through the wearing of the right protective gear. You don’t see motorcycle racers wearing shorts and a teeshirt do you … and they walk away relatively unscathed from even the most dramatic high-speed crashes. Surely that should tell you something about the importance of protective motorcycle gear. For those of you out there who remain insistent on not wearing any appropriate motorbike gear, let me just say this. A good friend of mine (a top surgeon at

There is motorbike gear out there that is specifically designed for hot weather. There are absolutely no excuses. It’s so simple, just invest in some proper gear. Remember this … it’s better to sweat than to bleed! Is Riding a Motorcycle bad for your health? Next, let’s examine whether riding a motorcycle is actually bad for your health.

This has positive effects on mental and emotional health and reduces stress. •Riding a motorcycle stimulates the brain. This improves memory, increases positivity, dramatically increases spatial reasoning, and reduces stress. The study also showed that riders have much higher levels of concentration than nonriders. In summary, riding a motorcycle promotes a healthy brain. There was also a study carried out by the York University Faculty of Health (cosupported by the Government of Nova Scotia). The findings outlined that the physical effort of riding a motorcycle (or an ATV) had a positive effect on health. •Riders demonstrated a 600% increase

in oxygen consumption and increased blood flow. In short, riding a motorcycle gives riders a total body workout, lowers blood pressure and dramatically increases muscle and skeletal fitness. •In addition, this particular longterm study also recorded the ‘emotional high’ from riding a motorcycle that resulted in an ‘enhanced quality of life and stress reduction.’ After reading through the research, here are the key health benefits of riding a motorcycle: •Mental Outlook - motorcycling stimulates your brain and boosts endorphins. This improves your mood, increases your happiness, improves your overall mental health, which in turn increases your lifespan. •Core Strength - The physicality associated with riding a motorcycle improves core strength. You actually get a lowimpact total body workout. Riders typically burn 400-600 calories an hour and passengers benefit too - typically burning 50-100 calories an hour. •Physical Fitness - Riding improves your neck and back muscles. This is also proven to be beneficial for people with minor back problems. Riding also helps strengthen your knees and thighs. In short, riding a motorcycle is a form of physical therapy and, over time, you’ll build up muscle whilst eliminating joint pains. Riding also increases your insulin sensitivity helping your metabolism. This, in turn, helps you burn more calories and store less fat. Finally, let’s consider some of the other benefits associated with riding a motorcycle. Friendships wherever you go It doesn’t matter who you are or what you ride, almost every rider will wave to one another on the highway. When they are out on the open road, the overwhelming majority of motorcycle riders are courteous to one another - as they are to other road users. They don’t cut one another up on the highway and always give one another plenty of riding respect. Sadly this is not the case with many car drivers. Riders will instinctively group together if they are travelling in the same direction. As well as that, most riders will join up when they stop for a snack - instantly bonding through their shared passion for motorcycles. This inherent kinship happens everywhere in the world. In fact, riding a motorcycle means instant friendship. Scientific studies show that healthy friendships reduce stress levels, promote feelings of well-being, leading to healthier lifestyles and more positive attitudes. Riding improves your mood It is undeniable that riding a motorcycle makes you happy. It offers a sense of freedom that few other activities can even compare with. We all know that happy people live longer lives, have stronger immune systems, and don’t suffer from anxiety or depression. The all consuming nature of riding improves your mental alertness making you feel ‘at one’ with your surroundings. Day to day problems are washed away as you ride, while the adrenaline rush makes you feel alive. So the next time someone tries to tell you that riding a motorcycle is extremely dangerous, and bad for your health, you know exactly what to say.

For one thing, they answer no urgent need. Motorcycles use so little fuel compared with cars that the proportionate gas savings of an electric bike are negligible for riders. And the pool of buyers has been in decline since the early 2000s; last year sales of new motorcycles in the U.S. dropped 8 percent from a year earlier, though the number of households with a motorcycle increased slightly, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. For a traditional manufacturer such as Harley-Davidson Inc. to spend roughly $825 million developing an electric bike, one not even in demand by most consumers, takes quite a leap of magical thinking. The Milwaukee-based company did it only under the duress of an otherwise declining business, its Project LiveWire electric motorcycle set for August and five more planned electrics seemingly like a Hail Mary pass that, if completed, could save the day for the near-petrified brand.

