INDUSTRY NEWS

Suzuki V-Strom 250 might come to US and Canada Suzuki is supposed to be considering bringing the V-Strom 250 adventure bike to North America. The news comes in the aftermath of last week’s AIME show in Columbus, Ohio; Suzuki had the V-Strom 250 on display at its booth, and was soliciting feedback, trying to gauge customer interest. If there was enough enthusiasm, Suzuki said the bike could be brought into the USA. It would also appear in the Canadian market as well. It should have no trouble passing emissions testing, as it’s based around the made-in-China GW250 platform, with a liquid-cooled parallel twin engine. The GW250 and a couple other machines based off that engine have already been sold in Canada for years, and it should only be a formality to approve another bike with the same emissions ratings. Would anyone actually buy the V-Strom 250? The answer would depend on price. The V-Strom 250 faces stiff competition from more exciting and capable competition like the Kawasaki Versys-X 300 and the Honda CRF250 Rally. Suzuki’s angle would be to beat them on pricing, which it likely could do quite handily, if it chose to. The GW250 is regularly available for around $3,500 US plus fees (including a five-year warranty!); if Suzuki could bring the V-Strom 250 in for about $1,000 US more with factory luggage included, there would be buyers. That price point is unlikely, though. But, even if it’s priced a little higher, there’s still room for a budget touring bike. No small-capacity factory touring machine has been sold in North America for many, many years. The last one of note was probably Honda’s GL500 Silver Wing, and even those machines were far bigger than this Suzuki. This could be a chance for Suzuki to create a new market. Even if buyers are sketchy on the idea of a made-in-China motorcycle, the five-year warranty has to be reassuring, especially in a machine that might be expected to do long miles.

XSR700 Coming this Fall Sport Meets Heritage: Retro Middleweight Heads to North America For Canadian retro motorcycle enthusiasts, the wait is over. After selling more than 11,000 units in Europe since 2015, the Yamaha XSR700 is coming to Canada. The newest addition to Yamaha’s Sport Heritage range, the XSR700 combines classic retro styling with contemporary technology to create a riding experience that’s both stress-free and exciting. With a proven inline twin-cylinder engine

and light, agile chassis, the XSR700 is designed for the enthusiast who appreciates heritage and loves to ride. Based on the popular FZ-07, the XSR700 uses a foundation of sporty performance, nimble handling, riding comfort and ease of use to reconnect today’s riders with the essential joys of motorcycling. A healthy dose of classic styling adds character to complement the performance of this middleweight naked sport bike; the ‘throwback’ treatment includes a sculpted, aluminum-shrouded tank

with classic striping, a vintage-inspired round headlight, two-texture vintagestyle leather seat and perforated side covers. An all-LCD instrument gauge provides a handsome modern contrast to the overall retro vibe. The XSR700 is powered by the liquidcooled, 689 cc inline twin engine from the FZ-07. Utilizing a 270-degree “crossplane concept” crank for improved rider/machine communication, the XSR produces a meaty 50 ft-lb of torque at 6,500 rpm. A wet weight continued on PG. 03

of just 186 kg (410 lb) makes the bike both easy to manoeuvre at low speeds and flickable on twisty roads. Smooth, controllable power delivery and an 835 mm (32.9 in) seat height are sure to entice graduating riders looking to move up to a retro-styled, midsize street bike. The diamond-type steel backbone frame uses the engine as a stressed member and is mated to a gull-wing-style swingarm via an adjustable-link Monocross rear suspension unit. A 41 mm front fork takes care of handling duties up front. Dual 282 mm front discs and a single 245 mm rear disc provide stopping power (ABS is standard), while 10-spoke cast aluminum wheels are shod with Pirelli Phantom tires that carry an authentic tread pattern. The business of selling motorcycles

About three weeks ago, I was in New York City on a mini vacation. As I was walking the buzzing streets of the Big Apple I passed by a store window just off of Times Square that had a motorcycle displayed in the window. I stopped for a moment and realized it was an OCC chopper that had be commissioned for marketing purposes. I stood and looked over the bike for a few minutes, and soon realized that nobody even noticed it was there. To be fair, the bike was competing for attention in the one place in NYC where if it’s not lit up like daylight with monster display screens or flashing neon lighting there’s not much chance it would get noticed. But that got me to thinking about motorcycling and its popularity these days. I have heard it said by large men speaking quietly amongst themselves and eating bananas while seeking refuge by lurking in the shadows of dark narrow alleys that sales figures are indicating that motorcycling among Millennials, (as I like to call them ‘live at home adults’) is not reaching projected sales expectations. Before I get into the most obvious reasons why it would seem like sales are on the decline amongst some of the mega-manufacturers, I think it’s important to have some sort of baseline from which to examine this claim. So I got to noodling this a little bit and realized that I needed some real numbers to

work with, so off to Stats Canada I went. According to Stats Canada, we have some of the lowest numbers of motorcycles registered in the world mostly due to climate. Since 1999, motorcycle and mopeds registered in Canada has increased annually from 273,957 to a whopping 716,264 units registered. If we look at Ontario alone, during that same period of time registrations have increased from 74,615 in 1999 to more than 219,933 units registered. These stats show that sales are up overall not down, so why would these large men who speak quietly say that this isn’t the case? Perhaps there are some elemental facts they have neglected to recognize. Millennials generally speaking have no disposable income to splurge on wants. They are too busy trying to make ends meet and pay enormous rents or mortgages. Not to mention the enormous parking fees in most metrolpolis cities. My guess is that any transportation they do choose to purchase is likely to accommodate their needs throughout all of our wonderful seasons, not just the sunny warm ones. I have taken the time to visit local motorcycle training facilities, and to me, it’s obvious that there is still an interest in motorcycles. This also means that there is a stream of new riders every week entering into the dark side. Each of these new riders usually has it figured out in their minds what they plan to purchase for better or worse. The one

common thread is affordability. New riders are more likely to look at used bikes for their first set of wheels or smaller displacement bikes that carry a smaller price tag. As they progress and gain experience the prospect of a new purchase becomes more realistic and then that dream bike comes along but it happens in thier 40’s. So, although the numbers support an overall increase in registrations and therefore sales, the stats do not indicate what the ratio of new purchases to used purchases is. I would think that if sales numbers were not meeting projections other factors are involved like price point and cost of ownership, maybe even environmental issues. Lets also not forget about supply and demand. It’s been told to me that dealers are continually being sent more units than they have asked for causing the market to become saturated. And since supply out paces demand those dealers are forced to chop pricing, sometimes below cost just to move inventory which translates to lower sales figures and profits. The thing is this, when it’s all said and done, when the numbers and the stats have been crunched and the beans have all been counted, motorcycling is as popular today as it has ever been. The chopper years were a blip in this industry and now that its mainstream popularity is all but gone, it’s back to business as usual.

