Motorcycles rev up envy
The third annual Thunder by the Lake motorcycle show drew people down to Red River Road in Thunder Bay to look at the more than 70 bikes on display on Saturday. The Thunder by the Lake motorcycle show on Saturday left reality TV star Mike Henry feeling a little green. “There are a lot of bikes here that make me jealous,” said Henry, better known as Horny Mike from the History channel’s Counting Cars. “I don’t have these yet,” said Henry. “I thought getting on TV, I was just going to have all this cool stuff all of a sudden. Looks like you’ve got to work just as hard even on TV to get this cool stuff.” Counting Cars is a spinoff of the popular series Pawn Stars and focuses on the automobile restoration business Count’s Kustoms, where Henry showcases his skills as an airbrush artist. On Saturday he was greeting fans, signing autographs and checking out the motorcycles at the third annual motorcycle show on Red River Road between Court and Cumberland streets in Thunder Bay. The shows are run in conjunction with Ribfest. Henry said it didn’t take much enticing for him to come out. “Ribs, cars, bikes, hanging out, drinking? Done,” he said. “There is no other reason to come out.” Henry had his eye on a couple of the baggers - touring bikes - and said he just bought one himself. “They’re nicer than my bagger so I’m kind of irritated with them at the same time,” he said. “I’m jealous. I have envy.” He also said he felt lucky to be in Thunder Bay. Five years ago no one knew who he was. “It’s nice to be able to come this far and do this much,” he said. “I get to meet people I never thought I’d get to meet.” All the proceeds go to Our Kids Count. Trevisanutto said “I’ll tell you for capita, we’ve got some of the nicest bikes you’ll see anywhere,” he said. “The guys and gals are passionate. There are some women here who have been building their own bikes and they’re unbelievable. I would challenge anybody to outdo them.”

3 New CVO Motorcycles for 2016
With the announcement Harley-Davidson it will feature the larger Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110 engine on the new S series of motorcycles, bikers who enjoy the offerings of the manufacturers ‘Custom Vehicle Operations’ (CVO) group may wonder how they can stay above the riding crowd. Harley-Davidson CVO motorcycles are engineered and customized using exclusive components and paint treatments combined with numerous items from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories. The CVO program is used to introduce new technolo-
gies, custom components and paint and graphic techniques before they are offered as original equipment or accessories. Bold paint, potent power and exclusive prestige soar to even higher levels in 2016 as Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) presents its latest collection of three limited-production factory-custom motorcycles, each a hand-crafted masterpiece intended to push the boundaries of luxury, performance and technology. Loaded for the long-haul aficionado, the 2016 CVO Limited model features an all-
new paint scheme and new tank badges. Offering outstanding aerodynamics for rider and passenger, the 2016 CVO Road Glide Ultra motorcycle is available in three new paint color combinations with revised comfort and technical features. According to Harley-Davidson, the sonic capability of the 2016 CVO Street Glide model is matched only by its mind-blowing performance on the street, and the ultimate hot-rod bagger is back with four outrageous new color options. “Each year we work CONTINUED ON P.03

3 New CVO for 2016 to make the new CVO motorcycles even more exclusive with content not available on a regular-production Harley-Davidson, along with an extreme level of attention to detail in design and finish,” said Brian Nelson, Harley-Davidson Principal Stylist. “The goal is to create motorcycles that are visually exciting and thrilling to ride. Some CVO bikes make a wild statement, others express premium exclusivity, but they are all special motorcycles.” Three new technical features debut on each of the 2016 CVO model motorcycles: A Tire Pressure Monitoring System integrated into the valve stem on each wheel functions to monitor front and rear tire pressures and to provide a warning of lower-than-optimal pressure. Tire pressure can be viewed anytime through the odometer or the info screen of the infotainment system. The warning alert is displayed on the BOOM! Box infotainment system. A new integrated key fob combines the functions of the electric luggage locking system and the proximity-activated security system, conveniently replacing two previous fobs with a single device. New LED turn signals combine modern style and long bulb life with increased light intensity for enhanced conspicuity. The 2016 CVO Limited, CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide Ultra are exclusively powered by the Screamin’ Eagle Twin-Cooled Twin Cam 110 engine with a combination of air-cooled and precision liquid-cooling strategies to maintain peak performance under the most demanding

loads and riding conditions. All models are equipped with the Assist & Slip Clutch Pack that provides a slip feature on downshifts to reduce loading of the driveline, and hydraulic clutch actuation to reduce lever effort and maintenance. Similarly, all Harley-Davidson CVO models are factory-equipped with electronic cruise control, Reflex Linked Brakes with ABS, keyless ignition and the H-D Factory Security System, and an indoor/outdoor storage cover with the CVO logo. We threw out a lot of gadgets in that paragraph, so let’s look a little closer at each one. Electronic cruise control should be something every rider has heard of and mostly likely enjoyed in their own bike. Reflex Linked Brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) on the other hand might sound new to some. Its two must-have technologies in one great safety device. ABS turns a locked-up front wheel or a rear wheel skid into a relic from riding’s history. Furthermore, with this option, the front and rear brakes are electronically linked to provide exactly the right amount of brake to each tire no matter what the road condition is. The H-D Factory Security System is a feature riders will wonder how they ever walked away from a parked motorcycle without it. The factory-installed next-generation security system features a hands-free fob that automatically arms and disarms the vehicle’s electronic security functions as the owner approaches and walks away from the bike. Riders simply need to keep the fob on their ignition key ring and let it do all the work. New for 2016, a narrow-profile primary cover and derby cover on all three models improves rider leg clearance, allowing many riders a more firm-footed stance on the ground. The 2016 CVO Limited offers the ultimate in refined touring luxury, appearing