forth an electric motorcycle. Its primary electric bike is a scooter that’s just now sold in California. That hardly qualifies. One bright spot in the segment: Zero Motorcycles Inc. Started in 2006 by Neal Saiki, the Santa Cruz-based company has become exceptional in its ability to produce—and keep producing—sporty, reliable, and comely electric motorcycles. I’ve been reviewing Zero’s wares, such as the FX and DS, almost since the company’s inception. Its latest, the 2019 new model-year $10,995 Zero S, complements the line as a “naked street bike” member of the family. Rather than the knobby tires and bigger central body of a Dual Sport bike, the 313-pound machine has shed anything that might weigh it down, to maximize performance and efficiency. The result is a range of up to 223 miles in the city and 112 miles at highway speeds, the highest of anything made by Zero, and the most range of any electric motorcycle currently in production. That alone makes the Zero S a winner in my book— for a street bike that’s easy to maneuver, quick enough to escape traffic, and good-

In addition to the colloquial idea that they’re not “real” motorcycles, since they don’t have gears or a clutch, there’s a strong contingent of older riders who believe they’re not as safe. Their near-silent motors do little to alert cars to your presence as a rider, and when cars don’t see you, they’re more prone to hit you. Loud pipes save lives, the thinking goes. Combined, these challenges make it difficult for even the slickest of Silicon Valley designs to progress—let alone stay solvent. Alta Motorcycles, which had been in talks with Harley-Davidson to provide the electric power plant for Project LiveWire, announced its disintegration late last year. Mission Electric, which had been teasing an all-electric superbike since 2010, declared bankruptcy in 2015. Brammo had all but disappeared by 2017. Even BMW Motorrad, which has made exceptional two-wheeled driving machines since 1921 and experimented with two-wheeled electric technology for years, has been unable to justify bringing

On the FDR Drive, I hit 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds; by comparison, a standard Ducati Monster 1200 does it in just under 3 seconds. The Bosch brakes were receptive and firm, and the aerodynamic lean of the handlebars turned neatly into corners and maneuvered well through backups. They’d require no after-market modifications to make the bike look cool. And its lighter weight (most other bikes weigh around 90-plus pounds more) came with

When the weather’s decent, why bother with a car? As for competitors like Harley, inactivity for original equipment manufacturers doesn’t mean inability, and we can expect that old brand to hit hard—when it can finally throw a punch.

a nimbleness that would make it easier to handle for both smaller and casual riders. Driving is pure stealth: no grit, no oil,

these are the bikes for you. In general, I’m a fan. The responsibility of motorcycle riding lies on the rider; you should be riding as if you were invisible, anyway. Like the others in the Zero range, the 2019 Zero S uses lithium-ion power to slingshot you forward, but the range and charging scenario have improved. It takes 5.2 hours to reach a full charge for the lightest (7.2 kWh) outfit, with the battery life displayed on an easy-to-read digital monitor between the handlebars; an optional “Charge Tank” cuts that time to just an hour and a half. I charged mine overnight in the parking garage across from my apartment, plugging into a standard outlet—no sweat. On battery life, Zero says the bikes can travel about 200,000 total miles and still retain 80 percent of their original charging capacity. Yet, what truly set the 2019 Zero S apart for me was the integrated tech. Data from each and every ride are sent to the Zero Motorcycles app, where you can track information on how many miles the bike has left, how much time until it’s charged, your average watts spent per

Customer Requirements

From the moment you arrive, you realize that the sales people are passionate about riding, and all things motorcycle-related. These guys want to get it right. They take the time to listen and understand your requirements. Not only is this refreshing, it’s also a very pleasant surprise.

Product knowledge

The team at Budds’ are exceptionally knowledgeable about their products. For us, a detailed understanding of the motorcycles is sales one-on-one. Thankfully these guys really know their stuff. The fact that they are able to answer most questions, for the entire range of BMW motorcycles, is reassuring and confidence building.

Good Product Range

Budds’ is a relatively small BMW dealership. However, don’t let that put you off. Even with this restriction, they do stock the key motorcycles from the BMW range. From the entry-level, beginner-friendly G310R; to the ever-popular R1250GS; to the cafe-racer-inspired RNineT; right through to the remarkable K1600 cruiser.

Customer Events

Budds’ offers customer events, which seem to be well supported by BMW Canada. There are frequent BMW demo/test-ride days. Budds’ ran a 2019 model launch evening in April. This was a very professional event, comprising drinks and a buffet. It was well attended and enabled customers (and potential buyers) to explore BMW’s 2019 model line-up in a marvellously relaxed atmosphere. Nice one Budds’!

Service Department

Budds’ service department seemed good where the technicians were both enthusiastic and positive. We spoke to some customers who were all very satisfied with Budds’ servicing capabilities. Customers of the service department may find the small premises restrictive though, as there is nowhere to sit and wait - even though they can use the lounge area in the adjoining MINI showroom - but more of that later.