OPP lay dozens of charges after video of GTA motorcycle stunts posted to social media.

Charges have been laid and bikes have been seized by OPP officers after a motorcyclist stunt on the highway. Ontario Provincial Police say that they were able to lay dozens of charges against motorcyclists who performed dangerous and coordinated stunts on highways around the GTA because some of the riders recorded the activity with GoPro cameras and then bragged about it on social media. “Many examples of these illegal activities were captured on video and uploaded to the net as entertainment. We thank the participants for providing us with this evidence,” Supt. Alison Jevons told reporters. Jevons said the investigation, dubbed “Project Saddle” spanned from June - September and was sparked by numerous incidents on highways around the city where people reported seeing motorcyclists doing stunts, swarming vehicles, speeding and stopping in live lanes of traffic. In one particular incident in August, riders performed aggressive moves on a number of highways, police said, including the Gardiner Expressway, The Don Valley Parkway, Highway 403 & 401. “Dozens of riders actively participated in numerous coordinated stunts that purposefully snarled traffic,” Insp. Scott Naylor said. “Clearly they have put the lives of participants, the safety of other road users and pedestrians in jeopardy.” Jevons and Naylor said that while identifying the suspects was difficult, it was made possible by reviewing some of the videos that riders posted to social media channels to brag about their stunts. Naylor added that the videos speak to a trend that needs to be curbed. “It appears the advent of social media platforms and personal portable high def

cameras has fueled this phenomenon,” he said. “The activity obviously has an audience that we need to cut off before the stunts are emulated and repeated and another tragedy occurs.” He pointed out that some of the activity took place during a period when there had been a high number of motorcycle-involved road fatalities and numerous warnings about motorcycle safety from police. Police said that while the accused do not appear to be members of outlaw motorcycle gangs, they are organized and sell merchandise such as t-shirts to fuel their activities. “The same subculture of riders has been known to refuse to stop for police and have swarmed police officers in a threatening manner on several occasions,” Naylor said. “Enough is enough.” In all, five motorcycles were seized and 48 charges were laid as part of the investigation. The accused are from Toronto, Vaughan, Mississauga and Brampton. In particular, police said 10 people are facing a combined 35 criminal charges that include dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, mischief, conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of mischief and flight while pursued by a peace officer. Other charges laid as part of the investigation include driving while suspended, no licence plates, plates not visible, improper helmets, and improper permits and equipment. Seven of the primary accused have already made court appearances while there are outstanding warrants for three other people.

Indian Motorcycles Sales Shot Up 17 Percent Last Spring

According to some, motorcycling is dying. Millennials are slower to adopt motorcycling than previous generations and Harley-Davidson sales are down which surely spells the end of the entire industry. However, some sales figures say otherwise. Indian Motorcycles, America’s first motorcycle company, saw an impressive 17 percent surge in sales last Spring. Not only that, but Indian now makes up for 16 percent of the portfolio for its parent company Polaris. If motorcycling is dying, Indian sure isn’t feeling it. For that matter, neither are BMW nor Royal Enfield. The growth at Indian is in sharp contrast to that of Milwaukee rival HarleyDavidson. Harley sales were down 6.7 percent worldwide and 9.3 percent in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2017 compared to the same time last year. According to the president of motorcycles at Polaris Steve Menneto, it has a lot to do with the heritage of the Indian

brand. “It’s a brand that’s rich in its heritage and history, and I think that’s what’s adding a lot to our growth,” Menneto said. “It’s an exciting brand to be a part of.” But Harley-Davidson famously has heritage in spades and it’s the driving force of the whole brand, so what makes Indian different? Polaris director of motorcycle operations at the Spirit Lake, Iowa production plant thinks it has something to do with the pride the workers put into the products. “We’ve got a great workforce, great facility, a lot of pride behind producing the product,” Dansby said. Personally, I don’t think that tells the whole story. I think Indian is surging because it hit the nail on the head in terms of making good, desirable products at decent prices that appeal to the demographics the motorcycle industry needs to stay alive. Indian struck just the right blend of heritage, modern styling and engineering and it’s paying off in the sales.

Biketoberfest’s 25th Chrome Anniversary Still On Oct. 19-22

Two weeks after Hurricane Irma worked its way up the center of the state of Florida, the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) says the area’s tourism industry is recovering swiftly. “Tourism is a significant economic engine in Volusia County,” said CVB Executive Director Lori Campbell Baker. “While local government, residents and businesses are working together to complete storm-related repairs, we know people plan their travel in advance so we are working to get the message out that our coast is clear and the majority of the area’s hotels, restaurants and attractions are ready to welcome visitors.” Major festivals and events in October are on, including the Daytona Blues Festival, LPGA Symetra Tour Championship and Biketoberfest, the area’s largest fall festival. Biketoberfest is on, pass it on! “Biketoberfest alone generates an economic impact of more than $40 million. The event will pump much-needed revenues into our local businesses,” said Campbell Baker. “We want to assure rally-goers, some who have attended every year, we absolutely will be ready to celebrate the 25th Chrome Anniversary of Biketoberfest October 19-22. Biketoberfest is on, pass it along!” Campbell Baker explains the motorcycle rally’s core audience has grown over the years to include more women riders, international visitors, sports bike enthusiasts and younger riders who are drawn to the rally’s signature racing events at Daytona International Speedway. The rally tradition will continue along Main Street, Riverfront Park and Midtown in Daytona Beach, as well as at Destination Daytona and U.S. Hwy 1 in Ormond Beach, and throughout Volusia County in nearby New Smyrna Beach and DeLand. At the Official Biketoberfest Welcome Center on Beach Street, staff will be handing out free (while supplies last) 25th Anniversary collectible Official Biketoberfest posters, pocket guides and pins, and encouraging visitors to mark their home town on world maps. About the Daytona Beach Area and Biketoberfest Discover the new Daytona Beach and its surrounding area, a resurging destination along Florida’s East Coast comprising eight distinct communities. Since 1993, Biketoberfest has drawn thousands of riders to its motorcycle rally in Daytona Beach every October. Recognized worldwide for its annual events including Bike Week, the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Daytona 500, Daytona Beach’s famed heritage also claims the headquarters of LPGA and NASCAR — and is home to Daytona International Speedway, the ‘World Center of Racing.’ With 23 miles of world-famous beaches ideal for swimming and surfing, it is no surprise Daytona Beach was choosen to host such an iconic event. The Silence of the Roar