in a new paint scheme that flows from front to rear and incorporates new tank badges. New styling details include a color-matched split stream vent in the batwing fairing, replacing the previous black vent. A new color-matched bezel for the wraparound lighting on the Tour-Pak luggage replaces the previous black bezel. A new super-premium cover material for the rider and passenger seating surfaces combines vinyl and perforated leather for improved comfort. Refined by Project Rushmore, the CVO Limited is equipped with Daymaker LED lighting, Reflex Linked Brakes with ABS, and the color touchscreen BOOM! Box 6.5 GT infotainment system with 3D GPS and 6.5-inch BOOM! Bagger speakers with 75-watt-per-channel amplification. The Airflow Collection combines black rubber and brilliant chrome highlights on heated hand grips, the brake pedal pad and
shifter peg and rider and passenger floorboards. Premium removable luggage liners, back-lit hand control and dash switches and a high-output charging system are also standard equipment. The CVO Limited rolls on polished-chrome Slicer custom wheels. The new paint scheme is offered in three color combinations: Palladium Silver/Phantom Blue, Carbon Dust/Electric Red Pearl, and Charcoal Slate/Palladium Silver. Another product from the limited-production factory is the 2016 CVO Road Glide Ultra. Wind-tunnel tested to deliver outstanding aerodynamic performance for rider and passenger, the distinctive frame-mounted, shark-nose fairing of the CVO Road Glide Ultra motorcycle features triple split stream vents and a 13.5-inch touring windshield to virtually eliminate head buffeting. The Ten Minute Job I don’t know how it is with you but it seems to me that when ever someone tells me it’s a quick fix or just a ten minute job, the hair on the back of my neck begins to stand on end and a shiver runs down the length of my spine effectively rendering me paralyzed for a moment or two. No job I have ever tackled has ever been easy or quick. Maybe its the fact that as I get older, I have less and less patience, not in a crotchety kind of way but more like a distaste for things that will end up wasting my time and causing me more grief and stress than any one person should have to endure. Let me explain…A few months ago, I was waiting for a buddy to come by so we could go for a ride. As I was waiting with my gear at the ready and my bike already sufficiently warmed up, I got a text saying he’d be delayed a bit as he was going to quickly remove the baffles from his exhaust (essentially two small bolts hold the baffles in place inside the mufflers). About an hour later, I get a follow up text stating that he was having an issue with one of the baffles, it was a little stuck and he just needs to persuade it a little more. Another hour later and I get another text, If you wanna go ahead, I may be a little longer than expected. I’m not one for leaving a buddy in trouble so I headed over only to find his exhaust was in pieces all over the garage. We tried everything to get that baffle out, it wasn’t moving at all. We some how managed to jam it even farther back into the muffler. It became apparent we weren’t going riding. He decided to send the muffler out to a few
professionals who gave it their all only to end up defeated as well. The baffle is still stuck inside the muffler and I don’t expect it will ever come loose. So, as fate would have it, the bike I currently ride has very loud exhaust and it sometimes causes me pounding headaches. The only real solution is to change the baffles with a fiberglass wrapped version called a quiet baffle. Which I ordered about a month prior and has been sitting in the garage unopened just waiting to be installed. About a month goes by and my wife is tiding up the garage and decides to open the box and says “honey isn’t there supposed to be two of these.” Are you kidding me – not in those exact words as I recall reverberated throughout the garage. Turns out the vendor I purchased the baffles through sell them individually. That would have been useful information when I ordered what I thought was a pair. So I ordered a second one, that came a few days later. My wife set the unopened box in the garage along with the first one. I had put off doing this installation, after witnessing all the troubles experienced by my riding buddy with his removal attempts. it was finally time, one evening after work, I finished supper and told my wife I was heading to the garage to change out my baffles, I assured her that it would be a quick job and we’d watch a movie once I was done. Off come the exhaust tips, then undo the heat shield hose clamps and off come the heat shields with a little persuasion and a few cuss words. Ok, now the two small set screws that hold the baffles in and Bob’s your uncle. Sounds simple enough, right! I find the cor-
rect size allen wrench and out comes the top set screw, I insert the wrench into the bottom screw and it turns and turns without the budging. Maybe they are different sizes? Nope the first one was right, just that whoever installed the exhaust, did me the favour of rounding out the hex head on the screw. Thank you very much! – not in those exact words as I recall bellowed out of my mouth loud enough for my wife to hear from within the house. She pops her head out to see if she could offer some help. I explain my findings and she suggests I grind off the head. Great idea, except that now I have to remove the entire exhaust to grind the little b$&%@#d off. An hour later, after much persuasion and a few more cuss words, the exhaust is off, and the screw head has been ground down. With a little more persuasion both baffles are out. I asked my wife to get the boxes containing the quiet baffles. She removes the baffles from the boxes and say’s “honey these look fatter than the one’s you just took out.” “Can’t be”, I said “it’s just the fibreglass wrapping that makes them look that way, let me see.” The baffles I ordered were for a very specific exhaust pipe and style. I checked and double checked to make sure I was ordering the correct ones. “Son of a b&%$#t” turns out my exhaust has a diameter of 1¾ inches but not the baffles I ordered, they are an even 2 inches. So, that ten minute job just took me two hours, only to find out I have to put it all back together without any changes made whatsoever. Exactly the same as I started with. (Insert cuss words here). Now my head is pounding even wosre than before.