Long-term customer relationship

Budds’ focus on service, is evident in the way that the team understands the value of building long-term relationships with its’ customers. As already mentioned, they take the time to get to

know their customers’ needs and will advise accordingly. We’re sure that the team would have no hesitation in actually recommending suitable alternatives (other than a BMW) if the customer’s needs dictated it. This just highlights that Budds’ team knows that customers will appreciate this in the long run, and will return to purchase a BMW another day. This strategy of putting the customer first is a key differentiator for Budds’. So far all of this is very positive, but are there any areas for improvement?

The premises

First and foremost, Budds’ showroom

leaves a lot to be desired. It does take on the appearance of an after-thought that is attached to the MINI showroom. BMWs are premium motorcycles so customers should, quite rightly, expect premium facilities. The limitations of the premises manifest themselves in several key areas.

Motorcycle Clothing

Hardly any of the motorcycle dealers stock a broad range of clothing or accessories and, unfortunately, Budds’ are no exception. This was a surprise as, BMW motorcycle clothing is of the highest quality - right up there with the likes of Rukka, Dainese, and Rev’it. Budds’ is a

In the showroom, there is also an absence of BMW motorbike and lifestyle accessories. For example, where are all the ‘goodies’ a customer might wish to add to their BMW R Nine T? Customers want ideas for products that enhance their motorcycle lifestyle. Perhaps Budds’ should speak to BMW to get more accessories in the showroom? We appreciate that holding a wide range of motorcycle clothing and accessories is a significant investment for any dealer. However, Budds’ are not addressing customers needs and they are missing an opportunity. Budds’ could easily be the ‘one stop shop’ for BMW customers. With the wide range of accessories that BMW offers, surely customers should have the opportunity to buy some of it? In contrast, the dealers in other countries sell complete ‘packages’ to customers - the motorcycle, the helmet, some accessories and all the gear to go with it.

Destination Budds!

Even though Budds’ runs some customer-oriented events, wouldn’t it be fantastic if the dealership became more of a destination for riders? A place for a brief coffee, a chat, and a chance to buy some clothing or accessories. Perhaps the occasional bike night. It amazes us that motorcycle dealers rarely have a comfortable seating area for customers. Customers who are waiting to collect their bikes and want a coffee as well. The peculiar part of this is that the MINI showroom (directly connected to the motorcycle showroom) has a coffee and lounge area. A top of the range K1600 Grand America costs more than a MINI Countryman, so how come there are luxurious surroundings for MINI customers, but nothing dedicated for motorcyclists? Better still, why not just combine the showrooms? MINI customers can view motorcycles and vice versa. Much of our criticism is focused on Budds’ (less than ideal) physical premises. These may be minor points but they make the difference between a good dealership and a great one. Even with this limitation, the sales team does an admirable job. What shines through is a focus on putting the customer first. The guys totally understand that motorcycles are a people-oriented lifestyle. In summary, BMW is a premier motorcycle brand and we are pleased to say that Budds’ customer service is in line with that.

Harley Davidson FXDR 114 Riding position

By MARK WHITEHOUSE As a writer, I am often asked to leave my preferred comfort zone for a story. Being from the UK, Harley Davidson isn’t a motorcycle that has a strong foot hold, so my experience is limited and what I did encounter, I didn’t like. With that being said, here’s my take on the Harley Davidson FXDR. Unless my eyes deceive me, I seem to be looking at upside-down front forks, twin front brake disks with ABS, mono shock adjustable rear suspension, keyless ignition and a digital dash. Hold on! Is this a Harley Davidson or another brand with an HD tank badge? Whatever it is, this looks very promising indeed. This looks like Harley Davidson have entered the 21st Century … at last!

Style and Stance

The minimalist design expresses the purposeful nature of this drop-dead gorgeous motorbike. From virtually every angle the FXDR looks like it means business. The fit and finish are up to the usual Harley standards and there are some lovely styling touches. From the rear view, your eyes are drawn to the massive 240-section rear tyre. The rear end will not be to everyone’s taste, but I like it just the way it is. This bike is sure to capture plenty of admiring looks, whether riding on the highway or parked up.

OMG Harley what have you done here? The riding position felt completely unnatural. Sure, some people will acclimatize to this over time whilst others will immediately wish to address things. There were three key issues here. •Forward controls - Simply put, the foot pegs should not be in that ridiculous forward position. For a motorbike that is announcing its sporting intent, this is a total mistake. At the time of writing this, Harley doesn’t provide an option to relocate the pegs to the mid position - where they should have been in the first place. This ‘feet forward’ riding position felt all wrong for the FXDR and made me feel uncomfortable right from the get go. •Handlebars - The Bars, or rather the ‘clip-ons’, are beautifully crafted but they are just that little bit too far forward. Combining this with the forward controls, you are stretched out more than you should be. From this odd riding position, how are you expected to enjoy the good handling that Harley claims for the FXDR? •Air intake - Whilst it manages to look great, the air intake is in the way. Your right leg/knee will be constantly colliding with it as you ride. On first impression, Harley appears to have sacrificed function in favour of style. How irritating!