Think about that statement. How does a base jumper describe that moment, poised post leap before the fall begins or a downhill ski racer when the violence of clattering steel edges on ice melts away into the serene. To the outsider we must seem hectic and loud, maybe even a threat. A flurry of complicated jabs and stabs at unfathomable controls as we rush by them leaving echoes of strange sounds and colors in our wake. But for us, well you know the silence we find inside of the roar and how we crave it. How we must sometimes escape from this world. Cornered by Superior and Ontario my home can drown in the humidity that is sucked out of those Great Lakes in the lull of summer but if you rise early, before the oppression can take hold, nirvana waits to be found on a twisting north country road. As the night raced it’s way to the west a single finch tests the new day awakening them all and their symphony plays to a crescendo in the gloom. The tink of a spoon against porcelain sounds strange and hollow in comparison and as I set the coffee mug down to check the chain’s tension, it begins. In that moment, while still pinching the links, I close my eyes and hear the silence as the predawn of my garage disappears. I feel the sublime workings of a balanced bike as suspension and chassis tell me of the dangers and the joy and trusting my life to this machine I linger at axles and caliper bolts. The safety wire assures me that the physical things are ready. The bird song stops and I gather my gear, it’s time. Zippers cocoon me inside of leather and carbon fiber and as I shrug one last time to fit, the brawn of my suit becomes a part of me and I feel like I am home. I was made for this. A final check of the bike and then a familiar squeeze as the helmet slips on and D rings are threaded and pulled tight without a thought. This world and its harrowing ways begins to fade and I know that my mind is ready. A simple press of a button and the engine explodes into a pulsing rhythm as the gear driven camshafts control the violence. Unlike the din of modern life this sound I fell in love with years ago and in my minds eye I see the cogs spinning in the oily dark behind the magnesium covers, seamless in their perfection. Clutch, then snick into first. Fuel and air to match the friction and I make my escape. The first rays of sun find a path

through the trees and smiling behind the dark visor I flash through as every moment in this new world brings wonder and anticipation of the next. Electric green grass and the smell of freshly cut hay overwhelm me but then light and dark strobe again and I am reset. Now forest and swamp warn of wet patches in the shadows and as the road dips I shiver through a cloud of morning mist and somewhere in that murk I found the silence. Again, flittering shadows bring lost loves and forgotten places from the edge of my memory. I hear soft laughter inside my helmet as rocky farmland whisks by, is that me ? Like being inside an old movie projector the flickering sunlight shows me moments out of time. Friends, alive and dead ride in formation and from the roadside half a century of experiences watch as I zoom past with my heart exposed in the wind. The thrum of spinning tires tells me of a fable where control and abandon are found together, just up the road a piece. As the roar of today’s world perceives the threat I pose, it begs me to stop but it’s too late. My mechanical mavin surges ahead carrying me away from the grind of life as it tries one last time to hold on but the curves are coming. Systems check and the cool tires squirm. Gently now, a few turns first and then as grip returns, I move forward and caress the controls. The man made scar that I ride on swoops and dives and soon takes me past a small lake that is hidden from view but I know its there. Non-descript really, relative to the thousands of other blue splashes here in the rocky highlands, but this one is special. Slowing a bit to margin off enough mind I remember the sparkle off the waves and the sun’s heat of that day, I relive the discovery. Unsigned, the artist left a drawing of windswept pine trees wavering just at the waterline. A tiny rendition of what my silence is like etched onto the rock to bare witness. Together you and I sit on that shore and dream, we have escaped. Time runs short now as a feeble bleat from far behind catches up to me. A vestige filled with all the deadlines and pressure, the worry and waste, the hate and it’s gaining ground. Damn you, not yet and as I smile behind the dark visor the engine blares and the wind fills my ears but beautiful silence is what I hear. Sun and shade flash and I am reset, the roar is gone.

Wandering with My Old Man justin coffey before we were ready to depart,

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

“I don’t like the look of the big wheel,” said my father. “It’s not classic. It’s not an Indian.” He was referring to the 19-inch front wheel on the 2017 Indian Chieftain Elite I had already decided to name the Raspberry Starship. It was a big, beautiful, American Vtwin with chrome on top of chrome, custom sparkle paint, a seven-inch touchscreen navigation system and more speakers than your high school girlfriend’s Saturn. Ostentatious is an understatement. My father decided that for our latest trip he’d ride the 2017 Indian Chieftain with the skirted front wheel and a two-tone, black-oversilver paint scheme. Classic. The first time we played this game — a father-son motorcycle trip — we spent a month in Mexico, wandering our way south on dual-sports. That was the first time my old man had been on a bike since 1972. True story. Since then however, we’ve managed a handful of other trips, from the Pacific Northwest to the Blue Ridge Parkway. This time, the idea was to ride Route 66. Pick up these big, beautiful things outside of Los Angeles and head east, rumbling our way down the Great American Highway, stopping at silly roadside attractions, or whatever. But about a week

I had to bring a bike from Phoenix to Los Angeles by way of Interstate 10, then from Los Angeles to Seattle on Interstate 5. Both rides tested my willingness to be on a bike again. Ever. With temperatures similar to those on the surface of the sun, I spent most of my time emptying cold water bottles into my pants and pounding electrolyte drinking products. It was awful. When I reached Seattle, and told this tale to my old man over a cold pint poured at our local place, he shook his head with that “No way am I going through that, too” kind of enthusiasm. So, a new plan was hatched. A cooler plan. If I’m being honest, I don’t know much about California save for the coastline. Palm Springs — yea, got that. But the mountain range that runs down the middle, ya know, the Sierras. Nope. My father had spent his post-high school years hitch-hiking up and down the west coast and had an idea: howsabout we head to this little ghost town on the east side of the Sierra Mountains? A destination, that’s what we needed. And since Google provided stimulating pictures and a copy of Butler Maps’ Southern California edition helped us sort out how we’d get there, we were good to go – in theory. Along the way we planned to check out China Peak, a quaint mountain resort

