architecural DESIGN 6 Redesigning the Church of Marawi

University Carpark

Integrated Transport Terminal

Our first major plate in our Second Semester of Third Year was the Redesigning of the Church of Marawi City. The brief was a catholic church that respects an Islam dominated city

The brief was design a temporary carpark infront of Beato Angelico inside University of Santo Tomas. The site is 72x30 M and located in the gazebo area. It should have three levels and a roof deck.

The brief requires a design for an Integrated Transport Terminal in a site of the old FTI Terminal neart Arca South. It should have 40 bus bays, a puv and jeep terminal, and a footbridge connecting the PNR and the subway, and idle and motorpools.

EDITOR’S NOTE This course was a challenge to me ever since first year, but it’s great that little by little I’ve been improving through my design concept, consideration, strategies, my sdp, and mostly my design form. I still have more room for improvement but I’m gladly willing to do more. JANNA BALASBAS

CHURCH OF MARAWI “For we are dust from Earth, and to dust we shall return” Genesis 3:19 Marawi was a land full of life, peace, and prosperity. Their crafts and art were loved and celebrated. Both religion, although different in ideals, harmonize with one another. The Church of Marawi is a symbol that Marawi can rise again. Just like a seed buried in the ground, it grows up, become larger, and soon forms large branches.

Marawi inspired Breeze Blocks was instilled at the facade to pay respect to dominant religion of the city. It also adds aesthetic value to the church as well as air circulation

HEAVEN AND EARTH The ceiling was formed to look like the Heavens. The Mezzanine were for the choir to sing, representing the Angels. The ground floor are for the preachers and for the humans, representing earth. The Church has an Earth Tone palette and encompasses sustainable materials such as wood, bamboo, stone, and the thatched roof.

Bespoke Furniture for the Pews, Pulpit, and the Altar table

for the marawi people The customized Narthex is made up of traditional patterns from the people of Marawi. These are called ‘OKIR‘ which have been slowly dying due to the disinterest of the youth and poor effort in preserving tradition

Weaving is such a beautiful piece of the Maranao culture. Their art. Their story. This is embedded in the wave forms of the Altar and the Ceiling. No matter the odds, or the troubles that has come across the city, one’s tradition can never be erased.

UNIVERSITY CARPARK This building type is a complex challenge as automotive, engineering, and traffic issues relative to site locations must integrate to produce the right solution. This makes designing the parking facility requires an integrated design approach of many professionals. Parking is often limited to constructing the most minimal stand-alone structure or parking lot without human, aesthetic, or integrative considerations; This reason has given parking a poor public perception and has frequently disrupted the existing urban fabric.

The site was where the gazebo area once where. So I decided to have all the gazebos on the roof deck.

ground floor on site There are about 60 parking slots in the ground floor with 2 PWD slots and an additional 5 motorcycle parking slots.

Facade Details

The elevator and stairs to the roof deck is located outside the building to avoid foot traffic. The ramp is circular with a radius of 4.5 meters and a with of 8 meters fitted for a two way.

multi-story carparks: a great way to promote people centric ideas What if car parking aren’t situated in the road anymore? This gives more space for people to maximize the use of roads. No longer will we see cars parked at the side of the sidewalks that makes the road narrower. No longer will we be scared of getting hit or we hear those noise cars make when our volleyballs hit the hood. My carpark is designed to be white all around. Clean, Pristine, and Open. WIth facade detaiils that symbolizes movement. The elevator and stairs were situated in the front which indicates that this carpark is indeed people centric. The elev and stairs go straight to the roof deck where interactive areas and green spaces are located.

Tensile roofs are easily assembled and disassembled. Since this is a temporary structure, I made sure every material is easy to manage.

TITX: INTEGRATED TRANSPORT TERMINAL The South Integrated Transport Terminal will cater the Southern Luzon and Mindanao-bound provincial buses, connecting inter-city buses, PUVs, FXs, Taxi, and jeepneys and will provide link to the proposed ARCA South Subway Station and the PNR-FTI Station. It must accommodate at least forty (40) provincial bus departure bays and twenty (20) provincial bus arrival bays. For the number of terminal bays for PUVs, FXs, Taxi, and Jeepneys, it must be determined thru the research that you will be conducting together with the appropriate number of parking slots intended for private cars.

MAIN TERMINAL GROUND FLOOR Situated in front of the building are the parking slots for service parking, administrative and staff parking, private vehicle parking, and a paid private vehicle parking. My inspiration for the circulation here will be the typical airport design. Greeter’s Hall will be the first hall you see upon entering and three ticketing booths will be seen right away. There are only two levels of the building with the second floor full of offices for the administration and security.

The Bus Maintenance building is separated from the Main. This consists of the Driver’s Area and Sleeping Quarters, the MRF, and Maintenance Workshop. Infront of the Bus Maintenance is the Idle and Motorpool parking for the Bus and a Fuel Truck Service Parking with a gas station located.

The entrance of the Departure and Arrival Area is on the second floor and is connected by a footbridge.

GREEN SPACES One of the reasons why I was very particular of my Site Development Plan is to maximize the use of Green Spaces in the lot. The site is about 5.6 hecatres so there should always be a room for Expansion. This would be perfect for placing trees and garden and even a large parasol, inspired by the parks in SIngapore

The color scheme of Red and Orange are both bright and comforting to the human eye. Orange would indicate the bridges formed and Red would indicate the Building Points. Since the bridge to from the bus terminal to PUV/Jeep Terminal is long, I decided to make it look fun and entertaining, hence the wavy shape

SITE DEVELOPED One thing did I really wanted to improve to myself is my Site Development Plan. I wanted to be efficient in circulation and also with the parks and recration for the people. I wanted this building to be people centric of course

Large Parasols inspired by the concept of the Ocean.

reflection

I have always struggled with Architectural Design, I loved my design concepts but it never was justified because I wasn’t great in designing building. But last summer, during the lockdown, I was stuck in my condo unit in Lacson because my flight back to my province in Agusan del norte was a struggle. I decided to be productive, I had earned a new laptop from my dad last Februart 2019, thank God I had it before the lockdown. My summer was fruitful and kind of renewed my passion for design. But it went downhill when I came home and so many external factors made me demotivated (rotational brownouts and very very very slow wi-fi). I guess the moment I saw my grades in the first semester of third year, opened my eyes that I should really improve now, or never. Design process is always important and it should never be missed out. I have recently learned that having a great Design Schematics will help you a long way. Looking at how my plates have progressed over the semester gave me this happiness and satisfaction that I was better than before. An advice to the incoming batch is to “Never compare yourself with anyone, only to your past self.” I want to thank my professor for giving such amazing advice and feedback in our design process. It has been fruitful and I’ll take this with me as I get older. This was such an honor. Thank you.