Riding the FXDR

The dominant feature of the FXDR is its power plant. This 114cu (1,868cc) engine offers plenty of grunt. With 116Nm of torque, power is somewhere between ‘who cares’

and ‘good enough’. Acceleration is effortless and smooth while the gearbox is a pleasure to use. With all of that power, it was reassuring that the brakes were up to the job. Even though the FXDR looks lean and mean it is still topping the scales at 303kg (668lbs). That’s only 2kg lighter than the Breakout 107. The stock exhaust is very heavy and needs a better heat shield to avoid you cooking your right leg - especially at a stop. Handling on the FXDR is good, with the high ground clearance that allows for more aggressive lean angles than you would expect from a Harley. The rear mono shock is simple to adjust but there didn’t seem to be any means to adjust the front. Moving to the FXDR’s controls. The sleek design of the LCD display provides plenty of information but nowhere near as good as it should be. Viewing the information - especially at highway speeds - can be problematic. The handle bar controls are familiar Harley items. Finally, the mirrors can only be described as utterly useless, unless you want a view of your arms. The FXDR is a capable motorbike that is a solid all-round performer. It’s fun to ride, looks terrific, handles well enough but doesn’t really excel at anything.

Identity Crisis

The FXDR is nothing like as sporty as Harley claims. It’s also not a long distance cruiser, as 100km is about the maximum that most people will be able to cope with in one go. It’s also not a weapon for carving through the canyons - the riding position

and the fat rear tyre doesn’t allow for that. So what exactly is it? With the FXDR, it’s rather wonderful that Harley has made a small, but radical, departure from their norm. Harley purists will hate the FXDR, but that is no bad thing. If this is not going to appeal to Harley purists, who will it appeal to? This is a Harley for non-Harley riders. The rider who wants the Harley experience but still expects a motorbike to handle and perform well. When all is said and done, the FXDR is a 21st century take on the V-Rod with an appreciative nod to Harley’s heritage.

Transforming the FXDR

Harley Davidson have been making motorbikes since 1903. In those 116 years you would expect that Harley would know a thing or two about motorbikes. However, in standard form, the FXDR is not a ‘sorted’ motorbike and that’s really annoying. The asking price of around $27k is genuinely ridiculous, made even more so when you add in the essential upgrades. With the air box, mirrors, handlebars and exhaust modifications you are looking at well over $30k. Plus, you need a solution for those foot controls. It’s hard to ignore the price point for the FXDR. Maybe this is a victim of American export tariffs. It’s hard to forget the flaws of the FXDR but, strangely, I want to. With all its’ faults the FXDR is one of the only Harleys that has even appealed to me. Its personality lies on the spectrum between ‘eccentric’ and ‘an acquired taste’. You will either love it or you will hate it.

ROCKRIDE is ready to roar through Niagara Region

The Thomas family have been running the ROCKRIDE for 15 years in memory of little Samantha, who gained her angel wings on May 18, 2003. Sammy was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in September 2002; she had a tumour the size of a grapefruit in her tiny chest. Doctors told Bob & Lori that she would have died in her crib within a few days if they had not taken her in when they did. The next nine months were spent mainly in hospital, both London and Toronto Sick Kids, for rounds of chemotherapy and ultimately a bone marrow transplant. Despite the successful transplant and some encouraging signs, Sammy eventually ended up in a medically induced coma, on a respirator. A week later, her parents headed for home, an empty car-seat buckled in the back. The following year they ran their first charity ride, drawing 47 riders and raising $13,000. Now in 2019, they will reach their half-a-million-$milestone, with every dollar going to the C17 Research Fund via Childhood Cancer Canada. Bob moved his family from Corunna to Niagara Falls to take on a new job; and brought the ride to Niagara the following summer. The event has grown steadily in the last three years, with 120 riders raising $39,000 in 2018. The Niagara ROCKRIDE will start

at Clare’s Harley-Davidson, 590 York Rd. Niagara-on-the-lake on Saturday July 6th. This year is a Yahtzee Run, with dice rolls at: Clare’s, Lions Hall in Chippawa, Fort Erie Fire Hall, Tons of Bike Gear, and the finale at Oh Canada Eh! Prizes are always plentiful at the R.O.C.K. with packages for Top Ten Fundraisers, Best Yahtzee Hand winning a $250 gas card, door prizes, and a Grand Prize of a 1-week luxury cottage rental up north. Free rider shirts for the first 100, midpoint BBQ, and the coveted Club Cup for the club or team raising the most funds.