where an event aimed at scramblerstyle motorcycle owners was being held that coming weekend. We’d then loop back on the good roads, dragging our feet and biding our time until the City of Angels swallowed us whole. But first we had to get out of L.A. And my father hadn’t split a lane in his life. Headset communications devices can save your life. They can provide turn-by-turn navigation, music on demand, and let you listen to your old lady go on about the scenery and stuff. They can also make you crazy. The kind of crazy you get when you listen to someone call out all the obstacles, obstructions and “oh shit” moments on your motorcycle ride. Like a really bad backseat driver, only, in your helmet, and, also your father. You picking up what I’m putting down? The last time we did this, Kyra and I set the old guy up with a SENA 10S so that we could keep tabs on each other as we wandered up the East Coast. We learned our lesson. No SENA this time. Navigating DTLA on an Indian Chieftain Elite with your father in tow is stressful enough. Add the anecdotes and

expletives that were streaming from his face, and the whole experience would be downright dangerous. Er, more dangerous. But the old bastard was there every time I checked my mirror. The frontend of his Indian filling my chrome teardrop. Occasionally I’d get ahead of myself, turn up the music and give the old guy the bird — disappearing into a chasm of silver sedans and inattentive landscape architects. But when I’d apply the brakes and look back, I could see him muscling that monster between cars and trucks, making his way, as he should. Out of L.A., we put on the pipes and made up for lost time. We stopped for dinner with friends from the Veterans Charity Ride, who are doing amazing stuff, so look them up. The next morning, we made more miles – following the floral-lined Highway 99 to Fresno where we ate tacos and answered obvious questions about our bikes. The scrambler thing at China Peak was our next destination. That two-night sojourn turned into a chance encounter with a few fellow Indian enthusiasts, one of which owns a mint 1948 Chief (add a bold OK emoji here). Among the scram-

blers, the hill climb would have been a righteous undertaking aboard my beautiful Raspberry Starship, but the late-night campfire shenanigans and tall tales at the bar made up for anything I missed. The morning we were scheduled to depart, though, the weather took a turn. For the last few days we’d been blissful in our 70-something surroundings, at elevation, avoiding all the excessive heat. But a cold front had come in, dropping the daily average to just about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. We consulted the Great Google, who told us our Ghost Town was even worse. Turns out it’s notorious for being the coldest place in California. Go figure. So, with weather rolling in, and even worse things over our proverbial horizon, we pow-wowed. Cold is the kind of thing you can endure. Add layers. Stop often. A warm cup of coffee and something in your stomach so your system kicks into gear. Hot, however, is the sort of shit that just kills you. Water, obviously, but there’s only so much you can handle. So my argument went. “We can make it,” I said, urging him on. “It’s not thaaaaaat cold.” “Bullshit,” decreed my dad. And on that note, we set our sights on Cambria, a small coastal town just south of Big Sur. I’d been, and had told him about it, so he was eager to see it for himself. And the coast would be cool, not freezing. But before the coast was this big, empty thing called The

Middle of California. And it was hot. As it turns out, I was wrong. I often am. The central section of California which we dissected on our Indians all afternoon was some of the most beautiful country I’ve ridden across. The Golden State it is. Hills rolled out in front of us like area rugs your kids have been roughhousing on. Green quickly turned to gold, then, gold turned into an iridescent blue when the sea came into sight. We hit the ocean, took a few photos and then turned north toward town. We settled in, pulled out our map and decided on our next destination: Ventura, by way of Ojai. Highway 33. When you’re traveling with friends or family, you make exceptions. Sure,

take the room with the TV, and the hot tub and the full bath and kingsize bed. Yea, I’ll sleep out here on the fold-out. No problem. You especially make these exceptions when said family member is your father, and he’s got his Tony Soprano thing going on. I’d have slept on the floor, because the house we rented in Ventura was a prime cut of meat in a ground beef kind of town. I said hot tub, right? Two nights wasn’t enough. We wandered Main Street, drank too many Mai Tais with the woman who built the Batmobile (fact), ate late-night ice cream and just generally had good times. The end of this story starts sort of the same way it began. Me, staring

shamelessly at the Raspberry Starship parked outside of some place we’ve rented, wondering why I like the damn thing so much. But here’s where things get interesting. After swapping seats from Ojai to Ventura, allowing the old guy to ride my ripefruit-colored candy machine, I heard something I was sure I wouldn’t. “I think I’d rather have the 19inch wheel.” Whaaaat?! Blasphemy. Bullshit! But it was her nimble nature and graceful corner entry that convinced the Old Guard. He could not care less about the flashy paint and extra audio equipment, but the way she worked is what he liked, and that’s how it should be, yeah?

about further adds to the calm - any biker knows all too well the pain that wrists and forearms experience after a few miles of constant clutch work. And, happily, if you’re worried that the Zero SR won’t handle perfectly like your conventional bike, you’re wrong. Riding the SR feels like riding a normal motorcycle - despite a very bulky battery sitting in the frame where an engine usually would, it handles and responds very well. In fact, the very weight is carried so low down that it almost feels like riding a cruiser, except the wheelbase is much shorter. It even has brakes and tires just like you’d find on any typical motorcycle - an ABS system straight from Bosch, Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tyres and adjustable suspension from Showa. You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Zero SR is somehow a simple machine though; that couldn’t be further from the truth. It has an internet-generation trick up its sleeves - the entire bike is configurable via a

smartphone app. From it, you’ve access to a myriad of information related to the battery and its current state of charge, trip information and performance, various metrics such as how much cash you’ve saved by using electricity rather than gas and grammes of CO2 saved. But the pièce de résistance is it’s ability to configure top speed, torque, engine braking and energy regeneration levels. And you will want to play with the torque settings, because the sheer amount on offer - 116 lb ft - is enough to rip your arms out of their sockets. That’s more than KTM’s 1290 SuperDuke GT. All that torque makes for a complete weapon on the road. Combined with the fact there’s no clutch to balance and all of those 116 torques are available from 0rpm, the SR will launch off the line effortlessly and you’ll win every game of traffic light GP - even against bikes with three times the horsepower. With that much acceleration on tap, dart-

ing between lanes is a piece of cake, overtakes are dealt with in the blink of an eye and if you’re sufficiently liberal with your right hand, well, you know what it’ll do. But, beware, there’s no traction control. One thing’s for certain: when an electric motor can make commuting this easy and this much fun, electric motorcycles are bound to become an ever increasing presence in the two wheeled world. The downsides are few and far between, and the only ones we can point at is without an optional upgrade, you can’t plug it into a conventional EV charging port, so it’s possible to get stranded if you’re pushing the “tank range”, which we estimate to be around 90 miles of mixed riding (45 miles if you’re riding like a proverbial idiot). Instead you’ll need to find a threepin wall outlet, but with time that optional extra will no doubt become a standard feature. Got a city commute? Get a Zero SR. You definitely won’t regret it.