Erik Buell Racing Assets Sold to NJ’s Atlantic Metals Group April 15 is the dreaded tax day for most, but for Erik Buell, this date is even more dreadful. Erik Buell Racing ceased operations on April 15, 2015, and filed for Chapter 128 Protection under a Wisconsin statute that has characteristics of both bankruptcy and debt consolidation. EBR, which was based out of East Troy, Wis., was funded by the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp., and Erik Buell himself. The Indian Hero MotoCorp paid Buell $25 million for 49 percent of the company. Last month, rumors began that Hero would purchase 100 percent of Erik Buell Racing, and offer Erik full time. But these were just that – rumors. Things changed this week, though, when Erik Buell Racing was acquired by the New Jersey-Atlantic Metals Group LLC when EBR’s assets were sold at auction. Not surprisingly, Hero MotoCorp is also involved, and will take care of consulting services as Atlantic assumes all operations. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that EBR sold for $2.25 million, which includes all motorcycle and parts inventory, machinery, tooling, and intangible assets such as trademarks and designs completed on future EBR products. Milwaukee court records say EBR has $20.8 million in assets, and $20.4 million in liabilities, the latter including everything that’s owed to former employees and other companies. At the moment it is unclear of how much of these assets and liabilities will be assumed by Atlantic and Hero.
Atlantic owner Bruce Belfer will serve as CEO, and Erik Buell will remain as president. For now, all operations are set for New Jersey, and its unknown if any of the former 126 EBR employees will join the new team. This signifies Act 3 of the Erik Buell saga – first with Harley-Davidson, then on his own with future backing by Hero MotoCorp, and now owned by the East Coast company Atlantic Metals Group LLC. Erik Buell – ex-Harley-Davidson engineer – began creating motorcycles in 1983. Harley purchased 49 percent of the company in 1993, and in 2003 “Buell” became a subsidiary of The Motor Company. But after nearly 137,000 Buell motorcycles sold to mostly a cult-following, Harley dropped Buell in October 2009. From there, Erik Buell lost the rights to his own name, and began EBR (Erik Buell Racing). Its first bike was a race-only 1125R. After some wheeling and dealing, Erik Buell purchased some V-twin engines and tooling from Rotax, and soon the street-going 1190RX arrived. In need of some financial help, Erik sold 49 percent of the company in the summer of 2013 to the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp, for $25 million. Soon EBR had entered World Superbike – the first American manufacturer to enter the series – but due to financial stress, the company ceased operations April 15, 2015. And now the EBR purchase by Atlantic, with consulting by Hero MotoCorp.
Harley-Davidson Crowns First U.S. Custom King The king has been crowned. Alex Stewart, of Yellowstone Harley-Davidson® in Belgrade, Mont. earned bragging rights and a new motorcycle-customization royalty designation – the first-ever U.S. Custom King. Stewart and his dealership’s build team assembled the winning “Next Generation Board Track Racer” as part of the inaugural Harley-Davidson Custom Kings competition. Customization is one of the unique ways riders celebrate their individuality. The U.S. Custom Kings competition focused on redefining performance through the customization expertise and ingenuity of Harley-Davidson dealers throughout the country, using the Street 750 motorcycle as the perfect canvas. Nearly 100 U.S. dealerships entered the bike build-off battle featuring the HarleyDavidson Street® 750 motorcycle. The entries from finalists in each of the country’s seven markets, were voted on by their peers at the company’s recent annual deal-
er meeting. The six finalists vying with Stewart for the title and customization supremacy were: Nick Celenza, Brian’s Harley-Davidson, Langhorne, Pa. Brett Sassaman, Harley-Davidson of Macon, Macon, Ga. Jeff Musat, Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale, Scottsdale, Ariz. Kevin Winters, Lake Shore Harley-Davidson, Libertyville, Ill. Doug O’Neal, Loess Hills Harley-Davidson, Pacific Junction, Iowa Bruce Downs, Ray Price Harley-Davidson, Raleigh, N.C. Yellowstone Harley-Davidson’s winning Street™ 750 makes its first public appearance in Milwaukee at Custom Bike Show Weekend Sept. 5-6 at the HarleyDavidson Museum. The motorcycle, which drew inspiration from the board track racers from the 1920s and 1930s, will then move inside the Museum main lobby where it will be on display.
Manufacturer fined $2.9m for recall failure over Street Triple/Street Triple R
Triumph has been fined $2.9 million for failing to issue a safety recall in a timely manner and over failure to report on the company’s progress in correcting issues pertaining to the same, it has been announced. The fine follows a recall in September 2014 on 1,368 ABS-equipped 2012/13 Street Triple and Street Triple R models pertaining to loose bolts, which could effectively hamper steering movement. The same recall was issued in the UK in June of the previous year - 15 months prior to the US arm of the company taking action.
An initial $1.4 million penalty has now been imposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with an additional $500,000 fine thrown in for good measure in order to enable Triumph to meet a series of requirements said to be necessary in order to improve the company’s safety processes. The remaining $1 million is set to be levied should Triumph fail to make improvements or if further violations are found. An investigation launched by the NHTSA in April this year, to determine if the re-
call delay was a violation of the Safety Act, subsequently uncovered several violations regarding the late filing of quarterly reports highlighting the recall, as is a standard requirement in the US. The NHTSA determined Triumph failed to provide the organisation with copies of technical service bulletins and failed to file early warning data reports on death/injury claims, warranty and other information. US transportation secretary Anthony Foxx said: “Manufacturers must comply with their reporting obligations. The law requires
it, and public safety demands it. “When companies fail to meet those obligations, we will hold them accountable.” Triumph has acknowledged deficiencies in how it collects and reports early warning data to the NHTSA and has since been ordered to hire an independent consultant to audit its safety practices, establish a compliance officer position with direct access to the company’s board and senior executives, and submit written plans for employee training and compliance practices for approval by the NHTSA.

Teaching kids to ride Stephanie Somerville knows that motorcycles and kids sounds like a bad combination. “People question me: ‘Are you sure you want to do that?’” says the mother of two young children. That is enrolling sons Ryan, 10, and Connor, 8, in Honda’s off-road training course for kids at its headquarters in Markham, Ont. The Honda Junior Red Riders (JRR) program is a half-day training course targeted at children aged 6 to 12. “We just thought it would be something, different something fun to do. And I think it will give them some confidence, too.” There are 11 children here eagerly waiting to hop on the little CFR50, CFR80 and CFR125 bikes lined up on the grassy field. At the urging of the four instructors, they gather in a small trailer to put on helmets, boots, gloves and other protective clothing. Safety is the first thing taught here. “I wanted to get them to try it but I didn’t want to just throw them on a bike,” says Raj Sharma. “The program started in 2004,” says Kimberly Moore, Honda’s press and PR co-ordinator, who is also in charge of organizing JRR. “It started off very differently, it began as a full-day. But we pulled it back to a half day because it was a little too much for the kids physically. Now, when they come off at the end, they’re exhausted. The parents say they sleep all the way home.” Right now, this group is nothing but a ball of energy. They emerge proudly from the trailer in full gear, some stumbling like newborn fawns in the clunky boots. After some pats on the helmets by parents, the children are assembled on the lawn in a semicircle; the group stands silently and attentive while two of the teen- and twentysomething instructors go over the basic controls of a small motorcycle. The bikes are wheeled out in a line in front of the kids. This is the first step; they’re pushed across what amounts to about a half football field, one by one, to get acquainted with using the brake and balancing, and then back again. But the next step is for real: the engines are kicked on and the air fills with the gentle putt-putt-putt from the exhaust and, again, one by one, they travel the same line, this time on their own. Some show trepidation, some need some help slowing down, but all make it across in triumph. JRR recently hosted a group of autistic children with the volunteer-based group, Project Autism. “Some of our kids can have challenges in group settings,” says Anne Mason, head of the York region branch. “But there is no judgment, everyone is accepting. “We had six children there, and Honda had one-to-one support, and I was impressed with the instructors. Because they were accepting, the kids were able to have fun and be themselves.” The lessons get more complicated, such as riding in a wide circle and then doing slaloms. But the kids also become more competent and confident. “Just this four-hour course gives them so much overall confidence,” says Moore. “It’s bragging rights.” The engines are shut down and high fives all around. The kids filter out of the trailer still buzzing with excitement about the experience. “When they started pushing me, I was terrified,” says Golta Aghvami, 12. “But when we started riding in a circle, it was cool.”

