architecural interiors 1 Redesigning the Church of Marawi

Condominium Unit for Renovation

Fine Dining Restaurant

Our first major plate in our Second Semester of Third Year was the Redesigning of the Church of Marawi City. The brief was a catholic church that respects an Islam dominated city

The brief was to create a comfortable Work from home setup as well as a Home school setup for their family. We we were tasked to come up with our own client profile and put our creativty to the test

The brief requires a design for a proposed themed restaurant found in BGC. The restaurant is a two retailed space and a new venture by a noted Chef and would include in his business plan the concept of an open kitchen.

EDITOR’S NOTE Architectural Interiors has been my favorite subject really. Long before I thought about being an Architect, I’ve always wanted to be an Interior Designer. To work on colors, fabrics, concept making, chairs, furnitures was a dream. To have my passion as an Interior Designer, or the feels of it took me aback. Maybe someday I’ll pursue this or I could take Masterals, who knows. I hope my works would make it clear how this course meant to me. JANNA BALASBAS

CHURCH OF MARAWI “For we are dust from Earth, and to dust we shall return” Genesis 3:19 Marawi was a land full of life, peace, and prosperity. Their crafts and art were loved and celebrated. Both religion, although different in ideals, harmonize with one another. The Church of Marawi is a symbol that Marawi can rise again. Just like a seed buried in the ground, it grows up, become larger, and soon forms large branches.

Marawi inspired Breeze Blocks was instilled at the facade to pay respect to dominant religion of the city. It also adds aesthetic value to the church as well as air circulation

HEAVEN AND EARTH The ceiling was formed to look like the Heavens. The Mezzanine were for the choir to sing, representing the Angels. The ground floor are for the preachers and for the humans, representing earth. The Church has an Earth Tone palette and encompasses sustainable materials such as wood, bamboo, stone, and the thatched roof.

for the marawi people The customized Narthex is made up of traditional patterns from the people of Marawi. These are called ‘OKIR‘ which have been slowly dying due to the disinterest of the youth and poor effort in preserving tradition

Weaving is such a beautiful piece of the Maranao culture. Their art. Their story. This is embedded in the wave forms of the Altar and the Ceiling. No matter the odds, or the troubles that has come across the city, one’s tradition can never be erased.

condominium unit for renovation Our client profile is Gov. Chiz Escudero and Miss Heart Evangelista who have 2 daughters and a pet terrier. Gov. Chiz’s hobby is reading meanwhile, Miss Heart’s hobby is painting. For our concept of the unit, we focused on the theme of the Mid Century and combined Sining & Kape. Sining for Miss Heart’s showcase of creativity and Kape for Gov. Chiz’s office for working. Our work was divided by three: Bedroom, Living Room, and the Work at Home Setup. I volunteered to do the Work at Home Setup

The Work at Home Setup has been a necessity to the household ever since the pandemic happened

a family oriented governor man Gov. Chiz Escudero is a family oriented man, a fairly common trait of the Filipinos. So in his office, I delicately provided a nook for his children to bond with him silently and a reading corner for the wife and an aesthetic backdrop mirror for selfies. Book racks are provided above their seats. If the husband chooses to be alone, the doors to his office table are movable and can become a noise barrier. Glass is semi opaque, enough for a bit of sunlight to come through

a place of soltitude in the pandemic This lockdown has been going on for months now, recently turned to a year last March. So much has happened and so many things have yet to continue despite the troubles this times have caused. We are all forced to stay indoors, and so does our life outside. A place of soltitude, a place where we bury our work, a place where we can cave in is what we need

Miss Heart”s actual paintings as showcase in Gov. Chiz’s office

Lights played an important role in the Work at Home setup. A person tends to be more productive when lights are a bit dim and warm. Since the office table is infront of the window, you can catch the sun rise after an all nighter perhaps.

fine dining restaurant We have chosen the theme to be Danish X Industrial approach where in Danish food is more of raw and fresh and we thought that Industrial is the best way to translate its culture being that raw materials like exposed pipes, concrete, geometrical finishes are its main elements. We thought beyond what was expected in the output : Exterior facade, Dining Experience, and Open Kitchen. We planned the best circulation of the restaurant, complete with staff necessities, take-out counter, as well as VIP room and kitchen facilities. We also provided our own Menu, branding, logo, mock-ups, and staff uniform. This was our last plate in Interiors and we wanted to end it with a plate that was well thought of and passionately expressed.

open kitchen Open kitchens provide a permanent and live attraction at any restaurant. They give diners a sense of anticipation by showcasing a hypnotizing preview of the food that’s about to be served.

Logo Design The Hygge Kitchen

Not to mention, a well-designed kitchen with copper pans and high-tech equipment set against exposed wooden bricks always leaves a good impression.

A well-designed Reception gives a great first impression for the customers. The restaurant may not accept the maximum customers it can accomodate in this period, but they accept limited walk-ins. Luckily, with a leather sofa, customers can comfortably wait in line

reflection

I had a senior who told me once that when I take up Architectural Interiors, I would love it. In fact, I really did love it from the beginning til the end and I’m actually glad that it loves me too, I’d show you my grades for it. Growing up, I’ve watched so many different variety shows about Interior Designers and I’ve always love how they create a storyline for every challenge they were put up through. Everything had to be complementary and very cohesive to the brief. Yes, the brief is the most important task that every designer must uphold. Everything should follow the brief, nothing more nothing less. I have had clients ever since I started doing commissions on digital art and I learned all my experience from what the client wants, how open you should be in conversing with the client, and also at the same time, spice it up with your own style. Put a little something in you in that project, you are giving your time and effort in it so it’d be a pity if it’s all about the minimum. Know your client, know their background check, do research on your project and do your schematics seriously. Design process is always important and it should never be missed out. Looking at how my plates have progressed over the semester gave me this happiness and satisfaction that I was better than before. Never compare yourself with anyone, only to your past self. I want to thank my professor for giving such amazing advice and feedback in our design process. It has been fruitful and I’ll take this with me as I get older. I also want to thank the people I’ve worked with in my plates. This was such an honor. Thank you.