tective motorcycle clothing tends to trap heat rather than deflect it. That’s why motorcyclists prefer to filter between traffic rather than sit in it - it’s not that they’re constantly in a rush or have a death wish, it’s just that by maintaining momentum, there’s a constant breeze keeping you cool. The Zero SR suffers neither of these traits, which makes it a joy to ride in the city. In fact, it’s the perfect bike to commute anywhere between 20 and 60 miles on every day. At that distance, there’s plenty of life in the battery for a thrilling ride with zero danger of being left stranded. You won’t need to ride with ear plugs because there’s simply not any engine or exhaust noise to block out in the first place. And as there’s no heat either, you’re far less hot, and so dangerous filtering is far less of a temptation. In fact, we’ll go so far as to say the SR is the only bike that has managed to make city riding genuinley enjoyable. Not having a clutch or gears to worry

Vespa - looks like a scooter but is actually a motorcycle marissa baecker

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

“You did what?” “I bought a Vespa.” “A Vespa? Isn’t that a scooter?” A Vespa – Italian for Wasp – looks like a scooter but depending on the power, it is classified as a motorcycle and I managed to find a 2006 GranTurismo 200. If you want brand new, Piaggio just released the latest version with a power boost – GTS300. So why would I, a seasoned motorcyclist, who has ridden just about every style, size and type of motorcycle on the road today, buy a Vespa? My answer – why not? It is fun. It’s stylish and Vespa is not only a ride but a culture. Rewind to the ‘80s where groups likes Mods were easily identified by not only their wardrobe but their Vespas. Rewind a bit further, or

rediscover it today, The Who’s Quadrophenia – British rock opera where Vespa was the ride. Since then, there are Vespa clubs in pretty much every major city around the globe. Who doesn’t want to boot about town with a smile on their face? I, for one, am on the move a lot. I don’t see the need for yet another single occupant vehicle clogging up traffic. Let me tell you, sitting in traffic on my Vespa in the sun with the wind in my hair is a whole lot easier than sitting in traffic in my car. At least I feel like I am outdoors. The environmental awareness of today’s cities is resulting is less vehicle parking and more two-wheeled parking. Bicycles are now offering a bit a boost adding an electric motor with enough power to get you up a hill with minimal effort. Other electric twowheelers look just like scooters. That is

where is gets confusing. Scooters may all share a similar look but they are far from similar in power and that makes it tricky for driving public to decipher which ones are which. In British Columbia for example, the technical reference for the electric low powered two-wheeler is “Motor Assisted Cycle.” The MAC comes in many shapes, and tends not to conform to the usual rules of the road. It

moves smooth like a vehicle, but hugs the curb, bike lane and sometimes you see them on the sidewalk. They even occasionally dart into to traffic. Riders are usually wearing a bicycle helmet, as DOT is not mandatory, but I have seen a few without helmets at all. These two-wheeled rides do not require any special license but an education in common sense for both the riders and the drivers wouldn’t hurt anyone.

15 – The Motorcycle Times, October 2017

If you live in Ontario however, it is referred to as a “Motor-assisted bicycle” but Ontario laws are different. Rules of the road still apply. If your moped can travel at a speed of 50km/h on level ground within a 2 km stretch, you need a motorcycle licence applicable to the category of two-wheels you are operating and a plate. So vehicle drivers beware. If you are about to pull out from a side street in front a scooter – think twice. Just because you see a “scooter” does not mean it is travelling at a lesser rate of speed than normal traffic. It could be coming at you the same speed as a car and if you pull out in front of it, it will be in your rear view before you look up. Vespa kicked off in 1946 to an exclusive audience in Rome, Italy. It has undergone many shape modifications, added a sidecar in 1955, became a helicopter in 1967 for the movie “Dick Smart, Agent 2007”. From that point on, the Vespa would get a power boost and by 2006 become the first scooter to reach 60mph. But, there is a big difference between my cultural icon and the BC MAC or ONT MAB. My Wasp has a sting. This scooter is no slouch. Its looks may deceive you but for the record, it is a motorcycle. It’s a motorcycle in disguise maybe, but a motorcycle none-the-less. It requires a motorcycle licence to operate. Riders must wear a DOT approved helmet and you won’t see me riding curbside. I will take my place in traffic like any other motorcycle and may travel a highway if necessary – just because I can. The only operational aspect that requires some getting used to is the automatic transmission and having two brake levers at the handle bars and no clutch. Open throttle and go. My 2006 GranTurismo is powered by 200cc, 4-stroke, gas engine. Top speed is listed at 120 km/h but even at 110 km/hr, it is still a smooth ride. Noteable with the 2006 is a front-end lowspeed wobble between 30 and 50 km. It is synonymous to uneven pavement or unbalanced tires. A bit of research indicates it is a common experience in that model year with the GT. Aside from that, the GT has everything I need. The rear trunk holds a full face helmet or my bag of groceries from the quick trip to the grocery store. It also holds my laptop bag and a camera and is lockable. Additional helmet or otherwise storage is available under the seat in a removable tub. Take the tub out and you have easy access to the engine for maintenance. The instrument panel is basic offering speedometer, odometer, signal lights, digital clock, engine temp, fuel guage and low fuel light. The best part – I filled up my 9.5 litre fuel tank for $9.14. If we do the math, fuel consumption is 4.4 litres per 100 km – so roughly 200 km of commuting for about ten bucks. Good choice now that I really think about it. Savings all around. So much fun just to putt aound on too, Bonus!