Bill Toffan - A Dream Job sarah grandy
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
We all know him by is outgoing personality from the KX Morning Ride (KX94.7) with his on-air co-host Melissa. There is also another side to Bill Toffan a.k.a “Toff”, that we have yet to learn is the motorcycle enthusiast that comes out to play when he is not entertaining us on the radio, or travelling with popular country artists like Luke Bryan. What came across accidentally has lead Toffan into his dream career. Toffan began his radio journey back in 1976, while he was looking for a summer job. He started in his hometown of Fort Frances as an evening disc jockey (DJ). He enjoyed it so much; he then decided to go to college for the twoyear Radio and TV program in Thunder Bay, despite his father’s not-sopleased reaction to his career choice. “My father is an old-school, and wanted me to work in a pulp and paper mill, get married and have a billion children,” said Toffan. “He thought that was the best security for life.” I couldn’t have disagreed more and pursued a radio career. Toffan graduated from Confederation College in 1981 and landed a
job in Dryden, Ontario right away. He worked afternoons for a couple years until he was offered a position on a morning show back in Fort Frances. From there he did more travelling to Sault Ste. Marie (CKCY) Sudbury (Q92) Ottawa (106.9 The Bear) Regina (Rock 94) and (B93 The Border Fort Frances) back home again. Four years ago, he got the call for the morning show at Kx 94.7, which was a jazz station at the time. “But I wanted out of Saskatchewan so bad I figured…what the heck…I have a ‘“tweed blazer”’…I can do this. Three days after I arrived in Hamilton, I was advised by management we were switching format to new country.” “It’s truly been the best ride of my career,” said Toffan. “The experiences I’ve had here in four years has been off the charts spectacular and I’m loving the music and artists.” With all the travelling, events and charities Toffan attends, he needed to find a way to decompress and detach, which brings us to his love for motorcycles. It all started back when his uncle Bobby took him for “rip” through Chicago on his Harley. “I always loved snowmobiling throughout the winters growing up, but I think being on that Harley and
feeling so free was a turning point for me.” At age 18, Toffan was so passionate about riding that he traded in his 1976 Black, 5.6 liter Pontiac Trans Am with a big eagle decal on hood, for his first motorcycle – a brand new 1977 Honda V45 Sabre. “I loved riding so much that I traded in my Trans Am and drove around a beat up pick-up truck during the winters,” said Toffan. “My dad thought I lost my mind.” It was reminiscent of “Jack and the Bean stock.” His love for “Smokie & The Bandit” may have played a small role in this as well. “Move over Jack and Peter, there’s a new Easy Rider in town,” said Toffan. While riding is surely a passion, Toffan also uses it as a way to give back to the community. He’s been heavily involved in several fundraisers, including “Ride for Dad”, a national/local run charity to help raise funds/awareness for those with prostate cancer. “We’ve all been touched by the effects of cancer in one way, shape or form, and when I was asked to participate in the Ride for Dad, I said, ‘”I’d love to ride for a good cause!”’ “I try to do as much as I can, but there’s only so many weekends in
the summer,” said Toffan. “It’s a way of giving back to the community that has been so great to me.” When he’s not entertaining or doing charity work, Toffan enjoys taking long road trips on his 1700 Triumph Thunderbird. He escapes to his favorite place to ride, Niagara-on-the-lake and through Niagara Falls, where he can view the stunning escarpment and enjoy the winding, curvy roads. Toffan enjoys the company of members of both Hamilton and Toronto West RFD Chapters while riding; and many of his pals are police officers who ride too... “But I’m primarily a ‘“Lone Wolf”’ when it comes to riding, it’s how I detach and decompress.” “I’ve had a couple amazing excursions over the years. In 2006, I rode from Regina to Daytona Beach via Colorado and back. And just this summer I travelled over 3000k in six days through North Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio and Michigan,” he said. The motorcycle enthusiast rented a Harley Davidson while vacationing in Cancun, Mexico, and toured the entire area including the Myan Temple. “If I could ride for a living... I would! It’s the best feeling ever and an amazing way to really experience the real beauty of Canada and United States.”

So, you got a flat! Now what?! There has always been controversy surrounding the repair of a motorcycle tire. Some shops will say, never plug, only patch. Other shops will flat out (pun included) refuse to do either and recommend a new tire. It sometimes comes down to liability and warranty issues, depending on the business. There is nothing more heart wrenching and wallet draining then finding a nail, screw or piece of metal protruding from a new or fairly new, expensive tire on your baby. Sure, if the tire is near it’s life’s end and you have gotten your mileage from it, the wear bars are close to flush or side wall cracking is evident, it’s a no-brainier--just replace with new. But for a tire at the early stages of life and if its only a small puncture--I personally have both plugged and patched many a motorcycle tire on my own bikes and others with excellent results. Depending on the circumstances and where the puncture is and how big, will determine your options. A slice, puncture or cut in the sidewall of any tire whether it be motorcycle, car or off road vehicle is an automatic--throw the tire out scenario. But when it comes to tread or between the treads plugging/patching can be a cost efficient alternative to the latter. The only exception to this rule for me is sport bike front tires. I personally will not trust vulcanizing/plugging a sport bike front tire because of the often higher speeds and knee dragging maneuvers these tires are rode at. Many riders will attempt to repair their tires themselves in the garage at home, but if you have not done it before or are unsure--it is recommended that you get an expert tire technician opinion first. Riding on an improperly repaired tire is dangerous. An improper repair can cause further damage to the tire. It may suddenly fail, causing serious personal injury or death. Never repair a tire with less than 1/32nd inch (0.8 millimeters) tread remaining. At this tread depth, the tire is worn out and must be replaced. Never repair a tire with a puncture larger than 1/4 inch (6.4 millimeters) in diameter. Such tires cannot be properly repaired and must be replaced. Repairs of all tires (radial and non-radial) should be of the plug and inside patch type. Using plugs alone on any type of tire is risky. Never repair a tire with a puncture or
other damage outside the tread area. Such tires cannot be properly repaired and must be replaced. Any tire repair done without removing the tire from the rim is improper. Inner tubes, in my opinion, should just not be repaired. For the minimal cost --just replace it. Never use a tube as a substitute for a proper repair. Note--A tire’s speed rating is void if the tire is repaired, damaged or abused, or otherwise altered from its original condition. Thereafter, it should be treated as a nonspeed-rated tire if a repair has been done and your speed should not exceed 50 mph (80kph) in the first 24 hours after a repair and the repaired tire should never be used at speeds above 80 mph (128 kph). If you have got a small puncture and have decided to repair it yourself, here is the stepby-step procedure to follow doing this fix. Place your bike on a stand raising both wheels off the ground. Remove the wheel from the bike and locate the puncture area where the nail, screw or object is protruding. If the object has already come out or not visible--use a spray bottle filled with soapy water and spray the tire, rim and valve to locate tiny air bubbles. Circle the puncture with a grease pencil and then remove the valve stem from the tire completely deflating the tire before pulling the object with pliers. Remove the tire from the rim and locate the puncture area inside the tire. If you have a wire spoked wheel and inner tube, chances are the tube has also been punctured. Replace the inner tube. Using a tire repair kit for automotive type applications--rough up the inside area with the cheese grader tool and put the vulcanizing glue on this area. Let the glue set up sticky for a moment or two and at this point I prefer to use the mushroom type plug or the (Pilot) insideout combination patch plug which has a plug attached to the patch. Use the reamer tool and roughen up the puncture hole and then pull the plug through the puncture from the inside to out seating the attached patch into the glue. Vulcanizing makes the rubber patch and plug now a permanent part of the tire. Remount the tire, install the valve core and inflate to recommended psi and check for leaks with the soapy water. If it’s all good-- install the wheel and you are ready to go. Remember--if in doubt, consult a professional.

The Kawasaki Triples A Wrench in the Works

I guess the easiest way to do this is to start at the beginning. It was 1969, I was in high school and didn’t have 2 cents to rub together. What I did have was my brother’s Honda 305 Super Hawk. It ran well, could take me hundreds of miles away on the highway and could at least keep up to the Brit bikes. But, then came the big bikes. The Triumph and BSA triples arrived on the scene, fast yet ugly. Then, the Honda 750/4. I drooled in vain looking to the goose eggs in my bank account. In the spring of 1970, I rode my Honda from my home in North Bay to Toronto to visit a friend. He and his older brother were devoted 2 stroke fans. Both had Suzuki X-6’s and both were well acquainted with the look of my Honda’s tail light. Anyway, that spring there was a new surprise waiting in their driveway. The older brother had just purchased a 1970 Kawasaki Mach III 500. What a machine! Loud, smoky and lightning fast. Fast forward to the spring of 1971. I still had

was the king of the block racers. Again, who cares if they were shaky and could loosen fillings on the highway. They also had a big problem getting past gas stations. They were made to be flogged, and flogged hard. Gas mileage was usually about 30 miles/gallon. Super gas was 84 cents a gallon. Sometimes it took a whole $3.50 to fill it up. Sure, that doesn’t sound like much now but when you made $2.00 an hour, it really did seem like a lot. It was the equivalent of a 12 pack of beer. I like to put things in terms that we can all understand. Now, here we are in 2015. Sport bikes are now ridiculously fast. Twist the throttle and you are at death-defying speeds in no time. So, the heady acceleration of 0 to 60 mph, 100 kmh, doesn’t stir the imagination anymore. But , the legend lives on. The Kawasaki Triple is still loud, somewhat obnoxious and leaves a telltale smoke screen in its path. You still have to flog the heck out of them . That is what they thrive on. Yes, I admit it, I love them anyway. We can now put much better tires
witness firsthand. Let’s take a serious look at the first Kawasaki Triple, the Mach 111 500 H1. It had drum brakes all around and not very good ones. The front end featured spindly 34 mm forks and with the weight carried further back on the bike, and tended to lift upon acceleration, usually when the rider did not want it to lift. There were very few of these bikes that did not have the scraped engine cover and exhaust pipe feature. The rear shocks were very pretty and didn’t do much. The handling was skittish to say the least. But, they were the speed kings from stoplight to stoplight. Who cared if they didn’t handle and shook the fillings right out of your head, they were fast in a straight line. Many was the time that I would pull up to a light beside a muscle car of the time like a Camaro or Chevelle 396 and watch the driver suddenly become preoccupied changing his radio station or adjusting his rear view mirror. They had learned the hard way. You didn’t mess with the Kawasaki. It

brother’s Kawasaki. One morning he started it up , waited while it warmed up and then told me to take it for a ride. I was hooked! How could any bike be that fast? It was still loud. It shook like mad when accelerating, and stood up on its rear wheel without any real provocation. Naturally, I just had to have one. Well, that really isn’t the story here. I parted company with my Kawasaki too quickly but I have always remembered that bike. Years later, I have returned to the Kawasaki fold. Now, in a time of ridiculously fast 4 stroke motorcycles, why would anyone want a 45 year old performance 2 stroke that is loud , smoky, has to be kick started and beeps when you turn on the key? I remember what it was like 45 years ago riding that machine for the first time. Is it trying to recapture my youth? Yes, sure it is. Is it the smart thing to do? I can never be accused of doing the smart thing. Just ask my long-suffering wife. I am helping to keep a part of motorcycling history alive. The birth of the Super Bike. I was there and want