Part of preparing for the safety course is having all the necessary gear. I needed a jacket of sorts and since I don’t know anyone my size who has a spare, so I went shopping the night before my course. My intent was to buy a jacket that will serve a few purposes (in case I don’t like two-wheeling) – it was a recipe for disaster. First I bought a jean jacket but what I really wanted was a leather jacket, you know, so I look cool. I found a leather store and the sign said 70% off, thats the place for me. While trying on several jackets, I was imagining riding on the open road and feeling the wind on my face. I found the perfect jacket that looked really good on me and would do the trick for the course, so I bought it. It was a great deal too. The jacket looks like a motorcycle jacket and the leather was as soft as a cloud, it was perfect. After all that is where you buy your leather motorcycle jacket - in the store that sells leather stuff – right? Wrong! So here is how my correct purchase of a motorcycle riding jacket went. I asked few people what kind of jacket to buy (after buying 2 on my own) and I got an interesting answer. What bike do you have? I said none yet but I want to buy gear first. Answer was, well you need to pick what style of bike are you going to ride and then buy the right gear. At that time I wanted to buy a cruiser. So I started looking through cruiser jackets, thanks to my indecisiveness I didn’t pick anything. That was a blessing in disguise. A few months later I purchased an adventure bike, but that is a story for another time. Armed with bike, now I knew what kind of jacket I needed to purchase. I did it right this time – third times a charm. I went to a store that specifically sells motorcycle gear and oh was there lots to choose from. I told the sales person that I needed a jacket that suited my ride. She asked me some questions and based on my answers, she laid out several options. After initially leaning towards leather, I picked a multi-layer textile jacket. I didn’t know it at the time but it was the best decision. Now, we are coming to the end of riding season and I am very pleased with my third and final purchase. I was able to ride in the spring without feeling any cold. By striping the insulation layer, I had a confortable ride during the summer. And when I experienced my first rainy ride – water proof layer kept me dry. Here are some things to think about when purchasing your riding jacket. Pockets - I now love pockets. I have two large front cargo pockets, another one inside and a big pouch at the

back. As a new rider I was not thinking that much about pockets, but they are essential since storage on a motorcycle is at premium. Something I hadn’t thought about with my first two purchases. Now I have a place for all the things I need while riding. My phone, charger pack, and a multitude of other things. So think about the storage before you make a purchase. Air vents - My jacket has air vents on the sleeves and chest with Velcro flaps and zippers, and one below the collar at the back. Easy to open and close, you can adjust how much air flow you want or don’t want. I love it! On a hot day I will have the jacket only and all vents fully open. Towards the end of the day I will start closing them up. I also have a waterproof insert in my back pouch. That one serves dual purpose. Obviously, one is if I end up in the rain it will keep me dry and other is in the colder evenings I can put it as another layer. I used this combination a lot and every time I was thanking the heavens that I bought this jacket. Looks - I was initially set on having a black jacket (wanting to look cool and match my ride) but I ended up with a white jacket. My bike is black having a white jacket with black details looks nice and gives contrast and added visibility. And yes, you want to be seen out there! Reflective details are good feature too. While aiming for cool, aim for visibly cool! Keep in mind that lighter colours are more work to take care of. Darker colours tend to hide the bug guts and road grim but being seen is very important day or night. Layers - My jacket has three layers. The jacket itself, a layer for rain and a thicker thermal layer. I must admit that I was initially reluctant to buy i, thinking it was overkill. But after a few months of riding I am so glad that I did. Being a new rider you don’t know how frequently you will ride, how long, how early or late in the season either. Having a jacket that gives you the versatility of weather and temperature variations no matter what riding style you adopt is important. Inserts and safety features - Safety is a paramount when buying motorcycle gear. You don’t want to test your safety gear but incase the need arises you want to know that you have the best possible stuff around you. Durability of the shell is as important as inserts that protect spine, elbows, forearms and shoulders. Make sure it has reflective areas, but again that depends on the bike you ride. Lessons learned - Buy from a store that specifically sells motorcycle gear. Make sure of a proper fit. Don’t sacrifice quality just to save a few bucks. Buy for functionality, durability and safety, looks are not important.

The fact that most of the safety features are hidden was one of the reasons that we called this shoe the “Zeros”. When it comes to develop-

ing our product, we made Zero compromises. Finally, total freedom! You don’t have to choose between safety and comfort anymore. We feel you should be able to be free of constraints when it comes to motorcycle footwear. The Zeros are a high top shoe that blurs the lines between performance and casual wear. These lightweight shoes are de-

signed for all-day riding, comfort, and performance without cutting corners. The longer you ride, the more you realize the importance of motorcycle gear. Certainly our helmets, jackets, boots and gloves have become far more than just safety gear, but a part of our motorcycle lifestyle. Why does

motorcycle gear have to be inconvenient and unstylish? The ROAME Zeros are here to redefine what motorcycle safety should look like. With the ROAME Zeros we wanted to create a shoe that would offer motorcycle safety while complementing your lifestyle. Remember, it’s not if you’ll crash but when. If you ride long enough, you will go down. You need make sure you’re wearing the right gear to protect yourself when this happens. First, add our small box to your motorcycle’s existing turn signal/brake light system, then pair the shoes with this box. Once the shoes have been paired with this transmitter box, all you have to do is get on your bike and start riding. ROAME takes care of the rest. It’s hard hard to see motorcycles because they have less mass than 4 wheel vehicles and therefore have a smaller road presence. Drivers notice an absence of cars, not the presence of a motorcycle. Motorcycles are roughly 1/6th the size of a 4-door sedan. That translates to a significant reduction in visibility. Check them out on kickstarter.

Upsets at final RACE DoubleHeader weekend The entire landscape of the R.A.C.E. SuperSeries championships changed last weekend at Shannonville Motorsport Park. In one split second, with one tiny mistake, the entire season and the hunt for another #1 plate was lost to Royal Distributing sponsored Michael Leon. While leading the Open Sprint contest earlier in the day, Leon lost an edge and tumbled heavily off track in corner 3, sending the reigning champion to the hospital. While Leon sat in the emergency department, his championship dreams came to an end, as did his chance to race and try to recapture the series Pro Superbike championship. In Pro Superbike action, Kingston’s Jeff Williams looked to take over the points lead from the absent Leon, with Eli Daccache and Jim Proulx in tow, however, the advantage was short lived when Williams pulled off track, handing the chase to old rivals Daccache and Proulx. Proulx didn’t have much time to enjoy his newfound status of race leader when he lost the front of this Yamaha R1, tumbling heavily into the front wall, almost swallowing up Daccache who had been hard on his rear wheel. Daccache somehow managed to stay upright and shot into the race lead uncontested. With the win, Daccache now held a rm grip on the Pro Superbike title. Sunday’s nals saw Daccache seal the deal with a second place nish behind Kingston’s “Jammin” Jeff Williams. Williams proudly hoisted the checkered ag in what turns out is his rst Pro Feature race win since 1996 but fell to second place in points, making Daccache the Pro Superbike class winner. This would be the rst of two number one plates earned on the weekend by the brilliant Newcastle racer. On Saturday, Eli Daccache left no doubt in the Pro 600 contest, leading from start to nish and virtually locking up the championship, with Sunday’s race nal yet to run. Stacey Nesbitt had a great outing, with a hard push from fth all the way up to second, after a race long battle with Belleville rider Mike Raniowski, who had to settle for the nal step of the podium. Sundays nal run to the nish was a lonelier affair for Daccache, who led from start to nish, to also sew up the Pro 600 class

number one plate. Things certainly tightened up in the Amateur Superbike ranks after Saturdays nal. Race winner Michael van Ek took the race win but Vivian Mathews held on to nish third in the race and maintain his class lead status. Cameron Walker had a good ride to take the second step of the podium and climb up into third place in the standings before Sundays nal. Ivan Babic had an impressive ride nishing in fourth, just ahead of rookie Eros Mukja. On Sunday, Michael van Ek took another race win, dragging along Ivan Babic for second place. Belleville’s Eros Mukja took the nal step of the podium. Vivian Mathews rode to a smart fourth place nish with enough points to take the over-all Championship. In Amateur 600 racing, Hastings rider Leo Foley maintained a tenuous lead in the series, nishing in second place for the day, behind Cameron Walker who upped his game and gained some valuable points with the race win. Second in points Sean Latta lost a little ground with a fourth place nish with Michael van Ek earning the nal step of the podium. Only 10 points separate the top three riders heading into Sunday. Cameron Walker did what he had to do on Sunday with the race win, just ahead of Michael van Ek and Sean Latta, but a brilliant ride for fourth but young Hasting’s racer Leo Foley took the Championship with a fourth place nish. In the Mopar Express Lane Lightweight Production battle, over 20 riders took to the eld for the nal race of a very long series. The small bike series continues to heat up to be on full display in next season Mopar CSBK National road race series, as the Amateur Lightweight Sport Bike class. The weekend was a very successful outing for the young racer from Blackstock, ON, Jake Leclair who jumped into the series lead on Saturday with a runaway race win. For Sunday’s nal, LeClair and Connor Campbell were given a set of Dunlop’s new Sportmax Q3 tires to test out and they both made good use of them. LeClair was rst across the nish line with Campbell in tow, giving LeClair the series Championship.

Rossi fifth as Marquez wins Aragon GP MADRID (Reuters) - Defending champion Marc Marquez won the Aragon MotoGP on Sunday to take a 16-point lead in the world championship standings. It was an all Spanish podium, as Honda team mate Dani Pedrosa was second and Jorge Lorenzo third for Ducati. Italian Valentino Rossi, making a remarkable comeback barely three weeks after suffering a broken leg, nished fth on his Yamaha after lying second earlier on. Team mate Maverick Vinales of Spain, who started on pole, was fourth and compatriot Aleix Espargaro of Aprilia sixth. Briton Cal Crutchlow was in contention for a top-six place but crashed and had to retire on lap 17. Marquez started the race in fth position after crashing in qualifying and had a slow start but quickly gained on his rivals, taking the lead from Lorenzo in the 16th lap and charging to his fth title of the season.

“It was a difcult race. At the beginning I didn’t have the feeling. I tried to come back with the feeling but even in the last part of the race I didn’t feel great. I struggled more than other years here. But it’s great,” Marquez said. Lorenzo came close to claiming his rst win of the season but faded as the race entered the nal stages. “It’s a pity to lose the victory by not so much. In the last 10 laps we needed more grip in the rear. With the medium of Dani and the hard of Marc I couldn’t follow them. Anyway, I‘m happy with this 3rd position,” Lorenzo told reporters. By winning with four rounds remaining Marquez was able to take a clear lead in the standings as Andrea Dovizioso, previously the joint leader, managed only seventh place. Marquez, who also won in San Marino two weeks ago, now has 224 points, Dovizioso 208 and Vinales 196. The next race is the Japan Grand Prix in Motegi on Oct. 15.

Dunlop and Pro6 Announce New Tires for Mopar CSBK in 2018 In preparation for updates with the various spec tire options at Mopar CSBK National events in 2018, Dunlop ofcial supplier Pro6 will be testing some new rubber this weekend at Shannonville Motorsport Park, ON. During the nal round of the RACE Super Series, September 2224, Canadian racers will get their rst look at new tires specically designed for the Lightweight and Middleweight race categories. With Amateur Lightweight Sport Bike conrmed as a new category at Canadian National rounds in 2018, Dunlop have announced a new spec tire for the class, the Q3 Plus. Designed for small displacement, production-based racers, the Sportmax Q3 Plus made its debut in the KTM RC Cup races at the nal two MotoAmerica rounds of 2017, earlier this month at New Jersey and Barber Motorsports Park, Alabama. As with all the other Dunlop tires used by all the classes on the CSBK tour, the

new Sportmax Q3 Plus is built just across the border from Canada in Buffalo, New York. Compared to the tire used in the 2015-2017 Canadian Kawasaki Ninja 300 spec series, the new Sportmax Q3 Plus has a updated prole, new compound and new tread pattern. When the tire was launched at New Jersey, lightweight class competitors dropped their lap times by almost two seconds, with the pace at the front of the Lightweight race shortening the total time of the race by thirty seconds – a substantial improvement. Racer feed back was also universally positive – competitors like the improvement in turn-in, edge grip, and feel – saying the new Q3 Plus was an improvement in all areas, with no loss in durability MotoAmerica also switched to a new tire for middleweight riders mid-season this year, and the latest version of the successful KR451 made its Canadian debut.