on them. More modern shocks and fork springs help the handling too. Bronze swing arm bushings also lend a hand. But, let’s not kid ourselves, smooth trackers these are not. But fun, oh yeah!!! I am a proud member of Kawasaki Triples Canada. This has turned out to be a world-wide group of Kawi Triples enthusiasts and a great bunch of people. We meet a couple times a year for group rides and general bull sessions when the Canadian winter gives us time to work on new ways to make our Triples faster and/or prettier. But, I am glad to say that these guys don’t believe in pretty trailer Queens. These are riders and Kawi floggers to the ninth degree. There is also a wealth of knowledge here for the asking. Any question about performance tuning, repair, or anything else draws a deluge of useful advice. And, if I have anything to do with it, also a deluge of good natured ribbing and jokes. I have even reached the point where I can also offer valuable information on occasion. Maybe not as much as others but I am getting there. Many times there are conflicting thoughts on what could be the root of a problem. Then when the report comes back as to what worked and what didn’t, there is once again a bit of chest puffing and good natured ribbing. But, the main thing is that the problem has been fixed and that particular member is that much closer to having his own piece of history on the road again. With each piece of advice usually comes a little extra information. My favourite extra is ‘Don’t ask why I know this.’ It is good to hear that we can all learn by our mistakes. Some, like me, by our many, many mistakes. Our group rides can only be described as stellar. The sound of 10 to 20 triples is deafening and yet, sweet music. The sound of a pack of triples in full song is unforgettable and will never cease to bring a large and stupid grin to my face. There is definitely a lack of mosquitoes in the general vicinity when the smoke screen finally clears. When we stop for a rest, or lunch or, more frequently for gas, there seems to be a magnetic attraction to these bikes. Guys or, mostly guys, are drawn to them. Many had a triple or had a friend or brother who had one. The most common statement is, ‘Those were fast’ The electrifying news is that they are still fast... for their time. Everyone looking seems to have a story about past wheelies and wipe outs and the like. Even more say that they would love to have one again. Once the ride is over, the real fun begins. It’s called bench racing. It is best summed up by one of our members, ’the older I get, the faster I was.’ I sometimes find it necessary to roll up my pants legs because the bull seems to get very deep on the floor. I am also very happy to say that many of these people who share a common interest have become real friends. As I stated in a previous story, it is nice to be able to talk about pistons, porting, and carburetors and have the person on the receiving end not look at you with a dumbfounded look on their face. Stepping through the cow pasture you can hear tidbits of conversation touching on reed valve addition, expansion chambers, porting and polishing and every other technique to wring more horsepower out of your Triple. But, that could be the topic for another time.

Some bikers have had to rethink old rules and adapt them to the current situation. “I’ve always loved motorcycles,” says Taleb Farag, founder of a group of bikers called Exclusive Riders Network. “But I was also very fearful of jumping on one so I’ve always said ‘four wheels were better than two.’” But after a personal loss in his family he re-evaluated what he wanted out of life, took a leap of faith, got his M1 and the rest is history. Taleb, in his early 30s, rides a matt black with matt gold coloured 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R. It’s his third bike, and he’s been riding for about seven years. By day he works for Mercedes-Benz as service adviser and he’s also an entrepreneur with his own website. Taleb doesn’t call his group a ‘motorcycle club’, although in reality it is one, for reasons I’ll get to shortly. He started off looking for people to ride with by posting on an online forum. He realized there weren’t many places close to him in Mississauga to meet up - particularly not with the M1 restriction of not being able to ride at night. “I didn’t want to miss the opportunity of meeting other people but I didn’t want to break the law,” he says. So Taleb called for a meet near Square One - which is a giant mall in the middle of Mississauga. More and more bikers came to the impromptu meetings and eventually Taleb came up with the idea of a longer ride to Niagara Falls. THEY SHOWED UP The ride proved to be huge. To put it in perspective Taleb photocopied 20 maps of the route to hand out, hoping for the best. In the end Taleb counted 77 bikes who arrived for the ride and some bikes had passengers. The unexpected volume was a challenge but Taleb again stepped up. He divided the ride into a number of groups so those who wanted to take a more scenic route could do that while others who wanted a fast, quick ride could do that, too. “It was such a successful ride that day I was blown away,” Taleb says. “I was surprised that it ended up being as successful as it was for the unexpected notice.” People began texting him for when the next ride would be. It became more and more to manage so Taleb checked out a few social media tools before settling on one that worked for his group. “Back then it was just me - a guy named Taleb,” he says. There are no real planned rides just a social network where people can communicate with each other. Members are professional and family-oriented and Taleb says he’s worked hard to keep it that way. “It’s not the quantity, it’s the quality,” Taleb emphasizes. He made it known the fellowship wasn’t a group for just anyone who ‘rides’ - he wanted it more for a specific type of person who is family-oriented, law-abiding, a sen-
sible rider, goal-oriented and well-balanced overall. SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE Taleb has confronted an issue most, if not all, motorcycle clubs have - perception. In a word - how to have a group, how to display symbols of your group, without getting labeled as a law-breaking gang of criminals. That’s why he doesn’t call his group a ‘motorcycle club’ or encourage members in his group to wear leather vests with patches. He doesn’t want other professional members having to explain other members’ actions if someone does something illegal plus, with the increasing number of sponsors E.R.N. has, he doesn’t want a single unfortunate episode to endanger those relationships. They tried out a few names before settling on ‘Exclusive Riders Network.’ The group doesn’t have a clear officer structure either but Taleb does have several people in his community who are his ‘right hand’ who he can count on to get things done. He’s had to cull the membership back over the years, too - at one point there were over 200 people associated - and now they have about 60 solid members. “A lot of people who approach me to be a part of something like this - they have their reasons why they want to - whether it be things at home are not going 100 per cent well, or they are lonely. That’s where I find it becomes difficult,” he says. Some just lost interest in riding, some just don’t fit in anymore. Taleb is constantly contacted by past members trying to reconnect due to feeling the loss of being disconnected from the E.R.N community and what it stands for. The group doesn’t have particular rules as to what kind of bike you have to ride but the vast majority are sport bikes. Ages range from university age to 60. “That’s one of the things I really enjoy about it,” says Taleb, “Not only age groups but professions.” The network brings people together. He’s also expanding to include people who may have related ‘riding’ interests who maybe don’t ride anymore or have moved towards say boating or flying or exotic vehicles. They may start having events related to these interests. FUTURE OF E.R.N. AND BIKING E.R.N. is considering selling apparel with the name or logo on it. Most people realize that anyone wearing a ball cap or piece of clothing with the name isn’t necessarily connected with a gang yet it’s a way for E.R.N. to identify themselves. Taleb also says they are missing out on the opportunity to win awards and contests at events because they don’t have an identifiable group. E.R.N. doesn’t have a specific charity of choice but Taleb runs a crowdfunding website cookieejar.com and E.R.N. has helped out other charities through that. Different people contact E.R.N. in different ways - online forums, the website exclusiveridersnetwork.com or in person - your best bet is probably the website.