Tipping the scales:

Marquez stamps his authority on Aragon

Fifth win of the year makes it advantage 93, with Rossi taking a top ve despite injury – and Lorenzo on the podium Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) took win number ve of the season on home turf at MotorLand Aragon, picking off his rivals on the way to the front to make some serious gains as key contenders Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) and Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) nished off the podium. Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) sliced through to second, and Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team) made it a Spanish trio on the podium at home as he led from the front before eventually crossing the line in third - his second podium in red. Lorenzo took the holeshot from pole, shooting away into the lead and leaving Viñales to head the chasing group before teammate Valentino Rossi struck and set off after the Ducati in the lead. With the number 25 heading wide soon after, that let both Dovizioso and Marquez move past – and the front four were able to pull away. Viñales was at the head of the second group and stalked by Pedrosa as Rossi was able to close in on the Ducati in the lead. As it remained impossible to call, Marquez attacked the ‘Doctor’ and headed too deep – even cutting up the inside of Lorenzo as he briey shot into P1 and then into the run off. But the number 93 recovered quickly and made the move stick on the number 46 at the nal corner, then able to duel past Lorenzo to take the lead and his fth win of the year. Pedrosa had taken Viñales at Turn 1 and was able to reel in Rossi and then Lorenzo with some signature stunning pace despite his second row start, with the Movistar Yamaha duo then left to ght it out for fourth. Hard racing didn’t give away a recently broken leg for Rossi, but Viñales was able to push his way past and at least limit the damage in the standings. Just behind Rossi over the line, the ght for sixth was won by Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) at the venue where he took his rst premier class podium, as the Spaniard impressively held off Dovizioso in the latter stages – who in turn defended seventh from Alvaro Bautista (Pull&Bear Aspar Team) after struggling more in the latter stages of the race. Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) took ninth after a more difcult weekend including a trip through Q1, ahead of Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) completing the top ten for the Austrian factory – making steady progress for another impressive result. Impressive was also an adjective for the man behind him, wildcard and teammate Mika Kallio, who took P11 after going straight through to Q2 on Saturday. Motegi changed everything in 2016. Now the paddock returns to the Japanese venue after a very different season - but it’s Marquez ahead once again. With four races to go, however, it’s anyone’s game.

Fresh Prince of Belfountain emin smajic be tested on 400 series highways so I

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

In my early motorcycling days I was as local as local can be. Going up and down one street that is just two minutes from my home, and that was alright. Not many people said that initially, but I remember when one of the experienced riders opened up about his humble beginnings. Early mornings on parking lot and evenings on deserted streets. Making left and right turns. Trying to go as slow as you can while keeping your balance. Starting and stopping. That meant a-lot to me. I was not the only one starting out with a simple routine and build up from there. There is no rushing and no shame in basic practice, because that is how you build your skills, confidence and live to ride another day. But what if you want to experience longer rides and distant vistas but you’re not ready to ride hundreds of kilometres just to reach it. Good news is you don’t have to go far or even hit any 400 series highways to enjoy great ride. My first long milestone was Belfountain. I heard a lot about this place from other riders. Gathering place, nice roads picturesque views, twisties and the smell of the forest... it sounded like a dream. Belfountain is a Hamlet on the Forks of the Credit Road with a long history and great character, surrounded by scenic roads that are great for riding. Located just below Orangeville, It’s around 50 klm from Mississauga and just over 70 from Toronto. Since this was my first “long” journey I prepared my gear, stuffed my pockets and did all the usual checks on the bike and than another just to be sure. My riding skills were not ready to

planned my route to avoid them. From Mississauga it’s actually very straight forward. Just take Mississauga Road and go north. To make it really “long” I started from the begining of Mississauga Road at Lakeshore. After a couple of minutes you start climbing to the top of the hill that ends up with a series of nice twisties towards Dundas Street (I did explore this part a few times before). After crossing Burnamthrope street your voyage begins. First you go through Streetsville but since since I started there, no need to stop. If you want to, there are coffee shops, restaurants and a stretch of shops around the town square. Than comes Huttonville (west of Brampton). Keep riding and soon you will hit a stretch of straight road with speed limit of 80klm. The surrounding area is nice and serene and you can enjoy a little faster ride than on city streets but still in your comfort zone, way below highway speeds. For me that was what I was looking for. You need to slowly build your confidence and skill level for highway speeds. On county roads I felt no pressure and was able to focus on my skills learned and the road way better than on busy city streets. Nice patch to feel your motorcycle and appreciate the open road. When you get to King street your scenic adventure begins. Since that was my first time out of the city, my helmet strap was keeping my jaw from dropping. It looked amazing; trees, curves, hills, smells – beauty. And all that on a motorcycle! I was reliving these moments even a few days after and that makes for a rich and memorable experience – if you have never visited, you’re really missing out.

Nice summer breeze was just gentle enough to cool you down but no actual wind to shake your head and ruin the ride. Great thing about riding is that you can see it, smell it, hear it and feel it way better than in the car. Fresh air, smell of pine and flowers on a crystal clear day with bright blue sky – you could not ask for a better riding weather. The road is getting interesting with gentle ups, downs and some curves. Kilometres quickly pass and Mississauga Road leads to the centre of Belfountain. I still remember what a great feeling of accomplishment that was when I pulled over in the coffee shop parking lot and parked my bike with other motorcycles. I felt so alive! The coffee shop is where motorcycle enthusiasts gathering in Belfountain. You can grab a coffee, something to eat, take it outside then you can chat with fellow riders gathered around their motorcycles. You can always hear a good story or learn something new. After a short break the actual fun ride begins. From the parking lot make a right turn and after first curve you are on the Forks Of The Credit Road. With a bold entrance to high mountain looking vistas, I was so happy that I experienced this on a motorcycle – that was beyond words! You can also explore other roads. After riding around the area a few times, I stopped back at a coffee place for a refreshment and to see other riders. In this setting time flies so fast. I was planning a short stop but I stayed over an hour. Great time, great people and great coffee. Now I was ready for my ride back. Armed with a milestone achievement in my early riding career I confidently kick ed my bike in to first gear and merged

on to Mississauga Road heading south. Same road back felt even better. Fresh air and that feeling that you don’t want it to end... just more winding roads and beautiful scenery. I’m almost home, back to the outskirts of urban areas, familiar establishments, people, cars... wow I miss the serenity already. It felt great and I was so happy that I don’t need to go that far to experience a great ride in nature. I just discovered my go to place, everyone has one. You will find yours too. Many happy roads to explore. Next time I will explore more and started with going to the end of Mississauga Road. There is something about knowing that you followed one street beginning to end. When I grow up I would like to tackle the longest (or not so any more) street on the world like our fellow rider and writer). End is so diffrent form the beginning for Mississauga Road. It starts with multi-million dollar houses and ends with acres of nature and gravel. I have an adventure bike and that little adventure actually made my day. But you don’t need an adventure bike to have an adeventure. One thing to mention, by stating the obvious, gravel is way different than pavement and can get quite slippery if you don’t adjust your speed. Ride with caution or skip this part if you or your bike are not ready for it. There will always be an opportunity to try that later if you really want to experience it. On my way back I made a short trip to town of Erin and concluded my ride by going back using Hurontario Street (HW10) all the way to the centre of Mississauga. A noobie riders Bliss!