Szokes goes Seven for Seven
Jordan Szoke returned with a vengeance to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park this past weekend. The challenging 10-turn 3.957 km (2.459-mile) road course located just outside of Bowmanville Ontario, Canada hosted the Mopar CSBK Canadian Superbike Championship double header finale Last year at this time, Szoke sat with a season ending injury to his right thumb, and watched his 2014 championship slip away. This season he vowed to return with a vengeance. The first of two races was held Saturday afternoon where Szoke took the lead in the final few corners for the victory. This gave him an insurmountable 99-point lead over the remainder of the field and his 10th historic Canadian Superbike Championship.“I love coming here,” said Szoke. “Sometimes you get into cham-
pionship management mode but you end up battling with someone during the race. Why not battle for the lead with someone you know?”Szoke also claimed victory in the final race of the Mopar CSBK Superbike season on Sunday afternoon completing a perfect season, winning all seven out of seven races. He is the only rider in Canadian Superbike’s 35 year history to command such a feat. Not only once, but twice having scored 7 out of 7 in 2010.“It’s one thing to win a race; it’s another thing to win a perfect season,” said Szoke after his 52nd Superbike career win. “What an amazing feat for the whole team! Most of the races this year have been wicked just like this one. I’m looking forward to repeating this next year.”Szoke’s

My wife Amy Szoke manages the PR and Marketing, Sandy Szoke is head of timing and scoring, Bob Szoke, Brian Couture and Nick Dunlop all provide us with media, and Uwe Karthaus is our go-getstuff guy. Without everyone’s hard work, along with the support of all our sponsors, we wouldn’t have achieved this award. This trophy is for everyone.” says Szoke while standing atop the podium at CTMP for the third time on one weekend.
a mathematical chance of retaining the Canadian Superbike Championship for the year, but the focus was on the Hindle Pro Sport Bike class, where Jodi was just 10 points behind leader Kenny Riedmann. Taking qualifying and bonus points into account, 108 points were up for grabs over the weekend doubleheader. During the first official day of practice and qualifying, thunderstorms resulted in just a few dry laps of practice, and qualifying was postponed to Saturday. Jodi eventually qualified second on the Honda CBR600RR in Pro Sport Bike, and with very little Superbike practice still managed fifth on the grid with his CBR1000RR SP for the Superbike class. In Saturday’s drama-filled Sport Bike final, Jodi was part of a three-rider lead group right from the first lap. The three ran nose-to-tail for the entire race, and on the final lap it was Riedmann with the win and Jodi in second place. The result left Jodi further behind in the point standings, but still with a chance of winning the championship on Sunday.
After what felt like a long, uphill season much like the “Mario Andretti” back straightaway at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Trevor headed into the final two rounds of the Mopar CSBK Championship at CTMP feeling positive that a great weekend was to come. With no chance of meaningful practice Friday and qualifying not possible due to the rain conditions, Saturday morning’s session had great importance as it became the qualifying session to set the grid for both days of racing. Fifth place in the opening session was due to a great set-up by tuner Dave Weaver and had Trevor excited heading into superpole“ I felt good with our setup as I entered the track, and was able to get great positioning behind Jordan and Matt McBride for a few hot laps. In the afternoon race, Trevor had a great start, moving to 6th and by mid race was able to catch the lead group. A great battle between 5 riders took place with Trevor and 2014 National Champion, Jodi Christie going back and forth multiple times for the final podium step. As the checkered flew, Trevor road across the line just 0.7seconds behind race winner Jordan Szoke and 0.068seconds behind Jodi for 3rd place. Sunday’s race had all the same contenders upfront and started in similar fashion with Trevor slotting into 6th on the first lap. Unfortunately the lead group was several seconds ahead by the time Trevor moved into 5th spot mid race. “I put my head down and road as hard as I could to catch the lead group. I was able to catch them but had used up my rear tire and a lot of myself in doing that. Unfortunately I made a mistake, losing the front in “Moss’s corner” only a few laps later. Trevor re-entered the race, climbing back to 8th. With 2 laps to go, a mechanical failure ended Trevor’s day and the 2015 season. Ending the weekend and the race season with only Trevor’s 2nd DNF in 4 years of racing was unfortunate but was just a dark spot on what was mostly a positive weekend. The Superbike feature on Saturday was just as exciting, with as many as five riders in a drafting pack for the lead almost the entire 20-lap race. Jodi ran as high as second several times, and at the checkered flag finished in third; Jordan Szoke won the race, clinching the 2015 Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship. The team worked diligently on Saturday night to find every last bit of speed for Sunday’s championship finales, making improvements to both bikes. On Sunday morning, Jodi was quickest in the Sport Bike practice and secondquickest in Superbike practice. In the Sport Bike final, it was again a group of riders contesting the lead, with as many as six riders in the lead pack for much of the race. Jodi looked in good shape to challenge for the lead in the closing laps, but unfortunately an electrical problem slowed his CBR600RR on the last lap and he dropped to seventh at the flag. Kenny Riedmann won the race, and locked up the 2015 Hindle Pro Sport Bike Championship, with Jodi finishing in second for the year.
Returning to race action for the first time since injuring his hand on Father’s Day, veteran Steve Beattie put in a dominant performance aboard the KBR Honda single to take the Feature race win in the Open Expert class at the London Fairgrounds Flat Track Canada event, round nine of the Championship, Saturday, August 22. Moving quickly through the pack, Beattie passed the Harley-Davidson XR750 of race and Championship leader Doug Lawrence about a quarter of the way into the final, the gradually pulled clear for the victory. Meanwhile, Don Taylor, on the Parts Canada backed XR750, put on a spectacular charge following his bad start, working the cushion, to take second at the chequered. Lawrence, fresh from an impressive road racing inaugural outing the previous weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in the debut of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 series, settled for third and extended his lead in the overall series points standings with two rounds left to run.“I decided at the last minute to race tonight,” explained Beattie at the Podium post-race. “We actually discussed it Friday night. This is the same bike I won with here last year, and I haven’t ridden at all since Father’s Day. Obviously, I haven’t forgotten too much!”Looking a little gray and dealing with food poisoning, Taylor wasn’t sure he would be able to compete at the popular 5/8 mile London venue. “I didn’t get a good start, I couldn’t shift because I was up against another bike, and once we got straight I was eating roost like crazy,” began Taylor. “My bike wasn’t really set-up to ride up high on the cushion, but we made it work. It could have gone a lot worse, but it’s another year I didn’t get the win at London. ”Lawrence wasn’t thrilled with third, but overall, the Championship leader was glad to wind up with the final podium spot: “I really got a decent start, I was confident, happy to ride the bottom and let everything work out. Then I lost my brakes, and I had to switch to survival mode.”“I beat the guy I needed to beat (near-season long Expert Open points leader Tyler Seguin) so that was the most important goal,” continued “Fresh”. “Steve (Beattie) was really riding great, but I thought his line would go away, and I was wrong about that.” A number of top Canadian road racers were on hand to compete at London, with their National season completed the weekend before with the Double Header at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.Newly crowned Mopar CSBK overall Champ Jordan Szoke considered making his career Flat Track debut at London, tested at the Paris Short Track on Tuesday night, but a busy schedule made the National a no-go.

PRODUCT REVIEW Ever drop your bike in the garage? Me too, my bike was not entirely inside the garage, it was backed half way out. I was reaching for the plastic side stand disc that was tucked in the pocket of my riding jacket, inconveniently tossed on a lawn chair only a few feet away. The bike quickly listed to port side and came to rest on my garden tractor, I was thinking that this was a really bad way to begin a motorcycle ride. After gasping, cursing, righting the bike, and a brief celebration (no obvious damage to bike or tractor) it occurred to me that if I was able to simply put my motorcycle in gear then power forward out of the garage all this could have been avoided. Any rider who’s struggled with their motorcycle inside a confined space or had a similar mishap to mine has likely thought about a logical solution. As it turns out, Mr. Rob Baetz of Brantford Ontario has put more thought into this scenario than the rest of us. Rob has developed the Turncycle, a small and sturdy turntable affair that allows a motorcycle to be rotated a full 360 degree pirouette. I have been testing the Turncycle for several weeks and was used daily to turn my 429 lb motorcycle around, and yes, it works well. With simple instructions and correct centre stand technique, the bike was propped up on the turn table and conveniently spun around. I didn’t just test one bike, I enlisting two friends who propped their own bikes up on the Turncycle and they were both impressed. Bill and his 2011 V Strom – An-
dre and his 2015 BMW GSA R 1200. I had my doubts about that big Beemer because it looks a little larger than my wife’s station wagon but the thing glided around gracefully as I gently elevated the big knobby front tire by pushing down on the rear rack luggage rack. Impressive when you consider that Andre’s BMW is approximately twice the weight of my own bike. Bill, Andre and another BMW rider – observer, agreed that the Turncycle was a simple clever design and easy to use. The Canadian made Turncycle worked well and was reasonably priced. Our rag - tag peer review group also agreed that $184.99 was a bargain when considering the cost of other products, space requirements, storage, and motorcycle repairs. The Turncycle follows a simple design theme; it looks durable and provides a nice alternative to the traditional 10 point garage turn. A critical approach to bringing anything new into my cramped garage is routed in practicality; I have to be selective if the small space is to remain usable. No need to fuss, the turntable disc will be welcomed into the garages of both minimalist and hoarders as it’s not only functional but compact and easily stored. The sturdy disc weighs 8 lbs. it’s ¼ inch thick and a small drilled hole near the outside of the disc so it can be conveniently hung on sturdy peg. If you find you don’t have the turning radius in the garage, use it in the drive way and then back your motorcycle into the garage and park it. Now your bike is ready for the next ride. Disc storage when it’s not in use is recommended as leaving the disc on the floor could be risky. In my case, I’d forget about it, step on the thing, spin,
and launch myself into the air, probably while I’m carrying something heavy. There are also two small rubber mats included in the turntable kit, these ¼ thick mats are used to slightly elevate your motorcycle and compensated for the disc height, this slight boost in bike elevation allows your centre stand to function correctly. The mats are placed in front of the two tires and you push your bike up onto the thin, spongy material prior to placing the turncycle disc into position. Sounds awkward but the operation is executed easily. Do not move your bike forward and backward over top the disc, it should be placed under the stationary bike prior to each use. It should be mentioned that the small yellow painted ‘targets’ on the disc are helpful, they allow you to align the unit correctly under your motorcycle, they also help you plant the centre stand legs correctly, especially in low light. Nothing is ever perfect, so I’ll share my only concern, and it’s a small one, more of a heads up actually; When you use the Turncycle for the first time you may feel a slight shimmy as the bike stand reaches the ‘over centre’ position. Nothing serious, but I momentarily thought the bike was going to be in my lap until its full weight was transferred onto the disc. You will immediately learn to trust the disc following your fist lift and the shimmy thing becomes a non-issue. That’s it. A Canadian made, quality product. It does exactly as it says, no surprises. Visit www.turncycle.ca for more information. Oh and for you side stand guys and gals, he is now working on a prototype for testing. So keep checking the website for updates on the newest product coming soon.
My wife and I ride every day that we can and we have had some pretty interesting experiences. Last summer, we decided to go for a ride with no destination in mind— which is not unusual for us. What is usual though is that we always have to stop at the local coffee shop so my wife can get a drink for the road. As we were pulling up to the shop, we noticed there was an old gentleman looking distressed. We got off the bike, and walked up to him and asked if something was wrong. Here we are, all decked out in leathers, long hair and tattoos, a little scruffy and unsaven (well me anyway) and the old guy acts like we are his best friends. Well, it turned out that he had locked his keys in his car and had been trying for awhile to get them out. We walked around the car looking to see if there was a window a little bit down so we could get a coathanger down it, but it was a no go. He had locked it up tight. He had already called his daughter, but it would be some time before she could get to him. He looked at us, put his eyes to the ground, looked at us again and then very quietly, asked if we could go to his house and get his spare keys. “Well sure,” I said. “Is there anyone home?” “No,” he said. So I was thinking, “Damn, I don’t think this old guy will want to get on the back of my motorcycle, which I could have done with no problem.” He looked at us, held out his house keys, and said, “Could you ride to my house, go in, and get the keys that are hanging on the key hook in the kitchen beside the back door?” We said we would be glad to go and get his keys, his eyes got all watery, and he couldn’t thank us enough. Well, we went to his house, got his car keys, and as we handed them to him, he just couldn’t take the smile off his face. After a moment I said “You know, you shouldn’t ever give the keys to your castle with everything you own in it to strangers. You never know what could happen.” To that he replied, “You might be bikers with all your leathers and that hard knox exterior but it’s your eyes. I knew by looking at you that you were good people.” With a smile in his eyes he said, “You see, with all my years here on earth, I like to think that I’m a good judge of character, and I was right.” Well we carried on with our ride that day, with the wind in our hair, the freedom of the road and the love we share, we both also had a smile that wouldn’t fade. It was a good day!
